This paper shows how the Xtensa architecture can be attacked with Return-Oriented-Programming (ROP). The presented techniques include possibilities for both supported Application Binary Interfaces (ABIs). Especially for the windowed ABI a powerful mechanism is presented that not only allows to jump to gadgets but also to manipulate registers without relying on specific gadgets. This paper purely focuses on how the properties of the architecture itself can be exploited to chain gadgets and not on specific attacks or a gadget catalog.

Facial features are defined as the local relationships that exist amongst the pixels of a facial image. Hand-crafted descriptors identify the relationships of the pixels in the local neighbourhood defined by the kernel. Kernel is a two dimensional matrix which is moved across the facial image. Distinctive information captured by the kernel with limited number of pixel achieves satisfactory recognition and retrieval accuracies on facial images taken under constrained environment (controlled variations in light, pose, expressions, and background). To achieve similar accuracies under unconstrained environment local neighbourhood has to be increased, in order to encode more pixels. Increasing local neighbourhood also increases the feature length of the descriptor. In this paper we propose a hand-crafted descriptor namely Centre Symmetric Quadruple Pattern (CSQP), which is structurally symmetric and encodes the facial asymmetry in quadruple space. The proposed descriptor efficiently encodes larger neighbourhood with optimal number of binary bits. It has been shown using average entropy, computed over feature images encoded with the proposed descriptor, that the CSQP captures more meaningful information as compared to state of the art descriptors. The retrieval and recognition accuracies of the proposed descriptor has been compared with state of the art hand-crafted descriptors (CSLBP, CSLTP, LDP, LBP, SLBP and LDGP) on bench mark databases namely; LFW, Colour-FERET, and CASIA-face-v5. The fraction of stars which are in binaries or triples at the time of stellar death and the fraction of these systems which survive the supernova (SN) explosion are crucial constraints for evolution models and predictions for gravitational wave source populations. These fractions are also subject to direct observational determination. Here we search 10 supernova remnants (SNR) containing compact objects with proper motions for unbound binaries or triples using Gaia EDR3 and new statistical methods and tests for false positives. We confirm the one known example of an unbound binary, HD 37424 in G180.0-01.7, and find no other examples. Combining this with our previous searches for bound and unbound binaries, and assuming no bias in favor of finding interacting binaries, we find that 72.0% (52.2%-86.4%, 90% confidence) of SN producing neutron stars are not binaries at the time of explosion, 13.9% (5.4%-27.2%) produce bound binaries and 12.5% (2.8%-31.3%) produce unbound binaries. With a strong bias in favor of finding interacting binaries, the medians shift to 76.0% were not binaries at death, 9.5% leave bound and 13.2% leave unbound binaries. Of explosions that do not leave binaries, 5Msun stars, although the mass limits for individual systems are significantly stronger. At birth, the progenitor of PSR J0538+2817 was probably a 13-19Msun star, and at the time of explosion it was probably a Roche limited, partially stripped star transferring mass to HD 37424 and then producing a Type IIL or IIb supernova., submitted to MNRAS

The H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey has detected very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from 78 sources in the Milky Way. These sources belong to different object classes (pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants or binary systems) and some of these sources remain unidentified. The gamma-ray emission of these objects may be of leptonic or hadronic origin and gamma-ray observations alone cannot distinguish between these two scenarios. The detection of neutrino emission would provide evidence for a hadronic scenario in these objects. Based on the observed gamma-ray spectra we predict the neutrino emission of these sources under the hypothesis that the emission is solely of hadronic origin. This prediction relies entirely on observation and is independent of the source class, the distance or the ambient target material. We use these predictions to create an empirical model for the neutrino emission of the Milky Way. A zero-dimensional (volume-averaged) and a pseudo-one-dimensional plug-flow (spatially resolved) model are developed to investigate atmospheric-pressure plasma jets operated with He, He/O2, He/N2 and He/N2/O2 mixtures. The models are coupled with the Boltzmann equation under the two-term approximation to self-consistently calculate the electron energy distribution function. An agreement is obtained between the zero-dimensional model calculations and the spatially averaged values of the plug-flow simulation results. The zero-dimensional model calculations are verified against spatially resolved simulation results and validated against a wide variety of measurement data from the literature. The nitric oxide (NO) concentration is thoroughly characterized for a variation of the gas mixture ratio, helium flow rate and absorbed power. An ‘effective’ and a hypothetical larger rate coefficient value for the reactive quenching N 2 ( A 3 Σ , B 3 Π ) + O ( P 3 ) → N O + N ( D 2 ) are used to estimate the role of the species N2(A3Σ, B3Π; v > 0) and multiple higher N2 electronically excited states instead of only N2(A3Σ, B3Π; v = 0) in this quenching. The NO concentration measurements at low power are better and almost identically captured by the simulations using the ‘effective’ and hypothetical values, respectively. Furthermore, the O ( P 3 ) density measurements under the same operation conditions are also better predicted by the simulations adopting these values. It is found that the contribution of the vibrationally excited nitrogen molecules N2(v ⩾ 13) to the net NO formation rate gains more significance at higher power. The vibrational distribution functions (VDFs) of molecular oxygen O2(v < 41) and nitrogen N2(v < 58) are investigated regarding their formation mechanisms and their responses to the variation of operation parameters. It is observed that the N2 VDF shows a stronger response than the O2 VDF. The sensitivity of the simulation results with respect to a variation of the VDF resolutions, wall reaction probabilities and synthetic air impurity levels is presented. The simulated plasma properties are sensitive to the variation, especially for a feed gas mixture containing nitrogen. The plug-flow model is validated against one-dimensional experimental data in the gas flow direction, and it is only used in case an analysis of the spatially resolved plasma properties inside the jet chamber is of interest. The increasing NO spatial concentration in the gas flow direction is saturated at a relatively high power. A stationary O2 VDF is obtained along the direction of the mass flow, while a continuously growing N2 VDF is observed until the jet nozzle.

