The SPIDER experiment, part of the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) at Consorzio RFX (Padua, Italy), is the prototype of the negative ion source for the ITER neutral beam injectors; the source is coupled to a 100 kV three-grid acceleration system. A Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic was installed in SPIDER to study and optimize energy distribution, aiming, uniformity and divergence of the H-/D- beam extracted from the source. The diagnostic is based on the analysis of the Doppler shifted H{\alpha}/D{\alpha} light emitted in the interaction between the beam particles and the H2/D2 molecules of the background. In 2019 the BES diagnostic in SPIDER was installed and calibrated, and it allowed to characterize the first hydrogen beams extracted from the SPIDER source, in cesium free conditions. The number of active beamlets composing the beam was reduced from 1280 to 80, affecting the BES diagnostic capabilities. This paper presents the BES diagnostic setup and discusses the first collected results. Under limited extracted current density ($\sim$ 10 A/m^2) and ion energy ($\leq$35 keV), no significant vertical beam deflection caused by the magnetic filter field in the source was detected. In some cases the beamlets were observed to be elongated in horizontal direction; beamlet divergence values down to 20 mrad and 30 mrad e-folding were measured in vertical and horizontal direction, respectively; the intensity of the Doppler shifted radiation was found to be strongly correlated to the beam current and to the beam divergence. The progressive compensation of beamlet deflections (caused by electron suppression filter fields) with increasing voltage in the extraction gap was studied., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. Measurements and a theoretical interpretation of the excitation spectrum of a two-electron quantum dot fabricated on a parabolic Ga[Al]As quantum well are reported. Experimentally, excited states are found beyond the well-known lowest singlet- and triplet states. These states can be reproduced in an exact diagonalization calculation of a parabolic dot with moderate in-plane anisotropy. The calculated spectra are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the measurement, and suggest that correlations between the electrons play a significant role in this system. Comparison of the exact results with the restricted Hartree-Fock and the generalized Heitler-London approach shows that the latter is more appropriate for this system because it can account for the spatial correlation of the electron states., Comment: ICPS28 (Vienna 2006) conference paper announcing early experimental results in semiconductor quantum dots that were successfully interpreted as a signature (strong suppression of the singlet-triplet gap) of Wigner-molecule formation, in accordance with previous theoretical work and predictions; see Ref. In a previous paper, we found that proton temperatures are clearly associated with the proton-scale turbulence in the solar wind, and magnetic helicity signature appears to be an important indicator in the association. Based on 15 years of in situ measurements, the present paper further investigates the magnetic helicity of solar wind turbulence and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures. Results show that the presence of the helicity signature is very common in solar wind turbulence at scales $0.3 \lesssim k\rho_p \lesssim 1$, with $k$ being the wavenumber and $\rho_p$ the proton gyroradius. The sign of the helicity is mostly positive, indicating the dominance of right-handed polarization of the turbulence. The helicity magnitude usually increases with $k$ and $\beta_{{\parallel}p}$ (the proton parallel beta) when $k\rho_p$ and $\beta_{{\parallel}p}$ are less than unity. As helicity magnitude increases, the power index of the energy spectrum becomes more negative, and the proton temperatures $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ rise significantly, where $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ are the perpendicular and parallel temperatures with respect to the background magnetic field. In particular, the rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ is faster than $T_{{\parallel}p}$ when $\beta_{{\parallel}p} < 1$ is satisfied. The faster rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ with the helicity magnitude may be interpreted as the result of the preferentially perpendicular heating of solar wind protons by kinetic Alfv\'en wave (KAW) turbulence., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

A statistical analysis of 15,210 electron velocity distribution function (VDF) fits, observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the $Wind$ spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented. This is the second in a three-part series on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The electron velocity moment statistics for the dense, low energy core, tenuous, hot halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl are a statistically significant list of values illustrated with both histograms and tabular lists for reference and baselines in future work. The beam/strahl fit results in the upstream are currently the closest thing to a proper parameterization of the beam/strahl electron velocity moments in the ambient solar wind. This work will also serve as a 1 AU baseline and reference for missions like $Parker \ Solar \ Probe$ and $Solar \ Orbiter$. The median density, temperature, beta, and temperature anisotropy values for the core(halo)[beam/strahl] components, with subscripts $ec$($eh$)[$eb$], of all fit results respectively are $n{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 11.3(0.36)[0.17] $cm^{-3}$, $T{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 14.6(48.4)[40.2] $eV$, $\beta{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 0.93(0.11)[0.05], and $\mathcal{A}{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 0.98(1.03)[0.93]. In this paper we address the indirect method, which can provide a powerful technique to obtain information about radiative capture reactions at astrophysically relevant energies. The idea of the indirect method is to use the indirect reaction $A(a, s\,\gamma)F$ to obtain information about the radiative capture reaction $A(x,\,\gamma)F$, where $a=(s\,x)$ and $F=(x\,A)$. The main advantage of using the indirect reactions is the absence of the penetrability factor in the channel $x+A$, which suppresses the low-energy cross sections of the $A(x,\,\gamma)F$ reactions and does not allow to measure these reactions at astrophysical energies. A general formalism to treat indirect resonant radiative capture reactions is developed when only a few intermediate states do contribute and statistical approach cannot be applied. Angular dependence of the triple differential cross section at fixed scattering angle of the spectator $s$ is the angular $\gamma-s$ correlation function. Using indirect resonant radiative capture reactions one can obtain the information about important astrophysical resonant radiative capture reactions, like $(p,\,\gamma), \,\,(\alpha,\,\gamma)$ and $(n,\,\gamma)$ on stable and unstable isotopes. The indirect technique makes accessible low-lying resonances, which are close to the threshold, and even subthreshold bound states located at negative energies. In this paper, after developing the general formalism, we demonstrated the application of the indirect reaction ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{6}{\rm Li},d\,\gamma){}^{16}{\rm O}$ proceeding through $1^{-}$ and $2^{+}$ subthreshold bound states and resonances to obtain the information about the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\alpha,\,\gamma){}^{16}{\rm O}$ radiative capture at astrophysically most effective energy $0.3$ MeV what is impossible using standard direct measurements., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we report a new type of instability of electron holes (EHs) interacting with passing ions. The nonlinear interaction of EHs and ions is investigated using a new theory of hole kinematics. It is shown that the oscillation in the velocity of the EH parallel to the magnetic field direction becomes unstable when the hole velocity in the ion frame is slower than a few times the cold ion sound speed. This instability leads to the emission of ion-acoustic waves from the solitary hole and decay in its magnitude. The instability mechanism can drive significant perturbations in the ion density. The instability threshold, oscillation frequency and instability growth rate derived from the theory yield quantitative agreement with the observations from a novel high-fidelity hole-tracking Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, paper submitted to Journal of Plasma Physics

