We prove that for every polynomial of one complex variable of degree at least 2 and Julia set not being totally disconnected nor a circle, nor interval, Hausdorff dimension of this Julia set is larger than 1. Till now this was known only in the connected Julia set case. We give also an example of a polynomial with non-connected but not totally disconnected Julia set and such that all its components comprising of more than single points are analytic arcs, thus resolving a question by Christopher Bishop, who asked whether every such component must have Hausdorff dimension larger than 1., Comment: Abstract slightly reformulated

Suppose that $f$ is a transcendental entire function, $V \subsetneq \mathbb{C}$ is a simply connected domain, and $U$ is a connected component of $f^{-1}(V)$. Using Riemann maps, we associate the map $f \colon U \to V$ to an inner function $g \colon \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D}$. It is straightforward to see that $g$ is either a finite Blaschke product, or, with an appropriate normalisation, can be taken to be an infinite Blaschke product. We show that when the singular values of $f$ in $V$ lie away from the boundary, there is a strong relationship between singularities of $g$ and accesses to infinity in $U$. In the case where $U$ is a forward-invariant Fatou component of $f$, this leads to a very significant generalisation of earlier results on the number of singularities of the map $g$. If $U$ is a forward-invariant Fatou component of $f$ there are currently very few examples where the relationship between the pair $(f, U)$ and the function $g$ have been calculated. We study this relationship for several well-known families of transcendental entire functions. It is also natural to ask which finite Blaschke products can arise in this way, and we show the following: For every finite Blaschke product $g$ whose Julia set coincides with the unit circle, there exists a transcendental entire function $f$ with an invariant Fatou component such that $g$ is associated to $f$ in the above sense. Furthermore, there exists a single transcendental entire function $f$ with the property that any finite Blaschke product can be arbitrarily closely approximated by an inner function associated to the restriction of $f$ to a wandering domain., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures. An omitted value of a transcendental meromorphic function $f$ is called a Baker omitted value, in short \textit{bov} if there is a disk $D$ centered at the bov such that each component of the boundary of $f^{-1}(D)$ is bounded. Assuming that the bov is in the Fatou set of $f$, this article investigates the dynamics of the function. Firstly, the connectivity of all the Fatou components are determined. If $U$ is the Fatou component containing the bov then it is proved that a Fatou component $U'$ is infinitely connected if and only if it lands on $U$, i.e. $f^{k}(U') \subset U$ for some $k \geq 1$. Every other Fatou component is either simply connected or lands on a Herman ring. Further, assuming that the number of critical points in the Fatou set whose forward orbits do not intersect $U$ is finite, we have shown that the connectivity of each Fatou component belongs to a finite set. This set is independent of the Fatou components. It is proved that the Fatou component containing the bov is completely invariant whenever it is forward invariant. Further, if the invariant Fatou component is an attracting domain and compactly contains all the critical values of the function then the Julia set is totally disconnected. Baker domains are shown to be non-existent whenever the bov is in the Fatou set. It is also proved that, if there is a $2$-periodic Baker domain (these are not ruled out when the bov is in the Julia set), or a $2$-periodic attracting or parabolic domain containing the bov then the function has no Herman ring. Some examples exhibiting different possibilities for the Fatou set are discussed. We prove P. Alexandersson’s conjecture that for every complex polynomial p p of degree d ≥ 2 d \geq 2 the convex hull H p H_p of the Julia set J p J_p of p p satisfies p − 1 ( H p ) ⊂ H p p^{-1}(H_p) \subset H_p . We further prove that the equality p − 1 ( H p ) = H p p^{-1}(H_p) = H_p is achieved if and only if p p is affinely conjugated to the Chebyshev polynomial T d T_d of degree d d , to − T d -T_d , or to a monomial c z d c z^d with | c | = 1 |c|=1 .

