This paper presents thin-loop heat pipes (tLHPs) with evaporator thickness of 1 mm and a one-way transport length of 200 mm. Grooves and liquid cores are mounted on the evaporator case in the design of a flat evaporator. Liquid cores play a critical role in reducing the pressure drop in the wick and in increasing the path length for heat transfer. A one-dimensional steady model was applied to the design of the tLHP. New tLHPs with thin evaporator (26 × 24 × t1 mm³) were fabricated by a three-dimensional printer. First, two kinds of tLHP systems were (type-1) fabricated with different wick materials—microglass paper (MGP) and Shirasu porous glass (SPG). Ethanol was selected as a working fluid. The experimental results showed the both LHPs can transport heat up to 12 W. Second, the evaporator structure was modified based on the experimental results with the type-1 tLHP, and the tLHP with SPG wick (type-2) was fabricated. The experimental results demonstrated the stable operation. The operation temperature was 83 °C, and the thermal resistance became 1.98 °C/W. A loop heat pipe (LHP) is an efficient passive, two-phase heat transfer device which can transport heat up to large distances (over~5 m) even in the anti-gravity mode. It is necessary to miniaturize the LHPs to make them suitable for space-constrained avionics applications. However, before incorporating these devices under high-vibrational environmental conditions such as those encountered in avionics applications, it is imperative to study their thermal performance under such loads. With the aim of understanding the effect of acceleration and frequency of imposed vibration on thermal performance of miniature LHP (mLHP), a contextual experimental study has been reported here using an ammonia charged mLHP (8 mm evaporator diameter; titanium wick) in the horizontal orientation for two cases: (a) without vibration and (b) with the transverse and longitudinal harmonic vibrations (1-4g, frequencies 15-45 Hz, and sine sweep 15-45 Hz in 1 s). With start-up loads between 5 W and 8 W, the LHP can transfer heat load of about 120 W at safe evaporation temperature of 70 °C. Results show that for the transverse vibration, acceleration rate and frequency of imposed vibrations do not affect the thermal performance of mLHP. For the longitudinal vibration, the device performance gets noticeably enhanced with increased acceleration. The decisive role of heat leak (from evaporator to the compensation chamber (CC)) with imposed vibrations is clearly observed, and its link to the internal fluid distribution can be discerned from data trends. This work presents experimental studies of a two-phase loop thermosyphon, designed to use the aircraft fuselage low temperatures at high altitude to promote passive thermal management of electronics components in avionics. The main purpose of this work is to develop the evaporator of a loop thermosyphon composed of one evaporator coupled to two condensers presented in the literature. The proposed evaporator comprises ten square stacked copper plates bonded by diffusion. Channels were manufactured in the inner plates so that internal grooves are obtained after the stack is bonded. Studies with concentrated and distributed heat sources over the evaporator external surface are under performance. A generalized methodology for pinch point design and optimization of subcritical and transcritical organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) using both wet and dry fluids is adopted in this study. The presented algorithm can predict the pinch point location in evaporator and condenser simultaneously and optimize the evaporator pressure for best performance with various heat source and sink conditions. Effects of pinch point temperature difference (PPTD), isentropic efficiency, subcooling, superheating and regenerator on the energy and economic performances are discussed for selected working fluids. System yields similar optimum design for both maximum power generation and minimum capital cost per unit power. At optimum condition, ammonia is best in terms of higher thermal efficiency and lower component size, R152a is best in terms of higher net power output and heat recovery efficiency (11.1%), and toluene is best in terms of lower capital cost and cost per unit power output (7060 $/kW). Effect of heat source and sink parameters on both energy and economic performances is significant. Contour plots are presented to select the best ORC design parameters for available heat source condition. PPTD and expander isentropic efficiency have significant effect on performances. Presented here are the results of an experimental investigation of two ultrathin miniature loop heat pipes (mLHPs) with different internal wicking structures: one with a primary wicking structure in the evaporator and a secondary wicking structure in the liquid line, and the other only with the same primary wicking structure in the evaporator, but no secondary wick. The systematic experimental investigation was conducted using natural convection as the cooling mechanism in order to study the heat transfer performance of the two mLHPs and fully examine the effects of the secondary wick. The results indicated that both of the test articles could effectively dissipate 12 W at all test orientations with a minimum total thermal resistances of 6.38 °C/W and 6.39 °C/W, respectively. However, the results indicated that the presence of the secondary wicking structure in the liquid line at low power loads resulted in more stable startup characteristics and a weaker dependence on the different orientations. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the steady-state evaporator temperatures of the test article with the secondary wicking structure in the liquid line were much lower than those observed for a 1-mm thick copper plate with the same geometric dimensions for all heat loads in the horizontal orientation, showing a higher thermal performance. In this work, parametric analysis of ejector expansion refrigeration cycles (EERC) with two different types of ejectors (constant area (CA) ejector and constant pressure (CP) ejector) is pet formed, and comparison of the results is presented. Effects of variation in operational parameters (condenser temperature, evaporator temperature, and cooling capacity) on coefficient of performance (COP), entrainment ratio (w), and pressure lift factor (Pif) are investigated. The range of variation for evaporator temperature, condenser temperature, and cooling capacity are --5 to 15 °C, 50-70 °C, and 10-80 kW, respectively. The ejector refrigeration cycle is simulated by ees software. The obtained results are validated by the experimental data available in the literature. The refrigerant RI34a is selected based on the merit of its environmental and peiformance characteristics. The results show that the effect of evaporator temperature is much higher than that of condenser temperature on Py. In contrast, the influence of condenser temperature on COP is much stronger than that of evaporator temperature. It is seen that COP and Pif of ejector expansion refrigeration cycle with constant pressure ejector (CP-EERC) are higher than those of refrigeration cycle with constant area ejector. An effectiveness number of transfer units (ε-NTU) model is developed for use in evaporators where the evaporating stream: (1) comprises a volatile solvent and nonvolatile solute( s) and (2) undergoes a significant, but linear change in boiling point elevation (BPE) with increasing solute molality. The model is applicable to evaporators driven by an isothermal stream (e.g., steam-driven or refrigerant-driven) in parallel flow, counterflow, and crossflow configurations where the evaporating stream is mixed. Volume-filling ratio of the working fluid has a predominant effect on the system performance of a closed two-phase solar water-heating (SWH) system. To study this effect, a prototype of a loop thermosyphon SWH system, which uses remolded flat-plate solar collector as the evaporator and the coil pipe in the water tank as the condenser, was set up. A set of long-term outdoor experiments under 10%, 20%, 30%, 50%, and 70% volume-filling ratios were conducted in this paper. R600a was used as working fluid. Loop thermosyphon solar collector thermal performance and system thermal performance under different volume-filling ratios, including the temperature distribution of loop thermosyphon evaporator, were presented. It is shown that the loop thermosyphon solar collector and the system had a better thermal performance than the conventional ones under 30% and 50% volume-filling ratio, and the loop thermosyphon evaporator had an even temperature distribution when the volume-filling ratio was higher than 30%. Improvement of a new design for a capillary pumped loop (CPL) ensuring highdissipation electronics cooling in ground transportation has been carried out over recent years. Experimental studies on the hybrid loop, which share some characteristics with the standard CPL and loop heat pipe (LHP), have underlined the sizable potential of this new system, particularly with regard to its upcoming industrial applications. In order to obtain a reliable tool for sizing and design of this CPL for terrestrial applications (CPLTA), the present transient thermohydraulic modeling has been developed. Based on the nodal method, the model's originality consists of transcribing balance equations under electrical networks by analogy. The model's validation is provided by experimental results from a new CPLTA bench with three parallel evaporators. Large-scale numerical evaluation of loop behavior in a gravity field with a single evaporator shall facilitate understanding of the different couplings between loop parts. A new response surface methodology (RSM) based neural network (NN) modeling method is proposed for finned-tube evaporator performance evaluation under dry and wet conditions. Two RSM designs, Box-Behnken design (BBD) and central composite design (CCD), are applied to collect a small but well-designed dataset for NN training, respectively. Compared with additional 7000 sets of test data, for all the evaporator performance including total cooling capacity, sensible heat ratio and pressure drops on both refrigerant and air sides, the standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of determination of trained NNs are less than 2% and higher than 0.998, respectively, under dry conditions while those are less than 4% and greater than 0.974, respectively, under wet conditions. Classic quadratic polynomial response surface models were also included for reference. By comparison, the proposed model achieves higher accuracy. The effect of fill volume on the heat transfer performance of a hybrid cooling fin thermosyphon, characterized by an airfoil cross-sectional shape and a slot-shaped cavity, is investigated. The performance was examined at three fill