We use cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations and semi-analytical models to study the effects of primordial black holes (PBHs) on first star formation. Our models self-consistently combine two competing effects: initial (isocurvature) perturbations induced by PBHs and BH accretion feedback. Focusing on PBHs with masses $\sim 30\ \rm M_{\odot}$, we find that the standard picture of first star formation in molecular-cooling minihaloes is not changed by PBHs, as the simulated star-forming gas clouds in the central parsec are very similar to those in the $\rm \Lambda CDM$ case when PBHs make up $f_{\rm PBH}\sim 10^{-4}-0.1$ of dark matter. With a dynamical friction timescale of $\sim 2-10\ \rm Myr$ when the central gas density reaches $10^{5}\ \rm cm^{-3}$, it is also unlikely that PBHs can sink into star-forming discs and affect the evolution of protostars, although they may interact with the stars during the main-sequence stage. At larger scales, PBHs tend to shift star formation to more massive haloes, and accelerate structure formation. The latter effect is stronger in regions with higher initial overdensities. For $f_{\rm PBH}\sim 10^{-4}-0.01$ (allowed by observational constraints), the collapsed mass fraction of haloes hosting Population III stars is similar (within a factor of $\sim2$ at $z\lesssim 30$) to that in $\rm \Lambda CDM$, implying that the impact of stellar-mass PBHs on the cosmic star formation history at $z\gtrsim 10$ is small. We develop a method for implementing a proposal on utilizing knowledge of neutron star (NS) equation of state (EoS) for inferring the Hubble constant from a population of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. This method is useful in exploiting BNSs as standard sirens when their redshifts are not available. Gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact object binaries provide a direct measurement of their luminosity distances, but not their redshifts. Unlike in the past, here we employ a realistic EoS parametrization in a Bayesian framework to simultaneously measure the Hubble constant and refine the constraints on the EoS parameters. The uncertainty in the redshift depends on the uncertainties in the EoS and the mass parameters estimated from GW data. Combining the inferred BNS redshifts with the corresponding luminosity distances, one constructs a redshift-distance relation and deduces the Hubble constant from it. Here, we show that in the Cosmic Explorer era, one can measure the Hubble constant to a precision of $\lesssim 5\%$ (with a $90\%$ credible interval) with a realistic distribution of a thousand BNSs, while allowing for uncertainties in their EoS parameters. Such a measurement can potentially resolve the current tension in the measurements of the Hubble constant from the early- and late-time universe. The methodology implemented in this work demonstrates a comprehensive prescription for inferring the NS EoS and the Hubble constant by simultaneously combining GW observations from merging NSs, while employing a simple population model for NS masses and keeping the merger rate of NSs constant in redshift. The neutral atomic gas content of individual galaxies at large cosmological distances has until recently been difficult to measure due to the weakness of the hyperfine HI 21-cm transition. Here we estimate the HI gas mass of a sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 6.5 - 7.8$ surveyed for [CII]$-158\mu$m emission as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), using a recent calibration of the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor. We find that the HI gas mass excess in galaxies increases as a function of redshift, with an average of $M_{\rm HI} / M_\star \approx 10$, corresponding to HI gas mass fractions of $f_{\rm HI} = M_{\rm HI} / (M_\star + M_{\rm HI}) = 90\%$, at $z\approx 7$. Based on the [CII]-$158\mu$m luminosity function (LF) derived from the same sample of galaxies, we further place constraints on the cosmic HI gas mass density in galaxies ($\rho_{\rm HI}$) at this redshift, which we measure to be $\rho_{\rm HI} = 7.1^{+6.4}_{-3.0} \times 10^{6}\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$. This estimate is substantially lower by a factor of $\approx 10$ than that inferred from an extrapolation of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber (DLA) measurements, and largely depend on the exact [CII] LF adopted. However, we find this decrease in $\rho_{\rm HI}$ to be consistent with recent simulations and argue that this apparent discrepancy is likely a consequence of the DLA sightlines predominantly probing the substantial fraction of HI gas in high-$z$ galactic halos, whereas [CII] traces the HI in the ISM associated with star formation. We make predictions for this build-up of neutral gas in galaxies as a function of redshift, showing that at $z\gtrsim 5$ only $\approx 10\%$ of the cosmic HI gas content is confined in galaxies and associated with the star-forming ISM., Comment: The accepted version of the manuscript in press for ApJL

Limited constraints on the evolution of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction represent one of the primary uncertainties in the theoretical determination of the reionization history. Due to the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM), the possibility of observing LyC photons directly in the epoch of reionization is highly unlikely. For this reason, multiple indirect probes of LyC escape have been identified, some of which are used to identify low-redshift LyC leakers (e.g. O32), while others are primarily useful at $z>6$ (e.g. [OIII]/[CII] far infrared emission). The flux ratio of the resonant MgII doublet emission at 2796$\dot{\rm A}$ and 2803$\dot{\rm A}$ as well as the MgII optical depth have recently been proposed as ideal diagnostics of LyC leakage that can be employed at $z>6$ with JWST. Using state-of-the-art cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations post-processed with CLOUDY and resonant-line radiative transfer, we test whether MgII is indeed a useful probe of LyC leakage. Our simulations indicate that the majority of bright, star-forming galaxies with high LyC escape fractions are expected to be MgII emitters rather than absorbers at $z=6$. However, we find that the MgII doublet flux ratio is a more sensitive indicator of dust rather than neutral hydrogen, limiting its use as a LyC leakage indicator to only galaxies in the optically thin regime. In this paper, we propose a self-consistent test for a Hubble constant estimate using galaxy cluster and type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observations. The approach consists, in a first step, of obtaining the observational value of the galaxy cluster scaling-relation $Y_{SZE}D_{A}^{2}/C_{XSZ}Y_X = C $ by combining the X-Ray and SZ observations of galaxy clusters at low redshifts ($z < 0.1$) from the first {\it Planck mission} all-sky data set ($0.044 \leq z \leq 0.444$), along with SNe Ia observations and making use of the cosmic distance duality relation validity. Then, by considering a flat $\Lambda$CDM model for $D_A$, the constant $C$ from the first step and the Planck prior on $\Omega_M$ parameter, we obtain $H_0$ by using the galaxy cluster data with $z>0.1$. As a result, we obtain $H_0 = 73.014^{+7.435}_{-6.688}$ km/s/Mpc, which represents $9.7\%$ accuracy measurement on the Hubble constant.. We use network theory to study hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos, the building blocks of cosmic structure. We analyze cosmological simulations of structure formation, which are publicly available, and construct tree graphs for individual main halo systems by connecting their associated subhalos. These graphs exhibit a power-law degree distribution with an exponent of $-2$. We propose a growing graph model based on preferential attachment to realize the power-law distribution exhibited in the simulations. The attachment kernel effectively incorporates effects of minor mergers, major mergers and tidal stripping. The model reproduces many important features of the simulated halos, including the subhalo abundance and the hierarchical clustering. Optical clusters identified from red-sequence galaxies suffer from projection effects, where