Aims: LS 5039 is an enigmatic high-mass gamma-ray binary which hosts a powerful O6.5V companion, but the nature of the compact object is still to be established using multi-wavelength observations. Methods: We analyzed phase-resolved multi-instrument spectra of nonthermal emission from LS 5039 in order to produce reliable spectral models, which can be further employed to select between various scenarios and theoretical models of the binary. Results: The combined phase-resolved hard X-ray and MeV-range gamma-ray spectra obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, and COMPTEL indicate a meaningful spectral hardening above 50~keV. The spectral break observed in both major phases of the binary may indicate the presence of a hardening in the spectrum of accelerated leptons which could originate from the interaction of wind from the O6.5V companion star with the relativistic outflow from a yet unidentified compact object., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A 13 July 2021, 7 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Binary sequences are widely used in various practical fields, such as telecommunications, radar technology, navigation, cryptography, measurement sciences, biology or industry. In this paper, a method to generate long binary sequences (LBS) with low peak sidelobe level (PSL) value is proposed. Having an LBS with length $n$, both the time and memory complexities of the proposed algorithm are $\mathcal{O}(n)$. During our experiments, we repeatedly reach better PSL values than the currently known state of art constructions, such as Legendre sequences, with or without rotations, Rudin-Shapiro sequences or m-sequences, with or without rotations, by always reaching a record-breaking PSL values strictly less than $\sqrt{n}$. Furthermore, the efficiency and simplicity of the proposed method are particularly beneficial to the lightweightness of the implementation, which allowed us to reach record-breaking PSL values for less than a second.

Direct detection of gravitational waves from several compact binary coalescences has ushered in a new era of astronomy. It has opened up the possibility of detecting ultralight bosons, predicted by extensions of the Standard Model, from their gravitational signatures. This is of particular interest as some of these hypothetical particles could be components of dark matter that are expected to interact very weakly with Standard Model particles, if at all, but they would gravitate as usual. Ultralight bosons can trigger superradiant instabilities of rotating black holes and form bosonic clouds that would emit gravitational waves. We present an extensive comparison between the statistical properties of non-hierarchical three-body systems and the corresponding three-body theoretical predictions. We perform and analyze 1 million realizations for each different initial condition considering equal and unequal mass three-body systems to provide high accuracy statistics. We measure 4 quantities characterizing the statistical distribution of ergodic disintegrations: escape probability of each body, the characteristic exponent for escapes by a narrow margin, predicted absorptivity as a function of binary energy and binary angular momentum, and, finally, the lifetime distribution. The escape probabilities are shown to be in agreement down to the 1% level with the emissivity-blind, flux-based theoretical prediction. This represents a leap in accuracy compared to previous three-body statistical theories. The characteristic exponent at the threshold for marginally unbound escapes is an emissivity-independent flux-based prediction, and the measured values are found to agree well with the prediction. We interpret both tests as strong evidence for the flux-based three-body statistical formalism. Classifying catalog objects as stars, galaxies, or AGN is a crucial part of any statistical study of galaxies. We describe our pipeline for binary (star/galaxy) and multiclass (star/galaxy/Type I AGN/Type II AGN) classification developed for the very deep CLAUDS+HSC-SSP $u^*grizy$ dataset. Our method uses the XGBoost implementation of Gradient Boosted Trees (GBT) to train ensembles of models which take photometry, colours, maximum surface brightnesses, and effective radii from all available bands as input, and output the probability that an object belongs to each of the classes under consideration. The main aim of this study is the assessment and discussion of a model for hand-written Arabic through segmentation. The framework is proposed based on three steps: pre-processing, segmentation, and evaluation. In the pre-processing step, morphological operators are applied for Connecting Gaps (CGs) in written words. Gaps happen when pen lifting-off during writing, scanning documents, or while converting images to binary type. In the segmentation step, first removed the small diacritics then bounded a connected component to segment offline words. Huge data was utilized in the proposed model for applying a variety of handwriting styles so that to be more compatible with real-life applications. Consequently, on the automatic evaluation stage, selected randomly 1,131 images from the IESK-ArDB database, and then segmented into sub-words. After small gaps been connected, the model performance evaluation had been reached 88% against the standard ground truth of the database. A matroid is uniform if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to $U_{1,1}\oplus U_{0,1}$ and is paving if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to $U_{2,2}\oplus U_{0,1}$. This paper considers, more generally, when a matroid $M$ has no $U_{k,k}\oplus U_{0,\ell}$-minor for a fixed pair of positive integers $(k,\ell)$. Calling such a matroid $(k,\ell)$-uniform, it is shown that this is equivalent to the condition that every rank-$(r(M)-k)$ flat of $M$ has nullity less than $\ell$. Generalising a result of Rajpal, we prove that for any pair $(k,\ell)$ of positive integers and prime power $q$, only finitely many simple cosimple $GF(q)$-representable matroids are \kl-uniform. Consequently, if Rota's Conjecture holds, then for every prime power $q$, there exists a pair $(k_q,\ell_q)$ of positive integers such that every excluded minor of $GF(q)$-representability is $(k_q,\ell_q)$-uniform. We also determine all binary $(2,2)$-uniform matroids and show the maximally $3$-connected members to be $Z_5\backslash t, AG(4,2), AG(4,2)^*$ and a particular self-dual matroid $P_{10}$. Borromean ring refers to a peculiar structure where three rings are linked together while any two of them are unlinked. Here we propose the realization of its quantum mechanical analog in a many-body system of three-component ultracold bosons. Namely, we identify the {\it Borromean droplet}, where only the ternary bosons can form a self-bound droplet while any binary subsystems cannot. Its formation is facilitated by an additional attractive force induced by the density fluctuation of a third component, which enlarges the mean-field collapse region in comparison to the binary case and renders the formation of Borromean droplet after incorporating the repulsive force from quantum fluctuations. Outside the Borromean regime, the competition between ternary and binary droplets leads to an interesting phenomenon of droplet phase separation, manifested by double plateaus in the density profile. We further show that the transition between different droplets and gas phase can be conveniently tuned by boson numbers and interaction strengths. Aims. We present pyUPMASK, an unsupervised clustering method for stellar clusters that builds upon the original UPMASK package. The general approach of this method makes it plausible to be applied to analyses that deal with binary classes of any kind as long as the fundamental hypotheses are met. The code is written entirely in Python and is made available through a public repository. Methods. The core of the algorithm follows the method developed in UPMASK but introduces several key enhancements. These enhancements not only make pyUPMASK more general, they also improve its performance considerably. Results. We thoroughly tested the performance of pyUPMASK on 600 synthetic clusters affected by varying degrees of contamination by field stars. To assess the performance, we employed six different statistical metrics that measure the accuracy of probabilistic classification. Conclusions. Our results show that pyUPMASK is better performant than UPMASK for every statistical performance metric, while still managing to be many times faster. Fil: Pera, María Sol. We present the first BVR photometry, period variation and photometric light curve analysis of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries, V1321 Cyg and CR Tau. Observations were carried out from November 2017 to January 2020 at the observatory of Uzhhorod National University. Period variations were studied using all available early published as well as our minima times. We used the newly developed ELISa code for the light curve analysis and determination of photometric parameters for both systems. We found that V1321 Cyg is a close detached eclipsing system with a low photometric mass ratio of q = 0.28 which suggests that the binary is a post-mass transfer system. No significant period changes in this system are detected. CR Tau is, on the other hand, a semi-detached system where the secondary component almost fills its Roche lobe. We detected a long-term period increase at a rate of 1.49 × 10−7 d yr−1, which supports mass transfer from the lower mass secondary component to the more massive primary.

