It is well known that models used in conventional regression analysis are commonly misspecified. A standard response is little more than a shrug. Data analysts invoke Box's maxim that all models are wrong and then proceed as if the results are useful nevertheless. In this paper, we provide an alternative. Regression models are treated explicitly as approximations of a true response surface that can have a number of desirable statistical properties, including estimates that are asymptotically unbiased. Valid statistical inference follows. We generalize the formulation to include regression functionals, which broadens substantially the range of potential applications. Affine manifolds are called integral if there is an atlas such that all transition maps are affine transformations with integer matrices of linear parts. In this paper we describe all complete integral affine structures on compact three-dimensional manifolds up to a finite-sheeted covering. Also a complete list of integral affine structures on the three-dimensional torus and compact three-dimensional nilmanifolds was obtained.

[EN] We study one of the strongest versions of chaos for continuous dynamical systems, namely the specification property. We extend the definition of specification property for operators on a Banach space to strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups of operators, that is, C0-semigroups. In addition, we study the relationships of the specification property for C0-semigroups (SgSP) with other dynamical properties: mixing, Devaney's chaos, distributional chaos, and frequent hypercyclicity. Concerning the applications, we provide several examples of semigroups which exhibit the SgSP with particular interest on solution semigroups to certain linear PDEs, which range from the hyperbolic heat equation to the Black-Scholes equation., The authors were supported by MINECO, Projects MTM2013-47093-P and MTM2016-75963-P. It is known that the Ising model on $\mathbb {Z}^d$ at a given temperature is a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process if and only if the temperature is at least the critical temperature. Below the critical temperature, the plus and minus states of the Ising model are distinct and differ from one another by a global flip of the spins. We show that it is only this global information which poses an obstruction for being finitary by showing that the gradient of the Ising model is a finitary factor of i.i.d. at all temperatures. As a consequence, we deduce a volume-order large deviation estimate for the energy. A similar result is shown for the Potts model. A result in the same spirit is also shown for the six-vertex model, which is itself the gradient of a height function, with parameter $c \gtrapprox 6.4$. We show that the gradient of the height function is not a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process, but that its "Laplacian" is. For this, we introduce a coupling between the six-vertex model with $c\ge 2$ and a new graphical representation of it, reminiscent of the Edwards--Sokal coupling between the Potts and random-cluster models. We believe that this graphical representation may be of independent interest and could serve as a tool in further understanding of the six-vertex model. To provide further support for the ubiquity of this type of phenomenon, we also prove an analogous result for the so-called beach model. The tools and techniques used in this paper are probabilistic in nature. The heart of the argument is to devise a suitable tree structure on the clusters of the underlying percolation process (associated to the graphical representation of the given model), which can be revealed piece-by-piece via exploration., Comment: 39 pages, 8 figures

In this paper we consider the inverse scattering problem for high-contrast targets, and analyze mathematically the experimentally observed phenomenon about super-resolution in imaging the shapes of these targets. In particular, super-resolution at specific high contrast values is justified based on the novel concept of scattering coefficients and several important implications (given by two main theorems, Theorem 4.6 , Theorem 4.9 ). This is the first time that a mathematical theory of super-resolution is established in the context of imaging high-contrast inclusions. We shall also illustrate our main findings with a variety of numerical examples. These findings may help develop resonant structures for resolution enhancement.

