Skin effect, experimentally discovered in one dimension, describes the physical phenomenon that on an open chain, an extensive number of eigenstates of a non-Hermitian hamiltonian are localized at the end(s) of the chain. Here in two and higher dimensions, we establish a theorem that the skin effect exists, if and only if periodic-boundary spectrum of the hamiltonian covers a finite area on the complex plane. This theorem establishes the universality of the effect, because the above condition is satisfied in almost every generic non-Hermitian hamiltonian, and, unlike in one dimension, is compatible with all spatial symmetries. We propose two new types of skin effect in two and higher dimensions: the corner-skin effect where all eigenstates are localized at one corner of the system, and the geometry-dependent-skin effect where skin modes disappear for systems of a particular shape, but appear on generic polygons. An immediate corollary of our theorem is that any non-Hermitian system having exceptional points (lines) in two (three) dimensions exhibits skin effect, making this phenomenon accessible to experiments in photonic crystals, Weyl semimetals, and Kondo insulators., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Distant boundaries in linear non-Hermitian lattices can dramatically change energy eigenvalues and corresponding eigenstates in a nonlocal way. This effect is known as non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). Combining non-Hermitian skin effect with nonlinear effects can give rise to a host of novel phenomenas, which may be used for nonlinear structure designs. Here we study nonlinear non-Hermitian skin effect and explore nonlocal and substantial effects of edges on stationary nonlinear solutions. We show that fractal and continuum bands arise in a long lattice governed by a nonreciprocal discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that stationary solutions are localized at the edge in the continuum band. For matrix $A$, vector $\boldsymbol{b}$ and function $f$, the computation of vector $f(A)\boldsymbol{b}$ arises in many scientific computing applications. We consider the problem of obtaining quantum state $\lvert f \rangle$ corresponding to vector $f(A)\boldsymbol{b}$. There is a quantum algorithm to compute state $\lvert f \rangle$ using eigenvalue estimation that uses phase estimation and Hamiltonian simulation $\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{{\bf i}} A t}$. However, the algorithm based on eigenvalue estimation needs $\textrm{poly}(1/\epsilon)$ runtime, where $\epsilon$ is the desired accuracy of the output state. Moreover, if matrix $A$ is not Hermitian, $\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{{\bf i}} A t}$ is not unitary and we cannot run eigenvalue estimation. In this paper, we propose a quantum algorithm that uses Cauchy's integral formula and the trapezoidal rule as an approach that avoids eigenvalue estimation. We show that the runtime of the algorithm is $\mathrm{poly}(\log(1/\epsilon))$ and the algorithm outputs state $\lvert f \rangle$ even if $A$ is not Hermitian., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure

So far, topological band theory is discussed mainly for systems described by eigenvalue problems. Here, we develop a topological band theory described by a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP). Our analysis elucidates that non-Hermitian topological band structures may emerge for systems described by a GEVP with Hermitian matrices. The above result is verified by analyzing a two-dimensional toy model where symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs) emerge although the matrices involved are Hermitian. Remarkably, these SPERs are protected by emergent symmetry, which is unique to the systems described by the GEVP. Furthermore, these SPERs elucidate the origin of the characteristic dispersion of hyperbolic metamaterials which is observed in experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Disordered mechanical systems with high connectivity represent a limit opposite to the more familiar case of disordered crystals. Individual ions in a crystal are subjected essentially to nearest-neighbor interactions. In contrast, the systems studied in this paper have all their degrees of freedom coupled to each other. Thus, the problem of linearized small oscillations of such systems involves two full positive-definite and non-commuting matrices, as opposed to the sparse matrices associated with disordered crystals. Consequently, the familiar methods for determining the averaged vibrational spectra of disordered crystals, introduced many years ago by Dyson and Schmidt, are inapplicable for highly connected disordered systems. In this paper we apply random matrix theory to calculate the averaged vibrational