In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. International audience; We present a new notion of solution for mean field games master equations. This notion allows us to work with solutions which are merely continuous. We prove first results of uniqueness and stability for such solutions. It turns out that this notion is helpful to characterize the value function of mean field games of optimal stopping or impulse control and this is the topic of the second half of this paper. The notion of solution we introduce is only useful in the monotone case. We focus in this paper in the finite state space case.

This paper is concerned with well-posedness of the Cahn-Hilliard equation subject to a class of new dynamic boundary conditions. The system was recently derived in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019), 167-247) via an energetic variational approach and it naturally fulfills three physical constraints such as mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. The target problem examined in this paper can be viewed as a transmission problem that consists of Cahn-Hilliard type equations both in the bulk and on the boundary. In our approach, we are able to deal with a general class of potentials with double-well structure, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential and the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of global weak solutions are established. The proof is based on a novel time-discretization scheme for the approximation of the continuous problem. Besides, a regularity result is shown with the aim of obtaining a strong solution to the system.

This paper deals with dynamical optimal transport metrics defined by spatial discretisation of the Benamou--Benamou formula for the Kantorovich metric $W_2$. Such metrics appear naturally in discretisations of $W_2$-gradient flow formulations for dissipative PDE. However, it has recently been shown that these metrics do not in general converge to $W_2$, unless strong geometric constraints are imposed on the discrete mesh. In this paper we prove that, in a $1$-dimensional periodic setting, discrete transport metrics converge to a limiting transport metric with a non-trivial effective mobility. This mobility depends sensitively on the geometry of the mesh and on the non-local mobility at the discrete level. In his recent Proceedings of the AMS paper, “Gossez’s skew linear map and its pathological maximally monotone multifunctions”, Stephen Simons proved that the closure of the range of the sum of the Gossez operator and a multiple of the duality map is not convex whenever the scalar is between 0 0 and 4 4 . The problem of the convexity of that range when the scalar is equal to 4 4 was explicitly stated. In this paper, we answer this question in the negative for any scalar greater than or equal to 4 4 . We derive this result from an abstract framework that allows us to also obtain a corresponding result for the Fitzpatrick-Phelps integral operator.

This paper investigates the existence of weak solutions of biquasilinear boundary value problem for a coupled elliptic-parabolic system of divergence form with discontinuous leading coefficients. The mathematical framework addressed in the article considers the presence of an additional nonlinearity in the model which reflects the radiative thermal boundary effects in some applications of interest. The results are obtained via the Rothe-Galerkin method. Only weak assumptions are made on the data and the boundary conditions are allowed to be on a general form. The major contribution of the current paper is the explicit expressions for the constants appeared in the quantitative estimates that are derived. These detailed and explicit estimates may be useful for the study on nonlinear problems that appear in the real world applications. In particular, they clarify the smallness conditions. In conclusion, we illustrate how the above results may be applied to the thermoelectrochemical phenomena in an electrolysis cell. In this Paper we study a Bloch-Torrey regularization of the Rosensweig system for ferrofluids. The scope of this paper is twofold. First of all, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of solutions \`a la Leray of this model in the whole bidimensional space. Interesting enough, the well-posedness relies on a variation of the Aubin-Lions lemma for fractional time derivatives. In the second part of this paper we investigate both the long- time behavior of weak solutions and the propagation of Sobolev regularities in dimension two

This paper is concerned with spherical harmonics, and two refinements thereof: complex harmonics and symplectic harmonics. The reproducing kernels of the spherical and complex harmonics are explicitly given in terms of Gegenbauer or Jacobi polynomials. In the first part of the paper we determine the reproducing kernel for the space of symplectic harmonics, which is again expressible as a Jacobi polynomial of a suitable argument. In the second part we find plane wave formulas for the reproducing kernels of the three types of harmonics, expressing them as suitable integrals over Stiefel manifolds. This is achieved using Pizzetti formulas that express the integrals in terms of differential operators.

