Search

(Abridged) Quantitative three-dimensional (3D) position and velocity estimates obtained by passive radar will assist the Galileo Project in the detection and classification of aerial objects by providing critical measurements of range, location, and kinematics. These parameters will be combined with those derived from the Project{\textquoteright}s suite of electromagnetic sensors and used to separate known aerial objects from those exhibiting anomalous kinematics. SkyWatch, a passive multistatic radar system based on commercial broadcast FM radio transmitters of opportunity, is a network of receivers spaced at geographical scales that enables estimation of the 3D position and velocity time series of objects at altitudes up to 80km, horizontal distances up to 150km, and at velocities to {\textpm}2{\textpm}2km/s ({\textpm}6{\textpm}6Mach). The receivers are designed to collect useful data in a variety of environments varying by terrain, transmitter power, relative transmitter distance, adjacent channel strength, etc. In some cases, the direct signal from the transmitter may be large enough to be used as the reference with which the echoes are correlated. In other cases, the direct signal may be weak or absent, in which case a reference is communicated to the receiver from another network node via the internet for echo correlation. Various techniques are discussed specific to the two modes of operation and a hybrid mode. Delay and Doppler data are sent via internet to a central server where triangulation is used to deduce time series of 3D positions and velocities. We propose possible properties of quantum gravity in de Sitter space, and find that they relate the value of the cosmological constant to parameters of the Standard Model. In de Sitter space we suggest (i) that the most sharply defined observables are obtained by scattering objects from the horizon and back to the horizon and (ii) that black holes of discrete charge are well defined states in the theory. For a black hole of minimal discrete electric charge, we therefore demand that a scattering process involving the black hole and a probe can take place within a Hubble time before evaporating away, so that the state of a discretely charged black hole is well defined. By imposing that the black hole's charge is in principle detectable, which involves appreciably altering the state of a scattered electron, we derive a relation between the Hubble scale, or cosmological constant, and the electron's mass and charge and order one coefficients that describe our ignorance of the full microscopic theory. This gives the prediction $\Lambda \sim 10^{-123 \pm 2} M_{Pl}^4$, which includes the observed value of dark energy. The local detection rate of interstellar objects can allow for estimations of the total number of similar objects bound by the Milky Way thin disk. If interstellar objects of artificial origin are discovered, the estimated total number of objects can be lower by a factor of about $10^{16}$ if they target the habitable zone around the Sun. We propose a model for calculating the quantity of natural or artificial interstellar objects of interest based on the object's velocity and observed density. We then apply the model to the case of chemically propelled rockets from extraterrestrial civilizations. We illustrate a novel signature of black hole binaries from their effect on the kinematics of water maser emission in their environments. With the help of simulations, we establish the condition for clumps to mase based on their coherence lengths calibrated to those of the known maser galaxy NGC 4258. This is then used to identify masing clumps around a binary black hole system, and quantify the kinematic and spectral differences relative to the single black hole case. For some generic circumstances, blue-shifted masers around a binary black hole are found to preferentially follow the Keplerian rotation curve observed in the single black hole case. The redshifted ones, however, are found to visibly deviate from this relation, and also display more scatter with a tendency towards lower absolute values of the velocity along the line-of-sight. The spectrum of the masers as a function of line-of-sight velocity also shows a double peaked structure, reminiscent of recent observations of systems such as Mrk 1. The idea of ultralight scalar (axion) dark matter is theoretically appealing and may resolve some small-scale problems of cold dark matter; so it deserves careful attention. In this work we carefully analyze tunneling of the scalar field in dwarf satellites due to the tidal gravitational force from the host halo. The tidal force is far from spherically symmetric; causing tunneling along the axis from the halo center to the dwarf, while confining in the orthogonal plane. We decompose the wave function into a spherical term plus higher harmonics, integrate out angles, and then numerically solve a residual radial Schr\"odinger-Poisson system. By demanding that the core of the Fornax dwarf halo can survive for at least the age of the universe places a bound on the dark matter particle mass $2\times 10^{-22}\,\mbox{eV}\lesssim m\lesssim 6\times 10^{-22}\,$eV. Interestingly, we show that if another very low density halo is seen, then it rules out the ultralight scalar as core proposal completely. Furthermore, the non-condensed particles likely impose an even sharper lower bound. In this paper, we review some of the extant literature on the study of interstellar objects (ISOs). With the forthcoming Vera C. Rubin Telescope and Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), we find that $0.38 - 84$ `Oumuamua-like interstellar objects are expected to be detected in the next 10 years, with 95\% confidence. The feasibility of a rendezvous trajectory has been demonstrated in previous work. In this paper, we investigate the requirements for a rendezvous mission with the primary objective of producing a resolved image of an interstellar object. We outline the rendezvous distances necessary as a function of resolution elements and object size. We expand upon current population synthesis models to account for the size dependency on the detection rates for reachable interstellar objects. We assess the trade-off between object diameter and occurrence rate, and conclude that objects with the size range between a third of the size and the size of `Oumuamua will be optimal targets for an imaging rendezvous. Recent debates around the testability of the inflationary paradigm raise the question of how to model-independently discriminate it from competing scenarios. We argue that a detection of the Cosmic Graviton Background (CGB), the relic radiation from gravitons decoupling around the Planck time, would rule out the inflationary paradigm, as realistic inflationary models would dilute the CGB to an unobservable level. The CGB contribution to the effective number of relativistic species, $\Delta N_{{\rm eff},g} \approx 0.054$, is well within the reach of next-generation cosmological probes. We argue that detecting the high-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background associated to the CGB will be challenging but potentially feasible. We study the newly released light curve from the fireball of the first interstellar meteor CNEOS 2014-01-08. The measured velocity and three observed flares down to an altitude of $18.7 \mathrm{\; km}$ imply ambient ram pressure in the range of $113-194$ MPa when the meteor disintegrated. The required yield strength is $\gtrsim 20$ times higher than stony meteorites and $\gtrsim 2$ times larger than iron meteorites. The implied slowdown in the atmosphere suggests an initial speed of about $66.5 \; {\rm km~s^{-1}}$, strengthening the case for an interstellar origin of this meteor and making it an outlier relative to the velocity dispersion of local stars., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; accepted for publication in RNAAS