spectra of such systems, in the limit of infinitely large system size. We calculate the average spectrum of the product of two positive definite random matrices by means of free probability theory techniques. We also show that this problem is intimately related with quasi-hermitian random matrix theory. The analytical results we obtain for the spectrum agree well with our numerical results. The latter also exhibit oscillations at the high-frequency band edge, which fit well the Airy kernel pattern. We also compute inverse participation ratios of the corresponding amplitude eigenvectors and demonstrate that they are all extended, in contrast with conventional disordered crystals. In addition to matrix model analysis, we study the vibrational spectra of various multi-segmented disordered pendula, as concrete realizations of highly connected mechanical systems. An important theorem in Gaussian quantum information tells us that we can diagonalise the covariance matrix of any Gaussian state via a symplectic transformation. Whilst the diagonal form is easy to find, the process for finding the diagonalising symplectic can be more difficult, and a common, existing method requires taking matrix powers, which can be demanding analytically. Inspired by a recently presented technique for finding the eigenvectors of a Hermitian matrix from certain submatrix eigenvalues, we derive a similar method for finding the diagonalising symplectic from certain submatrix determinants, which could prove useful in Gaussian quantum information., Comment: 10 pages, supplementary files available at https://github.com/softquanta/symplectic_decomposition

The J\'{a}nossy density for a determinantal point process is the probability density that an interval $I$ contains exactly $p$ points except for those at $k$ designated loci. The J\'{a}nossy density associated with an integrable kernel $\mathbf{K}\doteq (\varphi(x)\psi(y)-\psi(x)\varphi(y))/(x-y)$ is shown to be expressed as a Fredholm determinant $\mathrm{Det}(\mathbb{I}-\tilde{\mathbf{K}}|_I)$ of a transformed kernel $\tilde{\mathbf{K}}\doteq (\tilde{\varphi}(x)\tilde{\psi}(y)-\tilde{\psi}(x)\tilde{\varphi}(y))/(x-y)$. We observe that $\tilde{\mathbf{K}}$ satisfies Tracy and Widom's criteria if $\mathbf{K}$ does, because of the structure that the map $(\varphi, \psi)\mapsto (\tilde{\varphi}, \tilde{\psi})$ is a meromorphic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ gauge transformation between covariantly constant sections. This observation enables application of the Tracy--Widom method to J\'{a}nossy densities, expressed in terms of a solution to a system of differential equations in the endpoints of the interval. Our approach does not explicitly refer to isomonodromic systems associated with Painlev\'{e} equations employed in the preceding works. We present a new math-physics modeling approach, called canonical quantization with numerical mode-decomposition, for capturing the physics of how incoming photons interact with finite-sized dispersive media, which is not describable by the previous Fano-diagonalization methods. The main procedure is to (1) study a system where electromagnetic (EM) fields are coupled to non-uniformly distributed Lorentz oscillators in Hamiltonian mechanics, (2) derive a generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problem for conjugate pairs in coordinate space, (3) apply computational electromagnetics methods to find a countably/finite set of time-harmonic eigenmodes that diagonalizes the Hamiltonian, and (4) perform the subsequent canonical quantization with mode-decomposition. $W$-representation is a miraculous possibility to define a non-perturbative (exact) partition function as an exponential action of somehow integrated Ward identities on unity. It is well known for numerous eigenvalue matrix models when the relevant operators are of a kind of $W$-operators: for the Hermitian matrix model with the Virasoro constraints, it is a $W_3$-like operator, and so on. Delocalization transition is numerically found in a non-Hermitian extension of a discrete-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional random medium. At the transition, an eigenvector gets delocalized and at the same time the corresponding energy eigenvalue (the imaginary unit times the phase of the eigenvalue of the time-evolution operator) becomes complex. This is in accordance with a non-Hermitian extension of the random Anderson model in one dimension, called, the Hatano-Nelson model. Non-Hermitian skin effect, namely that the eigenvalues and eigenstates of a non-Hermitian tight-binding Hamiltonian have significant differences under open or periodic boundary conditions, is a remarkable phenomenon of non-Hermitian systems. Inspired by the presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect, we study