We use the TNG300 magneto-hydrodynamic simulation and mock catalogues built using subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) to study the origin of the redshift evolution of the halo occupation distribution (HOD). We analyse stellar-mass selected galaxy samples with fixed number densities, spanning the redshift range $0 \le z \le 3$. We measure their halo occupation functions and fit the HOD parameters to study their evolution over cosmic time. The TNG300 galaxy population strongly depends on the baryonic physics implemented in the simulation. In contrast, the galaxy population predicted by a basic SHAM model without scatter is a direct result of the cosmology of the dark matter simulation. We find that the HOD evolution is similar for both models and is consistent with a previous study of the HOD evolution in semi-analytical models. Specifically, this is the case for the ratio between the characteristic halo masses for hosting central and satellite galaxies. The only HOD parameter whose evolution varies across models is $\sigma_{\rm logM}$, which contains information about the stellar mass-halo mass relation of the galaxies and does not strongly impact galaxy clustering. We also demonstrate that the dependence on the specific values of the cosmological parameters is small. We conclude that the cosmology of the galaxy sample, i.e. the cosmological hierarchical growth of structure, and not the baryonic physics prescriptions, governs the evolution of the HOD for stellar mass-selected samples. A significant excess of the stellar mass density at high redshift has been discovered from the early data release of James Webb Space Telescope ($\it{JWST}$), and it may require a high star formation efficiency. However, this will lead to large number density of ionizing photons in the epoch of reionization (EoR), so that the reionization history will be changed, which can arise tension with the current EoR observations. Warm dark matter (WDM), via the free streaming effect, can suppress the formation of small-scale structure as well as low-mass galaxies. This provides an effective way to decrease the ionizing photons when considering a large star formation efficiency in high-$z$ massive galaxies without altering the cosmic reionization history. On the other hand, the constraints on the properties of warm dark matter can be derived from the $\it JWST$ observations. In this work, we study WDM as a possible solution to reconcile the $\it JWST$ stellar mass density of high-$z$ massive galaxies and reionization history. We find that the WDM particle mass with $m_{\text{W}}\sim0.6$ keV can match both the $\it JWST$ high-$z$ comoving cumulative stellar mass density and the reionization history, for a star formation efficiency parameter range $f_{*}^{0} = 0.1 - 1.0$., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Primordial gravitational waves are one of the most important predictions of inflation theory, and measurements of their imprints on the cosmic microwave background are actively pursued, but not yet succeed until now. Here we point out that measurements of primordial gravitational waves could be conceivable through searching for a signal of second-order tensor perturbations, which were produced due to nonlinear couplings between the linear tensor and scalar perturbations in the early universe. A blue-tilted tensor spectral index is anticipated, and the measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio can potentially be performed with high precision with a detector network composed of the ground-based Einstein Telescope and the space-borne LISA project on a decade timescale., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, 2 appendices

The Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations on an arbitrary background geometry with a timelike scalar profile has been recently constructed in the context of scalar-tensor theories. Unlike General Relativity, the regular Hayward metric is realized as an exact background metric in the Effective Field Theory with timelike scalar profile without resorting to special matter field, such as nonlinear electrodynamics. The fundamental quasinormal mode for axial graviational perturbations of this black hole has been considered recently with the help of various methods. Here we make a further step in this direction and find that, unlike the fundamental mode, a few first overtones deviate from their Schwarzschild limit at a much higher rate. This outburst of overtones occurs because the overtones are extremely sensitive to the least change of the near-horizon geometry. The analytical formula for quasinormal modes is obtained in the eikonal regime. In addition, we calculated grey-body factors and showed that the regular Hayward black hole with a scalar hair has a smaller grey-body factor than the Schwarzschild one. Integration of the wave-like equation in the time-domain shows that the power-law tails, following the ring-down phase, are indistinguishable from the Schwarzschild ones at late times., Comment: 13 pages, the version accepted for publication in JCAP

We present a new high-precision, JWST-based, strong lensing model for the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at $z=0.3072$. By combining the deep, high-resolution JWST imaging from the GLASS-JWST and UNCOVER programs and a Director's Discretionary Time program, with newly obtained VLT/MUSE data, we identify 32 multiple images from 11 background sources lensed by two external sub-clusters at distances of ~160" from the main cluster. The new MUSE observations enable the first spectroscopic confirmation of a multiple image system in the external clumps. Moreover, the re-analysis of the spectro-photometric archival and JWST data yields 27 additional multiple images in the main cluster. The new lens model is constrained by 149 multiple images ($\sim66\%$ more than in our previous Bergamini et al. 2023 model) covering an extended redshift range between 1.03 and 9.76. The subhalo mass component of the cluster includes 177 member galaxies down to $m_{\rm F160W}=21$, 163 of which are spectroscopically confirmed. Internal velocity dispersions are measured for 85 members. The new lens model is characterized by a remarkably low scatter between predicted and observed positions of the multiple images (0.43"). This precision is unprecedented given the large multiple image sample, the complexity of the cluster mass distribution, and the large modeled area. The improved accuracy and resolution of the cluster total mass distribution provides a robust magnification map over a $\sim\!45$ arcmin$^2$ area, which is critical for inferring the intrinsic physical properties of the highly magnified, high-$z$ sources. The physical processes that establish the