In this work, we use Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) introduced as a generic modification to particle dispersion relations to study some consequences of single photon emission, known as vacuum Cherenkov radiation, and photon decay processes in cosmic and gamma rays. These processes are forbidden in a Lorentz invariant theory but allowed under the hypothesis of LIV. We show that the emission rate have a dependency on the cosmic ray primary mass and the electric charge that could modify the UHECR spectrum. Furthermore, LIV dramatically enhances photon decay into an electro-positron pair above certain energy threshold. In this paper, we consider the hypothesis in which a species of ultra light bosonic dark matter (ULBDM) with mass $m_{B}\sim 10^{-22}$ eV could be the dominant dark matter (DM) in the Universe. As a first approach we work in the context of kinetic theory, where ULBDM is described by the phase space distribution function whose dynamics is dictated by the Boltzmann-Einstein equations. We investigate the effects that this kind of dark matter imprints in the acoustic peaks of the cosmic microwave background. We find that the effect of the Bose-Einstein statistics is small, albeit perceptible, and is equivalent to an increase of non-relativistic matter. It is stressed that in this approach, the mass-to-temperature ratio necessary for ULBDM to be a plausible DM candidate is about five orders of magnitude. We show that reionization is also necessary and we address a range of consistent values for this model. We present a model where early inflation and late accelerating expansion of the Universe are driven by the real and imaginary parts of a single complex scalar field, which we identified as inflaton and phantom field, respectively. This inflaton-phantom unification is protected by an internal SO(1,1) symmetry, with the two cosmological scalars appearing as the degrees of freedom of a sole fundamental representation. The unification symmetry allows to build successful potentials. We observe that our theory provides a matter-phantom duality, which transforms scalar matter cosmological solutions into phantom solutions and vice versa. We argue that a brane world with a warped, infinite extra dimension allows for the inflaton to decay into the bulk so that after inflation, the effective dark energy disappears from our brane. This is achieved by the redshifting of the decay products into infinity of the 5th dimension. As a consequence, all matter and CMB density perturbations could have their origin in the decay of a MSSM flat direction rather than the inflaton. We discuss cosmology of models with universal extra dimensions, where the Standard Model degrees of freedom live in a $4+n$ dimensional brane, with $n$ compact and small extra spatial dimensions. In these models, the simplest way to obtain the conventional 4-dimensional Planck scale starting with a low string scale is to have also some larger extra dimensions, where only gravity propagates. In such theories, dimensional reduction generically leads to at least two radion fields, one associated with the total volume of the extra spatial dimensions, and the other with the ratio of the sizes of small and large extra dimensions. In this paper, we discuss the impact of the radion fields on cosmology. We emphasize various aspects of radion physics such as radion coupling to the Standard Model fields, bare and dressed radion masses during inflation, dynamical stabilization of radions during and after inflation, radion decay life time and its late dominance in thermal history of the Universe as well as its quantum fluctuations during inflation. We argue that models where the radion plays the role of an inflaton or the inflaton is a brane scalar field, run into problems. We then present a successful inflation model with bulk scalar fields that seems to have all the desired properties. In models with flat extra dimensions tiny Dirac neutrino masses can be generated via the coupling of four dimensional Standard Model fields to a higher dimensional fermion. Here we argue that, in spite of the Dirac nature of the neutrino, quantization of the electric charge can still be understood as a result of anomaly cancellation, charge conservation and naturalness requirements., Comment: 9 pages. In theories with an infinite extra dimension, free particles localized on the brane can leak out to the extra space. We argue that if there were color confinement in the bulk, electrons would be more able to escape than quarks and than protons (which are composed states). Thus, this process generates an electric charge asymmetry on brane matter densities. A primordial charge asymmetry during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis era is predicted. We use current bounds on this and on electron disappearance to constrain the parameter space of these models. Although the generated asymmetry is generically small, it could be particularly enhanced on large densities as in astrophysical objects, like massive stars. We suggest the possibility that such accumulation of charge may be linked, upon supernova collapse, to the formation of a charged Black Hole and the generation of Gamma-Ray Bursts., Comment: Four pages, one figure. In this paper we propose a new mechanism of inflating the Universe with non-BPS $D4$ branes which decay into stable $D3$ branes via tachyon condensation. In a single brane scenario the tachyon potential is very steep and unable to support inflation. However if the universe lives in a stack of branes produced by a set of non-interacting unstable $\tilde {D4}$ branes, then the