I show that the quadrupole of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) evolves more rapidly than previously expected, as a result of the acceleration of the Sun towards the Galactic center. The acceleration, measured most recently by Gaia EDR3, implies a fractional change in the quadrupole of ~10^{-9} per year, an order of magnitude larger than expected from the evolution in the last scattering surface of the CMB., Comment: 3 pages, submitted to an AAS Journal

More than $200$ quasars have been detected so far at $z > 6$, with only one showing clear signs of strong gravitational lensing. Some studies call for a missing population of lensed high-$z$ quasars, but their existence is still in doubt. A large fraction of high-$z$ quasars being lensed would have a significant effect on the shape of the intrinsic quasar luminosity function (QLF). Here, we perform the first systematic search for lensed X-ray-detected quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$ employing a Bayesian analysis, with the code BAYMAX, to look for morphological evidence of multiple images that may escape a visual inspection. We analyzed a sample of 22 quasars at $z > 5.8$ imaged by the Chandra X-ray observatory and found none with statistically significant multiple images. In the sub-sample of the 8 sources with photon counts $>20$ we exclude multiple images with separations $r>1''$ and count ratios $f>0.4$, or with separations as small as $0.''7$ and $f>0.7$ at $95\%$ confidence level. Comparing this non-detection with predictions from theoretical models suggesting a high and a low lensed fraction, we placed upper limits on the bright-end slope, $β$, of the QLF. Using only the sub-sample with 8 sources, we obtain, in the high-lensing model, a limit $β< 3.38$. Assuming no multiple source is present in the full sample of 22 sources, we obtain $β< 2.89$ and $β< 3.53$ in the high and low lensing models, respectively. The Doppler effect is commonly used to infer the velocity difference between stars based on the relative shifts in the rest-frame wavelengths of their spectral features. In wide binaries, the difference in gravitational redshift from the surfaces of the constituent stars with distinct compactness dominates at separations above 0.01 pc. I suggest that this effect became apparent for wide pairs in the Gaia eDR3 catalogue but incorrectly interpreted as a possible modification of Newtonian gravity in the internal kinematics of very wide binaries., Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in RNAAS

Since the first signal in 2015, the gravitational-wave detections of merging binary black holes (BBHs) by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations (LVC) have completely transformed our understanding of the lives and deaths of compact object binaries, and have motivated an enormous amount of theoretical work on the astrophysical origin of these objects. We show that the phenomenological fit to the redshift-dependent merger rate of BBHs from Abbott et al. (2020) is consistent with a purely dynamical origin for these objects, and that the current merger rate of BBHs from the LVC could be explained entirely with globular clusters alone. While this does not prove that globular clusters are the dominant formation channel, we emphasize that many formation scenarios could contribute a significant fraction of the current LVC rate, and that any analysis that assumes a single (or dominant) mechanism for producing BBH mergers is implicitly using a specious astrophysical prior., Comment: 4 pages, one figure, matches version in RNAAS

