Shake table experiments are conducted to assess the potential of the polymer injection technique as a liquefaction countermeasure. A large 2.9 m high (10 ft) laminar soil container on a 3.9×1.85 m (13×6 ft) shake table is employed. Mitigation of liquefaction-induced settlement for a shallow foundation is explored. In a series of two shake table experiments, the system response is studied first without (baseline) and subsequently with polymer injected into the liquefiable stratum. Each test is densely instrumented to provide insights into the dynamic response of the soil and foundation system. Furthermore, cone penetration tests (CPTs) are performed pre- and postinjection to assess the extent of soil improvement. Strong base excitation is imparted by the shake table, resulting in liquefaction and excessive foundation settlement in the original baseline test. In the second test, with the polymer injection countermeasure, a significant reduction is observed in the tendency for liquefaction and the resulting foundation settlement. After this test, careful excavation provided additional insights into the polymer's configuration within the deposit, increasing overall soil relative density, confinement and creating solidified paths for the shallow foundation load toward the lower, more competent stratum. As such, these mechanisms have the potential to allow for: (1) an increase in soil resistance to liquefaction, and (2) a significant reduction in settlement of overlying shallow foundations. The damage caused by seismic shaking and liquefaction-induced permanent ground deformation has conventionally been assessed as two separate problems often by different engineers. However, the two problems are inherently linked, since ground shaking causes liquefaction, and liquefaction-induced soil softening affects ground shaking. Modelling both problems within a single numerical model is complex for both the engineer and the software, and most finite element software only have the capabilities to address one of them. To improve the estimates of the seismic performance of buildings on liquefiable soil, a new sub-structuring approach is proposed called the macro-mechanism approach. This approach allows the soil-liquefaction-foundation-structure interaction to be considered in a series of sub-models accounting for the major nonlinear mechanisms of the system at a macro level. The proposed approach was implemented in the open-source finite element software OpenSees and then applied to a case study of a building where significant liquefaction- and shaking-induced damage was observed after the 1999 Mw 7.4 Kocaeli Earthquake. The case study building was also simulated using two different commercial software programs, the finite difference software FLAC, and the finite element software PLAXIS, by two different research teams. A comparison between the results from the macro-mechanism approach compared to full numerical models shows that the macro-mechanism approach can capture the extent of the foundation deformation and provide more realistic estimates of the building damage than full approaches since the FLAC and PLAXIS models consider elastic elements for the building. An innovative yet extremely simple approach to reduce the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings on shallow foundations is to remove the lateral contact between the embedded foundation and the surrounding soil. This paper compares the dynamic response of two identical one-degree-of-freedom reduced-scale model sway frames tested in a geotechnical centrifuge. One of the models was founded on fully embedded shallow strip footings, whereas the foundations of the other were disconnected from the soil laterally. Both models were constructed in dry medium density sand whose strength and small strain shear stiffness profiles were obtained by cone penetration and air hammer tests carried out in flight. Various tools were used to monitor the displacements and accelerations both in the structure and in the soil, including micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers, piezoelectric accelerometers, LVDTs, and a high-frequency camera. The experimental results demonstrate that the lateral disconnection of the foundation from the adjacent soil significantly reduces the foundation translational and rotational stiffness, which results in a larger predominant period of the structure and a reduction of the absolute floor accelerations obtained for different sinusoidal input signals. The lateral disconnection also mitigates floor drift and story shear forces. The trade-off is the lower radiative damping observed for the laterally disconnected foundation, which results in a larger number of post-earthquake oscillations of the structure. Issue 1 The authors employed three-dimensional (3D) finite-element software Plaxis 3D ([1]) to model a ring foundation in a cohesive soil, where a quarter of the problem domain (i.e., a 90° sector of the domain) was discretized. The authors employed the commercial finite-element software, namely, Plaxis 3D, to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of ring foundations in cohesive soils. In particular, for both cases of rough and smooth foundations, Eq. (10) of the original paper cannot make a realistic prediction in terms of the change of undrained bearing capacity when the I k i value varies from 1 to 10. Rather, Eq. This work provides a detailed description of the full-scale experimental tests performed on the dynamic behavior of a shallow foundation under intermediate strains. Awind tower supported by the foundation was subjected to a snap-off test, i.e., it was first pulled with a cable and then suddenly released, thus inducing free oscillations of nonnegligible amplitude in the whole system. The motion induced was measured with a