CFA recorded several phases of below ground remains of Garnett's Paper Mill dating from the 17th Century to the turn of the 20th Century. This is believed to have formed the historic core of the mill, and was located at the east end of the weir on the River Wharfe. The structural remains included a mill race, stone arched culverts and wheel-houses, which later became turbine houses. These water courses still allowed water from the weir to pass through them. Within this structural framework of water courses were areas assigned to differing phases of mechanised processes, all of which underwent multiple, piecemeal alterations over the centuries, with identifiable changes from water power to steam; and from water wheels to water turbines. Whilst the structural remains are no earlier than the 17th century, the earliest in situ walls identified were built on foundations of re-used timbers, though a dendrochronological date could not be obtained from these. Within the backfill, covering these remain were found mill stones, gearing and drive parts, slag, very fine copper alloy remains as well as bottles and ceramics, very little of which was kept due to the contexts in which they were found.

This report presents the results of a buildings appraisal and a heritage impact assessment that were carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at The Old Charcoal Mill, Ponsanooth, St Gluvias, Cornwall. The work followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for the Archaeological Investigation and Recording of Standing Buildings or Structures (CIfA 2014); Understanding Historic Buildings: A Guide to Good Recording Processes (Historic England 2016); Conservation Principles: Policies and Guidance for the Sustainable Management of the Historic Environment (English Heritage 2008); The Setting of Heritage Assets (Historic England 2017); Seeing History in the View (English Heritage 2011); Managing Change in the Historic Environment: Setting (Historic Scotland 2016); Visual Assessment of Wind Farms: Best Practice (University of Newcastle 2002); Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment: 3rd Edition (Landscape Institute 2013); and ICOMOS guidance (2011). The building at The Old Charcoal Mill is present on the tithe mapping and on possible earlier OS draft mapping, with several alterations having been made during both the 19th century and the 20th century. It is clear that the building has been subject to several phases of development, with these phases of development having been primarily centred upon an industrial function that may have been attributed to woollen manufacturing, paper milling, and possible processing for a nearby mine or for charcoal refinement. The building has been heavily altered and few earlier architectural features remain, though interesting structural phasing is evident, an element of which would suggest the presence of an earlier build that would pre-date 1800. The building has been assessed as of moderate heritage value and it should be considered as a local undesignated heritage asset, with it retaining vernacular features, addressing a former industrialised post medieval landscape, and representing the expansion of and the investment into Cornwall during both the 18th century and the 19th century. That being said, the building is not comparable to a grade II listed building and it has been heavily altered, having been largely stripped to create an emphasised significance on the eastern elevation and on the few remaining internal features (beams and trusses). There is an overarching interest in finding a sustainable use for what is an important historic building in Ponsanooth and it is felt that the process of consultation in designing a final scheme has produced positive results that have engaged successfully with the character and the feel of the setting and the narrative. It is recommended that a full programme of archaeological monitoring and recording is undertaken to determine the adaptions to and the origins of the building, including the monitoring of groundworks and the monitoring of landscaping in the immediate area around the footprint of the building, before works commence and with the building in its current state with all modern wall treatments removed.

text The archaeological works have revealed evidence for prehistoric use of the site. A pit of Middle Neolithic date contained pottery, prehistoric worked flint, part of a saddle quern and hazelnut shells. Across the site further pits were uncovered which may be contemporary with the Middle Neolithic pit, but only one of these contained a find of prehistoric worked flint. A ditch of post-medieval date, probably for drainage adjacent to a former field boundary known from historic mapping, contained finds of medieval and post-medieval date and eight postholes are probably for fence posts associated with this boundary. The Middle Neolithic finds are of regional importance and a paper has been submitted for publication in the Proceedings of the Devon Archaeological Society.

In summary, the work has involved: � Identifying the client's objectives � Identifying the cartographic and documentary sources available for consultation � Assembling, consulting and examining those sources � Identifying and collating the results of recent fieldwork � Site walkover The principal sources consulted in assessing this site were: � National Monuments Record The heritage values of the site will be assessed using English Heritage Conservation principles (2008) guidelines, which state that people value a place for many reasons beyond utility or personal association: for its distinctive architecture or landscape, the story it can tell about its past, its connection with notable people or events, its landform, flora and fauna, because they find it beautiful or inspiring, or for its role as a focus of a community. These values can be summarised as:Evidential value derives from the potential of a place to yield evidence about past human activity. � Historical value derives from the ways in which past people, events and aspects of life can be connected through a place to the present. � Aesthetic value derives from the ways in which people draw sensory and intellectual stimulation from a place. � Communal value derives from the meanings of a place for the people who relate to it, or for whom it figures in their collective experience or memory. An assessment has been made of the historical and archaeological background of Oxhill. The historic maps have been consulted and it has been determined that there is little evidence for earlier activity known on the proposal site. The report was request in respect to paragraph 128 of the NPPF, which requests consideration of the development on heritage assets. The church is a heritage asset as it is classed as a grade I listed building. Though the proposed development is in close proximity to the structure, there is only one view of the church that will be affected by the development and this is along Green Lane. However, the affect that this development will have here is minimal.

