Pile drivability predictions require information on the pile geometry, impact hammer, and the soil resistance to driving (SRD). Current SRD prediction methods are based on databases of long slender piles from the oil and gas industry and new, robust, and adaptable methods are required to predict SRD for current offshore pile geometries. This paper describes an optimization framework to update uncertain model parameters in existing axial static design methods to calibrate SRD. The approach is demonstrated using a case study from a German offshore wind site. The optimization process is undertaken using a robust Bayesian approach to dynamically update uncertain variables during driving to improve simulations. The existing method is shown to perform well for piles with geometries that reflect the underlying database such that only minimal optimization is required. For larger diameter piles, relative to the prior best estimate, optimized results are shown to provide significant improvements in the mean calculations and associated variance of pile drivability as more data is acquired. The optimized parameters can be used to predict SRD for similar piles in analogous ground conditions. The demonstrated framework is adaptable and can be used to develop site-specific calibrations and advance new SRD methods where large pile driving data sets are available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Design codes vary in their recommendations for the end-bearing response for bored piles founded in sand, both for the ultimate design value and the response at small settlements. The ultimate end-bearing resistance may be expressed either in terms of bearing factors Nq relative to the in situ vertical effective stress, with the Nq value varying with the friction angle of the sand, or as a factor applied to in situ test data, such as the standard penetration test blow count or the tip resistance qc. Numerical studies have led to proposed ratios of design end-bearing pressure to qc at specific settlement ratios, such as 5% and 10% of the pile diameter. The work presented here used numerical analysis to evaluate the full pile base response from initial stiffness to ultimate end-bearing resistance at a settlement ratio of 10% of the pile diameter. The resulting base responses are suitable for implementation in beam column analyses and have been validated by comparison with published design guidelines and with data from a full-scale instrumented pile load test. A number of incidents of pile tip damage and extrusion buckling have been reported within the offshore industry, generally arising during driving of relatively thin-walled tubular pile foundations through hard layers or potentially heterogeneous sediments. The issue has become of particular concern with modern trends toward larger diameter piles, with higher ratios of diameter to wall thickness, for monopile or jacket foundations of offshore wind turbines. The paucity of good-quality data available in the public domain about this kind of failure has impaired the development of simple design guidelines for industry to address the issue. The paper presents results from a series of centrifuge model tests where pile tip damage and extrusion buckling were observed during driving of either (1) undamaged cylindrical piles into a sand bed containing a layer of different sizes of boulders, or (2) predented piles into medium dense homogeneous sand. Following a previously reported pilot study, a new and higher energy model pile-driving hammer was designed to permit driving through the hard layers and allow pile embedment by up to five diameters. Two test beds were prepared, one of which contained boulder layers of different sizes either near the surface or at a depth of about one pile diameter, into which piles of two different diameter to wall thickness ratios were driven. The test series led to observations of pile tip damage that ranged from abrupt tip crumpling to gradual extrusion buckling. For 2 of the 22 piles installed, dent growth during installation was detected by optical fiber sensors attached to the piles. For the uninstrumented piles, damage was deduced from the trends in blow counts during installation, with later confirmation from detailed visual inspections and laser scanning, and also from careful layer by layer excavation of each sample. The high-quality database generated from the model tests forms a valuable resource for further study and validation of advanced numerical models to simulate pile tip damage and for calibration of simple guidelines for practical design. A manually operated penetrometer (DMS) fitted with cylindrical (T-bar) and ball penetrometer tips was developed for measuring the profiles of undisturbed and remolded undrained shear strength within box-core samples. This paper summarizes the findings of a series of miniature penetrometer tests and vane shear tests that were carried out on reconstituted clay from a local site in Western Australia. The aim of the tests was to evaluate the potential of the DMS in characterizing the shear strength of seabed surficial sediments. It was found that the DMS gave essentially identical T-bar and ball penetration resistances but these were up to 17% lower than the net cone resistance. From the comparison between the T-bar and ball penetration resistance and the shear strengths measured from vane shear tests, average N factors of 11 and 14 were obtained for intact and fully remolded conditions, respectively. The test results suggest that the DMS is a reliable and efficient means of obtaining intact and remolded shear strength profiles. Pipelines are frequently subjected to active loading from slide events both on land and in the offshore environment. Whether the pipeline is initially buried or lying close to the surface, and whether it crosses the unstable region or lies in the path of debris originating from further away, the main principles are unchanged. The pipeline will be subjected to active loading over some defined length, related to the width of the slide, and as it deforms will be restrained by transverse and longitudinal resistance in adjacent passive zones. Ultimately the pipeline may come to a stable deformed shape where the continued active loading from the slide is equilibrated by the membrane tension in the pipeline in addition to the passive resistance. This problem has been explored by various writers and these principles are well established. However, to date no attempt has been made to develop a standard set of parametric solutions, which is the purpose of the current paper. Both analytical and numerical solutions of the problem have been developed, initially for slides acting normal to the pipeline but later extended to general conditions with the slide impacting the pipeline at some angle. It is shown that analytical solutions based on certain idealizations maintain their accuracy over a wide parameter range, and the net effect of the slide in terms of stresses induced in the pipe wall and maximum displacement of the pipeline may be captured in appropriate dimensionless groups. Design charts are presented for slide widths of up to 10,000 times the pipeline diameter for a practical range of other parameters such as the ratios of passive normal and frictional resistance to the active loading. Although the solutions are limited by some of the idealizations, they should provide a useful starting point in design, providing a framework for a more detailed numerical analysis for the particular governing conditions. Three-dimensional large deformation finite-element (FE) analyses were performed to