volumes, expressed as a percentage of the evaporator section: 0%, 60%, and 240%. These were chosen to represent three distinct regimes: unfilled, filled, and overfilled evaporator sections, respectively. The cross section of this copper-water thermosyphon has a NACA0010 shape with a chord length of 63.5 mm and an aspect ratio (ratio of the length of the evaporator section to the cavity width) of 1.109. The evaporator length comprises 8.3% of the total thermosyphon length. The air-cooled condenser section was placed in a uniform air flow in the test section of an open return wind tunnel. The rate of heat transfer, or peiformance, was measured as a function of fill volume and evaporator temperature. The heat transfer performance increased by 100-170% by adding 0.86 ml of working fluid (de-ionized water), i.e., when the fill volume increased from 0% to 60%, which illustrates the improvement of a cooling fin's heat transfer rate by converting it to a hybrid cooling fin thermosyphon. Of the fill volumes investigated, the thermosyphon achieves a maximum heat transfer rate and highest average surface temperature at the 60% fill volume. Overfilling the evaporator section at 240% fill results in a slight decrease in peiformance from the 60% fill volume. The main motivation of conducting this work is to present a rigorous analysis and investi-gation of the potential effect of the heat pipe adiabatic region on the flow and heat trans-fer performance of a heat pipe under varying evaporator and condenser conditions. A two-dimensional steady-state model for a cylindrical heat pipe coupling, for both regions, is presented, where the flow of the fluid in the porous structure is described by Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model which accounts for the boundary and inertial effects. The model is solved numerically by using the finite volumes method, and a FORTRAN code was developed to solve the system of equations obtained. The results show that a phase change can occur in the adiabatic region due to temperature gradient created in the po-rous structure as the heat input increases and the heat pipe boundary conditions change. A recirculation zone may be created at the condenser end section. The effect of the heat transfer rate on the vapor radial velocities and the peiformance of the heat pipe are discussed. The pressure effects of expanding the cross section of microchannels along the direction of flow are investigated across four rates of channel expansion in the flow boiling of R-134a. Prior investigation by the authors detailed the fabrication of four copper micro-channel arrays and the pumped-loop apparatus developed to facilitate interchange of the microchannel specimens, allowing consistency across experiments. Significant beneficial pressure effects are observed to result from the expansion, including reduction by half of the pumping cost per flow rate at critical heat flux. The improvements are seen with small expansions, and greater expansion yields diminishing returns. The high pressure drops associated with microchannel evaporators are effectively reduced by expanding channel geometry, and the low-frequency system spectral response indicates that expanding chan-nel arrays typically carry less energy in oscillations up to 2.5Hz, suggesting amelioration of oscillatory instabilities. Results are discussed in light of a comparative force analysis, with the balance of these forces linked to the observed behavior of the pressure drop and heat flux relationship. Microchannels have well-known applications in cooling because of their ability to handle large quantities of heat from small areas. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) conduction pump-ing at the microscale has previously been demonstrated to effectively pump dielectric liquids through adiabatic microchannels by using electrodes that are flushed against the walls of the channel. In this study, an EHD micropump is used to pump liquid within a two-phase loop that contains a microchannel evaporator. Additional EHD electrodes are embedded within the evaporator, which can be energized separately from the adiabatic pump. The effect of these embedded electrodes on the heat transport process, flow rate, and pressure in the micro-evaporator and on the two-phase loop system is characterized. Loop heat pipes (LHP) are heat transfer devices which use evaporation and condensation of working fluid to transfer heat and use capillary forces to provide fluid circulation in a closed loop. One of the main applications of LHP is cooling of electronic components. Further development of this field is associated with miniaturization. Thus, there are strict limits imposed upon size of elements of heat transfer devices in electronics cooling. One of such elements is an evaporator of the LHP, its main element. This paper deals with the LHP evaporator and is aimed at showing dependence of wick conductivity, thickness, and vapor flow geometry on overall heat transfer performance. An open loop experimental setup was created. Experiments were carried out with various configurations. The evapo-rator consisted of a microchannel (MC) plate, with groove widths of 100 and 300 pm, wick (metal and nonmetal porous materials were used) and a compensation chamber (CC). Heat load varied from 20 to 140 W in steps of20W. The area of the heater was equal to 19 × 19 mm². The working fluid is de-ionized water. Experimental results include data on temperature distribution