For a sequence $(\lambda_n)$ of positive real numbers we consider the exponential functions $f_{\lambda_n} (z) = \lambda_n e^z$ and the compositions $F_n = f_{\lambda_n} \circ f_{\lambda_{n-1}} \circ ... \circ f_{\lambda_1}$. For such a non-autonomous family we can define the Fatou and Julia sets analogously to the usual case of autonomous iteration. The aim of this document is to study how the Julia set depends on the sequence $(\lambda_n)$. Among other results, we prove the Julia set for a random sequence $\{\lambda_n \}$, chosen uniformly from a neighbourhood of $\frac{1}{e}$, is the whole plane with probability $1$. We also prove the Julia set for $\frac{1}{e} + \frac{1}{n^p}$ is the whole plane for $p < \frac{1}{2}$, and give an example of a sequence $\{\lambda_n \} $ for which the iterates of $0$ converge to infinity starting from any index, but the Fatou set is non-empty.

Let P be a non-linear polynomial, K_P the filled Julia set of P, f a renormalization of P and K_f the filled Julia set of f. We show, loosely speaking, that there is a finite-to-one function \lambda from the set of P-external rays having limit points in K_f onto the set of f-external rays to K_f such that R and \lambda(R) share the same limit set. In particular, if a point of the Julia set J_f=\partial K_f of a renormalization is accessible from C\setminus K_f then it is accessible through an external ray of P (the inverse is obvious). Another interesting corollary is that: a component of K_P\setminus K_f can meet K_f only at a single (pre-)periodic point. We study also a correspondence induced by \lambda on arguments of rays. Julia and Mandelbrot sets, which characterize bounded orbits in dynamical systems over the complex numbers, are classic examples of fractal sets. We investigate the analogs of these sets for dynamical systems over the hyperbolic numbers. Hyperbolic numbers, which have the form $x+\tau y$ for $x,y \in \mathbb{R}$, and $\tau^2 = 1$ but $\tau \neq \pm 1$, are the natural number system in which to encode geometric properties of the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}$. We show that the hyperbolic analog of the Mandelbrot set parameterizes connectedness of hyperbolic Julia sets. We give a wall-and-chamber decomposition of the hyperbolic plane in terms of these Julia sets., Comment: 7 pages

Conditions are given which imply that certain non-autonomous analytic iterated function systems (NIFS's) in the complex plane have uniformly perfect attractor sets, while other conditions imply the attractor is pointwise thin, and thus hereditarily non uniformly perfect. Examples are given to illustrate the main theorems, as well as to indicate how they generalize other results. Examples are also given to illustrate how possible generalizations of corresponding results for autonomous IFS's do not hold in general in this more flexible setting. Further, applications to non-autonomous Julia sets are given. We construct a family of transcendental entire functions whose Julia sets have packing dimension in $(1,2)$. These are the first examples where the computed packing dimension is not $1$ or $2$. Our construction will allow us further show that the set of packing dimensions attained is dense in the interval $(1,2)$, and that the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets can be made arbitrarily close to the corresponding packing dimension., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures

Our main result states that, under an exponential map whose Julia set is the whole complex plane, on each piecewise smooth Jordan curve there is a point whose orbit is dense. Let $f$ and $g$ be two quasiregular maps in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that are of transcendental type and also satisfy $f\circ g =g \circ f$. We show that if the fast escaping sets of those functions are contained in their respective Julia sets then those two functions must have the same Julia set. We also obtain the same conclusion about commuting quasimeromorphic functions with infinite backward orbit of infinity. We study topological properties of the escaping endpoints and fast escaping endpoints of the Julia set of complex exponential $\exp(z)+a$ when $a\in (-\infty,-1)$. We show neither space is homeomorphic to the whole set of endpoints. This follows from a general result stating that for every transcendental entire function $f$, the escaping Julia set $I(f)\cap J(f)$ is first category., Comment: 4 pages

We prove that unicritical polynomials $f(z)=z^d+c$ which are semihyperbolic, i.e., for which the critical point $0$ is a non-recurrent point in the Julia set, are uniformly expanding on the Julia set with respect to the metric $\rho(z) |dz|$, where $\rho(z) = 1+\frac{1}{\textrm{dist}(z,P(f))^{1-1/d}}$, and where $P(f)$ is the postcritical set of $f$. We construct height functions defined stochastically on projective varieties equipped with endomorphisms, and we prove that these functions satisfy analogs of the usual properties of canonical heights. Moreover, we give a dynamical interpretation of the kernel of these stochastic height functions, and in the case of the projective line, we relate the size of this kernel to the Julia sets of the original maps. Finally, as an application, we establish the finiteness of some generalized Zsigmondy sets over global fields.