investigate plate anchor capacity during vertical pullout. The remeshing and interpolation technique with small strain approach was expanded from two-dimensional to threedimensional conditions and coupled with the FE software, ABAQUS. A modified recovery of equilibrium in patches technique was developed to map stresses after each remeshing. Continuous pullout of rectangular plate anchors was simulated and the large deformation results for strip, circular, and rectangular anchors were compared with model test data, small strain FE results, and plastic limit solutions. Interface conditions of no breakaway (bonded) and immediate breakaway (no tension) were considered at the anchor base. The effects of anchor roughness, aspect ratio, soil properties, and soil overburden pressure were investigated. It was found that the anchor roughness had minimal effect on anchor performance. For square and circular deep anchors under immediate breakaway conditions, the maximum uplift capacity increased with soil elastic modulus, which suggests that lower bound limit analysis and small strain FE analysis may overestimate the capacity. The soil beneath the anchor base separates from the anchor at a certain embedment depth near the mudline, once tensile stresses were generated. The ratio of separation depth to anchor width was found to increase linearly with the ratio of soil undrained shear strength to the product of soil effective unit weight and anchor width and was independent of the initial anchor embedment depth. Vertically installed plate anchors have been investigated in this paper by numerical analysis and centrifuge modeling. In the numerical analysis, the large deformation finite-element method (remeshing and interpolation technique with small strain) was used to simulate strip plate anchor rotation. In the centrifuge model tests, transparent soils were used to observe square anchor rotation. The loss in anchor embedment during anchor keying was assessed for anchors in uniform and normally consolidated soils with anchor pullout angle varying from 30[degrees] to 90[degrees] to the horizontal. It was found that the loss in anchor embedment during anchor keying may be expressed in terms of a nondimensional anchor geometry factor, which is a function of the eccentricity of the padeye, angle of loading, and the net moment applied to the anchor at the stage where the applied load balances the anchor weight. However, once the anchor geometry factor reaches a certain value, the loss in anchor embedment stabilizes at 0.25-0.5 times the anchor width. The loss in anchor embedment decreases linearly with decreasing pullout angle. Simple formulae and design procedures have been proposed to estimate the loss in anchor embedment during keying. Spudcan foundations for offshore mobile drilling rigs are large saucer-shaped foundations that can penetrate several tens of meters into soft sediments. The penetration depth is typically predicted by considering a wished-in-place foundation at different depths and following traditional bearing capacity approaches to assess the depth at which the estimated capacity matches the applied loading. However, the geometry of the spudcan and its progressive mode of penetration lead to soil failure mechanisms that differ markedly from those relevant to onshore practice. This paper presents a new rational design approach for assessing spudcan penetration in single layer clays based on a study combining centrifuge model testing and large deformation finite-element (FE) analysis. The design approach takes account of the evolving failure mechanisms in the soil, which start with cavity formation and surface heave at shallow penetration, gradually transforming to backflow of soil over the spudcan. A detailed FE parametric study has explored the relevant range of normalized strength, strength nonhomogeneity, and spudcan base roughness, with results validated against centrifuge model test data. The penetration response curves are presented in terms of profiles of bearing capacity factors, forming nondimensional design charts along with simplified expressions for convenient use in practice. Comparisons with approaches suggested in the SNAME design code suggest an urgent need to update current practice. The undrained remolded shear strength of soft clays is of importance in geosystem design, particularly for offshore structures. Common methods to estimate remolded shear strength, such as correlations with cone penetration data, direct measurement with an in situ field vane shear device, and laboratory measurements, produce varied results and can be particularly costly and time consuming. Full-flow penetrometers (T-bar and Ball) provide an alternative rapid method to estimate remolded shear strength and soil sensitivity through remolding soil by repeated cycling of the penetrometer up and down over a given depth interval. The cyclic penetration resistance degradation curve inherently contains information regarding remolded strength and sensitivity. The objective of this paper is to assess the ability of full-flow penetrometers to predict remolded strength and soil sensitivity, and to develop a suite of predictive correlations in which these properties can be estimated in the absence of complementary laboratory or in situ test data. To accomplish this, full-flow penetration profiles and cyclic tests were performed at five well characterized soft clay sites, which together represent the broad range of soils in which the penetrometers will be often used. A previously developed model for the reduction in penetration resistance with cycling is modified to predict the entire degradation curve, including the remolded penetration resistance using only measurements obtained during initial penetrometer penetration and extraction. Using field vane shear strength as the reference measurement, correlations are developed to predict soil sensitivity and remolded shear strength based solely on full-flow penetrometer data, which is particularly useful in site investigation programs where site specific data are not yet available or are sparse. This paper presents a numerical investigation of the effect of foundation size on the response of shallow circular foundations on siliceous and calcareous sands. The study is based on the predictive capabilities of the MIT-S1 soil model for simulating both the compression and shear behaviors of natural sands over a wide range of densities, [K.sub.0] values and confining pressures. The paper highlights the variations in the deformation mechanisms for the siliceous and calcareous sands cases. The assessment of the bearing capacity factor, [N.sub.[gamma]], is examined, showing a dramatic decrease in the values with increasing foundation size for the case of footings on calcareous sands, eventually converging to a terminal [N.sub.[gamma]] value. At this stage the sand resistance is insensitive to variations in initial density and foundation size because the sand tends to loose its initial characteristics due to grain crushing, leading the material rapidly toward ultimate conditions. In the silicious sand case, it is found that, eventually, for extremely large footing diameters, the deformation mechanism progresses toward a punching shear mechanism, rather than the classical rapture pattern accompanied by surface heave as employed in current bearing capacity equations. A dimensional transition between the failure mechanisms can clearly be defined, referred to as a 'critical size' in the [N.sub.