This book is a collection of articles written in memory of Boris Dubrovin (1950–2019). The authors express their admiration for his remarkable personality and for the contributions he made to mathematical physics. For many of the authors, Dubrovin was a friend, colleague, inspiring mentor, and teacher. The contributions to this collection of papers are split into two parts: “Integrable Systems” and “Quantum Theories and Algebraic Geometry”, reflecting the areas of main scientific interests of Dubrovin. Chronologically, these interests may be divided into several parts: integrable systems, integrable systems of hydrodynamic type, WDVV equations (Frobenius manifolds), isomonodromy equations (flat connections), and quantum cohomology. The articles included in the first part are more or less directly devoted to these areas (primarily with the first three listed above). The second part contains articles on quantum theories and algebraic geometry and is less directly connected with Dubrovin's early interests.

Hopf algebras have been shown to play a natural role in studying questions of integral module structure in extensions of local or global fields. This book surveys the state of the art in Hopf-Galois theory and Hopf-Galois module theory and can be viewed as a sequel to the first author's book, Taming Wild Extensions: Hopf Algebras and Local Galois Module Theory, which was published in 2000. The book is divided into two parts. Part I is more algebraic and focuses on Hopf-Galois structures on Galois field extensions, as well as the connection between this topic and the theory of skew braces. Part II is more number theoretical and studies the application of Hopf algebras to questions of integral module structure in extensions of local or global fields. Graduate students and researchers with a general background in graduate-level algebra, algebraic number theory, and some familiarity with Hopf algebras will appreciate the overview of the current state of this exciting area and the suggestions for numerous avenues for further research and investigation.

Articles in this volume are based on talks given at the International Workshop on Hopf Algebras and Tensor Categories, held from September 9–13, 2019, at Nanjing University, Nanjing, China. The articles highlight the latest advances and further research directions in a variety of subjects related to tensor categories and Hopf algebras. Primary topics discussed in the text include the classification of Hopf algebras, structures and actions of Hopf algebras, algebraic supergroups, representations of quantum groups, quasi-quantum groups, algebras in tensor categories, and the construction method of fusion categories.

The main topic of this book can be described as the theory of algebraic and topological structures admitting natural representations by operators in vector spaces. These structures include topological algebras, Lie algebras, topological groups, and Lie groups. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 surveys general facts for beginners, including linear algebra and functional analysis. Part 2 considers associative algebras, Lie algebras, topological groups, and Lie groups, along with some aspects of ring theory and the theory of algebraic groups. The author provides a detailed account of classical results in related branches of mathematics, such as invariant integration and Lie's theory of connections between Lie groups and Lie algebras. Part 3 discusses semisimple Lie algebras and Lie groups, Banach algebras, and quantum groups.

The ultimate goal of this book is to explain that the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group, as defined by Drinfeld in quantum group theory, has a topological interpretation as a group of homotopy automorphisms associated to the little 2-disc operad. To establish this result, the applications of methods of algebraic topology to operads must be developed. This volume is devoted primarily to this subject, with the main objective of developing a rational homotopy theory for operads. The book starts with a comprehensive review of the general theory of model categories and of general methods of homotopy theory. The definition of the Sullivan model for the rational homotopy of spaces is revisited, and the definition of models for the rational homotopy of operads is then explained. The applications of spectral sequence methods to compute homotopy automorphism spaces associated to operads are also explained. This approach is used to get a topological interpretation of the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group in the case of the little 2-disc operad. This volume is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in the applications of homotopy theory methods in operad theory. It is accessible to readers with a minimal background in classical algebraic topology and operad theory.

The Workshop on Group Theory and Numerical Analysis brought together scientists working in several different but related areas. The unifying theme was the application of group theory and geometrical methods to the solution of differential and difference equations. The emphasis was on the combination of analytical and numerical methods and also the use of symbolic computation. This meeting was organized under the auspices of the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Université de Montréal (Canada). This volume has the character of a monograph and should represent a useful reference book for scientists working in this highly topical field.

This volume includes the proceedings of a workshop on Invariant Theory held at Queen's University (Ontario). The workshop was part of the theme year held under the auspices of the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) in Montreal. The gathering brought together two communities of researchers: those working in characteristic 0 and those working in positive characteristic. The book contains three types of papers: survey articles providing introductions to computational invariant theory, modular invariant theory of finite groups, and the invariant theory of Lie groups; expository works recounting recent research in these three areas and beyond; and open problems of current interest. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers working in invariant theory.