The goal of this paper is to investigate the stability of the Helmholtz equation in the high- frequency regime with non-smooth and rapidly oscillating coefficients on bounded domains. Existence and uniqueness of the problem can be proved using the unique continuation principle in Fredholm's alternative. However, this approach does not give directly a coefficient-explicit energy estimate. We present a new theoretical approach for the one-dimensional problem and find that for a new class of coefficients, including coefficients with an arbitrary number of discontinuities, the stability constant (i.e., the norm of the solution operator) is bounded by a term independent of the number of jumps. We emphasize that no periodicity of the coefficients is required. By selecting the wave speed function in a certain \resonant" way, we construct a class of oscillatory configurations, such that the stability constant grows exponentially in the frequency. This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem to 2D micropolar equations without angular viscosity in a smooth bounded domain. It is shown that such a system admits a unique and global weak solution. Classical mechanical systems are modeled by a symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$, and their symmetries, encoded in the action of a Lie group $G$ on $M$ by diffeomorphisms that preserves $\omega$. These actions, which are called "symplectic", have been studied in the past forty years, following the works of Atiyah, Delzant, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Heckman, Kostant, Souriau, and Sternberg in the 1970s and 1980s on symplectic actions of compact abelian Lie groups that are, in addition, of "Hamiltonian" type, i.e. they also satisfy Hamilton's equations. Since then a number of connections with combinatorics, finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems, more general symplectic actions, and topology, have flourished. In this paper we review classical and recent results on Hamiltonian and non Hamiltonian symplectic group actions roughly starting from the results of these authors. The aim of this paper is to derive and analyze a variational model for the joint estimation of motion and reconstruction of image sequences, which is based on a time-continuous Eulerian motion model. The model can be set up in terms of the continuity equation or the brightness constancy equation. The analysis in this paper focuses on the latter for robust motion estimation on sequences of twodimensional images. We rigorously prove the existence of a minimizer in a suitable function space setting. Moreover, we discuss the numerical solution of the model based on primal-dual algorithms and investigate several examples. This paper surveys recent results on classifying partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. This includes the construction of branching foliations and leaf conjugacies on three-dimensional manifolds with solvable fundamental group. Classification results in higher-dimensional settings are also discussed. In this paper, we show super-linear propagation in a nonlocal reaction-diffusion-mutation equation modeling the invasion of cane toads in Australia that has attracted attention recently from the mathematical point of view. The population of toads is structured by a phenotypical trait that governs the spatial diffusion. In this paper, we are concerned with the case when the diffusivity can take unbounded values, and we prove that the population spreads as $t^{3/2}$. We also get the sharp rate of spreading in a related local model.