Energetic electrons with power-law spectrum are most commonly observed in astrophysics. This paper investigates electron cyclotron maser emission (ECME) from the power-law electrons, in which strong pitch-angle anisotropy is emphasized. The electron distribution function proposed in this paper can describe various types of pitch-angle anisotropy. Results show that the emission properties of ECME, including radiation growth, propagation, and frequency properties, depend considerably on the types of electron pitch-angle anisotropy, and different wave modes show different dependences on the pitch angle of electrons. In particular, the maximum growth rate of X2 mode rapidly decreases with respect to the electron pitch-angle cosine $\mu_0$ at which the electron distribution peaks, while the growth rates for other modes (X1, O1, O2) initially increase before decreasing as $\mu_0$ increases. Moreover, the O mode as well as the X mode can be the fastest growth mode, in terms of not only the plasma parameter but also the type of electron pitch-angle distribution. This result presents a significant extension of the recent researches on ECME driven by the lower-energy cutoff of power-law electrons, in which the X mode is generally the fastest growth mode., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The paper devoted to investigation of volume reflection and channeling processes of ultrarela- tivistic positive charged particles moving in germanium single crystals. We demonstrate that the choice of atomic potential on the basis of Hartree-Fock method and correct choice of Debye tem- perature allow us to describe the above mentioned processes in a good agreement with the recent experiments. Moreover, the presented in the paper universal form of equations for volume reflection gives true description of the process at a wide range of particle energies. Any injection of electromagnetically interacting particles during the cosmic dark ages will lead to increased ionization, heating, production of Lyman-alpha photons and distortions to the energy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background, with potentially observable consequences. In this note we describe numerical results for the low-energy electrons and photons produced by the cooling of particles injected at energies from keV to multi-TeV scales, at arbitrary injection redshifts (but focusing on the post-recombination epoch). We use these data, combined with existing calculations modeling the cooling of these low-energy particles, to estimate the resulting contributions to ionization, excitation and heating of the gas, and production of low-energy photons below the threshold for excitation and ionization. We compute corrected deposition-efficiency curves for annihilating dark matter, and demonstrate how to compute equivalent curves for arbitrary energy-injection histories. These calculations provide the necessary inputs for the limits on dark matter annihilation presented in the accompanying Paper I, but also have potential applications in the context of dark matter decay or de-excitation, decay of other metastable species, or similar energy injections from new physics. We demonstrate the optical levitation or trapping in helium gas of a single quantum dot (QD) within a liquid droplet. Bright single photon emission from the levitated QD in the droplet was observed for more than 200 s. The observed photon count rates are consistent with the value theoretically estimated from the two-photon-action cross section. This paper presents the realization of an optically levitated solid-state quantum emitter. We show the emergence of a new type of dispersion relation for neutral atoms with an interesting similarity with the spectrum of 2-dimensional electrons in an applied perpendicular constant magnetic field. These neutral atoms can be confined in toroidal optical traps and give quasi Landau spectra. In strong contrast to the equi-distant infinitely degenerate Landau levels for charged particles, the spectral gap for such 2-dimensional neutral particles increases in particular electric field configurations. In the innermost regions of low-luminosity accretion flows, including Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy, the frequency of Coulomb collisions is so low that the plasma is two-temperature, with the ions substantially hotter than the electrons. This paradigm assumes that Coulomb collisions are the only channel for transferring the ion energy to the electrons. In this work, the second of a series, we assess the efficiency of electron heating by ion velocity-space instabilities in collisionless accretion flows. The instabilities are seeded by the pressure anisotropy induced by magnetic field amplification, coupled to the adiabatic invariance of the particle magnetic moments. Using two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we showed in Paper I that if the electron-to-ion temperature ratio is < 0.2, the ion cyclotron instability is the dominant mode for values of ion beta_i ~ 5-30 (here, beta_i is the ratio of ion thermal pressure to magnetic pressure), as appropriate for the midplane of low-luminosity accretion flows. In this work, we employ analytical theory and 1D PIC simulations (with the box aligned with the fastest growing wavevector of the ion cyclotron mode) to fully characterize how the electron heating efficiency during the growth of the ion cyclotron instability depends on the electron-to-proton temperature ratio, the plasma beta, the Alfven speed, the amplification rate of the mean field (in units of the ion Larmor frequency) and the proton-to-electron mass ratio. Our findings can be incorporated as a physically-grounded sub-grid model into global fluid simulations of low-luminosity accretion flows, thus helping to assess the validity of the two-temperature assumption., 18 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, 2 appendices, submitted to ApJ. Mie scattering theory is used to calculate radiation forces on a dielectric microsphere illuminated by evanescent waves, produced by laser light transmitted obliquely through a flat horizontal dielectric surface. The incident field is identified with the evanescent field, and both $p$ and $s$ polarizations are considered. Our investigation consists of three parts. First, after highlighting the basic formalism, we report results for the radiation force published in an earlier paper [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B {\bf 12}, 2429 (1995)], correcting a few trivial calculational errors. Second - the main objective of our paper - is to show how the vertical (lifting) force on microspheres, typically via a proper adjustment of the laser frequency, can be used to separate spheres differing by a slight amount in their refractive index. This is caused by an oscillatory behavior in the force with respect to the nondimensional wave number $\alpha$ in the surrounding medium. Fine-tuning the wave number $\alpha$, relative to the given refractive indices in the system, may lead to particle expulsion. The sorting mechanism turns out to be feasible when $\alpha$ is about 18-20 or larger, which actually is in the region of practical interest. Finally, we investigate how variations in the angle of incidence $\theta_1$ for the laser beam influences the resulting radiation force., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We derive a set of self-consistent marginally stable states for a system of ion-cyclotron waves propagating parallel to the large-scale magnetic field through a homogeneous proton-electron plasma. The proton distributions and the wave dispersions are related through the condition that no further ion-cyclotron resonant particle scattering or wave growth/damping may take place. The thermal anisotropy of the protons in these states therefore defines the threshold value for triggering the proton-cyclotron anisotropy instability. A number of recent papers have noted that the anisotropy of solar wind protons at 1 AU does not seem to be limited by the proton-cyclotron anisotropy threshold, even at low plasma beta. However, this puzzle seems to be due solely to the estimation of this anisotropy threshold under the assumption that the protons have a bi-Maxwellian distribution. We note that bi-Maxwellian distributions are never marginally stable to the resonant cyclotron interaction, so these estimates do not represent physically valid thresholds. The threshold anisotropies obtained from our marginally stable states are much larger, as a function of proton parallel beta, than the bi-Maxwellian estimates, and we show that the measured data remains below these more rigorous thresholds. Thus, the results of this paper resolve the apparent contradiction presented by the solar wind anisotropy observations at 1 AU: The bi-Maxwellian anisotropies are not rigorous thresholds, and so do not limit the proton distributions in the solar wind., Comment: in press in Astrophys. This paper presents a setup capable of producing a high-flux continuous beam of cold rubidium atoms for cavity QED experiments in the regime of strong coupling. A 2 $D^+$ MOT, loaded by rubidium getters in a dry film coated vapor cell, fed a secondary moving-molasses MOT (MM-MOT) at a rate of 1.5 x $10^{10}$ atoms/sec. The MM-MOT provided a continuous beam with tunable velocity. This beam was then directed through the waist of a 280 $\mu$m cavity resulting in a Rabi splitting of more than +/- 10 MHz. The presence of sufficient number of atoms in the cavity mode also enabled splitting in the polarization perpendicular to the input. The cavity was in the strong coupling regime, with parameters (g, $\kappa$, $\gamma$)/2$\pi$ equal to (7, 3, 6)/ 2$\pi$ MHz., Comment: Journal paper