Proposed paper in the County Journal - Proceedings of the Devon Archaeological Society. This paper will include not only the pipeline findings but also evidence of a Bronze Age 'oven' and a Bronze Age roundhouse and enclosure from the Langage Energy Centre.

The information from these two sources is cross-referenced in the gazetteer (Section 7.2). All of the early Ordnance Survey map extracts reproduced in this report are from the originals or microfiche held at the London Metropolitan Archive. There has been no archaeological work carried out at Christ the King RC First School. The assessment of its potential has, therefore, relied on predictive modelling based on the known distribution of remains within a 1000 metre radius of the site (from a central grid reference of TQ 06010 74120). The information about standing historical and listed buildings with the same radius of Christ the King RC First School has also been collated. This has been noted, but no detailed examination of the buildings is reported. The available evidence is derived from casual finds, archaeological investigations, standing buildings and historical records. It should be stressed that the distribution represents the extent of current knowledge and is the product of chance. For this reason, apparently blank zones should not be automatically regarded as being devoid of remains. The assessment of the likely condition of any potential archaeological remains has relied upon a study of the available historical maps and observations made during the site walkover, which provide evidence for the impact of previous land-use on the site. There have been no restrictions on reporting or access to the relevant records. The copyright to the Surrey Historic Environment Record is held by Surrey County Council and the historical maps by London Metropolitan Archive (Figures 11 to 15). The proposal site at Stanwell is located within an area where much prehistoric archaeology of national importance has been found. The complex of Neolithic through to Roman period remains found at Terminal 5 is indicative of the general spread of periods and density of remains which watching briefs, evaluations and excavations have largely revealed in and around Stanwell village. The negative evidence indicates that there have been archaeological interventions in the vicinity of the proposal site. These however cannot be understood to indicate either the presence or absence of archaeological remains within the proposal area. The proposed development is likely to encounter prehistoric archaeology, as there have been a number of finds in the surrounding area. The absence of linear features or ring ditches on aerial photographs does not mean that there is an absence of archaeological remains on a site. Rather, potential remains are more likely to be small discrete features, such as pits or postholes. The dating for such remains extends from the Neolithic until the Roman period.

The approaches adopted and the sources consulted additionally follow the recommendations for desk-based assessments outlined in Exeter City Council's planning guidance for archaeology and development (February 2004). The work has involved the consultation of the available documentary evidence, including records of previous discoveries and historic maps, and has been supplemented with a site walkover. The format of the report is adapted from an Institute of Field Archaeologists Standard Guidance paper (IFA 2001). In summary, the work has involved: � identifying the client's objectives; identifying the cartographic and documentary sources available for consultation; assembling, consulting and examining those sources; dentifying and collating the results of recent fieldwork; and �a site walkover. The principal sources consulted in assessing this site were: �the Devon County Sites and Monuments Record; the Exeter City Council Urban Archaeological Database; the Archaeology Officer for the Devon County Archaeological Service; the Archaeology Officer for Exeter City Council; the Devon Record Office; the West Country Studies Library; the National Monuments Record; and the Results of a Geophysical Survey on the Site (Heard 2006a). The Devon Sites and Monuments Record holds details of all known archaeological and historic sites in the vicinity of the proposed development. Work in the Exeter City Urban Archaeological Database was confined to the consultation of a report on a recent geophysical survey carried out on land to the south of the A379 (Heard 2006b) and an environmental statement for Exeter Rugby Group (Faber Munsell 2003). The Archaeology Officers for Exeter City Council and the Devon County Archaeological Service provided details of recent fieldwork still to be entered on the County Sites and Monuments Record or where reports are not yet available. The Devon Record Office retains the tithe and other historic maps including some of the Ordnance Survey editions. The West Country Studies Library has facsimile copies of some of the smaller scale historic maps of Devon, a selection of Ordnance Survey editions and a range of secondary documentary sources. Research at the National Monuments Record was confined to a consultation of the aerial photographic collection and listing schedules held by English Heritage. The geophysical survey on the site has just been completed as part of the assessment process (Heard 2006a). There has been no other archaeological work carried out within the proposed development area. The assessment of its potential has, therefore, relied on the results of the geophysical survey (Heard 2006a) and predictive modelling based on the known distribution of remains within a one kilometre radius of the site (from a central grid reference of SX 9616 9120). This search area was defined in consultation with the Archaeology Officer for Exeter City Council and was designed to include the evidence necessary for an informed appraisal of the proposed development area. The available information is derived from geophysical surveys, watching briefs, evaluations, excavations, systematic surface collections, unsystematic surface collections, artefacts recovered by metal detectorists, casual finds, aerial photographs and historical records. It should be stressed that the distribution represents the extent of current knowledge and is the product of chance. Although selected parts of the local landscape have been the subject of systematic archaeological fieldwork, this has not covered the entire area. For this reason, apparently blank zones should not be automatically regarded as being devoid of remains.

