In a series of papers [Pan0], [Pan1], [Pan2], [Pan3] we give a detailed and better structured proof of the Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture for semi-local regular rings containing a finite field. The outline of the proof is the same as in [P1],[P2],[P3]. If the semi-local regular ring contains an infinite field, then the conjecture is proved in [FP]. Thus the conjecture is true for regular local rings containing a field. The present paper is the one [Pan1] in that new series. Theorem 1.1 is one of the main result of the paper. It is also one of the key steps in the proof of the Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture for semi-local regular rings containing a field (see [Pan3]). In this paper, we give a resolution of the generalized Fermat equations $$x^5 + y^5 = 3 z^n \text{ and } x^{13} + y^{13} = 3 z^n,$$ for all integers $n \ge 2$, and all integers $n \ge 2$ which are not a multiple of $7$, respectively, using the modular method with Frey elliptic curves over totally real fields. The results require a refined application of the multi-Frey technique, which we show to be effective in new ways to reduce the bounds on the exponents $n$. We also give a number of results for the equations $x^5 + y^5 = d z^n$, where $d = 1, 2$, under additional local conditions on the solutions. Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p>0$. Assume that $p$ is good for the root system of $G$ and that the covering map $G_{sc} \rightarrow G$ is separable. In previous work we proved the existence of a (not necessarily unique) Springer isomorphism for $G$ that behaved like the exponential map on the resticted nullcone of $G$. In the present paper we give a formal definition of these maps, which we call `generalized exponential maps.' We provide an explicit and uniform construction of such maps for all root systems, demonstrate their existence over $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, and give a complete parameterization of all such maps. One application is that this gives a uniform approach to dealing with the "saturation problem" for a unipotent element $u$ in $G$, providing a new proof of the known result that $u$ lies inside a subgroup of $C_G(u)$ that is isomorphic to a truncated Witt group. We also develop a number of other explicit and new computations for $\mathfrak{g}$ and for $G$. This paper grew out of an attempt to answer a series of questions posed to us by P. We prove that any rigid representation of $\pi_1\Sigma_g$ in $\mathrm{Homeo}_+(S^1)$ with Euler number at least $g$ is necessarily semi-conjugate to a discrete, faithful representation into $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. Combined with earlier work of Matsumoto, this precisely characterizes Fuchsian actions by a topological rigidity property. We extend the classical Fuller index, and use this to prove that for a certain general class of vector fields $X$ on a compact smooth manifold, if a homotopy of smooth non-singular vector fields starting at $X$ has no sky catastrophes as defined by the paper, then the time 1 limit of the homotopy has periodic orbits. This class of vector fields includes the Hopf vector field on $S ^{2k+1} $. A sky catastrophe, is a kind of bifurcation originally discovered by Fuller. This answers a natural question that existed since the time of Fuller's foundational papers. The cohesion-tension theory expounds the crude sap ascent thanks to the negative pressure generated by evaporation of water from leaves. Nevertheless, trees pose multiple challenges and seem to live in unphysical conditions: the negative pressure increases cavitation; it is possible to obtain a water equilibrium between connected parts where one is at a positive pressure and the other one is at negative pressure; no theory is able to satisfactorily account for the refilling of vessels after embolism events. A theoretical form of our paper in the Journal of Theoretical Biology is proposed together with new results: a continuum mechanics model of the disjoining pressure concept refers to the Derjaguin School of physical chemistry. A comparison between liquid behaviour both in tight-filled microtubes and in liquid thin-films is offered when the pressure is negative in liquid bulks and is positive in liquid thin-films and vapour bulks. In embolized xylem microtubes, when the air-vapour pocket pressure is greater than the air-vapour bulk pressure, a refilling flow occurs between the air-vapour domains to empty the air-vapour pockets although the liquid-bulk pressure remains negative. The model has a limit of validity taking the maximal size of trees into account. These results drop inkling that the disjoining pressure is an efficient tool to study biological liquids in contact with substrates at a nanoscale range., Comment: The paper is a review and overlap of my different papers about the watering of trees as a mathematical development of my paper in The Journal of Theoretical Biology. The goal of this paper is to investigate the stability of the Helmholtz equation in the high- frequency regime with non-smooth and rapidly oscillating coefficients on bounded domains. Existence and uniqueness of the problem can be proved using the unique continuation principle in Fredholm's alternative. However, this approach does not give directly a coefficient-explicit energy estimate. We present a new theoretical approach for the one-dimensional problem and find that for a new class of coefficients, including coefficients with an arbitrary number of discontinuities, the stability constant (i.e., the norm of the solution operator) is bounded by a term independent of the number of jumps. We emphasize that no periodicity of the coefficients is required. By selecting the wave speed function in a certain \resonant" way, we construct a class of oscillatory configurations, such that the stability constant grows exponentially in the frequency. This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem to 2D micropolar equations without angular viscosity in a smooth bounded domain. It is shown that such a system admits a unique and global weak solution. The main idea of this paper is to fully exploit the structure of this system and establish high order estimates via introducing an auxiliary field which is at the energy level of one order lower than micro-rotation., Comment: 19 pages

