The strengthening effect of precipitates in metals is investigated within a multiscale approach that utilizes models of various length scales; namely, molecular mechanics (MM), discrete dislocation dynamics (DD), and an equivalent inclusion method (EIM). In particular, precipitates are modeled as particles whose stress fields interact with dislocations. The stress field resulting from the elastic mismatch between the particles and the matrix is accounted for by using the EIM, whereas the MM method is employed to develop rules for the DD method for short range interactions between a single dislocation and an inclusion. The DD method is used to predict the strength of the composite structure resulting from the interaction between ensembles of dislocations and particles. This paper presents the development of a methodology for microstructure analysis and modeling of hot mix asphalt (HMA). This methodology relies on using effective local material properties and strain gradient theory in the finite element analysis of HMA microstructure. The effective local properties are calculated using an analytical micromechanical model that captures the influence of percent of particles on the microscopic response of HMA. Strain gradient elasticity is used in order to account for the effect of particle size in the finite element analysis. The autocorrelation function and the moving window technique are used to determine the microstructure characteristic length scales that are used in strain gradient elasticity. A number of asphalt mixes with different aggregate types and size distributions are analyzed in this paper.

Permanent deformation is one of the major distresses in asphalt pavements. It is caused mainly by high traffic loads associated with high field temperatures. An anisotropic viscoplastic continuum damage model is developed in this study to describe permanent deformation of asphalt pavements. The model is based on Perzyna's formulation with Drucker-Prager yield function modified to account for material anisotropy and microstructure damage. The material anisotropy is captured through microstructural analysis of aggregate distribution on two-dimensional sections of hot mix asphalt. A damage parameter is included in the model to quantify the nucleation of cracks and growth of air voids and cracks. A parametric study was conducted to demonstrate the sensitivity of the model to strain rate, aggregate distribution, and microstructure damage. Triaxial strength and static creep measurements obtained from the Federal Highway Administration Accelerated Loading Facility were used to determine the model parameters.