It was intended that a profile of the stratigraphy and environmental potential be compiled by the initial monitoring and recording of two lines of six post pads: one parallel with and one perpendicular to the book, with further work undertaken if requested by Mr. Whitehead. The monitoring and recording was undertaken by a OA supervisor undertaking regular visits to the site timed to coincide with the excavation of the post pads. During this time both the base and the sections of the excavations were closely observed for features and the spoil examined for dating evidence. A site plan showing the location of the excavations and the sections was compiled at a scale of 1:100 together with sample sections of the stratigraphy drawn at a scale of 1:20. All features and deposits were issued with unique context numbers, and context recording was in accordance with established OA Field Manual (OAU 1992). Colour transparency and black-and-white negative photographs were taken during the ground-works to demonstrate the stratigraphy and sections. The watching brief was undertaken in accordance with relevant professional standards, including the IFA's Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Evaluations 1992 and the Archaeological Guidance Papers issued by the Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service, especially Guidance Paper 3, Standards and Practices in Archaeological Fieldwork in London, and Guidance Paper 4, Archaeological Reports. In February 2004 Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out an archaeological watching brief at the Tesco Extra site at New Malden, Surrey. The work was commissioned by BMD Architects in advance of the erection of an extension and canopy to the existing bulk store. The watching brief revealed that the area had been heavily truncated with any original overburden being removed down to the top of the underlying alluvial clay, probably during the original construction of the Tesco store. No evidence for archaeological remains or activity was encountered. As this was a sterile site MoL was contacted and it has been agreed with Robin Lockyer that only the OASIS upload is required. The documentary archive will not be deposited to MoL.

Medieval Archaeology, 47, 53-83, The paper examines a sample area of countryside and seeks to explain the medieval pattern of settlement and landscape in terms of the classifications devised by previous scholars. The physical environment of the area and its development before AD 400 shared many characteristics with the wider region. However in the medieval period, as woodland regenerated, the area assumed a hybrid character, adopting some features of woodland societies together with others distinctive of the arable or `champion' countryside surrounding it. The paper demonstrates the mix of settlement and landscape types in the area and illustrates the utility of the concept of pays.

RDA were commissioned to carry out a site survey inspection and research to assess the heritage significance for the property 'as existing', designated GDII *, with research before and after RDA site inspection survey of the whole building. This report included consulting HER from Worcester City Council and recalling historic planning papers. This report includes a brief historical background of Broad Street Worcester, setting and vistas, history of the site; 61 Broad Street Worcester, including archive research. A visit to Worcester County Records was also undertaken. This report also includes; A Planning history, Phasing, Map Regression Exercise, A Heritage Survey: Understanding the History and Architecture with written building descriptions with RDA Photographs using architects plans annotated by ourselves. Floor plans 'as existing' were provided , Cellar, GF, 1,2,3,4 Floors. An Interior Analysis and Phasing is equivalent to at least a Historic England Building Recording Level 2 'A Guide to Good Recording Practice Published 24 May 2016' as a means of assessing the significance retained, as of 2022. Conclusion; A Statement of Significance; Assessment of Significance-Historical Value; Evidential/Architectural Value; Setting/ Group Value; Community Value, and some Conservation advice. This assessment was commissioned to help inform the LPA on a proposal but is not an analysis of any proposed new works or the impact. A Schedule of works and Impact Assessment should be carried out taking into account the findings from this heritage report. This report does include some assessment of significance of the heritage asset and its surroundings and analysis of the historic fabric as found and could be seen on July 30th 2022 There was one site visit made on July 30th to access and take photographs, equivalent to a Level 2 Building Recording, [Ref Understanding Historic Buildings A Guide to Good Recording Practice Historic England May 2016] as a means of assessing the significance of 61 Broad Street but this was not a standalone 'building recording' although this report may negate a recording as condition. 61 Broad Street [GDII* listed], in the City of Worcester Worcestershire is important architecturally and has original mid-18th century features. To the elevations to the front these are the original brick, early 18th Venetian windows with figurine keystones; decorative quoins, a parapet with urns. To the rear there is some further original mid-18th century brickwork. Later phasing includes the replacement dome and shop front window, that have historical and community significance. Later alterations have involved the removal of the ground floor arches and there was substantial underpinning in the cellar although some brick arches remain. Internally notably there is a fine example of a continuous staircase carried over four floors with 18th century Chinese Chippendale timber balustrades/fretwork mentioned in the list description. There are notable timber chimney pieces also mentioned in the list description, each with their own character. The Second and Third Floor have not been subject to the same C20 C21 interventions and more original fabric remains including a simple decorated ceiling to Front Second Floor. There is an historical association in 1787 with Joseph Blackburn a renowned painter who may have had the building built, and Edwin Lees for a short while during 1829 to 1831 [See Section 4.4] Joseph Blackburn was one of the most important painters working in colonial America during the 1750s and 1760s. Portraits by him hang in many American galleries as well as a number in Britain. Around one hundred and fifty paintings have been attributed to him. He was buried at St Nicholas Church Worcester, now the Slug and Lettuce, on 11th July 1787. Edwin Lees was well known naturalist and printer.