The Fatou-Julia theory for rational functions has been extended both to transcendental meromorphic functions and more recently to several different types of quasiregular mappings in higher dimensions. We extend the iterative theory to quasimeromorphic mappings with an essential singularity at infinity and at least one pole, constructing the Julia set for these maps. We show that this Julia set shares many properties with those for transcendental meromorphic functions and for quasiregular mappings of punctured space., Comment: 14 pages

There are several classes of transcendental entire functions for which the Julia set consists of an uncountable union of disjoint curves each of which joins a finite endpoint to infinity. Many authors have studied the topological properties of this set of finite endpoints. It was recently shown that, for certain functions in the exponential family, there is a strong dichotomy between the topological properties of the set of endpoints that escape and those of the set of endpoints that do not escape. In this paper, we show that this result holds for large families of functions in the Eremenko–Lyubich class. We also show that this dichotomy holds for a family of functions, outside that class, which includes the much-studied Fatou function defined by $$\begin{equation*}f(z):= z + 1+ e^{-z}.\end{equation*}$$Finally, we show how our results can be used to demonstrate that various sets are spiders’ webs, generalising results such as those in [9].

The Fatou-Julia decomposition is significant in the study of iterations of holomorphic mappings. Such a decomposition can be also considered for foliations in a unified manner. Although the decomposition will be fundamental in the study, it is not easy to decide the decomposition. In this article, we give a sufficient condition for open sets to be contained in Fatou sets. In this paper we study the sequence of orthonormal polynomials $\{P_n(\mu; z)\}$ defined by a probability measure $\mu$ with non-polar compact support $S(\mu)\subset\mathbb C$. We show that the support of any weak* limit of the sequence of measures of maximal entropy $\omega_n$ for $P_n$ is contained in the polynomial-convex hull of $S(\mu)$. And for $n$-th root regular measures the $\omega_n$ converge weak* to the equilibrium measure on $S(\mu)$., Comment: 8 pages

Using computer graphics and visualization algorithms, we extend in this work the results obtained analytically in [1], on the connectivity domains of alternated Julia sets, defined by switching the dynamics of two quadratic Julia sets. As proved in [1], the alternated Julia sets exhibit, as for polynomials of degree greater than two, the disconnectivity property in addition to the known dichotomy property (connectedness and totally disconnectedness) which characterizes the standard Julia sets. Via computer graphics, we unveil these connectivity domains which are four-dimensional fractals. The computer graphics results show here, without substituting the proof but serving as a research guide, that for the alternated Julia sets, the Mandelbrot set consists of the set of all parameter values, for which each alternated Julia set is not only connected, but also disconnected., Comment: 7 figures

If X X is the attractor set of a conformal IFS (iterated function system) in dimension two or three, we prove that there exists a quasiregular semigroup G G with a Julia set equal to X X . We also show that in dimension two, with a further assumption similar to the open set condition, the same result can be achieved with a semigroup generated by one element. Consequently, in this case the attractor set is quasiconformally equivalent to the Julia set of a rational map.

Hereditarily non uniformly perfect (HNUP) sets were introduced by Stankewitz, Sugawa, and Sumi in \cite{SSS} who gave several examples of such sets based on Cantor set-like constructions using nested intervals. We exhibit a class of examples in non-autonomous iteration where one considers compositions of polynomials from a sequence which is in general allowed to vary. In particular, we give a sharp criterion for when Julia sets from our class will be HNUP and we show that the maximum possible Hausdorff dimension of $1$ for these Julia sets can be attained. The proof of the latter considers the Julia set as the limit set of a non-autonomous conformal iterated function system and we calculate the Hausdorff dimension using a version of Bowen's formula given in the paper by Rempe-Gillen and Urb\'{a}nski \cite{RU}., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures To appear in Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems

We prove the existence of Cantor Julia sets with Hausdorff dimension two. In particular, such examples can be found in cubic polynomials. The proof is based on the characterization of the parameter spaces and dynamical planes of cubic polynomials by Branner–Hubbard and the parabolic bifurcation theory developed by Shishikura in the 1990s.