the evolution of wave-packets in non-Hermitian systems, which can be determined using the single-particle Green's function. Surprisingly, we find that in the thermodynamical limit, the Green's function does not depend on boundary conditions, despite the presence of skin effect. We proffer a general proof for this statement in arbitrary dimension with finite hopping range, with an explicit illustration in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We study the probability that all the eigenvalues of $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices, from the Laguerre unitary ensemble with the weight $x^{\gamma}\mathrm{e}^{-4nx},\;x\in[0,\infty),\;\gamma>-1$, lie in the interval $[0,\alpha]$. By using previous results for finite $n$ obtained by the ladder operator approach of orthogonal polynomials, we derive the large $n$ asymptotics of the largest eigenvalue distribution function with $\alpha$ ranging from 0 to the soft edge. In addition, at the soft edge, we compute the constant conjectured by Tracy and Widom [Commun. Math. Phys. 159 (1994), 151-174], later proved by Deift, Its and Krasovsky [Commun. Math. In this paper, we show that every connected signed graph with smallest eigenvalue strictly greater than $-2$ and large enough minimum degree is switching equivalent to a complete graph. This is a signed analogue of a theorem of Hoffman. We consider the Bethe Salpeter approach to the BFKL evolution in order to naturally incorporate the property of the Hermitian Separability in the BFKL approach. We combine the resulting all order ansatz for the BFKL eigenvalue together with reflection identities for harmonic sums and derive the most complicated term of the next-to-next-to-leading order BFKL eigenvalue in SUSY N=4. An astroid-shaped loop of exceptional points (EPs), comprising four cusps, is found to spawn from the triple degeneracy point in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a Lieb lattice with nearest-neighbor hoppings when non-Hermiticity is introduced. The occurrence of the EP loop is due to the realness of the discriminant which is guaranteed by the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. The EPs at the four cusps involve the coalescence of three eigenstates, which is the combined result of the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry and mirror-T symmetry. The EP loop is exactly an astroid in the limit of an infinitesimal non-Hermiticity. The EP loop expands from the $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}M$ point with increasing non-Hermiticity and splits into two EP loops at a critical non-Hermiticity. The further increase of non-Hermiticity contracts the two EP loops towards and finally to two EPs at the $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}X$ and $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}Y$ points in the BZ, accompanied by the emergence of Dirac-like cones. The two EPs vanish at a larger non-Hermiticity. The EP loop disappears and several discrete EPs are found to survive when next-nearest hoppings are introduced to break the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. A topological invariant called the discriminant number is used to characterize their robustness against perturbations. Both discrete EPs and those on the EP loop(s) are found to show anisotropic asymptotic behaviors. Finally, the experimental realization of the Lieb lattice using a coupled waveguide array is discussed.

Eigenvalues of the Hermitian Wilson–Dirac operator are of special interest in several lattice QCD simulations, e.g., for noise reduction when evaluating all-to-all propagators. In this paper we present a Davidson-type eigensolver that utilizes the structural properties of the Hermitian Wilson–Dirac operator Q to compute eigenpairs of this operator corresponding to small eigenvalues. The main idea is to exploit a synergy between the (outer) eigensolver and its (inner) iterative scheme which solves shifted linear systems. This is achieved by adapting the multigrid DD- α AMG algorithm to a solver for shifted systems involving the Hermitian Wilson–Dirac operator. We demonstrate that updating the coarse grid operator using eigenvector information obtained in the generalized Davidson method is crucial to achieve good performance when calculating many eigenpairs, as our study of the local coherence shows. We compare our method with the commonly used software-packages PARPACK and PRIMME in numerical tests, where we are able to achieve significant improvements, with speed-ups of up to one order of magnitude and a near-linear scaling with respect to the number of eigenvalues. For illustration we compare the distribution of the small eigenvalues of Q on a 64 × 3 2 3 lattice with what is predicted by the Banks–Casher relation in the infinite volume limit.

