Search

In a topological insulator the metallic surface states are easily distinguished from the insulating bulk states (FuKane07). By contrast, in a topological superconductor (FuKane08,Qi,FuBerg,Oppen), much less is known about the relationship between an edge supercurrent and the bulk pair condensate. Can we force their pairing symmetries to be incompatible? In the superconducting state of the Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$, an edge supercurrent is observed as oscillations in the current-voltage (\emph{I-V}) curves induced by fluxoid quantization (Wang). We have found that the $s$-wave pairing potential of supercurrent injected from niobium contacts is incompatible with the intrinsic pair condensate in MoTe$_2$. The incompatibility leads to strong stochasticity in the switching current $I_c$ as well as other anomalous properties such as an unusual antihysteretic behavior of the ``wrong'' sign. Under supercurrent injection, the fluxoid-induced edge oscillations survive to much higher magnetic fields \emph{H}. Interestingly, the oscillations are either very noisy or noise-free depending on the pair potential that ends up dictating the edge pairing. Using the phase noise as a sensitive probe that eavesdrops on the competiting bulk states, we uncover an underlying blockade mechanism whereby the intrinsic condensate can pre-emptively block proximitization by the Nb pair potential depending on the history., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

The Kitaev model predicts that quantum spin liquids (QSLs) will form at low temperatures under certain special conditions, and materials hosting the QSL state are frequently sought. The layered honeycomb lattice material ��-RuCl3 has emerged as a prime candidate for displaying the Kitaev QSL state. Here we describe a new polymorph of RuI3 with a layered honeycomb lattice structure, synthesized at moderately high pressures and stable under ambient conditions. Preliminary characterization reveals metallic, paramagnetic behavior, the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 0.35 K and an unusually large T-linear contribution to the heat capacity at low temperatures. We propose that this RuI3 phase, with a layered honeycomb lattice and strong spin-orbit coupling, provides a new route for the characterization of quantum materials.

We report the synthesis and initial characterization of Ba6Y2Rh2Ti2O17-��, a previously unreported material with a hexagonal symmetry structure. Face-sharing RhO6 octahedra form triangular planes of Rh2O9 dimers that are widely separated in the perpendicular direction. The material displays a small effective magnetic moment, due to the Rh ions present, and a negative Curie-Weiss temperature. The charge transport and optical band gaps are very similar, near 0.16 eV. A large upturn in the heat capacity at temperatures below 1 K, suppressed by applied magnetic fields larger than {��0H = 2 Tesla, is observed. A large T-linear term in the specific heat (��=166 mJ/mol f.u-K2) is seen, although the material is insulating at low temperatures. The crystal structures of the Sr1-xCaxRuO3 perovskites are investigated using both long range and local structural probes. High resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction characterization at ambient temperature shows that the materials are orthorhombic to high precision, and we support previous work showing that Ca2+ substitution for Sr2+ primarily changes the tilting of rigid corner-sharing RuO6 octahedra at their shared oxygen vertices. X-ray pair distribution function analysis for SrRuO3, CaRuO3 and one intermediate composition show them to be locally monoclinic, and no long range or local phase transitions are observed between 80 and 300 K for materials with intermediate compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the Sr/Ca distribution is random at the nanoscale. In the Dirac/Weyl semimetal, the chiral anomaly appears as an "axial" current arising from charge-pumping between the lowest (chiral) Landau levels of the Weyl nodes, when an electric field is applied parallel to a magnetic field $\bf B$. Evidence for the chiral anomaly was obtained from the longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) in Na$_3$Bi and GdPtBi. However, current jetting effects (focussing of the current density $\bf J$) have raised general concerns about LMR experiments. Here we implement a litmus test that allows the intrinsic LMR in Na$_3$Bi and GdPtBi to be sharply distinguished from pure current jetting effects (in pure Bi). Current jetting enhances $J$ along the mid-ridge (spine) of the sample while decreasing it at the edge. We measure the distortion by comparing the local voltage drop at the spine (expressed as the resistance $R_{spine}$) with that at the edge ($R_{edge}$). In Bi, $R_{spine}$ sharply increases with $B$ but $R_{edge}$ decreases (jetting effects are dominant). However, in Na$_3$Bi and GdPtBi, both $R_{spine}$ and $R_{edge}$ decrease (jetting effects are subdominant). A numerical simulation allows the jetting distortions to be removed entirely. We find that the intrinsic longitudinal resistivity $\rho_{xx}(B)$ in Na$_3$Bi decreases by a factor of 10.9 between $B$ = 0 and 10 T. A second litmus test is obtained from the parametric plot of the planar angular magnetoresistance. These results strenghthen considerably the evidence for the intrinsic nature of the chiral-anomaly induced LMR. We report the crystal field levels of several newly-discovered rare-earth kagome compounds: $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$, $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Zn_2O_{14}}$, and $\rm{Pr_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$. We determine the CEF Hamiltonian by fitting to neutron scattering data using a point-charge Hamiltonian as an intermediate fitting step. The fitted Hamiltonians accurately reproduce bulk susceptibility measurements, and the results indicate easy-axis ground state doublets for $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$ and $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Zn_2O_{14}}$, and a singlet ground state for $\rm{Pr_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$. These results provide the groundwork for future investigations of these compounds and a template for CEF analysis of other low-symmetry materials., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, and 10 pages supplemental materials

A new pyrochlore compound, NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$, was recently synthesized and has a single magnetic site with spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$. We present zero field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) muon spin rotation ($��$SR) measurements on this pyrochlore. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the most likely muon site is located between two fluorine ions, but off-centre. A characteristic F-$��$-F muon spin polarization function is observed at high temperatures where Ni spin fluctuations are sufficiently rapid. The Ni$^{2+}$ spins undergo spin freezing into a disordered ground state below 4~K, with a characteristic internal field strength of 140~G. Persistent Ni spin dynamics are present to our lowest temperatures (75~mK), a feature characteristic of many geometrically frustrated magnetic systems.

