In a dense cloud of massive fermions interacting by exchange of a light scalar field, the effective mass of the fermion can become negligibly small. As the cloud expands, the effective mass and the total energy density eventually increase with decreasing density. In this regime, the pressure-density relation can approximate that required for dark energy. We apply this phenomenon to the expansion of the Universe with a very light scalar field and infer relations between the parameters available and cosmological observations. We construct a complete five dimensional Quark-Lepton symmetric model, with all fields propagating in the bulk. The extra dimension forms an $S^1/Z_2\times Z_2'$ orbifold with the zero mode fermions corresponding to standard model quarks localised at one fixed point. Zero modes corresponding to left(right)-chiral leptons are localised at (near) the other fixed point. This localisation pattern is motivated by the symmetries of the model. Shifting the right-handed neutrinos and charged leptons slightly from the fixed point provides a new mechanism for understanding the absence of relations of the type $m_e=m_u$ or $m_e=m_d$ in Quark-Lepton symmetric models. Flavour changing neutral currents resulting from Kaluza Klein gluon exchange, which typically arise in the quark sector of split fermion models, are suppressed due to the localisation of quarks at one point. The separation of quarks and leptons in the compact extra dimension also acts to suppress the proton decay rate. This permits the extra dimension to be much larger than that obtained in a previous construct, with the bound $1/R\gtrsim30$ TeV obtained., Comment: 12 pages, references added to match published version

In dense neutrino systems, such as found in the early Universe, or near a supernova core, neutrino flavor evolution is affected by coherent neutrino-neutrino scattering. It has been recently suggested that many-particle quantum entanglement effects may play an essential role in these systems, potentially invalidating the traditional description in terms of a set of single-particle evolution equations. We model the neutrino system by a system of interacting spins, following an earlier work which showed that such a spin system can in some cases be solved exactly. We extend this work by constructing an exact analytical solution to a more general spin system, including initial states with asymmetric spin distribution and, moreover, not necessarily aligned along the same axis. Our solution exhibits a rich set of behaviors, including coherent oscillations and dephasing and a transition from the classical to quantum regimes. We argue that the classical evolution of the spin system captures the entire coherent behavior of the neutrino system, while the quantum effects in the spin system capture some, but not all, of the neutrino incoherent evolution. By comparing the spin and neutrino systems, we find no evidence for the violation of the accepted one-body description, though the argument involves some subtleties not appreciated before. Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz (AS) have shown that proton stability need not originate from symmetries in a high energy theory. Instead the proton decay rate is suppressed if quarks and leptons are spatially separated in a compact extra dimension. This separation may be achieved by coupling five dimensional fermions to a bulk scalar field with a non-trivial vacuum profile and requires relationships between the associated quark and lepton Yukawa couplings. We hypothesise that these relationships are the manifestation of an underlying symmetry. We further show that the AS proposal may suggest that proton stability \emph{is} the result of an underlying symmetry, though not necessarily the traditional baryon number symmetry., Comment: 4 pages, references added to match published version

We study the Berry phase in neutrino oscillations for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. In order to have a Berry phase, the neutrino oscillations must occur in a varying medium, the neutrino-background interactions must depend on at least two independent densities, and also there must be CP violation if the neutrino interactions with matter are mediated only by the standard model W and Z boson exchanges which implies that there must be at least three generations of neutrinos. The CP violating Majorana phases do not play a role in generating a Berry phase. We show that a natural way to satisfy the conditions for the generation of a Berry phase is to have sterile neutrinos with active-sterile neutrino mixing, in which case at least two active and one sterile neutrinos are required. If the sterile neutrino mass matrix in an otherwise conventional seesaw model has a rank less than the number of flavors, it is possible to produce pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. In a two-flavor, sterile rank 1 case, we demonstrate analytic conditions for large active mixing induced by the existence of (and coupling to) the sterile neutrino components. For the three-flavor, rank 1 case, ``3+2'' scenarios with large mixing also devolve naturally as we show by numerical examples. We observe that, in this approach, small mass differences can develop naturally without any requirement that masses themselves are small. The modifications induced in the standard weak-lensing formula if Newtonian gravity differs from inverse square law at large distances are studied. The possibility of putting bounds on the mass of gravitons from lensing data is explored. We demonstrate that a direct approach to improving Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory is possible. Our approach is to correct errors in the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian by incorporating additional gauge invariant terms. The coefficients of these terms are chosen so that the order $a^2$ classical errors vanish. We consider the possibility that neutrinos are coupled very weakly to an extremely light scalar boson. We first analyze the simple problem of one generation of neutrino and show that, for ranges of parameters that are allowed by existing data, such a system can have serious consequences for the evolution of stars and could impact precision laboratory measurements. We discuss the extension to more generations and show that the general conclusion remains viable. It has been shown that CP violating electron-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon interactions can induce atomic electric dipole moments and are therefore constrained from experimental data. We show that using the experimental upper bounds on neutron and electron electric dipole moments, one can also obtain constraints, in some cases better ones, on these interactions. In addition stringent constraints can also be obtained for muon-quark and tauon-quark four-fermion CP violating interactions, which cannot be constrained from atomic electric dipole moment experiments., Comment: ps-file, 12pages

We show that it is possible to obtain self-consistent and physically acceptable relativistic classical equations of motion for a point-like spin-half particle possessing an electric charge and a magnetic dipole moment, directly from a manifestly covariant Lagrangian, if the classical degrees of freedom are appropriately chosen. It is shown that the equations obtained encompass the well-tested Lorentz force and Thomas--Bargmann--Michel--Telegdi spin equations, as well as providing a definite specification of the classical _magnetic_dipole_ force_, whose exact form has been the subject of recent debate. In this paper we calculate the one loop contributions to the CP violating three gauge boson couplings in two-Higgs doublet and Left--Right symmetric models. In the two-Higgs doublet model only a P conserving and CP violating coupling is generated, and it can be large as $10^{-3}$. In the Left--Right symmetric model both P conserving and violating couplings are generated.