We illustrate the observability of the end stages of the earliest (Population III) stars at high redshifts $z \gtrsim 10$, using the recently observed transient, GN-z11-flash as an example. We find that the observed spectrum of this transient is consistent with its originating from a shock-breakout in a Population III supernova occurring in the GN-z11 galaxy at $z \sim 11$. The energetics of the explosion indicate a progenitor star of mass $\sim 300 M_{\odot}$ in that galaxy, with of order unity such events expected over an observing timescale of a few years. We forecast the expected number of such transients from $z > 10$ galaxies as a function of their host stellar mass and star formation rate. We study the effects of including a nonzero positron-to-electron fraction in emitting plasma on the polarized SEDs and sub-millimeter images of jet and accretion flow models for near-horizon emission from M87* and Sgr A*. For M87*, we consider a semi-analytic fit to the force-free plasma regions of a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic jet simulation which we populate with power-law leptons with a constant electron-to-magnetic pressure ratio. For Sgr A*, we consider a standard self-similar radiatively inefficient accretion flow where the emission is predominantly from thermal leptons with a small fraction in a power-law tail. In both models, we fix the positron-to-electron ratio throughout the emission region. We generate polarized images and spectra from our models using the general-relativistic ray tracing and radiative transfer from GRTRANS. We find that a substantial positron fraction reduces the circular polarization fraction at infrared and higher frequencies. However, in sub-millimeter images higher positron fractions increase polarization fractions due to strong effects of Faraday conversion. We find a M87* jet model that best matches the available broadband total intensity and 230 GHz polarization data is a sub-equipartition, with positron fraction of $\simeq$ 10%. We show that jet models with significant positron fractions do not satisfy the polarimetric constraints at 230 GHz from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Sgr A* models show similar trends in their polarization fractions with increasing pair fraction. Both models suggest that resolved, polarized EHT images are useful to constrain the presence of pairs at 230 GHz emitting regions of M87* and Sgr A*., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, accepted to ApJ

The upcoming commencement of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space of Time (LSST) will greatly enhance the discovery rate of interstellar objects (ISOs). `Oumuamua and Borisov were the first two ISOs confirmed in the Solar system, although the first interstellar meteor may have been discovered earlier. We discuss the properties of `Oumuamua and Borisov and explore the expected abundance of ISOs as a function of size in the solar neighborhood. We compare the expected abundance of ISOs to that of objects in the Oort cloud, and draw conclusions about the mass budget per star that is required to produce ISOs. We also investigate the possibility of ISOs being captured into bound orbits within the solar system, both from its birth star cluster and in the field. We examine the potential for ISOs to transport prebiotic or biotic material between planetary systems. We consider signatures of ISOs colliding with the Earth, the Moon, and neutron stars, as well as the possibility of differentiating ISOs from solar system objects in stellar occultation surveys. Finally, we discuss advantages that the imminent advent of LSST will afford the field of ISO studies, including large-number statistics that will reveal the origins of ISOs and discoveries of rare ISOs providing insights into exotic phenomena. It is shown that a gravitationally bound system with a one-dimensional velocity dispersion sigma can at most dissipate a fraction ~36(sigma/c)^3 of the gravitational wave energy propagating through it, even if their dynamical time is shorter than the wave period. The limit is saturated for particles with a mean-free-path equal to the size of the system, such as hot protons in galaxy clusters, strongly-interacting dark matter particles in halos, or massive black holes in clusters. Planet Nine has been proposed to potentially be a black hole in the outer solar system. We investigate the accretion flares that would result from impacts of small Oort cloud objects, and find that the upcoming LSST observing program will be able to either rule out or confirm Planet Nine as a black hole within a year. We also find that LSST could rule out or confirm the existence of trapped planet-mass black holes out to the edge of the Oort cloud, indirectly probing the dark matter fraction in subsolar mass black holes and potentially improving upon current limits by orders of magnitude., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