We report the magnetic structure and electronic properties of the honeycomb antiferromagnet $\rm NaNi_2BiO_{5.66}$. We find magnetic order with moments along the $c$ axis for temperatures below $T_{c1}=6.3(1)\>{\rm K}$ and then in the honeycomb plane for $T < T_{c2}=4.8(1)\>{\rm K}$ with a counterrotating pattern and an ordering wave vector ${\bf q}=(\frac{1}{3},\> \frac{1}{3},\> 0.15(1))$. Density functional theory and electron spin resonance indicate this is high-spin Ni$^{3+}$ magnetism near a high to low spin transition. The ordering wave vector, in-plane magnetic correlations, missing entropy, spin state, and superexchange pathways are all consistent with bond-dependent Kitaev-$��$-Heisenberg exchange interactions in $\rm NaNi_2BiO_{6-��}$., 12 pages, 11 figures, 8 pages of appendices

MoTe_2, with the orthorhombic T_d phase, is a new type (type-II) of Weyl semimetal, where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR), and superconductivity were also observed in T_d-MoTe_2. Understanding the superconductivity in T_d-MoTe_2, which was proposed to be topologically non-trivial, is of eminent interest. Here, we report high-pressure (p_max = 1.3 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in T_d-MoTe_2. A substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s/m^* and a linear scaling with T_c is observed under pressure. Moreover, the superconducting order parameter in T_d-MoTe_2 is determined to be two gap (s+s)-wave symmetric. We also excluded time reversal symmetry breaking in the SC state with sensitive zero-field ${\mu}$SR experiments. Considering the previous report \cite{Balicas1} on the strong suppression of T_c in T_d-MoTe_2 by disorder, we suggest that s^{+-} (topological order parameter) state is more likely to be realized in MoTe_2 than the s^{++} (trivial) state. Should s^{+-} be the SC gap symmetry, the T_d-MoTe_2 is, to our knowledge, the first known example of a time reversal invariant topological (Weyl) superconductor., Comment: 15 pages and 9 figures

The antiferromagnetic pyrochlore material NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$ is a thermal spin liquid over a broad temperature range (~ 140 K down to $T_F = 2.4 $K), in which magnetic correlations between Co$^{2+}$ dipole moments explore a continuous manifold of antiferromagnetic XY states. The thermal spin liquid is interrupted by spin freezing at a temperature that is ~ 2 % of the mean field interaction strength, leading to short range static XY clusters with distinctive relaxation dynamics. Here we report the low energy inelastic neutron scattering response from the related compound NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$, confirming that it hosts the same static and dynamic spin correlations as NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$. We then present the single-ion levels of Co$^{2+}$ in these materials as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. An intermediate spin orbit coupling model applied to an ensemble of trigonally distorted octahedral crystal fields accounts for the observed transitions. The single-ion ground state of Co$^{2+}$ is a Kramers doublet with a strongly XY-like $g$-tensor ($g_{xy}/g_{z}$ ~ 3). The local disorder inherent from the mixed pyrochlore $A$ sites (Na$^{+}$/Ca$^{2+}$ and Na$^{+}$/Sr$^{2+}$) is evident in these measurements as exaggerated broadening of some of the levels. A simple model that reproduces the salient features of the single-ion spectrum produces approximately 8.4 % and 4.1 % variation in the $z$ and $xy$ components of the $g$-tensor, respectively. This study confirms that an $S_{eff} =1/2$ model with XY antiferromagnetic exchange and weak exchange disorder serves as a basic starting point in understanding the low temperature magnetic behavior of these strongly frustrated magnets., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We present a time- and angular-resolved photoemission (TR-ARPES) study of the transition- metal dichalcogenide WTe2, a candidate type II Weyl semimetal exhibiting extremely large magne- toresistence. Using femtosecond light pulses, we characterize the unoccupied states of the electron pockets above the Fermi level. We track the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited electrons along the unoccupied band structure and into a bulk hole pocket. Following the ultrafast carrier relaxation, we report remarkably similar decay dynamics for electrons and holes. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that carrier compensation is a key factor in the exceptional magnetotransport properties of WTe2.