We study the spectral rigidity of the non-Hermitian analog of the Anderson model suggested by Tzortzakakis, Makris and Economou (TME). This is a $L\times L \times L$ tightly bound cubic lattice, where both real and imaginary parts of on-site energies are independent random variables uniformly distributed between $-W/2$ and $W/2$. The TME model may be used to describe a random laser. In a recent paper we proved that this model has the Anderson transition at $W= W_c \simeq 6$ in three dimension. Here we numerically diagonalize TME $L \times L \times L$ cubic lattice matrices and calculate the number variance of eigenvalues in a disk of their complex plane. We show that on the metallic side $W < 6$ of the Anderson transition, complex eigenvalues repel each other as strongly as in the complex Ginibre ensemble only in a disk containing $N_c(L,W)$ eigenvalues. We find that $N_c(L,W)$ is proportional to $L$ and grows with decreasing $W$ similarly to the number of energy levels $N_c$ in the Thouless energy band of the Anderson model., 4 pages, 3 figures

Quantum phase estimation provides a path to quantum computation of solutions to Hermitian eigenvalue problems $Hv = \lambda v$, such as those occurring in quantum chemistry. It is natural to ask whether the same technique can be applied to generalized eigenvalue problems $Av = \lambda B v$, which arise in many areas of science and engineering. We answer this question affirmatively. A restricted class of generalized eigenvalue problems could be solved as efficiently as standard eigenvalue problems. A paradigmatic example is provided by Sturm--Liouville problems. Another example comes from linear ideal magnetohydrodynamics, where phase estimation could be used to determine the stability of magnetically confined plasmas in fusion reactors., Comment: 5 pages

In this manuscript, a generalized inverse eigenvalue problem is considered that involves a linear pencil $(z\mathcal{J}_{[0,n]}-\mathcal{H}_{[0,n]})$ of matrices arising in the theory of rational interpolation and biorthogonal rational functions. In addition to the reconstruction of the Hermitian matrix $\mathcal{H}_{[0,n]}$ with the entries $b_j's$, characterizations of the rational functions that are components of the prescribed eigenvectors are given. A condition concerning the positive-definiteness of $\mathcal{J}_{[0,n]}$ and which is often an assumption in the direct problem is also isolated. Let $A$ be a $n\times n$ complex Hermitian matrix and let $\lambda(A)=(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n)\in \mathbb{R}^n$ denote the eigenvalues of $A$, counting multiplicities and arranged in non-increasing order. Motivated by problems arising in the theory of low rank matrix approximation, we study the spectral spread of $A$, denoted $\text{Spr}^+(A)$, given by $\text{Spr}^+(A) =(\lambda_1-\lambda_{n}\, , \, \lambda_2-\lambda_{n-1},\ldots, \lambda_{k}-\lambda_{n-k+1})\in \mathbb{R}^k$, where $k=[n/2]$ (integer part). We propose two different strategies to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a given, not necessarily Hermitian, matrix (Formula presented.). Our methods apply also to the case of complex eigenvalues, making the strategies interesting for applications to physics and to pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics in particular. We first consider a dynamical approach, based on a pair of ordinary differential equations defined in terms of the matrix (Formula presented.) and of its adjoint (Formula presented.). Then, we consider an extension of the so-called power method, for which we prove a fixed point theorem for (Formula presented.) useful in the determination of the eigenvalues of (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.). The two strategies are applied to some explicit problems. In particular, we compute the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the matrix arising from a recently proposed quantum mechanical system, the truncated Swanson model, and we check some asymptotic features of the Hessenberg matrix.

Power system state estimation is heavily subjected to measurement error, which comes from the noise of measuring instruments, communication noise, and some unclear randomness. Traditional weighted least square (WLS), as the most universal state estimation method, attempts to minimize the residual between measurements and the estimation of measured variables, but it is unable to handle the measurement error. To solve this problem, based on random matrix theory, this paper proposes a data-driven approach to clean measurement error in matrix-level. Our method significantly reduces the negative effect of measurement error, and conducts a two-stage state estimation scheme combined with WLS. In this method, a Hermitian matrix is constructed to establish an invertible relationship between the eigenvalues of measurements and their covariance matrix. Random matrix tools, combined with an optimization scheme, are used to clean measurement error by shrinking the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix. With great robustness and generality, our approach is particularly suitable for large interconnected power grids. We investigate the finite dimensional dynamical system derived by Braden and Hone in 1996 from the solitons of $A_{n-1}$ affine Toda field theory. This system of evolution equations for an $n\times n$ Hermitian matrix $L$ and a real diagonal matrix $q$ with distinct eigenvalues was interpreted as a special case of the spin Ruijsenaars--Schneider models due to Krichever and Zabrodin. A decade later, L.