The detection rate for compact binary mergers has grown as the sensitivity of the global network of ground based gravitational wave detectors has improved, now reaching the stage where robust automation of the analyses is essential. Automated low-latency algorithms have been developed that send out alerts when candidate signals are detected. The alerts include sky maps to facilitate electromagnetic follow up observations, along with probabilities that the system might contain a neutron star, and hence be more likely to generate an electromagnetic counterpart. Data quality issues, such as loud noise transients (glitches), can adversely affect the low-latency algorithms, causing false alarms and throwing off parameter estimation. Here a new analysis method is presented that is robust against glitches, and capable of producing fully Bayesian parameter inference, including sky maps and mass estimates, in a matter of minutes. Key elements of the method are wavelet-based de-noising, penalized maximization of the likelihood during the initial search, rapid sky localization using pre-computed inner products, and heterodyned likelihoods for full Bayesian inference., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The first version of the Binary Population Synthesizer (BiPoS1) is made publicly available. It allows to efficiently calculate binary distribution functions after the dynamical processing of a realistic population of binary stars during the first few Myr in the hosting embedded star cluster. Instead of time-consuming N-body simulations, BiPoS1 uses a stellar dynamical operator which determines the fraction of surviving binaries depending on the binding energy of the binaries. The stellar dynamical operator depends on the initial star cluster density as well as the time until the residual gas of the star cluster is expelled. BiPoS1 has also a galactic-field mode, in order to synthesize the stellar population of a whole galaxy. At the time of gas expulsion, the dynamical processing of the binary population is assumed to efficiently end due to the subsequent expansion of the star cluster. N-ary relational knowledge bases (KBs) represent knowledge with binary and beyond-binary relational facts. Especially, in an n-ary relational fact, the involved entities play different roles, e.g., the ternary relation PlayCharacterIn consists of three roles, ACTOR, CHARACTER and MOVIE. However, existing approaches are often directly extended from binary relational KBs, i.e., knowledge graphs, while missing the important semantic property of role. Therefore, we start from the role level, and propose a Role-Aware Modeling, RAM for short, for facts in n-ary relational KBs. RAM explores a latent space that contains basis vectors, and represents roles by linear combinations of these vectors. This way encourages semantically related roles to have close representations. RAM further introduces a pattern matrix that captures the compatibility between the role and all involved entities. To this end, it presents a multilinear scoring function to measure the plausibility of a fact composed by certain roles and entities. We show that RAM achieves both theoretical full expressiveness and computation efficiency, which also provides an elegant generalization for approaches in binary relational KBs. Cygnus X-1 is a well-studied persistent black hole X-ray binary. Recently, the three parameters needed to estimate the black hole spin of this system, namely the black hole mass $M$, the orbital inclination $i$ and the source distance $D$, have been updated. In this work we redetermine the spin parameter using the continuum-fitting technique for those updated parameter values. Based on the assumption that the spin axis of the black hole is aligned with the orbital plane, we fit the thermal disk component to a fully relativistic thin accretion disk model. The error in the spin estimate arising from the combined observational uncertainties is obtained via Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We demonstrate that, without considering the counteracting torque effect, the new spin parameter is constrained to be a$_* > 0.9985$ (3$\sigma$), which confirms that the spin of the black hole in Cygnus X-1 is extreme., Comment: ApJ published