We report the detailed optical properties of Cd$_3$As$_2$ crystals in a wide parameter space: temperature, magnetic field, carrier concentration and crystal orientation. We investigate high-quality crystals synthesized by three different techniques. In all the studied samples, independently of how they were prepared and how they were treated before the optical experiments, our data indicate conspicuous fluctuations in the carrier density (up to 30%). These charge puddles have a characteristic scale of 100 $\mu$m, they become more pronounced at low temperatures, and possibly, they become enhanced by the presence of crystal twinning. The Drude response is characterized by very small scattering rates ($\sim 1$ meV) for as-grown samples. Mechanical treatment, such as cutting or polishing, influences the optical properties of single crystals, by increasing the Drude scattering rate and also modifying the high frequency optical response. Magneto-reflectivity and Kerr rotation are consistent with electron-like charge carriers and a spatially non-uniform carrier density., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review B

By combining bulk sensitive soft-X-ray angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and accurate first-principles calculations we explored the bulk electronic properties of WTe$_2$, a candidate type-II Weyl semimetal featuring a large non-saturating magnetoresistance. Despite the layered geometry suggesting a two-dimensional electronic structure, we find a three-dimensional electronic dispersion. We report an evident band dispersion in the reciprocal direction perpendicular to the layers, implying that electrons can also travel coherently when crossing from one layer to the other. The measured Fermi surface is characterized by two well-separated electron and hole pockets at either side of the $\Gamma$ point, differently from previous more surface sensitive ARPES experiments that additionally found a significant quasiparticle weight at the zone center. Moreover, we observe a significant sensitivity of the bulk electronic structure of WTe$_2$ around the Fermi level to electronic correlations and renormalizations due to self-energy effects, previously neglected in first-principles descriptions.

The recent discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaSb introduced lanthanum monopnictides as a new platform to study topological semimetals (TSMs). In this work we report the discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaBi, confirming lanthanum monopnictides as a promising family of TSMs. These binary compounds with the simple rock-salt structure are ideal model systems to search for the origin of extreme magnetoresistance. Through a comparative study of magnetotransport effects in LaBi and LaSb, we construct a triangular temperature-field phase diagram that illustrates how a magnetic field tunes the electronic behavior in these materials. We show that the triangular phase diagram can be generalized to other topological semimetals with different crystal structures and different chemical compositions. By comparing our experimental results to band structure calculations, we suggest that extreme magnetoresistance in LaBi and LaSb originates from a particular orbital texture on their qasi-2D Fermi surfaces. The orbital texture, driven by spin-orbit coupling, is likely to be a generic feature of various topological semimetals., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

We present results of $^{23}$Na and $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$, a frustrated pyrochlore magnet with a Curie-Weiss temperature, $T_{cw}$ ~-140 K, and intrinsic bond disorder. Below 3.6 K both the $^{23}$Na and $^{19}$F spectra broaden substantially in comparison to higher temperatures accompanied by a considerable reduction (80 \%) of the NMR signal intensity: This proves a broad quasi-static field distribution. The $^{19}$F spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{19}(1/T_1$) exhibits a peak at 2.9 K already starting to develop below 10 K. We attribute the spin freezing to the presence of bond disorder. This is corroborated by large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a classical bond-disordered XY model on the pyrochlore lattice. The low freezing temperature, together with the very short magnetic correlation length not captured by the simulations, suggesting that quantum effects play a decisive role in NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, Substantial changes have been made

Optical measurements and band structure calculations are reported on 3D Dirac materials. The electronic properties associated with the Dirac cone are identified in the reflectivity spectra of Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi single crystals. In Na$_3$Bi, the plasma edge is found to be strongly temperature dependent due to thermally excited free carriers in the Dirac cone. The thermal behavior provides an estimate of the Fermi level $E_F=25$ meV and the z-axis Fermi velocity $v_z = 0.3 \text{ eV} \AA$ associated with the heavy bismuth Dirac band. At high energies above the $\Gamma$-point Lifshitz gap energy, a frequency and temperature independent $\epsilon_2$ indicative of Dirac cone interband transitions translates into an ab-plane Fermi velocity of $3 \text{ eV} \AA$. The observed number of IR phonons rules out the $\text{P}6_3\text{/mmc}$ space group symmetry but is consistent with the $\text{P}\bar{3}\text{c}1$ candidate symmetry. A plasmaron excitation is discovered near the plasmon energy that persists over a broad range of temperature. The optical signature of the large joint density of states arising from saddle points at $\Gamma$ is strongly suppressed in Na$_3$Bi consistent with band structure calculations that show the dipole transition matrix elements to be weak due to the very small s-orbital character of the Dirac bands. In Cd$_3$As$_2$, a distinctive peak in reflectivity due to the logarithmic divergence in $\epsilon_1$ expected at the onset of Dirac cone interband transitions is identified. The center frequency of the peak shifts with temperature quantitatively consistent with a linear dispersion and a carrier density of $n=1.3\times10^{17}\text{ cm}^{-3}$. The peak width gives a measure of the Fermi velocity anisotropy of $10\%$, indicating a nearly spherical Fermi surface. The lineshape gives an upper bound estimate of 7 meV for the potential fluctuation energy scale., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Recent experimental results have emphasized two aspects of Tb2Ti2O7 which have not been taken into account in previous attempts to construct theories of Tb2Ti2O7: the role of small levels of structural disorder, which appears to control the formation of a long-range ordered state of as yet unknown nature; and the importance of strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom, which results in the hybridization of crystal field excitons and transverse acoustic phonons. In this work we examine the juncture of these two phenomena and show that samples with strongly contrasting behavior vis-a-vis the structural disorder (i.e. with and without the transition to the ordered state), develop identical magnetoelastic coupling. We also show that the comparison between single crystal and powder samples is more complicated than previously thought - the correlation between lattice parameter (as a measure of superstoichiometric Tb$^{3+}$) and the existence of a specific heat peak, as observed in powder samples, does not hold for single crystals., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; resubmitted version