The second author introduced with I. T\"orm\"a a two-player word-building game [Playing with Subshifts, Fund. Inform. 132 (2014), 131--152]. The game has a predetermined (possibly finite) choice sequence $\alpha_1$, $\alpha_2$, $\ldots$ of integers such that on round $n$ the player $A$ chooses a subset $S_n$ of size $\alpha_n$ of some fixed finite alphabet and the player $B$ picks a letter from the set $S_n$. The outcome is determined by whether the word obtained by concatenating the letters $B$ picked lies in a prescribed target set $X$ (a win for player $A$) or not (a win for player $B$). Typically, we consider $X$ to be a subshift. The winning shift $W(X)$ of a subshift $X$ is defined as the set of choice sequences for which $A$ has a winning strategy when the target set is the language of $X$. The winning shift $W(X)$ mirrors some properties of $X$. For instance, $W(X)$ and $X$ have the same entropy. Virtually nothing is known about the structure of the winning shifts of subshifts common in combinatorics on words. In this paper, we study the winning shifts of subshifts generated by marked uniform substitutions, and show that these winning shifts, viewed as subshifts, also have a substitutive structure. Particularly, we give an explicit description of the winning shift for the generalized Thue-Morse substitutions. It is known that $W(X)$ and $X$ have the same factor complexity. As an example application, we exploit this connection to give a simple derivation of the first difference and factor complexity functions of subshifts generated by marked substitutions. In this paper we study curvature types of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional (normed or) Minkowski spaces. By endowing the surface with a normal vector field, which is a transversal vector field given by the ambient Birkhoff orthogonality, we get an analogue of the Gauss map. Then we can define concepts of principal, Gaussian, and mean curvatures in terms of the eigenvalues of the differential of this map. Considering planar sections containing the normal field, we also define normal curvatures at each point of the surface, and with respect to each tangent direction. We investigate the relations between these curvature types. Further on we prove that, under an additional hypothesis, a compact, connected surface without boundary whose Minkowski Gaussian curvature is constant must be a Minkowski sphere. Since existing literature on the subject of our paper is widely scattered, in the introductory part also a survey of related results is given.