Context: Many if not most planetary nebulae (PNe) are now thought to be the outcome of binary evolutionary scenarios. However only a few percent of PNe in the Milky Way are known to host binary systems. The high precision repeated observing and long time baseline of Gaia make it well suited to detect new close binaries through photometric variability. Aims: We aim to find new close binary central stars of PNe (CSPNe) using data from the Gaia mission, building towards a statistically significant sample of post common envelope, close binary CSPNe. Methods: As the vast majority of Gaia sources do not have published epoch photometry, we use the uncertainty in the mean photometry as a proxy for determining the variability of our CSPN sample in the second Gaia data release. We derive a quantity that expresses the significance of the variability, and consider what is necessary to build a clean sample of genuine variable sources. Results: Our selection recovers a large fraction of the known close binary CSPN population, while other CSPNe lying in the same region of the parameter space likely represent low-hanging fruit for ground-based confirmatory followup observations. A quantum stabilizer code over GF$(q)$ corresponds to a classical additive code over GF$(q^2)$ that is self-orthogonal with respect to a symplectic inner product. We study the decoding of quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over binary finite fields GF$(q=2^l)$ by the sum-product algorithm, also known as belief propagation (BP). Conventionally, a message in a nonbinary BP for quantum codes over GF$(2^l)$ represents a probability vector over GF$(2^{2l})$, inducing high decoding complexity. In this paper, we explore the property of the symplectic inner product and show that scalar messages suffice for BP decoding of nonbinary quantum codes, rather than vector messages necessary for the conventional BP. Consequently, we propose a BP decoding algorithm for quantum codes over GF$(2^l)$ by passing scalar messages so that it has low computation complexity. The algorithm is specified in log domain by using log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) of the channel statistics to have a low implementation cost. Moreover, techniques such as message normalization or offset can be naturally applied in this algorithm to mitigate the effects of short cycles to improve BP performance. This is important for nonbinary quantum codes since they may have more short cycles compared to binary quantum codes. Several computer simulations are provided to demonstrate these advantages. Classifying the morphologies of galaxies is an important step in understanding their physical properties and evolutionary histories. The advent of large-scale surveys has hastened the need to develop techniques for automated morphological classification. We train and test several convolutional neural network architectures to classify the morphologies of galaxies in both a 3-class (elliptical, lenticular, spiral) and 4-class (+irregular/miscellaneous) schema with a dataset of 14034 visually-classified SDSS images. We develop a new CNN architecture that outperforms existing models in both 3 and 4-way classification, with overall classification accuracies of 83% and 81% respectively. We also compare the accuracies of 2-way / binary classifications between all four classes, showing that ellipticals and spirals are most easily distinguished (>98% accuracy), while spirals and irregulars are hardest to differentiate (78% accuracy). Through an analysis of all classified samples, we find tentative evidence that misclassifications are physically meaningful, with lenticulars misclassified as ellipticals tending to be more massive, among other trends. We further combine our binary CNN classifiers to perform a hierarchical classification of samples, obtaining comparable accuracies (81%) to the direct 3-class CNN, but considerably worse accuracies in the 4-way case (65%). As an additional verification, we apply our networks to a small sample of Galaxy Zoo images, obtaining accuracies of 92%, 82% and 77% for the binary, 3-way and 4-way classifications respectively., 18 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the detection of a short-lived narrow quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ~88 mHz in an Insight-HXMT observation during the soft state of the persistent black hole high mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1. This QPO is significantly detected in all the three instruments of Insight-HXMT, so in the broad energy range 1-250 keV. The fractional rms of the QPO does not show significant variations above 3 keV (~5%) while decreases at lower energy (~2%). We show that this QPO is different from the type-A, -B, and -C QPOs usually observed in black hole X-ray binaries. We compare QPOs at similar frequencies that have been previously detected in other persistent high-mass X-ray binaries in the soft state; we speculate that such QPOs might relate to some local inhomogeneity rarely formed in the accretion flow of wind-fed accretion systems., Comment: ApJ in press

We construct an approximate metric that represents the spacetime of spinning binary black holes (BBH) approaching merger. We build the metric as an analytical superposition of two Kerr metrics in harmonic coordinates, where we transform each black hole term with time-dependent boosts describing an inspiral trajectory. The velocities and trajectories of the boost are obtained by solving the post-Newtonian (PN) equations of motion at 3.5 PN order. We analyze the spacetime scalars of the new metric and we show that it is an accurate approximation of Einstein's field equations in vacuum for a BBH system in the inspiral regime. Furthermore, to prove the effectiveness of our approach, we test the metric in the context of a 3D general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GRMHD) simulation of accreting mini-disks around the black holes. We compare our results with a previous well-tested spacetime construction based on the asymptotic matching method. Point clouds are essential for storage and transmission of 3D content. As they can entail significant volumes of data, point cloud compression is crucial for practical usage. Recently, point cloud geometry compression approaches based on deep neural networks have been explored. In this paper, we evaluate the ability to predict perceptual quality of typical voxel-based loss functions employed to train these networks. We find that the commonly used focal loss and weighted binary cross entropy are poorly correlated with human perception. We thus propose a perceptual loss function for 3D point clouds which outperforms existing loss functions on the ICIP2020 subjective dataset. In addition, we propose a novel truncated distance field voxel grid representation and find that it leads to sparser latent spaces and loss functions that are more correlated with perceived visual quality compared to a binary representation. Context. To quantitatively decode the information stored within an observed spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state and accurate radiative transfer solution schemes are required. The accuracy of the model is then typically evaluated by comparing the calculated and observed spectra. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for binary companions and 3D structures in the stellar envelopes. The enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1 constitutes a perfect example of such a complex multi-D problem. Thus far, the LB-1 system has been indirectly investigated by 1D stellar-atmosphere codes and by spectral disentangling techniques, yielding differing conclusions about the nature of the system (e.g., a B-star and black-hole binary with an accretion disc around the black hole or a stripped-star and Be-star binary system have been proposed). Aims. To improve our understanding of the LB-1 system, we directly modelled the phase-dependent Hα line profiles of this system. To this end, we developed and present a multi-purpose binary-object spectral-synthesis code in 3D (BOSS-3D). Methods. BOSS-3D calculates synthetic line profiles for a given state of the circumstellar material. The standard pz-geometry commonly used for single stars is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each involved object and by accounting for the appropriate coordinate transformations. The code is then applied to the LB-1 system, considering two main hypotheses, a binary containing a stripped star and Be star, or a B star and a black hole with a disc. Results. Comparing these two scenarios, neither model can reproduce the detailed phase-dependent shape of the Hα line profiles. A satisfactory match with the observations, however, is obtained by invoking a disc around the primary object in addition to the Be-star disc or the black-hole accretion disc. Conclusions. The developed code can be used to model synthetic line profiles for a wide variety of binary systems, ranging from transit spectra of planetary atmospheres, to post-asymptotic giant branch binaries including circumstellar and circumbinary discs and massive-star binaries with stellar winds and disc systems. For the LB-1 system, our modelling provides strong evidence that each object in the system contains a disc-like structure.