Several large-scale experimental facilities and space-missions are being suggested to probe the universe across the gravitational-wave (GW) spectrum. Here we propose Gravitational-wave Lunar Observatory for Cosmology (GLOC) - the first concept design in the NASA Artemis era for a GW observatory on the Moon. Using feasible interferometer technologies, we find that a lunar-based observatory is ideal for probing GW frequencies in the range between deci-Hz to 5 Hz, an astrophysically rich regime that is very challenging for both Earth- and space-based detectors. GLOC can survey binaries with neutron stars, stellar and intermediate-mass black holes to $\gtrsim 70\%$ of the observable volume of our universe without significant background contamination. The sensitivity at $\mathcal{O}(1~\mathrm{Hz})$ allows a unique window into calibrating Type Ia supernovae. Here, we show that the detection of Borisov implies that interstellar objects outnumber Solar system objects in the Oort cloud, whereas the reverse is true near the Sun due to the stronger gravitational focusing of bound objects. This hypothesis can be tested with stellar occultation surveys of the Oort cloud. Black holes across a broad range of masses play a key role in the evolution of galaxies. The initial seeds of black holes formed at $z \sim 30$ and grew over cosmic time by gas accretion and mergers. Using observational data for quasars and theoretical models for the hierarchical assembly of dark matter halos, we study the relative importance of gas accretion and mergers for black hole growth, as a function of redshift ($0 10^8 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $z>6$; and (ii) growth by mergers is dominant at $M_{\bullet} < 10^5 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $z>5.5$, and at $M_{\bullet} > 10^8 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $z, Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. The LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) recently reported the detection of GW190814, a merger of a $23^{+1.0}_{-0.9}~M_{\odot}$ primary black hole (BH), and a $2.6^{+0.08}_{-0.08}~M_{\odot}$ secondary. The secondary's mass falls into the mass-gap regime, which refers to the scarcity of compact objects in the mass range of 2-5 $M_{\odot}$. The first clue to the formation of the GW190814 lies in the fact that the primary is a very massive BH. We suggest that the secondary was born as a neutron star (NS) where a significant amount of the supernova ejecta mass from its formation remained bound to the binary due to the presence of the massive BH companion. The bound mass forms a circumbinary accretion disk, and its accretion onto the NS created a mass-gap object. In this scenario, LIGO/Virgo will only detect mass-gap objects in binary mergers with an extreme mass ratio. We also predict a correlation between the mass of the secondary and the mass of the primary in such asymmetric mergers. In this paper, we explore from a conceptual standpoint the possibility of using natural astrophysical sources to accelerate spacecrafts to relativistic speeds. We focus on light sails and electric sails, which are reliant on momentum transfer from photons and protons, respectively, because these two classes of spacecrafts are not required to carry fuel on board. The payload is assumed to be stationed near the astrophysical source, and the sail is subsequently unfolded and activated when the source is functional. By considering a number of astrophysical objects such as massive stars, microquasars, supernovae, pulsar wind nebulae, and active galactic nuclei, we show that terminal speeds approaching the speed of light might be realizable under idealized circumstances provided that sufficiently advanced sail materials and control techniques exist. We also investigate the constraints arising from the sail's material properties, the voyage through the ambient source environment, and the passage through the interstellar medium. While all of these considerations pose significant challenges to spacecrafts, our analysis indicates that they are not insurmountable in optimal conditions. Stellar winds shape the evolution of stars through the loss of mass. In binary systems, they also shape the stars' evolution by modifying the orbit. In this paper, we use hydrodynamic simulations to study the emergence of nearly-isothermal winds from identical-twin binaries. We vary the degree to which model stars fill their Roche lobes and the temperature of the wind. Initialized at rest on the stellar surfaces, winds accelerate away from the binary components through a sonic surface to supersonic outward velocities. In cases where the binary fills its Roche lobe, a shared subsonic region surrounds both components. We find that mass loss rates from close twin-star binaries are enhanced relative to the expectation from two single-object winds. This binary enhancement is best modeled as a function of the ratio of wind velocity to orbital velocity. Similarly, we find that the specific angular momentum with which winds emerge can vary between that of the binary components and that of the outer Lagrange points depending on the ratio of wind velocity to orbital velocity. Given that mass and angular momentum loss can be modeled as simple functions of wind velocity, our results may be broadly applicable to the evolution of close, equal-mass binaries. We employ holographic duality to compute $\langle T_{\mu \nu} \rangle$ in strongly coupled $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and then study evolution of the semiclassical Einstein field equations sourced by $\langle T_{\mu \nu} \rangle$. Linearizing about de Sitter space, we find that the semiclassical equations of motion reduce to a four dimensional scalar wave equation coupled to a five dimensional scalar wave equation. We compute the mode spectrum of these equations and find that there exists a critical value of the Hubble constant $H_c$ for which de Sitter space is unstable when $H < H_c$ and mode stable when $H > H_c$., Comment: 11 pages, one figure, clarifications added in v2