across the wick's height, temperature of microchannel's surface, and temperature of water in the compensation chamber. The effect of fill volume on the heat transfer performance of a cylindrical thermosyphon with an aspect ratio (ratio of the length of the evaporator section to the inner diameter) of 2.33 immersed in a cooling air flow is investigated. The fill volume was systematically varied from 0% to 70.3% of the volume of the evaporator section in a copper-water thermosyphon having an inner diameter of 19 mm. The condenser section was immersed in a uniform air flow in the test section of an open return wind tunnel. The heat transfer rate was measured as a function of evaporator temperature and fill volume, and these results were characterized by three distinct regions. From 0% to roughly 16% fill volume (Region I), the low rate of heat transfer, which is insensitive to fill volume, suggests that dry out may be occurring. In Region II (extending to approximately 58% fill volume), the heat transfer rate increases approximately linearly with fill volume, and increasing evaporator temperature results in decreased rate of heat transfer. Finally, in Region 111 (from roughly 58-70.3%), the rate of heat transfer increases more rapidly, though still linearly, with fill volume, and increasing evaporator temperature results in increased rate of heat transfer. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of tube row on surface wetting and heat transfer of a horizontal-tube, falling-film evaporator. Two types of the evaporator tubes were used for comparison: plain copper and copper coated with a microscale porous-layer. Distilled water was used as solution and heating fluids. A visual observation experiment performed in ambient with no heat input showed that when solution fluid was dripped onto the evaporator tubes from a solution dispenser, the plain tubes were partially wetted, while the porous-layer coated tubes were completely wetted due to capillary liquid spreading, even at low solution flow rates. It was found from the heat transfer experiment performed in a closed chamber under saturated conditions that the porous-layer coated tubes exhibited superior evaporation heat transfer (up to 100% overall improvement over the plain tubes at low solution flow rates) due to complete solution wetting and thin-film evaporation. It was also observed that the surface wetting and heat transfer are greatly influenced by both intertube flow mode of solution fluid and tube wall superheat. Calculation of time derivatives of refrigerant pressures is important for dynamic simulation of heat exchangers in vapor compression cycles, i.e., typically the condenser and evaporator. This technical brief presents an experimental study on the pressure transient for the condenser and evaporator of a screw chiller with R134a, along with the analysis for the associated time derivatives. The experimental results from eight test cases suggest that the time derivatives of the condenser and evaporator pressures at their inlet are extremely close to those at the respective outlets. This observation can thus justify the key assumption of equal time derivatives of pressures in the dynamic modeling of heat exchangers, which in consequence improves the numerical efficiency and/or convergence, especially for large and complex thermalfluid systems. In this study, first and second law analyses of a new combined power cycle based on wet ethanol fuelled homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCC1) engine and an organic Rankine cycle are presented. A computational analysis is performed to evaluate first and second law efficiencies, with the latter providing good guidance for performance improvement. The effect of changing turbocharger pressure ratio, organic Rankine cycle (ORC) evaporator pinch point temperature, turbocharger compressor efficiency, and ambient temperature have been observed on cycle's first law efficiency, second law efficiency, and exergy destruction in each of its component. A first law efficiency of 41.5% and second law efficiency of 36.9% were obtained for the operating conditions (T0 = 300 K, rp = 3, ηT= 80%). The first law efficiency and second law efficiency of the combined power cycle significantly val~y with the change in the turbocharger pressure ratio, but the change in pinch point temperature, turbocharger efficiency, and ambient temperature shows small variations in these efficiencies. Second law analysis demonstrates well how the fuel exergy is used, lost, and reused in all of the cycle components. It was found that 78.9% of the total input exergy is lost: 2.0% to the environment in the flue and 76.9% due to irreversibilities in the components. The biggest exergy loss occurs in the HCCI engine which is 68.7%, and the second largest exergy loss occurs in catalytic converter, i.e., nearly 3.13%. Results clearly show that performance evaluation based on first law analysis alone is not adequate, and hence more meaningful evaluation must include second law analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dryout in a heat pipe evaporator is caused by insufficient condensate supply through the wick structure. Diyout is generally considered a failure of the heat pipe operation. However, traditional diyout theoiy may not fully explain the heat and mass transport limitations in the biporous (biwick) wick structure due to new mass transfer mechanisms, such as liquid splash at high heat flux, and vapor