Binary star systems are assumed to be co-natal and coeval, thus to have identical chemical composition. In this work we aim to test the hypothesis that there is a connection between observed element abundance patterns and the formation of planets using binary stars. Moreover, we also want to test how atomic diffusion might influence the observed abundance patterns. We conduct a strictly line-by-line differential chemical abundance analysis of 7 binary systems. Stellar atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances are obtained with extremely high precision (< 3.5%) using the high quality spectra from VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES. We find that 4 of 7 binary systems show subtle abundance differences (0.01 - 0.03 dex) without clear correlations with the condensation temperature, including two planet-hosting pairs. The other 3 binary systems exhibit similar degree of abundance differences correlating with the condensation temperature. We do not find any clear relation between the abundance differences and the occurrence of known planets in our systems. Instead, the overall abundance offsets observed in the binary systems (4 of 7) could be due to the effects of atomic diffusion. Although giant planet formation does not necessarily imprint chemical signatures onto the host star, the differences in the observed abundance trends with condensation temperature, on the other hand, are likely associated with diverse histories of planet formation (e.g., formation location). Furthermore, we find a weak correlation between abundance differences and binary separation, which may provide a new constraint on the formation of binary systems., 15 pages, 16 figures; accepted by MNRAS

In this work, we propose extreme compression techniques like binarization, ternarization for Neural Decoders such as TurboAE. These methods reduce memory and computation by a factor of 64 with a performance better than the quantized (with 1-bit or 2-bits) Neural Decoders. However, because of the limited representation capability of the Binary and Ternary networks, the performance is not as good as the real-valued decoder. To fill this gap, we further propose to ensemble 4 such weak performers to deploy in the edge to achieve a performance similar to the real-valued network. These ensemble decoders give 16 and 64 times saving in memory and computation respectively and help to achieve performance similar to real-valued TurboAE.

We discuss how to build ETF risk models. Our approach anchors on i) first building a multilevel (non-)binary classification/taxonomy for ETFs, which is utilized in order to define the risk factors, and ii) then building the risk models based on these risk factors by utilizing the heterotic risk model construction of https://ssrn.com/abstract=2600798 (for binary classifications) or general risk model construction of https://ssrn.com/abstract=2722093 (for non-binary classifications). We discuss how to build an ETF taxonomy using ETF constituent data. We report the discovery of four new pulsating subdwarf B (sdBV) stars from Campaign 7 of the Kepler spacecraft's K2 mission. EPICs 215776487, 217280630, 218366972, and 218717602 are all gravity (g)-mode pulsators and we also detect two pressure (p)-mode pulsations in EPIC 218717602. We detect asymptotic l=1 sequences in all four stars, allowing us to identify nearly all of the g modes. We detect evenly-spaced frequency multiplets in EPIC 218717602, from which we determine a rotation period near seven days. Spectroscopic observations determine that EPIC 218366972, is in a 5.92d binary with most likely a white dwarf companion of canonical mass while the others have no detected companions. As we detect no multiplets in EPIC 218366972, it is added to the growing list of subsynchronously rotating stars. With 40 Kepler-detected sdBV stars and a growing number of TESS publications, we update an examination of the group properties to provide direction for models. We notice a correlation between effective temperature and period of maximum pulsation amplitude, at least for g-mode pulsations, and update the previously-observed effective temperature-rotation period relation., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 1 large table at the end. The idea of nanomagnetic Boolean logic was advanced more than two decades ago. It envisaged the use of nanomagnets with two stable magnetization orientations as the primitive binary switch for implementing logic gates and ultimately combinational/sequential circuits. Enthusiastic proclamations of how nanomagnetic logic will eclipse traditional (transistor-based) logic circuits proliferated the applied physics literature. Two decades later there is not a single viable nanomagnetic logic chip in sight, let alone one that is a commercial success. In this perspective article, I offer my reasons on why this has come to pass. I present a realistic and tempered vision of nanomagnetic logic, pointing out many misconceptions about this paradigm, flaws in some proposals that appeared in the literature, shortcomings, and likely pitfalls that might stymie progress in this field., Comment: Accepted in IEEE Access

Doppler tomography is a method to compute the emissivity distribution within the co-rotating frames of binary stars from observations of their emission line profiles at multiple orbital phases. A key assumption of the method as it is usually applied is that all gas flow is parallel to the orbital plane of the binary. In this paper I examine the possibility of lifting this assumption to allow for motion parallel to the orbital "$z$" axis of the binary as well. I show that the problem is best considered in Fourier space, and that line profiles directly constrain the 3D Fourier transform of the 3D Doppler image in velocity space, but only over the 2D surface of a double-cone centred upon the origin, and aligned with the axis reciprocal to the $v_z$ velocity axis. Hence the full information needed for the recovery of the 3D emissivity distribution is simply not available. Despite this, an inversion method is presented and tested on a number of simulated images. While artefacts resulting from the missing information do appear, the tests suggest that there could be some value in applying 3D Doppler tomography to data from real systems, although considerable care is needed when doing so., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