The first and second Gravitational Wave Transient Catalogs by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration include $50$ confirmed merger events from the first, second, and first half of the third observational runs. We compute the distribution of recoil kicks imparted to the merger remnants and estimate their retention probability within various astrophysical environments as a function of the maximum progenitor spin ($\chi_{\rm max}$), assuming that the LIGO/Virgo binary black hole (BBH) mergers were catalyzed by dynamical assembly in a dense star cluster. We find that the distributions of average recoil kicks are peaked at about $150$ km s$^{-1}$, $250$ km s$^{-1}$, $350$ km s$^{-1}$, $600$ km s$^{-1}$, for maximum progenitor spins of $0.1$, $0.3$, $0.5$, $0.8$, respectively. Only environments with escape speed $\gtrsim 100$ km s$^{-1}$, as found in galactic nuclear star clusters as well as in the most massive globular clusters and super star clusters, could efficiently retain the merger remnants of the LIGO/Virgo BBH population even for low progenitor spins ($\chi_{\rm max}=0.1$). In the case of high progenitor spins ($\chi_{\rm max}\gtrsim 0.5$), only the most massive nuclear star clusters can retain the merger products. We also show that the estimated values of the effective spin and of the remnant spin of GW170729, GW190412, GW190519, and GW190620 can be reproduced if their progenitors were moderately spinning ($\chi_{\rm max}\gtrsim 0.3$), while for GW190517 if the progenitors were rapidly spinning ($\chi_{\rm max}\gtrsim 0.8$). LIGO and Virgo have reported the detection of GW190521, from the merger of a binary black hole (BBH) with a total mass around $150$ M$_\odot$. While current stellar models limit the mass of any black hole (BH) remnant to about $40 - 50$ M$_\odot$, more massive BHs can be produced dynamically through repeated mergers in the core of a dense star cluster. The process is limited by the recoil kick (due to anisotropic emission of gravitational radiation) imparted to merger remnants, which can escape the parent cluster, thereby terminating growth. We study the role of the host cluster metallicity and escape speed in the buildup of massive BHs through repeated mergers. Almost independent of host metallicity, we find that a BBH of about $150$ M$_\odot$ could be formed dynamically in any star cluster with escape speed $\gtrsim 200$ km s$^{-1}$, as found in galactic nuclear star clusters as well as the most massive globular clusters and super star clusters. Using an inspiral-only waveform, we compute the detection probability for different primary masses ($\ge 60$ M$_\odot$) as a function of secondary mass and find that the detection probability increases with secondary mass and decreases for larger primary mass and redshift. Future additional detections of massive BBH mergers will be of fundamental importance for understanding the growth of massive BHs through dynamics and the formation of intermediate-mass BHs., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ Lett

Binary systems undergoing unstable Roche Lobe overflow spill gas into their circumbinary environment as their orbits decay toward coalescence. In this paper, we use a suite of hydrodynamic models of coalescing binaries involving an extended donor and a more compact accretor. We focus on the period of unstable Roche Lobe overflow that ends as the accretor plunges within the envelope of the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. During this stage, mass is removed from the donor and flung into the circumbinary environment. Across a wide range of binary mass ratios, we find that the mass expelled as the separation decreases from the Roche limit to the donor's original radius is of the order of 25% of the accretor's mass. We study the kinematics of this ejecta and its dependencies on binary properties and find that it assembles into a toroidal circumbinary distribution. These circumbinary tori have approximately constant specific angular momentum due to momentum transport by spiral shocks launched from the orbiting binary. We show that an analytic model with these torus properties captures many of the main features of the azimuthally-averaged profiles of our hydrodynamic simulations. Stellar engines are hypothesized megastructures that extract energy from the host star, typically with the purpose of generating thrust and accelerating the stellar system. We explore the maximum potential speeds that could be realizable by stellar engines, and determine that speeds up to $\sim 0.1\,c$ might perhaps be attainable under optimal conditions. In contrast, natural astrophysical phenomena in the Milky Way are very unlikely to produce such speeds. Hence, astrometric surveys of hypervelocity stars may be utilized to conduct commensal searches for high-speed stellar engines in the Milky Way. The presence of a liquid solvent is widely regarded as an essential prerequisite for habitability. We investigate the conditions under which worlds outside the habitable zones of stars are capable of supporting liquid solvents on their surface over geologically significant timescales via combined radiogenic and primordial heat. Our analysis suggests that super-Earths with radionuclide abundances that are $\gtrsim 10^3$ times higher than Earth can host long-lived water oceans. In contrast, the requirements for long-lived ethane oceans, which have been explored in the context of alternative biochemistries, are less restrictive: relative radionuclide abundances of $\gtrsim 10^2$ could be sufficient. We find that this class of worlds might be detectable ($10\sigma$ detection over $\sim 10$ days integration time at $12.8$ $\mu$m) in principle by the James Webb Space Telescope at distances of $\sim 10$ pc if their ages are $\lesssim 1$ Gyr., Comment: 7 pages; 4 figures

Nuclear star clusters that surround supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei are among the densest systems in the Universe, harbouring millions of stars and compact objects (COs). Within a few parsecs from the SMBH, stars can form binaries. In this paper, we model the supernova (SN) process of massive binaries that are born in proximity of the SMBH and that produce CO binaries. These binaries can later merge via emission of gravitational waves as a consequence of the Lidov-Kozai mechanism. We study the dynamical evolution of these systems by means of high-precision $N$-body simulations, including post-Newtonian (PN) terms up to 2.5PN order. We adopt different prescriptions for the natal velocity kicks imparted during the SN processes and find that larger kicks lead to more compact binaries that merge closer to the SMBH. We also conclude that most of the mergers enter the LIGO band with very high eccentricities. Finally, we compute a merger rate of $0.05$--$0.07\ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, $0.04$--$2\times 10^{-3}\ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, $9.6\times 10^{-6}$--$2.7\times 10^{-3}\ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ for BH-BH, BH-NS, NS-NS, respectively, smaller than the actual LIGO-Virgo observed rate., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted by JCAP