This paper studies the Hardy-type inequalities on the discrete intervals. The first result is the variational formulas of the optimal constants. Using these formulas, one may obtain an approximating procedure and the known basic estimates of the optimal constants. The second result, which is the main innovation of this paper, is about the factor of basic upper estimates. An improved factor is presented, which is smaller than the known one and is best possible. This paper deals with the numerical integration of well-posed multiscale systems of ODEs or evolutionary PDEs. As these systems appear naturally in engineering problems, time-subcycling techniques are widely used every day to improve computational efficiency. These methods rely on a decomposition of the vector field in a fast part and a slow part and take advantage of that decomposition. This way, if an unconditionnally stable (semi-)implicit scheme cannot be easily implemented, one can integrate the fast equations with a much smaller time step than that of the slow equations, instead of having to integrate the whole system with a very small time-step to ensure stability. Then, one can build a numerical integrator using a standard composition method, such as a Lie or a Strang formula for example. Such methods are primarily designed to be convergent in short-time to the solution of the original problems. However, their longtime behavior rises interesting questions, the answers to which are not very well known. In particular, when the solutions of the problems converge in time to an asymptotic equilibrium state, the question of the asymptotic accuracy of the numerical longtime limit of the schemes as well as that of the rate of convergence is certainly of interest. In this context, the asymptotic error is defined as the difference between the exact and numerical asymptotic states. The goal of this paper is to apply that kind of numerical methods based on splitting schemes with subcycling to some simple examples of evolutionary ODEs and PDEs that have attractive equilibrium states, to address the aforementioned questions of asymptotic accuracy, to perform a rigorous analysis, and to compare them with their counterparts without subcycling. Our analysis is developed on simple linear ODE and PDE toy-models and is illustrated with several numerical experiments on these toy-models as well as on more complex systems. This paper is devoted to the analysis of qualitative properties of flux-saturated type operators in dimension one. Specifically, we study regularity properties and smoothing effects, discontinuous interfaces, the existence of traveling wave profiles, sub- and super-solutions and waiting time features. The aim of the paper is to better understand these kind of phenomena throughout two prototypic operators: The relativistic heat equation and the porous media flux-limited equation. The Abel differential equation $y^{\prime }=p(x)y^{3}+q(x)y^{2}$ with polynomial coefficients $p,q$ is said to have a center on $[a,b]$ if all its solutions, with the initial value $y(a)$ small enough, satisfy the condition $y(a)=y(b)$. The problem of giving conditions on $(p,q,a,b)$ implying a center for the Abel equation is analogous to the classical Poincaré center-focus problem for plane vector fields. Center conditions are provided by an infinite system of ‘center equations’. During the last two decades, important new information on these equations has been obtained via a detailed analysis of two related structures: composition algebra and moment equations (first-order approximation of the center ones). Recently, one of the basic open questions in this direction—the ‘polynomial moments problem’—has been completely settled in Pakovich and Muzychuk [Solution of the polynomial moment problem. Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)99(3) (2009), 633–657] and Pakovich [Generalized ‘second Ritt theorem’ and explicit solution of the polynomial moment problem. Compositio Math.149 (2013), 705–728]. In this paper, we present a progress in the following two main directions: first, we translate the results of Pakovich and Muzychuk [Solution of the polynomial moment problem. Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)99(3) (2009), 633–657] and Pakovich [Generalized ‘second Ritt theorem’ and explicit solution of the polynomial moment problem. Compositio Math.149 (2013), 705–728] into the language of algebraic geometry of the center equations. Applying these new tools, we show that the center conditions can be described in terms of composition algebra, up to a ‘small’ correction. In particular, we significantly extend the results of Briskin, Roytvarf and Yomdin [Center conditions at infinity for Abel differential equations. Ann. of Math. (2)172(1) (2010), 437–483]. Second, applying these tools in combination with explicit computations, we start in this paper the study of the ‘second Melnikov coefficients’ (second-order approximation of the center equations), showing that in many cases vanishing of the moments and of these coefficients is sufficient in order to completely characterize centers.

A classical result of A.~D. Alexandrov states that a connected compact smooth $n$-dimen\-sional manifold without boundary, embedded in $ {\mathbb R}^{n+1}$, and such that its mean curvature is constant, is a sphere. Here we study the problem of symmetry of $M$ in a hyperplane $X_{n+1}={\rm const}$ in case $M$ satisfies: for any two points $(X', X_{n+1})$, $(X', \widehat X_{n+1})$ on $M$, with $X_{n+1}>\widehat X_{n+1}$, the mean curvature at the first is not greater than that at the second. Symmetry need not always hold, but in this paper, we establish it under some additional condition for $n=1$. Some variations of the Hopf Lemma are also presented. Part II [Y.Y. Li and L. Nirenberg, Chinese Ann. Math. Ser. B 27 (2006), 193--218] deals with corresponding higher dimensional problems. Several open problems for higher dimensions are described in this paper as well.

In this paper, we obtain the weighted boundedness for the local multi(sub)linear Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators and local multilinear fractional integral operators associated with the local Muckenhoupt weights on Gaussian measure spaces. We deal with these problems by introducing a new pointwise equivalent "radial" definitions of these local operators. Moreover using a similar approach, we also get the weighted boundedness for the local fractional maximal operators with rough kernel and local fractional integral operators with rough kernel on Gaussian measure spaces., Comment: 17 pages

In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for the coupled Stokes-Darcy model with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. We use the weak Galerkin method to discretize the Stokes equation and the mixed finite element method to the Darcy equation. This paper concerns the nonautonomous reaction-diffusion equation \[ u_t=u_{xx}+ug(t,x-ct,u), \quad t>0,x\in\mathbb{R}, \] where $c\in\mathbb{R}$ is the shifting speed, and the time periodic nonlinearity $ug(t,��,u)$ is asymptotically of KPP type as $��\to-\infty$ and is negative as $��\to+\infty$. Under a subhomogeneity condition, we show that there is $c^*>0$ such that a unique forced time periodic wave exists if and only $|c|< c^*$ and it attracts other solutions in a certain sense according to the tail behavior of initial values. The concept of asymptotically nonexpansive mappings is an important generalization of the class of nonexpansive mappings. Implicit midpoint procedures are extremely fundamental for solving equations involving nonlinear operators. This paper studies the convergence analysis of the class of asymptotically nonexpansive mappings by the implicit midpoint iterative procedures. The necessary conditions for the convergence of the class of asymptotically nonexpansive mappings are established, by using a well-known iterative algorithm which plays important roles in the computation of fixed points of nonlinear mappings. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the convergence result. Under relaxed conditions on the parameters, some algorithms and strong convergence results were derived to obtain some results in the literature as corollaries., Comment: 12 pages