This paper presents the results of a combined spectroscopic and photometric study of 20 contact binary systems: HV Aqr, OO Aql, FI Boo, TX Cnc, OT Cnc, EE Cet, RWCom, KR Com, V401 Cyg, V345 Gem, AK Her, V502 Oph, V566 Oph, V2612 Oph, V1363 Ori, V351 Peg, V357 Peg, Y Sex, V1123 Tau and W UMa, which was conducted in the frame of the W UMa Project. Together with 51 already covered by the project and an additional 67 in the existing literature, these systems bring the total number of contact binaries with known combined spectroscopic and photometric solutions to 138. It was found that mass, radius and luminosity of the components follow certain relations along the MS and new empirical power relations are extracted.We found that 30 per cent of the systems in the current sample show extreme values in their parameters, expressed in their mass ratio or fill-out factor. This study shows that, among the contact binary systems studied, some have an extremely low mass ratio (q < 0.1) or an ultra-short orbital period (Porb < 0.25 d), which are expected to show evidence of mass transfer progress. The evolutionary status of these components is discussed with the aid of correlation diagrams and their physical and orbital parameters compared to those in the entire sample of known contact binaries. The existence of very short orbital periods confirms the very slow nature of the merging process, which seems to explain why their components still exist as MS stars in contact confgurations even after several Gyr of evolution., 25 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables

Most massive stars experience binary interactions in their lifetimes that can alter both the surface and core structure of the stripped star with significant effects on their ultimate fate as core-collapse supernovae. However, core-collapse supernovae simulations to date have focused almost exclusively on the evolution of single stars. We present a systematic simulation study of single and binary-stripped stars with the same initial mass as candidates for core-collapse supernovae (11 - 21 M$_{\odot}$). Generally, we find that binary-stripped stars core tend to be less compact, with a more prominent, deeper silicon/oxygen interface, and explode preferentially to the corresponding single stars of the same initial mass. Such a dichotomy of behavior between these two modes of evolution would have important implications for supernovae statistics, including the final neutron star masses, explosion energies, and nucleosynthetic yields. Binary-stripped remnants are also well poised to populate the possible mass gap between the heaviest neutron stars and the lightest black holes. Our work presents an improvement along two fronts, as we self-consistently account for the pre-collapse stellar evolution and the subsequent explosion outcome. The edges in networks are not only binary, either present or absent, but also take weighted values in many scenarios (e.g., the number of emails between two users). The covariate-$p_0$ model has been proposed to model binary directed networks with the degree heterogeneity and covariates. However, it may cause information loss when it is applied in weighted networks. In this paper, we propose to use the Poisson distribution to model weighted directed networks, which admits the sparsity of networks, the degree heterogeneity and the homophily caused by covariates of nodes. We call it the \emph{network Poisson model}. The model contains a density parameter $\mu$, a $2n$-dimensional node parameter ${\theta}$ and a fixed dimensional regression coefficient ${\gamma}$ of covariates. Since the number of parameters increases with $n$, asymptotic theory is nonstandard. When the number $n$ of nodes goes to infinity, we establish the $\ell_\infty$-errors for the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs), $\hat{\theta}$ and $\hat{{\gamma}}$, which are $O_p( (\log n/n)^{1/2} )$ for $\hat{\theta}$ and $O_p( \log n/n)$ for $\hat{{\gamma}}$, up to an additional factor. Recently, there has been increasing activity to build dedicated Ising machines to accelerate the solution of combinatorial optimization problems by expressing these problems as a ground-state search of the Ising model. A common theme of such Ising machines is to tailor the physics of the underlying hardware to the mathematics of the Ising model to improve some aspect of performance that is measured in speed to solution, energy consumption per solution, or area footprint of the adopted hardware. One such approach to build an Ising spin, or a binary stochastic neuron (BSN), is a compact mixed-signal unit based on a low-barrier nanomagnet-based design that uses a single magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and three transistors (3T-1MTJ design) where the MTJ functions as a stochastic resistor (1SR). Such a compact unit can drastically reduce the area footprint of BSNs while promising massive scalability by leveraging the existing magnetic RAM technology that has integrated 1T-1MTJ cells in approximate Gbit densities. The 3T-1SR design however can be realized using different materials or devices that provide naturally fluctuating resistances. Extending previous work, we evaluate hardware BSNs from this general perspective by classifying necessary and sufficient conditions to design a fast and energy-efficient BSN that can be used in scaled Ising machine implementations. We connect our device analysis to systems-level metrics by emphasizing hardware-independent figures of merit such as flips per second and dissipated energy per random bit that can be used to classify any Ising machine.