A controversy exists among literature reports of constraints on elastic constants. In particular, it has been reported that embedded atom method (EAM) potentials generally impose three constraints on elastic constants of crystals that are inconsistent with experiments. However, it can be shown that some EAM potentials do not impose such constraints at all. This paper first resolves this controversy by identifying the necessary condition when the constraints exist and demonstrating the condition is physically necessary. Furthermore, this paper reports that these three constraints are eliminated under all conditions, by using response EAM (R-EAM) potentials.

A number of different effects which influence plasma screening properties are considered. In a previous paper, we showed that the decay rate of a muon is only slightly affected by the presence of a circularly polarized laser and we gave an analytic expression for the correction. A short laser pulse in wide range of wavelengths, from infrared to X-ray, disturbs electron–ion equilibrium and increases pressure in a heated layer. The case where the pulse duration τ L is shorter than acoustic relaxation time t s is considered in the paper. It is shown that this short pulse may cause thermomechanical phenomena such as spallative ablation regardless of wavelength. While the physics of electron–ion relaxation strongly depends on wavelength and various electron spectra of substances: there are spectra with an energy gap in semiconductors and dielectrics opposed to gapless continuous spectra in metals. The paper describes entire sequence of thermomechanical processes from expansion, nucleation, foaming, and nanostructuring to spallation with particular attention to spallation by X-ray pulse.

