We use a sample of 4178 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 3, 4 and 5 in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field to investigate the relationship between the observed slope of the stellar continuum emission in the ultraviolet, ��, and the thermal dust emission, as quantified via the so-called 'infrared excess' (IRX = LIR/LUV). Through a stacking analysis we directly measure the 850-��m flux density of LBGs in our deep (0.9mJy) James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) SCUBA-2 850-��m map, as well as deep public Herschel/SPIRE 250-, 350- and 500-��m imaging. We establish functional forms for the IRX-�� relation to z ~ 5, confirming that there is no significant redshift evolution of the relation and that the resulting average IRX-�� curve is consistent with a Calzetti-like attenuation law. We compare our results with recent work in the literature, finding that discrepancies in the slope of the IRX-�� relation are driven by biases in the methodology used to determine the ultraviolet slopes. Consistent results are found when IRX-�� is evaluated by stacking in bins of stellar mass, M, and we argue that the near-linear IRX-M relationship is a better proxy for correcting observed UV luminosities to total star formation rates, provided an accurate handle on M can be had, and also gives clues as to the physical driver of the role of dust-obscured star formation in high-redshift galaxies., 12 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the multi-wavelength properties of a sample of 450-��m selected sources from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS). A total of 69 sources were identified above 4�� in deep SCUBA-2 450-��m observations overlapping the UDS and COSMOS fields and covering 210 sq. arcmin to a typical depth of ��450=1.5 mJy. Reliable cross identification are found for 58 sources (84 per cent) in Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/IR data. The photometric redshift distribution (dN/dz) of 450��m-selected sources is presented, showing a broad peak in the redshift range 1=10^12 +/- 0.8 L_sol, =42 +/- 11 K and =1.6 +/- 0.5, respectively. The relationship between these SED parameters and the physical properties of galaxies is investigated, revealing correlations between T_D and LIR and between ��_D and both stellar mass and effective radius. The connection between star formation rate and stellar mass is explored, with 24 per cent of 450 ��m sources found to be ``star-bursts'', i.e. displaying anomalously high specific SFRs. However, both the number density and observed properties of these ``star-burst'' galaxies are found consistent with the population of normal star-forming galaxies., 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the environments of both X-ray and radio-loud AGN within the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS) using deep infrared selection to sample the galaxy density field in the redshift range 1.0 ~ 10^13 M_sun. A closer look at the small-scale environments of the AGN reveals that the neighbouring galaxies of radio-loud AGN have U-B colours more skewed towards the `green-valley' and the red sequence, whereas the neighbours of X-ray AGN show no difference to the general galaxy population. This suggests that although both AGN types live in overdense environments, the radio-loud AGN may be preferentially located in more evolved cluster cores, in a similar environment to low-powered radio AGN in the local Universe., 12 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present spectroscopic confirmation of ten highly luminous (L >= 2L*) Lyman alpha emitters in the redshift range 6.01= 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) selected from an area of 0.25 square degrees within the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS). Overall, our high rate of spectroscopic confirmation (>= 71%) and low rate of contamination provides a strong vindication of the photometric redshift analysis used to define the original sample. By considering star-formation rate estimates based on the Ly_alpha and UV continuum luminosity we conclude that our sample is consistent with a Ly_alpha escape fraction of ~25%. Moreover, after careful consideration of the potential uncertainties and biases, we find that 40%-50% of our sample of L >= 2L* galaxies at 6.0= 25 Angs), a fraction which is a factor of ~2 higher than previously reported for L =2 L*) LBGs shows a similarly sharp increase to that observed in their lower-luminosity (L, accepted by MNRAS, 13 pages, 7 figures

We present a study of galaxy environments to z~2, based on a sample of over 33,000 K-band selected galaxies detected in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). The combination of infrared depth and area in the UDS allows us to extend previous studies of galaxy environment to z>1 without the strong biases associated with optical galaxy selection. We study the environments of galaxies divided by rest frame (U-B) colours, in addition to `passive' and `star-forming' subsets based on template fitting. We have analysed a sample of 1292 4.5 micron-selected galaxies at z>=3, over 0.6 square degrees of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey (UKIDSS) Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Using photometry from the U band through 4.5 microns, we have obtained photometric redshifts and derived stellar masses for our sources. Only two of our galaxies potentially lie at z>5. We have studied the galaxy stellar mass function at 3 10^11 Msun galaxies increased by a factor > 10 between z=5 and 3, indicating that the assembly rate of these galaxies proceeded > 20 times faster at these redshifts than at 0 10^11 Msun galaxies would be missed by optical surveys with R, 16 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We present an analysis of the X-ray point source populations in 182 Chandra images of galaxy clusters at z>0.1 with exposure time >10 ksec, as well as 44 non-cluster fields. Analysis of the number and flux of these sources, using a detailed pipeline to predict the distribution of non-cluster sources in each field, reveals an excess of X-ray point sources associated with the galaxy clusters. This paper investigates the clustering properties of a complete sample of 1041 24um-selected sources brighter than F[24um]=400 uJy in the overlapping region between the SWIRE and UKIDSS UDS surveys. We have concentrated on the two (photometric) interval ranges z=[0.6-1.2] (low-z sample) and z>1.6 (high-z sample) as it is in these regions were we expect the mid-IR population to be dominated by intense dust-enshrouded activity such as star formation and black hole accretion. Investigations of the angular correlation function produce a correlation length are r0~15.9 Mpc for the high-z sample and r0~8.5 Mpc for the