It is shown that every holomorphic map $f$ from a Runge domain $\Omega$ of an affine algebraic variety $S$ into a projective algebraic manifold $X$ is a uniform limit of Nash algebraic maps $f_\nu$ defined over an exhausting sequence of relatively compact open sets $\Omega_\nu$ in $\Omega$. A relative version is also given: If there is an algebraic subvariety $A$ (not necessarily reduced) in $S$ such that the restriction of $f$ to $A\cap\Omega$ is algebraic, then $f_\nu$ can be taken to coincide with $f$ on $A\cap\Omega_\nu$. The main application of these results, when $\Omega$ is the unit disk, is to show that the Kobayashi pseudodistance and the Kobayashi-Royden infinitesimal metric of a quasi-projective algebraic manifold $Z$ are computable solely in terms of the closed algebraic curves in $Z$. Similarly, the $p$-dimensional Eisenman metric of a quasi-projective algebraic manifold can be computed in terms of the Eisenman volumes of its $p$-dimensional algebraic subvarieties. Another question addressed in the paper is whether the approximations $f_\nu$ can be taken to have their images contained in affine Zariski open subsets of $X$. By using complex analytic methods (pluricomplex potential theory and H\"ormander's $L^2$ estimates), we show that this is the case if $f$ is an embedding (with $\dim S, Comment: 32 pages, plain-TeX. In this paper we study conditions on a Banach space X that ensure that the Banach algebra K(X) of compact operators is amenable. We give a symmetrized approximation property of X which is proved to be such a condition. This property is satisfied by a wide range of Banach spaces including all the classical spaces. We then investigate which constructions of new Banach spaces from old ones preserve the property of carrying amenable algebras of compact operators. Roughly speaking, dual spaces, predual spaces and certain tensor products do inherit this property and direct sums do not. For direct sums this question is closely related to factorization of linear operators. In the final section we discuss some open questions, in particular, the converse problem of what properties of X are implied by the amenability of K(X).

We associate to any germ of an analytic variety a Lie algebra of tangent vector fields, the {\it tangent algebra}. Conversely, to any Lie algebra of vector fields an analytic germ can be associated, the {\it integral variety}. The paper investigates properties of this correspondence: The set of all tangent algebras is characterized in purely Lie algebra theoretic terms. Any arrangement of hyperplanes in general position in $P^n$ can be regarded as a divisor with normal crossing. We study the bundles of logarithmic 1-forms corresponding to such divisors` from the point of view of classification of vector bundles on $P^n$. It turns out that all such bundles are stable. The study of jumping lines of these bundles gives a unified treatment of several classical constructions associating a curve to a collection of points in $P^n$. The main result of the paper is "Torelli theorem" which says that the collection of hyperplanes can be recovered from the isomorphism class of the corresponding logarithmic bundle unless the hyperplanes ocsulate a rational normal curve. A Banach spaceEis said to haveProperty(w) if every operator fromEintoE' is weakly compact. This property was introduced by E. and P. Saab in [9]. They observe that for Banach lattices, Property (w) is equivalent to Property (V*), which in turn is equivalent to the Banach lattice having a weakly sequentially complete dual. Thus the following question was raised in [9].Does every Banach space with Property (w) have a weakly sequentially complete dual, or even Property (V*)?In this paper, we give two examples, both of which answer the question in the negative. Both examples are James type spaces considered in [1]. They both possess properties stronger than Property (w). The first example has the property that every operator from the space into the dual is compact. In the second example, both the space and its dual have Property (w). In the last section we establish some partial results concerning the problem (also raised in [9]) of whether (w) passes from a Banach spaceEtoC(K, E).

One of the aims of this paper is to better explain the philosophy behind the computations in [E.Bifet, C.De Concini,C.Procesi Cohomology of Regular Embeddings ] and to place them in a wider conceptual setting. Another aim of the paper is to outline in the last section an ``equivariant'' approach to some key results in the theory of toric varieties. The text of the first three sections follows closely a talk delivered at the University of Copenhagen in July 1989 on the occasion of the Zeuthen Symposium. Let $X$ be a compact Hausdorff space, let $E$ be a Banach space, and let $C(X,E)$ stand for the Banach space of $E$-valued continuous functions on $X$ under the uniform norm. In this paper we characterize Integral operators (in the sense of Grothendieck) on $C(X,E)$ spaces in term of their representing vector measures. This is then used to give some applications to Nuclear operators on $C(X,E)$ spaces.

We continue an investigation started in a preceding paper. We discuss the classical results of Carleson connecting Carleson measures with the $\d$-equation in a slightly more abstract framework than usual. We also consider a more recent result of Peter Jones which shows the existence of a solution of the $\d$-equation, which satisfies simultaneously a good $L_\i$ estimate and a good $L_1$ estimate. This appears as a special case of our main result which can be stated as follows: Let $(\Omega,\cal{A},\mu)$ be any measure space. Consider a bounded operator $u:H^1\ra L_1(\mu)$. Assume that on one hand $u$ admits an extension $u_1:L^1\ra L_1(\mu)$ bounded with norm $C_1$, and on the other hand that $u$ admits an extension $u_\i:L^\i\ra L_\i(\mu)$ bounded with norm $C_\i$. Then $u$ admits an extension $\w{u}$ which is bounded simultaneously from $L^1$ into $ L_1(\mu)$ and from $L^\i$ into $ L_\i(\mu)$ and satisfies $$\eqalign{&\|\tilde u\colon \ L_\infty \to L_\infty(\mu)\|\le CC_\infty\cr &\|\tilde u\colon \ L_1\to L_1(\mu)\|\le CC_1}$$ where $C$ is a numerical constant.