We develop simple density-matrix models to describe the role of coherence in resonant-tunneling (RT) transport of quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs). Specifically, we investigate the effects of coherent coupling between the lasing levels with other levels on the transport properties and gain spectra. In the first part of the paper, we use a three-level density-matrix model to obtain useful analytical expressions for current transport through the injector barrier in a QCL. An expression for the slope discontinuity in the current-voltage characteristics at the lasing threshold is derived. This value is shown to be a direct measure of the population inversion at threshold, and contradicts the previously held belief of it being indicative of ratio of the laser level lifetimes. In the second part of the paper, we use density matrices to compute the gain spectrum for a resonant-phonon terahertz QCL design. The large anticrossing of the doublet of lower radiative levels is reflected in a broad gain linewidth due to a coherent RT assisted depopulation process. At certain bias conditions, the gain spectrum exhibits double peaks which is supported by experimental observations., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

The theory and experiments concerned with the electron-ion thermal relaxation and melting of overheated crystal lattice constitute the subject of this paper. The physical model includes two-temperature equation of state, many-body interatomic potential, the electron-ion energy exchange, electron thermal conductivity, and optical properties of solid, liquid, and two phase solid-liquid mixture. Two-temperature hydrodynamics and molecular dynamics codes are used. An experimental setup with pump-probe technique is used to follow evolution of an irradiated target with a short time step 100 fs between the probe femtosecond laser pulses. Accuracy of measurements of reflection coefficient and phase of reflected probe light are ~1% and $\sim 1\un{nm}$, respectively. Precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy on scales $\ell > 500$ will be available in the near future. Successful interpretation of these data is dependent on a detailed understanding of the damping tail and cosmological recombination of both hydrogen and helium. This paper and two companion papers are devoted to a precise calculation of helium recombination. We discuss several aspects of the standard recombination picture, and then include feedback, radiative transfer in HeI lines with partial redistribution, and continuum opacity from HI photoionization. In agreement with past calculations, we find that HeII recombination proceeds in Saha equilibrium, whereas HeI recombination is delayed relative to Saha due to the low rates connecting excited states of HeI to the ground state. The present paper extends the method of Anstee, Barklem and O'Mara (Anstee 1992; Anstee & O'Mara 1991, 1995; Anstee, O'Mara & Ross 1997; Barklem 1998; Barklem & O'Mara 1997; Barklem, O'Mara & Ross 1998), developed during the 1990's for collisional line broadening by atomic hydrogen, to the depolarization of spectral lines of neutral atoms by collisions with atomic hydrogen. In the present paper, we will limit the calculations to p (l=1) atomic levels. The depolarization cross sections and depolarization rates are computed. In Table 2 cross sections as functions of the relative velocity and effective quantum number are given, allowing for the computation for any p atomic level. Our results are compared to quantum chemistry calculations where possible. The sensitivity of depolarization cross sections to regions of the potential is examined. We conclude that the accuracy obtained with our method (< 20 % for the depolarization rates) is promising for its extension to higher l-values for the interpretation of the ``second solar spectrum''. We investigate strong coupling effects on the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance describes a composite quasi-Boson, which can give rise to an additional pairing interaction between the Fermi atoms. This attractive interaction becomes stronger as the threshold energy of the Feshbach resonance two-particle bound state is lowered. In a recent paper, we showed that in the uniform Fermi gas, this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to a BCS-BEC crossover of the Nozi`eres and Schmitt-Rink kind, in which the BCS-type superfluid phase transition continuously changes into the BEC-type as the threshold energy is decreased. In this paper, we extend our previous work by including the effect of a harmonic trap potential, treated within the local density approximation (LDA). We also give results for both weak and strong coupling to the Feshbach resonance. We show that the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon strongly modifies the shape of the atomic density profile at the superfluid phase transition temperature Tc, reflecting the change of the dominant particles going from Fermi atoms to composite Bosons. In the BEC regime, these composite Bosons are shown to first appear well above Tc. We also discuss the "phase diagram" above Tc as a function of the tunable threshold energy. In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at low-to-medium impact velocities ($v/v_e \approx 1$) working on a modification of an already developed classical In this work we present an improvement over the Over Barrier Model (OBM) described in a recent paper [F. Sattin, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 62}, 042711 (2000)]. We show that: i) one of the two free parameters there introduced actually comes out consistently from the starting assumptions underlying the model; ii) the modified model thus obtained is as much accurate as the former one. Furthermore, we show that OBMs are able to accurately predict some recent results of state selective electron capture, at odds with what previously supposed., Comment: RevTeX, 7 pages, 4 eps figures. We propose an efficient method to produce multi-particle entangled states of ions in an ion trap for which a wide range of interesting effects and applications have been suggested. We show that the process of photoionizing a gas of atomic hydrogen and helium by line radiation whose energy is slightly above the helium single-ionization threshold is unstable if the helium fraction by number is less than approximately one half. However, in the two scenarios we consider here, based on the Decaying Dark Matter (DDM) model of cosmological reionization, there is no significant growth. In the first scenario we consider ionization and recombination to be approximately in equilibrium. This is relevant to high photon flux rates and early reionization, but in that case the heating is balanced by Compton cooling, which is very stabilizing. In the second scenario we ignore recombination. This is relevant to low photon flux rates or to the last stage of the reionization. In this paper, we present the spectroscopy of 6P$_{1/2}$ state in $^{87}$Rb using double resonance technique at $780~\text{nm}$ and $421~\text{nm}$. The double resonance technique is implemented using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and optical pumping methods. Spectropolarimetric measurements of gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows contain polarization information for both continuum and absorption lines. Based on the Zeeman effect, an absorption line in a strong magnetic field is polarized and split into a triplet. In this paper, we solve the polarization radiative transfer equations of the absorption lines, and obtain the degree of linear polarization of the absorption lines as a function of the optical depth. In order to effectively measure the degree of linear polarization for the absorption lines, a magnetic field strength of at least $10^3$ G is required. The metal elements that produce the polarized absorption lines should be sufficiently abundant and have large oscillation strengths or Einstein absorption coefficients. We encourage both polarization measurements and high-dispersion observations of the absorption lines in order to detect the triplet structure in early GRB optical afterglows., Comment: ApJ accepted