digital camera, seismometers, and accelerometers attached to the surrounding ground surface and to the wind tower. An innovative interpretation technique based on optimizing a few meaningful parameters obtained from the recorded time histories was required by the heterogeneity of the data collected and the accuracy needed to deduce the behavior of the foundation plinth. The analyses showed that the rotational stiffness of the foundation plinth was approximately 10 times greater than that of the base joint, which in turn was approximately one order of magnitude greater than that of the wind tower. As a result, the vibration phenomenon was driven by the wind tower, which induced a sort of forced, damped, harmonic excitation in the foundation such that the tower's oscillations and the foundation's rocking were decoupled from one another. Seismometer measurements performed on the ground surrounding the foundation plinth enabled an assessment of the geometrical attenuation of the surface vibrations induced by foundation rocking. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the geometrical attenuation assessments reported in this study are the first to be published on the deformations of the ground surrounding a rocking foundation, and could serve as a useful reference to validate constitutive models for simulating small-strain soil response. Two geotechnical centrifuge tests were designed to elicit the influence of soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) and structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) effects on the seismic demands of an inelastic frame structure founded on individual spread footings. Four experimental cases were considered: (1) SFSI of an individual inelastic frame structure (baseline case); (2) in-plane SSSI between the frame structure and a large elastic wall structure designed to respond predominately in a rocking mode; (3) anti-plane SSSI between the frame and wall structures; and (4) combined in-plane and anti-plane SSSI between the frame structure and two wall structures. Results from Cases 1, 2, and 4 are analyzed considering 13 demand parameters. The peak seismic demands from the baseline case are compared to the peak demands from the SSSI cases to elicit the impacts of building adjacency. The number of earthquake motions that resulted in increases or decreases in the seismic demands in the frame structure are tracked for the SSSI cases. For these tests, SSSI consistently results in increased peak foundation moment and foundation base shear demands, regardless of the geometric layout of the structures. These increases propagate throughout the superstructure, resulting in increases in moment, shear and curvature ductility demands in the structural components. SSSI effects are observed to be most significant for low-to-moderate intensity earthquake motions, suggesting that particular consideration should be given to the likelihood of SSSI for highly probable earthquakes. Although the nonlinear behavior of rocking shallow foundations has been experimentally and numerically demonstrated as an effective tool to dissipate vibrational energy during seismic loading, the engineering community has yet to uniformly accept it as a targeted design mechanism for diffusing seismic energy in a structure. This paper presents results of a centrifuge test program that incorporated inelastic behavior into model building systems via yielding of both structural and foundation components. Three 2-story-1-bay building models were designed with similar layouts but different combinations of foundation and structural component yield strengths and were shaken with a similar suite of earthquake motions. Measurements of behavior of each of the model buildings are presented and cross-compared in terms of time history responses, hysteretic responses of the structural and foundation fuses, and maximum response parameters. A balanced design configuration, wherein the rocking foundation and structural fuse are intended to yield at approximately the same load, is demonstrated to be a well-controlled seismic-resisting system, with greatly reduced seismic ductility demand on the structural components. Moreover, seismic energy is well distributed among the targeted yielding components. In contrast, if the footing is restrained from rocking, the structural component ductility demand is significantly greater than that compared to its demand when the foundation is allowed to rock. In essence, the foundation rocking dominated model demonstrates its ability to protect the superstructure from seismic demands. In contrast, when the rocking foundation capacity is more than twice that of the structural fuse, rotations at the foundations are reduced significantly, at the price of much larger demands to the superstructure. The mechanisms that control the seismic liquefaction performance of shallow foundations are identified for the special, still common case of a clay crust separating the foundation from the liquefied ground. For that purpose, foundation response is first analyzed with the nonlinear dynamic finite-difference method and consequently evaluated in connection with published field and experimental evidence. Insight is given into the excess pore-pressure buildup under the foundation, the seismic settlement accumulation, the static-bearing capacity degradation, and the inertia-induced interaction with the superstructure. It is thus shown that a naturally or artificially created nonliquefiable soil crust may effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of liquefaction and allow for a performance-based design of surface foundations, without additional improvement measures. Recent studies have highlighted the beneficial role of foundation uplifting and the potential effectiveness of guiding the plastic hinge