The first hours following a neutron star merger are considered to provide several ultraviolet (UV)/optical/near-infrared signals: β-decay emission from free neutrons, radioactive decay of shocked heavy elements in the cocoon and cocoon’s cooling emission. Here, we consider two additional emission sources: β-decay of free neutrons in the cocoon and synchrotron by the β-decay electrons. We present three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jets that propagate in a multi-layer ejecta from the merger and calculate semi-analytically the resulting light curves. We find that the free neutrons emission at high latitudes is enhanced by the cocoon by a factor of a few to power a wide (≲60°) and brief (∼1 h) UV signal that can reach an absolute magnitude of ≳−15, comparable with the cooling emission. If the ejected neutron matter mass is $M_{\rm n} \gtrsim 10^{-4}\, {\rm M_{\odot }}$, the synchrotron emission may yield a long (∼8 h) quasi-isotropic UV/optical signal with an absolute magnitude between −12 and −15, depending on the magnetic field. Such a high mass of a mildly relativistic component may partly obscure the cocoon’s shocked r-process elements, thereby attenuating its radioactive decay emission. Future observations on these time-scales, including null detections, may place constraints on the ejected neutron matter mass and shed light on the ejecta and jet-cocoon characteristics.

We propose that collisions between neutron stars and interstellar asteroids, such as `Oumuamua, could power observable radio flares in the Milky Way galaxy. Most known terrestrial planets orbit small stars with radii less than 60% that of the Sun. Theoretical models predict that these planets are more vulnerable to atmospheric loss than their counterparts orbiting Sun-like stars. To determine whether a thick atmosphere has survived on a small planet, one approach is to search for signatures of atmospheric heat redistribution in its thermal phase curve. Previous phase curve observations of the super-Earth 55 Cancri e (1.9 Earth radii) showed that its peak brightness is offset from the substellar point $-$ possibly indicative of atmospheric circulation. Here we report a phase curve measurement for the smaller, cooler planet LHS 3844b, a 1.3 Earth radius world in an 11-hour orbit around a small, nearby star. The observed phase variation is symmetric and has a large amplitude, implying a dayside brightness temperature of $1040\pm40$ kelvin and a nightside temperature consistent with zero kelvin (at one standard deviation). Thick atmospheres with surface pressures above 10 bar are ruled out by the data (at three standard deviations), and less-massive atmospheres are unstable to erosion by stellar wind. The data are well fitted by a bare rock model with a low Bond albedo (lower than 0.2 at two standard deviations). We investigate secular evolution in hierarchical quadruple systems as a formation channel of mass-gap black holes (with masses of about $3-5$ $M_{\odot}$) in systems that will eventually lead to binary black hole mergers detectable by ground-based gravitational wave detectors (LIGO/Virgo). We show that in a 3+1 hierarchical system, two episodes of induced mergers would first cause two neutron stars to merge and form a mass-gap black hole, which will subsequently merge with another (more massive) black hole through a second induced merger. We demonstrate that such systems are stable to flybys, and their formation would predict a high mass ratio and eccentric merger of a mass-gap black hole with a more massive black hole companion. The detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger has opened up the possibility of detecting the presence or creation of deconfined quark matter using the gravitational wave signal. To investigate this possibility, we construct a family of neutron star matter equations of state at nonzero density and temperature by combining state-of-the-art nuclear matter equations of state with holographic equations of state for strongly interacting quark matter. The emerging picture consistently points toward a strong first order deconfinement transition, with a temperature-dependent critical density and latent heat that we quantitatively examine. We study the process of runaway, unstable Roche lobe overflow in coalescing binary systems and its dependence on the properties of the binary involved. We create three-dimensional hydrodynamic models of binary coalescences, and follow them through a phase of increasing Roche lobe overflow until the accretor is engulfed by the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. In these models, we vary binary properties of mass ratio, donor structure and spin, and equation of state through the gas adiabatic index. We compare the numerical results to semi-analytic models of binary orbit evolution based on mass and angular momentum exchange between two point masses. Using our hydrodynamic simulations, we measure the key parameters: the donor mass loss rate and the angular momentum exchanged per unit mass loss from the donor. Using these calibrations, the semi-analytic model closely reproduces the escalating mass loss and runaway orbital decay observed in the hydrodynamic models. The semi-analytic model accurately reproduces the major differences in orbit evolution that arise with varying mass ratio and donor structure. We encapsulate the semi-analytic model in a publicly-released python package RLOF. We apply this model to the observed period decay and subsequent merger of the binary V1309 Sco, and find that it can simultaneously reproduce the observed orbital decay and time of outburst. We consider binary black holes (BBHs) in a hierarchical triple system where a more compact, less-massive binary is emitting detectable gravitational waves (GWs), and the tertiary is a supermassive BH at the center of a nuclear star cluster. As previous works have shown, the orbital motion of the outer binary can generate a detectable relativistic Doppler boost of the GWs emitted by the orbiting inner binary. We show here that for outer-binary orbits with a period of order one year, there can be a non-negligible probability for repeated gravitational lensing of the GWs emitted by the inner binary. Repeating gravitational lensing events could be detected by the LISA observatory as periodic GW amplitude spikes before the BBH enters the LIGO band. Such a detection would confirm the origin of some BBH mergers in nuclear star clusters. GW lensing also offers new testing grounds for strong gravity., Comment: Accepted to Physical Review D. We investigate the effects of black hole mergers in star clusters on the black hole mass function. As black holes are not produced in pair-instability supernovae, it is suggested that there is a dearth of high mass stellar black holes. This dearth generates a gap in the upper end of the black hole mass function. Meanwhile, parameter fitting of X-ray binaries suggests the existence of a gap in the mass function under 5 solar masses. We show, through evolving a coagulation equation, that black hole mergers can appreciably fill the upper mass gap, and that the lower mass gap generates potentially observable features at larger mass scales. We present an analytic model to estimate the total number of rocky or icy objects that could be captured by planetary systems within the Milky Way galaxy and result in panspermia should they harbor life. We estimate the capture rate of objects ejected from planetary systems over the entire phase space as well as time. Our final expression for the capture rate depends upon the velocity dispersion as well as the characteristic biological survival time and the size of the captured object. We further take into account the number of stars that an interstellar object traverses, as well as the scale height and length of the Milky Way's disk. The likelihood of Galactic panspermia is strongly dependent upon the survival lifetime of the putative organisms as well as the velocity of the transporter. Velocities between $10-100$ km s$^{-1}$ result in the highest probabilities. However, given large enough survival lifetimes, even hypervelocity objects traveling at over 1000 km s$^{-1}$ have a significant chance of capture, thereby increasing the likelihood of panspermia. Thus, we show that panspermia is not exclusively relegated to solar-system sized scales, and the entire Milky Way could potentially be exchanging biotic components across vast distances., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

