The regionalist writer João Simões Lopes Neto left several testimonies of reading, through citations and references, in all his production, even in the prose of fiction that consecrated him: Contos gauchescos (1912) and Lendas do Sul (1913). From this "imaginary library", I intend to analyze his reader profile and discuss the circulation of ideas on the southern border of Brazil. Methodologically, I seek to combine quantitative and qualitative analyzes which offer explanations for their reading trends, but also for some significant absences among the authors mentioned. As a result, it is possible to identify correspondences between the main readings and his practice of fiction writing (historiography on his themes, lyrical poetry in language), in addition to his answers to the most important problems of the field of cultural production on the southern frontier at the time: the myths of the gaucho and Farroupilha Revolution.
