Let G be a finite graph with the non-k-order property (essentially, a uniform finite bound on the size of an induced sub-half-graph). A major result of the paper applies model-theoretic arguments to obtain a stronger version of Szemer\'edi's regularity lemma for such graphs, Theorem 5.18, in which there are no irregular pairs, the bounds are significantly improved, and each component satisfies an indivisibility condition. Motivation for this work comes from a coincidence of model-theoretic and graph-theoretic ideas. Namely, it was known that the "irregular pairs" in the statement of Szemer\'edi's regularity lemma cannot be eliminated, due to the counterexample of half-graphs. The results of this paper show in what sense this counterexample is the only essential difficulty. The proof is largely model-theoretic (though written to be accessible to finite combinatorialists): arbitrarily large half-graphs coincide with model-theoretic instability, so in their absence, structure theorems and technology from stability theory apply. In addition to the theorem quoted, we give several other regularity lemmas with different advantages, in which the indivisibility condition on the components is improved (at the expense of letting the number of components grow with |G|) and extend some of these results to the larger class of graphs without the independence property., Comment: 30 pages

Two years ago, Conlon and Gowers, and Schacht proved general theorems that allow one to transfer a large class of extremal combinatorial results from the deterministic to the probabilistic setting. Even though the two papers solve the same set of long-standing open problems in probabilistic combinatorics, the methods used in them vary significantly and therefore yield results that are not comparable in certain aspects. The theorem of Schacht can be applied in a more general setting and yields stronger probability estimates, whereas the one of Conlon and Gowers also implies random versions of some structural statements such as the famous stability theorem of Erdos and Simonovits. In this paper, we bridge the gap between these two transference theorems. Building on the approach of Schacht, we prove a general theorem that allows one to transfer deterministic stability results to the probabilistic setting that is somewhat more general and stronger than the one obtained by Conlon and Gowers. We then use this theorem to derive several new results, among them a random version of the Erdos-Simonovits stability theorem for arbitrary graphs. The construction of optimal line packings in real or complex Euclidean spaces has shown to be a tantalizingly difficult task, because it includes the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines. In the regime where equiangular lines are not possible, some optimal packings are known, for example, those achieving the orthoplex bound related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. In this paper, we investigate the packing of subspaces instead of lines and determine the implications of maximality in this context. We leverage the existence of real or complex maximal mutually unbiased bases with a combinatorial design strategy in order to find optimal subspace packings that achieve the orthoplex bound. We also show that maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases convert between coordinate projections associated with certain balanced incomplete block designs and Grassmannian 2-designs. Examples of maximal orthoplectic fusion frames already appeared in the works by Shor, Sloane and by Zauner. In this paper the problem of finding various spanning structures in random hypergraphs is studied. We notice that a general result of Riordan [Spanning subgraphs of random graphs, Combinatorics, Probability & Computing 9 (2000), no. 2, 125-148] can be adapted from random graphs to random $r$-uniform hypergaphs and provide sufficient conditions when a random $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ contains a given spanning structure a.a.s. We also discuss several spanning structures such as cube-hypergraphs, lattices, spheres and Hamilton cycles in hypergraphs. Moreover, we study universality, i.e. when does an $r$-uniform hypergraph contain any hypergraph on $n$ vertices and with maximum vertex degree bounded by $\Delta$? For $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ it is shown that this holds for $p= \omega \left((\ln n/n)^{1/\Delta}\right)$ a.a.s. by combining approaches taken by Dellamonica, Kohayakawa, R\"odl and Ruci\'nski [An improved upper bound on the density of universal random graphs, Random Structures Algorithms 46 (2015), no. 2, 274-299] and of Ferber, Nenadov and Peter [Universality of random graphs and rainbow embedding, Random Structures Algorithms, to appear]. In this paper, we study quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) integration in weighted Sobolev spaces. In contrast to many previous results the QMC algorithms considered here are of open type, i.e., they are extensible in the number of sample points without having to discard the samples already used. As the underlying integration nodes we consider randomized Halton sequences in prime bases $\boldsymbol{p}=(p_1,...,p_s)$ for which we study the root mean square (RMS) worst-case error. The randomization method is a $\boldsymbol{p}$-adic shift which is based on $\boldsymbol{p}$-adic arithmetic. The obtained error bounds are optimal in the order of magnitude of the number of sample nodes. Furthermore we obtain conditions on the coordinate weights under which the error bounds are independent of the dimension $s$. In terms of the field of Information-Based Complexity this means that the corresponding QMC rule achieves a strong polynomial tractability error bound. Our findings on the RMS worst-case error of randomized Halton sequences can be carried over to the RMS $L_2$-discrepancy. Except for the $\boldsymbol{p}$-adic shift our results are fully constructive and no search algorithms (such as the component-by-component algorithm) are required.