One of the unique features associated with the Earth is that the fraction of its surface covered by land is comparable to that spanned by its oceans and other water bodies. Here, we investigate how extraterrestrial biospheres depend on the ratio of the surficial land and water fractions. We find that worlds that are overwhelmingly dominated by landmasses or oceans are likely to have sparse biospheres. Our analysis suggests that major evolutionary events such as the buildup of O$_2$ in the atmosphere and the emergence of technological intelligence might be relatively feasible only on a small subset of worlds with surface water fractions ranging approximately between $30\%$ and $90\%$. We investigate the evolution of dust content in galaxies from redshifts z=0 to z=9.5. Using empirically motivated prescriptions, we model galactic-scale properties -- including halo mass, stellar mass, star formation rate, gas mass, and metallicity -- to make predictions for the galactic evolution of dust mass and dust temperature in main sequence galaxies. Our simple analytic model, which predicts that galaxies in the early Universe had greater quantities of dust than their low-redshift counterparts, does a good job at reproducing observed trends between galaxy dust and stellar mass out to z~6. We find that for fixed galaxy stellar mass, the dust temperature increases from z=0 to z=6. Our model forecasts a population of low-mass, high-redshift galaxies with interstellar dust as hot as, or hotter than, their more massive counterparts; but this prediction needs to be constrained by observations. The availability of bioessential elements for "life as we know it", such as phosphorus (P) or possibly molybdenum (Mo), is expected to restrict the biological productivity of extraterrestrial biospheres. Here, we consider worlds with subsurface oceans and model the dissolved concentrations of bioessential elements. In particular, we focus on the sources and sinks of P (available as phosphates), and find that the average steady-state oceanic concentration of P is likely to be lower than the corresponding value on Earth by a few orders of magnitude, provided that the oceans are alkaline and possess hydrothermal activity. While our result does not eliminate the prospects of life on subsurface worlds like Enceladus, it suggests that the putative biospheres might be oligotrophic, and perhaps harder to detect. Along these lines, potential biospheres in the clouds of Venus may end up being limited by the availability of Mo. The first interstellar object, `Oumuamua, was discovered in the Solar System by Pan-STARRS in 2017, allowing for a calibration of the abundance of interstellar objects of its size and an estimation of the subset of objects trapped by the Jupiter-Sun system. Photographing or visiting these trapped objects would allow for learning about the conditions in other planetary systems, saving the need to send interstellar probes. Here, we explore the orbital properties of captured interstellar objects in the Solar System using dynamical simulations of the Jupiter-Sun system and initial conditions drawn from the distribution of relative velocities of stars in the Solar neighborhood. We compare the resulting distributions of orbital elements to those of the most similar population of known asteroids, namely Centaurs, to search for a parameter space in which interstellar objects should dominate and therefore be identifiable solely by their orbits. We find that there should be thousands of `Oumuamua-size interstellar objects identifiable by Centaur-like orbits at high inclinations, assuming a number density of `Oumuamua-size interstellar objects of $\sim 10^{15} \; \mathrm{pc^{-3}}$. We note eight known objects that may be of interstellar origin. We show that a 10 year Gaia mission could astrometrically detect the orbital motion of ~1 sub-parsec separation supermassive black hole binary in the heart of nearby, bright active galactic nuclei (AGN). Candidate AGN lie out to a redshift of z=0.02 and in the V-band magnitude range $10 \lesssim m_V \lesssim 13$. The distribution of detectable binary masses peaks at a few times $10^7$ solar masses and is truncated above a few times $10^8$ solar masses., Comment: Published in Phys. Rev. D

