Initial geometric imperfections have been identified as the main cause for the large discrepancies between experimental and theoretical buckling loads of thin-walled circular cylindrical shells under axial compression. The extreme sensitivity to imperfections has been previously addressed and mitigated through the introduction of stiffeners; however, sensitivity still remains. Optimized corrugated cylindrical shells are largely insensitive to imperfections and hence exhibit excellent load-bearing capacities, but their complex geometries make their construction difficult and costly using conventional manufacturing techniques. This was overcome in the present study through additive manufacturing (AM). Nine optimized corrugated shells with different diameter-to-thickness ratios, together with one reference circular cylindrical shell, were additively manufactured by means of powder bed fusion (PBF) from austenitic and martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel. The structural behavior of the AM shells was then investigated experimentally with the testing program comprising tensile coupon tests, measurements of basic geometric properties, and axial compression tests. Numerical analyses were also conducted following completion of the physical experiments. The experimental and numerical results verified the effectiveness of optimized corrugated cylindrical shells in achieving improved local buckling capacity and reduced imperfection sensitivity. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a metal three-dimensional (3D) printing method that enables large-scale structural elements with complex geometry to be built in a relatively efficient and cost-effective manner, offering revolutionary potential to the construction industry. However, fundamental experimental data on the structural performance of WAAM elements, especially at the member level, are lacking. Hence, an experimental study into the flexural buckling response of WAAM tubular columns has been conducted and is presented in this paper. A total of 18 stainless steel square and circular hollow section (SHS and CHS) columns were tested under axial compression with pin-ended boundary conditions. Regular SHS and CHS profiles were chosen to enable direct comparisons against equivalent, conventionally manufactured sections and, hence, to isolate the influence of the additive manufacturing process, whereas the cross-section sizes and column lengths were varied to achieve a broad spectrum of member slendernesses. Given the geometric undulations inherent to the WAAM process, 3D laser scanning was used to determine the as-built geometry and global geometric imperfections of the specimens; digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to monitor the surface deformations of the specimens during testing. Full details of the column testing program, together with a detailed discussion of the experimental results, are presented. The applicability of the current column design provisions in EN 1993-1-4 and AISC 370 to WAAM stainless steel members was assessed by comparing the test results with the codified strength predictions. The structural behavior and residual capacity of S700 high-strength steel circular hollow section (CHS) columns after exposure to elevated temperatures were studied through testing and numerical modeling. The testing program was conducted on 10 S700 high-strength steel CHS columns and comprised heating and cooling of the specimens as well as postfire material testing, measurements of initial geometric imperfections, and pin-ended column tests. Numerical simulations were subsequently performed, where finite element models were built and validated with reference to the experimental results and afterward used to conduct parametric studies to obtain further numerical data. Given that there are no specific provisions for the design of steel structures after exposure to elevated temperatures, the relevant room-temperature design buckling curves were evaluated, using postfire material properties, for their applicability to S700 high-strength steel CHS columns after exposure to elevated temperatures, based on the experimental and numerical data. The evaluation results indicated that the buckling curves prescribed in the American specification and Australian standard lead to accurate and consistent residual capacity predictions for S700 high-strength steel CHS columns after exposure to elevated temperatures, while the Eurocode buckling curve yields conservative predictions of residual capacity. Stainless steel structural sections possess several features that result in a significantly different response to that of equivalent carbon steel sections. To date these features have not been fully recognized in design codes, which have largely adapted rules devised for carbon steel in a rather simplistic fashion. Recently, a new approach for dealing with local buckling and the associated loss of effectiveness that does not utilize the concepts of either cross-sectional classification or effective cross-sectional properties has been developed for stainless steel and has also been applied to other nonlinear metallic materials. The method is based directly on the deformation capacities of cross sections and covers the behavior of stainless steel members subjected to flexural buckling and combined axial load plus bending. The proposed method has been verified using test results and its performance has been compared against the existing ASCE and Eurocode design guidance for structural stainless steel. Significantly improved and more consistent predictions have been obtained using the proposed method without any extra calculation effort. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a method of metal three-dimensional (3D) printing that has the potential for a significant impact on the construction industry due to its ability to produce large parts with reasonable printing times and costs. However, there is currently a lack of fundamental data on the performance of structural elements produced using this method of manufacturing. Seeking to bridge this gap, the compressive behavior and resistance of WAAM square hollow sections (SHS) are investigated in this paper. In a previous study by the authors, testing reported of sheet material produced in the same manner as the studied SHS is first summarized. The production, measurement, and testing of a series of stainless steel SHS stub columns are then described. Regular cross-section profiles were chosen to isolate the influence of 3D printing and enable direct comparisons to be made against equivalent sections produced using traditional methods of manufacturing. A range of cross-section sizes and thicknesses were considered to achieve variations in the local cross-sectional slenderness of the tested specimens, allowing the influence of local buckling to be assessed. Repeat tests enabled the variability in response between specimens to be evaluated; a total of 14 SHS stub columns of seven different local slendernesses was tested, covering all cross-section classes of AISC 370 and Eurocode 3. Advanced noncontact measurement techniques were employed to determine the as-built geometric properties, while digital image correlation measurements were used to provide detailed insight into the deformation characteristics of the test specimens. Owing to the higher geometric variability of WAAM relative to conventional forming processes, the tested 3D printed stub columns were found to exhibit more variable capacities between repeat specimens than is generally displayed by stainless steel SHS. Comparisons of the stub column test results with existing structural design rules highlight the need to allow for the weakening effect of the geometric undulations that are inherent to the WAAM process in order to achieve safe-sided strength predictions. Aluminum alloys are being increasingly used in a wide range of construction applications owing to their sound mechanical properties, lightness in weight, strong corrosion resistance, ability to be formed into complex and efficient cross-sectional shapes, and natural aesthetics. Aluminum alloys are characterized by a rounded stress–strain response, with no sharply defined yield point. Such behavior can be accurately represented using Ramberg–Osgood-type equations. In the present study, use of a two-stage Ramberg–Osgood model to describe the full-range stress–strain behavior of aluminum alloys is proposed and, following careful analysis of a comprehensive database of aluminum alloy coupon test data assembled from the literature, standardized values or predictive expressions for the required input parameters are derived. The experimental database includes over 700 engineering stress–strain curves obtained from 56 sources and covers five common aluminum alloy grades: 5052-H36, 6061-T6, 6063-T5, 6082-T6, and 7A04-T6. The developed model is shown to be more accurate in predicting the full-range stress–strain response of aluminum alloys than existing expressions, and is suitable for use in the analytical modeling, numerical simulation, and advanced design of aluminum alloy structures. The behavior and design of hot-rolled and cold-formed steel square and rectangular hollow section (SHS and RHS) columns, made of both normal- and high-strength material, are addressed in this paper. A series of experiments on hot-rolled high-strength steel SHS columns was first conducted—six tests on S690 SHS 100×100×4 columns and six tests on S770 SHS 120×120×6.3 columns were performed. Finite-element (FE) models were developed to replicate the experimental results and to carry out parametric studies to expand the column buckling data pool. The accuracy of the European and North American buckling design rules for normal- and high-strength steel SHS and RHS columns was evaluated through comparisons with the freshly generated test and FE results, as well as with existing test data collected from the literature. Finally, a modified approach was proposed and statistically verified in accordance with existing standards; the new approach features an imperfection factor that is a continuous function of yield strength, reflecting the reducing relative influence of residual stresses and global imperfections with increasing steel grades. An experimental study was conducted into the degree of composite action that can arise between cold-formed steel joists and wood-based flooring panels. A series of material, push-out and 4-point bending tests were carried out, and alternative means of shear connection, featuring fasteners and adhesives, were investigated. It was found that the spacing of the fasteners and the application of structural adhesive at the beam-board interface had a significant influence on the attained degree of shear connection and, hence, the moment capacity and flexural stiffness of the system. The highest degree of shear connection (up to approximately 60%) was obtained using the structural adhesive, bringing corresponding increases in capacity and stiffness of approximately 100 and 40%, respectively, over the bare steel. Smaller, but still very significant, increases in capacity and stiffness were achieved through the use of screws alone. On the basis of the results of the push-out tests, a load-slip relationship for screw fasteners in wood-based floorboards was proposed; this was designed for use in future analytical and numerical models. The findings of this research demonstrate, for the first time, the benefits that can be derived through the practical exploitation of composite action in cold-formed steel flooring systems in terms of enhanced structural performance and efficiency of material use. An experimental and numerical study of the flexural buckling behavior of hot-finished high-strength steel (HSS) square and rectangular hollow section (SHS and RHS, respectively) columns is described in this paper. A total of 30 hot-finished S460 and S690 hollow section column specimens have been tested in compression with pin-ended boundary conditions. Finite element (FE) models have been developed to replicate the experiments and employed in a subsequent parametric study considering a range of member geometries. An