We investigate the large $n$ asymptotics of the $n$-th eigenvalue for a class of unbounded self-adjoint operators defined by infinite Jacobi matrices with discrete spectrum. In the case of the quantum Rabi model we obtain the first three terms of the asymptotics which determine the parameters of the model. When an upstream steady uniform supersonic flow impinges onto a symmetric straight-sided wedge, governed by the Euler equations, there are two possible steady oblique shock configurations if the wedge angle is less than the detachment angle -- the steady weak shock with supersonic or subsonic downstream flow (determined by the wedge angle that is less or larger than the sonic angle) and the steady strong shock with subsonic downstream flow, both of which satisfy the entropy condition. The fundamental issue -- whether one or both of the steady weak and strong shocks are physically admissible solutions -- has been vigorously debated over the past eight decades. In this paper, we survey some recent developments on the stability analysis of the steady shock solutions in both the steady and dynamic regimes. For the static stability, we first show how the stability problem can be formulated as an initial-boundary value type problem and then reformulate it into a free boundary problem when the perturbation of both the upstream steady supersonic flow and the wedge boundary are suitably regular and small, and we finally present some recent results on the static stability of the steady supersonic and transonic shocks. For the dynamic stability for potential flow, we first show how the stability problem can be formulated as an initial-boundary value problem and then use the self-similarity of the problem to reduce it into a boundary value problem and further reformulate it into a free boundary problem, and we finally survey some recent developments in solving this free boundary problem for the existence of the Prandtl-Meyer configurations that tend to the steady weak supersonic or transonic oblique shock solutions as time goes to infinity. We finish the classification, begun in two earlier papers, of all simple fusion systems over finite nonabelian p-groups with an abelian subgroup of index p. In particular, this gives many new examples illustrating the enormous variety of exotic examples that can arise. In addition, we classify all simple fusion systems over infinite nonabelian discrete p-toral groups with an abelian subgroup of index p. In all of these cases (finite or infinite), we reduce the problem to one of listing all 𝔽pG-modules (for G finite) satisfying certain conditions: a problem which was solved in the earlier paper [15] using the classification of finite simple groups.

It is an important problem in differential geometry to find non-naturally reductive homogeneous Einstein metrics on homogeneous manifolds. In this paper, we consider this problem for some coset spaces of compact simple Lie groups. A new method to construct invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics on normal homogeneous Einstein manifolds is presented. In particular, we show that on the standard homogeneous Einstein manifolds, except for some special cases, there exist plenty of such metrics. A further interesting result of this paper is that on some compact semisimple Lie groups, there exist a large number of left invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics which are not product metrics., Comment: 29 pages

In this paper we consider the Prym map for double coverings of curves of genus $g$ ramified at $r>0$ points. That is, the map associating to a double ramified covering its Prym variety. The generic Torelli theorem states that the Prym map is generically injective as soon as the dimension of the space of coverings is less or equal to the dimension of the space of polarized abelian varieties. We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map in the cases of double coverings of curves with: (a) $g=2$, $r=6$, and (b) $g= 5$, $r=2$. In the first case the proof is constructive and can be extended to the range $r\ge \max \{6,\frac 23(g+2) \}$. For (b) we study the fibre along the locus of the intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds to conclude the generic injectivity. This completes the work of Marcucci and Pirola who proved this theorem for all the other cases, except for the bielliptic case $g=1$ (solved later by Marcucci and the first author), and the case $g=3, r=4$ considered previously by Nagaraj and Ramanan, and also by Bardelli, Ciliberto and Verra where the degree of the map is $3$. The paper closes with an appendix by Alessandro Verra with an independent result, the rationality of the moduli space of coverings with $g=2,r=6$, whose proof is self-contained., An inaccuracy in Proposition 2.4 has been fixed. We explore the relationship between Brouwer's intuitionistic mathematics and Euclidean geometry. Brouwer wrote a paper in 1949 called "The contradictority of elementary geometry". In that paper, he showed that a certain classical consequence of the parallel postulate implies Markov's principle, which he found intuitionistically unacceptable. But Euclid's geometry, having served as a beacon of clear and correct reasoning for two millenia, is not so easily discarded. Brouwer started from a "theorem" that is not in Euclid, and requires Markov's principle for its proof. That means that Brouwer's paper did not address the question whether Euclid's "Elements" really requires Markov's principle. In this paper we show that there is a coherent theory of "non-Markovian Euclidean geometry." We show in some detail that our theory is an adequate formal rendering of (at least) Euclid's Book~I, and suffices to define geometric arithmetic, thus refining the author's previous investigations (which include Markov's principle as an axiom). Philosophically, Brouwer's proof that his version of the parallel postulate implies Markov's principle could be read just as well as geometric evidence for the truth of Markov's principle, if one thinks the geometrical "intersection theorem" with which Brouwer started is geometrically evident., Comment: 61 pages, 18 figures