morphological evolution and the structural diversity of galaxies are key unknowns in extragalactic astrophysics. Here we report the finding of the morphologically-mature galaxy JADES-GS+53.18343-27.79097, which existed within the first 700 million years of the Universe's history. This star-forming galaxy with a stellar mass of $10^{8.6}$ solar masses consists of three components, a highly-compact core with a half-light radius of 144 pc, a strongly star-forming disc with a radius of 468 pc, and a star-forming clump, which all show distinctive star-formation histories. The central stellar mass density of this galaxy is within a factor of two of the most massive present-day ellipticals, while being globally 1000 times less massive. The radial profile of the specific star-formation rate is strongly rising toward the outskirts. The measurement of the Hubble constant $H_0$ plays an important role in the study of cosmology. In this letter, we propose a new method to constrain the Hubble constant using the strongly lensed gravitational wave (GW) signals. By reparameterizing the waveform, we find that the lensed waveform is sensitive to the $H_0$. Assuming the scenario that no electromagnetic counterpart of the GW source can be identified, our method can still give meaningful constraints on the $H_0$ with the information of the lens redshift. We then apply Fisher information matrix and Markov Chain Monte Carlo to evaluate the potential of this method. For the space-based GW detector, TianQin, the $H_0$ can be constrained within a relative error of $\sim$ 0.3-2\%, using a single strongly lensed GW event. We analyze the X-ray properties for a sample of 23 high probability AGN candidates with ultraviolet variability identified in Wasleske et al. (2022). Using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the XMM-Newton Observatory, we find 11/23 nuclei are X-ray detected. We use SED modeling to compute star formation rates and show that the X-ray luminosities are typically in excess of the X-ray emission expected from star formation by at least an order of magnitude. Interestingly, this sample shows a diversity of optical spectroscopic properties. We explore possible reasons for why some objects lack optical spectroscopic signatures of black hole activity while still being UV variable and X-ray bright. We find that host galaxy stellar emission and obscuration from gas and dust are all potential factors. We study where this sample falls on relationships such as $\alpha_{\rm OX}-L_{2500}$ and $L_{X}-L_{IR}$ and find that some of the sample falls outside the typical scatter for these relations, indicating they differ from the standard quasar population. With the diversity of optical spectroscopic signatures and varying impacts of dust and stellar emissions on our sample, these results emphasizes the strength of variability in selecting the most complete set of AGN, regardless of other host galaxy properties., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures. We consider the evolution of current-carrying cosmic string networks described by the charge-velocity-dependent one scale (CVOS) model beyond the linear equation of state regime, specifically focusing on the Witten superconducting model. We find that, generically, for almost chiral currents, the network evolution reduces dynamically to that of the linear case, which has been discussed in our previous work. However, the Witten model introduces a maximum critical current which constrains the network scaling behaviour during the radiation era when currents can grow and approach this limit. Unlike the linear model, only if the energy density in the critical current is comparable to the bare string tension will there be substantial backreaction on the network evolution, thus changing the observational predictions of superconducting strings from those expected from a Nambu-Goto network. During the matter era, if there are no external sources, then dynamical effects dilute these network currents and they disappear at late times., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Galaxies and their dark-matter halos are commonly presupposed to spin. But it is an open question how this spin manifests in halos and soliton cores made of scalar dark matter (SDM, including fuzzy/wave/ultralight-axion dark matter). One way spin could manifest in a necessarily irrotational SDM velocity field is with a vortex. But recent results have cast doubt on this scenario, finding that vortices are generally unstable except with substantial repulsive self-interaction. In this paper, we introduce an alternative route to stability: in both (non-relativistic) analytic calculations and simulations, a black hole or other central mass at least as massive as a soliton can stabilize a vortex within it. In this work, we reconstruct the cosmological unified dark fluid model proposed previously by Elkhateeb \cite{Elkhateeb:2017oqy} in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. Utilizing the equivalence between the scalar-tensor theory and the $f(R)$ gravity theory, the scalar field for the dark fluid is obtained, whence the $f(R)$ function is extracted and its viability is discussed. The $f(R)$ functions and the scalar field potentials have then been extracted in the early and late times of asymptotically de Sitter spacetime. The ability of our function to describe early time inflation is also tested. The early time scalar field potential is used to derive the slow roll inflation parameters. Our results of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and the scalar spectral index $n_s$ are in good agreement with results from Planck-2018 TT+TE+EE+lowE data for the model parameter $m > 2$., 11 pages and 2 figures

Since the beginning of the 20th century, a continuous evolution and perfection of what we today call the standard cosmological model has been produced, although some authors like to distinguish separate periods within this evolution. A possible historical division of the development of cosmology into six periods is: (1) the initial period (1917-1927); (2) the period of development (1927-1945); (3) the period of consolidation (1945-1965); (4) the period of acceptance (1965-1980); (5) the period of enlargement (1980-1998); and (6) the period of high-precision experimental cosmology (1998-now). The last period started with a epistemological optimism that has declined with time, and the expression "crisis in cosmology" is now stubbornly reverberating in the media. We employ a machine learning (ML) algorithm to analyze cosmological background data and the linear red-shift space distortion (RSD) data in a model-independent way, with specific focus on the Hubble expansion rate and the growth of large-scale structure. We find strong evidence