interloper galaxies along the line-of-sight to a cluster are mistaken as genuine members of the cluster. In the previous study (Sunayama et al. 2020), we found that the projection effects cause the boost on the amplitudes of clustering and lensing on large scale compared to the expected amplitudes in the absence of any projection effects. These boosts are caused by preferential selections of filamentary structure aligned to the line-of-sight due to distance uncertainties in photometric surveys. We model the projection effects with two simple assumptions and develop a novel method to quantify the size of the boost using cluster-galaxy cross-correlation functions. We validate our method using mock cluster catalogs built from cosmological N-body simulations and find that we can obtain unbiased constraints on the boost parameter with our model. We then apply our analysis on the SDSS redMaPPer clusters and find that the size of the boost is roughly 20% for all the richness bins except the cluster sample with the richness bin $\lambda \in [30,40]$. Context: Population III (Pop III) stars may be fast rotating. An expected consequence of fast rotation is strong internal mixing that deeply affects their evolutionary tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and hence their ionising power. aims: We investigate the impact on the ionising power of Pop III stars in an extreme case of internal mixing, the one leading to chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE). In that situation, during the main sequence phase, the star keeps the same chemical composition from its center to its surface. Homogeneous stars have larger effective temperatures and luminosities than stars evolving non-homogeneously and thus are stronger ionising sources. Methods: The stellar evolution models are based on $n=3$ polytropes with a time varying hydrogen mass fraction. The ionisation model employs the self-similar champagne flow solution from Shu et al. (2002), as well as numerical simulations for the stochastic treatment of star clusters over a grid of redshifts and halo masses. Results: We find that haloes containing chemically homogeneous stars have an escape fraction of ionising photons about twice that of haloes containing classical Pop III stars. By extrapolating the high-$z$ ionisation history powered by Pop III stars (at $z\gtrsim 15$) to the post-reionisation epoch, we derive the Thomson scattering optical depth $\tau$, which is compared with the value measured by $\textit{Planck}$. We find that $\tau$ is overproduced by $\sim1.5- 5\sigma$, when all Pop III stars evolve homogeneously. This indicates that CHE is unlikely to be realised in the majority of Pop III stars, although the present study cannot exclude that a fraction of them undergoes CHE. Beginning with cosmological initial conditions at z=100, we simulate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation of Population III stars and compare our results with the predictions of Paper I. We use Gadget-2 to follow the evolution of the system while the field is weak. We introduce a new method for treating kinematic fields by tracking the evolution of the deformation tensor. The growth rate in this stage of the simulation is lower than expected for diffuse astrophysical plasmas, which have a very low resistivity (high magnetic Prandtl number); we attribute this to the large numerical resistivity in simulations, corresponding to a magnetic Prandtl number of order unity. When the magnetic field begins to be dynamically significant in the core of the minihalo at z=27, we map it onto a uniform grid and follow the evolution in an adaptive mesh refinement, MHD simulation in Orion2. The nonlinear evolution of the field in the Orion2 simulation violates flux-freezing and is consistent with the theory proposed by Xu & Lazarian. The fields approach equipartition with kinetic energy at densities ~ 10^10 - 10^12 cm^-3. When the same calculation is carried out in Orion2 with no magnetic fields, several protostars form, ranging in mass from ~ 1 to 30 M_sol with magnetic fields, only a single ~ 30 M_sol protostar forms by the end of the simulation. Galaxies and their dark-matter halos have posed several challenges to the Dark Energy plus Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) cosmological model. These discrepancies between observations and theory intensify for the lowest-mass (`dwarf') galaxies. LCDM predictions for the number, spatial distribution, and internal structure of low-mass dark-matter halos have historically been at odds with observed dwarf galaxies, but this is partially expected, because many predictions modeled only the dark-matter component. Any robust LCDM prediction must include, hand-in-hand, a model for galaxy formation to understand how baryonic matter populates and affects dark-matter halos. In this article, we review the most notable challenges to LCDM regarding dwarf galaxies, and we discuss how recent cosmological numerical simulations have pinpointed baryonic solutions to these challenges. We identify remaining tensions, including the diversity of the inner dark-matter content, planes of satellites, stellar morphologies, and star-formation quenching. The homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model in the Weyl conformal geometry is considered. We showed that, despite the conformal invariance, the dust matter is allowed in such a universe. The ultra-diffuse galaxies DF2 and DF4 in the NGC1052 group share several unusual properties: they both have large sizes, rich populations of overluminous and large globular clusters, and very low velocity dispersions indicating little or no dark matter. It has been suggested that these galaxies were formed in the aftermath of high velocity encounters of gas rich galaxies, events that resemble the collision that created the bullet cluster but on much smaller scales. The gas separates from the dark matter in the collision and subsequent star formation leads to the formation of one or more dark matter-free galaxies. Here we show that the present-day line-of-sight distances and radial velocities of DF2 and DF4 are consistent with their joint formation in the aftermath of a single bullet-dwarf collision, around eight billion years ago. Moreover, we find that DF2 and DF4 are part of an apparent linear substructure of 7-11 large, low-luminosity objects. We propose that these all originated in the same event, forming a trail of dark matter-free galaxies that is more than 2 Mpc long and angled 7 +- 2 degrees from the line of sight. We report on a LUCI/Large Binocular Telescope near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of PSO J030947.49+271757.31 (hereafter PSO J0309+27), the highest redshift blazar known to date (z$\sim$6.1). From the C$\rm IV$$\lambda$1549 broad emission line we found that PSO J0309+27 is powered by a 1.45$^{+1.89}_{-0.85}$$\times$10$^9$M$_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a bolometric luminosity of $\sim$8$\times$10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and an Eddington ratio equal to 0.44$^{+0.78}_{-0.35}$. We also obtained new photometric observations with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo in J and K bands to better constrain the NIR Spectral Energy Distribution of the source. Thanks to these observations, we were able to model the accretion disk and to derive an independent estimate of the black hole mass of PSO J0309+27, confirming the value inferred from the virial technique. The existence of such a massive SMBH just $\sim$900 million years after the Big Bang challenges models of the earliest SMBH growth, especially if jetted Active Galactic Nuclei are associated to a highly spinning black hole as currently thought. Indeed, in a Eddington-limited accretion scenario and assuming a radiative efficiency of 0.3, typical of a fast rotating SMBH, a seed black hole of more than 10$^6$ M$_{\odot}$ at z = 30 is required to reproduce the mass of PSO J0309+27 at redshift 6. This requirement suggests either earlier periods of rapid black hole growth with super-Eddington accretion and/or that only part of the released gravitational energy goes to heat the accretion disk and feed the black hole., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; Accepted to publication in A&A