into the foundation soil by allowing full mobilization of bearing capacity during strong seismic shaking. With the inertia loading transmitted onto the superstructure being limited by the capacity of the foundation, this concept may provide an alternative method of in-ground seismic isolation: the so-called rocking isolation. Attempting to unravel the effectiveness of this alternative design method, this paper experimentally investigates the nonlinear response of a surface foundation on sand and its effect on the seismic performance of an idealized slender single-degree-of-freedom structure. Using a bridge pier as an illustrative prototype, three foundation design alternatives are considered, representing three levels of design conservatism. Their performance is investigated through static (monotonic and slow-cyclic pushover) loading, and reduced-scale shaking table testing. Rocking isolation may provide a valid alternative for the seismic protection of structures, providing encouraging evidence in favor of the innovative idea of moving foundation design toward a less conservative, even unconventional, treatment. Field measurements of foundation movements in central Mississippi have revealed design issues involving expansive soils. At one building, field measurements of the first floor slab at 14 locations show that heaving occurred at a steady rate during part of an extensive drought. The steady rate was maintained throughout the final 21.5 months of a 23.5-month study period following a record drought that occurred at the beginning of the study. The average change in the movement rate was 2.9 mm (0.11 in.) per year over the last 21.5 months. Median movement rates for all the pins varied from 25 mm (0.98 in.) per year to 1.8 mm (0.07 in.) per year excluding the measurements made during the first part of the drought. Elevation surveys at another facility show how the rate of heave is influenced by geologic variations. These surveys also show how the depth of clay (from the surface) influenced heave and how differential movements of a structure are produced from these variations in geology. Effective (design) thermal resistivity values for use of rigid, cellular polystyrene foam insulation in below-ground frost-protection applications play an important role in the success of the ASCE 32-01 standard. The ASCE 32-01 standard is currently recognized in U.S. model building codes as a cost-effective means of protecting building foundations against frost heave in regions with seasonal ground freezing and no permafrost. The long-term thermal performance of foundation insulation used for this purpose is, therefore, a critical building performance concern. This same concern also has relevance to sustained performance of below-ground insulation used for energy conservation purposes. This paper provides a critical review and analysis of data reported in the literature on below-ground thermal performance of rigid, cellular polystyrene foam insulations. These products can be molded expanded polystyrene or extruded polystyrene as defined by ASTM C578 in ASTM 2008 Standard. The findings serve to document and confirm effective thermal resistivity values originally incorporated into the ASCE 32-01 standard for frost protection of building foundations. A foundation system may involve more than a single footing with an arrangement such that the footings are sufficiently closely spaced that adjacent footings interact. Vertical, horizontal, and moment capacity of multifooting foundation systems are potentially dependent on footing interaction, and in particular overturning capacity can be significantly enhanced by the structural rigidity of a multifooting foundation system. There is no established procedure for the calculation of bearing capacity of a shallow foundation system comprising cojoined footings and ad hoc approaches may simply involve summing the ultimate limit states of the individual footings as if they acted independently; neglecting additional capacity of the system available from the kinematic constraint provided by the structural connection between the footings. Plane strain finite-element analyses have been carried out to investigate the undrained ultimate limit states under general loading of skirted two-footing foundation systems at various normalized spacing compared to a single skirted footing of equal bearing area and embedment ratio. It has been recognized that the ductility demands on a superstructure might be reduced by allowing rocking behavior and mobilization of the ultimate capacity of shallow foundations during seismic loading. However, the absence of practical reliable foundation modeling techniques to accurately design foundations with the desired capacity and energy dissipation characteristics and concerns about permanent deformations have hindered the use of nonlinear soil–foundation–structure interaction as a designed mechanism for improving performance of structural systems. This paper presents a new “contact interface model” that has been developed to provide nonlinear relations between cyclic loads and displacements of the footing–soil system during combined cyclic loading (vertical, shear, and moment). The rigid footing and the soil beneath the footing in the zone of influence, considered as a macroelement, are modeled by keeping track of the geometry of the soil surface beneath the footing, along with the kinematics of the footing–soil system, interaction diagrams in vertical, shear, and moment space, and the introduction of a parameter, critical contact area ratio (A/Ac); the ratio of footing area (A) to the footing contact area required to support vertical and shear loads (Ac). Several contact interface model simulations were carried out and the model simulations are compared with centrifuge model test results. Using