that the natural enhancement in the Hubble parameter at low redshifts is due to the underlying phantom nature of dark energy, rather than low matter density. As for the RSD data, we find a higher value of $\sigma^8_{(0)}$ which is consistent with CMB's predictions, but the outcome of low matter density leads to unresolved tension. This might point towards a new physical phenomenon at the perturbative level in the low redshift regime. We extract the Hubble law by the frequency-shift considerations of test particles revolving the Kerr black hole in asymptotically de Sitter spacetime. To this end, we take into account massive geodesic particles circularly orbiting the Kerr-de Sitter black holes that emit redshifted photons towards a distant observer which is moving away from the emitter-black hole system. By considering this configuration, we obtain an expression for redshift in terms of the spacetime parameters, such as mass, angular momentum, and the cosmological constant. Then, we find the frequency shift of photons versus the Hubble constant with the help of some physically motivated approximations. Finally, some exact formulas for the Schwarzschild black hole mass and the Hubble constant in terms of the observational redshift of massive bodies circularly orbiting this black hole are extracted. Primordial non-Gaussianity encodes vital information of the physics of the early universe, particularly during the inflationary epoch. To explore the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, we study the anisotropies in gravitational wave background induced by the linear cosmological scalar perturbations during radiation domination in the early universe. We provide the first complete analysis to the angular power spectrum of such scalar-induced gravitational waves. The spectrum is expressed in terms of the initial inhomogeneities, the Sachs-Wolfe effect, and their crossing. It is anticipated to have frequency dependence and multipole dependence, i.e., $C_\ell(\nu)\propto [\ell(\ell+1)]^{-1}$ with $\nu$ being a frequency and $\ell$ referring to the $\ell$-th spherical harmonic multipole. In particular, the initial inhomogeneites in this background depend on gravitational-wave frequency. These properties are potentially useful for the component separation, foreground removal, and breaking degeneracies in model parameters, making the non-Gaussian parameter $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ measurable. In direct dark matter (DM) detection via scattering off the electrons, the momentum transfer plays a crucial role. Previous work showed that for self-interacting DM, if the DM particle has a size (the so-called puffy DM), the radius effect could dominate the momentum transfer and become another source of velocity dependence for self-scattering cross section. In this work we investigate the direct detection of puffy DM particles with different radii through electron recoil. We find that comparing with the available experimental exclusion limits dominated by the mediator effect for XENON10, XENON100 and XENON1T, the constraints on the puffy DM-electron scattering cross-section become much weaker for large radius DM particles. The final phase of the reionization process can be probed by rest-frame UV absorption spectra of quasars at z>6, shedding light on the properties of the diffuse intergalactic medium within the first Gyr of the Universe. The ESO Large Programme "XQR-30: the ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" dedicated ~250 hours of observations at the VLT to create a homogeneous and high-quality sample of spectra of 30 luminous quasars at z~6, covering the rest wavelength range from the Lyman limit to beyond the MgII emission. Twelve quasar spectra of similar quality from the XSHOOTER archive were added to form the enlarged XQR-30 sample, corresponding to a total of ~350 hours of on-source exposure time. The median effective resolving power of the 42 spectra is R~11400 and 9800 in the VIS and NIR arm, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio per 10 km/s pixel ranges from ~11 to 114 at $\lambda \simeq 1285$ \AA rest frame, with a median value of ~29. We describe the observations, data reduction and analysis of the spectra, together with some first results based on the E-XQR-30 sample. New photometry in the H and K bands are provided for the XQR-30 quasars, together with composite spectra whose characteristics reflect the large absolute magnitudes of the sample. These lectures, presented at the 2022 TASI summer school, give an introductory overview of first-order phase transitions in the early Universe, baryogenesis, and the resulting gravitational wave phenomenology. We introduce thermal field theory via the imaginary time formalism, and comment on the pitfalls of 1-loop calculations and alternative approaches. Then, we discuss how to calculate the false vacuum decay rate in first order phase transitions, of which we give various examples in theories beyond the Standard Model. Baryogenesis is presented via the Sakharov conditions, and how they are met in important classes of examples. Jet precession is sometimes invoked to explain asymmetries in radio galaxy (RG) jets and "X/S/Z-shape" radio galaxies, caused by the presence of a binary black hole companion to the source active galactic nucleus (AGN) or by accretion instabilities. We present a series of simulations of radio galaxy jet precession to examine how these sources would evolve over time, including a passive distribution of cosmic ray electrons (CRe) so we can model radio synchrotron emissions and create synthetic radio maps of the sources. We find that a single source viewed from different angles can result in differing RG morphological classifications, confusing physical implications of these classifications. Additionally, the jet trajectories can become unstable due to their own self-interactions and lead to "reorientation events" that may look like the effects of external dynamics such as shocks, winds, or cold fronts in the medium. Recent observations of GN-z11 with JWST/NIRSpec revealed numerous oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and helium emission lines at $z=10.6$. Using the measured line fluxes, we derive abundance ratios of individual elements within the interstellar medium (ISM) of this super-luminous galaxy. Driven by the unusually-bright NIII] $\lambda$1750 and NIV] $\lambda$1486 emission lines (and by comparison faint OIII] $\lambda\lambda$1660, 1666 lines), our fiducial model prefers log(N/O)>-0.25, greater than four times solar and in stark contrast to lower-redshift star-forming galaxies. The derived log(C/O)>-0.78, ($\approx$30 % solar) is also elevated with respect to galaxies of similar metallicity (12+log(O/H)$\approx7.82$), although