We report a reinvestigation of superconducting Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te at both low and high In doping levels. Analysis of the superconductivity reveals a fundamental change as a function of \textit{x}: the system evolves from a weakly coupled to a strongly coupled superconductor with increasing indium content. Hall Effect measurements further show that the carrier density does not vary linearly with Indium content; indeed at high Indium content, the samples are overall \textit{n}-type, which is contrary to expectations of the standard picture of In$^{1+}$ replacing Sn$^{2+}$ in this material. Density functional theory calculations probing the electronic state of In in SnTe show that it does not act as a trivial hole dopant, but instead forms a distinct, partly filled In 5\textit{s} - Te 5\textit{p} hybridized state centered around E$_F$, very different from what is seen for other nominal hole dopants such as Na, Ag, and vacant Sn sites. We conclude that superconducting In-doped SnTe therefore cannot be considered as a simple hole doped semiconductor., Comment: 12 pages and 7 figures

We employ the chemical fragment formalism to perform a targeted superconductor search in the Nb-Ru-B system, yielding the orthorhombic metal-rich boride NbRuB, which displays BCS-like superconductivity with a Tc = 3.1 K. NbRuB is derived from the chemical fragments Nb3B2 + Ru3B, in which the Nb3B2 fragment contains B-B dimers and the Ru3B fragment contains isolated B atoms. A charge transfer occurs between the fragments. The results indicate that the fragment formalism is a useful chemical tool for the design of new intermetallic superconductors much the same way as the charge reservoir concept has been a useful chemical tool for the design of new copper oxide superconductors.

A topological Dirac semimetal is a novel state of quantum matter which has recently attracted much attention as an apparent 3D version of graphene. In this paper, we report critically important results on the electronic structure of the 3D Dirac semimetal Na3Bi at a surface that reveals its nontrivial groundstate. Our studies, for the first time, reveal that the two 3D Dirac cones go through a topological change in the constant energy contour as a function of the binding energy, featuring a Lifshitz point, which is missing in a strict 3D analog of graphene (in other words Na3Bi is not a true 3D analog of graphene). Our results identify the first example of a band saddle point singularity in 3D Dirac materials. This is in contrast to its 2D analogs such as graphene and the helical Dirac surface states of a topological insulator. Electrons incident from a normal metal onto a superconductor are reflected back as holes - a process called Andreev reflection. In a normal metal where the Fermi energy is much larger than a typical superconducting gap, the reflected hole retraces the path taken by the incident electron. In graphene with ultra low disorder, however, the Fermi energy can be tuned to be smaller than the superconducting gap. In this unusual limit, the holes are expected to be reflected specularly at the superconductor-graphene interface due to the onset of interband Andreev processes, where the effective mass of the reflected holes change sign. Here we present measurements of gate modulated Andreev reflections across the low disorder van der Waals interface formed between graphene and the superconducting NbSe2. We find that the conductance across the graphene-superconductor interface exhibits a characteristic suppression when the Fermi energy is tuned to values smaller than the superconducting gap, a hallmark for the transition between intraband retro- and interband specular- Andreev reflections.

A topological crystalline insulator (TCI) is a new phase of topological matter, which is predicted to exhibit distinct topological quantum phenomena, since space group symmetries replace the role of time-reversal symmetry in the much-studied Z$_2$ topological insulators. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal the momentum space nature of interconnectivity of the Fermi surface pockets leading to a saddle point singularity within the topological surface state alone in the TCI Pb$_{0.7}$Sn$_{0.3}$Se. Moreover, we show that the measured momentum-integrated density of states exhibits pronounced peaks at the saddle point energies, demonstrating the van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the topological surface states, whose surface chemical potential, as we show, can be tuned via surface chemical gating, providing access to the topological correlated physics on the surface. Our experimental data reveal a delicate relationship among lattice constant, band gap and spin-orbit coupling strength associated with the topological phase transition in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se. Furthermore, we explore the robustness of the TCI phase with VHS in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se, which shows a variety of distinct topological phase transitions driven by either thermal instability or broken crystalline symmetry, and thus revealing a rich topological phase diagram connectivity in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se for the first time., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figres

The electronic structure basis of the extremely large magnetoresistance in layered non-magnetic tungsten ditelluride has been investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Hole and electron pockets of approximately the same size were found at the Fermi level, suggesting that carrier compensation should be considered the primary source of the effect. The material exhibits a highly anisotropic, quasi one-dimensional Fermi surface from which the pronounced anisotropy of the magnetoresistance follows. A change in the Fermi surface with temperature was found and a high-density-of-states band that may take over conduction at higher temperatures and cause the observed turn-on behavior of the magnetoresistance in WTe$_2$ was identified.

