One of the simplest examples of a robust heteroclinic cycle involves three saddle equilibria: each one is unstable to the next in turn, and connections from one to the next occur within invariant subspaces. Such a situation can be described by a third-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), and typical trajectories approach each equilibrium point in turn, spending progressively longer to cycle around the three points but never stopping. This cycle has been invoked as a model of cyclic competition between populations adopting three strategies, characterised as Rock, Paper and Scissors. When spatial distribution and mobility of the populations is taken into account, waves of Rock can invade regions of Scissors, only to be invaded by Paper in turn. The dynamics is described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) that has travelling wave (in one dimension) and spiral (in two dimensions) solutions. In this paper, we explore how the robust heteroclinic cycle in the ODE manifests itself in the PDEs. Taking the wavespeed as a parameter, and moving into a travelling frame, the PDEs reduce to a sixth-order set of ODEs, in which travelling waves are created in a Hopf bifurcation and are destroyed in three different heteroclinic bifurcations, depending on parameters, as the travelling wave approaches the heteroclinic cycle. We explore the three different heteroclinic bifurcations, none of which have been observed in the context of robust heteroclinic cycles previously. We investigate the techniques and ideas used in the convergence analysis of two proximal ADMM algorithms for solving convex optimization problems involving compositions with linear operators. Besides this, we formulate a variant of the ADMM algorithm that is able to handle convex optimization problems involving an additional smooth function in its objective, and which is evaluated through its gradient. Moreover, in each iteration we allow the use of variable metrics, while the investigations are carried out in the setting of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We consider 2- or 3-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations defined on a bounded domain $\Omega$, with no-slip boundary conditions and subject to an external force, assumed to cause instability. We then seek to uniformly stabilize such N-S system, in the vicinity of an unstable equilibrium solution, in critical $L^q$-based Sobolev and Besov spaces, by finite dimensional feedback controls. These spaces are `close' to $L^3(\Omega)$ for $d=3$. This functional setting is significant. In fact, in the case of the uncontrolled N-S dynamics, extensive research efforts have recently lead to the space $L^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ as being a critical space for the issue of well-posedness in the full space. Thus, our present work manages to solve the stated uniform stabilization problem for the controlled N-S dynamics in a correspondingly related function space setting. In this paper, the feedback controls are localized on an arbitrarily small open interior subdomain $\omega$ of $\Omega$. In addition to providing a solution of the uniform stabilization problem in such critical function space setting, this paper manages also to much improve and simplify, at both the conceptual and computational level, the solution given in the more restrictive Hilbert space setting in the literature. Moreover, such treatment sets the foundation for the authors' final goal in a subsequent paper. This paper aims to develop a system-theoretic approach to ordinary differential equations which deterministically describe dynamics of prevalence of epidemics. The equations are treated as interconnections in which component systems are connected by signals. The notions of integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-to-state stability (ISS) have been effective in addressing nonlinearities globally without domain restrictions in analysis and design of control systems. They provide useful tools of module-based methods integrating characteristics of component systems. This paper expresses fundamental properties of models of infectious diseases and vaccination through the language of iISS and ISS of components and whole systems. The systematic treatment is expected to facilitate development of effective schemes of controlling the disease spread via non-conventional Lyapunov functions.

Combining the theory of fractional calculus and evolution families, the fixed point theorem with respect to convex-power condensing operator and a new estimation technique of the measure of noncompactness, we obtained the existence of mild solutions under the situation that the nonlinear function satisfy some appropriate local growth condition and a noncompactness measure condition. Our results generalize and improve some previous results on this topic, since the condition of uniformly continuity of the nonlinearity is not required, and also the strong restriction on the constants in the condition of noncompactness measure is completely deleted. As samples of applications, we consider the initial value problem to a class of time fractional non-autonomous partial differential equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition at the end of this paper.

The steepest descent method for multiobjective optimization on Riemannian manifolds with lower bounded sectional curvature is analyzed in this paper. The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, an asymptotic analysis of the method is presented with three different finite procedures for determining the stepsize, namely, Lipschitz stepsize, adaptive stepsize and Armijo-type stepsize. The second aim is to present, by assuming that the Jacobian of the objective function is componentwise Lipschitz continuous, iteration-complexity bounds for the method with these three stepsizes strategies. In addition, some examples are presented to emphasize the importance of working in this new context. Support vector machine is an important and fundamental technique in machine learning. In this paper, we apply a semismooth Newton method to solve two typical SVM models: the L2-loss SVC model and the $$\epsilon $$ -L2-loss SVR model. The semismooth Newton method is widely used in optimization community. A common belief on the semismooth Newton method is its fast convergence rate as well as high computational complexity. Our contribution in this paper is that by exploring the sparse structure of the models, we significantly reduce the computational complexity, meanwhile keeping the quadratic convergence rate. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate the outstanding performance of the semismooth Newton method, especially for problems with huge size of sample data (for news20.binary problem with 19,996 features and 1,355,191 samples, it only takes 3 s). In particular, for the $$\epsilon $$ -L2-loss SVR model, the semismooth Newton method significantly outperforms the leading solvers including DCD and TRON.