less at odds with lower-redshift measurements. Given the long timescale typically expected to enrich nitrogen with stellar winds, traditional scenarios require a very fine-tuned formation history to reproduce such an elevated N/O. We find no compelling evidence that nitrogen enhancement in GN-z11 can be explained by enrichment from metal-free Population III stars. Interestingly, yields from runaway stellar collisions in a dense stellar cluster or a tidal disruption event provide promising solutions to give rise to these unusual emission lines at $z=10.6$, and explain the resemblance between GN-z11 and a nitrogen-loud quasar. We present a novel simulation-based cosmological analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy redshift-space clustering. Compared to analysis methods based on perturbation theory, our simulation-based approach allows us to probe a much wider range of scales, $0.4 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$ to $63 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$, including highly non-linear scales, and marginalises over astrophysical effects such as assembly bias. We apply this framework to data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey LOWZ sample cross-correlated with state-of-the-art gravitational lensing catalogues from the Kilo Degree Survey and the Dark Energy Survey. We show that gravitational lensing and redshift-space clustering when analysed over a large range of scales place tight constraints on the growth-of-structure parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m} / 0.3}$. Overall, we infer $S_8 = 0.792 \pm 0.022$ when analysing the combination of galaxy-galaxy lensing and projected galaxy clustering and $S_8 = 0.771 \pm 0.027$ for galaxy redshift-space clustering. These findings highlight the potential constraining power of full-scale studies over studies analysing only large scales, and also showcase the benefits of analysing multiple large-scale structure surveys jointly. Our inferred values for $S_8$ fall below the value inferred from the CMB, $S_8 = 0.834 \pm 0.016$. Symmetries play an important role in fundamental physics. In gravity and field theories, particular attention has been paid to Weyl (or conformal) symmetry. However, once the theory contains a scalar field, conformal transformations of the metric can be considered a subclass of a more general type of transformation, so-called disformal transformation. Here, we investigate the implications of pure disformal symmetry in the Universe. We derive the form of general disformal invariant tensors from which we build the most general disformal invariant action. We argue that, in cosmology, disformal symmetry amounts to require that the lapse function is fully replaced by a (time-like) scalar field at the level of the action. We then show that disformal symmetry is in general an exactly equivalent formulation of general mimetic gravity. Lastly, we go beyond mimetic gravity and find that a particular class of invariance leads to seemingly Ostrogradski-like (with higher derivatives) Lagrangians, which are nevertheless absent of Ostrogradski ghosts in a cosmological background, despite having an additional degree of freedom. We also propose an application of our formalism to find new invertible disformal transformations, where the coefficient involves higher derivatives and curvature, further expanding the theory space of scalar-tensor theories., Comment: 21 pages

Recently, observational hints for supermassive black holes have been accumulating, which has inspired ones to wonder: Can primordial black holes (PBHs) be supermassive, in particular with the mass $M\gtrsim 10^{9}M_\odot$? A supercritical bubble (with an inflating baby universe inside it) that nucleated during inflation can develop into a PBH in our observable Universe. Here, we find that when the inflaton slowly passes by a neighboring vacuum, the nucleating rate of supercritical bubbles would inevitably attain a peak, so the mass distribution of multiverse PBHs, and the mass of peak can be up to $M\gtrsim 10^{11}M_\odot$. Thus our mechanism naturally provides a primordial origin of supermassive BHs., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The galaxy distribution in dark matter-dominated halos is expected to approximately trace the details of the underlying dark matter substructure. In this paper we introduce halo `core-tracking' as a way to efficiently follow the small-scale substructure in cosmological simulations and apply the technique to model the galaxy distribution in observed clusters. The method relies on explicitly tracking the set of particles identified as belonging to a halo's central density core, once a halo has attained a certain threshold mass. The halo cores are then followed throughout the entire evolution of the simulation. The aim of core-tracking is to simplify substructure analysis tasks by avoiding the use of subhalos and, at the same time, to more easily account for the so-called ``orphan'' galaxies, which have lost substantial dark mass due to tidal stripping. We show that simple models based on halo cores can reproduce the number and spatial distribution of galaxies found in optically-selected clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. (abridged) We present simulations of halo formation and evolution in scalar field dark matter (SFDM) cosmologies in the Thomas-Fermi regime, aka ``SFDM-TF", where a strong repulsive 2-particle self-interaction (SI) is included, being a valuable alternative to CDM, with the potential to resolve its ``cusp-core" problem. In general, SFDM behaves like a quantum fluid. Previous literature has presented two fluid approximations for SFDM-TF, as well as simulations of halo formation. These results confirmed earlier expectations and are generally in mutual agreement, but discrepancies were also reported. Therefore, we perform dedicated 3D cosmological simulations for the SFDM-TF model, applying both fluid approximations, as well as for CDM. Our results are very well in accordance with previous works and extend upon them, in that we can explain the reported discrepancies as a result of different simulation setups. We find some interesting details: The evolution of both SFDM-TF and CDM halos follows a 2-stage process. In the early stage, the density profile in the center becomes close to a $(n=1.5)$-polytropic core, dominated by an "effective" velocity-dispersion pressure $P_{\sigma}$ which is common to both dark matter models. Consecutively, for CDM halos, the core transitions into a central cusp. In SFDM-TF halos, the additional pressure $P_\text{SI}$ due to SI determines the second stage of the evolution, where the central region follows closely a $(n=1)$-polytropic core, embedded