Aims and objectives The principal aim of the study is to gain a better understanding of the archaeology of the works area in order to understand the potential impacts of the works and to inform any future monitoring work. The objectives are to: " Obtain a photographic record of the site prior to commencement of works. " Monitor the stabilisation works on the access trackway. " Monitor the replacement of the existing electricity tower. " Obtain a photographic record of the site on completion of works and once removal of the temporary access road has taken place. " To produce a written report summarising the findings of the monitoring works and to complete a record on the work for the OASIS/ADS-Online database. Working methods All recording work will be undertaken according to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) guidance (CIfA 2014a, 2014b, 2014c). Staff will follow the CIfA Code of Conduct (2014d). The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists is the professional body for archaeologists working in the UK. Creation of the physical and digital archive Following review with the CAU Project Manager the results from the fieldwork will be collated as an archive. This will involve the following. " All finds, etc., will be washed, catalogued, and stored in a proper manner (being clearly labelled and marked and stored according to CAU guidelines). " All records (drawings, context sheets, photographs, etc.) will be ordered, catalogued and stored in an appropriate manner (according to CAU guidelines). " Any black and white negative film will be catalogued and deposited with the site archive. " Colour digital images taken as part of the site archive will be either converted from colour to black and white negative film and added to the site archive, or deposited with the Archaeology Data Service (ADS). " Completion of the Historic England/ADS OASIS online archive index. " All correspondence relating to the project, the WSI, and a single paper copy of the report, stored in an archive standard (acid-free) documentation box. " Drawn archive storage (plastic wallets for the annotated record drawings). " Additional digital data (survey, external reports, etc) Archive deposition An index to the site archive will be created and the archive contents prepared for long term storage, in accordance with CAU standards. " The project archive will be deposited initially at ReStore PLC, Liskeard and in due course (when space permits) at Cornwall Record Office. " Digital data will be stored on the Cornwall Council network which is regularly and frequently backed up. Fieldwork: photographic record Prior to the commencement of any works a photographic record of the site will be made. High resolution digital photographs will be taken on archaeological features within the development area.

Photographs were taken using digital photography from each side of the River Kent. Due to the location of Bowston Weir, being within the river, the structure was photographed from locations where it was safe to do so. There was restricted access on the west bank of the river as this area is now residential and access was not possible immediately to the west of the weir due to this area being fenced off to the public. As the structure is located within the river, it was not possible to utilise a scale in the photographs. Bowston Weir appears to have been constructed in 1874 as part of the control of water for Bowston Paper Mill which was located on the west bank of the River Kent. A weir is a low dam that is constructed across a body of water, and is designed to hold back water and regulate its flow. It formed part of a system of water control which included the resulting mill dam or pond, which was formed when the weir was constructed, sluices and mill races. It is not clear if the fish passes, or ladders, which are now present within the weir formed part of its original design. The western of the passes appears to be shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1914, but it has been suggested that one was constructed in 1948 and the other in 1991. The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of two trenches. Trench 1, sited across the footprint of the proposed building, measured 20m long x 1.8m wide; Trench 2, located across the footprint of the proposed swimming pool, measured 10m long x 1.8m wide. Both trenches were located on cement-paved areas (Fig. 2, 7 - 8): Trenches were set out on OS National Grid co-ordinates using Leica GPS. Superficial cement/stone paving was removed by a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothed bucket. Overburden was then stripped from the trenches by means of a toothless grading bucket. All machining was conducted under archaeological supervision to the top of the natural substrate, which was the level at which archaeological features were first encountered. Records were maintained in accordance with CA Technical Manual 1: Fieldwork Recording Manual. Deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential in accordance with CA Technical Manual 2: The Taking and Processing of Environmental and Other Samples from Archaeological Sites. No deposits were identified that required sampling. Given the absence of archaeological finds and features, the paper archive will be scanned and then discarded in accordance with Museum of London guidelines. The digital archive will be stored in CA's digital repository, where data migration and backup procedures are in place, and the integrity of the digital archive is maintained in accordance with Standard and guidance for the creation, compilation, transfer and deposition of archaeological archives (CIfA 2014b; updated October 2020). The digital archive will not be deposited with the Archaeology Data Service (ADS). A summary of information from this project, as set out in Appendix B, will be entered onto the OASIS online database of archaeological projects in Britain. In December 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at The Mill House, Hadley Highstone, Barnet, North London. A total of two trenches were excavated. No features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed and no artefactual material pre-dating the modern period was recovered.