The aim of this paper is to draw attention to an interesting semilinear parabolic equation that arose when describing the chaotic dynamics of a polymer molecule in a liquid. This equation is nonlocal in time and contains a term, called the interaction potential, that depends on the time-integral of the solution over the entire interval of solving the problem. In fact, one needs to know the "future" in order to determine the coefficient in this term, i.e., the causality principle is violated. The existence of a weak solution of the initial boundary value problem is proven. The interaction potential satisfies fairly general conditions and can have an arbitrary growth at infinity. The paper deals with the homogenization of a linear Boltzmann equation by the means of the sigma-convergence method. Under a general deterministic assumption on the coefficients of the equation, we prove that the density of the particles converges to a solution of a drift-diffusion equation. We exploit the idea to use the maximal-entropy method, successfully tested in information theory and statistical thermodynamics, to determine approximating function's coefficients and squared errors' weights simultaneously as output of one single problem in least-square approximation. We provide evidence of the method's capabilities and performance through its application to representative test cases by working with polynomials as a first step. In this paper we define a non-iterative transformation method for an Extended Blasius Problem. The original non-iterative transformation method, which is based on scaling invariance properties, was defined for the classical Blasius problem by T\"opfer in 1912. This method allows us to solve numerically a boundary value problem by solving a related initial value problem and then rescaling the obtained numerical solution. In recent years, we have seen applications of the non-iterative transformation method to several problems of interest. We show quantitative stability results for the geometric "cells" arising in semi-discrete optimal transport problems. Our results show two types of stability, the first is stability of the associated Laguerre cells in measure, without any connectedness or regularity assumptions on the source measure. The second is stability in Hausdorff measure, under a Poincar{\`e}-Wirtinger inequality and a regularity assumption equivalent to the Ma-Trudinger-Wang conditions of regularity in Monge-Amp{\`e}re. This last result also yields stability in the uniform norm of the dual potential functions, all three stability results come with explicit quantitative bounds. In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions for the permanence of a family of nonautonomous systems of delay differential equations. This family includes structured models from mathematical biology, with either discrete or distributed delays in both the linear and nonlinear terms, and where typically the nonlinear terms are nonmonotone. In this paper we consider some rational approximations to the fractional powers of self-adjoint positive operators, arising from the Gauss–Laguerre rules. We derive practical error estimates that can be used to select a priori the number of Laguerre points necessary to achieve a given accuracy. We also present some numerical experiments to show the effectiveness of our approaches and the reliability of the estimates.

In this paper, we consider the diffusive Nicholson’s blowflies model in spatially heterogeneous environment when the diffusion rate is large. We show that the ratio of the average of the maximum per capita egg production rate to that of the death rate affects the dynamics of the model. The unique positive steady state is locally asymptotically stable if the ratio is less than a critical value. However, when the ratio is greater than the critical value, large time delay can make the unique positive steady state unstable through a Hopf bifurcation. In particular, the first Hopf bifurcation value tends to that of the “average” DDE model when the diffusion rate tends to infinity. Moreover, we show that the direction of the Hopf bifurcation is forward, and the bifurcating periodic solution from the first Hopf bifurcation value is orbitally asymptotically stable, which improves the earlier result by Wei and Li (Nonlinear Anal 60(7):1351–1367, 2005).

This paper is devoted to variational problems on the set of probability measures which involve optimal transport between unequal dimensional spaces. In particular, we study the minimization of a functional consisting of the sum of a term reflecting the cost of (unequal dimensional) optimal transport between one fixed and one free marginal, and another functional of the free marginal (of various forms). Motivating applications include Cournot-Nash equilibria where the strategy space is lower dimensional than the space of agent types. For a variety of different forms of the term described above, we show that a nestedness condition, which is known to yield much improved tractability of the optimal transport problem, holds for any minimizer. Depending on the exact form of the functional, we exploit this to find local differential equations characterizing solutions, prove convergence of an iterative scheme to compute the solution, and prove regularity results.