In this survey paper, we give an overview of our recent works on the study of the $W$-entropy for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on super-Ricci flows and the Langevin deformation on Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds. Inspired by Perelman's seminal work on the entropy formula for the Ricci flow, we prove the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(K, m)$-condition, and the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the time dependent Witten Laplacian on $n$-dimensional compact manifolds equipped with a $(K, m)$-super Ricci flow, where $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $m\in [n, \infty]$. Furthermore, we prove an analogue of the $W$-entropy formula for the geodesic flow on the Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds. Our result recaptures an important result due to Lott and Villani on the displacement convexity of the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy on Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature. To better understand the similarity between above two $W$-entropy formulas, we introduce the Langevin deformation of geometric flows on the cotangent bundle over the Wasserstein space and prove an extension of the $W$-entropy formula for the Langevin deformation. Finally, we make a discussion on the $W$-entropy for the Ricci flow from the point of view of statistical mechanics and probability theory., Comment: Survey paper. In this paper we study para-Kenmotsu manifolds. We characterize this manifolds by tensor equations and study their properties. We are devoted to a study of ?-Einstein manifolds. We show that a locally conformally flat para-Kenmotsu manifold is a space of constant negative sectional curvature -1 and we prove that if a para-Kenmotsu manifold is a space of constant ?-para-holomorphic sectional curvature H, then it is a space of constant sectional curvature and H = -1. Finally the object of the present paper is to study a 3-dimensional para-Kenmotsu manifold, satisfying certain curvature conditions. Among other, it is proved that any 3-dimensional para-Kenmotsu manifold with ?-parallel Ricci tensor is of constant scalar curvature and any 3-dimensional para-Kenmotsu manifold satisfying cyclic Ricci tensor is a manifold of constant negative sectional curvature -1.

The original formulae of Kuznetsov for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ allowed one to study either a spectral average via Kloosterman sums or to study an average of Kloosterman sums via a spectral interpretation. In previous papers, we have developed the spectral Kuznetsov formulae at the minimal weights for $SL(3,\mathbb{Z}))$, and in these formulae, the big-cell Kloosterman sums occur with weight functions attached to four different integral kernels, according to the choice of signs of the indices. These correspond to the $J$- and $K$-Bessel functions in the case of $GL(2)$. In this paper, we demonstrate a linear combination of the spherical and weight one $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ Kuznetsov formulae that isolates one particular integral kernel, which is the spherical $GL(3)$ Whittaker function. Using the known inversion formula of Wallach, we give the first arithmetic Kuznetsov formula for $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ and use it to study smooth averages and the Kloosterman zeta function attached to this particular choice of signs., Comment: 12 pages, retracts the meromorphic continuation of the unweighted Kloosterman zeta function

In this paper non-transversal intersection of the free and fixed boundary is shown to hold in any dimension for obstacle problems generated by fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic operators. It has been 40 years since Lawson and Osserman introduced the three minimal cones associated with Dirichlet problems in their 1977 Acta paper [13] . The first cone was shown area-minimizing by Harvey and Lawson in the celebrated paper [10] . In this paper, we confirm that the other two are also area-minimizing. In fact, we show that every Lawson–Osserman cone of type ( n , p , 2 ) constructed in [26] is area-minimizing.