[gamma]]-D relationship. A CPT-based method is presented for estimating the self-weight penetration and suction required during the installation of suction caissons in medium dense to dense sand. Existing methods, although fundamental in nature, suffer from the difficulty in estimating key input parameters such as an appropriate bearing factor for the tip resistance and frictional coefficients for skirt friction. Instead, the proposed method is based directly on the cone resistance profile, starting with the Det norske Veritas approach for calculating the installation resistance of skirted foundations. The approach is modified to include a simple linear reduction in end beating on the skirt tips and internal friction with the level of suction, with those components of resistance assumed to reduce to zero once the suction reaches the critical level corresponding to hydraulic failure of the soil plug. The method is coupled with a seepage model so that, for a given pumping rate, the penetration and corresponding resistance can both be expressed as a function of time. Results of calculations with this complete model are shown to compare well with data from centrifuge model tests and with published data from suction caisson installations. Layered soil conditions are common in marine sediments, and deduction of strength properties for thin interbedded layers is often challenging. Full-flow penetrometers such as T-bar are increasingly being used in offshore site investigations and show high potential for differentiating the shear strength transition between layers. This paper reports the results from large deformation finite-element analysis undertaken to provide insight into the response of a T-bar penetrometer as it continuously penetrates through stiff–soft–stiff clay layers. The numerical results are validated against data from a centrifuge model test. Trapped soil is observed for any nonsmooth interface as the T-bar penetrates from a stiff to a softer soil layer, which affects the measured resistance of the soft layer. The effect of a cavity above the advancing T-bar was also investigated. The presence of a cavity can increase the sharpness of the transition in resistance from one layer to another, which thus affects estimation of the boundary of the soft layer. The evolution of trapped soil from the top layer within the soft layer, and then its erosion in the bottom layer, were explored. The research found that the measured resistance profile in the soft layer is sensitive to the strength ratio between the top layer and soft layer, but the resistance of the bottom layer is more reliable. Based on deduced measurement parameters from the resistance profile, a new interpretation framework is proposed for interpreting the layer boundaries and undrained shear strength of the interbedded soft layer. This paper discusses the development of a framework for classifying soil using normalized piezocone test (CPTU) data from the corrected tip resistance ([q.sub.t]) and penetration pore-water pressure at the shoulder ([u.sub.2]). Parametric studies for normalized cone tip resistance (Q = [q.sub.cnet]/[[sigma]'.sub.v0]) and normalized excess pressures ([DELTA][u.sub.2]/[[sigma]'.sub.v0]) as a function of overconsolidation ratio (OCR=[[sigma]'.sub.vy]/[[sigma]'.sub.v0]) during undrained penetration are combined with piezocone data from clay sites, as well as results from relatively uniform thick deposits of sands, silts, and varietal clays from around the globe. The study focuses on separating the influence of yield stress ratio from that of partial consolidation on normalized CPTU parameters, which both tend to increase Q and decrease the pore pressure parameter ([B.sub.q] = [DELTA][u.sub.2]/[q.sub.cnet]). The resulting recommended classification chart is significantly different from existing charts, and implies that assessment of data in Q-[DELTA][u.sub.2]/[[sigma]'.sub.v0] space is superior to Q-[B.sub.q] space when evaluating piezocone data for a range of soil types. Still, there are zones of overlap for silty soils and heavily overconsolidated clays, thus requiring that supplementary information to Q and [DELTA][u.sub.2]/[[sigma]'.sub.v0] be obtained in unfamiliar geologies, including variable rate penetration tests, dissipation tests, CPT friction ratio, or soil sampling. The behavior of strip and circular plate anchors during vertical pullout in uniform and normally consolidated clays was studied in this paper by means of small strain and large deformation finite-element analyses. Both fully bonded (attached), and 'vented' (no suction on rear face), anchors were considered. The current numerical results were compared with existing laboratory test data, finite-element results, and analytical solutions. This study showed that, in small strain analysis, the scatter of existing data was mainly due to the effect of soil stiffness. In large deformation analysis, when soil and anchor base were attached with suction, the pullout capacity factor formed a unique curve independent of the soil strength ([s.sub.u]), soil effective unit weight ([gamma]') and anchor size (B=width of strip anchor and D=diameter of circular anchor). The transitional embedment depth ratio, [H.sub.SD]/B or [H.sub.SD]/D, (where [H.sub.SD]=transition depth between shallow and deep embedment) was 1.4 for a strip anchor and 0.75 for a circular anchor. The ultimate pullout capacity factors ([N.sub.c]) for deep embedment were 11.6 and 11.7 for smooth and rough strip anchors and 13.1 and 13.7 for smooth and rough circular anchors, respectively. However, when the anchor base was vented, the soil stayed attached to the anchor base for deep embedment, and the pullout capacity was therefore the same as for the attached anchor. The study is on the electrokinetic strengthening of caisson anchors embedded in offshore calcareous sand. The effects of electrode configuration on the effectiveness of electrokinetic treatment are investigated based on electric field analysis and are verified by results from a series of large scale laboratory tests on caisson models of 200 mm diam and 400 mm height, embedded in calcareous sand submerged under seawater. The electrokinetic treatment generates cementation of soil solids as well as bonding between soil and caisson shafts, which leads to increases in the side resistance and overall pullout resistance. The effectiveness of electrokinetic treatment is directly related to the electric field intensity. A linear relationship is observed between the increase in the side resistance and energy consumption. The study shows that the effectiveness of electrokinetic treatments can be maximized by the optimization of the electric field distribution through the electrode configuration. Suction caissons are increasingly being used for offshore anchors because of their ease of installation. However, for soil profiles that have sand overlain by layers of silt, there are reasons to believe that it may not be possible to install suction caissons. This may happen because the low permeability of the silt will create a hydraulic blockage, and thus diminish the upward hydraulic gradient required to reduce the penetration resistance in the sand to enable caisson penetration. The tendency of the silt to be sucked up, and its effect on the underlying sand, are not clearly understood. Furthermore, the blockage by the silt layer may be less than if a clay layer is present. This is because scouring of the silt may occur, allowing an upward seepage gradient to develop, and hence causing a reduction in penetration resistance. A series of suction caisson installation tests have been conducted in a geotechnical centrifuge to provide data on the penetration resistance and mechanisms for soil