The total number of electrons in a classical microplasma can be non-intrusively measured through elastic in-phase coherent microwave scattering (CMS). Here, we establish a theoretical basis for the CMS diagnostic technique with an emphasis on Thomson and collisional scattering in short, thin unmagnetized plasma media. Experimental validation of the diagnostic is subsequently performed via linearly polarized, variable frequency microwave scattering off laser induced air-based microplasmas with diverse ionization and collisional features. Namely, conducted studies include a verification of short-dipole-like radiation behavior, plasma volume imaging via intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) photography, and measurements of relative phases, total scattering cross sections, and total number of electrons $N_e$ in the generated plasma filaments following absolute calibration using a dielectric scattering sample. Findings of the paper suggest an ideality of the diagnostic in the Thomson "free-electron" regime - where a detailed knowledge of plasma and collisional properties (which are often difficult to accurately characterize due to the potential influence of inhomogeneities, local temperatures and densities, present species, and so on) is unnecessary to extract $N_e$ from the scattered signal., Comment: 27 Pages, 5 Figures

Resonances with electromagnetic whistler-mode waves are the primary driver for the formation and dynamics of energetic electron fluxes in various space plasma systems, including shock waves and planetary radiation belts. The basic and most elaborated theoretical framework for the description of the integral effect of multiple resonant interactions is the quasilinear theory, which operates through electron diffusion in velocity space. The quasilinear diffusion rate scales linearly with the wave intensity, ${D}_{\mathrm{QL}}\ensuremath{\sim}{B}_{w}^{2}$, which should be small enough to satisfy the applicability criteria of this theory. Spacecraft measurements, however, often detect whistle-mode waves sufficiently intense to resonate with electrons nonlinearly. Such nonlinear resonant interactions imply effects of phase trapping and phase bunching, which may quickly change the electron fluxes in a nondiffusive manner. Both regimes of electron resonant interactions (diffusive and nonlinear) are well studied, but there is no theory quantifying the transition between these two regimes. In this paper we describe the integral effect of nonlinear electron interactions with whistler-mode waves in terms of the timescale of electron distribution relaxation, $\ensuremath{\sim}1/{D}_{\mathrm{NL}}$. We determine the scaling of ${D}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ with wave intensity ${B}_{w}^{2}$ and other main wave characteristics, such as wave-packet size. The comparison of ${D}_{\mathrm{QL}}$ and ${D}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ provides the range of wave intensity and wave-packet sizes where the electron distribution evolves at the same rates for the diffusive and nonlinear resonant regimes. The obtained results are discussed in the context of energetic electron dynamics in the Earth's radiation belt.

The understanding of the ro-vibrational dynamics in molecular (near)-atmospheric pressure plasmas is essential to investigate the influence of vibrational excited molecules on the discharge properties. In a companion paper Kuhfeld et al (2021 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 54 305204), results of ro-vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) measurements for a nanosecond pulsed plasma jet consisting of two conducting molybdenum electrodes with a gap of 1 mm in nitrogen at 200 mbar are presented. Here, those results are discussed and compared to theoretical predictions based on rate coefficients for the relevant processes found in the literature. It is found, that during the discharge the measured vibrational excitation agrees well with predictions obtained from the rates for resonant electron collisions calculated by Laporta et al (2014 Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 23 065002). The predictions are based on the electric field during the discharge, measured by electric field induced second harmonic generation Kuhfeld et al (2021 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 54 305204), Lepikhin et al (2020 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 54 055201) and the electron density, which is deduced from the field and mobility data calculated with Bolsig+ Hagelaar and Pitchford (2005 Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 14 722–33). In the afterglow a simple kinetic simulation for the vibrational subsystem of nitrogen is performed and it is found, that the populations of vibrational excited states develop according to vibrational-vibrational transfer on timescales of a few microseconds, while the development on timescales of some hundred microseconds is determined by the losses at the walls. No significant influence of electronically excited states on the populations of the vibrational states visible in the CARS measurements ( v ≲ 7 ) was observed.