In the context of cosmic microwave background polarization studies and the characterization of the Galactic foregrounds, the power spectrum analysis of the thermal dust polarization sky has led to intriguing evidence of an E/B asymmetry and a positive TE correlation. In this work, we produce synthesized dust polarization maps from a set of global magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of Milky-Way-sized galaxies, and analyze their power spectra at intermediate angular scales (angular multipoles $\ell \in \left[60 ,\, 140\right]$). We study the role of the initial configuration of the large-scale magnetic field, its strength, and the feedback on the power spectrum characteristics. Using full-galaxy MHD simulations, we were able to estimate the variance induced by the peculiar location of the observer in the galaxy. We find that the polarization power spectra sensitively depend on the observer's location, impeding a distinction between different simulation setups. There is a clear statistical difference between the power spectra measured from within the spiral arms and those measured from the inter-arm regions. Also, power spectra from within supernova-driven bubbles share common characteristics, regardless of the underlying model. However, no correlation was found between the properties of the polarization power spectra and the local (with respect to the observer) mean values of physical quantities such as the density and the strength of the magnetic field. Finally, we find indications that the global strength of the magnetic field may play a role in shaping the power spectrum characteristics; as the global magnetic field strength increases, the E/B asymmetry and the TE correlation increase, whereas the viewpoint-induced variance decreases. Exploiting the fundamentally achromatic nature of gravitational lensing, we present a lens model for the massive galaxy cluster SMACSJ0723.3-7323 (SMACSJ0723, z=0.388) that significantly improves upon earlier work. Building on strong-lensing constraints identified in prior Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations, the mass model utilizes 21 multiple-image systems, 17 of which were newly discovered in Early Release Observation (ERO) data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The resulting lens model maps the cluster mass distribution to an RMS spatial precision of 0.32'' and is publicly available. Consistent with previous analyses, our study shows SMACSJ0723.3-7323 to be well described by a single large-scale component centered on the location of the brightest cluster galaxy. However, satisfying all lensing constraints provided by the JWST data, the model point to the need for the inclusion of an additional, diffuse component west of the cluster. A comparison of the galaxy, mass, and gas distributions in the core of SMACSJ0723 based on HST, JWST, and Chandra data reveals a concentrated regular elliptical profile along with tell-tale signs of a recent merger, possibly proceeding almost along our line of sight. The exquisite sensitivity of JWST's NIRCAM reveals in spectacular fashion both the extended intra-cluster-light distribution and numerous star-forming clumps in magnified background galaxies. Strongly lensed systems are powerful probes of the distribution of dark matter on small scales. In this paper, we show that line-of-sight haloes between the source and the observers give rise to a distinct anisotropic signature in the two-point function of the effective lensing deflection field. We show in particular that the non-linear coupling between line-of-sight haloes and the main-lens plane imprints a characteristic quadrupole moment on this two-point function whose amplitude reflects the abundance of such haloes within the strongly lensed field. We discuss how, by taking ratios of different multipole moments, such observables could be made robust under the mass-sheet transform. We also demonstrate that future extremely large telescopes have the ability to detect the quadrupole moment due to this unique anisotropic signature under ideal conditions. Our approach opens the door to statistically distinguish the effect of line-of-sight haloes from that of the main-lens substructure on lensed images, hence allowing one to probe dark matter physics in a new way., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures + appendices. The case of SN Ia Hubble diagrams from photometrically selected samples using photometric SN host galaxy redshifts is investigated. The host redshift uncertainties and the contamination by core collapse SNe are addressed. As a test, we use the 3-year photometric SN Ia sample of the SuperNova Legacy Survey (SNLS), made of 437 objects between 0.1 and 1.05 in redshift. We combine this sample with non-SNLS objects of the JLA spectroscopic sample, made of 501 objects mostly below 0.4 in redshift. We study two options for the origin of the redshifts of the photometric sample, either provided entirely from the host photometric redshift catalogue or a mixed origin where 75% of the sample can be assigned spectroscopic redshifts. Using light curve simulations subject to the same photometric selection as data, we study the impact of photometric redshift uncertainties and contamination on flat $\Lambda CDM$ fits to Hubble diagrams from such combined samples. We find that photometric redshifts and contamination lead to biased cosmological parameters. The magnitude of the bias is similar for both redshift options. This bias can be largely accounted for if photometric redshift uncertainties and contamination are taken into account when computing the SN magnitude bias correction due to selection effects. To reduce the cosmological bias further, we explore two methods to propagate redshift uncertainties into the cosmological likelihood computation, either by refitting photometric redshifts with cosmology or by sampling the redshift resolution function. Redshift refitting fails at correcting the cosmological bias whatever the redshift option, while sampling slightly reduces it in both cases. For actual data, we find compatible results with the JLA ones for mixed photometric and spectroscopic redshifts, while the full photometric option is biased but consistent with JLA when all uncertainties are included., Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures

Powerful winds with wide opening angles, likely driven by accretion disks around black holes (BHs), are observed in the majority of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and can play a crucial role in AGN and galaxy evolution. If protons are accelerated in the wind near the BH via diffusive shock acceleration, $p\gamma$ processes with AGN photons generate neutrinos as well as pair cascade emission from the gamma-ray to radio bands. The TeV neutrinos detected by IceCube from the obscured Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 can be interpreted consistently if the shock velocity is appreciably lower than the local escape velocity, which may correspond to a failed, line-driven wind that is physically well motivated. Although the $p\gamma$-induced cascade is $\gamma\gamma$-attenuated above a few MeV, it can still contribute significantly to the sub-GeV gamma rays observed from NGC 1068. At higher energies, gamma rays can arise via $pp$ processes from a shock where an outgoing wind impacts the obscuring torus, along with some observable radio emission. Tests and implications of this model are discussed. We present the first joint analysis of catalogs of radio galaxies and quasars to determine if their sky distribution is consistent with the standard $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology. This model is based on the cosmological principle, which asserts that the universe is statistically isotropic and homogeneous on large scales, so the observed dipole anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) must be attributed to our local peculiar motion. We test the null hypothesis that there is a dipole anisotropy in the sky distribution of radio galaxies and quasars consistent with the motion inferred from the CMB, as is expected for cosmologically distant sources. Our two samples, constructed respectively from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, are systematically independent