In a 2006 paper, Damg{\aa}rd and Frandsen designed a faster version of the Quadratic Frobenius Test. This test assumes the Extended Riemann Hypothesis in order to find small nonresidues, which allow construction of quadratic extensions with faster arithmetic. Variational inference has become one of the most widely used methods in latent variable modeling. In its basic form, variational inference employs a fully factorized variational distribution and minimizes its KL divergence to the posterior. As the minimization can only be carried out approximately, this approximation induces a bias. In this paper, we revisit perturbation theory as a powerful way of improving the variational approximation. Perturbation theory relies on a form of Taylor expansion of the log marginal likelihood, vaguely in terms of the log ratio of the true posterior and its variational approximation. While first order terms give the classical variational bound, higher-order terms yield corrections that tighten it. However, traditional perturbation theory does not provide a lower bound, making it inapt for stochastic optimization. In this paper, we present a similar yet alternative way of deriving corrections to the ELBO that resemble perturbation theory, but that result in a valid bound. We show in experiments on Gaussian Processes and Variational Autoencoders that the new bounds are more mass covering, and that the resulting posterior covariances are closer to the true posterior and lead to higher likelihoods on held-out data., Comment: To appear in Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment (JSTAT), 2019

In this paper on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension, we give a complete picture of stability for all solutions to the Riemann problem which contain only extremal shocks. We study stability of the Riemann problem amongst a large class of solutions. We show stability among the family of solutions with shocks from any family. We assume solutions verify at least one entropy condition. We have no small data assumptions. The solutions we consider are bounded and satisfy a strong trace condition weaker than $BV_{\text{loc}}$. We make only mild assumptions on the system. In particular, our work applies to gas dynamics, including the isentropic Euler system and the full Euler system for a polytropic gas. We use the theory of a-contraction (see Kang and Vasseur [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 222(1):343--391, 2016]), and introduce new ideas in this direction to allow for two shocks from different shock families to be controlled simultaneously. This paper shows $L^2$ stability for the Riemann problem for all time. Our results compare to Chen, Frid, and Li [Comm. Math. Phys., 228(2):201--217, 2002] and Chen and Li [J. Differential Equations, 202(2):332--353, 2004], which give uniqueness and long-time stability for perturbations of the Riemann problem -- amongst a large class of solutions without smallness assumptions and which are locally $BV$. Motivated by robotic surveillance applications, this paper studies the novel problem of maximizing the return time entropy of a Markov chain, subject to a graph topology with travel times and stationary distribution. The return time entropy is the weighted average, over all graph nodes, of the entropy of the first return times of the Markov chain; this objective function is a function series that does not admit in general a closed form. The paper features theoretical and computational contributions. First, we obtain a discrete-time delayed linear system for the return time probability distribution and establish its convergence properties. We show that the objective function is continuous over a compact set and therefore admits a global maximum; a unique globally-optimal solution is known only for complete graphs with unitary travel times. We then establish upper and lower bounds between the return time entropy and the well-known entropy rate of the Markov chain. To compute the optimal Markov chain numerically, we establish the asymptotic equality between entropy, conditional entropy and truncated entropy, and propose an iteration to compute the gradient of the truncated entropy. Finally, we apply these results to the robotic surveillance problem. Our numerical results show that, for a model of rational intruder over prototypical graph topologies and test cases, the maximum return time entropy chain performs better than several existing Markov chains.

