Beyond the two-dimensional (2D) saddle-point Van Hove singularities (VHSs) with logarithmic divergences in the density of states (DOS), recent studies have identified higher-order VHSs with faster-than-logarithmic divergences that can amplify electron correlation effects. Here we show that the cuprate high-Tc superconductors harbor high-order VHSs in their electronic spectra and unveil a new correlation that the cuprates with high-order VHSs display higher Tc. Our analysis indicates that the normal and higher-order VHSs can provide a straightforward new marker for identifying propensity of a material toward the occurrence of correlated phases such as excitonic insulators and supermetals. 13 pages, 13 figures (published version), We discuss a quantum thermal machine that generates power from a thermally driven double quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting reservoirs. Energy exchange between the dots is mediated by electron-electron interactions. We can distinguish three main mechanisms within the device operation modes. In the Andreev tunneling regime, energy flows in the presence of coherent superposition of zero- and two-particle states. Despite the intrinsic electron-hole symmetry of Andreev processes, we find that the heat engine efficiency increases with increasing coupling to the superconducting reservoir. The second mechanism occurs in the regime of quasiparticle transport. Here we obtain large efficiencies due to the presence of the superconducting gap and the strong energy dependence of the electronic density of states around the gap edges. Finally, in the third regime there exists a competition between Andreev processes and quasiparticle tunneling. We search for the deep origin of the field-induced superconductor-to-insulator transitions observed experimentally in electron-doped SrTiO$_{3}$/LaAlO$_{3}$ interfaces, which were analyzed theoretically very recently within the framework of superconducting fluctuations approach (Phys. Rev. B $\bf{104}$, 054503 (2021)). Employing the 2D electron-gas model with strong spin-orbit scatterings, we have found that in the zero temperature limit, field-induced unbounded growth of the fluctuation mass, and consequent divergence of Cooper-pair density in mesoscopic puddles, drives the system to Boson insulating states at high fields. Application of this model to the gate-voltage tuned 2D electron system, created in the SrTiO$_{3}$/LaAlO$_{3}$ (111) interface at low temperatures, shows that, at sufficiently high fields, the DOS conductivity prevails over the paraconductivity, resulting in strongly enhanced magnetoresistance in systems with sufficiently small carriers density. Dynamical quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs breaking into mobile normal-electrons states, which prevent the divergence at zero temperature, contain the high-field resistance onset.

In our previous work, high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) was probed for the first time by using electrical differential conductance Gdiff(V) = dI/dV data as obtained from current-voltage V(I) measurements on a hydrogenated graphitic fiber [1]. While our nonlocal method for finding the superconducting (SC) gap was recently applied to a conventional SC (Pb [2]), the nonlocal Gdiff method was first proposed in [1]. A theoretical-computational framework is proposed for predicting the failure behavior of two anisotropic brittle materials, namely, single crystal magnesium and boron carbide. Constitutive equations are derived, in both small and large deformations, by using thermodynamics in order to establish a fully coupled and transient twin and crack system. To study the common deformation mechanisms (e.g., twinning and fracture), which can be caused by extreme mechanical loading, a monolithically-solved Ginzburg–Landau-based phase-field theory coupled with the mechanical equilibrium equation is implemented in a finite element simulation framework for the following problems: (i) twin evolution in two-dimensional single crystal magnesium and boron carbide under simple shear deformation; (ii) crack-induced twinning for magnesium under pure mode I and mode II loading; and (iii) study of fracture in homogeneous single crystal boron carbide under biaxial compressive loading. The results are verified by a steady-state phase-field approach and validated by available experimental data in the literature. The success of this computational method relies on using two distinct phase-field (order) parameters related to fracture and twinning. A finite element method-based code is developed within the Python-based open-source platform FEniCS. We make the code publicly available and the developed algorithm may be extended for the study of phase transformations under dynamic loading or thermally-activated mechanisms, where the competition between various deformation mechanisms is accounted for within the current comprehensive modeling approach.