bubble/jet occupttion of liquid transport passages. This article investigates the diyout phenomenon in carbon nanotube (CNT) based hiwick structure. The incipience and expansion of the dryout zone on the CNT hiwick structure are visualized. Variation of the evaporator temperatures at various heat fluxes is measured to characterize the temperature responses on the hiwick diyout. Results based on both visualization and measurement show that diyout of CNT hiwick structures is affected by vapor flow induced droplet splash and vapor occupation of liquid transport passages, which reduces the liquid supply to the hottest region and creates a local diy zone. On the curves of heat flux versus the evaporator temperature, diyout can be defined as the appearance of the inflexion point during the heating period, and associated with the existence of a large temperature hysteresis in a heating and cooling cycle. Experimental measurement also shows that over 12% of the liquid by volume is lost without being phase changed, due to high-speed vapor flow induced liquid splash. Liquid splash and interactions between vapor and liquid flows also increase the pressure drop weight in the evaporator over the system loop and result in more notable heating area effect on hiwick structures when compared with traditional monowick structures. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the heat exchanger inventory allocation plays a role in maximizing the thermal performance of a two-stage refrigeration system with two evaporators. First, the system is modeled as a Carnot refrigerator and a particular heat transfer parameter is kept constant as the heat exchanger allocation parameter is allowed to vary. The value of the heat exchanger allocation parameter corresponding to the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) is noted. The results are compared to those of a non-Carnot refrigerator with isentropic and nonisentropic compression. It is found that the Carnot refrigerator can be used to predict the value of the heat exchanger allocation parameter where the maximum COP occurs for a non-Carnot refrigerator. In order to improve the accuracy of that prediction, the predicted value of the heat exchanger allocation parameter has to be inputted into the set of equations used for the non-Carnot refrigerator. An optimization for the geometrical parameters of continuous fins on an array of tubes of a refrigeration evaporator is developed in this paper using the exergy method. The method is based on exergy, economic analysis, and optimization theory. As there are humid air and refrigerant single- and two-phase streams involved in the heat transfer process, then there are irreversibilities or exergy destruction, due to pressure losses İΔP, due to temperature difference İΔT and due to specific humidity gradient İΔω. These principal components of total irreversibility are not independent, and their relative contribution to total irreversibility of a cross-flow refrigeration evaporator is investigated. A change in geometry was obtained by varying the evaporator tube diameter for a selected evaporator capacity, and hence the evaporator tube length and total heat transfer area are calculated for a fixed evaporator face length. In this way, the effect of changes in the geometry on the total number of exergy destruction units of the heat exchange process is investigated. The optimum balance between the three components of irreversibility (İΔP, İΔT, and İΔω) is also determined, thereby giving the optimum solution for the heat exchanger area. The total cost function, which provides a measure of the contribution of the evaporator to the total cost of the refrigeration system, is expressed on the basis of annual capital and electrical energy costs. The total cost function is minimized with respect to the total heat transfer area and the total number of exergy destruction units (NI). The relationship between the operational variables, heat transfer area, refrigerant and air irreversibilities, and the total annual cost for this type of evaporator are developed, presented, and discussed. The pressure, temperature, and specific humidity irreversibilities are found to be 30.34%, 33.78%, and 35.88%, respectively, of the total irreversibility, which is 8.5% of the evaporator capacity. To develop a better defrosting control system on finned evaporators of a refrigeration system, a study is conducted to better quantify the frosting and defrosting processes by using an infrared thermometer to determine the frost surface temperature. For gradual frost deposition a slow variation in surface emissivity is expected, while the defrosting process is characterized by a sudden change of this property. As an indicator for the defrosting initiation control mechanism, the times at which the IR signals stabilize at different conditions (Reynolds number, cold surface temperature, and ambient temperature) are reported along with the terminal mass concentration of a defined frosting process. On the other hand, the abrupt variation of surface emissivity indicates the termination of the defrosting process. Removable fins are used to measure frost weight, and a video microscope is used to determine the frost thickness. Defrosting initiation time and durations marked by melting, temperature are reported as a function of initial mass concentration and defrosting base surface temperature. Capacity control in most commercial centrifugal chillers is achieved kv