Simultaneous observations from two spatially well-separated telescopes can lead to the measurements of the microlensing parallax parameter, an important quantity toward the determinations of the lens mass. The separation between Earth and Sun-Earth L2 point, $\sim0.01$ AU, is ideal for parallax measurements of short and ultra-short ($\sim$1\,hr to 10\,days) microlensing events, which are candidates of free-floating planet (FFP) events. In this work, we study the potential of doing so in the context of two proposed space-based missions, the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) in a Leo orbit and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (\emph{Roman}) at L2. We show that the joint observations of the two can directly measure the microlensing parallax of nearly all FFP events with timescales $t_{\rm E}\lesssim$ 10\,days as well as planetary (and stellar binary) events that show caustic crossing features. In this paper, we consider a recently-proposed model of teaching and learning under uncertainty, in which a teacher receives independent observations of a single bit corrupted by binary symmetric noise, and sequentially transmits to a student through another binary symmetric channel based on the bits observed so far. After a given number $n$ of transmissions, the student outputs an estimate of the unknown bit, and we are interested in the exponential decay rate of the error probability as $n$ increases. We propose a novel block-structured teaching strategy in which the teacher encodes the number of 1s received in each block, and show that the resulting error exponent is the binary relative entropy $D\big(\frac{1}{2}\|\max(p,q)\big)$, where $p$ and $q$ are the noise parameters. This matches a trivial converse result based on the data processing inequality, and settles two conjectures of [Jog and Loh, 2021] and [Huleihel, Polyanskiy, and Shayevitz, 2019]. In addition, we show that the computation time required by the teacher and student is linear in $n$. We also study a more general setting in which the binary symmetric channels are replaced by general binary-input discrete memoryless channels. We provide an achievability bound and a converse bound, and show that the two coincide in certain cases, including (i) when the two channels are identical, and (ii) when the student-teacher channel is a binary symmetric channel. Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) have gained increasing popularity over the years. Rooted into statistical physics, the ERGMs framework has been successfully employed for reconstructing networks, detecting statistically significant patterns in graphs, counting networked configurations with given properties. From a technical point of view, the ERGMs workflow is defined by two subsequent optimization steps: the first one concerns the maximization of Shannon entropy and leads to identify the functional form of the ensemble probability distribution that is maximally non-committal with respect to the missing information; the second one concerns the maximization of the likelihood function induced by this probability distribution and leads to its numerical determination. This second step translates into the resolution of a system of $O(N)$ non-linear, coupled equations (with $N$ being the total number of nodes of the network under analysis), a problem that is affected by three main issues, i.e. accuracy, speed and scalability. The present paper aims at addressing these problems by comparing the performance of three algorithms (i.e. Newton's method, a quasi-Newton method and a recently-proposed fixed-point recipe) in solving several ERGMs, defined by binary and weighted constraints in both a directed and an undirected fashion. While Newton's method performs best for relatively little networks, the fixed-point recipe is to be preferred when large configurations are considered, as it ensures convergence to the solution within seconds for networks with hundreds of thousands of nodes (e.g. the Internet, Bitcoin). We numerically study the algebraic properties of the Weyl tensor through the merger of two non-spinning black holes (BHs). We are particularly interested in the conjecture that for such a vacuum spacetime, which is zeroth-order algebraically general, a geometric horizon (GH), on which the spacetime is algebraically special and which is identified by the vanishing of a complex scalar invariant (${\mathcal{D}}$), characterizes a smooth foliation independent surface (horizon) associated with the BH. In the first simulation we investigate the level-$0$ sets of $\text{Re}({\mathcal{D}})$ (since $\text{Im}({\mathcal{D}})= 0$) in the head-on collision of two unequal mass BHs. In the second simulation we shall investigate the level-$\varepsilon$ sets of $|{\mathcal{D}}|$ through a quasi-circular merger of two non-spinning, equal mass BHs. In previous work [1], three TAIJI orbital deployments have been proposed to compose alternative LISA-TAIJI networks, TAIJIm (leading the Earth by $20^\circ$ and $-60^\circ$ inclined with respect to ecliptic plane), TAIJIp (leading the Earth by $20^\circ$ and $+60^\circ$ inclined), TAIJIc (colocated and coplanar with LISA) with respect to the LISA mission (trailing the Earth by $20^\circ$ and $+60^\circ$ inclined). And the LISA-TAIJIm network has been identified as the most capable configuration for massive black hole binary observation. In this work, we examine the performance of three networks to the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) especially for the comparison of two eligible configurations, LISA-TAIJIm and LISA-TAIJIp. This investigation shows that the detectability of LISA-TAIJIm is competitive with the LISA-TAIJIp network for some specific SGWB spectral shapes. And the capability of LISA-TAIJIm is also identical to LISA-TAIJIp to separate the SGWB components by determining the parameters of signals. This study presents an approach to lane detection involving the prediction of binary segmentation masks and per-pixel affinity fields. These affinity fields, along with the binary masks, can then be used to cluster lane pixels horizontally and vertically into corresponding lane instances in a post-processing step. This clustering is achieved through a simple row-by-row decoding process with little overhead; such an approach allows LaneAF to detect a variable number of lanes without assuming a fixed or maximum number of lanes. Moreover, this form of clustering is more interpretable in comparison to previous visual clustering approaches, and can be analyzed to identify and correct sources of error. Qualitative and quantitative results obtained on popular lane detection datasets demonstrate the model's ability to detect and cluster lanes effectively and robustly. Our proposed approach sets a new state-of-the-art on the challenging CULane dataset and the recently introduced Unsupervised LLAMAS dataset.

International audience; In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to address the Network Alignment problem. It is inspired from a previous message passing framework of Bayati et al. [2] and includes several modifications designed to significantly speed up the message updates as well as to enforce their convergence. Experiments show that our proposed model outperforms other state-of-the-art solvers. Finally, we propose an application of our method in order to address the Binary Diffing problem. We show that our solution provides better assignment than the reference differs in almost all submitted instances and outline the importance of leveraging the graphical structure of binary programs.