profiles where silt layers are present, either on top, or interbedded between layers of sand. In these tests, the thickness of the silt layer and its depth below the sand surface have also been varied. It has been found that if silt overlies the sand, a larger suction force is required for installation than when installation occurs in homogeneous sand, but that this force is still much smaller than the soil resistance when the caisson is pushed into the ground. When a silt layer is present, the suction pressures are observed to follow a similar trend that is independent of the position and thickness of the silt layer. Scouring of silt was evident in the tests, and significant upward movement of the soil plug inside the caisson was observed in all soil profiles when silt layers were present. The plug height was seen to reduce after the suction was turned off, suggesting that the resulting heave was unstable. This paper discusses the effects of penetration rate on the penetration resistance in soft clay for various shaped penetrometers (cone, T-bar, ball, and plate) and for T-bars with different aspect ratios. Constant rate ('normal') and variable rate ('twitch') penetration tests, where the penetration rate was successively halved over eight steps with the penetrometer advanced by one or two diameters in each step, were undertaken in the beam centrifuge at the University of Western Australia. The tests were conducted on samples reconstituted from clay collected from the Burswood site in Western Australia. The twitch tests showed higher penetration resistance than the corresponding normal tests after the penetration rate had been reduced by a factor of 16 due to cumulative effects of partial consolidation. The penetration rate at which the resistance started to increase due to partial consolidation was used to estimate the consolidation coefficient, [c.sub.v], of the reconstituted clay. The interpreted [c.sub.v] values were similar to values estimated from other consolidation data, both in the centrifuge and from laboratory Rowe cell and constant rate of strain consolidation tests. In addition, results from in situ twitch tests at the Burswood site were examined to evaluate viscous effects on the penetration resistance. There is little information in the geotechnical literature regarding the influence of the type of cement on the engineering behavior of cemented soils. This paper explores the mechanical behavior of a calcareous soil under triaxial loading after treatment with different types of cement, namely Portland cement, gypsum, and calcite. To identify the specific effects of each cement type a parametric study was undertaken, where factors such as density and unconfined compressive strength were maintained constant for each cementing agent. Samples of the cemented soil were examined under optical and electron microscopy to understand the bond mechanism created by each cement. Results from triaxial testing have shown that, despite having the same unconfined compressive strength and density, the effective stress paths and postyield response are significantly different, mainly because of the different volumetric response upon shearing. Samples prepared using Portland cement showed ductile yield and strong dilation afterwards; calcite and gypsum-cemented samples exhibited brittle yield, generally followed by contractive behavior. The results of centrifuge modeling of pipe-soil interaction for shallowly embedded offshore pipelines are presented. A non-associated bounding surface model is constructed in vertical-horizontal (V-H) load space on the basis of test data and the theory of plasticity to simulate the response of a pipeline embedded in sandy soil under combined (vertical and horizontal) monotonic loading, taking into account possible pre-loading effects. The model needs nine parameters that can be back calculated from model or field tests and in some cases estimated theoretically. It provides a suitable basis for modeling the load-displacement response of shallowly embedded offshore pipelines. The model reproduces the key features of the load-displacement response of pipelines observed in centrifuge model tests. In particular, the adoption of bounding surface plasticity allows a gradual transition from elastic to plastic response to be simulated and the introduction of a non-associated flow rule allows the model to predict the strain-softening behavior of pipes under horizontal loading. Recent research on the topic of pile base resistance has demonstrated that the guidelines provided by existing design manuals and codes are rather conservative in the case of clayey soils under undrained conditions. With the aim of investigating this topic more rigorously, a computationally intensive study was carried out to quantify the effect of the soil rigidity index on the response of pile base resistance. A precise assessment of the results led to the formulation of hyperbolic relationships that capture the development of the base resistance as a function of settlement. The relationships were implemented in a beam column analysis and validated against a full axisymmetric numerical analysis and also with respect to field data from a pile test performed using an Osterberg cell near the pile base. The validation process demonstrated the usefulness of the method and recommendations arising with respect to mobilization of the pile base resistance. Finite element analysis of dynamic foundation problems requires the use of transmitting boundaries to model the radiation of waves from the finite element mesh into the far field. Problems involving inelastic behavior of the soil in the near field are most readily solved in the time domain. The standard viscous boundary is widely used in such situations. However, in axisymmetric situations this boundary is inappropriate. This paper develops plane strain boundary equations for axisymmetric shear and dilation waves based on an approximation of the form of the outward traveling waves. These boundary equations are shown to be equivalent to mechanical systems with frequency independent components. The complex stiffnesses of the new boundaries are compared with the equivalent viscous and plane strain boundary stiffnesses, and the new boundaries are found to agree closely with the plane strain boundaries. The response of an extended axisymmetric finite element mesh subjected to a transient force of the type generated by pile hammers is computed and compared to the responses of the same mesh truncated with various transmitting boundaries.

In most soil types, it is generally assumed that the shaft capacity of a pile is identical under both tensile and compressive loading. However, there is widespread experimental evidence that in sand the shaft capacity is significantly lower for tensile loading, or uplift, than for compressive loading. This paper describes the results of a parametric study that was conducted to explore the theoretical basis for such differences. It is shown that the primary cause of lower tensile capacity is due to a Poisson's ratio effect, and that the ratio of tensile to compressive shaft capacity may be expressed as a function of the relative compressibility of the pile and the slenderness ratio. Design recommendations are proposed, and corroborated with results from high-quality field tests.