inlet guide vanes which are activated by the leaving chilled water temperature sensor Due to mechanical reasons, vane control is done discretely, and not continuously. The control module com- pares the value provided by the temperature sensor to pre-set control band values, and if those bands are exceeded, it sends a signal to the vane control motor to adjust the vane position by one step which could be upwards or downwards. The advantage of this type of discrete control method is its simplicity. Normally, the accuracy in the outlet chilled water temperature is of the order of 0.5 °C, which is acceptable for normal cooling plants such as used in office buildings. However, there are applications such as in pharmaceutical processes, mechanics labs; or instances in chemical processes where more accurate control is required (sometimes as low as 0.05 °C). This paper proposes a simple method to achieve such tight control without any hardware modifications. The basis of this method is a transient physical inverse model of the refrigerant boiling process in the evaporator, in conjunction with a feed-forward control scheme, The model parameters need to be identified from monitored data since they are chiller-specific. This paper describes the model, and applies it to one-minute monitored data from an actual chiller plant of 1580 kW (450 Tons). It is demonstrated that for this specific chiller such a control scheme has the potential to improve control accuracy by about 28% as compared to the traditional control method. In the past, virtually all commercial computers were designed to operate at temperatures above the ambient and were primarily air-cooled. However, researchers have always known the advantages of operating electronics at low temperatures. This facilitates faster switching time of semiconductor devices, increased circuit speeds due to lower electrical resistance of interconnecting materials, and reduction in thermally induced failures of devices and components. Depending on the doping characteristics of the chip, performance improvement ranges from 1% to 3% for every 10 °C lower transistor temperature can be realized. The IBM S/390 high-end server system is the first IBM design which uses a conventional refrigeration system to maintain the chip temperatures below that of comparable air-cooled systems, but well above cryogenic temperature. In previous work, the focus was to study the effect of variation of evaporator outlet superheat on the flow through thermostatic expansion valve at varying evaporator temperature. The effect of change in bulb location and effect of bulb time constant on the hunting at the evaporator has been reported. The effect of area contact on the stability of the system is been predicted theoretically. Mechanical analysis is performed in order to check the stresses induced. Two high performance loop heat pipes (LHPs) are developed for direct cooling of the chips in supercomputer. The two LHPs using flat evaporator are: one called water-cooling LHP and another one called air-cooling LHP. The working fluid of LHP is ammonia. The water-cooling LHP can work well at a heat load up to 663 W and air-cooling LHP can work well at a heat load up to 513 W. The two LHPs applying to the real computer servers are realized and tested. The server test results with water-cooling LHP have shown that the operating temperature of central processing units (CPUs) can be controlled to about 67 °C to ensure the reliable operating and acceptable level for electronic chips, even at condenser-cooling water temperature of 40 °C with low water flowrate of 0.055 m3/h. The server test results with air-cooling LHP have shown that the operating temperature of CPUs can be controlled to about 51 °C even at condenser-cooling wind temperature of 30 °C with wind flowrate of 41.88 m³/h. The efficient operation of a solar cooling system strongly depends on the chiller behavior under part load conditions, since driving energy and cooling load are never constant. For this reason, the performance of a single stage, hot water driven 30 kW H2O/LiBr-absorption chiller employed in a solar cooling system with a field of 350 m² evacuated tube collector has been analyzed under part load conditions with both simulations and experiments. A simulation model has been developed for the whole absorption chiller (Type Yazaki WFC-10), where all internal mass and energy balances are solved. The connection to the external heat reservoirs of hot, chilled, and cooling water is done by lumped and distributed UA values for the main heat exchangers. In addition to an analytical evaporator model-which is described in detail-experimental correlations for UA values have been used for the condenser, generator, and solution heat exchanger. For the absorber, a basic model based on the Nusselt theory has been employed. The evaporator model was developed, taking into account the distribution of refrigerant on the tube bundle, as well as the change in operation from a partially dry to an overflowing evaporator. A linear model is derived to calculate the wetted area. The influence of these effects on cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) is calculated for three different combinations of hot and cooling water temperature. The comparison to experimental data shows a good agreement in the various operational modes of the evaporator. The model is able to predict the transition from partially dry to an overflowing evaporator quite well. The