low-z one. Comparisons with physical models reveal that the high-z sources are exclusively associated with very massive (M>~10^{13} M_sun)haloes, comparable to those which locally host groups-to-clusters of galaxies, and are very common within such (rare) structures. Conversely, lower-z galaxies are found to reside in smaller halos (M_min~10^{12} M_sun) and to be very rare in such systems. While recent studies have determined a strong evolution of the 24um luminosity function between z~2 and z~0, they cannot provide information on the physical nature of such an evolution. Our clustering results instead indicate that this is due to the presence of different populations of objects inhabiting different structures, as active systems at z, Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We present an XMM-Newton observation of the radio galaxy 4C 23.56 at z=2.48 which reveals extended X-ray emission coincident with the radio lobes spanning \~0.5 Mpc. These are the largest X-ray-bright lobes known at z>2. Under the assumption that these features result from inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by relativistic electrons in the radio source lobes, the measured luminosity of L_0.5-8 keV=7.5x10^44 erg s^-1 implies a minimum energy stored within the lobes of ~10^59 erg. We present high-resolution imaging of a sample of 10 SCUBA submillimetre galaxies, obtained using the ACS camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that the majority show compact, disturbed morphologies. Using quantitative morphological classification, we find that at least 6 are classified as major mergers. Simulations suggest that the morphological parameters are unlike local spirals and ellipticals, but similar to those of local ULIRGs. Compared to Lyman-break galaxies, the submillimetre-selected galaxies are on average more asymmetric, but also significantly more concentrated in their light distributions. This is consistent with a higher fraction of the stellar mass being contained within a central spheroid component. Despite their different morphologies, we find that submm galaxies are similar in size to luminous (>~L*) Lyman-break galaxies, with half-light radii in the range 2.8 - 4.6kpc., 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS. We report on the first SCUBA detection of a Type 2 QSO at z=3.660 in the Chandra Deep Field South. This source is X-ray absorbed, shows only narrow emission lines in the optical spectrum and is detected in the sub-mm: it is the ideal candidate in an evolution scheme for AGN (e.g. Fabian (1999); Page et al. (2004)) of an early phase corresponding to the main growth of the host galaxy and formation of the central black hole. The overall photometry (from the radio to the X-ray energy band) of this source is well reproduced by the spectral energy distribution (SED) of NGC 6240, while it is incompatible with the spectrum of a Type 1 QSO (3C273) or a starburst galaxy (Arp 220). Its sub-mm (850 \mu m) to X-ray (2 keV) spectral slope (alpha_SX) is close to the predicted value for a Compton-thick AGN in which only 1% of the nuclear emission emerges through scattering. Using the observed flux at 850 \mu m we have derived a SFR=550--680 M$_odot/yr and an estimate of the dust mass, M$_dust=4.2 10^8 M_odot, Comment: 6 Pages, 5 Figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

It is becoming clear that luminous extragalactic X-ray and sub-mm sources are essentially distinct populations. Thus, if high redshift sub-mm sources represent massive spheroids in formation, there must be a time lag between the major epoch of star-formation and the appearance of a visible quasar. Despite this distinction, I find tentative evidence for a puzzling angular cross-correlation between X-ray sources and bright sub-mm sources in two independent fields. Despite extensive observational efforts, the brightest sub--mm source in the Hubble Deep Field, HDF850.1, has failed to yield a convincing optical/infrared identification almost 4 years after its discovery. This failure is all the more notable given the availability of supporting multi-frequency data of unparalleled depth, and sub-arcsec positional accuracy for the sub-mm/mm source. Consequently, HDF850.1 has become a test case of the possibility that the most violently star-forming objects in the universe are too red and/or distant to be seen in the deepest optical images. Here we report the discovery of the host galaxy of HDF850.1. This object has been revealed by careful analysis of a new, deep K-prime image of the HDF obtained with the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. Its reality is confirmed by a similar analysis of the HST NICMOS F160W image of the same region. This object is extremely faint (K=23.5), clumpy (on sub-arcsec scales) and very red (I-K > 5.2; H-K = 1.4 +- 0.35). The likelihood that it is the correct identification is strongly reinforced by a reanalysis of the combined MERLIN+VLA 1.4-GHz map of the field which yields a new radio detection of HDF850.1 only 0.1 arcsec from the new near-ir counterpart, and with sufficient positional accuracy to exclude all previously considered alternative optical candidates. We have calculated new confidence limits on the estimated redshift of HDF850.1 and find z = 4.1 +- 0.5. We also calculate that the flux density of HDF850.1 has been boosted by a factor of ~3 through lensing by the intervening elliptical 3-586.0, consistent with predictions that a small but significant fraction of blank-field sub-mm sources are lensed by foreground galaxies. We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of the 19 most significant sub-mm sources detected in the SCUBA 8-mJy survey. As described in Scott et al. (2001), this survey covers ~260 arcmin^2 using the sub-millimetre camera SCUBA, to a limiting source detection limit S(850um) ~ 8 mJy. One advantage of this relatively bright flux-density limit is that accurate astrometric positions are potentially achievable for every source using existing radio and/or mm-wave interferometers. However, an associated advantage is that SED-based redshift constraints should be more powerful than in fainter sub-mm surveys. Here we therefore exploit the parallel SCUBA 450um data, in combination with existing radio and ISO data at longer and shorter wavelengths to set constraints on the redshift of each source. We also analyse new and existing optical and near-infrared imaging of our SCUBA survey fields to select potential identifications consistent with these constraints. Our derived SED-based redshift constraints, and the lack of statistically significant associations with even moderately bright galaxies allow us to conclude that all 19 sources lie at z > 1, and at least half of them apparently lie at z > 2., 14 pages (including 30 figures and 4 tables) accepted by MNRAS.