In this paper, we study cut sets of attractors of iteration function systems (IFS) in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under natural conditions, we show that all irreducible cut sets of these attractors are perfect sets or single points. This leads to a criterion for the existence of cut points of IFS attractors. If the IFS attractors are self-affine tiles, our results become algorithmically checkable and can be used to exhibit cut points with the help of Hata graphs. This enables us to construct cut points of some self-affine tiles studied in the literature., Comment: 13 pages

In this paper we show how to use simple partitioning lemmas in order to embed spanning graphs in a typical member of $G(n,p)$. Chung and Graham began the systematic study of k-uniform hypergraph quasirandom properties soon after the foundational results of Thomason and Chung-Graham-Wilson on quasirandom graphs. One feature that became apparent in the early work on k-uniform hypergraph quasirandomness is that properties that are equivalent for graphs are not equivalent for hypergraphs, and thus hypergraphs enjoy a variety of inequivalent quasirandom properties. In the past two decades, there has been an intensive study of these disparate notions of quasirandomness for hypergraphs, and an open problem that has emerged is to determine the relationship between them. Our main result is to determine the poset of implications between these quasirandom properties. A classical theorem of Dirac from 1952 asserts that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ is Hamiltonian. In this paper we extend this result to random graphs. Motivated by the study of resilience of random graph properties we prove that if $p \gg \log n /n$, then a.a.s. every subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(1/2+o(1))np$ is Hamiltonian. Our result improves on previously known bounds, and answers an open problem of Sudakov and Vu. In this paper, we prove a quantitative version of the statement that every nonempty finite subset of $\mathbb{N}^+$ is a set of quadratic residues for infinitely many primes of the form $[n^c]$ with $1\leqslant c\leqslant243/205$. In the recent years, the trace norm of graphs has been extensively studied under the name of graph energy. In this paper some of this research is extended to more general matrix norms, like the Schatten p-norms and the Ky Fan k-norms. Quasi-random graphs can be informally described as graphs whose edge distribution closely resembles that of a truly random graph of the same edge density. Recently, Shapira and Yuster proved the following result on quasi-randomness of graphs. Let $k \ge 2$ be a fixed integer, $\alpha_1,...,\alpha_k$ be positive reals satisfying $\sum_{i} \alpha_i = 1$ and $(\alpha_1,..., \alpha_k) \neq (1/k,...,1/k)$, and $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. If for every partition of the vertices of $G$ into sets $V_1,..., V_k$ of size $\alpha_1 n,..., \alpha_k n$, the number of complete graphs on $k$ vertices which have exactly one vertex in each of these sets is similar to what we would expect in a random graph, then the graph is quasi-random. However, the method of quasi-random hypergraphs they used did not provide enough information to resolve the case $(1/k,..., 1/k)$ for graphs. In their work, Shapira and Yuster asked whether this case also forces the graph to be quasi-random. In this paper, we use multivariate splines to investigate the volume of polytopes. We first present an explicit formula for the multivariate truncated power, which can be considered as a dual version of the famous Brion’s formula for the volume of polytopes. We also prove that the integration of polynomials over polytopes can be dealt with by using the multivariate truncated power. Moreover, we show that the volume of cube slicing can be considered as the maximum value of the box spline. On the basis of this connection, we give a simple proof for Good’s conjecture, which has been settled before by probability methods.