In the first part of this paper, we consider, in the context of an arbitrary hyperplane arrangement, the map between compactly supported cohomology to the usual cohomology of a local system. A formula (i.e., an explicit algebraic de Rham representative) for a generalized version of this map is obtained. These results are applied in the second part to invariant theory: Schechtman and Varchenko connect invariant theoretic objects to the cohomology of local systems on complements of hyperplane arrangements. The first part of this paper is then used, following and completing arguments of Looijenga, to determine the image of invariants in cohomology. In suitable cases (e.g., corresponding to positive integral levels), the space of invariants is shown to acquire a mixed Hodge structure over a cyclotomic field. We investigate the Hodge filtration on the space of invariants, and characterize the subspace of conformal blocks in Hodge theoretic terms., Comment: 37 pages, comments are welcome

In analogy with the study of representations of $GL_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$, where $F$ is a local field, in this paper we study representations of $U_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$. (Only quasi-split unitary groups are considered in this paper since they are the only ones which contain $Sp_{2n}(F)$.) We prove that there are no cuspidal representations of $U_{2n}(F)$ distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$ for $F$ a non-archimedean local field. We also prove the corresponding global theorem that there are no cuspidal representations of $U_{2n}({\mathbb A}_k)$ with nonzero period integral on $Sp_{2n}(k) \backslash Sp_{2n}({\mathbb A}_k)$ for $k$ any number field or a function field. We completely classify representations of quasi-split unitary group in four variables over local and global fields with nontrivial symplectic periods using methods of theta correspondence. We propose a conjectural answer for the classification of all representations of a quasi-split unitary group distinguished by $Sp_{2n}(F)$., Comment: minor changes; to appear in the Transactions of the AMS

This is our third paper in a series on the gravitational instantons. In this paper, we classify ALG and ALH gravitational instantons. In ALG case, we extend Hein's construction slightly and show that it's the only ALG gravitational instanton. We construct virtual cycles on moduli spaces of perturbed gauged Witten equation over a fixed smooth r -spin curve, under the framework of [TX15]. Together with the wall-crossing formula proved in the companion paper [TX19], it completes the construction of the correlation function for the gauged linear sigma model announced in [TX16] as well as the proof of its invariance., Comment: The original version is split into two parts as requested by the journal. We apply the local removable singularity theorem for minimal laminations and the local picture theorem on the scale of topology to obtain two descriptive results for certain possibly singular minimal laminations of $\mathbb{R}^3$. These two global structure theorems will be applied in forthcoming papers to obtain bounds on the index and the number of ends of complete, embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus and finite topology in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and to prove that a complete, embedded minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite genus and a countable number of ends is proper., Comment: 43 pages, 7 figures. This paper describes the analysis of Lagrange interpolation errors on tetrahedrons. In many textbooks, the error analysis of Lagrange interpolation is conducted under geometric assumptions such as shape regularity or the (generalized) maximum angle condition. In this paper, we present a new estimation in which the error is bounded in terms of the diameter and projected circumradius of the tetrahedron. Because we do not impose any geometric restrictions on the tetrahedron itself, our error estimation may be applied to any tetrahedralizations of domains including very thin tetrahedrons., Comment: To appear in Journal of Approximation Theory

Inspired by work of McMullen, we show that any orbit of the diagonal group in the space of lattices accumulates on the set of stable lattices. As consequences, we settle a conjecture of Ramharter concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the Mordell constant, and reduce Minkowski's conjecture on products of linear forms to a geometric question, yielding two new proofs of the conjecture in dimensions up to 7., Comment: This paper was part of the paper "On stable lattices and the diagonal group" (arXiv:1309.4025) which was split into three shorter papers (now all on arXiv) following the referee's request

A recent paper of Shekhar compares the ranks of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ for which there is an isomorphism $E_1[p] \simeq E_2[p]$ as $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbf{Q}}/\mathbf{Q})$-modules, where $p$ is a prime of good ordinary reduction for both curves. In this paper we prove an analogous result in the case where $p$ is a prime of good supersingular reduction., Comment: fixed a persistent typo in the results of Section 3. this typo led to the original example for p=3 being incorrect; it has been replaced with a correct example