and have no shared objects. Using a completely general statistic that accounts for correlation between the found dipole amplitude and its directional offset from the CMB dipole, the null hypothesis is independently rejected by the radio galaxy and quasar samples with $p$-value of $8.9\times10^{-3}$ and $1.2\times10^{-5}$, respectively, corresponding to $2.6\sigma$ and $4.4\sigma$ significance. The joint significance, using sample size-weighted $Z$-scores, is $5.1\sigma$. We show that the radio galaxy and quasar dipoles are consistent with each other and find no evidence for any frequency dependence of the amplitude. The consistency of the two dipoles improves if we boost to the CMB frame assuming its dipole to be fully kinematic, suggesting that cosmologically distant radio galaxies and quasars may have an intrinsic anisotropy in this frame., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. The 21cm line refers to a forbidden transition in neutral hydrogen associated with alignment of spins of the proton and electron. It is a very low energy transition that is emitted whenever there is neutral hydrogen in the Universe. Since baryons are mostly (~75%) hydrogen, one can in principle detect this emission throughout much of the history of the Universe. The dominant emission mechanism is different across cosmic ages. Before the photons decouple from matter, hydrogen is in an ionized state and does not emit in 21cm. After recombination and during the Dark Ages, at z ~ 30-1000, the 21cm emission is associated with density fluctuations in the neutral hydrogen medium. After the first stars turn on and galaxies begin to form, the 21cm emission traces bubbles of ionized hydrogen in the sea of the neutral medium. This epoch, spanning z ~ 6-30, is often referred to as cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Characterizing accurately the polarized dust emission from our Galaxy will be decisive for the quest for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) primordial $B$-modes. The incomplete modeling of its potentially complex spectral properties could lead to biases in the CMB polarization analyses and to a spurious detection of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. Variations of the dust properties along and between lines of sight lead to unavoidable distortions of the spectral energy distribution (SED) that can not be easily anticipated by standard component separation methods. This issue can be tackled using a moment expansion of the dust SED, an innovative parametrization method imposing minimal assumptions on the sky complexity. In the recent work [Vacher \emph{et al.} (2022)]\cite{Vacher_2022}, we apply this formalism to the $B$-mode cross-angular power spectra computed from simulated \lb{} polarization data at frequencies between 100 and 402\,GHz, containing CMB, dust and instrumental noise. Thanks to the moment expansion, we can measure an unbiased value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio with a dispersion compatible with the target values aimed by the instrument.

We present a classification algorithm based on the Random Forest machine learning model that differentiates galaxies into orbiting, infalling and background (interloper) populations, using phase space information as input. We train and test our model with the galaxies from UniverseMachine mock catalog based on Multi-Dark Planck 2 N-body simulations. We introduce the Ultramarine simulation, an extremely large $N$-body simulation of the structure formation and evolution to redshift 5.5 at which cosmic reionization was just completed. The simulation evolves 2.1 trillion particles within a $512~h^{-1}$Mpc cube and has an unprecedented mass and force resolution for large volume simulations of this kind, $5.6\times 10^6 h^{-1}$M$_\odot$ and $1.2~h^{-1}$kpc, respectively. We present some basic statistical results of the simulation, including the halo mass function, halo bias parameter as well as halo mass-concentration relation at high redshifts, and compare them with some existing representative models. We find excellent agreement with some models on the high redshift halo mass functions, but neither the halo bias factor nor halo mass-concentration relation. All halo bias models for comparison over-predicate high redshift halo bias by large factors, an accurate fit to our simulation is given. High redshift dark matter haloes still can be reasonably described with NFW model, the halo mass-concentration relations are monotonic, with more massive haloes having lower concentration, in disfavor of the upturn feature reported by some studies. The mass concentration relation has little evolution between $z=5.5$ to $z=10$, in contrast to strong evolution predicted by most existing models. We study the Jeans-type gravitational instability for a self-gravitating medium composed of two species, baryonic (bright) and dark matter particles, using a hybrid quantum-classical fluid approach. Baryonic matter is treated classically, which is appropriate for most astrophysical environments, e.g., Bok globules, while dark matter is treated through a quantum hydrodynamic approach allowing for possible nonlinearities. These nonlinearities may arise in bosonic dark matter due to attractive or repulsive short-range self-interaction (attractive interaction being more relevant for axions) or from the Pauli exclusion principle for fermionic dark matter, e.g., massive neutrinos. This allows us to explore, in a very broad context, the impact of a dark matter background on the Jeans process for different scenarios discussed in the literature. In the simplest case, it is shown that the effect of a dark matter background on the Jeans mass depends only on the ratio of densities and velocity dispersions of baryonic and dark matter particles. Taking advantage of that, we confront the established stability criterion with Bok globule stability observations and show that the model adequately accounts for the data with dark matter parameters close to those predicted independently from numerical simulations.

The predicted size of dark matter substructures in kilo-parsec scales is model-dependent. Therefore, if the correlations between dark matter mass densities as a function of the distances between them are measured via observations, we can scrutinize dark matter scenarios. In this paper, we present an assessment procedure of dark matter scenarios. First, we use Gaia's data to infer the single-body phase-space density of the stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The latter, together with the Jeans equation, after eliminating the gravitational potential using the Poisson equation, reveals the mass density of dark matter as a function of its position in the galaxy. We derive the correlations between dark matter mass densities as a function of distances between them. No statistically significant correlation is observed. Second, for the sake of comparison with the standard cold dark matter, we also compute the correlations between dark matter mass densities in a small halo of the Eagle hydrodynamics simulation. We show that the correlations from the simulation and from Gaia are in agreement. Third, we show that Gaia observations can be used to limit the parameter space of the Ginzburg--Landau statistical field theory of dark matter mass densities and subsequently shrink the parameter space of any dark matter model. Recent works have shown that the properties of galaxy populations in dark matter halos vary with large-scale environments. These results suggest a variation in the halo occupation distribution (HOD) in extreme density environments. To analyse these effects, we identify cosmic voids and future virialised structures (FVS) in the SDSS-DR12 and estimate the HOD within these superstructures using group catalogues as dark matter halo proxies. Our goal is to use observational galaxy data to characterise the HOD within voids and FVS, explore the different properties of these galaxies populations and compare them with the general results outside these superstructures. Using a galaxy group catalogue we compute the HOD within both types of superstructures. We also study the dependence on the results on the main void and FVS properties. We also analysed the mean stellar age of the galaxies inside these regions. In all cases, we compare the results with those derived from the Field sample. Inside voids, we find a strong decrease in HOD concerning the Field results. The mean number of satellites fall to 50%. Inside FVS, the HOD shows a significant increase to the Field, with a 40% excess in the mean number of satellites. In both regions, the differences with respect to the Field increases for the extreme values of the density environments. We obtain no signs of variations related to intrinsic characteristics of voids and FVS. We find that the cumulative distribution of the mean age of stars of the central galaxy also varies in these regions. Finally, we explore the HOD for the 25% youngest (oldest) galaxies. We find that for the low-mass groups the youngest galaxies are only present inside voids. On the other hand, for the high-mass groups the FVS environments show the same increase in the HOD concerning the Field. Context. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archives constitute a rich dataset of high-resolution images to mine for strong gravitational lenses. While many HST programmes specifically target strong lenses, they can also be present by coincidence in other HST observations. Aims. Our aim is to identify non-Targeted strong gravitational lenses, without any prior selection on the lens properties, in almost two decades of images from the ESA HST archive (eHST). Methods. We used crowdsourcing on the Hubble Asteroid Hunter (HAH) citizen science project to identify strong lenses, along with asteroid trails, in publicly available large field-of-view HST images. We visually inspected 2354 objects tagged by citizen scientists as strong lenses to clean the sample and identify the genuine lenses. Results. We report the detection of 252 strong gravitational lens candidates, which were not the primary targets of the HST observations. A total of 198 of them are new, not previously reported by other studies, consisting of 45 A grades, 74 B grades and 79 C grades. The majority are galaxy-galaxy configurations. The newly detected lenses are, on average, 1.3 magnitudes fainter than previous HST searches. This sample of strong lenses with high-resolution HST imaging is ideal to follow up with spectroscopy for lens modelling and scientific analyses. Conclusions. This paper presents the unbiased search of lenses that enabled us to find a wide variety of lens configurations, including exotic lenses. We demonstrate the power of crowdsourcing in visually identifying strong lenses and the benefits of exploring large archival datasets. Galaxy photometric redshift (photo-$z$) is crucial in cosmological studies, such as weak gravitational lensing and galaxy angular clustering measurements. In this work, we try to extract photo-$z$ information and construct its probability distribution function (PDF) using the Bayesian neural networks (BNN) from both galaxy flux and image data expected to be obtained by the China Space Station Telescope (CSST). The mock galaxy images are generated from the Advanced Camera for Surveys of Hubble Space Telescope ($HST$-ACS) and COSMOS catalog, in which the CSST instrumental effects are carefully considered. And the galaxy flux data are measured from galaxy images using aperture photometry. We construct Bayesian multilayer perceptron (B-MLP) and Bayesian convolutional neural network (B-CNN) to predict photo-$z$ along with the PDFs from fluxes and images, respectively. We combine the B-MLP and B-CNN together, and construct a hybrid network and employ the transfer learning techniques to investigate the improvement of including both flux and image data. For galaxy samples with SNR$>$10 in $g$ or $i$ band, we find the accuracy and outlier fraction of photo-$z$ can achieve $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.022$ and $\eta=2.35\%$ for the B-MLP using flux data only, and $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.022$ and $\eta=1.32\%$ for the B-CNN using image data only. The Bayesian hybrid network can achieve $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.021$ and $\eta=1.23\%$, and utilizing transfer learning technique can improve results to $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.019$ and $\eta=1.17\%$, which can provide the most confident predictions with the lowest average uncertainty., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in RAA

The epoch of reionization (EoR) offers a unique window into the dawn of galaxy formation, through which high-redshift galaxies can be studied by observations of both themselves and their impact on the intergalactic medium. Line intensity mapping (LIM) promises to explore cosmic reionization and its driving sources by measuring intensity fluctuations of emission lines tracing the cosmic gas in varying phases. Using LIMFAST, a novel semi-numerical tool designed to self-consistently simulate LIM signals of multiple EoR probes, we investigate how building blocks of galaxy formation and evolution theory, such as feedback-regulated star formation and chemical enrichment, might be studied with multi-tracer LIM during the EoR. On galaxy scales, we show that the star formation law and the feedback associated with star formation can be indicated by both the shape and redshift evolution of LIM power spectra. For a baseline model of metal production that traces star formation, we find that lines highly sensitive to metallicity are generally better probes of galaxy formation models. On larger scales, we demonstrate that inferring ionized bubble sizes from cross-correlations between tracers of ionized and neutral gas requires a detailed understanding of the astrophysics that shape the line luminosity--halo mass relation. Despite various modeling and observational challenges, wide-area, multi-tracer LIM surveys will provide important high-redshift tests for the fundamentals of galaxy formation theory, especially the interplay between star formation and feedback by accessing statistically the entire low-mass population of galaxies as ideal laboratories, complementary to upcoming surveys of individual sources by new-generation telescopes., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures; to appear in ApJ

The evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) is widely used to assess the performance of numerical methods. We employ this instability to test both the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and the meshless finite mass (MFM) implementation in OpenGadget3. We quantify the accuracy of SPH and MFM in reproducing the linear growth of the KHI with different numerical and physical set-ups. Among them, we consider: $i)$ numerical induced viscosity, and $ii)$ physically motivated, Braginskii viscosity, and compare their effect on the growth of the KHI. We find that the changes of the inferred numerical viscosity when varying nuisance parameters such as the set-up or the number of neighbours in our SPH code are comparable to the differences obtained when using different hydrodynamical solvers, i.e. MFM. SPH reproduces the expected reduction of the growth rate in the presence of physical viscosity and recovers well the threshold level of physical viscosity needed to fully suppress the instability. In the case of galaxy clusters with a virial temperature of $3\times10^7$ K, this level corresponds to a suppression factor of $\approx10^{-3}$ of the classical Braginskii value. The intrinsic, numerical viscosity of our SPH implementation in such an environment is inferred to be at least an order of magnitude smaller (i.e. $\approx10^ {-4}$), re-ensuring that modern SPH methods are suitable to study the effect of physical viscosity in galaxy clusters., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We use weak lensing observations to make the first measurement of the characteristic depletion radius, one of the three radii that characterize the region where matter is being depleted by growing haloes. The lenses are taken from the halo catalog produced by the extended halo-based group/cluster finder applied to DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys DR9, while the sources are extracted from the DECaLS DR8 imaging data with the Fourier_Quad pipeline. We study halo masses $12 < \log ( M_{\rm grp} ~[{\rm M_{\odot}}/h] ) \leq 15.3$ within redshifts $0.2 \leq z \leq 0.3$. The virial and splashback radii are also measured and used to test the original findings on the depletion region. When binning haloes by mass, we find consistency between most of our measurements and predictions from the CosmicGrowth simulation, with exceptions to the lowest mass bins. The characteristic depletion radius is found to be roughly $2.5$ times the virial radius and $1.7 - 3$ times the splashback radius, in line with an approximately universal outer density profile, and the average enclosed density within the characteristic depletion radius is found to be roughly $29$ times the mean matter density of the Universe in our sample. When binning haloes by both mass and a proxy for halo concentration, we do not detect a significant variation of the depletion radius with concentration, on which the simulation prediction is also sensitive to the choice of concentration proxy. We discuss the secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy due to kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from ionized bubbles around individual quasars prior to the reionization of the Universe. The bubbles create local ionization modulations which move with the large scale structure linear bulk flow and act as sources for kSZ. We improve upon previous calculations of this effect, using a halo model based description of quasar abundance, and find that the kSZ distortion power spectrum, $C_\ell$, from the bubbles to be sub-dominant to kSZ from patchy reionization driven by galaxies. However, the shape of the two $C_\ell$'s are very different with the quasar bubble $C_\ell$ having a peak at $\ell \approx 500-700$ whereas the $C_\ell$ due to patchy reionization flattening out at $\ell > 1000$ thus making it plausible to separate the two using $C_\ell$ template-fitting in a future survey like CMB-HD. Next, we look at the imprint of a single quasar bubble on the CMB and show that it can be detected in a high-resolution, ambitious effort like CMB-HD. A detection of a high redshift quasar bubble in the CMB would carry complimentary information to its detection in HI or Lyman-$\alpha$ and a joint analysis can be used to break parameter degeneracies., Comment: Updated to match the published version

We illustrate a novel signature of black hole binaries from their effect on the kinematics of water maser emission in their environments. With the help of simulations, we establish the condition for clumps to mase based on their coherence lengths calibrated to those of the known maser galaxy NGC 4258. This is then used to identify masing clumps around a binary black hole system, and quantify the kinematic and spectral differences relative to the single black hole case. For some generic circumstances, blue-shifted masers around a binary black hole are found to preferentially follow the Keplerian rotation curve observed in the single black hole case. The redshifted ones, however, are found to visibly deviate from this relation, and also display more scatter with a tendency towards lower absolute values of the velocity along the line-of-sight. The spectrum of the masers as a function of line-of-sight velocity also shows a double peaked structure, reminiscent of recent observations of systems such as Mrk 1. Observable thermodynamical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) reflect the complex interplay between AGN feedback and the gravitational collapse of haloes. Using the large volume TNG300 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project we provide predictions for X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) scaling relations for a sample of over 30,000 haloes that cover a wide mass range from galaxies to massive galaxy clusters ($M_{\rm 500crit}$ $\in [10^{12}$ M$_{\odot} - 2\times 10^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$]). We produce mock X-ray observations of simulated haloes using methods that are consistent with observational techniques. Thus, we investigate the scaling relations between the soft-band X-ray luminosity, spectroscopic temperature, gas mass fraction, $Y_{\rm X}$ and $Y_{\rm SZ}$ as a function of halo mass, and we find broad agreement between IllustrisTNG and the observed relations. Our results highlight the scatter and bias introduced by estimated masses, and thus the importance of converting simulated ICM properties to the observable space when comparing simulations to current X-ray observations. The wide range of halo masses in our sample provides new insights into the shape of the X-ray and SZ scaling relations across three orders of magnitude in mass. Our findings show strong evidence for a break in $z=0$ scaling relations. We introduce a smoothly broken power law model which robustly captures the location of this break, the width of the transition region around the break, as well as the slope dependence on halo mass. Abell 1351 is a massive merging cluster that hosts a giant radio halo and a bright radio edge blended in the halo. In this paper, we present the first ever spectral analysis of this cluster using GMRT 610 MHz and VLA 1.4 GHz archival data and discuss the radio edge property. Using \textit{Chandra} data, we report the first tentative detection of shock front at the location of the edge in A1351 with discontinuities in both X-ray surface brightness and temperature. Our analysis strengthens the previous claim of the detected "edge" being a high luminosity radio relic. The radio relic has an integrated spectral index $\alpha = -1.63 \pm 0.33$ and radio power $P_{1.4 \mathrm{\ GHz}} = 4.46 \pm 0.61\times10^{24}$ W $Hz^{-1}$ with a largest Linear Size (LLS) of 570 kpc. The radio spectral index map shows steepening in the shock downstream region. Our analysis favours the scenario where the Diffusive Shock Acceleration (DSA) of particles is responsible for the origin of the radio relic in the presence of strong magnetic field. Low metallicity stars give rise to unique spectacular transients and are of immense interest for understanding stellar evolution. Their importance has only grown further with the recent detections of mergers of stellar mass black holes that likely originate mainly from low metallicity progenitor systems. Moreover, the formation of low metallicity stars is intricately linked to galaxy evolution, in particular to early enrichment and to later accretion and mixing of lower metallicity gas. Because low metallicity stars are difficult to observe directly, cosmological simulations are crucial for understanding their formation. Here we quantify the rates and locations of low metallicity star formation using the high-resolution TNG50 magnetohydrodynamical cosmological simulation, and we examine where low metallicity stars end up at $z=0$. Odd Radio Circles or ORCs are recently discovered edge-brightened, low surface brightness circular radio sources. The progenitors and astrophysical processes responsible for their origins are presently debated. Some ORCs are host-less and some appear to be hosted in distant quiescent galaxies. Two plausible explanations consider ORCs as nearby supernova remnants with sizes a few hundred parsec in the intragroup medium of the local group of galaxies or alternatively shocked halos of a few hundred kpc extent around distant galaxies. The input shock energy required to create ORCs of a few hundred kpc size is estimated in a range of $10^{55} - 10^{59}$ erg. It is shown here that the cumulative energy in unbound debris ejected from multiple ($10^{5} - 10^{9}$) tidal disruption events over $\sim100$ Myr period around a central massive black hole can meet the required energies to generate ORCs around some galaxies, which have recently undergone a merger. The potential hosts for ORCs are identified here as abundant post-starburst galaxies at intermediate redshifts having massive black holes. A measurable fraction ($\sim8$ per cent) of recently discovered arcmin-size circular diffuse radio sources termed as Odd Radio Circles or ORCs can be supernovae remnants in the intragroup medium, within the local group and its immediate neighbour groups of galaxies. This estimate is based on the optical detection rate of the intragroup supernovae events in the nearby ($z \sim 0.1-0.2$) galaxy groups. A rate of about 5400 intragroup supernovae per million year is expected within the local and its immediate neighbour groups of galaxies. For a radio detectability period of about $10^{4}$ years, on average 1.3 intragroup medium supernovae remnants per 1000 square degree are expected to be detected in the radio surveys with a sensitivity that led to discovery of ORCs. The angular size, surface brightness and radio flux of the supernova remnants up to a distance of $\sim3$ Mpc in the intragroup medium can be expected to be similar to the five known ORCs. The intragroup supernovae remnants are not residing in the dense and cold interstellar medium of the galaxies but evolving in low density ($10^{-4}-10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) warm medium ($10^{5}-10^{6}$ K) in galactic halos or beyond, and may find their progenitors in the diffuse stellar light associated with various tidal streamers surrounding the Milky-Way and other nearby galaxies., Comment: 5 pages, 0 figures or tables, R1 submitted version MNRAS Letters