present deviations in the domain with high refrigerant overflow can be attributed to the simple absorber model and the linear wetted area model. Presented research is an experimental study of the performance of a standard plate heat exchanger evaporator, both with and without a novel nano- and microporous copper structure, used to enhance the boiling heat transfer mechanism in the refrigerant channel. Various distance frames in the refrigerant channel were also employed to study the influence of the refrigerant mass flux on two-phase flow heat transfer. The tests were conducted at heat fluxes ranging between 4.5 kW/m2 and 17 kW/m2 with 134a as refrigerant. Pool boiling tests of the enhancement structure, under similar conditions and at various surface inclination angles, were also performed for reasons of comparison. The plate heat exchanger with the enhancement structure displayed up to ten times enhanced heat transfer coefficient in the refrigerant channel, resulting in an improvement in the overall heat transfer coefficient with over 100%. This significant boiling enhancement is in agreement with previous pool boiling experiments and confirms that the enhancement structure may be used to enhance the performance of plate heat exchangers. A simple superposition model was used to evaluate the results, and it was found that, primarily, the convective boiling mechanism was affected by the distance frames in the standard heat exchanger. On the other hand, with the enhanced boiling structure, variations in hydraulic diameter in the refrigerant channel caused a significant change in the nucleate boiling mechanism, which accounted for the largest effect on the heat transfer performance. A new desalination scheme has been proposed. The system consists of a saline water tank, a concentrated brine tank, and a fresh water tank placed on ground level plus an evaporator and a condenser located several meters above the ground. The evaporator-condenser assembly, or flash chamber, is initially filled with saline water that later drops by gravity, creating a vacuum above the water surface in the unit without a vacuum pump. The vacuum is maintained by the internal hydrostatic pressure balanced by the atmospheric pressure. The ground tanks are open to the atmosphere, while the flash chamber is insulated and sealed to retain both heat and vacuum. A theoretical simulation of the proposed model was carried out using a detailed model built by employing the fundamental physical and thermodynamic relationships to describe the process and was complimented by reliable empirical correlations to estimate the physical properties of the involved species and the operational parameters of the proposed system. The simulation results show that running the system at higher flash temperatures with a fixed flash chamber size will result in faster vacuum erosion leading to less overall evaporation. Surfaces with topography promote rivulet flow patterns, which are characterized by a high cumulative length of contact lines. This property is very advantageous for evaporators and cooling devices, since the local evaporation rate in the vicinity of contact lines (microregion evaporation) is extremely high. The liquid flow in rivulets is subject to different kinds of instabilities, including the long-wave falling film instability (or the kinematic-wave instability), the capillary instability, and the thermocapillary instability. These instabilities may lead to the development of wavy flow patterns and to the rivulet rupture. We develop a model describing the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in flowing rivulets on surfaces with topography under the action of gravity, surface tension, and thermocapillarity. The contact line behavior is modeled using the disjoining pressure concept. The perfectly wetting case is described using the usual h-3 disjoining pressure. The partially wetting case is modeled using the integrated 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential. The developed model is used for investigating the effects of the surface topography, gravity, thermocapillarity, and the contact line behavior on the rivulet stability. We show that the long-wave thermocapillary instability may lead to splitting of the rivulet into droplets or into several rivulets, depending on the Marangoni number and on the rivulet geometry. The kinematic-wave instability may be completely suppressed in the case of the rivulet flow in a groove. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vapor compression cycle systems using accumulators and receivers inherently operate at or near a transition point involving changes of phase at the heat exchanger outlets. This work introduces a condenser/receiver model and an evaporator/accumulator model developed in the moving-boundary framework. These models use a novel extension of physical variable definitions to account for variations in refrigerant exit phase. System-level model validation results, which demonstrate the validity of the new models, are presented. The model accuracy is improved by recognizing the sensitivity of the models to refrigerant mass flow rate. Miniature loop heat pipes (mLHPs) are coming up with a promising solution for the thermal management of futuristic electronics systems. In order to implement these devices inside compact electronics, their evaporator has to be developed with small thickness while preserving the unique thermal characteristics and physical