Rational semigroups were introduced by Hinkkanen and Martin as a generalization of the iteration of a single rational map. There has subsequently been much interest in the study of rational semigroups. Quasiregular semigroups were introduced shortly after rational semigroups as analogues in higher real dimensions, but have received far less attention. Each map in a quasiregular semigroup must necessarily be a uniformly quasiregular map. While there is a completely viable theory for the iteration of uniformly quasiregular maps, it is a highly non-trivial matter to construct them. In this paper, we study properties of the Julia and Fatou sets of quasiregular semigroups and, equally as importantly, give several families of examples illustrating some of the behaviours that can arise.

We study the removability of compact sets for continuous Sobolev functions. In particular, we focus on sets with infinitely many complementary components, called "detour sets", which resemble the Sierpi��ski gasket. The main theorem is that if $K\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a detour set and its complementary components are sufficiently regular, then $K$ is $W^{1,p}$-removable for $p>n$. Complex 1-variable polynomials with connected Julia sets and only repelling periodic points are called \emph{dendritic}. By results of Kiwi, any dendritic polynomial is semi-conjugate to a topological polynomial whose topological Julia set is a dendrite. We construct a continuous map of the space of all cubic dendritic polynomials onto a laminational model that is a quotient space of a subset of the closed bidisk. This construction generalizes the "pinched disk" model of the Mandelbrot set due to Douady and Thurston. A Peano continuum means a locally connected continuum. A compact metric space is called a \emph{Peano compactum} if all its components are Peano continua and if for any constant $C>0$ all but finitely many of its components are of diameter less than $C$. Given a compact set $K\subset\mathbb{C}$, there usually exist several upper semi-continuous decompositions of $K$ into subcontinua such that the quotient space, equipped with the quotient topology, is a Peano compactum. We prove that one of these decompositions is finer than all the others and call it the \emph{core decomposition of $K$ with Peano quotient}. This core decomposition gives rise to a metrizable quotient space, called the Peano model of $K$, which is shown to be determined by the topology of $K$ and hence independent of the embedding of $K$ into $\mathbb{C}$. We also construct a concrete continuum $K\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ such that the core decomposition of $K$ with Peano quotient does not exist. For specific choices of $K\subset\mathbb{C}$, the above mentioned core decomposition coincides with two models obtained recently, namely the locally connected model for unshielded planar continua (like connected Julia sets of polynomials) and the finitely Suslinian model for unshielded planar compact sets (like polynomial Julia sets that may not be connected). The study of such a core decomposition provides partial answers to several questions posed by Curry in 2010. These questions are motivated by other works, including those by Curry and his coauthors, that aim at understanding the dynamics of a rational map $f: \hat{\mathbb{C}}\rightarrow\hat{\mathbb{C}}$ restricted to its Julia set., 30 pages

We study the interplay between infinitesimal deformations of conformal mappings, quasiconformal distortion estimates and integral means spectra. By the work of McMullen, the second derivative of the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary of the image domain is naturally related to asymptotic variance of the Beurling transform. In view of a theorem of Smirnov which states that the dimension of a $k$-quasicircle is at most $1+k^2$, it is natural to expect that the maximum asymptotic variance $\Sigma^2 = 1$. In this paper, we prove $0.87913 \le \Sigma^2 \le 1$. For the lower bound, we give examples of polynomial Julia sets which are $k$-quasicircles with dimensions $1+ 0.87913 \, k^2$ for $k$ small, thereby showing that $\Sigma^2 \ge 0.87913$. The key ingredient in this construction is a good estimate for the distortion $k$, which is better than the one given by a straightforward use of the $\lambda$-lemma in the appropriate parameter space. Finally, we develop a new fractal approximation scheme for evaluating $\Sigma^2$ in terms of nearly circular polynomial Julia sets., Comment: 45 pages

