Analyses of melibiose and lactose transporters of enteric bacteria indicate that the Melibiose transporter of Enterobacter cloacae has interesting properties, primary structure and gene. Inducible transport activity in the cells of this bacterium was detected, with H+ and not Na+ serving as the coupling cation for this transporter. The meliobiose transporter was found to have high sequence similarity with the lactose transporter and the raffinose transporter.

The TnphoA gene was utilized to create a pool of random insertional mutants where antimonite resistant mutant was isolated. The sequence analysis revealed that the gene was located in the glpF gene, which in turn is the coding used for the glycerol facilitator GlpF. The results suggest that in solution Sb(III), glycerol facilitator is recognized as a polyol. Furthermore, resistance can result from inactivation of GlpF.
