The article discusses the history of Chinese painting from 700 to 1900. The author notes that before the 13th-century most Chinese paintings were created to decorate banners, screens or hand-held fans. These earlier forms were later replaced by horizontal handscrolls, hanging scrolls and albums. Other topics addressed include the practice of painting on silk, the use of lapis lazuli as a pigment, and why Chinese paintings were not intended to be displayed for long periods of time.