We utilize the van de Pauw technique combined with Density Functional Theory to show that an external voltage applied to superconducting AlB2-type compounds, such as MgB2 and Mg(B1.9C0.1), effects substantive changes in transition temperature due to modification of electronic band structure. An applied voltage results in a symmetric split of degenerate sigma bands in MgB2 similar to that calculated for atom displacement along the B-B bond aligned with E2g phonon mode directions. For AlB2, similar splitting of sigma bands occurs albeit with higher voltage requirement compared to MgB2. Experimental data show that Tc values for MgB2 and Mg(B1.9C0.1) reduce consistently with increased increments of applied voltage. We report on the evolution with magnetic field and temperature of the vortex lattice (VL) in fully-oxygenated YBa2Cu3O7 as studied by time-of-flight small angle neutron scattering. Using the HFM/EXED beamline, we have obtained data up to 25.9 T - much higher than that available previously. Our VL structure results indicate the progressive suppression by field of the superconductivity along the crystallographic b (CuO chain) direction. The intensity of the diffracted signal reveals the spatial variation of magnetization caused by the VL (the "form factor"). Instead of a rapid fall-off with field, as seen in superconductors with smaller upper critical fields, we find that the form factor is almost constant with field above about 12 T. We speculate that this is due to Pauli paramagnetic moments, which increase at high fields due to alignment of the spins of quasiparticles in the vortex cores., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We show that in the linear response approximation only entropy provides coupling between thermal and electric phenomena. The dissipationless quantum currents -- magnetization, superconducting, persistent and topological edge currents -- do not produce and transfer entropy and may be excluded from final formulas for thermomagnetic coefficients. The magnetization energy flux, eM X E, in crossed electric and magnetic fields strongly modifies the Poynting vector in magnetic materials and metamaterials, but do not contribute to the heat current. Calculating entropy fluxes of fluctuating Cooper pairs, we find the fluctuation Nernst coefficient in pure superconductors. To account electron scattering, we generalize the gauge-invariant Kubo formalism developed for the Hall effect to thermomagnetic entropy transfer. We also introduce the thermomagnetic entropy per unit charge and derive the Nernst coefficient proportional to the difference of the thermoelectric and thermomagnetic entropies. This explains the Sondheimer cancellation and high sensitivity of thermomagnetic phenomena to correlations. In 2D superconductors, the transport entropy transferred by a vortex moving through the background formed by vortex-antivortex pairs is the configuration entropy of kB ln 2, which strongly exceeds the intrinsic entropy of vortex core. Beyond the linear response, the non-entropic forces can lead to phenomena unexpected from thermodynamics, such as vortex attraction to the moving hot spot. We performed an optical spectroscopy study on single crystals of Pr$_{0.85}$LaCe$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (PLCCO) to revisit the electron-hole asymmetry, which has been understood as a fundamental property of cuprates. Four differently annealed samples - as-grown, reduced, optimally oxygenated, and over-oxygenated samples - were prepared, which have superconducting transition temperatures, $T_c$ = 0, 15, 24, and 18 K, respectively. We observed that low-energy quasiparticle spectral weights of all the PLCCO samples are significantly small in comparison with those of other electron-doped cuprate families. Instead, they are rather close to those of hole-doped counterpart La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). Accordingly, estimated effective carrier numbers per Cu atom ($N_{\mathrm{eff}}$/Cu) of superconducting samples are also considerably small, despite their relatively high critical temperatures. Complementary photoemission study reveals that the low-energy quasiparticle spectral weight of PLCCO is much smaller than that of Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (NCCO), consistent with the optical results. Our observations demonstrate that PLCCO provides the electron-hole symmetry in quasiparticle spectral weight, and highlight the importance of Cu3$d$-O2$p$ hybridization to understand the low-energy spectral weight transfer in doped cuprates., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

The coupling of spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom results in the emergence of novel states of matter across many classes of strongly correlated electron materials. A model example is unconventional superconductivity, which is widely believed to arise from the coupling of electrons via spin excitations. In cuprate high-temperature superconductors, the interplay of charge and spin degrees of freedom is also reflected in a zoo of charge and spin-density wave orders that are intertwined with superconductivity. A key question is whether the different types of density waves merely coexist or are indeed directly coupled. Here we profit from a neutron scattering technique with superior beam-focusing that allows us to probe the subtle spin-density wave order in the prototypical high-temperature superconductor La$${}_{1.88}$$ 1.88 Sr$${}_{0.12}$$ 0.12 CuO$${}_{4}$$ 4 under applied uniaxial pressure to demonstrate that the two density waves respond to the external tuning parameter in the same manner. Our result shows that suitable models for high-temperature superconductivity must equally account for charge and spin degrees of freedom via uniaxial charge-spin stripe fluctuations.

We derive the linearized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation on a spatially curved surface in the presence of a magnetic field. By introducing a novel transverse order parameter varying very slowly along the surface, we decouple the linearized GL equation into a surface part and a transverse part, and obtain the superconducting geometric potential (GP) under the superconducting/vacuum boundary condition. Further, we numerically study the nucleation of a rectangle thin superconducting film bent around the surface of a cylinder. Our results show that, the geometric curvature can weaken the effect of the magnetic field, and the competition between the applied magnetic field and the superconducting GP will lead to an abnormal $ T_c(B) $ dependence in the GP dominant region and a $ T_c $ enhancement in the magnetic field dominant region., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Two-dimensional Rashba superconductor Si(111)-$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-(Tl,Pb) is a candidate platform of mixed spin-singlet and -triplet superconductivity. A recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiment revealed a pseudogap at the vortex core, suggesting the finite triplet component [T. Nakamura $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. B $\bf{ 98}$, 134505 (2018)]. Detailed spectroscopic information of the superconducting gap and the low-energy band structure is necessary to establish the putative triplet superconductivity. Here, we performed high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging experiments on Si(111)-$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-(Tl,Pb) using an ultra-low temperature STM. We found that various spectroscopic features, including the vortex-core spectrum, are consistent with spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductivity, having no sign of the triplet component. The apparent contradiction with the previous STM result suggests that the nature of superconductivity changes within the same system. From the analysis of the quasiparticle interference patterns, we found that the Fermi energy is in the close vicinity of the saddle point near the $\overline{\rm{M}}$ point. We speculate that the nature of superconductivity varies depending on the saddle-point energy with respect to the Fermi energy, which is sample-dependent due to different band filling., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