This paper is concerned with the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which is an extension of the pioneer paper (Y. Guo et al., 2017, Ann. PDE) from a domain of $[0,L]\times\mathbb{R}_+$ to $[0,L]\times[0,2]$. This paper studies a discrete model of a large dam where the difference between lower and upper levels, $L$, is assumed to be large. Passage across the levels leads to damage, and the damage costs of crossing the lower or upper level are proportional to the large parameter $L$. Input stream of water is described by compound Poisson process, and the water cost depends upon current level of water in the dam. The aim of the paper is to choose the parameters of output stream (specifically defined in the paper) minimizing the long-run expenses that include the damage costs and water costs. The present paper addresses the important question \emph{How does the structure of water costs affect the optimal solution?} We prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution. A special attention is attracted to the case of linear structure of the costs. As well, the paper contributes to the theory of state-dependent queueing systems. The inter-relations between important characteristics of a state-dependent queueing system are established, and their asymptotic analysis that involves analytic techniques of Tauberian theory and heavy traffic approximations is provided., Comment: 65 pages of 12pt font, 5 figures and 1 table. We consider parametric estimation of the continuous part of a class of ergodic diffusions with jumps based on high-frequency samples. Various papers previously proposed threshold based methods, which enable us to distinguish whether observed increments have jumps or not at each small-time interval, hence to estimate the unknown parameters separately. However, a data-adapted and quantitative choice of the threshold parameter is known to be a subtle and sensitive problem. In this paper, we present a simple alternative based on the Jarque–Bera normality test for the Euler residuals. Different from the threshold based method, the proposed method does not require any sensitive fine tuning, hence is of practical value. It is shown that under suitable conditions the proposed estimator is asymptotically equivalent to an estimator constructed by the unobserved fluctuation of the continuous part of the solution process, hence is asymptotically efficient. Some numerical experiments are conducted to observe finite-sample performance of the proposed method.

In this paper we present a numerical comparison of various mass-conservative discretizations for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We have three main objectives. First, we want to clarify how purely mass-conservative methods perform compared to methods that are additionally energy-conservative or symplectic. Second, we shall compare the accuracy of energy-conservative and symplectic methods among each other. Third, we will investigate if a linearized energy-conserving method suffers from a loss of accuracy compared to an approach which requires to solve a full nonlinear problem in each time-step. In order to obtain a representative comparison, our numerical experiments cover different physically relevant test cases, such as traveling solitons, stationary multi-solitons, Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice and vortex pattern in a rapidly rotating superfluid. We shall also consider a computationally severe test case involving a pseudo Mott insulator. Our space discretization is based on finite elements throughout the paper. We will also give special attention to long time behavior and possible coupling conditions between time-step sizes and mesh sizes. The main observation of this paper is that mass conservation alone will not lead to a competitive method in complex settings. Furthermore, energy-conserving and symplectic methods are both reliable and accurate, yet, the energy-conservative schemes achieve a visibly higher accuracy in our test cases. Finally, the scheme that performs best throughout our experiments is an energy-conserving relaxation scheme with linear time-stepping proposed by C. Besse (SINUM, 42(3):934–952, 2004).

The problem of two fixed centers was introduced by Euler as early as in 1760. It plays an important role both in celestial mechanics and in the microscopic world. In the present paper we study the spatial problem in the case of arbitrary (both positive and negative) strengths of the centers. Combining techniques from scattering theory and Liouville integrability, we show that this spatial problem has topologically non-trivial scattering dynamics, which we identify as scattering monodromy. The approach that we introduce in this paper applies more generally to scattering systems that are integrable in the Liouville sense.

This paper reports some novel and intriguing discoveries about the localization and geometrization phenomenon in plasmon resonances and the intrinsic geometric structures of Neumann-Poincar\'e eigenfunctions. It is known that plasmon resonance generically occurs in the quasi-static regime where the size of the plasmonic inclusion is sufficiently small compared to the wavelength. In this paper, we show that the global smallness condition on the plasmonic inclusion can be replaced by a local high-curvature condition, and the plasmon resonance occurs locally near the high-curvature point of the plasmonic inclusion. We provide partial theoretical explanation and link with the geometric structures of the Neumann- Poincar\'e (NP) eigenfunctions. The spectrum of the Neumann-Poincar\'e operator has received significant attentions in the literature. We show for the first time some intrinsic geometric structures of the Neumann-Poincar\'e eigenfunctions near high-curvature points., Comment: comments are welcome

In this paper, we first prove that the existence of a solution of SDEs under the assumptions that the drift coefficient is of linear growth and path--dependent, and diffusion coefficient is bounded, uniformly elliptic and H\"older continuous. We apply Gaussian upper bound for a probability density function of a solution of SDE without drift coefficient and local Novikov condition, in order to use Maruyama--Girsanov transformation. The aim of this paper is to prove the existence with explicit representations (under linear/super--linear growth condition), Gaussian two--sided bound and H\"older continuity (under sub--linear growth condition) of a probability density function of a solution of SDEs with path--dependent drift coefficient. In the paper, we construct conservative Markov processes corresponding to the martingale solutions to the stochastic heat equation on R + \mathbb {R}^+ or R \mathbb {R} with values in a general Riemannian manifold, which is only assumed to be complete and stochastic complete. This work is an extension of the previous paper of Röckner and the second, third, and fourth authors [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 52 (2020), pp. 2237–2274] on finite volume case. Moveover, we also obtain some functional inequalities associated to these Markov processes. This implies that on infinite volume case, the exponential ergodicity of the solution of the Ricci curvature is strictly positive and the non-ergodicity of the process if the sectional curvature is negative.