Detailed neutron scattering measurements on the bond frustrated magnet ZnCr2S4 reveal a rich H-T phase diagram. The field dependence of the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions follows closely that of recently reported structural instabilities, providing further evidence for spin driven Jahn-Teller physics. The incommensurate helical ordered phase below TN1 = 15.5 K exhibits gapless spin wave excitations, whereas a spin wave gap (about 2 meV) opens below TN2 = 8 K as the system undergoes a first-order transition to a commensurate collinear ordered phase. We report the superconducting properties of the K$_{x}$WO$_{3}$ tetragonal tungsten bronze. The highest superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c}=2.1$K) was obtained for K$_{0.38}$WO$_{3}$. $T_{c}$ decreases linearly with increasing K content. Using the measured values for the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and the specific heat $C$, we estimate the orbital critical field $H_{c2}$(0), coherence length $\xi$(0), Debye temperature $\Theta _{D}$ and coupling constant $\lambda _{ep}$. The magnitude of the specific heat jump at $T_{c}$ suggests that the K$_{x}$WO$_{3}$ tetragonal tungsten bronze is a weakly-coupled superconductor. Cr$_2$B displays temperature independent paramagnetism. We induce ferromagnetism by replacing less than $3\,\%$ of the Cr atoms by Fe. By the lowest Fe doping level made, Curie-Weiss behavior is observed; $\Theta_{CW}$ changes from $-20\,$K for $0.5\,\%$ Fe-doped Cr$_2$B to positive values of about 50 K by $5\,\%$ Fe doping. The ferromagnetic T$_C$ is 8 K for $2.5\,\%$ Fe doping and increases linearly to 46 K by $5\,\%$ doping; we infer that a quantum phase transition occurs near the $2.0\,\%$ Fe level. Magnetic fluctuations at the intermediate doping levels are reflected in the linear resistance and an anomalous heat capacity at low temperatures. Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 is the parent compound for a class of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors where superconductivity with transition temperatures up to 30 K can be introduced by partial element substitution. We present a combined high-resolution high-energy x-ray diffraction and elastic neutron scattering study on a Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal. This study reveals the microscopic nature of two distinct and continuous phase transitions to be very similar to other Fe-based high-temperature superconductors: an orthorhombic distortion of the high-temperature tetragonal Fe-As lattice below T_S = 110(2) K followed by stripe-like antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments below T_N = 96(2) K. These findings demonstrate that major features of the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors are very robust against variations in chemical constitution as well as structural imperfection of the layers separating the Fe-As layers from each other and confirms that the Fe-As layers primarily determine the physics in this class of material., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In this letter, we report on an analytical technique for optical investigations of semitransparent samples. By Fourier transforming optical spectra with Fabry-Perot resonances we extract information about sample thickness and its discrete variations. Moreover, this information is used to recover optical spectra devoid of Fabry-Perot fringes, which simplifies optical modelling, and can reveal previously concealed spectral features. To illustrate its use, we apply our technique to a Si wafer as well as six different cleavable layered materials, including topological insulators, thermoelectrics, and magnetic insulators. In the layered materials, we find strong evidence of large step edges and thickness inhomogeneity, and cannot conclusively exclude the presence of voids in the bulk of cleaved samples. This could strongly affect the interpretation of transport and optical data of crystals with topologically protected surfaces states., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Pb$_{0.77}$Sn$_{0.23}$Se is a novel alloy of two promising thermoelectric materials PbSe and SnSe that exhibits a temperature dependent band inversion below 300 K. Recent work has shown that this band inversion also coincides with a trivial to nontrivial topological phase transition. To understand how the properties critical to thermoelectric efficiency are affected by the band inversion, we measured the broadband optical response of Pb$_{0.77}$Sn$_{0.23}$Se as a function of temperature. We find clear optical evidence of the band inversion at $160\pm15$ K, and use the extended Drude model to accurately determine a $T^{3/2}$ dependence of the bulk carrier lifetime, associated with electron-acoustic phonon scattering. Due to the high bulk carrier doping level, no discriminating signatures of the topological surface states are found, although their presence cannot be excluded from our data., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements at low temperature on powder samples of the magnetic pyrochlore oxides Tb2Ti2O7 and Tb2Sn2O7. These two materials possess related, but different ground states, with Tb2Sn2O7 displaying "soft" spin ice order below Tn~0.87 K, while Tb2Ti2O7 enters a hybrid, glassy spin ice state below Tg~0.2 K. Our neutron measurements, performed at T=1.5 K and 30 K, probe the crystal field states associated with the J=6 states of Tb3+ within the appropriate Fd\bar{3}m pyrochlore environment. These crystal field states determine the size and anisotropy of the Tb3+ magnetic moment in each material's ground state, information that is an essential starting point for any description of the low-temperature phase behavior and spin dynamics in Tb2Ti2O7 and Tb2Sn2O7. While these two materials have much in common, the cubic stanate lattice is expanded compared to the cubic titanate lattice. As our measurements show, this translates into a factor of ~2 increase in the crystal field bandwidth of the 2J+1=13 states in Tb2Ti2O7 compared with Tb2Sn2O7. Our results are consistent with previous measurements on crystal field states in Tb2Sn2O7, wherein the ground state doublet corresponds primarily to m_J=|\pm 5> and the first excited state doublet to mJ=|\pm 4>. In contrast, our results on Tb2Ti2O7 differ markedly from earlier studies, showing that the ground state doublet corresponds to a significant mixture of mJ=|\pm 5>, |\mp 4>, and |\pm 2>, while the first excited state doublet corresponds to a mixture of mJ=|\pm 4>, |\mp 5>, and |\pm 1>. We discuss these results in the context of proposed mechanisms for the failure of Tb2Ti2O7 to develop conventional long-range order down to 50 mK., 12 pages, 6 figures. The synthesis, structure, and elementary magnetic and electronic properties are reported for layered compounds of the type Na3-xMIr2O6 and Na3-xM2IrO6, where M is a transition metal from the 3d series (M=Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn). The rhombohedral structures, in space group R-3m, were determined by refinement of neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction data. No clear evidence for long range 2:1 or 1:2 honeycomb-like M/Ir ordering was found in the neutron powder diffraction patterns except in the case of M = Zn, thus in general the compounds are best designated as sodium deficient ��-NaFeO2-type phases with formulas Na1-xM1/3Ir2/3O2 or Na1-xM2/3Ir1/3O2. Synchrotron powder diffraction patterns indicate that several of the compounds likely have honeycomb in-plane metal-iridium ordering with disordered stacking of the layers. All the compounds are sodium deficient under our synthetic conditions and are black and insulating. Weiss constants derived from magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that Na0.62Mn0.61Ir0.39O2, Na0.80Fe2/3Ir1/3O2, Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2, Na0.86Cu1/3Ir2/3O2, and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 display dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. For Na0.90Co1/3Ir2/3O2 the dominant magnetic interactions at low temperature are ferromagnetic while at high temperatures they are antiferromagnetic; there is also a change in the effective moment. Low temperature specific heat measurements (to 2 K) on Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 indicate the presence of a broad magnetic ordering transition. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that iridium is at or close to the 4+ oxidation state in all compounds. 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance measurements comparing Na2IrO3 to Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 provide strong indications that the electron spins are short-range ordered in the latter two materials. This is a revised version of a manuscript that was originally posted here in February of 2014. It has been accepted at the journal Inorganic Chemistry after reviews that included those of two crystallographers who made sure all the t's were crossed and the i's were dotted. The old work (from 1968) that said that Cd3As2 was noncentrosymmetric was mistaken, with the authors of that study making a type of error that in the 1980s became infamous in crystallography. As a result of the increased scrutiny of the issue of centrosymmetricity of the 1980's, there are now much better analysis tools to resolve the issue fully, and its important to understand that not just our crystals are centrosymmetric, even the old guy's crystals were centrosymmetric (and by implication everyone's are). There is no shame in having made that error back in the day and those authors would not find the current centrosymmetric result controversial; their paper is excellent in all other aspects. Symmetry or topology protected Dirac fermion states in two and three dimensions constitute novel quantum systems that exhibit exotic physical phenomena. However, none of the studied spin-orbit materials are suitable for realizing bulk multiplet Dirac states for the exploration of interacting Dirac physics. Here we present experimental evidence, for the first time, that the compound Na3Bi hosts a bulk spin-orbit Dirac multiplet and their interaction or overlap leads to a Lifshitz transition in momentum space - a condition for realizing interactions involving Dirac states. By carefully preparing the samples at a non-natural-cleavage (100) crystalline surface, we uncover many novel electronic and spin properties in Na3Bi by utilizing high resolution angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. We observe two bulk 3D Dirac nodes that locate on the opposite sides of the bulk zone center point $\Gamma$, which exhibit a Fermi surface Lifshitz transition and a saddle point singularity. Furthermore, our data shows evidence for the possible existence of theoretically predicted weak 2D nontrivial spin-orbit surface state with helical spin polarization that are nestled between the two bulk Dirac cones, consistent with the theoretically calculated (100) surface-arc-modes. Our main experimental observation of a rich multiplet of Dirac structure and the Lifshitz transition opens the door for inducing electronic instabilities and correlated physical phenomena in Na3Bi, and paves the way for the engineering of novel topological states using Na3Bi predicted in recent theory., Comment: 23 pages, 5 Figures