Comprehensive calculations were performed to predict the phase behaviour of large spherical colloids mixed with small spherical colloids that act as depletant. To this end, the free volume theory (FVT) of Lekkerkerker et al. [Europhys. Lett. 20 (1992) 559] is used as a basis and is extended to explicitly include the hard-sphere character of colloidal depletants into the expression for the free volume fraction. Taking the excluded volume of the depletants into account in both the system and the reservoir provides a relation between the depletant concentration in the reservoir and in the system that accurately matches with computer simulation results of Dijkstra et al. [Phys. Rev. E 59 (1999) 5744]. Moreover, the phase diagrams for highly asymmetric mixtures with size ratios q . 0:2 obtained by using this new approach corroborates simulation results significantly better than earlier FVT applications to binary hard-sphere mixtures. The phase diagram of a binary hard-sphere mixture with a size ratio of q = 0:4, where a binary interstitial solid solution is formed at high densities, is investigated using a numerical free volume approach. At this size ratio, the obtained phase diagram is qualitatively different from previous FVT approaches for hard-sphere and penetrable depletants, but again compares well with simulation predictions., Comment: The following article has been accepted by The Journal of Chemical Physics. Standard methodologies for the extraction of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) from auto- or cross-correlation of interferometric signals often involve the use of a filter function. The standard optimal filter maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between the total SGWB and the noise. We derive expressions for the optimal filter and SNR in the presence of a target SGWB plus other unwanted components. We also generalize the methodology to the case of template-free reconstruction. The formalism allows to easily perform analyses and forecasts that marginalize over foreground signals, such as the typical $\Omega_{\rm GW} \propto f^{2/3}$ background arising from binary coalescence. SN 2017ein is a narrow-lined Type Ic SN that was found to share a location with a point-like source in the face on spiral galaxy NGC 3938 in pre-supernova images, making SN 2017ein the first credible detection of a Type Ic progenitor. Results in the literature suggest this point-like source is likely a massive progenitor of 60-80 M$_{\odot}$, depending on if the source is a binary, a single star, or a compact cluster. Using new photometric and spectral data collected for 200 days, including several nebular spectra, we generate a consistent model covering the photospheric and nebular phase using a Monte Carlo radiation transport code. Photospheric phase modelling finds an ejected mass 1.2-2.0 M$_{\odot}$ with an $E_\mathrm{k}$ of $\sim(0.9 \pm0.2)\times 10^{51}$ erg, with approximately 1 M$_{\odot}$ of material below 5000 km s$^{-1}$ found from the nebular spectra. Both photospheric and nebular phase modelling suggests a $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.08-0.1 M$_{\odot}$. Modelling the [\OI] emission feature in the nebular spectra suggests the innermost ejecta is asymmetric. The modelling results favour a low mass progenitor of to 16-20 M$_{\odot}$, which is in disagreement with the pre-supernova derived high mass progenitor. What is the value of an individual model in an ensemble of binary classifiers? We answer this question by introducing a class of transferable utility cooperative games called \textit{ensemble games}. In machine learning ensembles, pre-trained models cooperate to make classification decisions. To quantify the importance of models in these ensemble games, we define \textit{Troupe} -- an efficient algorithm which allocates payoffs based on approximate Shapley values of the classifiers. We argue that the Shapley value of models in these games is an effective decision metric for choosing a high performing subset of models from the ensemble. Our analytical findings prove that our Shapley value estimation scheme is precise and scalable; its performance increases with size of the dataset and ensemble. Empirical results on real world graph classification tasks demonstrate that our algorithm produces high quality estimates of the Shapley value. We find that Shapley values can be utilized for ensemble pruning, and that adversarial models receive a low valuation. Knowledge graphs (KGs) provide information in machine interpretable form. In cases where multiple KGs are used in the same system, that information needs to be integrated. This is usually done by automated matching systems. Most of those systems consider only 1:1 (binary) matching tasks. Thus, matching a larger number of knowledge graphs with such systems would lead to quadratic efforts. In this paper, we empirically analyze different approaches to reduce the task of multi-source matching to a linear number of executions of binary matching systems. We show that the matching order of KGs and the multi-source strategy actually matter and that near-optimal results can be achieved with linear efforts.

Based on the two-minutes TESS data, we analyzed intrinsic oscillations of the primary component and identified seven confident independent $\delta$ Scuti frequencies ($f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3$, $f_4$, $f_7$, $f_{11}$, and $f_{12}$). Both of single-star evolutionary models and mass-accreting models are computed to reproduce the $\delta$ Scuti freqiencies. Fitting results of them match well with each other. The stellar parameters of the primary star yielded by asteroseismology are $M$ = $1.92^{+0.10}_{-0.02}$ $M_{\odot}$, $Z$ = 0.011$^{+0.006}_{-0.001}$, $R$ = $2.068^{+0.050}_{-0.007}$ $R_{\odot}$, $\log g$ = $4.090^{+0.010}_{-0.002}$, $T_{\rm eff}$ = $8346^{+244}_{-320}$ K, $L$ = $18.65^{+3.31}_{-2.82}$ $L_{\odot}$, which match well with the dynamic ones by the binary model. Furthermore, our asteroseismic results show that OO Dra is another Algol system that has just undergone the rapid mass-transfer stage. Fitting results of single-star evlutionary models indicate that the pulsator is helium-poor star with an age of 8.22$^{+0.12}_{-1.33}$ Myr, and the further mass-accreting models show that the primary star looks like an almost unevolved star formed by an extremely helium-poor mass accretion in Case A evolutionary scenario., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables. accepted for publication by ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2004.09916

Learned image compression techniques have achieved considerable development in recent years. In this paper, we find that the performance bottleneck lies in the use of a single hyperprior decoder, in which case the ternary Gaussian model collapses to a binary one. To solve this, we propose to use three hyperprior decoders to separate the decoding process of the mixed parameters in discrete Gaussian mixture likelihoods, achieving more accurate parameters estimation. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed method optimized by MS-SSIM achieves on average 3.36% BD-rate reduction compared with state-of-the-art approach.