The piled raft is a geotechnical composite construction, consisting of the three elements piles, raft, and soil, which is applied for the foundation of tall buildings in an increasing number. In a parametric study, 259 different piled raft configurations have been analyzed by means of three-dimensional elastoplastic finite element analyses. In the study, the pile positions, the pile number, the pile length, and the raft-soil stiffness ratio as well as the load distribution on the raft has been varied. In the scope of this paper, the results of the parametric study are presented and design strategies for an optimized design of piled rafts subjected to nonuniform vertical loading are discussed. This technical note presents simplified parametric solutions for the axial response of surface-laid submarine pipelines subjected to axial drag from debris flows. In assessing the response of pipelines impacted by debris flow emanating from a submarine landslide, both normal and axial responses must be considered. Previous work has indicated that these can be decoupled, at least as a first-stage analysis. The most critical aspect of axial drag is the potential for the pipeline to buckle. However, to make preliminary estimates of displacements and forces along the pipeline prior to buckling, simple assumptions of elastic pipeline response with elastic perfectly plastic interaction with the seabed are justified. These allow the development of parametric solutions that contain only three nondimensional quantities. Field observations of semitaut mooring systems have shown severe trench development in front of suction caissons. Trenches extend back from where the chain emerges from the seabed under ambient mooring loads to relatively close to the caisson and with depths approaching the padeye depth. To help understand the process, a coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) approach has been used to apply cyclic loading to a mooring chain system, treating the chain as a series of linked cylindrical elements and the soil as a strain-softening Tresca material. The chain extended through the soil into the water column, and cyclically changing boundary conditions were applied to the far end of the chain to reflect a typical mooring layout and metocean conditions. Despite rather idealized conditions, with loading restricted to the vertical plane of the chain and no consideration of hydrodynamic effects, a stable trench profile developed after only a few cycles of loading. The chain profile straightened during the cycles, with the section nearest to the padeye gradually cutting deeper into the soil and with the amplitude of cyclic motions of the chain, and hence tendency for a trench to form, increasing at shallower depths. The magnitude of soil resistance acting on the chain reduced by increasing cycles, with particularly low resistance in the zone where the trench was most developed. The long-term longitudinal profile of trenching was predicted based on the current modeling and was found comparable to that inferred from field observations, even without consideration of hydrodynamic and out-of-plane effects. This paper reports the use of optical fiber Bragg-grating (FBG) sensors to monitor the stress waves generated below ground during pile driving, combined with measurements using conventional pile driving analyzer (PDA) sensors mounted at the pile head. Fourteen tubular steel piles with a diameter of 508 mm and embedded length-to-diameter ratios of 6∶20 were impact driven at an established chalk test site in Kent, United Kingdom. The pile shafts were instrumented with multiple FBG strain gauges and pile head PDA sensors, which monitored the piles' responses under each hammer blow. A high-frequency (5 kHz) fiber optic interrogator allowed a previously unseen resolution of the stress wave propagation along the pile. Estimates of the base soil resistances to driving and distributions of shaft shear resistances were found through signal matching that compared the time series of pile head PDA measurements and FBG strains measured below the ground surface. Numerical solutions of the one-dimensional wave equation were optimized by taking account of the data from multiple FBG gauges, leading to significant advantages that have potential for widespread application in cases where high-resolution strain measurements are made. This paper focuses on elastic stiffness parameters for axial, horizontal, and vertical motions of a pipeline relative to the seabed, with the aim of expressing these parameters in terms of fundamental elastic properties of the soil. Limited information exists in the literature on the axial elastic response of on-bottom pipelines, particularly for nonhomogeneous soil. Therefore, an approximate analytical approach was developed for axial stiffness, focusing on the case of shear modulus proportional to depth. The solution was then verified through numerical analysis. Further numerical analysis was carried out to obtain relationships for horizontal and vertical elastic stiffnesses of on-bottom pipelines. Finally, relationships among elastic stiffnesses were developed. Here recommendations are made for the selection of proper elastic stiffnesses in all three directions of motion. These recommendations allow consistent and rigorous modeling of elastic pipe-seabed interactions with application to the analysis of pipeline laying, buckling, walking, and on-bottom stability. This paper reports advances in the prediction of spudcan resistance profiles during installation and preloading, based on the soil flow mechanisms observed in model tests and numerical analysis, and taking into account strain softening and rate dependency on the soil strength. Deep penetration of spudcan foundations was simulated for 14 case histories reported from different locations in the Gulf of Mexico, where the soils were single layer, predominantly normally to lightly overconsolidated clay. Axisymmetric and three-dimensional analyses were carried out using two large deformation finite-element (LDFE) approaches, modifying the simple elastic-perfectly plastic Tresca soil model to allow strain softening and strain-rate dependency of the shear strength. The field data were compared with the results of the finite-element analyses and with predictions using various design approaches. Excellent agreement was found, particularly when a mechanism-based design approach was used that differentiated between conditions before and after backflow of soil above the penetrating spudcan. Partial drainage during a penetration test increases the penetration resistance, and also affects the excess pore pressures generated and the form of any subsequent dissipation test. This complicates interpretation of such tests, particularly in soils of intermediate consolidation characteristics, because it is difficult to obtain an accurate estimate of the coefficient of consolidation from which to assess the degree of consolidation during penetration. The effect of partial consolidation during penetration on subsequent dissipation tests is investigated here through a number of model piezocone and piezoball tests conducted in a single soil sample under centrifuge conditions. Backbone curves of penetration resistance and excess pore pressure are devised, and comparisons are made of the form of the dissipation response for the two types of penetrometers and for two different pore pressure monitoring positions on the piezoball. Different methods are proposed for assessing the degree of consolidation during the penetration phase, thus allowing the consolidation coefficient to be estimated with reasonable accuracy. Large-deformation finite-element analysis has been used to model the undrained response of skirted shallow foundations in uplift and compression. Large-deformation effects involve changes in embedment ratio and operative local soil shear strength with increasing