We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 Figures. We describe the crystal growth, crystal structure, and basic electrical properties of Bi2Te1.6S1.4, which incorporates both S and Te in its Tetradymite quintuple layers in the motif -[Te0.8S0.2]-Bi-S-Bi-[Te0.8S0.2]-. This material differs from other Tetradymites studied as topological insulators due to the increased ionic character that arises from its significant S content. Bi2Te1.6S1.4 forms high quality crystals from the melt and is the S-rich limit of the ternary Bi-Te-S {\gamma}-Tetradymite phase at the melting point. The native material is n-type with a low resistivity; Sb substitution, with adjustment of the Te to S ratio, results in a crossover to p-type and resistive behavior at low temperatures. Angle resolved photoemission study shows that topological surface states are present, with the Dirac point more exposed than it is in Bi2Te3 and similar to that seen in Bi2Te2Se. Single crystal structure determination indicates that the S in the outer chalcogen layers is closer to the Bi than the Te, and therefore that the layers supporting the surface states are corrugated on the atomic scale., Comment: To be published in Physical Review B Rapid Communications 16 douuble spaced pages. 4 figures 1 table

We report spin- and angle-resolved photoemission studies of a topological insulator from the infinitely adaptive series between elemental Bi and Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The compound, based on Bi$_4$Se$_3$, is a 1:1 natural superlattice of alternating Bi$_2$ layers and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers; the inclusion of S allows the growth of large crystals, with the formula Bi$_4$Se$_{2.6}$S$_{0.4}$. The crystals cleave along the interfaces between the Bi$_2$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers, with the surfaces obtained having alternating Bi or Se termination. The resulting terraces, observed by photoemission electron microscopy, create avenues suitable for the study of one-dimensional topological physics. The electronic structure, determined by spin- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy, shows the existence of a surface state that forms a large, hexagonally shaped Fermi surface around the $\Gamma$ point of the surface Brillouin zone, with the spin structure indicating that this material is a topological insulator., Comment: published version, 5 pages, 4 figures