concept of the loop scheme. This paper specifically addresses the design and testing of a mLHP with a flat evaporator only 5 mm thick for the cooling of high performance microprocessors for electronic devices. A novel concept was used to achieve very small thickness for the mLHP evaporator in which the compensation chamber was positioned on the sides of the wick structure and incorporated in the same plane as the evaporator. This is unlike the conventional design of the flat evaporator for mLHP in which the compensation chamber, as a rule, adds to the overall thickness of the evaporator. The loop was made from copper with water as the heat transfer fluid. For capillary pumping of the working fluid around the loop, a sintered nickel wick with 3-5 µm pore radius and 75% porosity was used. In the horizontal orientation, the device was able to transfer heat fluxes of 50 W/cm² at a distance of up to 150 mm by using a transport line with 2 mm internal diameter. In the range of applied power, the evaporator was able to achieve steady state without any temperature overshoots or symptoms of capillary structure dryouts. For the evaporator and condenser at the same level and under forced air cooling, the minimum value of 0.62°C/W for mLHP thermal resistance from evaporator to condenser (Rec) was achieved at a maximum heat load of 50 W with the corresponding junction temperature of 98.5°C. The total thermal resistance (Rt) of the mLHP was within 1.5-5.23°C/W. At low heat loads, the mLHP showed some thermal and hydraulic oscillations in the transport lines, which were predominately due to the flow instabilities imposed by parasitic heat leaks to the compensation chamber. It is concluded form the outcomes of the present investigation that the proposed design of the mLHP evaporator can be effectively used for the thermal control of the compact electronic devices with high heat flux capabilities. The article reports on implicit quasi-steady-state approximation and application to a power plant evaporator. The construction of reduced order models using quasi-steady-state or singular perturbation approach can hardly offer good low frequency approximations. An implicit quasi-steady-state technique is planned for general nonlinear models. The resulting reduced order model is exact to first order in the perturbation parameter and its linearization is correct to first order in frequency.

The concept of disjoining pressure, developed from thermodynamic and hydrodynamic analysis, has been widely used as a means of modeling the liquid-solid molecular force interactions in an ultra-thin liquid film on a solid surface. In particular, this approach has been extensively used in models of thin film transport in passages in micro evaporators and micro heat pipes. In this investigation, hybrid μPT molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to predict the pressure field and film thermophysics for an argon film on a metal surface. The results of the simulations are compared with predictions of the classic thermodynamic disjoining pressure model and the Born-Green-Yvon (BGY) equation. The thermodynamic model provides only a prediction of the relation between vapor pressure and film thickness for a specified temperature. The MD simulations provide a detailed prediction of the density and pressure variation in the liquid film, as well as a prediction of the variation of the equilibrium vapor pressure variation with temperature and film thickness. Comparisons indicate that the predicted variations of vapor pressure with thickness for the three models are in close agreement. In addition, the density profile layering predicted by the MD simulations is in qualitative agreement with BGY results, however the exact density profile is dependent upon simulation parameters. Furthermore, the disjoining pressure effect predicted by MD simulations is strongly influenced by the allowable propagation time of injected molecules through the vapor region in the simulation domain. A modified thermodynamic model is developed that suggests that presence of a wall-affected layer tends to enhance the reduction of the equilibrium vapor pressure. However, the MD simulation results imply that presence of a wall layer has little effect on the vapor pressure. Implications of the MD simulation predictions for thin film transport in micro evaporators and heat pipes are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the successful amalgamation of the thermoelectric and the adsorption cycles into a combined electro-adsorption chiller (EAC). The symbiotic union produces an efficiency or COP (coefficient of performance) more than threefold when compared with their individual cycles. The experiments conducted on the bench-scale prototype show that it can meet high cooling loads, typically 120 W with an evaporator foot print of 25 cm², that is 5 W/cm² at the heated surface temperature of 22°C, which is well below that of the room temperature. The COPs of the EAC chiller vary from 0.7 to 0.8, which is comparable to the theoretical maximum of about 1.1 at the same operating conditions. With a copper-foam cladded evaporator, the high cooling rates have been achieved with a low temperature difference. In addition to meeting high cooling rates, the EAC is unique as (i) it has almost no moving parts and hence has silent operation, (ii) it is environmentally friendly as it uses a nonharmful adsorbent (silica gel), and (iii) water is used as the refrigerant.