For the first time, centre vortices are identified on SU(3) lattice ensembles that include dynamical fermions. Using a variational method, the static quark potential is calculated on untouched, vortex-removed, and vortex-only fields. Two dynamical ensembles and one pure gauge ensemble are studied, allowing for an exploration of the impact of dynamical fermions on the centre-vortex vacuum. Novel modifications to the standard Coulomb term are introduced to describe the long range behaviour of the vortex-removed potential. These modifications remove a source of systematic error in the fitted string tension on the original ensembles. Our pure Yang-Mills result is consistent with previous studies, where projected centre-vortex fields only reproduce approximately two thirds of the string tension. Remarkably, we find that the vortex-only fields on both dynamical lattices are able to fully reproduce the respective untouched string tensions., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We have previously shown that most of the anomalies in the superconducting characteristics of cuprates and ferropnictides observed at dopant concentrations within the superconducting dome, as well as the position of the domes in the phase diagrams, do not require knowledge of the details of their electronic structure for explanation, but can be understood and calculated with high accuracy within the framework of a simple model describing the cluster structure of the superconducting phase. This fact suggests a change in the paradigm that forms our understanding of HTSC. In this paper, we propose a unified view on the transformation of the electronic structure of cuprates and ferropnictides upon heterovalent and isovalent doping, based on the assumption of self-localization of doped carriers. In this representation, in undoped cuprates and ferropnictides, which initially have different electronic structures (Mott insulator and semimetal), local doping forms percolation clusters with the same electronic structure of a self-doped excitonic insulator where a specific mechanism of superconducting pairing is implemented, which is genetically inherent in such a system. The proposed model includes a mechanism for generating additional free carriers under heterovalent and isovalent doping and makes it possible to predict their sign, which, in the general case, does not coincide with the sign of doped carriers., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

This paper addresses the long standing and controversial issue of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates. Their superconductivity can be attributed to amphoteric defects associated with vacancy sites in copper oxide planes. A local defect lattice relaxation results in a negative-$U$ energy binding two holes on amphoteric defects in the donor configuration that act as preformed boson pair. Thermodynamic equilibrium between defects in the donor and acceptor configurations stabilizes Fermi energy at the amphoteric defect charge transition state assuring resonant coupling between free holes and the localized hole pairs. Model calculations show that the critical temperature is primarily determined by the density of the amphoteric defects in the donor configuration, explaining the ubiquity of dome-like dependence of the critical temperature on the doping as well as its universal dependence on the superfluid density. Intentional doping with chemical acceptors or donors is neither necessary nor sufficient condition for superconductivity that is fully determined by the amphoteric defects whose concentration can be controlled by crystal nonstoichiometry. The only role of chemical doping is changing the balance between concentrations of amphoteric defects in the donor and acceptor configurations resulting in an increase of the superfluid density and thus also the critical temperature for acceptor and a decrease for donor doping. This accounts for the experimentally observed distinct asymmetry between the dome structures for the chemical doping with acceptors and donors. The unusual sensitivity of the critical temperature to external perturbations is explained by the resonant nature of the coupling between free holes and preformed hole pairs. The work has broader implications as it could be applicable to other superconductors with dome-like dependence of the critical temperature on doping.

In most naturally occurring superconductors, electrons with opposite spins are paired up to form Cooper pairs. This includes both conventional $s$-wave superconductors such as aluminum as well as high-$T_c$, $d$-wave superconductors. Materials with intrinsic $p$-wave superconductivity, hosting Cooper pairs made of equal-spin electrons, have not been conclusively identified, nor synthesized, despite promising progress. Instead, engineered platforms where $s$-wave superconductors are brought into contact with magnetic materials have shown convincing signatures of equal-spin pairing. Here, we directly measure equal-spin pairing, proximity-induced from an $s$-wave superconductor into a semiconducting nanowire with strong spin-orbit interaction. We demonstrate such pairing using spin-selective quantum dots by showing that breaking a Cooper pair can result in two electrons with equal spin polarization. Our results demonstrate controllable detection of singlet and triplet pairing in the proximitized nanowire. Achieving such triplet pairing in a sequence of quantum dots will be required for realizing an artificial Kitaev chain.

We show that in two-band $s$-wave superfluids it is possible to induce quantum phase transitions (QPTs) by tuning intraband and interband $s$-wave interactions, in sharp contrast to single-band $s$-wave superfluids, where only a crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) superfluidity occurs. For non-zero interband and attractive intraband interactions, we demonstrate that the ground state has always two interpenetrating superfluids possessing three spectroscopically distinct regions where pairing is qualitatively different: (I) BCS pairing in both bands (BCS-BCS), (II) BCS pairing in one band and BEC pairing in the other (BCS-BEC), and (III) Bose pairing in both bands (BEC-BEC). Furthermore, we show that by fine tuning the interband interactions to zero one can induce QPTs in the ground state between three distinct superfluid phases. There are two phases where only one band is superfluid ($S_1$ or $S_2$), and one phase where both bands are superfluid $(S_1 + S_2)$, a situation which is absent in one-band $s$-wave systems. Lastly, we suggest that these crossovers and QPTs may be observed in $^{173}$Yb and $^{87}$Sr., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Traditional inorganic semiconductors can be electronically doped with high precision. Conversely, there is still conjecture regarding the assessment of the electronic doping density in metal-halide perovskites, not to mention of a control thereof. This paper presents a multifaceted approach to determine the electronic doping density for a range of different lead-halide perovskite systems. Optical and electrical characterization techniques, comprising intensity-dependent and transient photoluminescence, AC Hall effect, transfer-length-methods, and charge extraction measurements were instrumental in quantifying an upper limit for the doping density. The obtained values are subsequently compared to the electrode charge per cell volume under short-circuit conditions ([Formula: see text]), which amounts to roughly 1016 cm−3. This figure of merit represents the critical limit below which doping-induced charges do not influence the device performance. The experimental results consistently demonstrate that the doping density is below this critical threshold (∼1012 cm−3, which means ≪ [Formula: see text]) for all common lead-based metal-halide perovskites. Nevertheless, although the density of doping-induced charges is too low to redistribute the built-in voltage in the perovskite active layer, mobile ions are present in sufficient quantities to create space-charge-regions in the active layer, reminiscent of doped pn-junctions. These results are well supported by drift–diffusion simulations, which confirm that the device performance is not affected by such low doping densities.