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report electronic structure for representative members of ternary topological insulators. We show that several members of this family, such as Bi2Se2Te, Bi2Te2Se, and GeBi2Te4, exhibit a singly degenerate Dirac-like surface state, while Bi2Se2S is a fully gapped insulator with no measurable surface state. One of these compounds, Bi2Se2Te, shows tunable surface state dispersion upon its electronic alloying with Sb (SbxBi2-xSe2Te series). Other members of the ternary family such as GeBi2Te4 and BiTe1.5S1.5 show an in-gap surface Dirac point, the former of which has been predicted to show nonzero weak topological invariants such as (1;111); thus belonging to a different topological class than BiTe1.5S1.5. The measured band structure presented here will be a valuable guide for interpreting transport, thermoelectric, and thermopower measurements on these compounds. We have measured the temperature dependence of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in a Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$]$_{5}$ (x=0.097) single crystal using a low-temperature magnetic force microscope (MFM). We obtain $\lambda_{ab}$(0)$\approx$1000 nm via extrapolating the data to $T = 0$. This large $\lambda$ and pronounced anisotropy in this system are responsible for large thermal fluctuations and the presence of a liquid vortex phase in this low-temperature superconductor with critical temperature of 11 K, consistent with the interpretation of the electrical transport data. The superconducting parameters obtained from $\lambda$ and coherence length $\xi$ place this compound in the extreme type \MakeUppercase{\romannumeral 2} regime. Meissner responses (via MFM) at different locations across the sample are similar to each other, indicating good homogeneity of the superconducting state on a sub-micron scale.

Single crystals of (Ca1-xLax)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (x = 0 to 0.182) superconductors have been grown and characterized by X-ray, microprobe, transport and thermodynamic measurements. Features in the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and two kinks in the derivative of the electrical resistivity around 100 K in the x = 0 compound support the existence of decoupled structural and magnetic phase transitions. With La doping, the structural/magnetic phase transitions are suppressed and a half-dome of superconductivity with a maximal Tc around 26 K is observed in the temperature-concentration phase diagram., Comment: The affiliations are corrected. We report the observation of prominent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a Topological Insulator, Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, with large bulk resistivity (6 $��$cm at 4 K). By fitting the SdH oscillations, we infer a large metallicity parameter $k_F\ell$ = 41, with a surface mobility ($��_s\sim$ 2,800 cm$^2$/Vs) much larger than the bulk mobility ($��_b\sim$ 50 cm$^2$/Vs). The plot of the index fields $B_��$ vs. filling factor $��$ shows a $\frac12$-shift, consistent with massless, Dirac states. We report high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Spin-ARPES) measurements on the parent compound Sb of the first discovered 3D topological insulator Bi{1-x}Sb{x} [D. Hsieh et al., Nature 452, 970 (2008) Submitted 2007]. By modulating the incident photon energy, we are able to map both the bulk and (111) surface band structure, from which we directly demonstrate that the surface bands are spin polarized by the spin-orbit interaction and connect the bulk valence and conduction bands in a topologically non-trivial way. A unique asymmetric Dirac surface state gives rise to a $k$-splitting of its spin polarized electronic channels. These results complement our previously published works on this materials class and re-confirm our discovery of first bulk (3D) topological insulator - topological order in bulk solids. ��-SrCr2O4 has a triangular planar lattice of d3 Cr3+ made from edge sharing CrO6 octahedra; the plane shows a very small orthorhombic distortion from hexagonal symmetry. With a Weiss temperature of -596 K and a three-dimensional magnetic ordering temperature of 43 K, the magnetic system is quasi two-dimensional and frustrated. Neutron powder diffraction shows that the ordered state is an incommensurate helical magnet, with an in-plane propagation vector of k = (0,0.3217(8),0). Temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction characterization of the structure shows an increase in the inter-plane spacing on cooling below 100 K and an inflection in the cell parameters at the magnetic ordering temperature. These anomalies indicate the presence of a moderate degree of magneto-structural coupling., 19 pages, 6 figures

WO3-xFx (x < 0.45) perovskite-like oxyfluorides were prepared by a chemically reducing fluorination route using the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon). The symmetry of the crystal structures of WO3-xFx changes from monoclinic to tetragonal to cubic as the fluorine content increases. Fluorine doping changes insulating WO3 to a metallic conductor, and superconductivity (Tc = 0.4 K) was discovered in the samples with fluorine contents of 0.41 < x < 0.45. This easy fluorination method may be applicable to other systems and presents an opportunity for finding new oxyfluoride superconductors., 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. To be published in Phys Rev B