In this paper, we study the $H^s$-stability of the log-log blowup regime (which has been completely described in a series of recent works by Merle and Raphael) for the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations $i\partial_tu+\Delta u+|u|^\frac4du=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq3$. We aim to extend the result in [Colliander and Raphael, Rough blowup solutions to the $L^2$ critical NLS, Math. Anna., 345(2009), 307-366.] for dimension two to the higher dimensions cases $d\geq3$, where we use the bootstrap argument in the above paper and the commutator estimates in [M. Visan and X. Adaptive regularization with cubics (ARC) is an algorithm for unconstrained, non-convex optimization. Akin to the popular trust-region method, its iterations can be thought of as approximate, safe-guarded Newton steps. For cost functions with Lipschitz continuous Hessian, ARC has optimal iteration complexity, in the sense that it produces an iterate with gradient smaller than $\varepsilon$ in $O(1/\varepsilon^{1.5})$ iterations. For the same price, it can also guarantee a Hessian with smallest eigenvalue larger than $-\varepsilon^{1/2}$. In this paper, we study a generalization of ARC to optimization on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we generalize the iteration complexity results to this richer framework. Our central contribution lies in the identification of appropriate manifold-specific assumptions that allow us to secure these complexity guarantees both when using the exponential map and when using a general retraction. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to studying these assumptions---relevant beyond ARC---and providing user-friendly sufficient conditions for them. We consider a class of double phase variational integrals driven by nonhomogeneous potentials. We study the associated Euler equation and we highlight the existence of two different Rayleigh quotients. One of them is in relationship with the existence of an infinite interval of eigenvalues while the second one is associated with the nonexistence of eigenvalues. The notion of eigenvalue is understood in the sense of pairs of nonlinear operators, as introduced by Fučík, Nečas, Souček, and Souček. The analysis developed in this paper extends the abstract framework corresponding to some standard cases associated to the ▫$p(x)$▫-Laplace operator, the generalized mean curvature operator, or the capillarity differential operator with variable exponent. The results contained in this paper complement the pioneering contributions of Marcellini, Mingione et al. in the field of variational integrals with unbalanced growth. Proučujemo prirejeno Eulerjevo enačbo in izpostavimo obstoj dveh različnih Rayleighovih kvocientov. Eden izmed njih je v zvezi z obstojem neskončnega intervala lastnih vrednosti, medtem ko je drugi povezan z neobstojem lastnih vrednosti. Pojem lastne vrednosti razumemo v smislu parov nelinearnih operatorjev, kar so vpeljali Fučík, Nečas, Souček in Souček. V tem članku razširimo abstraktni okvir, ki ustreza nekaterim standardnim primerom povezanim s ▫$p(x)$▫-Laplaceovim operatorjem, posplošenim operatorjem povprečne ukrivljenosti ali pa diferencialnemu operatorju kapilarnosti z variabilnim eksponentom. Naši rezultati dopolnjujejo pionirske prispevke Marcellinija, Mingioneja in drugih na področju variacijskih integralov z neuravnovešeno rastjo.