Room temperature phonon dynamics in crystals of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) were probed using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Eight distinct acoustic modes were observed and identified, including two quasi-longitudinal bulk modes and four quasi-transverse bulk modes. A peak at a frequency shift of ~95 GHz with behaviour reminiscent of an optic phonon was also observed in the spectra. The existence and nature of these modes is a manifestation of the incommensurate structure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) and suggests that it may be categorized as a so-called composite incommensurate crystal comprised of two weakly interacting sublattices. A mass ratio of m1/m2=0.36 obtained from the two measured quasi-longitudinal acoustic velocities led to sublattice assignments of Bi2Sr2O4 and CaCu2O4. The Brillouin data also places an upper limit of ~10 GHz on the crossover frequency between commensurate and incommensurate phonon dynamics., Comment: 5 figures

The discovery of superconducting nickelates reignited hope for elucidating the high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ superconductivity mechanism in the isostructural cuprates. While in the cuprates, the superconducting gap opens up on a single-band of the quasi-2D Fermi surface, the nickelates are known to have 3D nature of electronic structure with multi-band. This raises a serious question about the role of 2D nature for the high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ superconductivity. Here, employing dynamical mean field theory combined with GW method, we found the Kondo effect driven by the strong correlation of Nd-4$f$ and Ni-3$d$ electrons emerging at low temperature. The Kondo effect modifies the topology of the Fermi surface leading to 3D multi-band nature. Remarkably, the Kondo effect is easily destroyed by lattice modulation, leading to the quasi-2D nature. Our findings clearly explain the inconsistent occurrence of superconductivity and distinct electrical resistivity behavior between NdNiO$_{2}$ bulk and films.

We consider a finite-size topological Josephson junction formed at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to conventional superconductors and study the impact of Cooper pair symmetries on the electron transport. We find that, due to the finite junction size, electron transport is highly tunable by the superconducting phase difference $\phi$ across the junction. At zero frequency and $\phi=\pi$, the setup exhibits vanishing local Andreev reflection and perfect normal transmission due to the interplay of finite junction size and formation of topological Andreev bound states in the middle of the junction. We reveal that this striking behavior enables odd-frequency Cooper pairs to become the only type of pairing inside the topological junction that contribute to transport. Superconductivity can be destroyed by a magnetic field with an upper bound known as the Pauli-limit in spin-singlet superconductors. Almost all the discovered superconductors are spin-singlet, with the highest transition temperature $T_c$ at ambient pressure achieved in the cuprate family. The closest cuprate analogue is the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate, which hosts substantial structural and electronic similarity to the cuprate. A previous magnetotransport study on Nd$_{0.775}$Sr$_{0.225}$NiO$_2$ has observed an isotropic Pauli-limited upper critical field. Here, we report a large violation (>2 times) of Pauli-limit in every crystallographic directions in La$_{1-x}$(Ca/Sr)$_x$NiO$_2$ regardless of the doping $x$. Such a large violation of the Pauli-limit in all directions in La$_{1-x}$(Ca/Sr)$_x$NiO$_2$ is unexpected and unlikely accounted by a Fulde Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-state, strong spin-orbit-coupling, strong-coupling or a large pseudogap. On the other hand, in agreement with the previous report, we observe a Pauli-limiting critical field in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ and the superconducting anisotropy decreases as doping increases, suggesting a spin-singlet pairing. Therefore, superconductivity in La$_{1-x}$(Ca/Sr)$_x$NiO$_2$ could be driven by a non-spin-singlet Cooper pairing mechanism with an attractive high-$T_c$ at 10 K, an order of magnitude higher than the known spin triplet superconductors, favourably extending the application of spin-triplet superconductivity in topological matter, non-dissipative spintronics, and quantum computing., 21 pages, 4 main figures, 2 extended data

We report the discovery of superconductivity in a series of noncentrosymmetric compounds La$_4$$TX$ ($T$ = Ru, Rh, Ir; $X$ = Al, In), which have a cubic crystal structure with space group $F\bar{4}3m$. La$_4$RuAl, La$_4$RhAl, La$_4$IrAl, La$_4$RuIn and La$_4$IrIn exhibit bulk superconducting transitions with critical temperatures $T_c$ of 1.77 K, 3.05 K, 1.54 K, 0.58 K and 0.93 K, respectively. The specific heat of the La$_4$$T$Al compounds are consistent with an $s$-wave model with a fully open superconducting gap. In all cases, the upper critical fields are well described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, and the values are well below the Pauli limit, indicating that orbital limiting is the dominant pair-breaking mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the degree of band splitting by the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) shows considerable variation between the different compounds. This indicates that the strength of the ASOC is highly tunable across this series of superconductors, suggesting that these are good candidates for examining the relationship between the ASOC and superconducting properties in noncentrosymmetric superconductors., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Studies involving vortex dynamics and their interaction with pinning centers are an important ingredient to reach higher critical currents in superconducting materials. The vortex distribution around arrays of engineered defects, such as blind and through holes, may help to improve the superconducting properties. Thus, in this work, we used the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to investigate the vortex dynamics in superconductors of mesoscopic dimensions with a large central square defect with three different configurations: (i) a hole which passes through the sample (interface with the vacuum); (ii) a superconducting region with lower critical temperature (Tc); and (iii) a region with a more robust superconductivity, i.e., with a higherTc. Such systems can be envisaged as elementary building blocks of a macroscopic decorated specimen. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of different interfaces on the vortex dynamics and their effects in the field-dependent magnetization and time-dependent induced electric potential variation. The results show that the lower critical field is independent from the nature of the defect. However, the currents crowd at the vertices of the through hole producing a lower degradation of the local superconductivity, which may increase the upper critical field. On the other hand, the last type of defect can be used to control the vortex dynamics in the main superconducting region around the defect with more accuracy. Cuprates are d-wave superconductors which exhibit a rich phase diagram: they are characterized by superconducting fluctuations even above the critical temperature, and thermal disorder can reduce or suppress the phase coherence. However, photoexcitation can have the opposite effect: recent experiments have shown an increasing phase coherence in optimally doped BSCCO with mid-infrared driving. Time-resolved terahertz spectroscopies are powerful techniques to excite and probe non-equilibrium states of superconductors, directly addressing collective modes, such as amplitude (Higgs) oscillations. In this work, we calculate the full time evolution of the current generated by a cuprate with a quench-drive spectroscopy setup. Analyzing the response in Fourier space with respect to both the real time and the quench-drive delay time, we look for the signature of a transient modulation of higher harmonics as well as the Higgs mode, in order to characterize the ground state phase. In particular, this approach can provide a smoking gun for induced or increased phase coherence when applied to the pseudogap phase. These results can pave the way for future experimental schemes to characterize and study superconductors alongside incoherent phases and phase transitions, including induced and transient superconductivity., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