-C. Li re-derived the model from a general framework built on coboundary dynamical Poisson groupoids. This led to a Hamiltonian description of the gauge invariant content of the model, where the gauge transformations act as conjugations of $L$ by diagonal unitary matrices. Here, we point out that the same dynamics can be interpreted also as a special case of the spin Sutherland systems obtained by reducing the free geodesic motion on symmetric spaces, studied by Pusztai and the author in 2006; the relevant symmetric space being $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})/ \mathrm{U}(n)$. This construction provides an alternative Hamiltonian interpretation of the Braden--Hone dynamics. In this paper, we study the properties of two-dimensional lattices in the presence of non-Hermitian disorder. In the context of coupled mode theory, we consider random gain-loss distributions on every waveguide channel (on site disorder). Our work provides a systematic study of the interplay between disorder and non-Hermiticity. In particular, we study the eigenspectrum in the complex frequency plane and we examine the localization properties of the eigenstates, either by the participation ratio or the level spacing, defined in the complex plane. A non-Hermitian coupled waveguide system with periodically varying parameters, in which the Berry curvature is analogous to a hyperbolic magnetic monopole or antimonopole, is investigated. It is shown to have a purely imaginary Berry connection, and is consequently influenced by a geometric multiplier. It is possible for this multiplier to induce net gain or loss in the system, corresponding to the existence of the antimonopole or monopole in parameter space, respectively. For the right choice of parameters, the system will display an apparent non-adiabatic change in behaviour, which implies a switch between the dominant eigenstate in the waveguides, leading to a change in parameter space analogous to a charge reversal of the hyperbolic magnetic monopole., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We discuss the decay rates of chaotic quantum systems coupled to noise. We model both the Hamiltonian and the system-noise coupling by random $N \times N$ Hermitian matrices, and study the spectral properties of the resulting Lindblad superoperator. We consider various random-matrix ensembles, and find that for all of them the asymptotic decay rate remains nonzero in the thermodynamic limit, i.e., the spectrum of the superoperator is gapped as $N \rightarrow \infty$. A sharp spectral transition takes place as the dissipation strength is increased: for weak dissipation, the non-zero eigenvalues of the master equation form a continuum; whereas for strong dissipation, the asymptotic decay rate is an \emph{isolated eigenvalue}, i.e., a `mid-gap state' that is sharply separated from the continuous spectrum of the master equation. For finite $N$, the probability of finding a very small gap vanishes algebraically with a scaling exponent that is extensive in system size, and depends only on the symmetry class of the random matrices and the number of independent decay channels. Products and sums of random matrices have seen a rapid development in the past decade due to various analytical techniques available. Two of these are the harmonic analysis approach and the concept of polynomial ensembles. Very recently, it has been shown for products of real matrices with anti-symmetric matrices of even dimension that the traditional harmonic analysis on matrix groups developed by Harish-Chandra et al. needs to be modified when considering the group action on general symmetric spaces of matrices. In the present work, we consider the product of complex random matrices with Hermitian matrices, in particular the former can be also rectangular while the latter has not to be positive definite and is considered as a fixed matrix as well as a random matrix. This generalises an approach for products involving the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) and circumvents the use there of non-compact group integrals. We consider words $G_{i_1} \cdots G_{i_m}$ involving i.i.d. complex Ginibre matrices, and study tracial expressions of their eigenvalues and singular values. We show that the limit distribution of the squared singular values of every word of length $m$ is a Fuss-Catalan distribution with parameter $m+1$. This generalizes previous results concerning powers of a complex Ginibre matrix, and products of independent Ginibre matrices. In addition, we find other combinatorial parameters of the word that determine the second-order limits of the spectral statistics. For instance, the so-called coperiod of a word characterizes the fluctuations of the eigenvalues. We extend these results to words of general non-Hermitian matrices with i.i.d. entries under moment-matching assumptions, band matrices, and sparse matrices. These results rely on the moments method and genus expansion, relating Gaussian matrix integrals to the counting of compact orientable surfaces of a given genus. We discuss the topology of Bogoliubov excitation bands from a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Since the Bogoliubov equation for a bosonic system is non-Hermitian, complex eigenvalues often appear and induce dynamical instability. As a function of momentum, the onset of appearance and disappearance of complex eigenvalues is an exceptional point (EP), which is a point where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable and hence the Berry connection and curvature are ill-defined, preventing defining topological invariants. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to remove EPs from the Brillouin zone by introducing an imaginary part of the momentum. We then define the Berry phase for a one-dimensional bosonic Bogoliubov system. Extending the argument for Hermitian systems, the Berry phase for an inversion-symmetric system is shown to be $Z_2$. As concrete examples, we numerically investigate two toy models and confirm the bulk-edge correspondence even in the presence of complex eigenvalues. Topological materials exhibit edge-localized scattering-free modes protected by their nontrivial bulk topology through the bulk-edge correspondence in Hermitian systems. While topological phenomena have recently been much investigated in non-Hermitian systems with dissipations and injections, the fundamental principle of their edge modes has not fully been established. Here, we reveal that, in non-Hermitian systems, robust gapless edge modes can ubiquitously appear owing to a mechanism that is distinct from bulk topology, thus indicating the breakdown of the bulk-edge correspondence. The robustness of these edge modes originates from yet another topological structure accompanying the branchpoint singularity around an exceptional point, at which eigenvectors coalesce and the Hamiltonian becomes nondiagonalizable. Their characteristic complex eigenenergy spectra are applicable to realize lasing wave packets that propagate along the edge of the sample. We numerically confirm the emergence and the robustness of the proposed edge modes in the prototypical lattice models. Furthermore, we show that these edge modes appear in a model of chiral active matter based on the hydrodynamic description, demonstrating that active matter can exhibit an inherently non-Hermitian topological feature. The proposed general mechanism would serve as an alternative designing principle to realize scattering-free edge current in non-Hermitian devices, going beyond the existing frameworks of non-Hermitian topological phases., Topological phenomena appear in non-Hermitian systems but the fundamental principles of the edge modes remain less understood. We study a quantum Ising chain with tailored bulk dissipation, which can be mapped onto a non-Hermitian Ashkin-Teller model. By exploiting the Kohmoto-den Nijs-Kadanoff transformation, we further map it to a staggered XXZ spin chain with pure-imaginary anisotropy parameters. This allows us to study the eigenstates of the original Liouvillian in great detail. We show that the steady state in each parity sector is a completely mixed state. The uniqueness of each is proved rigorously. We then study the decay modes on the self-dual line corresponding to the uniform XXZ chain and obtain an exact formula for the Liouvillian gap $ g $, the inverse relaxation time, in the thermodynamic limit. Over the last few years, parity-time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$) symmetry has been the focus of considerable attention. Ever since, pseudo-Hermitian notions have permeated a number of fields ranging from optics to atomic and topological physics, as well as optomechanics, to mention a few. Unlike their Hermitian counterparts, nonconservative systems do not exhibit a priori real eigenvalues and hence unitary evolution. However, once $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry is introduced, such dissipative systems can surprisingly display a real eigenspectrum, thus ensuring energy conservation during evolution. In optics, $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry can be readily established by incorporating, in a balanced way, regions having an equal amount of optical gain and loss. However, thus far, all optical realizations of such $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry have been restricted to a single transverse dimension (1D), such as arrays of optical waveguides or active coupled cavity arrangements. In most cases, only the loss function was modulated---a restrictive aspect that is only appropriate for linear systems. Here, we present an experimental platform for investigating the interplay between $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry and nonlinearity in two-dimensional (2D) environments, where nonlinear localization and soliton formation can be observed. In contrast to typical dissipative solitons, we demonstrate a one-parameter family of soliton solutions that are capable of displaying attributes similar to those encountered in nonlinear conservative arrangements. For high optical powers, this new family of $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ solitons tends to collapse on a discrete network---thus giving rise to an amplified, self-accelerating structure.