Let Ω: be a compact Hausdorff space, let E be a Banach space, and let C(Ω, E) stand for the Banach space of continuous E-valued functions on Ω under supnorm. It is well known [3, p. 182] that if F is a Banach space then any bounded linear operator T:C(Ω, E)→ F has a finitely additive vector measure G defined on the σ-field of Borel subsets of Ω with values in the space ℒ(E, F**) of bounded linear operators from E to the second dual F** of F. The measure G is said to represent T. The purpose of this note is to study the interplay between certain properties of the operator T and properties of the representing measure G. Precisely, one of our goals is to study when one can characterize nuclear operators in terms of their representing measures. This is of course motivated by a well-known theorem of L. Schwartz [5] (see also [3, p. 173]) concerning nuclear operators on spaces C(Ω) of continuous scalar-valued functions. The study of nuclear operators on spaces C(Ω, E) of continuous vector-valued functions was initiated in [1], where the author extended Schwartz's result in case E* has the Radon-Nikodym property. In this paper, we will show that the condition on E* to have the Radon-Nikodym property is necessary to have a Schwartz's type theorem. This leads to a new characterization of dual spaces E* with the Radon-Nikodym property. In [2], it was shown that if T:C(Ω, E)→ F is nuclear than its representing measure G takes its values in the space (E, F) of nuclear operators from E to F. One of the results of this paper is that if T:C(Ω, E)→ F is nuclear then its representing measure G is countably additive and of bounded variation as a vector measure taking its values in (E, F) equipped with the nuclear norm. Finally, we show by easy examples that the above mentioned conditions on the representing measure G do not characterize nuclear operators on C(Ω, E) spaces, and we also look at cases where nuclear operators are indeed characterized by the above two conditions. This paper is about sheaf cohomology for varieties (schemes) in characteristic $p>0$. We assume the presence of a Frobenius splitting. (See V.B. Mehta and A. Ramanathan, Frobenius splitting and cohomology vanishing for Schubert varieties, Annals of Math. 122 (1985), 27--40). The main result is that a non-zero higher direct image under a proper map of the ideal sheaf of a compatibly Frobenius split subvariety can not have a support whose inverse image is contained in that subvariety. Earlier vanishing theorems for Frobenius split varieties were based on direct limits and Serre's vanishing theorem, but our theorem is based on inverse limits and Grothendieck's theorem on formal functions. In this paper we study the geometry of (M, G) by using the ideas developed in [Michor, 1980]. With that differentiable structure on M it is possible to use variational principles and so we start in section 2 by computing geodesics as the curves in M minimizing the energy functional. From the geodesic equation, the covariant derivative of the Levi-Civita connection can be obtained, and that provides a direct method for computing the curvature of the manifold. Christoffel symbol and curvature turn out to be pointwise in M and so, although the mappings involved in the definition of the Ricci tensor and the scalar curvature have no trace, in our case we can define the concepts of ”Ricci like curvature” and ”scalar like curvature”. The main aim of this paper is to present the ideas which lead first to the solution of the unitarizability problem for $\GL(n)$ over nonarchimedean local fields and to the recognition that the same result holds over archimedean local fields, a result which was proved by Vogan using an internal approach. Let us say that the approach that we are going to present may be characterized as external. At no point do we go into the internal structure of representations., Comment: 38 pages. In this paper we isolate the notion of Stratified class forcing and show that Stratification implies cofinality-preservation and is preserved by iterations with the appropriate support. Many familiar class forcings are stratified and therefore can be simultaneously iterated without changing cofinalities, provided the proper support is used. Easton forcing, Backward Easton forcings and some modifications of Jensen coding are stratified. Jensen coding is not stratified but instead obeys a related property, Delta-Stratification, which is also preservedby iteration with an appropriate larger support.