foundation displacement--either in tension or compression. Centrifuge model testing has shown that these changes in geometry affect the mobilized bearing capacity and the kinematic mechanisms governing failure in undrained uplift and compression. Small-strain finite-element analysis cannot by definition capture the effects of changing foundation embedment ratio and variation in local soil strength with foundation displacement. In this paper, load-displacement relationships, ultimate capacities, and kinematic mechanisms governing failure from large-deformation finite-element analyses are compared with centrifuge model test results for circular skirted foundations with a range of embedment between 10 and 50% of the foundation diameter. The results show that the large-deformation finite-element method can replicate the load-displacement response of the foundations over large displacements, pre- and postyield, and also capture differences in the soil deformation patterns in uplift and compression. The findings from this study increase confidence in using advanced numerical methods for determining shallow skirted foundation behavior, particularly for load paths involving uplift. One of the critical issues associated with plate anchor performance and design relates to the reduction of the loss of embedment during the keying process. As deep water offshore sediments typically exhibit an increasing soil strength with depth, the loss of embedment results in a reduction in anchor bearing capacity. A keying flap hinged to the main plate has been developed and adopted by industry with the aim to reduce the loss of embedment by limiting the vertical motion of the anchor. However, uncertainties remain regarding the behavior and the performance of the keying flap. This paper presents a series of numerical analyses performed to investigate the flap rotation mechanism and the condition of activation of the flap. They are compared with existing centrifuge modeling. Estimation of soil behavior type from cone penetration testing, and the interpretation of dissipation tests, is complicated in intermediate soil types, such as silty sands, sandy silts, etc., where partial consolidation occurs during penetration. This issue is investigated in this paper using results from cavity expansion and finite element analyses as well as field and centrifuge piezocone data. The implications for soil classification are examined using analytical expressions to explore the effect of normalized shear strength, rigidity index, and overconsolidation ratio relative to the influence of partial consolidation and viscous effects under fully undrained conditions. It is shown that partial drainage conditions can affect where data plots on soil behavior charts, thus complicating soil classification. The effect on dissipation tests following partial consolidation during cone penetration is shown to create errors in interpretation using experimental and numerical data. A new approach is developed based in part on manipulation of solutions for pore pressure dissipation (following undrained penetration) to account for these errors when interpreting dissipation tests. Errors can become significant during standard cone penetration testing when the t50 dissipation time is less than about 50 s. This paper presents a closed-form analytical solution for the consolidation of soil around a laterally loaded pile, assuming the soil skeleton deforms elastically and under plane strain conditions. The problem is idealized as a circular rigid disk surrounded by a deformable soil zone. Drainage is assumed to occur at the boundary of the assumed zone of deformable soil around the pile. The response around the pile is obtained using an uncoupled consolidation analysis. The solution for the governing equation of excess pore water pressure is found by using the separation of variables technique. Expressions for the initial excess pore water pressure distribution are derived from the mean total stress changes given by the elastic solution. Curves showing decay of the excess pore water pressure with time, and also the variation of pile displacement, are plotted in nondimensional form. The parameters that affect the displacement prediction are illustrated and discussed. Comparison with three-dimensional analysis of a laterally loaded pile shows that the two-dimensional analysis can reasonably predict the consolidation process along the shaft of the pile. Piles are required to withstand large lateral loads compared with the imposed vertical loads in certain applications in the offshore environment, such as for foundations for offshore wind turbines or as anchors for floating facilities. Although typically the soil strength increases with depth, close to the sea bed, the lateral capacity is often low. The requirement to limit pile head deflections necessitates the design of relatively long piles. Increasing the effective pile cross-section through 'wings' close to the pile head is shown here with centrifuge model tests to reduce pile head deflections by approximately 50% compared with regular monopiles without 'wings' for the same load level. The stiffer initial response of the winged pile also leads to smaller pile head deflections under cyclic loading, although the relative rate of accumulation is similar to that of a monopile. Simple methods for extrapolating from the monotonic pile head deflection to the deflection after thousands of cycles are compared with the results, and are shown to work equally well for piles with and without 'wings'. The loss in anchor embedment during keying, as it rotates to become normal to the cable load, reduces the uplift capacity of anchors in normally consolidated clay. The keying behavior of plate anchors has been studied previously by using centrifuge and field model tests. In this paper, a large deformation finite-element approach incorporating frequent mesh regeneration and allowing for evolution of the anchor-chain profile, was developed to simulate the keying process of rectangular and strip plate anchors. A parametric study was undertaken to quantify the loss in anchor embedment during keying in terms of the anchor geometry, soil properties, loading eccentricity, and inclination. The embedment loss decreased dramatically with increasing loading eccentricity and decreasing chain angle at the mudline to the horizontal. The loss in anchor embedment during keying increased as the local soil strength increased relative to the weight of the anchor, up to a limit determined by the eccentricity of loading. In contrast, the effect of the soil strength gradient was minimal. Findings of this study yield a recommendation that the most important factor in anchor keying, loading eccentricity, should not be less than half the anchor width for an effective design. A series of centrifuge model tests of the lateral response of a fixed-head single pile in soft clay is reported. Both monotonic and cyclic episodes of loading are described, with varying amplitude and with intervening periods of reconsolidation. The soil conditions are characterized by cyclic T-bar penetrometer tests. The ultimate capacity under monotonic load for virgin and for postcyclic conditions was found to be comparable with calculations based on existing design methods, including theoretical plasticity solutions and empirical methods. The lateral stiffness was observed to degrade with cycles, with the rate of degradation being greater for larger cycles. The degradation pattern has been tentatively linked to the cyclic T-bar response, by considering the 'damage' associated with the cumulative displacement