Contrary to the conventional wisdom in Hermitian systems, a continuous quantum phase transition between gapped phases is shown to occur without closing the energy gap $\Delta$ in non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems. Here, the relevant length scale $\xi \simeq v_{\rm LR}/\Delta$ diverges because of the breakdown of the Lieb-Robinson bound on the velocity (i.e., unboundedness of $v_{\rm LR}$) rather than vanishing of the energy gap $\Delta$. The susceptibility to a change in the system parameter exhibits a singularity due to nonorthogonality of eigenstates. Within the expanding field of non-Hermitian physics, non-Hermitian pumping has emerged as a key phenomenon, epitomized through the skin effect via extensive boundary mode accumulation modifying the conventional Bloch picture. Beyond redefining bulk-boundary correspondences, we show that non-Hermitian pumping induces an unprecedented type of spectral topology: it admits a classification in terms of graph topology, which is distinct from conventional topological classifications of the eigenstate or energy Riemann surface. Each topological class is characterized by a conformally invariant configuration of spectral branching singularities, with gap-preserving transitions giving rise to emergent band geometry and Berry curvature discontinuities physically manifested as anomalous response kinks. By placing all Hermitian and non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians on equal footing, our comprehensive framework also enables the first analytic construction of topological phase diagrams in the presence of multiple non-reciprocal coupling scales, as prototypically demonstrated for the extended non-Hermitian Chern and Kitaev models. Based on general algebraic geometry properties of the energy dispersion, our framework can be directly generalized to multiple bands, dimensions, and even interacting systems. We present a characterization of eigenvalue inequalities between two Hermitian matrices by means of inertia indices. As applications, we deal with some classical eigenvalue inequalities for Hermitian matrices, including the Cauchy interlacing theorem and the Weyl inequality, in a simple and unified approach. We also give a common generalization of eigenvalue inequalities for (Hermitian) normalized Laplacian matrices of simple (signed, weighted, directed) graphs. Genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases can be realized in open systems with sufficiently strong gain and loss; in such phases, the Hamiltonian cannot be deformed into a gapped Hermitian Hamiltonian without energy bands touching each other. In this paper, we prove the edge universality of largest eigenvalues for separable covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q :=A^{1/2}XBX^*A^{1/2}$. Here $X=(x_{ij})$ is an $n\times N$ random matrix with $x_{ij}=N^{-1/2}q_{ij}$, where $q_{ij}$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with zero mean and unit variance, and $A$ and $B$ are respectively $n \times n$ and $N\times N$ deterministic non-negative definite symmetric (or Hermitian) matrices. We consider the high-dimensional case, i.e. ${n}/{N}\to d \in (0, \infty)$ as $N\to \infty$. Assuming $\mathbb E q_{ij}^3=0$ and some mild conditions on $A$ and $B$, we prove that the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal Q$ coincide with that of the corresponding Gaussian ensemble (i.e. the $\mathcal Q$ with $X$ being an $i.i.d.$ Gaussian matrix) as long as we have $\lim_{s \rightarrow \infty}s^4 \mathbb{P}(\vert q_{ij} \vert \geq s)=0$, which is a sharp moment condition for edge universality. Fermionic systems differ from bosonic ones in several ways, in particular that the time-reversal operator $T$ is odd, $T^2=-1$. For $PT$-symmetric bosonic systems, the no-signaling principle and the quantum brachistochrone problem have been studied to some degree, both of them controversially. In this paper, we apply the basic methods proposed for bosonic systems to {\it fermionic} two- and four-dimensional $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians, and obtain several surprising results: We find - in contrast to the bosonic case - that the no-signaling principle is upheld for two-dimensional fermionic Hamiltonians, however, the $PT$ symmetry is broken. In addition, we find that the time required for the evolution from a given initial state, the spin-up, to a given final state, the spin-down, is a constant, independent of the parameters of the Hamiltonian, under the eigenvalue constraint. That is, it cannot - as in the bosonic case - be optimized. We do, however, also find a dimensional dependence: four-dimensional $PT$-symmetric fermionic Hamiltonians considered here again uphold the no-signaling principle, but it is not essential that the $PT$ symmetry be broken. The symmetry is, however, broken if the measure of entanglement is conserved. In the four-dimensional systems, the evolution time between orthogonal states is dependent on the parameters of the Hamiltonian, with the conclusion that it again can be optimized, and approach zero under certain circumstances. However, if we require the conservation of entanglement, the transformation time between these two states becomes the same constant as found in the two-dimensional case, which coincides with the minimum time for such a transformation to take place in the Hermitian case., Comment: 8 pages, no figures

Circulant preconditioners for function of matrices have been recently of interest. In particular, several authors proposed the use of the optimal circulant preconditioners as well as the superoptimal circulant preconditioners in this context and numerically illustrated that such preconditioners are effective for certain functions of Toeplitz matrices. Motivated by their results, we propose in this work the absolute value superoptimal circulant preconditioners and provide several theorems that analytically show the effectiveness of such circulant preconditioners for systems defined by functions of Toeplitz matrices. Namely, we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are clustered around ± 1 and rapid convergence of Krylov subspace methods can therefore be expected. Moreover, we show that our results can be extended to functions of block Toeplitz matrices with Toeplitz blocks provided that the optimal block circulant matrices with circulant blocks are used as preconditioners. Numerical examples are given to support our theoretical results.