This paper studies an acceleration technique for incremental aggregated gradient ({\sf IAG}) method through the use of \emph{curvature} information for solving strongly convex finite sum optimization problems. These optimization problems of interest arise in large-scale learning applications. Our technique utilizes a curvature-aided gradient tracking step to produce accurate gradient estimates incrementally using Hessian information. We propose and analyze two methods utilizing the new technique, the curvature-aided IAG ({\sf CIAG}) method and the accelerated CIAG ({\sf A-CIAG}) method, which are analogous to gradient method and Nesterov's accelerated gradient method, respectively. Setting $\kappa$ to be the condition number of the objective function, we prove the $R$ linear convergence rates of $1 - \frac{4c_0 \kappa}{(\kappa+1)^2}$ for the {\sf CIAG} method, and $1 - \sqrt{\frac{c_1}{2\kappa}}$ for the {\sf A-CIAG} method, where $c_0,c_1 \leq 1$ are constants inversely proportional to the distance between the initial point and the optimal solution. When the initial iterate is close to the optimal solution, the $R$ linear convergence rates match with the gradient and accelerated gradient method, albeit {\sf CIAG} and {\sf A-CIAG} operate in an incremental setting with strictly lower computation complexity. The paper introduces a new finite element numerical method for the solution of partial differential equations on evolving domains. The approach uses a completely Eulerian description of the domain motion. The physical domain is embedded in a triangulated computational domain and can overlap the time-independent background mesh in an arbitrary way. The numerical method is based on finite difference discretizations of time derivatives and a standard geometrically unfitted finite element method with an additional stabilization term in the spatial domain. The performance and analysis of the method rely on the fundamental extension result in Sobolev spaces for functions defined on bounded domains. This paper includes a complete stability and error analysis, which accounts for discretization errors resulting from finite difference and finite element approximations as well as for geometric errors coming from a possible approximate recovery of the physical domain. We study the probabilistic behaviour of the continued fraction expansion of a quadratic irrational number, when weighted by some "additive" cost. We prove asymptotic Gaussian limit laws, with an optimal speed of convergence. We deal with the underlying dynamical system associated with the Gauss map, and its weighted periodic trajectories. We work with analytic combinatorics methods, and mainly with bivariate Dirichlet generating functions; we use various tools, from number theory (the Landau Theorem), from probability (the Quasi-Powers Theorem), or from dynamical systems: our main object of study is the (weighted) transfer operator, that we relate with the generating functions of interest. The present paper exhibits a strong parallelism with the methods which have been previously introduced by Baladi and Vall\'ee in the study of rational trajectories. In this paper boundary regularity for p-harmonic functions is studied with respect to the Mazurkiewicz boundary and other compactifications. In particular, the Kellogg property (which says that the set of irregular boundary points has capacity zero) is obtained for a large class of compactifications, but also two examples when it fails are given. This study is done for complete metric spaces equipped with doubling measures supporting a p-Poincar\'e inequality, but the results are new also in unweighted Euclidean spaces., Comment: Third version: with a correction at the end (last two pages), filling in a gap in the argument. This paper is concerned with the convergence and the error analysis for the feedback particle filter (FPF) algorithm. The FPF is a controlled interacting particle system where the control law is designed to solve the nonlinear filtering problem. For the linear Gaussian case, certain simplifications arise whereby the linear FPF reduces to one form of the ensemble Kalman filter. For this and for the more general nonlinear non-Gaussian case, it has been an open problem to relate the convergence and error properties of the finite- $N$ algorithm to the mean-field limit (where the exactness results have been obtained). In this paper, the equations for empirical mean and covariance are derived for the finite- $N$ linear FPF. Remarkably, for a certain deterministic form of FPF, the equations for mean and variance are identical to the Kalman filter. This allows strong conclusions on convergence and error properties based on the classical filter stability theory for the Kalman filter. It is shown that the error converges to zero even with finite number of particles. The paper also presents propagation of chaos estimates for the finite- $N$ linear filter. The error estimates are illustrated with numerical experiments.

This paper is concerned with spherical harmonics, and two refinements thereof: complex harmonics and symplectic harmonics. The reproducing kernels of the spherical and complex harmonics are explicitly given in terms of Gegenbauer or Jacobi polynomials. In the first part of the paper we determine the reproducing kernel for the space of symplectic harmonics, which is again expressible as a Jacobi polynomial of a suitable argument. In the second part we find plane wave formulas for the reproducing kernels of the three types of harmonics, expressing them as suitable integrals over Stiefel manifolds. This is achieved using Pizzetti formulas that express the integrals in terms of differential operators.