in a nearly isothermal envelope, i.e. the outskirts are similar to CDM. We also encounter a new effect, namely a late-time expansion of both polytropic core plus envelope, because the size of the almost isothermal halo envelope is affected by the expansion of the background universe. Gauss-Bonnet Dark Energy has been a popular model to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Quite generically it also predicts the speed of gravitational waves $c_{GW}$ to be different from the speed of light. This fact alone led some authors to exclude such models in view of the new tight observational constraints on $c_{GW}$. However, the behaviour of $c_{GW}$ depends on the choice of the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling function. It is possible to construct models where $c_{GW}$ is always equal to the speed of light. More generally, $c_{GW}$ is a time dependent function with instances where both speeds coincide. Nevertheless, we observe that the bound on $c_{GW}$ excludes scenarios where the GB term directly affects the expansion of the Universe, even if the constraint on the variation of the coupling function does not appear to be strong. We perform the dynamical systems analysis to see if the expansion of the Universe could be affected indirectly by modulating the behaviour of the scalar field, which modulates the GB coupling. It is shown that either the bounds on $c_{GW}$ are violated by many orders of magnitude, or it might be very difficult to find models that are consistent with other cosmological observations., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The hierarchical structure formation paradigm predicts the formation of pairs of supermassive black holes in merging galaxies. When both (or one) members of the SMBH pair are unobscured AGNs, the system can be identified as a dual (or offset) AGN. Quantifying the abundance of these AGN pairs as functions of separation, redshift and host properties is crucial to understanding SMBH formation and AGN fueling in the broad context of galaxy formation. The High Latitude Wide Area Survey with Roman, with its unprecedented combination of sensitivity, spatial resolution, area and NIR wavelength coverage, will revolutionize the study of galactic-scale environments of SMBH pairs. We describe the gravitational lens on a constant-curvature background by using an optical constant-curvature (OCC) approach that allows to explicitly take into account a global geometry of the background space. First, light rays are curves in the space described by an optical metric. The OCC approach focuses on the case that the optical metric for the background spacetime has a constant curvature, for which the exact lens equation on an OCC background [Phys. Rev. D 105, 084022 (2022)] can be used. As a concrete example, next we discuss the gravitational lens in Mannheim-Kazanas (MK) solution, which include Rindler and de Sitter terms. By fully taking into account a background dependence of the light deflection, the deflection angle of light consistent with the OCC approach is well defined at large distance. General consistency requirements of Quantum Gravity demand the existence of one axion per Yang-Mills group. In this work, we consider theories with dark Yang-Mills sectors and investigate general phenomenological implications of these necessary axions. We carry out computations for two simple models, namely a pure Yang-Mills sector and $N$ exact Standard Model copies. For the former, the misalignment mechanism results in a minimal dark confinement scale $\Lambda_{\rm conf} \gtrsim 1 \, {\rm eV}$ if the dark sector axion is supposed to make up the dark matter. For the latter, the misalignment mechanism without fine-tuning of the initial misalignment angle places an upper bound on $N$ below the species bound. When the PQ symmetries are broken during inflation, the collective isocurvature fluctuations do not necessarily tighten the bound on the inflationary Hubble scale arising from a single axion. We also point out that axion stars collectively made from axions of different dark sectors with a suppressed mass spectrum are not possible. Lastly, for the two models at hand, intersector interaction through axion kinetic mixing leads to the existence of two distinct axion states. For a single dark YM sector, the upper bound $\Lambda_{\rm conf} \lesssim 10^{12} \, {\rm GeV}$ emerges from the stability requirement of the dark sector axion. For $N$ exact SM copies, the mass and photon coupling of the second state is completely determined after a potential measurement of the analogous parameters of the first axion., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), sources of high-frequency gravitational waves and likely production sites for heavy element nucleosynthesis via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). These heavy elements include some of great geophysical, biological and cultural importance, such as thorium, iodine and gold. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with compact object mergers, and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational-wave merger GW170817. We obtained James Webb Space Telescope mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A=130), and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-IR due to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy element nucleosynthesis across the Universe., Comment: Submitted. The SH0ES collaboration Hubble constant determination is in a $\mathord{\sim}5\sigma$ difference with the \textit{Planck} value, known as the Hubble tension. The accuracy of the Hubble constant measured with extragalactic Cepheids depends on robust stellar-crowding background estimation. Riess et al. 2020 (R20) compared the light curves amplitudes of extragalactic and MW Cepheids to constrain an unaccounted systematic blending bias, $\gamma=-0.029\pm0.037\,\rm{mag}$, which cannot explain the required, $\gamma=0.24\pm0.05\,\rm{mag}$, to resolve the Hubble tension. Further checks by Riess et al. 2022 demonstrate that a possible blending is not likely related to the size of the crowding correction. We repeat the R20 analysis, with the following main differences: 1. We limit the extragalactic and MW Cepheids comparison to periods $P\lesssim50\,\rm{d}$, since the number of MW Cepheids with longer periods is minimal; 2. We use publicly available data to recalibrate amplitude ratios of MW Cepheids in standard passbands; 3. We remeasure the amplitudes of Cepheids in NGC 5584 and NGC 4258 in two HST filters (F555W and F350LP) to improve the empirical constraint on their amplitude ratio $A^{555}/A^{350}$. We show that the filter transformations introduce an $\mathord{\approx}0.04\,\rm{mag}$ uncertainty in determining $\gamma$, not included by