In conventional superconductors, the electron-phonon coupling plays a dominant role in pairing the electrons and generating superconductivity. In high temperature cuprate superconductors, the existence of the electron coupling with phonons and other boson modes and its role in producing high temperature superconductivity remain unclear. The evidence of the electron-boson coupling mainly comes from the angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) observations of the ~70meV nodal dispersion kink and the ~40meV antinodal kink. However, the reported results are sporadic and the nature of the involved bosons are still under debate. Here we report new findings of ubiquitous two coexisting electron-mode couplings in cuprate superconductors. By taking ultra-high resolution laser-based ARPES measurements, combined with the improved second derivative analysis method, we discovered that the electrons are coupled simultaneously with two sharp phonon modes with energies of ~70meV and ~40meV in different superconductors with different doping levels, over the entire momentum space and at different temperatures above and below the superconducting transition temperature. The observed electron-phonon couplings are unusual because the associated energy scales do not exhibit an obvious change across the superconducting transition. We further find that the well-known "peak-dip-hump" structure, which has long been considered as a hallmark of superconductivity, is also omnipresent and consists of finer structures that originates from electron coupling with two sharp phonon modes. These comprehensive results provide a unified picture to reconcile all the reported observations and pinpoint the origin of the electron-mode couplings in cuprate superconductors. They provide key information to understand the role of the electron-phonon coupling in generating high temperature superconductivity.

We study the transport properties of a Josephson junction consisting of two identical $s$-wave superconductors separated by an even-layer ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ (MBT). Using recursive Green's function method, we calculate the supercurrent in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and find that its quantum interference exhibits distinct patterns when the MBT is in different magnetic states. In the antiferromagnetic state, the MBT is an axion insulator supporting an extended "hinge" supercurrent, which leads to a sinusoidal interference pattern decaying with the field strength. In the ferromagnetic state, the MBT is a Chern insulator and the unbalanced chiral supercurrents on opposite edges give rise to a highly asymmetric interference pattern. If the MBT turns into a metal as the Fermi level is tuned into the conduction band, the interference exhibits a Fraunhofer pattern due to the uniformly distributed bulk supercurrent. Our work unravels a strong indicator to identify different phases in the MBT and can be verified directly by experiments.

In gauge-Higgs unification (GHU), gauge symmetry is dynamically broken by an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase, $\theta_H$, in the fifth dimension. We analyze $SU(2)$ GHU with an $SU(2)$ doublet fermion in flat $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ spacetime and in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped space. With orbifold boundary conditions the $U(1)$ part of gauge symmetry remains unbroken at $\theta_H = 0$ and $\pi$. The fermion multiplet has chiral zero modes at $\theta_H = 0$, which become massive at $\theta_H = \pi$. In other words chiral fermions are transformed to vectorlike fermions by the AB phase $\theta_H$. Chiral anomaly at $\theta_H = 0$ continuously varies as $\theta_H$ and vanishes at $\theta_H=\pi$. We demonstrate this intriguing phenomenon in the RS space in which there occurs no level crossing in the mass spectrum and everything varies smoothly. The flat spacetime limit is singular as the AdS curvature of the RS space diminishes, and reproduces the result in the flat spacetime. Anomalies appear for various combinations of Kaluza-Klein excitation modes of gauge fields as well. Although the magnitude of anomalies depends on $\theta_{H}$ and the warp factor of the RS space, it does not depend on the bulk mass parameter of the fermion field controlling its mass and wave function at general $\theta_H$., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, a few comments are added

In this work we explore the interplay between superconductivity and nematicity in the framework of a Ginzburg Landau theory with a nematic order parameter coupled to the superconductor order parameter, often used in the description of superconductivity of Fe based materials. In particular, we focus on the study of the vortex-vortex interaction in order to determine the way nematicity affects its attractive or repulsive character. To do so, we use a dynamical method based on the solutions of the Time Dependent Ginzburg Landau equations in a bulk superconductor. An important contribution of our work is the implementation of a pseudo-spectral method to solve the dynamics, known to be highly efficient and of very high order in comparison to the usual finite differences/elements methods. The coupling between the superconductor and the (real) nematic order parameters is represented by two terms in the free energy: a biquadratic term and a coupling of the nematic order parameter to the covariant derivatives of the superconductor order parameter. Our results show that there is a competing effect: while the former independently of its competitive or cooperative character generates an attractive vortex-vortex interaction, the latter always generates a repulsive interaction., Comment: 37 pages; 12 figures; corrected typos; added references