This volume contains the proceedings from the International Conference on Nonlinear Evolutionary Partial Differential Equations held in Beijing in June 1993. The topic for the conference was selected because of its importance in the natural sciences and for its mathematical signifcance. Discussion topics include conservation laws, dispersion waves, Einstein's theory of gravitation, reaction-diffusion equations, the Navier-Stokes equations, and more. New results were presented and are featured in this volume.

This volume contains a selection of papers based on presentations given at the S. P. Novikov seminar held at the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow. Topics and speakers were chosen by the well-known expert, S. P. Novikov, one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century. His diverse interests are the tradition of the seminar and are reflected in the topics presented in the book. The book begins with Novikov's paper analyzing the position of mathematics and theoretical physics at the beginning of the new millennium. Following is an interview with Novikov published in the Newsletter of the European Mathematical Society presenting the genesis of many of his ideas and his scientific school. The remaining articles address topics in geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. The volume is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in the corresponding areas of mathematics and physics.

These proceedings are from the Tenth International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (ICRA X) held at The Fields Institute. In addition to the traditional “instructional” workshop preceding the conference, there were also workshops on “Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory”, “Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory”, and “Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras”. These workshops reflect the latest developments and the increasing interest in areas that are closely related to the representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras. Although these workshops were organized separately, their topics are strongly interrelated. The book is recommended for graduate students and researchers in algebra and geometry.

In the last fifty years of the twentieth century Riemannian geometry has exploded with activity. Berger marks the start of this period with Rauch's pioneering paper of 1951, which contains the first real pinching theorem and an amazing leap in the depth of the connection between geometry and topology. Since then, the field has become so rich that it is almost impossible for the uninitiated to find their way through it. Textbooks on the subject invariably must choose a particular approach, thus narrowing the path. In this book, Berger provides a truly remarkable survey of the main developments in Riemannian geometry in the last fifty years, focusing his main attention on the following five areas: Curvature and topology; the construction of and the classification of space forms; distinguished metrics, especially Einstein metrics; eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian; the study of periodic geodesics and the geodesic flow. Other topics are treated in less detail in a separate section. Berger's survey provides a detailed map to the major developments of Riemannian geometry from 1950 to 1999. Important threads are highlighted, with brief descriptions of the results that make up that thread. This supremely scholarly account is remarkable for its careful citations and voluminous bibliography. This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth Spanish Meeting on Number Theory, held from July 8–12, 2013, at the Universidad de Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain. The articles contained in this book give a panoramic vision of the current research in number theory, both in Spain and abroad. Some of the topics covered in this volume are classical algebraic number theory, arithmetic geometry, and analytic number theory.

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference “New Trends in Noncommutative Algebra”, held at the University of Washington, Seattle, in August 2010, in honor of Ken Goodearl's 65th birthday. The articles reflect the wide interests of Goodearl and will provide researchers and graduate students with an indispensable overview of topics of current interest. Specific fields covered include: noncommutative algebraic geometry, representation theory, Calabi–Yau algebras, quantum algebras and deformation quantization, Poisson algebras, growth of algebras, group algebras, and noncommutative Iwasawa algebras.

This volume presents the proceedings of the conference held in honor of J. Michael Boardman's 60th birthday. It brings into print his classic work on conditionally convergent spectral sequences. Over the past 30 years, it has become evident that some of the deepest questions in algebra are best understood against the background of homotopy theory. Boardman and Vogt's theory of homotopy-theoretic algebraic structures and the theory of spectra, for example, were two benchmark breakthroughs underlying the development of algebraic $K$-theory and the recent advances in the theory of motives. The volume begins with short notes by Mac Lane, May, Stasheff, and others on the early and recent history of the subject. But the bulk of the volume consists of research papers on topics that have been strongly influenced by Boardman's work. Articles give readers a vivid sense of the current state of the theory of “homotopy-invariant algebraic structures”. Also included are two major foundational papers by Goerss and Strickland on applications of methods of algebra (i.e., Dieudonné modules and formal schemes) to problems of topology. Boardman is known for the depth and wit of his ideas. This volume is intended to reflect and to celebrate those fine characteristics.

This book consists of twenty-nine articles contributed by participants of an International Conference in Algebraic Topology held in July 1991 in Oaxtepec, Mexico. In addition to papers on current research, there are several surveys and expositions on the work of Mark Mahowald, whose sixtieth birthday was celebrated during the conference. The conference was truly international, with over 130 mathematicians from fifteen countries. It ended with a spectacular total eclipse of the sun, a photograph of which appears as the frontispiece. The papers range over much of algebraic topology and cross over into related areas, such as $K$-theory, representation theory, and Lie groups. Also included is a chart of the Adams spectral sequence and a bibliography of Mahowald's publications.