It is argued that the new morphological and spectral information gleaned from the recently published LoFAR Two meter Sky Survey data release 2 (LoTSS-2 at 144 MHz) observations of the cluster Abell 980 (A980), in combination with its existing GMRT and VLA observations at higher frequencies, provide the much-needed evidence to strengthen the proposal that the cluster's radio emission comes mainly from two double radio sources, both produced by the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in two major episodes of jet activity. The two radio lobes left from the previous activity have become diffuse and developed an ultra-steep radio spectrum while rising buoyantly through the confining hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) and, concomitantly, the host galaxy has drifted to the cluster centre and entered a new active phase manifested by a coinciding younger double radio source. The new observational results and arguments presented here bolster the case that the old and young double radio sources in A980 conjointly represent a `double-double' radio galaxy whose two lobe-pairs have lost colinearity due to the (lateral) drift of their parent galaxy, making this system by far the most plausible case of a `Detached-Double-Double Radio Galaxy' (dDDRG)., Comment: Accepted for publication by Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA); 10 pages, 6 figures

We present a detailed study of fossil group candidates identified in "Last Journey", a gravity-only cosmological simulation covering a $(3.4\, h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc})^3$ volume with a particle mass resolution of $m_p \approx 2.7 \times 10^9\, h^{-1}\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The simulation allows us to simultaneously capture a large number of group-scale halos and to resolve their internal structure. Historically, fossil groups have been characterized by high X-ray brightness and a large luminosity gap between the brightest and second brightest galaxy in the group. In order to identify candidate halos that host fossil groups, we use halo merger tree information to introduce two parameters: a luminous merger mass threshold ($M_\mathrm{LM}$) and a last luminous merger redshift cut-off ($z_\mathrm{LLM}$). The final parameter choices are informed by observational data and allow us to identify a plausible fossil group sample from the simulation. The candidate halos are characterized by reduced substructure and are therefore less likely to host bright galaxies beyond the brightest central galaxy. We carry out detailed studies of this sample, including analysis of halo properties and clustering. We find that our simple assumptions lead to fossil group candidates that form early, have higher concentrations, and are more relaxed compared to other halos in the same mass range., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. The uncertainty in the photometric redshift estimation is one of the major systematics in weak lensing cosmology. The self-calibration method is able to reduce this systematics without assuming strong priors. We improve the recently proposed self-calibration algorithm to enhance the stability and robustness with the noisy measurement. The improved algorithm is tested on the power spectra measured from the simulated catalogues constructed according to DECaLS DR8 photometric catalogue. Axion-like particles, including the QCD axion, are well-motivated dark matter candidates. Numerical simulations have revealed coherent soliton configurations, also known as boson stars, in the centers of axion halos. We study evolution of axion solitons immersed into a gas of axion waves with Maxwellian velocity distribution. Combining analytical approach with controlled numerical simulations we find that heavy solitons grow by condensation of axions from the gas, while light solitons evaporate. We deduce the parametric dependence of the soliton growth/evaporation rate and show that it is proportional to the rate of the kinetic relaxation in the gas. The proportionality coefficient is controlled by the product of the soliton radius and the typical gas momentum or, equivalently, the ratio of the gas and soliton virial temperatures. [Context] Isolated stellar-mass black holes accrete gas from their surroundings, often at supersonic speeds, and can form outflows that may influence the accreted gas. The latter process, known as mechanical feedback, can significantly affect the accretion rate., [Aims] We use hydrodynamical simulations to assess the impact of mechanical feedback on the accretion rate when the black hole moves supersonically through a uniform medium., [Methods] We carried out three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical simulations of outflows fueled by accretion that interact with a uniform medium, probing scales equivalent to and larger than the accretor gravitational sphere of influence. In the simulations, the accretor is at rest and the medium moves at supersonic speeds. The outflow power is assumed to be proportional to the accretion rate. The simulations were run for different outflow-medium motion angles and velocity ratios. We also investigated the impact of different degrees of outflow collimation, accretor size, and resolution., [Results] In general, the accretion rate is significantly affected by mechanical feedback. There is a minor reduction in accretion for outflows perpendicular to the medium motion, but the reduction quickly becomes more significant for smaller angles. Moreover, the decrease in accretion becomes greater for smaller medium-to-outflow velocity ratios. On the other hand, the impact of outflow collimation seems moderate. Mechanical feedback is enhanced when the accretor size is reduced. For a population of black holes with random outflow orientations, the average accretion rate drops by (low–high resolution) ∼0.2 − 0.4 and ∼0.1 − 0.2 for medium-to-outflow velocity ratios of 1/20 and 1/100, respectively, when compared to the corresponding cases without outflow., [Conclusions] Our results strongly indicate that on the considered scales, mechanical feedback can easily reduce the energy available from supersonic accretion by at least a factor of a few. In recent years, interstellar dust has become a crucial topic in the study of the high and very high redshift Universe. Evidence points to the existence of high dust masses in massive star forming galaxies already during the Epoch of Reionization, potentially affecting the escape of ionising photons into the intergalactic medium. Moreover, correctly estimating dust extinction at UV wavelengths is essential for precise ultra-violet luminosity function (UVLF) prediction and interpretation. In this paper, we investigate the impact of dust on the observed properties of high redshift galaxies, and cosmic reionization. To this end, we couple a physical model for dust production to the fully coupled radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation code RAMSES-CUDATON, and perform a $16^3$, $2048^3$, simulation, that we call DUSTiER for DUST in the Epoch of Reionization. It yields galaxies with dust masses and UV slopes compatible with constraints at z $\geq 5$. We find that extinction has a dramatic impact on the bright end of the UVLF, even as early as $\rm z=8$, and our dusty UVLFs are in better agreement with observations than dust-less UVLFs. The fraction of obscured star formation rises up to 45% at $\rm z=5$, in agreement with some of the latest results from ALMA. Finally, we find that dust reduces the escape of ionising photons from galaxies more massive than $10^{10} M_\odot$ (brighter than $\approx -18$ MAB1600) by >10%, and possibly up to 80-90% for our most massive galaxies. We produce several public void catalogs using a volume-limited subsample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7). Using new implementations of three different void-finding algorithms, VoidFinder and two ZOBOV-based algorithms (VIDE and REVOLVER), we identify 1163, 531, and 518 cosmic voids with radii >10 Mpc/h, respectively, out to a redshift of z = 0.114 assuming a Planck 2018 cosmology, and 1184, 535, and 519 cosmic voids assuming a WMAP5 cosmology. We compute effective radii and centers for all voids and find none with an effective radius >54 Mpc/h. The median void effective radius is 15-19 Mpc/h for all three algorithms. We extract and discuss several properties of the void populations, including radial density profiles, the volume fraction of the catalog contained within voids, and the fraction of galaxies contained within voids. Using 64 mock galaxy catalogs created from the Horizon Run 4 N-body simulation, we compare simulated and observed void properties and find good agreement between the SDSS DR7 and mock catalog results., 14 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJS

We analyze the first set of cosmological baryonic zoom-in simulations of galaxies in dissipative self-interacting dark matter (dSIDM). The simulations utilize the FIRE-2 galaxy formation physics with the inclusion of dissipative dark matter self-interactions modelled as a constant fractional energy dissipation ($f_{\rm diss}=0.5$). In this paper, we examine the properties of dwarf galaxies with $M_{\ast} \sim 10^{5}\operatorname{-}10^{9}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ in both isolation and within Milky Way-mass hosts. For isolated dwarfs, we find more compact galaxy sizes and promotion of stellar/neutral gas disk formation in dSIDM with $(\sigma/m)\leq 1\,{\rm cm^2\,g^{-1}}$ but they are still consistent with observed galaxy sizes and masses. In addition, as a result of the steeper central density profiles developed in dSIDM, the sub-kpc circular velocities of isolated dwarfs in models with $(\sigma/m)\geq 0.1\,{\rm cm^2\,g^{-1}}$ are enhanced by about a factor of two, which are still consistent with the measured stellar velocity dispersions of Local Group dwarfs but in tension with the HI rotation curves of more massive field dwarfs. Meanwhile, for satellites of the simulated Milky Way-mass hosts, the median circular velocity profiles are marginally affected by dSIDM physics, but dSIDM may help address the missing compact dwarf satellites in CDM. The number of satellites is slightly enhanced in dSIDM, but the differences are small compared with the large host-to-host variations. In conclusion, the dSIDM models with constant cross-section $(\sigma/m) \gtrsim 0.1\,{\rm cm^2\,g^{-1}}$ (assuming $f_{\rm diss}=0.5$) are effectively ruled out in bright dwarfs ($M_{\rm halo}\sim 10^{11}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$) by circular velocity constraints. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious millisecond pulses in radio, most of which originate from distant galaxies. Revealing the origin of FRBs is becoming central in astronomy. The redshift evolution of the FRB energy function, i.e., the number density of FRB sources as a function of energy, provides important implications for the FRB progenitors. Here we show the energy functions of FRBs selected from the recently released Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) catalogue using the $V_{\rm max}$ method. The $V_{\rm max}$ method allows us to measure the redshift evolution of the energy functions as it is without any prior assumption on the evolution. We use a homogeneous sample of 164 non-repeating FRB sources, which are about one order of magnitude larger than previously investigated samples. The energy functions of non-repeating FRBs show Schechter function-like shapes at $z\lesssim1$. The energy functions and volumetric rates of non-repeating FRBs decrease towards higher redshifts similar to the cosmic stellar-mass density evolution: there is no significant difference between the non-repeating FRB rate and cosmic stellar-mass density evolution with a 1\% significance threshold, whereas the cosmic star-formation rate scenario is rejected with a more than 99\% confidence level. Our results indicate that the event rate of non-repeating FRBs is likely controlled by old populations rather than young populations which are traced by the cosmic star-formation rate density. This suggests old populations such as old neutron stars and black holes as more likely progenitors of non-repeating FRBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) provide a means to probe the low end of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass distribution, as they are only observable below the Hills mass ($\lesssim 10^8$ M$_\odot$). Here we attempt to calibrate the scaling of SMBH mass with host galaxy bulge mass, enabling SMBH masses to be estimated for large TDE samples without the need for follow-up observations or extrapolations of relations based on high-mass samples. We derive host galaxy masses using Prospector fits to the UV-MIR spectral energy distributions for the hosts of 29 well-observed TDEs with BH mass estimates from MOSFiT. We then conduct detailed bulge/disk decomposition using SDSS and PanSTARRS imaging, and provide a catalog of bulge masses. We measure a positive correlation between SMBH and bulge mass for the TDE sample, with a power-law slope of 0.28 and significance $p=0.06$ (Spearmans) and $p=0.05$ (Pearsons), and an intrinsic scatter of 0.2 dex. Applying MC resampling and bootstrapping, we find a more conservative estimate of the slope is $0.18\pm0.11$, dominated by the systematic errors from Prospector and MOSFiT. This is shallower than the slope at high SMBH mass, which may be due to a bias in the TDE sample towards lower mass BHs that can more easily disrupt low-mass stars outside of the event horizon. When combining the TDE sample with that of the high mass regime, we find that TDEs are successful in extending the SMBH - stellar mass relationship further down the mass spectrum and provide a relationship across the full range of SMBH masses., Comment: Updated to match accepted MNRAS version

We present a detailed weak-lensing and X-ray study of the Frontier Fields galaxy cluster Abell 370, one of the most massive known lenses on the sky, using wide-field BRz Subaru/Sprime-Cam and Chandra X-ray observations. By combining two-dimensional (2D) shear and azimuthally averaged magnification constraints derived from Subaru data, we perform a lensing mass reconstruction in a free-form manner, which allows us to determine both radial structure and 2D morphology of the cluster mass distribution. In a triaxial framework assuming a Navarro-Frenk-White density profile, we constrain the intrinsic structure and geometry of the cluster halo by forward modeling the reconstructed mass map. We obtain a halo mass $M_{200}=(1.54 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{15}h^{-1}M_\odot$, a halo concentration $c_{200}=5.27 \pm 1.28$, and a minor-major axis ratio $q_a=0.62 \pm 0.23$ with uninformative priors. Using a prior on the line-of-sight alignment of the halo major axis derived from binary merger simulations constrained by multi-probe observations, we find that the data favor a more prolate geometry with lower mass and lower concentration. From triaxial lens modeling with the line-of-sight prior, we find a spherically enclosed gas mass fraction of $f_\mathrm{gas}=(8.4 \pm 1.0)\%$ at $0.7h^{-1}$ Mpc $\sim 0.7r_{500}$. When compared to the hydrostatic mass estimate from Chandra observations, our triaxial weak-lensing analysis yields spherically enclosed mass ratios of $1-b \equiv M_\mathrm{HE}/M_\mathrm{WL} = 0.56 \pm 0.09$ and $0.51 \pm 0.09$ at $0.7h^{-1}$ Mpc with and without using the line-of-sight prior, respectively.