Superconducting devices subject to strong charging energy interactions and Coulomb blockade are one of the key elements for the development of nanoelectronics and constitute common building blocks of quantum computation platforms and topological superconducting setups. The study of their transport properties is non-trivial and some of their non-perturbative aspects are hard to capture with the most ordinary techniques. Here we present a matrix product state approach to simulate the real-time dynamics of these systems. We propose a study of their transport based on the analysis of the currents after quantum quenches connecting such devices with external leads. Our method is based on the combination of a Wilson chain construction for the leads and a mean-field BCS description for the superconducting scatterers. In particular, we employ a quasiparticle energy eigenbasis which greatly reduces their entanglement growth and we introduce an auxiliary degree of freedom to encode the device total charge. This approach allows us to treat non-perturbatively both their charging energy and coupling with external electrodes. We show that our construction is able to describe the Coulomb diamond structure of a superconducting dot with subgap states, including its sequential tunneling and cotunneling features. We also study the conductance zero-bias peaks caused by Majorana modes in a blockaded Kitaev chain, and compare our results with common Breit-Wigner predictions., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

We show that Weyl superconductivity can be induced by finite supercurrent in noncentrosymmetric spin-orbit-coupled superconductors with line nodes. We introduce a three-dimensional tight-binding model of a tetragonal superconductor in a $D+p$-wave pairing state with a finite center-of-mass momentum, and elucidate that a line-nodal to point-nodal spectral transition occurs by applying an infinitesimal supercurrent. We also clarify that the higher-order effect in spin-orbit coupling is particularly important for this phenomenon. The point nodes are protected by topologically nontrivial Weyl charges, and therefore gapless arc states appear on the surface of the superconductor. Furthermore, both the positions and the Weyl charges of the point nodes depend on the direction of the current. In addition, a quantized Berry phase defined on high-symmetry planes characterizes the Weyl nodes when the in-plane supercurrent is considered. The discovery of high-$T_c$ conventional superconductivity in high-pressure hydrides has helped establish computational methods as a formidable tool to guide material discoveries in a field traditionally dominated by serendipitous experimental search. This paves the way to an ever-increasing use of data-driven approaches to the study and design of superconductors. In this work, we propose a new method to generate meaningful datasets of superconductors, based on element substitution into a small set of representative structural templates, generated by crystal structure prediction methods (MultiTemplate-HighThroughput approach). Our approach realizes an optimal compromise between structural variety and computational efficiency, and can be easily generalized to other elements and compositions. As a first application, we apply it to binary hydrides at high pressure, realizing a database of 880 hypothetical structures, characterized with a set of electronic, vibrational and chemical descriptors. 139 structures of our $Superhydra$ Database are superconducting according to the McMillan-Allen-Dynes approximation. Studying the distribution of $T_c$ and other properties across the database with advanced statistical and visualization techniques, we are able to obtain comprehensive material maps of the phase space of binary hydrides. We study spin configurations of classical magnetic impurities placed close to the edge of a two-dimensional topological superconductor both analytically and numerically. First, we demonstrate that the spin of a single magnetic impurity close to the edge of a topological superconductor tends to align along the edge. The strong easy-axis spin anisotropy behind this effect originates from the interaction between the impurity and the gapless helical Majorana edge states. We then compute the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two magnetic impurities placed close to the edge. We show that, in the limit of large interimpurity distances, the RKKY interaction between the two impurities is mainly mediated by the Majorana edge states and leads to a ferromagnetic alignment of both spins along the edge. This effect could be used to detect helical Majorana edge states.

The structural, electronic, lattice dynamics, electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting properties of the alkali-metal hydride RbH, metalized through electron-doping by the construction of the solid-solution Rb$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$H, are systematically analyzed as a function of Sr-content within the framework of density functional perturbation and Migdal-Eliashberg theories, taking into account the effect of zero-point energy contribution by the quasi-harmonic approximation. For the entire studied range of Sr-content, steady increments of the electron-phonon coupling constant and the superconducting critical temperature are found with progressive alkaline-earth metal content through electron-doping, reaching the values of $\lambda=1.92$ and $T_c=51.3(66.1)$~K with $\mu^*$=0.1(0). The steady rise of such quantities as a function of Sr-content is consequence of the metallization of the hydride as an increase of density of states at the Fermi level is observed, as well as the softening of the phonon spectrum, mainly coming from H-optical modes. Our results indicate that electron-doping on metal-hydrides is an encouraging alternative to look for superconductivity without applied pressure., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report on the direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatterings involving up to as many as eight individual phonon modes in mono- and bilayer films, among which transverse, longitudinal acoustic and optical, and flexural optical phonons play significant roles in quantum charge flows. Moreover, we observe that two-phonon inelastic electron tunneling processes, which are confirmed to be generic in all four semiconducting layers, are governed by layer-number dependent symmetry, quantum interference, and geometric Berry phase.