We assess the astrometric detectability of intermediate-mass black holes populating the inner parsec of the Milky Way Galaxy. The presence of these objects induces dynamical effects on Sgr A* and the star S2, which could be detected by next generation astrometric instruments that enable micro-arcsecond astrometry. An allowed population of ten $10^4~M_{\odot}$ IMBHs within one parsec induces an angular shift of about 65 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ on the position of Sgr A*, corresponding to a perpendicular velocity component magnitude of 1.6 km s$^{-1}$. It also induces changes in the orbit of S2 that surpass those induced by general relativity but lie within observational constraints, generating a mean angular shift in periapse and apoapse of 62 $\mu$as and 970 $\mu$as respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

The Gaia mission promises to deliver precision astrometry at an unprecedented level, heralding a new era for discerning the kinematic and spatial coordinates of stars in our Galaxy. Here, we present a new technique for estimating the age of tidally disrupted globular cluster streams using the proper motions and parallaxes of tracer stars. We evolve the collisional dynamics of globular clusters within the evolving potential of a Milky Way-like halo extracted from a cosmological $\Lambda$CDM simulation and analyze the resultant streams as they would be observed by Gaia. The simulations sample a variety of globular cluster orbits, and account for stellar evolution and the gravitational influence of the disk of the Milky Way. We show that a characteristic timescale, obtained from the dispersion of the proper motions and parallaxes of stars within the stream, is a good indicator for the time elapsed since the stream has been freely expanding away due to the tidal disruption of the globular cluster. This timescale, in turn, places a lower limit on the age of the cluster. The rate of tidal disruption flares (TDFs) per mass of the disrupting black hole encodes information on the present-day mass function (PDMF) of stars in the clusters surrounding super massive black holes. We explore how the shape of the TDF rate with black hole mass can constrain the PDMF, with only weak dependence on black hole spin. We show that existing data can marginally constrain the minimum and maximum masses of stars in the cluster, and the high-mass end of the PDMF slope, as well as the overall TDF rate. With of order 100 TDFs expected to be identified with the Zwicky Transient Facility, the overall rate can be highly constrained, but still with only marginal constraints on the PDMF. However, if less than of order 10% of the TDFs expected to be found by LSST over a decade (of order 1000 TDFs) are identified, then precise and accurate estimates can be made for the minimum stellar mass (within a factor of two) and the average slope of the high-mass PDMF (to within ~10%) in nuclear star clusters. This technique could be adapted in the future to probe, in addition to the PDMF, the local black hole mass function and possibly the massive black hole binary population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The possibility of Fast Radio Burst (FRB) emission being suppressed at low frequencies, resulting in a cutoff of the average rest-frame spectrum, has been raised as an explanation for the lack of detections at meter wavelengths. We examine propagation effects that could cause this suppression, and find that a low-frequency spectral cutoff may be generic regardless of the specific FRB emission mechanism. We then illustrate the effects of a low-frequency spectral cutoff on the statistics of FRBs, given a cosmological source population. The observed FRB rate peaks at a specific frequency under a variety of assumptions. Observations at lower frequencies are more sensitive to high-redshift events than observations above the maximal-rate frequency, and therefore result in more sharply broken fluence distributions. Our results suggest that the absence of low-frequency FRBs, and the differences between the Parkes and the Australian Square Kilometre Array (ASKAP) FRB samples, can be fully explained by suppressed low-frequency FRB emission., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to AAS Journals
