For n an even number of qubits and v a unitary evolution, a matrix decomposition v=k1 a k2 of the unitary group is explicitly computable and allows for study of the dynamics of the concurrence entanglement monotone. The side factors k1 and k2 of this Concurrence Canonical Decomposition (CCD) are concurrence symmetries, so the dynamics reduce to consideration of the a factor. In this work, we provide an explicit numerical algorithm computing v=k1 a k2 for n odd. Further, in the odd case we lift the monotone to a two-argument function, allowing for a theory of concurrence dynamics in odd qubits. The generalization may also be studied using the CCD, leading again to maximal concurrence capacity for most unitaries. The key technique is to consider the spin-flip as a time reversal symmetry operator in Wigner's axiomatization; the original CCD derivation may be restated entirely in terms of this time reversal. En route, we observe a Kramers' nondegeneracy: the existence of a nondegenerate eigenstate of any time reversal symmetric n-qubit Hamiltonian demands (i) n even and (ii) maximal concurrence of said eigenstate. We present a stability theory for kink propagation in chains of coupled oscillators and a new algorithm for the numerical study of kink dynamics. The numerical solutions are computed using an equivalent integral equation instead of a system of differential equations. This avoids uncertainty about the impact of artificial boundary conditions and discretization in time. Stability results also follow from the integral version. Stable kinks have a monotone leading edge and move with a velocity larger than a critical value which depends on the damping strength., Comment: 11 figures

We prove the existence of reaction-diffusion traveling fronts in mean zero space-time periodic shear flows for nonnegative reactions including the classical KPP (Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov) nonlinearity. For the KPP nonlinearity, the minimal front speed is characterized by a variational principle involving the principal eigenvalue of a space-time periodic parabolic operator. Analysis of the variational principle shows that adding a mean-zero space time periodic shear flow to an existing mean zero space-periodic shear flow leads to speed enhancement. Computation of KPP minimal speeds is performed based on the variational principle and a spectrally accurate discretization of the principal eigenvalue problem. It shows that the enhancement is monotone decreasing in temporal shear frequency, and that the total enhancement from pure reaction-diffusion obeys quadratic and linear laws at small and large shear amplitudes.

We prove ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels for XXX Heisenberg chains of any spin and XXZ spin chains with all spins equal to 1/2. Ferromagnetic ordering means that the minimum energies in the invariant subspaces of fixed total spin are monotone decreasing as a function of the total spin. This result provides a ferromagnetic analogue of the well-known theorem by Lieb and Mattis about ordering of energy levels in antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic systems on bipartite graphs., Comment: 4 pages, final version, some references added

Consider an operator equation B(u) − f = 0 in a real Hilbert space. Let us call this equation ill-posed if the operator B′(u) is not boundedly invertible, and well-posed otherwise. The dynamical systems method (DSM) for solving this equation consists of a construction of a Cauchy problem, which has the following properties: (1) it has a global solution for an arbitrary initial data, (2) this solution tends to a limit as time tends to infinity, (3) the limit is the minimal-norm solution to the equation B(u) = f. A global convergence theorem is proved for DSM for equation B(u) − f = 0 with monotone C loc 2 operators B.

The theory of monotone Riemannian metrics on the state space of a quantum system was established by Denes Petz in 1996. In a recent paper he argued that the scalar curvature of a statistically relevant - monotone - metric can be interpreted as an average statistical uncertainty. The present paper contributes to this subject. It is reasonable to expect that states which are more mixed are less distinguishable than those which are less mixed. The manifestation of this behavior could be that for such a metric the scalar curvature has a maximum at the maximally mixed state. We show that not every monotone metric fulfils this expectation, some of them behave in a very different way. A mathematical condition is given for monotone Riemannian metrics to have a local minimum at the maximally mixed state and examples are given for such metrics., Comment: 15 pages, to be published in Journal of Mathematical Physics

Hasegawa and Petz introduced the notion of dual statistically monotone metrics. They also gave a characterisation theorem showing that Wigner-Yanase-Dyson metrics are the only members of the dual family. The notion of a tensor product with projections or with inclusions is defined. It is shown that the definition of stochastic independence relies on such a structure and that independence can be defined in an arbitrary category with a tensor product with inclusions or projections. In this context, the classifications of quantum stochastic independence by Muraki, Ben Ghorbal, and Sch\"urmann become classifications of the tensor products with inclusions for the categories of algebraic probability spaces and non-unital algebraic probability spaces. The notion of a reduction of one independence to another is also introduced. As examples the reductions of Fermi independence and boolean, monotone, and anti-monotone independence to tensor independence are presented.

Monotone systems constitute one of the most important classes of dynamical systems used in mathematical biology modeling. The objective of this paper is to extend the notion of monotonicity to systems with inputs and outputs, a necessary first step in trying to understand interconnections, especially including feedback loops, built up out of monotone components. We prove the existence of gaps between all the different classes of matrix monotone functions defined on an interval, provided the interval is non trivial and different from the whole real line. We then show how matrix monotone functions may be used in the characterization of certain C*-algebras as an alternative to the study of the matricial structure by positive linear maps.