experimental and numerical study of ferritic stainless steel tubular cross sections under combined loading is presented in this paper. Two square hollow section (SHS) sizes--SHS 40 × 40 × 2 and SHS 50 × 50 × 2 made of Grade EN 1.4509 (AISI 441) stainless steel--were considered in the experimental program, which included 2 concentrically loaded stub column tests, 2 four-point bending tests, and 14 eccentrically loaded stub column tests. In parallel with the experimental investigation, a finite-element (FE) study was also conducted. Following validation of the FE models against the test results, parametric analyses were carried out to generate further structural performance data. The experimental and numerical results were analyzed and compared with the design strengths predicted by the current European stainless steel design code EN 1993-1-4 and American stainless steel design specification SEI/ASCE-8. The comparisons revealed that the codified capacity predictions for ferritic stainless steel cross sections under combined loading are unduly conservative. The deformation- based continuous strength method (CSM) has been extended to cover the case of combined loading. The applicability of CSM to the design of ferritic stainless steel cross sections under combined loading was also evaluated. The CSM was shown to offer substantial improvements in design efficiency over existing codified methods. The aims of this study are to generate experimental data and develop numerical models for aluminum alloy continuous beams, and to utilize the results to underpin the development of revised design methods for indeterminate structures. This paper presents an experimental program and finite-element (FE) analyses for two-span continuous beams (i.e., five-point bending) of square and rectangular hollow sections (SHSs and RHSs). The experimental program comprised 27 five-point bending tests with three different positioning of loads. The testing procedures and key results are reported. The test specimens were manufactured by extrusion, with 18 of grade 6061-T6 and 9 of grade 6063- T5 heat-treated aluminum alloys. The test specimens were nonslender sections, and mostly of Class 1 proportions. Generally, the specimens failed by the formation of a collapse mechanism comprising three plastic hinges. The distances between the supports and the loading points were varied in order to form the first plastic hinge in different locations, to achieve different load levels between the first hinge and collapse, and to change the rotation demands on the first hinge that formed. The FE models were developed and failure was defined as either when a plastic collapse mechanism was formed or the material fracture strain was reached on the tension flange, whichever occurred first. The numerical models were first validated against the experimentally obtained load-deflection responses, as well as the failure modes. The experimental and FE ultimate loads were both found to be beyond the theoretical loads corresponding to the formation of the first hinge as well as the calculated plastic collapse loads. A key characteristic of aluminum alloy, strain hardening, is shown to be particularly significant in both the experimental program and the numerical investigation. The validated FE models are used to generate numerical results through parametric studies in the companion paper. Aluminum alloys are employed in a range of structural engineering applications, supported by many international design standards, but plastic design methods are generally not permitted. In the second part of this study, an extensive numerical parametric study is conducted to assess the effect of key parameters, such as cross section slenderness, cross section aspect ratio, and moment gradient on the strength, strain hardening, and moment redistribution behavior of aluminum alloy continuous beams. The key input parameters and findings are reported herein. Based on both the experimental and parametric numerical results, the design provisions of the American, Australian/New Zealand, and European specifications as well as the traditional plastic design method, the plastic hinge method, and the continuous strength method (CSM) for indeterminate structures, the scope of which is extended in the present study, have been evaluated. The design strengths predicted by the three specifications were found to be rather conservative, while the predications of the latter three methods are more precise and consistent. The results reveal that strain hardening at the cross-sectional level and moment redistribution at the global system level have significant influence on the performance of stocky (plastic and compact sections) aluminum alloy members, which should be accounted for in design. The lateral stability of imperfect discretely braced steel beams is analyzed using Rayleigh-Ritz approximations for the lateral deflection and the angle of twist. Initially, it is assumed that these degrees of freedom can be represented by functions comprising only single harmonics; this is then compared with the more accurate representation of the displacement functions by full Fourier series. It is confirmed by linear eigenvalue analysis that the beam can realistically buckle into two separate classes of modes: a finite number of node-displacing modes, equal to the number of restraints provided, and an infinite number of single harmonic buckling modes, where the restraint nodes remain undeflected. Closed-form analytical relations are derived for the elastic critical moment of the beam, the forces induced in the restraints, and the minimum stiffness required to enforce the first internodal buckling mode. The position of the restraint above or below the shear center is shown to influence the overall buckling behavior of the beam. The analytical results for the critical moment of the beam are validated by the finite-element program LTBeam, whereas the results for the deflected shape of the beam are validated by the numerical continuation software AUTO -07p, with very close agreement between the analytical and the numerical results.