We performed a first-principles study of the tunneling anisotropic magneto-resistance (TAMR) in Ag(Ir,Pt)$/$MgO$/$Fe junctions. Enhanced TAMR with ideal and skewed fourfold angular dependence is found in-plane and out-of-plane TAMR of the system, respectively, which shows simple barrier thickness dependency with number around 10\% in some junctions. The complex angular dependency of the interfacial resonant states due to the spin-orbit coupling should be responsible to the complex and enhanced TAMR found in these junctions., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Combination of proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetic exchange field in a two-dimensional square-lattice antiferromagnet with spin-orbit coupling and nonsymmorphic symmetry can induce a topological superconductor phase with chiral Majorana edge states. The lattice model of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian was applied to study the phase diagram of bulks and chiral Majorana edge states in nanoribbons. By numerically studying the phase diagram, we found that the non-uniformity of either the superconducting pairing parameters or the exchange field at the two sublattices is necessary to induce a topological superconductor phase with chiral Majorana edge states. The BdG Chern number of certain topological superconductor phases is $\pm1$ or $\pm3$, such that the corresponding nanoribbons have one or three pairs of chiral Majorana edge states, respectively., Comment: 4 figures

We show that the Migdal-Eliashberg theory loses validity at a finite value $\lambda_c$ of the electron-phonon coupling $\lambda$ regardless of the underlying model Hamiltonian. The value of $\lambda_c$ is approximately between 3.0 and 3.7. The new phase that emerges at $\lambda>\lambda_c$ breaks the lattice translational symmetry. Depending on the filling fraction and crystal symmetry, it is an insulator or a Fermi liquid. Its characteristic feature is a gap or a pronounced depression of the fermionic density of states near the Fermi level. We establish the breakdown from within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory by demonstrating that the normal state specific heat is negative for $\lambda\ge 3.7$ and the quasiparticle lifetime vanishes in the strong coupling limit. At fixed $\lambda>\lambda_c$, the transition to the new phase occurs at a critical temperature higher than the superconducting transition temperature. In addition, there is a first order phase transition between the new phase and the superconducting state as we vary $\lambda$ across $\lambda_c$ at fixed temperature. We put forward a new theory - lattice-fermionic theory of superfluidity - that bridges the gap between the Migdal-Eliashberg approach and the physics at stronger coupling. Symmetry breaking beyond a global U(1) phase is the key signature of unconventional superconductors. As prototypical strongly correlated materials, heavy-fermion metals provide ideal platforms for realizing unconventional superconductivity. In this article, we review heavy-fermion superconductivity, with a focus on those materials with multiple superconducting phases. In this context, we highlight the role of orbital-selective (matrix) pairing functions, which are defined as matrices in the space of effective orbital degrees of freedom such as electronic orbitals and sublattices as well as equivalent descriptions in terms of intra- and inter-band pairing components in the band basis. The role of quantum criticality and the associated strange-metal physics in the development of unconventional superconductivity is emphasized throughout. We discuss in some detail the recent experimental observations and theoretical perspectives in the illustrative cases of UTe2, CeRh2As2, and CeCu2Si2, where applied magnetic fields or pressure induce a variety of superconducting phases. The iron-based superconductors had a significant impact on condensed matter physics. They have a common structural motif of a two-dimensional square iron lattice and exhibit fruitful physical properties as a strongly correlated electron system. During the extensive investigations, quasi-one-dimensional iron-based spin-ladder compounds attracted much attention as a platform for studying the interplay between magnetic and orbital ordering. In these compounds, BaFe2S3 and BaFe2Se3 were found to exhibit superconductivity under high pressure, having a different crystal and magnetic structure at low temperature. We report a brief review of the iron-based spin-ladder compound and recent studies for BaFe2+d(S1-xSex)3. BaFe2(S0.75 Se0.25)3 is in the vicinity of the boundary of two different magnetic phases and it is intriguing to perform high pressure experiments for studying superconductivity, since effects of large magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity are expected. The effect of iron stoichiometry on the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is also studied by changing the iron concentration in BaFe2+dSe3., 13 pages, 9 figures

A general problem of magnetic sensors is a trade-off between spatial resolution and magnetic field sensitivity. With decreasing sensor size its resolution is improved but the sensitivity is deteriorated. Obviation of such the trade-off requires development of super-resolution imaging technique, not limited by the sensor size. Here we present a proof of concept for a super-resolution method of magnetic imaging by a Josephson junction. It is based on a solution of an inverse problem - reconstruction of a local magnetic field distribution within a junction from the dependence of the critical current on an external magnetic field, Ic(H). The method resembles the Fourier-transform holography, with the diffraction-like Ic(H) pattern serving as a hologram. A simple inverse problem solution, valid for an arbitrary symmetric case, is derived. We verify the method numerically and show that the accuracy of reconstruction does not depend on the junction size and is only limited by the field range of the Ic(H) pattern. Finally, the method is tested experimentally using planar Nb Josephson junctions. Super-resolution reconstruction of stray magnetic fields from an Abrikosov vortex, trapped in the junction electrodes, is demonstrated. Thus, our method facilitate both the high field sensitivity and high spatial resolution, obviating the trade-off problem of magnetic sensors. In this article, we report magneto-heat capacity analysis of superconducting SnAs, which is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and magneto-transport measurements. The studied SnAs superconductor evidenced the presence of superconductivity at around 4K, and the same is seen to persist up to an applied field of 250Oe. The bulk nature of superconductivity is determined through AC susceptibility along with heat capacity measurements. Magneto-heat capacity measurements show SnAs to be a fully gapped s wave superconductor. This finding is well supported by calculated superconducting physical parameters. We report high pressure studies on the C-type antiferromagnetic semiconductor EuTe2 up to 36.0 GPa. A structural transition from the I4/mcm to C2/m space group is identified at ~16 GPa. Superconductivity is discovered above ~5 GPa in both the I4/mcm and C2/m space groups. In the low-pressure phase (< 16 GPa), the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is enhanced with increasing pressure due to the enhanced magnetic exchange interactions. Magnetoresistance measurements indicate an interplay between the local moments of Eu2+ and the conduction electrons of Te 5p orbits. The upper critical field of the superconductivity is well above the Pauli limit. Across the structural transition to the high-pressure phase (> 16 GPa), EuTe2 becomes nonmagnetic and the superconducting transition temperature evolves smoothly with the upper critical field below the Pauli limit. Therefore, the high upper critical field of EuTe2 in the low-pressure phase is due to the exchange field compensation effect of the Eu magnetic order and the superconductivity in both structures may arise in the framework of the BCS theory., 11 pages,5 figures with 8 pages supplementary