We consider a one-dimensional system arising from a chemotaxis model in tumour angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. This hyperbolic-parabolic system is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves), and in literature, their nonlinear stability has been considered in the class of certain mean-zero small perturbations. We show the global existence of solution without assuming the mean-zero condition for any initial data as arbitrarily large perturbations around traveling waves in the Sobolev space H 1 while the shock strength is assumed to be small enough. The main novelty of this paper is to develop the global well-posedness of any large H 1 -perturbations of traveling waves connecting two different end states. The discrepancy of the end states is linked to the complexity of the corresponding flux, which requires a new type of an energy estimate. To overcome this issue, we use the a priori contraction estimate of a weighted relative entropy functional up to a translation, which was proved by Choi-Kang-Kwon-Vasseur [4] . The boundedness of the shift implies a priori bound of the relative entropy functional without the shift on any time interval of existence, which produces a H 1 -estimate thanks to a De Giorgi type lemma. Moreover, to remove possibility of vacuum appearance, we use the lemma again.

In this paper we prove a hybrid subconvexity bound for class group $L$-functions associated to a quadratic extension $K/\mathbb{Q}$ (real or imaginary). Our proof relies on relating the class group $L$-functions to Eisenstein series evaluated at Heegner points using formulas due to Hecke. The main technical contribution is the following uniform sup norm bound for Eisenstein series $E(z,1/2+it)\ll_\varepsilon y^{1/2} (|t|+1)^{1/3+\varepsilon}, y\gg 1$, extending work of Blomer and Titchmarsh. We consider a partially hinged rectangular plate and its normal modes. The dynamical properties of the plate are influenced by the spectrum of the associated eingenvalue problem. In order to improve the stability of the plate, it seems reasonable to place a certain amount of stiffening material in appropriate regions. If we look at the partial differential equation appearing in the model, this corresponds to insert a suitable weight coefficient inside the equation. A possible way to locate such regions is to study the eigenvalue problem associated to the aforementioned weighted equation. In the present paper we focus our attention essentially on the first eigenvalue and on its minimization in terms of the weight. We consider the diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation u t − Δ u = | ∇ u | p in a bounded planar domain with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. It is known that, for p > 2 , the solutions to this problem can exhibit gradient blow-up (GBU) at the boundary. In this paper we study the possibility of the GBU set being reduced to a single point. In a previous work [Y.-X. Li, Ph. Souplet, 2009], it was shown that single point GBU solutions can be constructed in very particular domains, i.e. locally flat domains and disks. Here, we prove the existence of single point GBU solutions in a large class of domains, for which the curvature of the boundary may be nonconstant near the GBU point. Our strategy is to use a boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system, combined with suitable auxiliary functions and appropriate monotonicity properties of the solution. The derivation and analysis of the parabolic equations satisfied by the auxiliary functions necessitate long and technical calculations involving boundary-fitted coordinates.

By work of John Tate we can associate an epsilon factor with every multiplicative character of a local field. In this paper, we determine the explicit signs of the epsilon factors for symplectic type characters of K × {K^{\times}} , where K / F {K/F} is a wildly ramified quadratic extension of a non-Archimedean local field F of characteristic zero.

In this paper, we first prove an isomorphism between certain spaces of Jacobi forms. Using this isomorphism, we study the mod p theory of Hermitian Jacobi forms over ℚ ⁢ ( i ) {\mathbb{Q}(i)} . We then apply the mod p theory of Hermitian Jacobi forms to characterize U ⁢ ( p ) {U(p)} congruences and to study Ramanujan-type congruences for Hermitian Jacobi forms and Hermitian modular forms of degree 2 over ℚ ⁢ ( i ) {\mathbb{Q}(i)} .

The global analysis of the shadow Gierer-Meinhardt system with multiplicative white noise and general linear boundary conditions is investigated in this paper. For this reaction-diffusion system, we employ a fixed point argument to prove local existence and uniqueness. Our results on global existence are based on a priori estimates of solutions.