We discuss the detection of 14 rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, obtained with the iSHELL spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea. Our observations in the 3.49 - 4.13 $\mu$m spectral region, obtained with a 0.375" slit width that provided a spectral resolving power $\lambda/\Delta \lambda \sim 80,000$, have resulted in the unequivocal detection of the $R(0) - R(3)$ and $P(1)-P(10)$ transitions within the $v=1-0$ band of CH$^+$. The $R$-branch transitions are anomalously weak relative to the $P$-branch transitions, a behavior that is explained accurately by rovibronic calculations of the transition dipole moment reported in a companion paper (Changala et al. 2021). Nine infrared transitions of H$_2$ were also detected in these observations, comprising the $S(8)$, $S(9)$, $S(13)$ and $S(15)$ pure rotational lines; the $v=1-0$ $O(4) - O(7)$ lines, and the $v=2-1$ $O(5)$ line. We present a photodissociation region model, constrained by the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ line fluxes that we measured, that includes a detailed treatment of the excitation of CH$^+$ by inelastic collisions, optical pumping, and chemical ("formation") pumping. The latter process is found to dominate the excitation of the observed rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, and the model is remarkably successful in explaining both the absolute and relative strengths of the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ lines., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Nanosecond plasmas in liquids are being used for water treatment, electrolysis, or biomedical applications. The exact nature of these very dynamic plasmas and, most importantly, their ignition physics are strongly debated. The ignition itself may be explained by two competing hypotheses: ignition in water may occur (i) via field effects at the tip of the electrode followed by tunneling of electrons in between water molecules causing field ionization or (ii) via gaseous processes of electron multiplication in nanovoids that are created from liquid ruptures due to the strong electric field gradients. Both hypotheses are supported by theory, but experimental data are very sparse due to the difficulty in monitoring the very fast processes in space and time. In this paper, we analyze nanosecond plasmas in water that are created by applying a positive and a negative polarity to a sharp tungsten electrode. The main diagnostics are fast camera measurements and fast emission spectroscopy. It is shown that plasma ignition is dominated by field effects at the electrode–liquid interface either as field ionization for positive polarity or as field emission for negative polarity. This leads to a hot tungsten surface at a temperature of 7000 K for positive polarity, whereas the surface temperature is much lower for negative polarity. At ignition, the electron density reaches 4 × 10 25 m − 3 for the positive and 2 × 10 25 m − 3 for the negative polarity. At the same time, the emission of the H α light for the positive polarity is four times higher than that for the negative polarity. During plasma propagation, the electron densities are almost identical of the order of 1– 2 × 10 25 m − 3 followed by a decay after the end of the pulse over 15 ns. It is concluded that plasma propagation is governed by field effects in a low density region that is created either by nanovoids or by density fluctuations in supercritical water surrounding the electrode that is created by the pressure and temperature at the moment of plasma ignition.

Background: Rotational bands have been measured around $^{250}\mathrm{Fm}$ associated with strong deformed-shell closures. The ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ excited band emerges systematically in $N=150$ isotones raging from plutonium to nobelium with even-$Z$ numbers, and a sharp drop in energies was observed in californium.Purpose: I attempt to uncover the microscopic mechanism for the appearance of such a low-energy ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state in $^{248}\mathrm{Cf}$. Furthermore, I investigate the possible occurrence of the low-energy ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{+}$ state, the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ vibration, to elucidate the mechanism that prefers the simultaneous breaking of the reflection and axial symmetry to the breaking of the axial symmetry alone in this mass region.Method: I employ a nuclear energy-density functional (EDF) method: the Skyrme-Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov and the quasiparticle random-phase approximation are used to describe the ground state and the transition to excited states.Results: The Skyrme-type SkM* and SLy4 functionals reproduce the fall in energy but not the absolute value of the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state at $Z=98$ where the proton two-quasiparticle excitation $[633]7/2\ensuremath{\bigotimes}[521]3/2$ plays a decisive role for the peculiar isotonic dependence. I find interweaving roles by the pairing correlation of protons and the deformed-shell closure at $Z=98$. The SkM* model predicts the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state appears lower in energy in $^{246}\mathrm{Cf}$ than in $^{248}\mathrm{Cf}$ as the Fermi level of neutrons is located in between the [622]5/2 and the [734]9/2 orbitals. Except for $^{250}\mathrm{Fm}$ in the SkM* calculation, the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{+}$ state is predicted to appear higher in energy than the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state because the quasiproton [521]1/2 orbital is located above the [633]7/2 orbital.Conclusions: A systematic study of low-lying collective states in heavy actinide nuclei provides a rigorous testing ground for microscopic nuclear models. The present paper shows a need for improvements in the EDFs to describe pairing correlations and shell structures in heavy nuclei, that are indispensable in predicting the heaviest nuclei.

In an atomic ensemble, quantum information is typically carried as single collective excitations. It is very advantageous if the creation of single excitations is efficient and robust. A Rydberg blockade enables deterministic creation of single excitations via a collective Rabi oscillation by precisely controlling the pulse area, being sensitive to many experimental parameters. In this paper, we implement the adiabatic rapid passage technique to the Rydberg excitation process in a mesoscopic atomic ensemble. We make use of a two-photon excitation scheme with an intermediate state off-resonant and sweep the laser frequency of one excitation laser. We find the chirped scheme preserves internal phases of the collective Rydberg excitation and is more robust against variance of laser intensity and frequency detuning.