The development of spin-based applications of topological insulators requires the knowledge and understanding of spin texture configuration maps as they change via gating in the vicinity of an isolated Dirac node. An isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node, however, does not exist in Bi2Te3. While the isolation of surface states via transport channels has been promisingly achieved in Bi2Te3, it is not known how spin textures modulate while gating the surface. Another drawback of Bi2Te3 is that it features multiple band crossings while chemical potential is placed near the Dirac node (at least 3 not one as in Bi2Se3 and many other topological insulators) and its buried Dirac point is not experimentally accessible for the next generation of experiments which require tuning the chemical potential near an isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node. Here, we image the spin texture of Bi2Te3 and suggest a simple modification to realize a much sought out isolated Dirac node regime critical for almost all potential applications (of topological nature) of Bi2Te3. Finally, we demonstrate carrier control in magnetically and nonmagnetically doped Bi2Te3 essential for realizing giant magneto-optical effects and dissipationless spin current devices involving a Bi2Te3-based platform., Comment: 5 pages, 4 Figures

We report that small amounts of metal atom non-stoichiometry are possible in the ZnCr2O4 and MgCr2O4 spinels. The non-stoichiometry, though less than 2%, significantly impacts TN and the nature of the magnetic correlations above TN. The Zn1+xCr2-xO4 spinel is particularly sensitive. While stoichiometric ZnCr2O4 displays antiferromagnetic short range correlations in the susceptibility above TN, ferromagnetic correlations are observed in non-stoichiometric, hole doped Zn1+xCr2-xO4. The Mg1+xCr2-xO4 spinels are less profoundly affected by non-stoichiometry, though significant changes are also observed. We contrast the magnetic properties of Zn1+xCr2-xO4 and Mg1+xCr2-xO4 (x=0, 0.02, 0.04) with those of materials with the equivalent amounts of isovalent non-magnetic Ga3+ substituted on the Cr3+ site to separate the effects of static site disorder and hole doping., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, To be published in Physical Review B

The magnetic structure of multiferroic Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ has been investigated using non-resonant X-ray magnetic scattering. Incident circularly polarized X-rays combined with full polarization analysis of the scattered beam is shown to yield high sensitivity to the components of the cycloidal magnetic order, including their relative phases. New information on the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase is obtained, where it is found that the magnetic moments on the "cross-tie" sites are quenched relative to those on the "spine" sites. This implies that the onset of ferroelectricity is associated mainly with spine site magnetic order. We also demonstrate that our technique enables the imaging of multiferroic domains through polarization enhanced topography. This approach is used to image the domains as the sample is cycled by an electric field through its hysteresis loop, revealing the gradual switching of domains without nucleation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We report a transport study of exfoliated few monolayer crystals of topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ in an electric field effect (EFE) geometry. By doping the bulk crystals with Ca, we are able to fabricate devices with sufficiently low bulk carrier density to change the sign of the Hall density with the gate voltage $V_g$. We find that the temperature $T$ and magnetic field dependent transport properties in the vicinity of this $V_g$ can be explained by a bulk channel with activation gap of approximately 50 meV and a relatively high mobility metallic channel that dominates at low $T$. The conductance (approximately 2 $\times$ 7$e^2/h$), weak anti-localization, and metallic resistance-temperature profile of the latter lead us to identify it with the protected surface state. The relative smallness of the observed gap implies limitations for EFE topological insulator devices at room temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Topological insulators (TI) realize a novel state of quantum matter that are distinguished by topological invariants of bulk band structure rather than spontaneously broken symmetries. A number of exotic quantum phenomena have been predicted to exist in multiply-connected geometries which require an enormous amount of materials flexibility. We have extended our previous search for TI materials from binary (Bi2X3 series) to the thermoelectric ternary compounds. We discover that the distorted LuPtSb is the first ternary compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state. We also show that the half-Heusler LuPtSb-type series is a natural platform that hosts a range of candidate compounds, alloys and artificial heterostructures (quantum-wells). We also discovered several different paradigms of trivial and non-trivial topological ordering in this class, including a metallic nontrivial topological state in YAuPb. Both the theoretical and experimental discovery of single-Dirac-cone topological-insulator-class was reported at arXiv:0812.2078 (2008) [Y. Xia et.al., Nature Physics 5, 398-402 (2009) http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/v5/n6/full/nphys1294.html]. Here we report the first observation of Spin-Momentum Helical Locking and Spin-Vortex structures in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, demonstrate the existence of Topological-Order at 300K and report a material realization of topological-transport-regime for helical Dirac fermions. Our results reveal a one-to-one spin-momentum locked Dirac structure in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 that is nearly 100% spin-polarized, which exhibits a tunable topological fermion density in the vicinity of the Kramers' point and can be driven to the long-sought topological-transport-regime. The observed topological nodal Dirac ground state is found to be protected even up to room temperature (300 K). Our results pave the way for future transport based studies of topological insulators, and possible room temperature applications of protected spin-polarized edge channels we observe with spin-ARPES in spintronic technology. A topological insulator is characterized by spin-momentum locking on its boundary. The spin momentum locking on the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator leads to the existence of a non-trivial Berry's phase which leads to exotic transport phenomena on topological surfaces. Using spin-sensitive probes (Mott polarimetry), we observe the spin-momentum coupling and uncover the chiral nature of surface electrons in TlBiSe2. We demonstrate that the surface electrons in TlBiSe2 collectively carry a quantum Berry's phase of $\pi$ and a definite chirality ($\eta$ = -1, left-handed) associated with its spin-texture or vortex-structure on the Fermi surface on both the top and the bottom surfaces. Our experimental results for the first time not only prove the existence of Z2 topological-order in the bulk but also reveal the existence of helical quasiparticle modes on the topological surface.