This volume consists of the proceedings of the Third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians, held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2004. The Congress brought together eminent Chinese and overseas mathematicians to discuss the latest developments in pure and applied mathematics. This two-part proceedings contains the contents of lectures given by the plenary speakers and the invited speakers—the major portion comprising new results—together with some expository and survey articles. This book covers a wide range of phenomena in the natural sciences dominated by notions of universality and renormalization. This volume is based on talks given at the Workshop on Categorical Structures for Descent and Galois Theory, Hopf Algebras, and Semiabelian Categories held at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, ON, Canada). The meeting brought together researchers working in these interrelated areas. This collection of survey and research papers gives an up-to-date account of the many current connections among Galois theories, Hopf algebras, and semiabelian categories. The book features articles by leading researchers on a wide range of themes, specifically, abstract Galois theory, Hopf algebras, and categorical structures, in particular quantum categories and higher-dimensional structures. Articles are suitable for graduate students and researchers, specifically those interested in Galois theory and Hopf algebras and their categorical unification.

Although today's mathematical research community takes its international character very much for granted, this “global nature” is relatively recent, having evolved over a period of roughly 150 years—from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. During this time, the practice of mathematics changed from being centered on a collection of disparate national communities to being characterized by an international group of scholars for whom the goal of mathematical research and cooperation transcended national boundaries. Yet, the development of an international community was far from smooth and involved obstacles such as war, political upheaval, and national rivalries. Until now, this evolution has been largely overlooked by historians and mathematicians alike. This book addresses the issue by bringing together essays by twenty experts in the history of mathematics who have investigated the genesis of today's international mathematical community. This includes not only developments within component national mathematical communities, such as the growth of societies and journals, but also more wide-ranging political, philosophical, linguistic, and pedagogical issues. The resulting volume is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of modern mathematics. It will be of interest to mathematicians, historians of mathematics, and historians of science in general.

Let $K$ be a global field, and let $X/K$ be an equidimensional, geometrically reduced projective variety. For an ample line bundle $\overline{\mathcal L}$ on $X$ with norms $\|\ \|_v$ on the spaces of sections $K_v \otimes_K \Gamma(X,\mathcal{L}^{\otimes n})$, we prove the existence of the sectional capacity $S_\gamma(\overline{\mathcal L})$, giving content to a theory proposed by Chinburg. In the language of Arakelov Theory, the quantity $-\log(S_\gamma(\overline{\mathcal L}))$ generalizes the top arithmetic self-intersection number of a metrized line bundle, and the existence of the sectional capacity is equivalent to an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel Theorem for line bundles with singular metrics. In the case where the norms are induced by metrics on the fibres of ${\mathcal L}$, we establish the functoriality of the sectional capacity under base change, pullbacks by finite surjective morphisms, and products. We study the continuity of $S_\gamma(\overline{\mathcal L})$ under variation of the metric and line bundle, and we apply this to show that the notion of $v$-adic sets in $X(\mathbb C_v)$ of capacity $0$ is well-defined. Finally, we show that sectional capacities for arbitrary norms can be well-approximated using objects of finite type.

Symplectic geometry has its origins as a geometric language for classical mechanics. But it has recently exploded into an independent field interconnected with many other areas of mathematics and physics. The goal of the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute Graduate Summer School on Symplectic Geometry and Topology was to give an intensive introduction to these exciting areas of current research. The last ten years have seen a number of significant advances in Hopf algebras. The best known is the introduction of quantum groups, which are Hopf algebras that arose in mathematical physics and now have connections to many areas of mathematics. In addition, several conjectures of Kaplansky have been solved, the most striking of which is a kind of Lagrange's theorem for Hopf algebras. Work on actions of Hopf algebras has unified earlier results on group actions, actions of Lie algebras, and graded algebras. This book brings together many of these recent developments from the viewpoint of the algebraic structure of Hopf algebras and their actions and coactions. Quantum groups are treated as an important example, rather than as an end in themselves. The two introductory chapters review definitions and basic facts; otherwise, most of the material has not previously appeared in book form. Providing an accessible introduction to Hopf algebras, this book would make an excellent graduate textbook for a course in Hopf algebras or an introduction to quantum groups.