Let $C$ be a smooth plane curve of degree $d$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. A base point free complete very special linear system $g^r_n$ on $C$ is trivial if there exists an integer $m\ge 0$ and an effective divisor $E$ on $C$ of degree $md-n$ such that $g^r_n=|mg^2_d-E|$ and $r=(m^2+3m)/2-(md-n)$. This paper generalizes classical results of Griffiths, Dolgachev and Steenbrink on the cohomology of hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. Given a $d$-dimensional projective simplicial toric variety $P$ and an ample hypersurface $X$ defined by an polynomial $f$ in the homogeneous coordinate ring $S$ of $P$ (as defined in an earlier paper of the first author), we show that the graded pieces of the Hodge filtration on $H^d(P - X)$ are naturally isomorphic to certain graded pieces of $S/J(f)$, where $J(f)$ is the Jacobian ideal of $f$. We then discuss how this relates to the primitive cohomology of $X$. Also, if $T$ is the torus contained in $X$, then the intersection of $X$ and $T$ is an affine hypersurface in $T$, and we show how recent results of the second author can be stated using various ideals in the ring $S$. To prove our results, we must give a careful description (in terms of $S$) of $d$-forms and $(d-1)$-forms on the toric variety $P$. For completeness, we also provide a proof of the Bott-Steenbrink-Danilov vanishing theorem for simplicial toric varieties. Let $X$ be a hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\Bbb P^n$ and $F_X$ be the scheme of $\Bbb P^r$'s contained in $X$. If $X$ is generic, then $F_X$ will have the expected dimension (or empty) and its class in the Chow ring of $G(r+1,n+1)$ is given by the top Chern class of the vector bundle $S^dU^*$, where $U$ is the universal subbundle on the Grassmannian $G(r+1,n+1)$. When we deform a generic $X$ into a degenerate $X_0$, the dimension of $F_X$ can jump. In this case, there is a subscheme $F_{lim}$ of $F_{X_0}$ with the expected dimension which consists of limiting $\Bbb P^r$'s in $X_0$ with respect to a general deformation. The simplest example is the well-known case of $27$ lines in a generic cubic surface. If we degenerate the surface into the union of a plane and a quadric, then there are infinitely many lines in the union. Which $27$ lines are the limiting ones and how many of them are in the plane and how many of them are in the quadric? Let $C \subset P^{g-1}$ be a smooth canonical curve of genus $g \geq 3$. The purpose of this article is to further develop a method to classify varieties having $C$ as their curve section, using Gaussian map computations. In a previous article a careful analysis of the degeneration to the cone over the hyperplane section was made for _prime_ Fano threefolds, that is Fano threefolds whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane bundle. In this article we extend this method and classify Fano threefolds of higher index (which still have Picard number one). We are also able to classify Mukai varieties, i.e. varieties of dimension four or more with canonical curve sections., Comment: 22 pages, fairly plain TeX; in the corrigendum, added below the paper, we correct a mistake in the statement and proof of Lemma 2.3(d)

The complex Monge-Ampère operator ( d d c ) n (dd^c)^n is an important tool in complex analysis. It would be interesting to find the right notion of convergence u j → u u_j\to u such that ( d d c u j ) n → ( d d c u ) n (dd^cu_j)^n\to (dd^cu)^n in the weak topology. In this paper, using the C n − 1 C_{n-1} -capacity, we give a sufficient condition of the weak convergence ( d d c u j ) n → ( d d c u ) n (dd^cu_j)^n\to (dd^cu)^n . We also show that our condition is quite sharp in some case.

The way in which way Kolmogorov complexity and instance complexity affect properties of recursively enumerable (r.e.) sets is studied. The well-known $2\log n$ upper bound on the Kolmogorov complexity of initial segments of r. e. sets is shown to be optimal, and the Turing degrees of r. e. sets which attain this bound are characterized. The main part of the paper is concerned with instance complexity, introduced by Ko, Orponen, Schoning, and Watanabe in 1986, as a measure of the complexity of individual instances of a decision problem. They conjectured that for every r. e. nonrecursive set, the instance complexity is infinitely often at least as high as the Kolmogorov complexity. The conjecture is refuted by constructing an r. e. nonrecursive set with instance complexity logarithmic in the Kolmogorov complexity. This bound is optimal up to an additive constant. In the other extreme, the conjecture is established for many classes of complete sets, such as weak-truth-table-complete (wtt-complete) and Q-complete sets. However, there is a Turing-complete set for which it fails.