Let $K$ be a complete, algebraically closed, non-Archimedean valued field, and let $\textbf{P}^1$ denote the Berkovich projective line over $K$. The Lyapunov exponent for a rational map $\phi\in K(z)$ of degree $d\geq 2$ measures the exponential rate of growth along a typical orbit of $\phi$. When $\phi$ is defined over $\mathbb{C}$, the Lyapunov exponent is bounded below by $\frac{1}{2}\log d$. In this article, we give a lower bound for $L(\phi)$ for maps $\phi$ defined over non-Archimedean fields $K$. The bound depends only on the degree $d$ and the Lipschitz constant of $\phi$. In the paper "Infinite Product Represenations for Kernels and Iterations of Functions", a technique was developed which allows for the construction of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space on basins of attraction containing $0$. When the right conditions are met, an explicit orthonormal basis can be constructed using a particular class of operators. It is natural then to consider how the orthonormal basis changes as we let the basin of attraction vary. We will consider this question for the basins of attraction containing $0$ of the family of polynomials $\mathcal{F} = \{az^{2^{n+2}}-2az^{2^{n+1}}:a\neq0\}$, where $n\in\mathbb{N}$., Comment: 7 pages

Brjuno and R��ssmann proved that every irrationally indifferent fixed point of an analytic function with a Brjuno rotation number is linearizable, and Yoccoz proved that this is sharp for quadratic polynomials. Douady conjectured that this is sharp for all rational functions of degree at least 2, i.e., that non-M��bius rational functions cannot have Siegel disks with non-Brjuno rotation numbers. We prove that Douady's conjecture holds for the class of polynomials for which the number of infinite tails of critical orbits in the Julia set equals the number of irrationally indifferent cycles. We prove the Dynamical Bogomolov Conjecture for endomorphisms of P^1\times P^1 defined over a number field. We use the equidistribution theorem for points of small height with respect to an algebraic dynamical system, combined with a theorem of Levin regarding symmetries of the Julia set. Let $\Lambda$ be the limit set of a conformal dynamical system, i.e. a Kleinian group acting on either finite- or infinite-dimensional real Hilbert space, a conformal iterated function system, or a rational function. We give an easily expressible sufficient condition, requiring that the limit set is not too much bigger than the radial limit set, for the following dichotomy: $\Lambda$ is either a real-analytic manifold or a fractal in the sense of Mandelbrot (i.e. its Hausdorff dimension is strictly greater than its topological dimension). Our primary focus is on the infinite-dimensional case. An important component of the strategy of our proof comes from the rectifiability techniques of Mayer and Urba\'nski ('03), who obtained a dimension rigidity result for conformal iterated function systems (including those with infinite alphabets). In order to handle the infinite dimensional case, both for Kleinian groups and for iterated function systems, we introduce the notion of pseudorectifiability, a variant of rectifiability, and develop a theory around this notion similar to the theory of rectifiable sets. Our approach also extends existing results in the finite-dimensional case, where it unifies the realms of Kleinian groups, conformal iterated function systems, and rational functions. For Kleinian groups, we improve on the rigidity result of Kapovich ('09) by substantially weakening its hypothesis of geometrical finiteness. Moreover, our proof, based on rectifiability, is entirely different than that of Kapovich, which depends on homological algebra. Another advantage of our approach is that it allows us to use the "demension" of \v{S}tan$'$ko ('69) as a substitute for topological dimension. For example, we prove that any dynamically defined version of Antoine's necklace must have Hausdorff dimension strictly greater than 1 (i.e. the demension of Antoine's necklace).