The paper deals with a particular type of a projective ring plane defined over the ring of double numbers over Galois fields, R\_{\otimes}(q) \equiv GF(q) \otimes GF(q) \cong GF(q)[x]/(x(x-1)). The plane is endowed with (q^2 + q + 1)^2 points/lines and there are (q + 1)^2 points/lines incident with any line/point. As R\_{\otimes}(q) features two maximal ideals, the neighbour relation is not an equivalence relation, i. e. the sets of neighbour points to two distant points overlap. Given a point of the plane, there are 2q(q+1) neighbour points to it. These form two disjoint, equally-populated families under the reduction modulo either of the ideals. The points of the first family merge with (the image of) the point in question, while the points of the other family go in a one-to-one fashion to the remaining q(q + 1) points of the associated ordinary (Galois) projective plane of order q. The families swap their roles when switching from one ideal to the other, which can be regarded as a remarkable, finite algebraic geometrical manifestation/representation of the principle of complementarity. The bijection between composition structures and random closed subsets of the unit interval implies that the composition structures associated with $S \cap [0,1]$ for a self-similar random set $S\subset {\mathbb R}_+$ are those which are consistent with respect to a simple truncation operation. Using the standard coding of compositions by finite strings of binary digits starting with a 1, the random composition of $n$ is defined by the first $n$ terms of a random binary sequence of infinite length. The locations of 1s in the sequence are the places visited by an increasing time-homogeneous Markov chain on the positive integers if and only if $S = \exp(-W)$ for some stationary regenerative random subset $W$ of the real line. This paper addresses two problems lying at the intersection of geometric analysis and theoretical computer science: The non-linear isomorphic Dvoretzky theorem and the design of good approximate distance oracles for large distortion. We introduce the notion of Ramsey partitions of a finite metric space, and show that the existence of good Ramsey partitions implies a solution to the metric Ramsey problem for large distortion (a.k.a. the non-linear version of the isomorphic Dvoretzky theorem, as introduced by Bourgain, Figiel, and Milman). We then proceed to construct optimal Ramsey partitions, and use them to show that for every e\in (0,1), any n-point metric space has a subset of size n^{1-e} which embeds into Hilbert space with distortion O(1/e). This result is best possible and improves part of the metric Ramsey theorem of Bartal, Linial, Mendel and Naor, in addition to considerably simplifying its proof. We use our new Ramsey partitions to design the best known approximate distance oracles when the distortion is large, closing a gap left open by Thorup and Zwick. Namely, we show that for any $n$ point metric space X, and k>1, there exists an O(k)-approximate distance oracle whose storage requirement is O(n^{1+1/k}), and whose query time is a universal constant. A graph has the unique path property UPP_n if there is a unique path of length n between any ordered pair of nodes. This paper reiterates Royle and MacKay's technique for constructing orderly algorithms. We wish to use this technique to enumerate all UPP_2 graphs of small orders 9 and 16. We attempt to use the direct graph formalism and find that the algorithm is inefficient. We introduce a generalised problem and derive algebraic and combinatoric structures with appropriate structure. We are able to then design an orderly algorithm to determine all UPP_2 graphs of order 9, which runs fast enough. We hope to be able to determine the UPP_2 graphs of order 16 in the near future., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we address the following three fundamental problems : To determine (1) the dimension of $W(\underline{b};\underline{a})$ (resp. $W_s(\underline{b};\underline{a})$) in terms of $a_j$ and $b_i$, (2) whether the closure of $W(\underline{b};\underline{a})$ is an irreducible component of $\Hi ^p(\PP^{n+c})$, and (3) when $\Hi ^p(\PP^{n+c})$ is generically smooth along $W(\underline{b};\underline{a})$. Concerning question (1) we give an upper bound for the dimension of $W(\underline{b};\underline{a})$ (resp. $W_s(\underline{b};\underline{a})$) which works for all integers $a_0,a_1,...,a_{t+c-2}$ and $b_1,...,b_t$, and we conjecture that this bound is sharp. The conjecture is proved for $2\le c\le 5$, and for $c\ge 6$ under some restriction on $a_0,a_1,...,a_{t+c-2}$ and $b_1,...,b_t$. This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, by considering a reformulation of a deep theorem of G\"ollnitz, we obtain a new weighted partition identity involving the Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, namely, partitions into parts differing by at least two. Consequences of this include Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity for theta functions, Sylvester's famous refinement of Euler's theorem, as well as certain weighted partition identities. Next, by studying partitions with prescribed bounds on successive ranks and replacing these with weighted Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, we obtain two new sets of theorems - a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 6), and a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 7), $i=1,2,3$., Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures

A spectral set in R^n is a set X of finite Lebesgue measure such that L^2(X) has an orthogonal basis of exponentials. It is conjectured that every spectral set tiles R^n by translations. A set of translations T has a universal spectrum if every set that that tiles by translations by T has this spectrum. A recent result proved that many periodic tiling sets have universal spectra, using results from factorizations of abelian groups, for groups for which a strong form of a conjecture of Tijdeman is valid. This paper shows Tijdeman's conjecture does not hold for the cyclic group of order 900. It formulates a new sufficient conjecture for a periodic tiling set to have a universal spectrum, and uses it to show that the tiling sets for the counterexample above do have universal spectra., Comment: 9 pages, latex, to appear J. This paper considers the problem of characterizing the simplest discrete point sets that are aperiodic, using invariants based on topological dynamics. A Delone set whose patch-counting function N(T), for radius T, is finite for all T is called repetitive if there is a function M(T) such that every ball of radius M(T)+T contains a copy of each kind of patch of radius T that occurs in the set. This is equivalent to the minimality of an associated topological dynamical system with R^n-action. There is a lower bound for M(T) in terms of N(T), namely N(T) = O(M(T)^n), but no general upper bound. The complexity of a repetitive Delone set can be measured by the growth rate of its repetitivity function M(T). For example, M(T) is bounded if and only if the set is a crystal. A set is called is linearly repetitive if M(T) = O(T) and densely repetitive if M(T) = O(N(T))^{1/n}). We show that linearly repetitive sets and densely repetitive sets have strict uniform patch frequencies, i.e. the associated topological dynamical system is strictly ergodic. It follows that such sets are diffractive. In the reverse direction, we construct a repetitive Delone set in R^n which has M(T) = O(T(log T)^{2/n}(log log log T)^{4/n}), but does not have uniform patch frequencies. The automorphism tower of a group is obtained by computing its automorphism group, the automorphism group of THAT group, and so on, iterating transfinitely. Each group maps canonically into the next using inner automorphisms, and so at limit stages one can take a direct limit and continue the iteration. The tower is said to terminate if a fixed point is reached, that is, if a group is reached which is isomorphic to its automorphism group by the natural map. This occurs if a complete group is reached, one which is centerless and has only inner automorphisms. Wielandt [1939] proved the classical result that the automorphism tower of any centerless finite group terminates in finitely many steps. Rae and Roseblade [1970] proved that the automorphism tower of any centerless Cernikov group terminates in finitely many steps. Hulse [1970] proved that the the automorphism tower of any centerless polycyclic group terminates in countably many steps. Simon Thomas [1985] proved that the automorphism tower of any centerless group eventually terminates.