In this paper we prove that no complex surface of general type is diffeomorphic to a rational surface, thereby completing the smooth classification of rational surfaces and the proof of the Van de Ven conjecture on the smooth invariance of Kodaira dimension., Comment: 34 pages, AMS-TeX

Given an operator $T:U_X(\Sigma)\to Y$ or ${T:U(\Sigma)\to Y$, one may consider the net of conditional expectation operators $(T_\pi)$ directed by refinement of the partitions $\pi$. It has been shown previously that $(T_\pi)$ does not always converge to $T$. This paper gives several conditions under which this convergence does occur, including complete characterizations when $X={\bold R}$ or when $X\sp *$ has the Radon-Nikod\'ym property.

In this part of the series, we shall investigate Deligne-Mumford semistable reductions from the point of view of numerical invariants. As an application, we obtain two numerical criterions for a base change to be stabilizing, and for a fibration to be isotrivial. We also obtain a canonical class inequality for any fibration. For the generalized Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials\(P_n^{\left( {\alpha _n ,\beta _n } \right)} \left( x \right),L_n^{\left( {\alpha _n } \right)} \left( x \right),H_n^{\left( {\gamma _n } \right)} \left( x \right)\), the limit distributions of the zeros are found, when the sequences α n or β n tend to infinity with a larger order thann. The derivation uses special properties of the sequences in the corresponding recurrence formulas. The results are used to give second-order approximations for the largest and smallest zero which improve (and generalize) the limit statements in a paper by Moak, Saff, and Varga [11].

Let $\Sigma$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, not necessarily connected, with Lie algebra $g$, endowed with an adjoint action invariant scalar product, let $\xi \colon P \to \Sigma$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and pick a Riemannian metric and orientation on $\Sigma$ so that the corresponding Yang-Mills equations are defined. In an earlier paper we determined the local structure of the moduli space $N(\xi)$ of central Yang-Mills connections on $\xi$ near an arbitrary point. Here we show that the decomposition of $N(\xi)$ into connected components of orbit types of central Yang-Mills connections is a stratification in the strong (i.~e. Whitney) sense; furthermore each stratum, being a smooth manifold, inherits a finite volume symplectic structure from the given data. This complements, in a way, results of {\smc Atiyah-Bott} in that it will in general decompose further the critical sets of the corresponding Yang-Mills functional into smooth pieces., Comment: 10 pages

In the study of polynomials acting on Banach spaces, the weak topology is not such a good tool as in the case of linear operators, due to the bad behaviour of the polynomials with respect to the weak convergence. For example,is a continuous polynomial taking a weakly null sequence into a sequence having no weakly Cauchy subsequences. In this paper we show that the situation is not so bad for unconditional series. Recall that is a weakly unconditionally Cauchy series (in short a w.u.C. series) in a Banach space E if for every f ε E* we have that and is an unconditionally converging series (in short an u.c. series) if every subseries is norm convergent.

Geometric Invariant Theory gives a method for constructing quotients for group actions on algebraic varieties which in many cases appear as moduli spaces parametrizing isomorphism classes of geometric objects (vector bundles, polarized varieties, etc.). The quotient depends on a choice of an ample linearized line bundle. Two choices are equivalent if they give rise to identical quotients. A priori, there are infinitely many choices since there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of linearized ample line bundles. Hence several fundamental questions naturally arise. Is the set of equivalence classes, and hence the set of non-isomorphic quotients, finite? How does the quotient vary under change of the equivalence class? In this paper we give partial answers to these questions in the case of actions of reductive algebraic groups on nonsingular projective algebraic varieties. We shall show that among ample line bundles which give projective geometric quotients there are only finitely many equivalence classes. These classes span certain convex subsets (chambers) in a certain convex cone in Euclidean space; and when we cross a wall separating one chamber from another, the corresponding quotient undergoes a birational transformation which is similar to a Mori flip., Comment: Plain Tex, Revised version, to appear in Publ. Letting $E$, $F$ be Banach spaces, the main two results of this paper are the following: (1) If every (linear bounded) operator $E\rightarrow F$ is unconditionally converging, then every polynomial from $E$ to $F$ is unconditionally converging (definition as in the linear case). (2) If $E$ has the Dunford-Pettis property and every operator $E\rightarrow F$ is weakly compact, then every $k$-linear mapping from $E^k$ into $F$ takes weak Cauchy sequences into norm convergent sequences. In particular, every polynomial from $\ell_\infty$ into a space containing no copy of $\ell_\infty$ is completely continuous. This solves a problem raised by the authors in a previous paper, where they showed that there exist nonweakly compact polynomials from $\ell_\infty$ into any nonreflexive space.