Let D be a database of N objects where each object has m fields. The objects are given in m sorted lists (where the ith list is sorted according to the ith field). Our goal is to find the top k objects according to a monotone aggregation function t, while minimizing access to the lists. The problem arises in several contexts. In particular Fagin (JCSS 1999) considered it for the purpose of aggregating information in a multimedia database system. We are interested in instance optimality, i.e. that our algorithm will be as good as any other (correct) algorithm on any instance. We study the problem of invariance of indices of thematic factorizations. Such factorizations were introduced in [PY1] for studying superoptimal approximation by bounded analytic matrix functions. As shown in [PY1], the indices may depend on the choice of a thematic factorization. We introduce the notion of a monotone thematic factorization. The main result shows that under natural assumptions a matrix function that admits a thematic factorization also admits a monotone thematic factorization and the indices of a monotone thematic factorization are uniquely determined by the matrix function itself. We obtain similar results for so-called partial thematic factorizations., Comment: 20 pages

Consider the number of permutations in the symmetric group on n letters that contain c copies of a given pattern. As c varies (with n held fixed) these numbers form a sequence whose properties we study for the monotone patterns and the patterns 1, l, l-1, ..., 2. It is well-known that the question of whether a given finite region can be tiled with a given set of tiles is NP-complete. We show that the same is true for the right tromino and square tetromino on the square lattice, or for the right tromino alone. In the process, we show that Monotone 1-in-3 Satisfiability is NP-complete for planar cubic graphs. In higher dimensions, we show NP-completeness for the domino and straight tromino for general regions on the cubic lattice, and for simply-connected regions on the four-dimensional hypercubic lattice.

We introduce the theory of operator monotone functions and employ it to derive a new inequality relating the quantum relative entropy and the quantum conditional entropy. We compute the limiting distributions of the lengths of the longest monotone subsequences of random (signed) involutions with or without conditions on the number of fixed points (and negated points) as the sizes of the involutions tend to infinity. The resulting distributions are, depending on the number of fixed points, (1) the Tracy-Widom distributions for the largest eigenvalues of random GOE, GUE, GSE matrices, (2) the normal distribution, or (3) new classes of distributions which interpolate between pairs of the Tracy-Widom distributions. We also consider the second rows of the corresponding Young diagrams. In each case the convergence of moments is also shown. We use the relative modular operator to define a generalized relative entropy for any convex operator function g on the positive real line satisfying g(1) = 0. We show that these convex operator functions can be partitioned into convex subsets each of which defines a unique symmetrized relative entropy, a unique family (parameterized by density matrices) of continuous monotone Riemannian metrics, a unique geodesic distance on the space of density matrices, and a unique monotone operator function satisfying certain symmetry and normalization conditions. We describe these objects explicitly in several important special cases, including the familiar logarithmic relative entropy. The relative entropies, Riemannian metrics, and geodesic distances obtained by our procedure all contract under completely positive, trace-preserving maps. This paper deals with the limit behaviour of the solutions of quasi-linear equations of the form \ $\ds -\limfunc{div}\left(a\left(x, x/{\varepsilon _h},Du_h\right)\right)=f_h$ on $\Omega $ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The sequence $(\varepsilon _h)$ tends to $0$ and the map $a(x,y,\xi )$ is periodic in $y$, monotone in $\xi $ and satisfies suitable continuity conditions. It is proved that $u_h\rightarrow u$ weakly in $H_0^{1,2}(\Omega )$, where $u$ is the solution of a homogenized problem \ $-\limfunc{div}(b(x,Du))=f$ on $\Omega $. We also prove some corrector results, i.e. we find $(P_h)$ such that $Du_h-P_h(Du)\rightarrow 0$ in $L^2(\Omega ,R^n)$.

By a {\bf generalized arc\/} we mean a continuum with exactly two non-separating points; an {\bf arc} is a metrizable generalized arc. It is well known that any two arcs are homeomorphic (to the real closed unit interval); we show that any two generalized arcs are co-elementarily equivalent, and that co-elementary images of generalized arcs are generalized arcs. We also show that if $f:X \to Y$ is a function between compact Hausdorff spaces and if $X$ is an arc, then $f$ is a co-elementary map if and only if $Y$ is an arc and $f$ is a monotone continuous surjection.

We study the asymptotic shape of the occupied region for monotone deterministic dynamics in d-dimensional Euclidean space parametrized by a threshold theta, and a Borel set N with positive and finite Lebesgue measure. If A_n denotes the occupied set of the dynamics at integer time n, then A_n+1 is obtained by adjoining any point x for which the volume of overlap between x+N and A_n exceeds theta. Except in some degenerate cases, we prove that A_n converges to a unique limiting "shape" L starting from any bounded initial region that is suitably large. Moreover, L is computed as the polar transform for 1/w, where w is an explicit width function that depends on N and theta. It is further shown that L describes the limiting shape of wave fronts for certain cellular automaton growth rules related to lattice models of excitable media, as the threshold and range of interaction increase suitably. In the case of 2-d box neighborhoods, these limiting shapes are calculated and the dependence of their anisotropy on theta is examined.