The paper reassesses the old dilemma "compact vs. extended phase" in the quantum theory of the rotator and the Josephson junction and the analogy of these two systems with the a particle moving in a periodic potential. This dilemma is in fact the dilemma whether the states with the phases $\varphi$ and $\varphi+2\pi$ are distinguishable, or not. In the past it was widely accepted that in the Josephson junction these states are distinguishable like for a particle moving in a periodic potential. This paper argues that the states with the phases $\varphi$ and $\varphi+2\pi$ are indistinguishable as in a pendulum (a particular example of the quantum rotator). We answer in affirmative the absence of superconductivity in bulk prepared samples of doped infinite-layer Nickelates through a simple magnetostatic model. In an independent approach we also employ Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for the same investigation. Our investigations reveal that it is the formation of Nickel clusters and Nickel deficient regions in bulk prepared samples (as opposed to thin films) that leads to the absence of superconductivity in bulk prepared samples.

Materials with a kagome lattice provide a platform for searching for new electronic phases and investigating the interplay between correlation and topology. Various probes have recently shown that the kagome lattice can host diverse quantum phases with intertwined orders, including charge density wave states, bond density wave states, chiral charge order, and, rarely, superconductivity. However, reports of the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order in kagome materials remain elusive. Here we revisit a magnetic superconductor CeRu$_2$ with a kagome network formed by Ru atoms. Our first-principles calculations revealed a kagome flat band near the Fermi surface, indicative of flat-band magnetism. At ambient pressure, CeRu$_2$ exhibits a superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\text{c}}$) up to ~ 6 K and a magnetic order at ~ 40 K. Notably, superconductivity and related behavior can be tuned by adjusting the amount of Ru. We conducted a systematic investigation of the superconductivity and magnetic order in CeRu$_2$ via magnetic, resistivity, and structural measurements under pressure up to ~ 168 GPa. An unusual phase diagram that suggests an intriguing interplay between the compound's superconducting order parameters has been constructed. A $T_{\text{c}}$ resurgence was observed above pressure of ~ 28 GPa, accompanied by the sudden appearance of a secondary superconducting transition. Our experiments have identified tantalizing phase transitions driven by high pressure and suggest that the superconductivity and magnetism in CeRu$_2$ are strongly intertwined., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; v2: corrected author order

Two contradictory phase diagrams have dominated the literature of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. Does the pseudogap line cross the superconducting $T_c$-dome or not? To answer, we have revisited the experimental magnetic susceptibility and knight shift of four different compounds, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_8$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$, and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$, as a function of temperature and doping. The susceptibility can be described by the same function for all materials, having a magnetic and an electronic contributions. The former is the 2D antiferromagnetic (AF) square lattice response, with a characteristic temperature of magnetic correlations $T_{max}$. The latter is the `Pauli' term, revealing the gap opening in the electronic density of states at the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. From precise fits of the data, we find that $T_{max}(p)$ decreases linearly as a function of doping ($p$) over a wide range, but saturates abruptly in the overdoped regime. Concomitantly, $T^*(p)$ is {\it linear and tangent} to the dome, either crossing or approaching $T_{max}(p)$ at the top of the dome, indicating a qualitative change of behavior from underdoped to overdoped regimes. Contrary to the idea that the pseudogap terminates just above optimal doping, our analysis suggests that the gap exists throughout the phase diagram. It is consistent with a pseudogap due to hole pairs, or `pairons', above $T_c$. We conclude that $T_{max}$, reflecting the AF magnetic correlations, has often been misinterpreted as the pseudogap temperature $T^*$., Comment: Solid State Communications (in press, February 2022)

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a unique platform to study unconventional superconductivity, owing to the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and a remarkable stability to an in-plane magnetic field. A recent study found that when an in-plane field applied to a superconducting monolayer TMD is increased beyond the Pauli critical limit, a quantum phase transition occurs into a topological nodal superconducting phase which hosts Majorana flat bands. We study the current-phase relation of this nodal superconductor in a Josephson junction geometry. We find that the nodal superconductivity is associated with an energy-phase relation that depends on the momentum transverse to the current direction, with a $4\pi$ periodicity in between pairs of nodal points. We interpret this response as a result of a series of quantum phase transitions, driven by the transverse momentum, which separate a topological trivial phase and two distinct topologically non-trivial phases characterized by different winding invariants. We revisit the mechanism of vortex unpinning caused by the neutron-vortex scattering \cite{prad1} in the inner crust of a pulsar. The strain energy released by the crustquake is assumed to be absorbed in some part of the inner crust and causes pair-breaking quasi-neutron excitations from the existing free neutron superfluid in the bulk of the inner crust. The scattering of these quasi-neutrons with the vortex core normal neutrons unpins a large number of vortices from the thermally affected regions and results in pulsar glitches. We consider the geometry of a cylindrical shell of the affected pinning region to study the implications of the vortex unpinning in the context of pulsar glitches. We find that a pulsar can release about $\sim 10^{11} - 10^{13}$ vortices by this mechanism. These numbers are equivalent to the glitch size of orders $\sim 10^{-11} - 10^{-9}$ for Vela-like pulsars with the characteristic age $\tau \simeq 10^4$ years. We also suggest a possibility of a vortex avalanche triggered by the movement of the unpinned vortices.