A standard problem in uncertainty quantification and in computational statistics is the sampling of stationary Gaussian random fields with given covariance in a $d$-dimensional (physical) domain. In many applications it is sufficient to perform the sampling on a regular grid on a cube enclosing the physical domain, in which case the corresponding covariance matrix is nested block Toeplitz. After extension to a nested block circulant matrix, this can be diagonalised by FFT -- the ``circulant embedding method''. Provided the circulant matrix is positive definite, this provides a finite expansion of the field in terms of a deterministic basis, with coefficients given by i.i.d. standard normals. In this paper we prove, under mild conditions, that the positive definiteness of the circulant matrix is always guaranteed, provided the enclosing cube is sufficiently large. We examine in detail the case of the Mat\'{e}rn covariance, and prove (for fixed correlation length) that, as $h_0\rightarrow 0$, positive definiteness is guaranteed when the random field is sampled on a cube of size order $(1 + \nu^{1/2} \log h_0^{-1})$ times larger than the size of the physical domain. (Here $h_0$ is the mesh spacing of the regular grid and $\nu$ the Mat\'{e}rn smoothness parameter.) We show that the sampling cube can become smaller as the correlation length decreases when $h_0$ and $\nu$ are fixed. Our results are confirmed by numerical experiments. We prove several results about the decay of the eigenvalues of the circulant matrix. These lead to the conjecture, verified by numerical experiment, that they decay with the same rate as the Karhunen--Lo\`{e}ve eigenvalues of the covariance operator. In this paper we study the bounded perturbation resilience of the extragradient and the subgradient extragradient methods for solving variational inequality (VI) problem in real Hilbert spaces. This is an important property of algorithms which guarantees the convergence of the scheme under summable errors, meaning that an inexact version of the methods can also be considered. Moreover, once an algorithm is proved to be bounded perturbation resilience, superiorizion can be used, and this allows flexibility in choosing the bounded perturbations in order to obtain a superior solution, as well explained in the paper. We also discuss some inertial extragradient methods. Under mild and standard assumptions of monotonicity and Lipschitz continuity of the VI's associated mapping, convergence of the perturbed extragradient and subgradient extragradient methods is proved. In addition we show that the perturbed algorithms converges at the rate of $O(1/t)$. In this paper we provide the existence of classical solutions to stationary mean field game systems in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, with coercive potential and aggregating local coupling, under general conditions on the Hamiltonian. The only structural assumption we make is on the growth at infinity of the coupling term in terms of the growth of the Hamiltonian. This result is obtained using a variational approach based on the analysis of the non-convex energy associated to the system. Finally, we show that in the vanishing viscosity limit mass concentrates around the flattest minima of the potential. We also describe the asymptotic shape of the rescaled solutions in the vanishing viscosity limit, in particular proving the existence of ground states, i.e. classical solutions to mean field game systems in the whole space without potential, and with aggregating coupling., Comment: 44 pages. Generalizations of the Hermite polynomials to many variables and/or to the complex domain have been located in mathematical and physical literature for some decades. Polynomials traditionally called complex Hermite ones are mostly understood as polynomials in z and z ‾ which in fact makes them polynomials in two real variables with complex coefficients. The present paper proposes to investigate for the first time holomorphic Hermite polynomials in two variables. Their algebraic and analytic properties are developed here. While the algebraic properties do not differ too much for those considered so far, their analytic features are based on a kind of non-rotational orthogonality invented by van Eijndhoven and Meyers. Inspired by their invention we merely follow the idea of Bargmann's seminal paper (1961) giving explicit construction of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces based on those polynomials. “Homotopic” behaviour of our new formation culminates in comparing it to the very classical Bargmann space of two variables on one edge and the aforementioned Hermite polynomials in z and z ‾ on the other. Unlike in the case of Bargmann's basis our Hermite polynomials are not product ones but factorize to it when bonded together with the first case of limit properties leading both to the Bargmann basis and suitable form of the reproducing kernel. Also in the second limit we recover standard results obeyed by Hermite polynomials in z and z ‾ .

International audience; This paper focuses on Sequential Monte Carlo approximations of smoothing distributions in conditionally linear and Gaussian state spaces. To reduce Monte Carlo variance of smoothers, it is typical in these models to use Rao-Blackwellization: particle approximation is used to sample sequences of hidden regimes while the Gaussian states are explicitly integrated conditional on the sequence of regimes and observations, using variants of the Kalman filter / smoother. The first successful attempt to use Rao-Blackwellization for smoothing extends the Bryson-Frazier smoother for Gaussian linear state space models using the generalized two-filter formula together with Kalman filters / smoothers. More recently, a forward backward decomposition of smoothing distributions mimicking the Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother for the regimes combined with backward Kalman updates has been introduced. This paper investigates the benefit of introducing additional rejuvenation steps in all these algorithms to sample at each time instant new regimes conditional on the forward and backward particles. This defines particle based approximations of the smoothing distributions whose support is not restricted to the set of particles sampled in the forward or backward filter. These procedures are applied to commodity markets which are described using a two factor model based on the spot price and a convenience yield for crude oil data.

It is an important problem in differential geometry to find non-naturally reductive homogeneous Einstein metrics on homogeneous manifolds. In this paper, we consider this problem for some coset spaces of compact simple Lie groups. A new method to construct invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics on normal homogeneous Einstein manifolds is presented. In particular, we show that on the standard homogeneous Einstein manifolds, except for some special cases, there exist plenty of such metrics. A further interesting result of this paper is that on some compact semisimple Lie groups, there exist a large number of left invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics which are not product metrics., Comment: 29 pages

This paper is a continuation of the author’s preceding one. In the preceding paper the author has rigorously constructed the Feynman path integral for the Dirac equation in the form of the sum-over-histories, satisfying the superposition principle, over all paths of one electron in space-time that goes in any direction at any speed, forward and backward in time with a finite number of turns. In the present paper, first we will generalize the results in the preceding paper and secondly prove in a direct way that our Feynman path integral satisfies the unitarity principle and the causality one.