The Bernard-LeClair (BL) symmetry classes generalize the ten-fold way classes in the absence of Hermiticity. Within the BL scheme, time-reversal and particle-hole come in two flavors, and "pseudo-Hermiticity" generalizes Hermiticity. We propose that these symmetries are relevant for the topological classification of non-Hermitian single-particle Hamiltonians and Hermitian bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) models. We show that the spectrum of any Hermitian bosonic BdG Hamiltonian is found by solving for the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix which belongs to one of the BL classes. We therefore suggest that bosonic BdG Hamiltonians inherit the topological properties of a non-Hermitian symmetry class and explore the consequences by studying symmetry-protected edge instabilities in a simple 1D system., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We construct a new family of strong linearizations of rational matrices considering the polynomial part of them expressed in a basis that satisfies a three term recurrence relation. For this purpose, we combine the theory developed by Amparan et al., MIMS EPrint 2016.51, and the new linearizations of polynomial matrices introduced by Fa{\ss}bender and Saltenberger, Linear Algebra Appl., 525 (2017). In addition, we present a detailed study of how to recover eigenvectors of a rational matrix from those of its linearizations in this family. We complete the paper by discussing how to extend the results when the polynomial part is expressed in other bases, and by presenting strong linearizations that preserve the structure of symmetric or Hermitian rational matrices. We study the effects of the position of the passive and active cavities on the spontaneous parity-time- ($\mathcal{PT}$-) symmetry-breaking behavior in a non-Hermitian coupled-cavity-array model. We analyze and discuss the energy eigenvalue spectra and $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in the topologically trivial and nontrivial regimes under three different cases in detail; that is, the passive and active cavities are located at, respectively, the two end positions, the second and penultimate positions, and each position in the coupled-cavity array. The odevity of the number of cavities is further considered to check the effects of the non-Hermitian terms applied on the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and -asymmetric systems. We find that the position of the passive and active cavities has remarkable impacts on the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking behavior, and in each case the system exhibits distinguishable and novel spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking characteristics. The effects of the non-Hermitian terms on the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and -asymmetric systems due to the odevity are comparatively different in the first case but qualitatively the same in the second case.

We consider a general class of symmetric or Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})_{x,y \in \llbracket 1,N\rrbracket^d}$ in any dimension $d\ge 1$, where the entries are independent, centered random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ vanishes if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$, and we are interested in the mesoscopic scale with $1\ll W\ll N$. Define the {\it{generalized resolvent}} of $H$ as $G(H,Z):=(H - Z)^{-1}$, where $Z$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix with entries $Z_{xx}\in \mathbb C_+$ for all $x$. Then we establish a precise high-probability bound on certain averages of polynomials of the resolvent entries. As an application of this fluctuation averaging result, we give a self-contained proof for the delocalization of random band matrices in dimensions $d\ge 2$. More precisely, for any fixed $d\ge 2$, we prove that the bulk eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized in certain averaged sense if $N\le W^{1+\frac{d}{2}}$. This improves the corresponding results in \cite{HeMa2018} under the assumption $N\ll W^{1+\frac{d}{d+1}}$, and in \cite{ErdKno2013,ErdKno2011} under the assumption $N\ll W^{1+\frac{d}{6}}$. We study the Landau--Streater quantum channel $\Phi: \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}_d) \mapsto \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}_d)$, whose Kraus operators are proportional to the irreducible unitary representation of $SU(2)$ generators of dimension $d$. We establish $SU(2)$ covariance for all $d$ and $U(3)$ covariance for $d=3$. Using the theory of angular momentum, we explicitly find the spectrum and the minimal output entropy of $\Phi$. Negative eigenvalues in the spectrum of $\Phi$ indicate that the channel cannot be obtained as a result of Hermitian Markovian quantum dynamics. Degradability and antidegradability of the Landau--Streater channel is fully analyzed. We calculate classical and entanglement-assisted capacities of $\Phi$. Quantum capacity of $\Phi$ vanishes if $d=2,3$ and is strictly positive if $d \geqslant 4$. We show that the channel $\Phi \otimes \Phi$ does not annihilate entanglement and preserves entanglement of some states with Schmidt rank $2$ if $d \geqslant 3$., Comment: 20 pages
