Coupling a semiconducting nanowire to a microwave cavity provides a powerfull means to assess the presence or absence of isolated Majorana fermions in the nanowire. These exotic bound states can cause a significant cavity frequency shift but also a strong cavity nonlinearity leading for instance to light squeezing. The dependence of these effects on the nanowire gate voltages gives direct signatures of the unique properties of Majorana fermions, such as their self-adjoint character and their exponential confinement., Comment: long version: 11 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the interplay between topological effects and Mott physics in two dimensions on a graphene-like lattice, via a tight-binding model containing an anisotropic spin-orbit coupling on the next-nearest-neighbour links and the Hubbard interaction. We thoroughly analyze the resulting phases, namely a topological band insulator phase or anisotropic quantum Spin Hall phase until moderate interactions, a N\'eel and Spiral phase at large interactions in the Mott regime, as well as the formation of a spin-orbital texture in the bulk at the Mott transition. The emergent magnetic orders at large interactions are analyzed through a spin wave analysis and mathematical arguments. At weak interactions, by analogy with the Kane-Mele model, the system is described through a Z_2 topological invariant. In addition, we describe how the anisotropic spin-orbit coupling already produces an exotic spin texture at the edges. The physics at the Mott transition is described in terms of a U(1) slave rotor theory. Taking into account gauge fluctuations around the mean-field saddle point solution, we show how the spin texture now proliferates into the bulk above the Mott critical point. The latter emerges from the response of the spinons under the insertion of monopoles and this becomes more pronounced as the spin-orbit coupling becomes prevalent. In three spatial dimensions, particles are limited to either bosonic or fermionic statistics. Two-dimensional systems, on the other hand, can support anyonic quasiparticles exhibiting richer statistical behaviours. An exciting proposal for quantum computation is to employ anyonic statistics to manipulate information. Since such statistical evolutions depend only on topological characteristics, the resulting computation is intrinsically resilient to errors. So-called non-Abelian anyons are most promising for quantum computation, but their physical realization may prove to be complex. Abelian anyons, however, are easier to understand theoretically and realize experimentally. Here we show that complex topological memories inspired by non-Abelian anyons can be engineered in Abelian models. We explicitly demonstrate the control procedures for the encoding and manipulation of quantum information in specific lattice models that can be implemented in the laboratory. We present a general method to study weak-coupling instabilities of a large class of interacting electron models in a controlled and unbiased way. Quite generally, the electron gas is unstable towards a superconducting state even in the absence of phonons, since high-energy spin fluctuations create an effective attraction between the quasi-particles. As an example, we show the occurrence of d-wave pairing in the repulsive Hubbard model in two dimensions. In one dimension or if the Fermi surface is nested, there are several competing instabilities. The required renormalization group formalism for this case is presented to lowest (one-loop) order on a most elementary level, connecting the idea of the ``parquet summation'' to the more modern concept of Wilson's effective action. The validity and restrictions of the one-loop approximation are discussed in detail. As a result, three different renormalization group approaches known in the literature are shown to be equivalent within the regime of applicability. We propose a simple formalism to calculate the conductance of any quantum network made of one-dimensional quantum wires. We apply this method to analyze, for two periodic systems, the modulation of this conductance with respect to the magnetic field. We also study the influence of an elastic disorder on the periodicity of the AB oscillations and we show that a recently proposed localization mechanism induced by the magnetic field resists to such a perturbation. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this approach for the understanding of a recent experiment on GaAs/GaAlAs networks., Comment: 4 pages, 5 EPS figures

Using the adiabatic switching of interactions, we establish a condition for the existence of electronic quasiparticles in a Luttinger liquid. It involves a characteristic interaction strength proportional to the inverse square root of the system length. An investigation of the exact energy level separation probability distribution shows that this interaction scale also corresponds to a cross-over from the non interacting behaviour to a rather typical case for integrable systems, namely an exponential distribution.