R20. While our final estimate, $\gamma=0.013\pm0.057\,\rm{mag}$, is consistent with the value derived by R20, the error is somewhat larger, and the best-fit value is shifted by $\mathord{\approx}0.04\,\rm{mag}$. Although the obtained $\gamma$ for this crowding test is consistent with zero, folding (in quadratures) it is $\mathord{\approx}3.0\sigma$ away from aligning with \textit{Planck}. In some extensions of the standard model of particle physics, the values of the fundamental coupling constants vary in space and time. Some observations of quasars hint at time and spatial variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$. Here, the Bekenstein-Sandvik-Barrow-Magueijo (BSBM) model (which posits the existence of a scalar field driving evolution in the fundamental electric charge $e$) is tested against quasar and Planck satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. In this model, variations in $e$ are coupled to the matter density through a factor $\zeta_{\rm m}/{\omega}$, which is related to electromagnetic contributions to nucleon masses, and {the energy} scale of new physics. Simulations conducted here do not support claims that the electrostatic contribution to $\zeta_{m}$ is completely shielded. Other common approximations used in BSBM field evolution are found to be adequate. Principal components of the CMB data with respect to variations in $\alpha$ are used to obtain constraints of $\zeta_{\rm m}/{\omega}\lesssim 9.3 \times 10^{-9}$ for a massless field. This paper explores the physics of second-order gravitational waves (GWs) induced by scalar-tensor perturbation interactions in the radiation-dominated Universe. We investigate the distinctive signatures of these GWs and their detectability compared to scalar-induced GWs. Unlike scalar-scalar induced GWs, scalar-tensor induced GWs do not present resonances or a logarithmic running in the low frequency tail in the case of peaked primordial spectra. But, interestingly, they partly inherit any primordial parity violation of tensor modes. We find that chirality in primordial GWs can lead to distinguishing effects in scalar-tensor induced GWs in the ultraviolet (UV) region. We also address a potential divergence in our GWs and explore possible solutions. What would a parity-violating universe look like? We present a numerical and theoretical study of mirror asymmetries in the late universe, using a new suite of $N$-body simulations: QUIJOTE-Odd. These feature parity-violating initial conditions, injected via a simple ansatz for the imaginary primordial trispectrum and evolved into the non-linear regime. We find that the realization-averaged power spectrum, bispectrum, halo mass function, and matter PDF are not affected by our modifications to the initial conditions, deep into the non-linear regime, which we argue arises from rotational and translational invariance. In contrast, the parity-odd trispectrum of matter (measured using a new estimator), shows distinct signatures proportional to the parity-violating parameter, $p_{\rm NL}$, which sets the amplitude of the primordial trispectrum. We additionally find intriguing signatures in the angular momentum of halos, with the primordial trispectrum inducing a non-zero correlation between angular momentum and smoothed velocity field, proportional to $p_{\rm NL}$. We present a cosmic density field reconstruction method that augments the traditional reconstruction algorithms with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Following Shallue $\&$ Eisenstein (2022), the key component of our method is to use the $\textit{reconstructed}$ density field as the input to the neural network. We extend this previous work by exploring how the performance of these reconstruction ideas depends on the input reconstruction algorithm, the reconstruction parameters, and the shot noise of the density field, as well as the robustness of the method. We build an eight-layer CNN and train the network with reconstructed density fields computed from the Quijote suite of simulations. The reconstructed density fields are generated by both the standard algorithm and a new iterative algorithm. In real space at $z=0$, we find that the reconstructed field is $90\%$ correlated with the true initial density out to $k\sim 0.5 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, a significant improvement over $k\sim 0.2 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ achieved by the input reconstruction algorithms. We find similar improvements in redshift space, including an improved removal of redshift space distortions at small scales. We also find that the method is robust across changes in cosmology. Additionally, the CNN removes much of the variance from the choice of different reconstruction algorithms and reconstruction parameters. However, the effectiveness decreases with increasing shot noise, suggesting that such an approach is best suited to high density samples. This work highlights the additional information in the density field beyond linear scales as well as the power of complementing traditional analysis approaches with machine learning techniques., 10 pages, 8 figures. Local universe measurements of the Hubble constant (H0) using SNe Ia with Cepheids as calibrators yield a value of H0 which is in tension with the value inferred from the CMB and other higher redshift probes. In ref. [1], the authors proposed a rapid transition in the value of the effective Newtonian gravitational constant G in order to alleviate the Hubble tension. The transition point was chosen so as to only affect distance estimates to Hubble flow SNe. However, in this study, the authors made the assumption that SNe Ia peak luminosity $L$ increases with Chandrashekhar mass $M_c$. This hypothesis contradicts a previous semi-analytic study of SN light curves in the presence of G-transition [2] which found that $L\propto M_c^{-0.97}$. Motivated by the results of refs. [1] and [2], we propose a hypothesis of a sudden recent change in the effective G at an epoch which corresponds to a look-back distance between $\sim$ 7 - 80 Mpc. A transition in G at these distances would affect both our estimate of the distances to Cepheids in calibrator galaxies, as well as to the Hubble flow supernovae. Upon fitting the observational data to this hypothesis, we find three interesting results: (i) we find mild evidence for a G-transition at 22.4 Mpc (73 million years ago) which is preferred (using certain estimators) by the calibrator type Ia SNe data over no G-transition, (ii) the H0 parameter inferred under this hypothesis is in good agreement with the value obtained from the CMB for a 4% larger value of G at earlier times, thus potentially resolving the Hubble tension, (iii) we obtain a fit to the scaling relationship between SN peak luminosity $L$ and Chandrasekhar mass $M_c$, as $L\propto M_c^{-1.68 \pm 0.68}$, which is in good agreement with the prediction of the theoretical study of ref. We measure weak lensing cosmic shear power spectra from the three-year galaxy shear catalog of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program imaging survey. The shear catalog covers $416 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ of the northern sky, with a mean $i$-band seeing of 0.59 arcsec and an effective galaxy number density of 15 $\mathrm{arcmin}^{-2}$ within our adopted redshift range. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. We present a series of full-shape analyses of galaxy power spectrum multipole measurements from the 6dFGS, BOSS, and eBOSS galaxy surveys. We use an emulated effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS) model to conduct these analyses. We exploit the accelerated prediction speed of the neural-network-based emulator to explore various analysis setups for our cosmological inference pipeline. Via a set of mock full-shape analyses of synthetic power spectrum multipoles, designed to approximate measurements from the surveys above, we demonstrate that the use of alternative priors on nuisance parameters and restricted model complexity reduces many of the biases previously observed in marginalised cosmological constraints coming from EFTofLSS analyses. The alternative priors take the form of a Jeffreys prior (Jeffreys 1998); a non-informative prior that can mitigate against biases induced by marginalising over poorly constrained nuisance parameters. When performing a joint analysis of all synthetic multipoles, we see an improvement in the level of agreement between the marginalised $\ln{\left(10^{10}A_s\right)}$ constraints and the truth; from $\sim2.0\sigma$ to $\sim0.42\sigma$. Using our pipeline to analyse the measured multipoles, we find an improvement in the level of agreement with cosmic microwave background (CMB) results; from $\sim2.4\sigma$ to $\sim0.5\sigma$. Therefore, we conclude that the spectroscopic galaxy survey datasets listed above are consistent with constraints obtained from the CMB., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. We develop a first-principles formalism to compute the distortion to the relic neutrino density field caused by the peculiar motions of large-scale structures. This distortion slows halos down due to dynamical friction, causes a local anisotropy in the neutrino-CDM cross-correlation, and reduces the global cross-correlation between neutrinos and CDM. The local anisotropy in the neutrino-CDM cross-spectrum is imprinted in the three point cross-correlations of matter and galaxies, or the bispectrum in Fourier space, producing a signal peaking at squeezed triangle configurations. This bispectrum signature of neutrino masses is not limited by cosmic variance or potential inaccuracies in the modeling of complicated nonlinear and galaxy formation physics, and it is not degenerate with the optical depth to reionization. We construct a theory of gravity in which a propagating massive vector field arises from a quadratic curvature invariant. The Einstein-Cartan formulation and a partial suppression of torsion ensure the absence of ghost and strong-coupling problems, as we prove with nonlinear Lagrangian and Hamiltonian analysis. Augmenting General Relativity with a propagating torsion vector, our theory provides a purely gravitational origin of Einstein-Proca models and constrains their parameter space. We motivate the cosmological science case of measuring Type Ia supernovae with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as part of the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. We discuss previously stated requirements for the science, and a baseline survey strategy. We discuss the various areas that must still be optimized and point to the other white papers that consider these topics in detail. Overall, the baseline case should enable an exquisite measurement of dark energy using SNe Ia from z=0.1 to z>2, and further optimization should only strengthen this once-in-a-generation experiment.

Assuming the evidence for gravitational wave background from recent data release of pulsar timing arrays to be interpreted as the scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs), we study the second and third order gravitational waves simultaneously, by jointly analyzing a combination of PTA, big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), and cosmic microwave background (CMB) datasets. The 21 cm signal from cosmic hydrogen is one of the most propitious probes of the early Universe. The detection of this signal would reveal key information about the first stars, the nature of dark matter, and early structure formation. We explore the impact of an emissive and reflective, or `hot', horizon on the recovery of this signal for global 21 cm experiments. It is demonstrated that using physically motivated foreground models to recover the sky-averaged 21 cm signal one must accurately describe the horizon around the radiometer. We show that not accounting for the horizon will lead to a signal recovery with residuals an order of magnitude larger than the injected signal, with a log Bayesian evidence of almost 1600 lower than when one does account for the horizon. It is shown that signal recovery is sensitive to incorrect values of soil temperature and reflection coefficient in describing the horizon, with even a 10% error in reflectance causing twofold increases in the RMSE of a given fit. We also show these parameters may be fitted using Bayesian inference to mitigate for these issues without overfitting and mischaracterising a non-detection. We further demonstrate that signal recovery is sensitive to errors in measurements of the horizon projection onto the sky, but fitting for soil temperature and reflection coefficients with priors that extend beyond physical expectation can resolve these problems. We show that using an expanded prior range can reliably recover the signal even when the height of the horizon is mismeasured by up to 20%, decreasing the RMSE from the model that does not perform this fitting by a factor of 9., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) of impulsive nature is created by sources like sparking on high-power transmission lines due to gap or corona discharge and automobile sparking, and it affects the entire observing frequency bands of low-frequency radio telescopes. Such RFI is a significant problem at the Upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). A real-time RFI filtering scheme has been developed and implemented to mitigate the effect on astronomical observations. The scheme works in real-time