and remolding, in each case. This approach provides a consistent interpretation of the tests. Although episodes of pile movement and soil remolding led to a reduction in lateral resistance, intervening periods of reconsolidation led to a similar magnitude of recovery and a reduction in the level of softening in subsequent cyclic episodes. During an initial episode of cyclic lateral movement, the stiffness degraded by a factor of 2.3, which is comparable with the strength sensitivity derived from a cyclic T-bar test. In contrast, after five episodes of reconsolidation, the stiffness had recovered back to within 25% of the stiffness observed in the first cycle of the first episode, and it showed negligible degradation during subsequent cycling. This observation implies that, over a long period of cyclic loading, the lateral stiffness of a pile may tend towards a value that is independent of cycle number, and that represents a balance between the damaging effects of remolding and pore pressure generation and the healing effects of time and reconsolidation. Estimation of spudcan penetration resistance is an important design step to guarantee the stability and functionality of offshore mobile jack-up units. Dependence on in situ penetrometer test data to evaluate the stratigraphy and resulting spudcan capacity profile has been increased. However, this becomes difficult in intermediate soil types in which the degree of consolidation during penetration falls between the extremes of fully drained or fully undrained. In this study, a penetrometer-based methodology utilizing results from cone and T-bar penetration tests is developed. Three main steps are involved, comprising estimation of the relative penetration resistance of spudcan and cone or T-bar penetrometer under fully drained and fully undrained conditions, and then quantifying the effect of the different normalized penetration rates for spudcan and penetrometer. Values of the various correlation parameters for the proposed model are evaluated. The validity and accuracy of the proposed methodology are evaluated through case studies from centrifuge tests in clay and a field example of spudcan installation in interbedded carbonate silts and sands. A manually operated penetrometer (DMS) fitted with cylindrical (T-bar) and ball penetrometer tips was developed for measuring the profiles of undisturbed and remolded undrained shear strength within box-core samples. This paper summarizes the findings of a series of miniature penetrometer tests and vane shear tests that were carried out on reconstituted clay from a local site in Western Australia. The aim of the tests was to evaluate the potential of the DMS in characterizing the shear strength of seabed surficial sediments. It was found that the DMS gave essentially identical T-bar and ball penetration resistances but these were up to 17% lower than the net cone resistance. From the comparison between the T-bar and ball penetration resistance and the shear strengths measured from vane shear tests, average N factors of 11 and 14 were obtained for intact and fully remolded conditions, respectively. The test results suggest that the DMS is a reliable and efficient means of obtaining intact and remolded shear strength profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Submarine landslides represent one of the most significant geohazards on the continental slope in respect of the risk they pose to infrastructure such as deep water pipelines. A numerical approach, based on the finite-element method but using remeshing, was established in this paper to simulate large flow deformation of debris from a landslide and to quantify the loads and displacements imposed on pipelines embedded in the seabed. A simple two-dimensional elastic perfectly plastic soil model with plane strain conditions was employed in this analysis. The pipeline was restrained by a set of springs so that the load on the pipeline built up to a stable value, representing the limiting load at which the debris flowed over the pipeline. A parametric study was undertaken by varying the pipeline embedment and the relative strengths of the debris and seabed. The analysis results show that the various combinations of soil strength and embedment depth lead to different debris-pipeline movement patterns and consequently lead to rather different magnitudes of the loads imposed on pipelines. The pipeline is subjected to the largest load (an equivalent pressure of 11.5 times debris strength) from the landslide when it rests on the weakest seabed. The pressure is proportional to the debris material strength but varies inversely with the seabed strength for partially embedded pipelines. For all strength combinations, there is a critical embedment depth beyond which the force on the pipeline reduces to a very small magnitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three-dimensional large deformation finite-element (FE) analyses were performed to investigate plate anchor capacity during vertical pullout. The remeshing and interpolation technique with small strain approach was expanded from two-dimensional to three-dimensional conditions and coupled with the FE software, ABAQUS. A modified recovery of equilibrium in patches technique was developed to map stresses after each remeshing. Continuous pullout of rectangular plate anchors was simulated and the large deformation results for strip, circular, and rectangular anchors were compared with model test data, small strain FE results, and plastic limit solutions. Interface conditions of no breakaway (bonded) and immediate breakaway (no tension) were considered at the anchor base. The effects of anchor roughness, aspect ratio, soil properties, and soil overburden pressure were investigated. It was found that the anchor roughness had minimal effect on anchor performance. For square and circular deep anchors under immediate breakaway conditions, the maximum uplift capacity increased with soil elastic modulus, which suggests that lower bound limit analysis and small strain FE analysis may overestimate the capacity. The soil beneath the anchor base separates from the anchor at a certain embedment depth near the mudline, once tensile stresses were generated. The ratio of separation depth to anchor width was found to increase linearly with the ratio of soil undrained shear strength to the product of soil effective unit weight and anchor width and was independent of the initial anchor embedment depth. The effect of foundation embedment on consolidation has not been considered previously in a systematic manner, although this is of particular interest for offshore foundations, where embedment is provided by skirts that enclose a compressible soil plug. For skirted foundations, critical uncertainties include what to assume in terms of the degree of drainage at skirt tip level, and the relative time scales of consolidation within the soil plug and beneath the foundation. In this paper, results from small strain finite-element analyses are used to quantify the immediate and time-dependent response of circular skirted foundations to uniaxial vertical loading. Foundations with frictionless and fully rough skirt-soil interfaces with varying ratio of embedment depth to foundation diameter are considered and the responses compared with those for surface foundations. Vertically installed plate anchors have been investigated in this paper by numerical analysis and centrifuge modeling. In the numerical analysis, the large deformation finite-element method (remeshing and interpolation technique with small strain) was used to simulate strip plate