The non-equilibrium ro-vibrational distribution functions of molecules in a plasma can heavily influence the discharge operation and the plasma-chemistry. A convenient method for measuring the distribution function is coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS). CARS spectra are measured in a ns-pulsed plasma between two parallel, 1 mm spaced molybdenum electrodes in nitrogen at 200 mbar with pulse durations of 200 ns/250 ns and a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The CARS spectra are analyzed by a fitting routine to extract information about the vibrational excitation of the nitrogen molecules in the plasma. It is found that during the discharge the vibrational distribution for v ≲ 7 can be described by a vibrational two-temperature distribution function. Additionally, the electric field is measured by the electric field induced second harmonic generation method during the discharge pulse. It is found to be constant in time after the initial ionization wave with values close to 81 Td for the investigated conditions. During the afterglow between two discharge pulses a more general fitting approach is used to obtain the population differences of two neighboring vibrational states. This allows to capture the more complex vibrational dynamics in that time period. The measurement results are discussed in more detail and compared to simple plasma models in a companion paper Kuhfeld et al (2021 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 54 305205).

Recent work has shown that the stress tensor components, such as energy density or pressure, of a quantum field can be subject to large vacuum fluctuations. The energy density or pressure must be averaged in time before the fluctuations can be finite, and the probability of a large fluctuation depends upon the details of the averaging and can be much larger than that predicted by a Gaussian distribution. This paper explores vacuum radiation pressure fluctuation on Rydberg atoms and their possible observable effects. The excitation and de-excitation of a Rydberg atom provide an explicit model for the time averaging of the radiation pressure, as the atomic polarizability becomes time dependent, first increasing and then decreasing again by several orders of magnitude. This switched polarizability can induce large vacuum pressure fluctuations, which can in turn temporarily transfer linear momentum to the atom and cause a recoil which might be observable., Comment: 16 pags, 4 figures

Heavy-atom alkaline earth monofluoride molecules are considered as prospective systems to study spatial parity or spatial parity and time-reversal symmetry violating effects such as the nuclear anapole moment or the electron electric dipole moment. Comprehensive and highly accurate theoretical study of the electronic structure properties and transition energies in such systems can simplify the preparation and interpretation of the experiments. However, almost no attempts to calculate quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects contribution into characteristics of neutral heavy-atom molecules have been performed. Recently, we have formulated and implemented such an approach to calculate QED contributions to transition energies of molecules [L.V.~Skripnikov, J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{154}, 201101 (2021)]. In this paper, we perform a benchmark theoretical study of the transition energies in the Ba$^+$ cation and BaF molecule. The deviation of the calculated values from the experimental ones is of the order 10 cm$^{-1}$ and is more than an order of magnitude better than the "chemical accuracy", 350 cm$^{-1}$. The achievement of such an agreement has been provided in particular by the inclusion of the QED effects. The latter appeared to be not less important than the high-order correlation effects beyond the coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple cluster amplitudes level. We compare the role of QED effects for transition energies with heavier molecules -- RaF and E120F, where E120 is the superheavy Z=120 homolog of Ra.

In this paper, we investigate the generalized seniority scheme and the validity of Generalized Seniority Schmidt Model in and around the $Z=82$ semi-magic region. A consistently same multi-j configuration is used to explain all the nuclear spectroscopic properties such as $g-$factors, $Q-$moments and $B(E2)$ trends for the ${13/2}^+$, ${12}^+$ and ${33/2}^+$ isomers in all the three Hg, Pb and Po isotopic chains. The inverted parabolic $B(E2)$ trends for the first $2^+$ states in Hg, Pb and Po isotopes are also explained using the generalized seniority scheme. In this paper, direct observation of micromotion for multiple ions in a laser-cooled trapped ion crystal is discussed along with a novel measurement technique for micromotion amplitude. Micromotion is directly observed using a time-resolving, single-photon sensitive camera that provides both fluorescence and position data for each ion on the nanosecond time scale. Micromotion amplitude and phase for each ion in the crystal are measured, allowing this method to be sensitive to tilts and shifts of the ion chain from the null of the radiofrequency quadrupole potential in the linear trap. Spatial resolution makes this micromotion detection technique suitable for complex ion configurations, including two-dimensional geometries. It does not require any additional equipment or laser beams, and the modulation of the cooling lasers or trap voltages is not necessary for detection, as it is in other methods., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figues