Let $X,X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent identically distributed random variables. In this paper we study the behavior of concentration functions of weighted sums $\sum_{k=1}^{n}X_ka_k $ with respect to the arithmetic structure of coefficients $a_k$ in the context of the Littlewood--Offord problem. In recent papers of Eliseeva, G\"otze and Zaitsev, we discussed the relations between the inverse principles stated by Nguyen, Tao and Vu and similar principles formulated by Arak in his papers from the 1980's. Classical settings of discrete and continuous orthogonal expansions, like those of Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi, are associated with second order differential operators playing the role of the Laplacian. These depend on certain type parameters that are usually restricted to a half-line, or a product of half-lines if higher dimensions are considered. Following earlier research done by Hajmirzaahmad, we deal in this paper with Laplacians in the above-mentioned contexts with no restrictions on the type parameters and bring to attention naturally associated orthogonal systems that in fact involve the classical ones, but are different. This reveals new frameworks related to classical orthogonal expansions and thus new potentially rich research areas, at least from the harmonic analysis perspective. To support the last claim we focus on maximal operators of multi-dimensional Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi semigroups, with unrestricted type parameters, and prove that they satisfy weak type (1, 1) estimates with respect to the appropriate measures. Generally, these measures are not (locally) finite, which makes a contrast with the classical situations and generates new difficulties. A significant result of the paper is a new proof of the weak type (1, 1) estimate for the classical multi-dimensional Laguerre semigroup maximal operator.

The theory of generalized Besov-Morrey spaces and generalized Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey spaces is developed. Generalized Morrey spaces, which T. Mizuhara and E. Nakai proposed, are equipped with a parameter and a function. The trace property is one of the main focuses of the present paper, which will clarify the role of the parameter of generalized Morrey spaces. The quarkonial decomposition is obtained as an application of atomic decomposition. In this paper we consider a new kind of inequality related to fractional integration, motivated by Gressman's paper. Based on it we investigate its multilinear analogue inequalities. Combining with the Gressman's work on multilinear integral, we establish this new kind of geometric inequalities with bilinear form and multilinear form in more general settings. Moreover, in some cases we also find the best constants and optimisers for these geometric inequalities on Euclidean spaces with Lebesgue measure settings with $L^p$ bounds.

In this paper, we show that any non-arithmetic hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complement admits no hidden symmetries. As a corollary, we conclude that a hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complement cannot irregularly cover a hyperbolic $3$-manifold. By combining this corollary with the work of Boileau and Weidmann, we obtain a characterization of $3$-manifolds with non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and rank two fundamental groups. We also show that the only commensurable hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complements are the figure-eight knot complement and the $6_{2}^{2}$ link complement. Classical mechanical systems are modeled by a symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$, and their symmetries, encoded in the action of a Lie group $G$ on $M$ by diffeomorphisms that preserves $\omega$. These actions, which are called "symplectic", have been studied in the past forty years, following the works of Atiyah, Delzant, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Heckman, Kostant, Souriau, and Sternberg in the 1970s and 1980s on symplectic actions of compact abelian Lie groups that are, in addition, of "Hamiltonian" type, i.e. they also satisfy Hamilton's equations. Since then a number of connections with combinatorics, finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems, more general symplectic actions, and topology, have flourished. In this paper we review classical and recent results on Hamiltonian and non Hamiltonian symplectic group actions roughly starting from the results of these authors. In this paper we give new explicit formulas for Faltings' $\delta$-invariant in terms of integrals of theta functions, and we deduce an explicit lower bound for $\delta$ only in terms of the genus and an explicit upper bound for the Arakelov-Green function in terms of $\delta$. Furthermore, we give a canonical extension of $\delta$ and the Zhang-Kawazumi invariant $\varphi$ to the moduli space of indecomposable principally polarised complex abelian varieties., Comment: 46 pages. This paper presents sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian paths and cycles in graphs. Letting $\lambda\left( G\right) $ denote the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G,$ the main results of the paper are: (1) Let $k\geq1,$ $n\geq k^{3}/2+k+4,$ and let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, with minimum degree $\delta\left( G\right) \geq k.$ If \[ \lambda\left( G\right) \geq n-k-1, \] then $G$ has a Hamiltonian cycle, unless $G=K_{1}\vee(K_{n-k-1}+K_{k})$ or $G=K_{k}\vee(K_{n-2k}+\overline{K}_{k})$. The current paper {establishes} criteria for the existence of principal eigenvalues of time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal systems with Direchlet type, Neumann type or periodic type boundary conditions. It is shown that such a nonlocal dispersal system has a principal eigenvalue in the following cases: the nonlocal dispersal distance is sufficiently small; the spatial inhomogeneity satisfies a so called vanishing condition; or the spatial inhomogeneity is nearly globally homogeneous. Moreover, it is shown that the principal eigenvalue of a time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal system (if it exists) is algebraically simple. A linear nonlocal dispersal system may not have a principal eigenvalue. The results established in the current paper extend those in literature for time independent or periodic nonlocal dispersal equations to time periodic cooperative nonlocal dispersal systems and {will} serve as {a} basic tool for the study of cooperative nonlinear systems with nonlocal dispersal., Comment: 15 pages