The main geometric result of this paper is that given any family of surfaces of general type f:X-->B, for sufficiently large n the fiber product X^n_B dominates a variety of general type. This result is especially interesting when it is combined with Lang's Conjecture. This states that for a variety V of general type over a number field K, the K rational points V(K) are not Zariski dense in V. This paper first generalises the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem to the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities. The deformation space of such a Calabi-Yau threefold is no longer smooth, but the general principle is that the obstructions to deforming such a threefold are precisely the obstructions to deforming the singularities of the threefold. Secondly, these results are applied to smoothing singular Calabi-Yau threefolds with crepant resolutions. Any such Calabi-Yau threefold with isolated complete intersection singularities which are not ordinary double points is smoothable. A Calabi-Yau threefold with non-complete intersection isolated singularities is proved to be smoothable under much stronger hypotheses.

Let $G$ be a reductive linear algebraic group. The simplest example of a projective homogeneous $G$-variety in characteristic $p$, not isomorphic to a flag variety, is the divisor $x_0 y_0^p+x_1 y_1^p+x_2 y_2^p=0$ in $P^2\times P^2$, which is $SL_3$ modulo a non-reduced stabilizer containing the upper triangular matrices. In this paper embeddings of projective homogeneous spaces viewed as $G/H$, where $H$ is any subgroup scheme containing a Borel subgroup, are studied. We prove that $G/H$ can be identified with the orbit of the highest weight line in the projective space over the simple $G$-representation $L(\lambda)$ of a certain highest weight $\lambda$. This leads to some strange embeddings especially in characteristic $2$, where we give an example in the $C_4$-case lying on the boundary of Hartshorne's conjecture on complete intersections. Finally we prove that ample line bundles on $G/H$ are very ample. This gives a counterexample to Kodaira type vanishing with a very ample line bundle, answering an old question of Raynaud., Comment: 10 pages, AMS-LaTeX

In this paper we construct and study isoperimetric functions at infinity for Hadamard manifolds. These quasi-isometry invariants give a measure of the spread of geodesics in such a manifold.

The main result of the paper is that if $A$ is an abelian variety over a subfield $F$ of ${\bold C}$, and $A$ has purely multiplicative reduction at a discrete valuation of $F$, then the Hodge group of $A$ is semisimple. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hodge group to be semisimple. We obtain bounds on certain torsion subgroups for abelian varieties which do not have purely multiplicative reduction at a given discrete valuation, and therefore obtain bounds on torsion for abelian varieties, defined over number fields, whose Hodge groups are not semisimple., Comment: This is an updated version of the paper. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. The first is to give a tutorial introduction to the Sarkisov program, a 3-dimensional generalization of Castelnuovo-N\"other Theorem ``untwisting" birational maps between Mori fiber spaces, which was recently established by Corti after Sarkisov and Reid. The second is an attempt to give a logarithmic generalization of the program, introducing the notion of the Sarkisov relation. Iwahori-Hecke algebras for the infinite series of complex reflection groups G(r, p, n) were constructed recently in the work of Ariki and Koike (AK), Broue and Malle (BM), and Ariki (Ari). In this paper we give Murnaghan-Nakayama type for- mulas for computing the irreducible characters of these algebras. Our method is a gen- eralization of that in our earlier paper (HR) in which we derived Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for the characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the classical Weyl groups. In both papers we have been motivated by C. Greene (Gre), who gave a new derivation of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for irreducible symmetric group characters by summing diagonal matrix entries in Young's seminormal representations. We use the analogous representations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of G(r, p, n) given by Ariki and Koike (AK) and Ariki (Ari). The finite irreducible complex reflection groups come in three infinite families: the symmetric groups Sn on n letters; the wreath product groups r Sn ,w here r denotes the cyclic group of order r; and a series of index-p subgroups G(r, p, n )o f r S n for each positive integer p that divides r. In the classification of finite irreducible reflection groups, besides these infinite families Sn, r ,a nd G ( r , p , n), there exist only 34 excep- tional irreducible reflection groups, see (ST). A formula for the irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras for Sn is known (Ram), (KW), (vdJ). This formula is a q-analogue of the classical Murnaghan- Nakayama formula for computing the irreducible characters of Sn. Similar formulas for the characters of the groups G(r, p, n) are classically known, see (Mac), (Ste), (AK), (Osi) and the references there. Formulas of this type are also known for the Iwahori-Hecke al- gebras of Weyl groups of types B and D (HR), (Pfe1), (Pfe2). Recently, Iwahori-Hecke algebras have been constructed for the groups r Sn and G(r, p, n) (AK), (BM), (Ari). In this paper we derive Murnaghan-Nakayama type formulas for computing the irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras that correspond to r Sn and G(r, p, n). Hoefsmit (Hfs) has given explicit analogues of Young's seminormal representations for the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of types An 1, Bn ,a nd D n. Ariki and Koike, (AK) and (Ari), have constructed "Hoefsmit-analogues" of Young's seminormal representations