This paper is the first report describing how the concentrations of silicon and boron govern the cryogenic scintillation properties of n-type GaAs. It shows that valence band holes are promptly trapped on radiative centers and then combine radiatively with silicon donor band electrons at rates that increase with the density of free carriers. It also presents the range of silicon and boron concentrations needed for efficient light emission under X-ray excitation, which along with its low band gap and apparent absence of afterglow, make scintillating GaAs suitable for the detection of rare, low-energy electronic excitations from interacting dark matter particles. A total of 29 samples from four different suppliers were studied. Luminosities and timing responses were measured for the four principal emission bands centered at 860, 930, 1070, and 1335 nm, and for the total emissions. Excitation pulses of 40 kVp X-rays were provided by a light-excited X-ray tube driven by an ultra-fast laser. Scintillation emissions from 800 to 1350 nm were measured using an InGaAs photomultiplier. Within the concentration ranges of free carriers from 2 x 10^16/cm3 to 6 x 10^17/cm3 and boron from 1.5 x 10^18/cm3 to 6 x 10^18/cm3, nine samples have luminosities > 70 photons/keV and two have luminosities > 110 photons/keV. Other samples in that range have lower luminosities due to higher concentrations of non-radiative centers. Diffractometric biosensing is a promising technology to overcome critical limitations of refractometric biosensors, the dominant class of label-free optical transducers. These limitations manifest themselves by higher noise and drifts due to insufficient rejection of refractive index fluctuations caused by variation in temperature, solvent concentration, and most prominently, non-specific binding. Diffractometric biosensors overcome these limitations with inherent self-referencing on the submicron scale with no compromise on resolution. Despite this highly promising attribute, the field of diffractometric biosensors has only received limited recognition. A major reason is the lack of a general quantitative analysis. This hinders comparison to other techniques and amongst different diffractometric biosensors. For refractometric biosensors, on the other hand, such a comparison is possible by means of the refractive index unit (RIU). In this publication, we suggest the coherent surface mass density, $\Gamma_{\rm{coh}}$, as a quantity for label-free diffractometric biosensors with the same purpose as RIU in refractometric sensors. It is easy to translate $\Gamma_{\rm{coh}}$ to the total surface mass density $\Gamma_{\rm{tot}}$, which is an important parameter for many assays. We provide a generalized framework to determine $\Gamma_{\rm{coh}}$ for various diffractometric biosensing arrangements which enables quantitative comparison. Additionally, the formalism can be used to estimate background scattering in order to further optimize sensor configurations. Finally, a practical guide with important experimental considerations is given to enable readers of any background to apply the theory. Therefore, this paper provides a powerful tool for the development of diffractometric biosensors and will help the field to mature and unveil its full potential.

We calculate models of extended stellar atmospheres with a temperature in the range of 12000-40000K and a mass loss rate of $10^{-6}-10^{-4} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. A large number of objects with emission spectra, such as luminous blue variables (LBV), FeII - emission line stars, Of/late-WN stars, and even ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) often have effective temperatures in this range. In the recent publication [Opt. Expr 28, 1249 (2020)] the single photon scattering is studied in a second-order nonlinear system. In this paper, we study controllable single photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupling with an additional cavity by second order nonlinear materials in a non-cascading configuration, where the additional cavity is embedded with a two-level atom and filled with Kerr-nonlinear materials. Considering the second order nonlinear coupling, we analyze the transmission properties of the three different coupling forms as follows: (i) The two-level atom is excited without the Kerr-nonlinearity. (ii)The Kerr-nonlinearity is excited without the two-level atom. (iii) Both of the two-level atom and Kerr-nonlinearity are excited. The transmission and reflection amplitudes are obtained by the discrete coordinates approach for the three cases. The results show that the transmission properties can be adjusted by the above three different coupling forms, which indicate our scheme can be used as a single photon switch to control the transmission and reflection of the single photon in the one-dimensional coupled resonant waveguide, and which is compared to the results with a two level system [Phys. Rev. A 85, 053840 (2012)] and find the advantages.

Vapor-cell devices based on microwave interrogation provide a stable frequency reference with a compact and robust setup. Further miniaturization must focus on optimizing the physics package, containing the microwave cavity and atomic reservoir. In this paper we present a compact cavity-cell assembly based on a dielectric-loaded cylindrical resonator. The structure accommodates a clock cell with $0.9 \, \mathrm{cm^3}$ inner volume and has an outer volume of only $35 \, \mathrm{cm^3}$. The proposed design aims at strongly reducing the core of the atomic clock, maintaining at the same time high-performing short-term stability ($\sigma_y(\tau) \leq 5\times 10^{-13} \,\tau^{-1/2}$ standard Allan deviation). The proposed structure is characterized in terms of magnetic field uniformity and atom-field coupling with the aid of finite-elements calculations. The thermal sensitivity is also analyzed and experimentally characterized. We present preliminary spectroscopy results by integrating the compact cavity within a rubidium clock setup based on the pulsed optically pumping technique. The obtained clock signals are compatible with the targeted performances. This paper is dedicated to the simulation of the so-called trapping-effect observed in the Troitsk nu-mass experiment. The effect is caused by the magnetic trapping of decay electrons in the windowless gaseous tritium source and the gradual evaporation of those electrons. As a result, alongside regular tritium beta-spectrum electrons, we see additional electrons that are initially trapped in the source and escape it with changed energy. The spectrum of evaporated electrons is quite peculiar (almost flat for monochromatic initial electrons) and could not be directly measured in the experiment. So one has to rely on simulations. Also, it is possible that the same effect could be observed in other cases of magnetic traps.

Three-wave interactions between Langmuir and electromagnetic waves in plasma with unstable electron flows are believed to be the main cause of type II and III solar radio emissions. The narrow band of type II bursts requires assuming that this radiation is generated in some local regions of shock fronts traveling in the solar corona, where the specific conditions for the enhancement of electromagnetic emissions near the plasma frequency harmonics are created. The reason for such enhancement at the second harmonic may be the formation of counterstreaming electron beams. There are different opinions in the literature on whether the second harmonic electromagnetic emission in the presence of an additional beam can be efficient enough to markedly dominate emissions produced by a single beam. In the present paper, we carry out particle-in-cell simulations of the collision of two symmetric electron beams in plasma with open boundary conditions and show that the efficiency of beam-to-radiation power conversion can be significantly increased compared to models with periodic boundary conditions and reach the level of a few percent if three-wave interactions with electromagnetic waves near the second harmonic of the plasma frequency becomes available for the most unstable, oblique, beam-driven modes.