associated set of tachyons may drive inflation along our 3 spatial dimensions. After tachyon condensation the Universe is imagined to be filled with a set of parallel stable $D3$ branes. We describe a simple and predictive scenario for baryogenesis in theories with large extra dimensions which resembles Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. The Affleck-Dine field is a complex scalar field carrying a $U(1)_{\chi}$ charge which is dynamically broken after the end of inflation. This generates an excess of $\chi$ over $\bar \chi$, which then decays into Standard Model fermions to produce an excess of baryons over anti-baryons. Our model is very constrained because the Affleck-Dine field has to be sufficiently flat during inflation. We assume that the mass matrix of active neutrinos has hierarchical form with small mixings, similar to quark mass matrix. We show that the large mixings between $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\tau$ as well as between $\nu_e$ and certain combination of $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\tau$ required by the present data can appear due to the presence of a sterile neutrino state. Two realizations of this possibility are considered: (i) Large flavor mixing appears as a result of sterile neutrino ``decoupling'' ($m_{ss} \gg m_a$), so that the active-sterile mixings are negligible. (ii) Sterile neutrino has a mass of O(1) eV and its mixing with active neutrinos can be observable. In the second case, the (3+1) scheme of neutrino mass, which also accommodates the LSND result, can be reproduced, provided the hierarchy of the mass matrix of active neutrinos is not strong (the ratio of largest to smallest elements is about two orders of magnitude). A new mechanism for understanding small neutrino masses using only simple new physics at the TeV scale is proposed. We study the cosmology of models with four space and one time dimension where our universe is a 3-brane and report a few results which extend existing work in several directions. Assuming a stable fifth dimension, we obtain a solution for the metric, which does not depend on any arbitrary parameters. Particle physics models where there are large hidden extra dimensions are currently on the focus of an intense activity. The main reason is that these large extra dimensions may come with a TeV scale for quantum gravity (or string theory) which leads to a plethora of new observable phenomena in colliders as well in other areas of particle physics. Those new dimensions could be as large as millimeters implying deviations of the Newton's law of gravity at these scales. Intending to provide a basic introduction to this fast developing area, we present a general overview of theories with large extra dimensions. We center our discussion on models for neutrino masses, high dimensional extensions of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification. We discuss the recently proposed technic of splitting fermion wave functions on a tick brane which may solve the problem of a fast proton decay and produce fermion mass hierarchies without invoking extra global symmetries. A new economical model for neutrino masses is proposed in the context of brane bulk scenarios for particle physics, where global B-L symmetry of the standard model is broken spontaneously by a gauge singlet Higgs field in the bulk. This leads to a bulk majoron whose KK excitations may make it visible if neutrinoless double beta decay if the string scale is close to a TeV. We discuss inflation in models with large extra dimensions, driven by a bulk scalar field. The brane inflaton is then a single effective field, obtained from the bulk scalar field by scaling. The self interaction terms of the effective brane inflaton are then naturally suppressed. The picture is consistent with a fundamental string scale in the TeV range without the problem of a superlight inflaton. If hybrid inflation is considered, the right prediction for the density perturbations as observed by COBE can be obtained without any fine tunning. We present a gauge model for the bimaximal mixing pattern among the neutrinos that explains both the atmospheric and solar neutrino data via large angle vacuum oscillation among the three known neutrinos. The model does not include righthanded neutrinos but additional Higgs triplets which acquire naturally small vev's due to the type II seesaw mechanism. A combination of global $L_e-L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ and $S_3$ symmetries constrain the mass matrix for both charged leptons and neutrinos in such a way that the bimaximal pattern emerges naturally at the tree level and needed splittings among neutrinos at the one loop level. We discuss the profile of neutrino masses and mixings in models with large extra dimensions when right handed neutrinos are present in the branes along with the usual standard model particles. In these models, string scale must be bigger than $10^{8}$ GeV to have desired properties for the neutrinos at low energies. If light sterile neutrinos are needed to understand the neutrino puzzles, as is currently indicated, a major theoretical challenge is to understand why its mass is so small. It is a more serious problem than understanding the small mass of the familiar neutrinos. We discuss a new way to solve this problem by identifying the sterile neutrino as gauge neutral fermion propagating in the bulk of a higher dimensional theory, with bulk size of order of a millimeter. The smallness of its mass is then a consequence of the size of the extra dimension and does not need the introduction of new symmetries.
