This study proposes a novel coupled-mode theory for two-dimensional exterior Helmholtz problems. The proposed approach is based on the separation of the entire space R2 into a fictitious disk and its exterior. The disk is allocated in such a way that it comprises all the inhomogeneity; therefore, the exterior supports cylindrical waves with a continuous spectrum. For the interior, we expand an unknown wave field using normal modes that satisfy some auxiliary boundary conditions on the surface of the disk. For the interior expansion, we propose combining the Neumann and Dirichlet normal modes. We show that the proposed expansion sacrifices L2 orthogonality but significantly improve the convergence. Finally, we present some numerical verifications of the proposed coupled-mode theory., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

A mesh-free approach for modelling beam-wall interactions in particle accelerators is proposed. The key idea of our method is to use a deep neural network as a surrogate for the solution to a set of partial differential equations involving the particle beam, and the surface impedance concept. In this paper we study the resolvent of wave operators on open and bounded Lipschitz domains of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We give results on existence and estimates of the resolvent for the real and complex cases.

In multiphase fluid flow, fluid-structure interaction, and other applications, partial differential equations (PDEs) often arise with discontinuous coefficients and singular sources (e.g., Dirac delta functions). These complexities arise due to changes in material properties at an immersed interface or embedded boundary, which may have an irregular shape. Consequently, the solution and its gradient can be discontinuous, and numerical methods can be difficult to design. Here a new method is presented and analyzed, using a simple formulation of one-dimensional finite differences on a Cartesian grid, allowing for a relatively easy setup for one-, two-, or three-dimensional problems. The derivation is relatively simple and mainly involves centered finite difference formulas, with less reliance on the Taylor series expansions of typical immersed interface method derivations. The method preserves a sharp interface with discontinuous solutions, obtained from a small number of iterations (approximately five) of solving a symmetric linear system with updates to the right-hand side. Second-order accuracy is rigorously proven in one spatial dimension and demonstrated through numerical examples in two and three spatial dimensions. The method is tested here on the variable-coefficient Poisson equation, and it could be extended for use on time-dependent problems of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, or other applications.

For smooth bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ , we prove upper and lower $L^{2}$ bounds on the boundary data of Neumann eigenfunctions, and we prove quasiorthogonality of this boundary data in a spectral window. The bounds are tight in the sense that both are independent of the eigenvalues; this is achieved by working with an appropriate norm for boundary functions, which includes a spectral weight, that is, a function of the boundary Laplacian. This spectral weight is chosen to cancel concentration at the boundary that can happen for whispering gallery-type eigenfunctions. These bounds are closely related to wave equation estimates due to Tataru. Using this, we bound the distance from an arbitrary Helmholtz parameter $E\gt 0$ to the nearest Neumann eigenvalue in terms of boundary normal derivative data of a trial function $u$ solving the Helmholtz equation $(\Delta-E)u=0$ . This inclusion bound improves over previously known bounds by a factor of $E^{5/6}$ , analogously to a recently improved inclusion bound in the Dirichlet case due to the first two authors. Finally, we apply our theory to present an improved numerical implementation of the method of particular solutions for computation of Neumann eigenpairs on smooth planar domains. We show that the new inclusion bound improves the relative accuracy in a computed Neumann eigenvalue (around the $42000$ th) from nine to fourteen digits, with negligible extra numerical effort.

In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition to the Lane-Emden conjecture. This condition is an energy type of integral estimate on solutions to subcritical Lane-Emden system. To approach the long standing and interesting conjecture, we believe that one plausible path is to refocus on establishing this energy type estimate.

We associate to each stable Higgs pair $(A_0,\Phi_0)$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ a singular limiting configuration $(A_\infty,\Phi_\infty)$, assuming that $\det \Phi$ has only simple zeroes. We then prove a desingularization theorem by constructing a family of solutions $(A_t,t\Phi_t)$ to Hitchin's equations which converge to this limiting configuration as $t \to \infty$. This provides a new proof, via gluing methods, for elements in the ends of the Higgs bundle moduli space and identifies a dense open subset of the boundary of the compactification of this moduli space., Comment: 42 pages, minor revision

We present here a fine singularity analysis of solutions to the Laplace equation in special polygonal domains in the plane. We assume piecewise constant Neumann on one component of the boundary. Our motivation is to find the rigorous proof the so-called Berg's effect.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact hypersurface in \mathds{R}^{n+1} as it is flattened into a singular double-sided flat hypersurface. We show that the limit spectral problem corresponds to the Dirichlet and Neumann problems on one side of this flat (Euclidean) limit, and derive an explicit three-term asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues where the remaining two terms are of orders \varepsilon^2\log\varepsilon and \varepsilon^2.