only six user-defined model input parameters, the contact interface model is capable of capturing the essential features (load capacities, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation, and deformations) of shallow foundations subjected to combined cyclic loading. Immediate and long-term settlement checks are an integral part of foundation design. Therefore, reasonably accurate estimates of the immediate settlement of shallow foundations bearing on clay are necessary, particularly for highly plastic clays or organic soils, for which the immediate settlement may be significant. This immediate settlement is due entirely to the distortion of the clay underneath the shallow foundations because, in the short term, there is no opportunity for change in the clay volume. Since soil stress-strain response is nonlinear even at small strains, design procedures based on linear elasticity cannot accurately predict soil deformations. Hence, an immediate settlement analysis that takes soil nonlinearity into account is needed. In this paper, finite-element analysis is used to develop design charts that can be used to estimate the immediate settlement of axially loaded square, rectangular, and strip footings bearing on clay. The clay is modeled with a simple nonlinear constitutive relationship. A design example is included to illustrate how the proposed procedure can be readily applied in practice with the knowledge of the undrained shear strength and the initial shear modulus of the clay. The purpose of this study was to critically examine insitu test methods as a means for predicting settlement of shallow foundations. Accordingly, a 1.8 m(6 ft) diameter concrete footing was statically load tested. Prior to construction, insitu [standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), dilatometer (DMT), and pressuremeter (PMT)] and laboratory tests were performed to determine engineering properties of the soil. Predictions of the footing settlement were made by traditional as well as finite element methods. The results of the static load test showed settlements were over predicted by all methods. However, the traditional methods provided reasonable settlement estimates using either SPT-N or back computed CPT(N) as input. Finite element analyses using either DMT or CPT derived input parameters provided reasonable settlement estimates. Finite element analyses using SPT or PMT derived input parameters provided poor settlement estimates. The Mohr–Coulomb (elastoplastic) model, accounting for overconsolidation, provided better estimates than the hardening soil (hyperbolic-cap) model for all insitu test derived parameters. Scale effects of shallow foundation bearing capacity on granular materials were investigated to further evaluate the trend of decreasing bearing capacity factor, Nγ, with increasing footing width, B, observed by other researchers. Model-scale square and circular footing tests ranging in width from 0.025 to 0.914 m were performed on two compacted sands at three relative densities. Results of the model-scale footing tests show that the bearing capacity factor, Nγ, is dependent on the absolute width of the footing for both square and circular footings. Although this phenomenon is well known, the current study used a large range of footing sizes tested on well-graded sands to show that the previously reported modifications to the bearing capacity factor, Nγ, using grain-size and reference footing width do not sufficiently account for the scale effect seen in the test results from this study. It also shows that behavior of most model-scale footing tests cannot be directly correlated to the behavior of full-scale tests because of differences in mean stresses experienced beneath footings of varying sizes. The relationship of the initial testing conditions (i.e., void ratio) of the sand beds and mean stress experienced beneath the footing (correlated to footing size) to the critical state line controls footing behavior and, therefore, model-scale tests must be performed at a lower density than a corresponding prototype footing in order to correctly predict behavior. Small footings were shown to have low mean stresses but high Nγ values, which indicates high operative friction angles and may be related to the curvature of the Mohr–Coulomb failure envelope. A major element in the design and construction of tunnels and braced excavations in urban areas is the control of ground movements and protection of adjacent or overlying structures, which are often constructed with masonry and set on shallow foundations. Initial evaluation of potential building damage is obtained by assuming that building distortion is compliant with the imposed ground movements. Further investigations take into consideration the reduction in building distortion that occurs as a result of building stiffness. Presented in this paper are the results of numerical analyses for evaluating the equivalent bending and shear stiffness of masonry structures taking into account the anisotropy of the masonry units and the percentage of window openings. The distinct element code, UDEC, has been used to model each masonry block and the mortar between blocks for masonry walls in plane stress conditions. Parametric studies, conducted for a range of window opening percentage and brick/mortar joint stiffness, show that the equivalent shear stiffness for buildings with windows are low, typically in the range of 1/10–1/20 of the equivalent bending stiffness. Thus, for most masonry buildings, the shear deformation is dominant for a building subjected to excavation-induced ground movements. Equivalent bending and shear stiffness evaluated by the numerical analyses is compared with field data and analytical calculations, which may be available only for the case of no window openings.