We propose in this paper a unifying scheme for several algorithms from the literature dedicated to the solving of monotone inclusion problems involving compositions with linear continuous operators in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We show that a number of primal-dual algorithms for monotone inclusions and also the classical ADMM numerical scheme for convex optimization problems, along with some of its variants, can be embedded in this unifying scheme. While in the first part of the paper, convergence results for the iterates are reported, the second part is devoted to the derivation of convergence rates obtained by combining variable metric techniques with strategies based on suitable choice of dynamical step sizes. The numerical performances, which can be obtained for different dynamical step size strategies, are compared in the context of solving an image denoising problem.

The paper concerns a particular example of the Gibbs sampler and its mixing efficiency. Coordinates of a point are rerandomized in the unit square [ 0 , 1 ] 2 to approach a stationary distribution with density proportional to exp ( − A 2 ( u − v ) 2 ) for ( u , v ) ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] 2 with some large parameter A . Diaconis conjectured the mixing time of this process to be O ( A 2 ) which we confirm in this paper. This improves on the currently known O ( exp ( A 2 ) ) estimate.

We obtain the optimal proxy variance for the sub-Gaussianity of Beta distribution, thus proving upper bounds recently conjectured by Elder (2016). We provide different proof techniques for the symmetrical (around its mean) case and the non-symmetrical case. The technique in the latter case relies on studying the ordinary differential equation satisfied by the Beta moment-generating function known as the confluent hypergeometric function. As a consequence, we derive the optimal proxy variance for the Dirichlet distribution, which is apparently a novel result. We also provide a new proof of the optimal proxy variance for the Bernoulli distribution, and discuss in this context the proxy variance relation to log-Sobolev inequalities and transport inequalities., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

This paper describes the analysis of Lagrange interpolation errors on tetrahedrons. In many textbooks, the error analysis of Lagrange interpolation is conducted under geometric assumptions such as shape regularity or the (generalized) maximum angle condition. In this paper, we present a new estimation in which the error is bounded in terms of the diameter and projected circumradius of the tetrahedron. Because we do not impose any geometric restrictions on the tetrahedron itself, our error estimation may be applied to any tetrahedralizations of domains including very thin tetrahedrons., Comment: To appear in Journal of Approximation Theory

The question of the global regularity vs finite time blow up in solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equation is a major open problem of modern applied analysis. In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional models of the axisymmetric hyperbolic boundary blow up scenario for the 3D Euler equation proposed by Hou and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations. These models generalize the 1D Hou-Luo model suggested in Hou & Luo's paper, for which finite time blow up has been established in the paper by Kyudong Choi, Thomas Y. Hou, Alexander Kiselev, Guo Luo, Vladimir Sverak, Yao Yao. The main new aspects of this work are twofold. First, we establish finite time blow up for a model that is a closer approximation of the three dimensional case than the original Hou-Luo model, in the sense that it contains relevant lower order terms in the Biot-Savart law that have been discarded in the paper by Hou & Luo's and the paper by Choi et al.. Secondly, we show that the blow up mechanism is quite robust, by considering a broader family of models with the same main term as in the Hou-Luo model. Such blow up stability result may be useful in further work on understanding the 3D hyperbolic blow up scenario., 22 pages, 1 figure

We study the Dirichlet problem for the semilinear equations involving the pseudo-relativistic operator on a bounded domain, (\sqrt{-\Delta + m^2} - m)u =|u|^{p-1}u \quad \textrm{in}~\Omega, with the Dirichlet boundary condition $u=0$ on $\partial \Omega$. Here, $p \in (1,\infty)$ and the operator $(\sqrt{-\Delta + m^2} - m)$ is defined in terms of spectral decomposition. In this paper, we investigate existence and nonexistence of a nontrivial solution, depending on the choice of $p$, $m$ and $\Omega$. Precisely, we show that $(i)$ if $p$ is not $H^1$ subcritical ($p \geq \frac{n+2}{n-2}$) and $\Omega$ is star-shaped, the equation has no nontrivial solution for all $m > 0$; $(ii)$ if $p$ is not $H^{1/2}$ supercritical ($1 0$ and any bounded domain $\Omega$; $(iii)$ finally, in the intermediate range ($\frac{n+1}{n-1}, Comment: 24 pages. In this paper we present a new approach to prove Schauder estimates at the boundary for sub-Laplacian type operators in Carnot groups. While internal Schauder estimates have been deeply studied, up to now subriemannian estimates at the boundary are known only in the Heisenberg groups. The proof of these estimates in the Heisenberg setting, due to Jerison (J Funct Anal 43:97–142, 1981), is based on the Fourier transform technique and cannot be repeated in general Lie groups. After the result of Jerison no new contribution to the boundary problem has been provided. In this paper we introduce a new method, which allows to build a Poisson kernel starting from the fundamental solution, from which we deduce the Schauder estimates at non characteristic boundary points.