In this paper, we extend the notion of diskcyclicity and disk transitivity of a single operator to a subset of $\mathcal{B}(X)$. We establish a diskcyclicity criterion and we give the relationship between this criterion and the diskcyclicity. As applications, we study the diskcyclicty of $C_0$-semigroups and $C$-regularized groups of operators. This work is devoted to the geometric-theoretic analysis of the nodal set of solutions to degenerate or singular equations involving a class of operators including L a = div ( | y | a ∇ ) , with a ∈ ( − 1 , 1 ) and their perturbations. As they belong to the Muckenhoupt class A 2 , these operators appear in the seminal works of Fabes, Kenig, Jerison and Serapioni [1] , [2] , [3] and have recently attracted a lot of attention in the last decade due to their link to the localization of the fractional Laplacian via the extension in one more dimension [4] . Our goal in the present paper is to develop a complete theory of the stratification properties for the nodal set of solutions of such equations in the spirit of the seminal works of Hardt, Simon, Han and Lin [5] , [6] , [7] .

The quad-curl term is an essential part of the resistive magnetohydrodynamic equation and the fourth-order inverse electromagnetic scattering problem, which are both of great significance in science and engineering. It is desirable to develop efficient and practical numerical methods for the quad-curl problem. In this paper we first present some new regularity results for the quad-curl problem on Lipschitz polyhedron domains, and then propose a mixed finite element method for solving the quad-curl problem. With a novel discrete Sobolev imbedding inequality for the piecewise polynomials, we obtain stability results and derive error estimates based on a relatively low-regularity assumption of the exact solution.

The Hamiltonian coupled-mode theory (HCMT), recently derived by Athanassoulis and Papoutsellis [1], provides an efficient new approach for solving fully nonlinear water-wave problems over arbitrary bathymetry. In HCMT, heavy use is made of the roots of a local, water-wave dispersion relation with varying parameter, which have to be calculated at every horizontal position and every time instant. Thus, fast and accurate calculation of these roots, valid for all possible values of the varying parameter, are of fundamental importance. In this paper, new, semi-explicit and highly accurate root-finding formulae are derived, especially for the roots corresponding to evanescent modes. The derivation is based on the successive application of a Picard-type iteration and the Householder's root finding method. Explicit approximate formulae of very good accuracy are obtained, which are adequate to support HCMT for many types of applications. In most demanding cases, e.g. very steep, deep-water waves, machine-accurate determination of the required roots is achieved by no more than three iterations, using the explicit forms as initial values. Exploiting this root-finding procedure in the HCMT, results in an efficient, numerical solver able to treat fully nonlinear water waves over arbitrary bathymetry. We present and analyze a novel wavelet–Fourier technique for the numerical treatment of multidimensional advection–diffusion–reaction equations based on the COmpRessed SolvING (CORSING) paradigm. Combining the Petrov–Galerkin technique with the compressed sensing approach the proposed method is able to approximate the largest coefficients of the solution with respect to a biorthogonal wavelet basis. Namely, we assemble a compressed discretization based on randomized subsampling of the Fourier test space and we employ sparse recovery techniques to approximate the solution to the partial differential equation (PDE). In this paper we provide the first rigorous recovery error bounds and effective recipes for the implementation of the CORSING technique in the multidimensional setting. Our theoretical analysis relies on new estimates for the local $a$-coherence, which measures interferences between wavelet and Fourier basis functions with respect to the metric induced by the PDE operator. The stability and robustness of the proposed scheme are shown by numerical illustrations in the one-, two- and three-dimensional cases.

In this paper we consider an advection-diffusion equation, in one space dimension, whose diffusivity can be negative. Such equations arise in particular in the modeling of vehicular traffic flows or crowds dynamics, where a negative diffusivity simulates aggregation phenomena. We focus on traveling-wave solutions that connect two states whose diffusivity has different signs; under some geometric conditions we prove the existence, uniqueness (in a suitable class of solutions avoiding plateaus) and sharpness of the corresponding profiles. Such results are then extended to the case of end states where the diffusivity is positive but it becomes negative in some interval between them. Also the vanishing-viscosity limit is considered. At last, we provide and discuss several examples of diffusivities that change sign and show that our conditions are satisfied for a large class of them in correspondence of real data., Comment: 27 pages