anchor rotation. In the centrifuge model tests, transparent soils were used to observe square anchor rotation. The loss in anchor embedment during anchor keying was assessed for anchors in uniform and normally consolidated soils with anchor pullout angle varying from 30° to 90° to the horizontal. It was found that the loss in anchor embedment during anchor keying may be expressed in terms of a nondimensional anchor geometry factor, which is a function of the eccentricity of the padeye, angle of loading, and the net moment applied to the anchor at the stage where the applied load balances the anchor weight. However, once the anchor geometry factor reaches a certain value, the loss in anchor embedment stabilizes at 0.25–0.5 times the anchor width. The loss in anchor embedment decreases linearly with decreasing pullout angle. Simple formulae and design procedures have been proposed to estimate the loss in anchor embedment during keying. In practice, natural soils exhibit strain-rate dependency and also soften as they are sheared and remolded. Traditional design approaches, however, have been developed based on idealized rate-independent perfectly plastic soil. This paper presents results for deep penetration of spudcan foundations in strain-softening, rate-dependent, soft clays quantifying the effects relative to results for ideal soil. The analysis was carried out using a large deformation finite-element (LDFE) approach, modifying the simple elastic-perfectly plastic Tresca soil model to allow strain softening, and incorporate strain-rate dependency of the shear strength. Parametric analyses were undertaken varying the strain-rate parameter, the sensitivity and ductility of the soil, the normalized penetration rate, and the soil strength nonhomogeneity. Overall, penetration resistance for rate-dependent, strain-softening clays lay below that for ideal soil. Increased brittleness of the soil led to marked reduction in penetration resistance, only partly compensated by strain-rate dependency. Key results have been presented in the form of design charts, fitted by simple expressions to estimate the limiting cavity depth above the advancing spudcan and the limiting bearing capacity factor at depth. The engineering design of shallow foundations on sand is almost universally based on one of the variants of the classical bearing capacity formula. However, this formula is suitable only where the sand exhibits dilative behavior and a clear rupture mechanism forms at failure. The main challenge then is choosing a suitable friction angle, taking into account the soil density and the high stresses beneath the footing. When other conditions apply, in particular when the footing is large or founded on compressible materials, alternative approaches need more focus on soil compressibility. Two simple semianalytical formulas are proposed and explored in this paper: (1) an analysis using a one-dimensional (1D) compression equation; and (2) an analysis using the concept of “bearing modulus.” It is argued that the bearing modulus approach may be used for conditions that reflect moderate design parameters (i.e., moderate foundation size and sand compressibility), but for very large foundations or highly compressible soils the 1D compression method is found more suitable. It is shown that the bearing modulus analysis can be approached in terms of the compression response of the soil, suggesting a possible route to link the bearing modulus directly to the compression model parameters of the soil. The behavior of strip and circular plate anchors during vertical pullout in uniform and normally consolidated clays was studied in this paper by means of small strain and large deformation finite-element analyses. Both fully bonded (attached), and “vented” (no suction on rear face), anchors were considered. The current numerical results were compared with existing laboratory test data, finite-element results, and analytical solutions. This study showed that, in small strain analysis, the scatter of existing data was mainly due to the effect of soil stiffness. In large deformation analysis, when soil and anchor base were attached with suction, the pullout capacity factor formed a unique curve independent of the soil strength (su), soil effective unit weight (γ′) and anchor size (B=width of strip anchor and D=diameter of circular anchor). The transitional embedment depth ratio, HSD/B or HSD/D, (where HSD=transition depth between shallow and deep embedment) was 1.4 for a strip anchor and 0.75 for a circular anchor. The ultimate pullout capacity factors (Nc) for deep embedment were 11.6 and 11.7 for smooth and rough strip anchors and 13.1 and 13.7 for smooth and rough circular anchors, respectively. However, when the anchor base was vented, the soil stayed attached to the anchor base for deep embedment, and the pullout capacity was therefore the same as for the attached anchor. The separation depth ratio, Hs/B or Hs/D, (where Hs=embedment depth at which the soil and anchor base separated) was found to increase linearly with the normalized strength ratio, su/γ′B or su/γ′D. Response of a pile subjected to torsional loading is significantly affected by soil profile. To investigate this characteristic, pile-soil interaction may be modeled by a series of independent springs distributed along the pile shaft (load transfer model). With this modeling, in this paper, analytical solutions are developed for the pile embedded in a two-layered soil profile. The soil stiffness of each layer is assumed to increase as a simple power law of depth, starting with any value at ground level. The solutions are expressed in terms of Bessel functions of noninteger order; and also presented in simplified expressions for some special cases. The solutions are verified using a spreadsheet, numerical program GASPILE, which is based on a nonlinear load transfer model. They are further collaborated using more rigorous numerical approaches available for a two-layered homogeneous soil. With the solutions, extensive parametric study was conducted and presented in nondimensional charts, in order to show consistency among these solutions, significant influence of stiffness profile on torsional response, and to identify conditions of utilizing these solutions. This paper addresses numerical simulation of deep penetration of full-flow penetrometers in strain-softening, rate-dependent, cohesive soil, and the observed phenomenon of periodic shear bands. The analysis was conducted using a large deformation finite element approach, modifying the simple elastic–perfectly plastic Tresca soil model to allow strain-softening, with strain-rate dependency being incorporated in order to avoid spurious mesh dependency. Parametric analyses were carried out varying the strain-softening parameters (hence the relative brittleness of the soil), the rigidity index of the soil, and the strain-rate parameter. Increased brittleness of the soil led to reduction in the penetration resistance, but also to increasingly significant oscillations in the resistance–penetration responses. The oscillation was found to result from periodic shear bands evolving cyclically ahead of the advancing cylindrical and spherical penetrometers. Analyses with different values of rigidity index confirmed further that the periodic shear bands were a real material phenomenon, rather than due to errors in numerical simulation. Similar phenomena have been observed for continuous flow problems in granular materials. However, rising strain-rate dependency tended to suppress the oscillations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