We initiate the study of the finiteness condition $\int_{\Omega}u(x)^{-\beta}\,dx\leq C(\Omega,\beta)0$ for which the aforementioned condition holds under various hypotheses on the smoothness of $\Omega$ and demands on the nature of the constant $C(\Omega,\beta)$. Classes of domains for which our analysis applies include bounded piecewise $C^1$ domains in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, $n\geq 2$, with conical singularities (in particular polygonal domains in the plane), polyhedra in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, and bounded domains which are locally of class $C^2$ and which have (finitely many) outwardly pointing cusps. Harmonic functions u : R n ! R m are equivalent to integral manifolds of an exterior differential system with independence condition (M,I,!). To this system one asso- ciates the space of conservation laws C. They provide necessary conditions for g : S n 1 ! M to be the boundary of an integral submanifold. We show that in a local sense these condi- tions are also sufficient to guarantee the existence of an integral manifold with boundary g(S n 1 ). The proof uses standard linear elliptic theory to produce an integral manifold G : D n ! A new method is presented for Fourier decomposition of the Helmholtz Green Function in cylindrical coordinates, which is equivalent to obtaining the solution of the Helmholtz equation for a general ring source. The Fourier coefficients of the Helmholtz Green function are split into their half advanced+half retarded and half advanced-half retarded components. Closed form solutions are given for these components in terms of a Horn function and a Kampe de Feriet function, respectively. The systems of partial differential equations associated with these two-dimensional hypergeometric functions are used to construct a fourth-order ordinary differential equation which both components satisfy. A second fourth-order ordinary differential equation for the general Fourier coefficent is derived from an integral representation of the coefficient, and both differential equations are shown to be equivalent. Series solutions for the various Fourier coefficients are also given, mostly in terms of Legendre functions and Bessel/Hankel functions. These are derived from the closed form hypergeometric solutions or an integral representation, or both. Numerical calculations comparing different methods of calculating the Fourier coefficients are presented.

We present an accurate, stable, and efficient solution to the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for electromagnetic scattering in two dimensions. The method is well suited for multiple scattering problems and may be applied to problems with scatterers of arbitrary shape or non-homogenous background materials. We illustrate the method by calculating light emission from a line source in a finite-sized photonic crystal waveguide.

Using the asymptotical minimax framework, we examine convergence rates equivalency between a continuous functional deconvolution model and its real-life discrete counterpart over a wide range of Besov balls and for the $L^2$-risk. For this purpose, all possible models are divided into three groups. For the models in the first group, which we call uniform, the convergence rates in the discrete and the continuous models coincide no matter what the sampling scheme is chosen, and hence the replacement of the discrete model by its continuous counterpart is legitimate. For the models in the second group, to which we refer as regular, one can point out the best sampling strategy in the discrete model, but not every sampling scheme leads to the same convergence rates; there are at least two sampling schemes which deliver different convergence rates in the discrete model (i.e., at least one of the discrete models leads to convergence rates that are different from the convergence rates in the continuous model). The third group consists of models for which, in general, it is impossible to devise the best sampling strategy; we call these models irregular. We formulate the conditions when each of these situations takes place. In the regular case, we not only point out the number and the selection of sampling points which deliver the fastest convergence rates in the discrete model but also investigate when, in the case of an arbitrary sampling scheme, the convergence rates in the continuous model coincide or do not coincide with the convergence rates in the discrete model. We prove that every eigenvalue of a Robin problem with boundary parameter $\alpha$ on a sufficiently smooth domain behaves asymptotically like $-\alpha^2$ as $\alpha \to \infty$. This generalises an existing result for the first eigenvalue.

We extend deconvolution in a periodic setting to deal with functional data. The resulting functional deconvolution model can be viewed as a generalization of a multitude of inverse problems in mathematical physics where one needs to recover initial or boundary conditions on the basis of observations from a noisy solution of a partial differential equation. In the case when it is observed at a finite number of distinct points, the proposed functional deconvolution model can also be viewed as a multichannel deconvolution model. We derive minimax lower bounds for the $L^2$-risk in the proposed functional deconvolution model when $f(\cdot)$ is assumed to belong to a Besov ball and the blurring function is assumed to possess some smoothness properties, including both regular-smooth and super-smooth convolutions. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive wavelet estimator of $f(\cdot)$ that is asymptotically optimal (in the minimax sense), or near-optimal within a logarithmic factor, in a wide range of Besov balls. In addition, we consider a discretization of the proposed functional deconvolution model and investigate when the availability of continuous data gives advantages over observations at the asymptotically large number of points. We analyze a pair of reflected Brownian motions in a planar domain $D$, for which the increments of both processes form mirror images of each other when the processes are not on the boundary. We show that for $D$ in a class of smooth convex planar domains, the two processes remain ordered forever, according to a certain partial order. We investigate the band-gap structure of the frequency spectrum for elastic waves in a high-contrast, two-component periodic elastic medium. We consider two-dimensional phononic crystals consisting of a background medium which is perforated by an array of holes periodic along each of the two orthogonal coordinate axes. In this paper we establish a full asymptotic formula for dispersion relations of phononic band structures as the contrast of the shear modulus and that of the density become large. The main ingredients are integral equation formulations of the solutions to the harmonic oscillatory linear elastic equation and several theorems concerning the characteristic values of meromorphic operator-valued functions in the complex plane such as Generalized Rouch\'{e}'s theorem. We establish a connection between the band structures and the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on the elementary hole. We also provide a criterion for exhibiting gaps in the band structure which shows that smaller the density of the matrix is, wider the band-gap is, provided that the criterion is fulfilled. This phenomenon was reported by Economou and Sigalas who observed that periodic elastic composites whose matrix has lower density and higher shear modulus compared to those of inclusions yield better open gaps. Scattering properties of a material are changed when the material is injected with small acoustically soft particles. It is shown that its new scattering behavior can be understood as a solution of a potential scattering problem with the potential $q$ explicitly related to the density of the small particles. Szabo's models of acoustic attenuation [Szabo, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96(1), 491-500 (1994)] comply well with the empirical frequency power law involving noninteger and odd-integer exponent coefficients while guaranteeing causality, but nevertheless encounter the troublesome issues of hypersingular improper integral and obscurity in implementing initial conditions. The purpose of this paper is to ease or remove these drawbacks of the Szabo's models via the Caputo fractional derivative concept. The positive time-fractional derivative is also introduced to include the positivity of the attenuation processes.