We study the behavior of zero-divisors of the double zeta-function $\zeta_2(s_1,s_2)$. In our former paper \cite{MatSho14} we studied the case $s_1=s_2$, but in the present paper we consider the more general two variable situation. We carry out numerical computations in order to trace the behavior of zero-divisors. We observe that some divisors approach the points with $s_2=0$, while other divisors approach the points which are solutions of $\zeta(s_2)=1$., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

Piecewise affine functions on subsets of $\mathbb R^m$ were studied in \cite{Ovchinnikov:02,Aliprantis:06a,Aliprantis:07a,Aliprantis:07}. In this paper we study a more general concept of a locally piecewise affine function. We characterize locally piecewise affine functions in terms of components and regions. We prove that a positive function is locally piecewise affine iff it is the supremum of a locally finite sequence of piecewise affine functions. We prove that locally piecewise affine functions are uniformly dense in $C(\mathbb R^m)$, while piecewise affine functions are sequentially order dense in $C(\mathbb R^m)$. This paper is a contribution to the study of the subgroup structure of exceptional algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. Following Serre, a closed subgroup of a semisimple algebraic group $G$ is called irreducible if it lies in no proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. In this paper we complete the classification of irreducible connected subgroups of exceptional algebraic groups, providing an explicit set of representatives for the conjugacy classes of such subgroups. Many consequences of this classification are also given. These include results concerning the representations of such subgroups on various $G$-modules: for example, the conjugacy classes of irreducible connected subgroups are determined by their composition factors on the adjoint module of $G$, with one exception. A result of Liebeck and Testerman shows that each irreducible connected subgroup $X$ of $G$ has only finitely many overgroups and hence the overgroups of $X$ form a lattice. We provide tables that give representatives of each conjugacy class of overgroups within this lattice structure. We use this to prove results concerning the subgroup structure of $G$: for example, when the characteristic is 2, there exists a maximal connected subgroup of $G$ containing a conjugate of every irreducible subgroup $A_1$ of $G$., Comment: 196 pages. Let $R=K[[x_1,...,x_s]]$ be the ring of formal power series with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic. On the ring $M_{m,n}$ of $m\times n$ matrices $A$ with entries in $R$ we consider several equivalence relations given by the action on $M_{m,n}$ of a group $G$. $G$ can be the group of automorphisms of $R$, combined with the multiplication of invertible matrices from the left, from the right, or from both sides, respectively. We call $A$ finitely $G$-determined if $A$ is $G$-equivalent to any matrix $B$ with ${A-B} \in {\mathfrak{m}^k M_{m,n}}$ for some finite integer $k$, which implies in particular that $A$ is $G$--equivalent to a matrix with polynomial entries. The classical criterion for analytic or differential map germs $f:(K^s,0) \to (K^m,0)$, $K = \mathbb{R}, \mathbb{C}$, says that $f \in M_{m,1}$ is finitely determined (with respect to various group actions) iff the tangent space to the orbit of $f$ has finite codimension in $M_{m,1}$. We extend this criterion to arbitrary matrices in $M_{m,n}$ if the characteristic of K is 0 or, more general, if the orbit map is separable. In positive characteristic however, the problem is more subtle since the orbit map is in general not separable, as we show by an example. This fact had been overlooked in previous papers. Our main result is a general sufficient criterion for finite $G$-determinacy in $M_{m,n}$ in arbitrary characteristic in terms of the tangent image of the orbit map, which we introduce in this paper. This criterion provides a computable bound for the $G$-determinacy of a matrix $A$ in $M_{m,n}$, which is new even in characteristic 0., Comment: 21 pages