Given a rational map of the Riemann sphere and a subset $A$ of its Julia set, we study the $A$-exceptional set, that is, the set of points whose orbit does not accumulate at $A$. We prove that if the topological entropy of $A$ is less than the topological entropy of the full system then the $A$-exceptional set has full topological entropy. Furthermore, if the Hausdorff dimension of $A$ is smaller than the dynamical dimension of the system then the Hausdorff dimension of the $A$-exceptional set is larger than or equal to the dynamical dimension, with equality in the particular case when the dynamical dimension and the Hausdorff dimension coincide. We discuss also the case of a general conformal $C^{1+\alpha}$ dynamical system and, in particular, certain multimodal interval maps on their Julia set.

A model for the Mandelbrot set is due to Thurston and is stated in the language of geodesic laminations. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC conjecture stating that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected. For parameter spaces of higher degree polynomials, even conjectural models are missing, one possible reason being that the higher degree analog of the MLC conjecture is known to be false. We provide a combinatorial model for an essential part of the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, namely, for the space of all cubic polynomials with connected Julia sets all of whose cycles are repelling (we call such polynomials \emph{dendritic}). We prove that a Latt' es map admits an eventually simply-connected wandering continuum precisely when it is flexible. The simply-connected wandering continuum is a line segment in a bi-infinite geodesic under the flat metric.

We present the first example of a poly-time computable Julia set with a recurrent critical point: we prove that the Julia set of the Feigenbaum map is computable in polynomial time.

We study the different rates of escape of points under iteration by holomorphic self-maps of $\mathbb{C}^{\ast }=\mathbb{C}\setminus \{0\}$ for which both zero and infinity are essential singularities. Using annular covering lemmas we construct different types of orbits, including fast escaping and arbitrarily slowly escaping orbits to either zero, infinity or both. We also prove several properties about the set of fast escaping points for this class of functions. In particular, we show that there is an uncountable collection of disjoint sets of fast escaping points, each of which has $J(f)$ as its boundary.

We investigate the dynamics of $2$-generator semigroups of polynomials with bounded planar postcritical set and associated random dynamics on the Riemann sphere. Also, we investigate the space ${\cal B}$ of such semigroups. We show that for a parameter $h$ in the intersection of ${\cal B}$, the hyperbolicity locus ${\cal H}$ and the closure of the disconnectedness locus (the space of parameters for which the Julia set is disconnected), the corresponding semigroup satisfies either the open set condition (and the Bowen's formula) or that the Julia sets of the two generators coincide. Also, we show that for such a parameter $h$, if the Julia sets of the two generators do not coincide, then there exists a neighborhood $U$ of $h$ in the full parameter space ${\cal P}^{2}$ such that for each parameter in $U$, the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of the corresponding semigroup is strictly less than 2. Moreover, we show that the intersection of the connectedness locus and ${\cal B}\cap {\cal H}$ has dense interior. By using the results on the semigroups corresponding to these parameters, we investigate the associated functions which give the probability of tending to $\infty$ (complex analogues of the devil's staircase or Lebesgue's singular functions) and complex analogues of the Takagi function., Comment: Published in Adv. We show that an invariant Fatou component of a hyperbolic transcendental entire function is a bounded Jordan domain (in fact, a quasidisc) if and only if it contains only finitely many critical points and no asymptotic curves. We use this theorem to prove criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets for hyperbolic entire functions, and give examples that demonstrate that our results are optimal. We study the dynamics of an arbitrary semigroup of transcendental entire functions using Fatou-Julia theory. Several results of the dynamics associated with iteration of a transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroups. We provide some conditions for connectivity of the Julia set of the transcendental semigroups. Let $f$ be a rational map with degree at least two. We prove that $f$ has at least $2$ disjoint and infinite critical orbits in the Julia set if it has a Herman ring. This result is sharp in the following sense: there exists a cubic rational map having exactly two critical grand orbits but also having a Herman ring. In particular, $f$ has no Herman rings if it has at most one infinite critical orbit in the Julia set. We give three families of parabolic rational maps and show that every Cantor set of circles as the Julia set of a non-hyperbolic rational map must be quasisymmetrically equivalent to the Julia set of one map in these families for suitable parameters. Combining a result obtained before, we give a complete classification of the Cantor circles Julia sets in the sense of quasisymmetric equivalence.