In this paper we consider a new kind of inequality related to fractional integration, motivated by Gressman's paper. Based on it we investigate its multilinear analogue inequalities. Combining with the Gressman's work on multilinear integral, we establish this new kind of geometric inequalities with bilinear form and multilinear form in more general settings. Moreover, in some cases we also find the best constants and optimisers for these geometric inequalities on Euclidean spaces with Lebesgue measure settings with $L^p$ bounds.

This paper is concerned with the stability of transition waves and strictly positive entire solutions of random and nonlocal dispersal evolution equations of Fisher-KPP type with general time and space dependence, including time and space periodic or almost periodic dependence as special cases. We first show the existence, uniqueness, and stability of strictly positive entire solutions of such equations. Next, we show the stability of uniformly continuous transition waves connecting the unique strictly positive entire solution and the trivial solution zero and satisfying certain decay property at the end close to the trivial solution zero (if it exists). This paper is concerned with a distributed optimal control problem for a nonlocal phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type, which is a nonlocal version of a model for two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice under the presence of diffusion. The local model has been investigated in a series of papers by P. Podio-Guidugli and the present authors; the nonlocal model studied here consists of a highly nonlinear parabolic equation coupled to an ordinary differential inclusion of subdifferential type. The inclusion originates from a free energy containing the indicator function of the interval in which the order parameter of the phase segregation attains its values. It also contains a nonlocal term modeling long-range interactions. Due to the strong nonlinear couplings between the state variables (which even involve products with time derivatives), the analysis of the state system is difficult. In addition, the presence of the differential inclusion is the reason that standard arguments of optimal control theory cannot be applied to guarantee the existence of Lagrange multipliers. In this paper, we examine an input-constrained erasure channel and we characterize the asymptotics of its capacity when the erasure rate is low. More specifically, for a general memoryless erasure channel with its input supported on an irreducible finite-type constraint, we derive partial asymptotics of its capacity, using some series expansion type formulas of its mutual information rate; and for a binary erasure channel with its first-order Markovian input supported on the $(1, \infty)$-RLL constraint, based on the concavity of its mutual information rate with respect to some parameterization of the input, we numerically evaluate its first-order Markov capacity and further derive its full asymptotics. The asymptotics obtained in this paper, when compared with the recently derived feedback capacity for a binary erasure channel with the same input constraint, enable us to draw the conclusion that feedback may increase the capacity of an input-constrained channel, even if the channel is memoryless., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theory

This paper is concerned with the scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves, due to the presence of scatterers and of inhomogeneities in the medium. We prove a sharp stability result for the solutions to the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, with respect to variations of the scatterer and of the inhomogeneity, under minimal regularity assumptions for both of them. The stability result leads to uniform bounds on solutions to the scattering problems for an extremely general class of admissible scatterers and inhomogeneities. The uniform bounds are a key step to tackle the challenging stability issue for the corresponding inverse electromagnetic scattering problem. In this paper we establish two optimal stability results of logarithmic type for the determination of polyhedral scatterers by a minimal number of electromagnetic scattering measurements. In order to prove the stability result for the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, we study two fundamental issues in the theory of Maxwell equations: Mosco convergence for H(curl) spaces and higher integrability properties of solutions to Maxwell equations in nonsmooth domains., Comment: 48 pages. This paper addresses the question of when projections of a high-dimensional random vector are approximately Gaussian. This problem has been studied previously in the context of high-dimensional data analysis, where the focus is on low-dimensional projections of high-dimensional point clouds. The focus of this paper is on the typical behavior when the projections are generated by an i.i.d. Gaussian projection matrix. The main results are bounds on the deviation between the conditional distribution of the projections and a Gaussian approximation, where the conditioning is on the projection matrix. The bounds are given in terms of the quadratic Wasserstein distance and relative entropy and are stated explicitly as a function of the number of projections and certain key properties of the random vector. The proof uses Talagrand's transportation inequality and a general integral-moment inequality for mutual information. Applications to random linear estimation and compressed sensing are discussed.

In the present paper we study a stochastic evolution equation for shell (SABRA \& GOY) models with pure jump \levy noise $L=\sum_{k=1}^\infty l_k(t)e_k$ on a Hilbert space $\h$. Here $\{l_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a family of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) real-valued pure jump \levy processes and $\{e_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is an orthonormal basis of $\h$. We mainly prove that the stochastic system has a unique invariant measure. For this aim we show that if the \levy measure of each component $l_k(t)$ of $L$ satisfies a certain order and a non-{degeneracy} condition and is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure, then the Markov semigroup associated {with} the unique solution of the system has the strong Feller property. If, furthermore, each $l_k(t)$ satisfies a small deviation property, then 0 is accessible for the dynamics independently of the initial condition.