This report covers the salvage of fire and water damaged archives, which included both paper records and photographic materials. The damp papers were air-dried, while the wet ones were freeze-dried, and where possible the photographic materials were treated separately. Includes recommendations for the compilation of paper archives with regard to salvage after disasters.

The work associated with this project was carried out by staff from HFA, in accordance with the written scheme of investigation for archaeological evaluation by trial excavation produced by HFA, (Atkinson, D. May 2021), and with reference to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists 2014 (a) Standard and Guidance for archaeological field evaluation and (b) Standard and Guidance for archaeological excavation. The scheme of works comprised the excavation of seven trenches, 30m long by 2m wide which were excavated across the site in the positions agreed with HHER (see Fig 2). Standard Humber Field Archaeology recording procedures were used throughout; each identified feature was allocated a context number, with written descriptions recorded on pro forma sheets. Plans and sections were drawn to scale on pre-printed permatrace sheets. A digital photographic record was maintained. The locations of the trenches and the level of the features were surveyed relative to the Ordnance Survey National Grid and Ordnance Datum respectively, using survey-grade GPS equipment. A small percentage (approximate 3%) of the spoil generated from the excavation of the trenches was sieved by hand to see if there were any artefacts contained in the topsoil horizon which would help to provide any background information about the area. In the event, no artefacts were recovered during this portion of the work. Overall, no artefacts were retained during this programme of work, although a copy of the report in .pdf format will be sent to the appropriate repository, in this case the East Riding of Yorkshire Museums Service. The paper archive will be remain with HFA. In April 2020 a programme of archaeological evaluation by trial excavation was undertaken by Humber Field Archaeology in in support of the proposals for the Phase 9 extension to the Phase 5 building (area 3) and an additional area (area 4) to the south at the Dianthus Business Park, Common Lane, Newport, East Riding of Yorkshire. Seven trenches were excavated. Five of the trenches (1, 2, 5, 6 and 7) contained no archaeological features, and only contained the remnants of disused ceramic land drainage schemes. Trenches 3 and 4 demonstrated the remains of a former 19th century field boundary which can be seen on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of this area from 1855. This ditch was likely filled in to create a larger arable field after 1966, as the boundary appears on maps from that period, but not subsequently.

This project was a detailed analysis of lidar imaging to record potential archaeological features whether already known or newly recorded using freely accessible data and software. QGIS freeware was used to record the findings and the RAW lidar data was sourced primarily from the Environment Agency. Processing allowed multiple permutations of imaging to better identify subtle outlines of features. Due to the size of Dartmoor, the area was split into 18 sections when recording to make for a more manageable post project data base. By mapping all the features on a single data base it has given an incredibly powerful overview of just how busy and rich in features the whole of Dartmoor, including the hinterland is, which is just not possible in a paper account. An enormous amount of data has been created which will need to be ground truthed. The project identified previously unrecorded small settlements and extended the footprint of some of the already recorded ones. In some cases known reaves were able to be extended. It was possible to identify earlier enclosure banks which had been modified to suit the more linear enclosures of later generations and to locate abandoned farmsteads by subtle banking. A previously unknown iron age hill enclosure was identified which has had a preliminary survey conducted to confirm its age. Dartmoor is too large an area for one person to conduct ground truthing over the entire moor so it is hoped that gradually over time people will become aware of this project and the aim is to eventually recruit volunteers who would like to visit sites and report back as to the accuracy of the findings. The data can then be updated as time goes on. This project will be an ongoing updateable record of archaeological features on Dartmoor for future reference.