This paper continues the study of finite-type invariants of homology spheres studied by Ohtsuki and Garoufalidis. We apply the surgery classification of links to give a diagrammatic description, using ideas of Ohtsuki. This uses a computation of the surgery equivalence classes of pure braids. We show that the order of any invariant, in Ohtsukis sense, is a multiple of 3. The notion of Macaulayfication, which is analogous of the desingularization, was introduced by Faltings in 1978 and he construct a Macaulayfication of quasi-projective scheme whose non-Cohen-Macaulay locus is of dimension 0 or 1 by a characteristic free method. In this paper, we gave a Macaulayfication of a quasi-projective scheme whose non-Cohen-Macaulay locus is of dimension 2. In this paper we introduce two classes of Poisson brackets on algebras (or on sheaves of algebras). We call them locally free and nonsingular Poisson brackets. Using the Fedosov's method we prove that any locally free nonsingular Poisson bracket can be quantized. In particular, it follows from this that all Poisson brackets on an arbitrary field of characteristic zero can be quantized. The operation of tensor product of Cohomological Field Theories (or algebras over genus zero moduli operad) introduced in an earlier paper by the authors is described in full detail, and the proof of a theorem on additive relations between strata classes is given. This operation is a version of the Kuenneth formula for quantum cohomology. A regular vertex operator algebra is a vertex operator algebra such that any weak module (without grading) is a direct sum of ordinary irreducible modules. In this paper we give several sufficient conditions under which a rational vertex operator algebra is regular. We prove that the moonshine module vertex operator algebra $V^{\natural},$ the vertex operator algebras $L(l,0)$ associated with the integrable representations of affine algebras of level $l,$ the vertex operator algebras $L(c_{p,q},0)$ associated with irreducible highest weight representations for the discrete series of the Virasoro algebra and the vertex operator algebras $V_L$ associated with positive definite even lattices $L$ are regular. Our result for $L(l,0)$ implies that any restricted integrable module of level $l$ for the corresponding affine Lie algebra is a direct sum of irreducible highest weight integrable modules. The space $V_L$ in general is a vertex algebra if $L$ is not positive definite. In this case we establish the complete reducibility of any weak module., Comment: Latex, 15 pages

In this paper we define a quantum version of the ``fusion'' tensor product of two representations of an affine Kac-Moody algebra.It is replaced by what we call fusion action of the category of finite-dimensional representations of quantum affine algebra on its highest weight representations. We construct a quantum version of the associativity constraint. This paper relates skein spaces based on the Kauffman bracket and spin structures. A spin structure on an oriented 3-manifold provides an isomorphism between the skein space for parameter A and the skein space for parameter -A. There is an application to Penrose's binor calculus, which is related to the tensor calculus of representations of SU(2). The perspective developed here is that this tensor calculus is actually a calculus of spinors on the plane, and the matrices a re determined by a type of spinor transport which generalises to links in any 3-manifold. A second application shows that there is a skein space which is the algebra of functions on the set of spin structures for the 3-manifold., Comment: 9 pages, amstex, 15 figures.