This paper is concerned with the scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves, due to the presence of scatterers and of inhomogeneities in the medium. We prove a sharp stability result for the solutions to the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, with respect to variations of the scatterer and of the inhomogeneity, under minimal regularity assumptions for both of them. The stability result leads to uniform bounds on solutions to the scattering problems for an extremely general class of admissible scatterers and inhomogeneities. The uniform bounds are a key step to tackle the challenging stability issue for the corresponding inverse electromagnetic scattering problem. In this paper we establish two optimal stability results of logarithmic type for the determination of polyhedral scatterers by a minimal number of electromagnetic scattering measurements. In order to prove the stability result for the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, we study two fundamental issues in the theory of Maxwell equations: Mosco convergence for H(curl) spaces and higher integrability properties of solutions to Maxwell equations in nonsmooth domains., Comment: 48 pages. Burq-G\'erard-Tzvetkov and Hu established $L^p$ estimates ($2\le p\le \infty$) for the restriction of eigenfunctions to submanifolds. The estimates are sharp, except for the log loss at the endpoint $L^2$ estimates for submanifolds of codimension 2. It has long been believed that the log loss at the endpoint can be removed in general, while the problem is still open. So this paper is devoted to the study of sharp endpoint restriction estimates for eigenfunctions in this case. Chen and Sogge removed the log loss for the geodesics on 3-dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we generalize their result to higher dimensions and prove that the log loss can be removed for totally geodesic submanifolds of codimension 2. Moreover, on 3-dimensional manifolds, we can remove the log loss for curves with nonvanishing geodesic curvatures, and more general finite type curves. The problem in 3D is essentially related to Hilbert transforms along curves in the plane and a class of singular oscillatory integrals studied by Phong-Stein, Ricci-Stein, Pan, Seeger, Carbery-P\'erez., Comment: 17 pages

Bavard proved a duality theorem between commutator length and quasimorphisms. Burago, Ivanov and Polterovich introduced the notion of a conjugation-invariant norm which is a generalization of commutator length. Entov and Polterovich proved that Oh-Schwarz spectral invariants are subset-controlled quasimorphisms which are geralizations of quasimorphisms. In the present paper, we prove a Bavard-type duality theorem between conjugation-invariant (pseudo-)norms and subset-controlled quasimorphisms on stable groups. %We also give an application of its generalization to symplectic geometry related to Entov-Polterovich's theory on heavy subsets. In his 1990 Inventiones paper, P. Jones characterized subsets of rectifiable curves in the plane via a multiscale sum of $\beta$-numbers. These $\beta$-numbers are geometric quantities measuring how far a given set deviates from a best fitting line at each scale and location. Jones' result is a quantitative way of saying that a curve is rectifiable if and only if it has a tangent at almost every point. Moreover, computing this square sum for a curve returns the length of the curve up to multiplicative constant. K. Okikiolu extended his result from subsets of the plane to subsets of Euclidean space. G. David and S. Semmes extended the discussion to include sets of (integer) dimension larger than one, under the assumption of Ahlfors regularity and using a variant of Jones' $\beta$ numbers. In this paper we give a version of P. Jones' theorem for sets of arbitrary (integer) dimension lying in Euclidean space. We estimate the $d$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of a set in terms of an analogous sum of $\beta$-type numbers. There is no assumption of Ahlfors regularity, but rather, only of a lower bound on the Hausdorff content. We adapt David and Semmes' version of Jones' $\beta$-numbers by redefining them using a Choquet integral. A key tool in the proof is G. David and T.