on pre-correlation data from each antenna and allows the detection of RFI based on median absolute deviation statistics. The samples are identified as RFI based on user-defined thresholds and are replaced by digital noise, a constant or zeros. We review the testing and implementation of this system at the uGMRT. We illustrate the effectiveness of the filtering for continuum, spectral line and time-domain data. The real-time filter is released for regular observations in the bands falling in 250 - 1450 MHz, and recent observing cycles show growing usage. Despite the tremendous advance of observational cosmology, the value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) is still controversial (the so called ``Hubble tension'') because of the inconsistency between local/late-time measurements and those derived from the cosmic microwave background. As the age of the Universe is very sensitive to $H_0$, we explored whether the present-day oldest stars could place independent constraints on the Hubble constant. To this purpose, we selected from the literature the oldest objects (globular clusters, stars, white dwarfs, ultra-faint and dwarf spheroidal galaxies) with accurate age estimates. Adopting a conservative prior on their formation redshifts ($11 \leq z_{\rm f} \leq 30$) and assuming $\Omega_{\rm M} = 0.3 \pm 0.02$, we developed a method based on Bayesian statistics to estimate the Hubble constant. We selected the oldest objects ($>13.3$ Gyr) and estimated $H_0$ both for each of them individually and for the average ages of homogeneous subsamples. Statistical and systematic uncertainties were properly taken into account. The constraints based on individual ages indicate that $H_0, Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. We propose a new scenario for the formation of asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBHs). Our mechanism is based on the annihilation of the string-wall network associated with the breaking of a $U(1)$ global symmetry into a discrete $Z_N$ symmetry. If the potential has multiple local minima ($N>1$) the network is stable, and the annihilation is guaranteed by a bias among the different vacua. The collapse of the string-wall network is accompanied by catastrogenesis, a large production of pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) -- e.g. axions, ALPs, or majorons -- gravitational waves, and PBHs. If pGBs rapidly decay into products that thermalize, as predicted e.g. in the high-quality QCD axion and heavy majoron models, they do not contribute to the dark matter population, but we show that PBHs can constitute 100\% of the dark matter. The gravitational wave background produced by catastrogenesis with heavy unstable axions, ALPs, or majorons could be visible in future interferometers., 24 pages, 4 figures. Galaxy peculiar velocities can be used to trace the growth of structure on cosmological scales. In the radial direction, peculiar velocities cause redshift space distortions, an established cosmological probe, and can be measured individually in the presence of an independent distance indicator. In the transverse direction, peculiar velocities cause proper motions. In this case, however, the proper motions are too small to detect on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis for any realistic experiment in the foreseeable future, but could be detected statistically in cross-correlation with other tracers of the density fluctuations. We forecast the sensitivity for a detection of transverse peculiar velocities through the cross-correlation of a proper motion survey, modelled after existing extragalactic samples measured by Gaia, and an overlaping galaxy survey. In particular, we consider a low-redshift galaxy sample, and a higher-redshift quasar sample. We find that, while the expected cosmological signal is below the expected statistical uncertainties from current data using cross-correlations, the sensitivity can improve fast with future experiments, and the threshold for detection may not be too far away in the future. Quantitatively, we find that the signal-to-noise ratio for detection is in the range $S/N\sim0.3$, with most of the signal concentrated at low redshifts $z\lesssim0.3$. If detected, this signal is sensitive to the product of the expansion and growth rates at late times, and thus would constitute an independent observable, sensitive to both background expansion and large-scale density fluctuations., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

If a light axion is present during inflation and becomes part of dark matter afterwards, its quantum fluctuations contribute to dark matter isocurvature. In this article, we introduce a whole new suite of cosmological observables for axion isocurvature, which could help test the presence of axions, as well as its coupling to the inflaton and other heavy spectator fields during inflation such as the radial mode of the Peccei-Quinn field. They include correlated clock signals in the curvature and isocurvature spectra, and mixed cosmological-collider non-Gaussianities involving both curvature and isocurvature fluctuations with shapes and running unconstrained by the current data. Taking into account of the existing strong constraints on axion isocurvature fluctuations from the CMB, these novel signals could still be sizable and potentially observable. In late 2014, four images of Supernova (SN) "Refsdal," the first known example of a strongly lensed SN with multiple resolved images, were detected in the MACS J1149 galaxy-cluster field. Following the images' discovery, the SN was predicted to reappear within hundreds of days at a new position ~8 arcseconds away in the field. The observed reappearance in late 2015 makes it possible to carry out Refsdal's (1964) original proposal to use a multiply imaged SN to measure the Hubble constant H0, since the time delay between appearances should vary inversely with H0. Moreover, the position, brightness, and timing of the reappearance enable a novel test of the blind predictions of galaxy-cluster models, which are typically constrained only by the positions of multiply imaged galaxies. We have developed a new photometry pipeline that uses DOLPHOT to measure the fluxes of the five images of SN Refsdal from difference images. We apply four separate techniques to perform a blind measurement of the relative time delays and magnification ratios (mu_i/mu_1) between the last image SX and the earlier images S1-S4. We measure the relative time delay of SX-S1 to be 376.0+5.6-5.5 days and the relative magnification to be 0.30+0.05-0.03. This corresponds to a 1.5% precision on the time delay and 17% precision for the magnification ratios, and includes uncertainties due to millilensing and microlensing.
