Objective: The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) proposes principles that can be translated into testable hypotheses. This is one of the first studies to have explicitly tested HAPA's first 2 principles, which are (1) health behavior change process can be subdivided into motivation and volition, and (2) volition can be grouped into intentional and action stages. The 3 stage groups are labeled preintenders, intenders, and actors. Method: The hypotheses of the HAPA model were investigated in a sample of 1,193 individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Study participants completed a questionnaire assessing the HAPA variables. The hypotheses were evaluated by examining mean differences of test variables and by the use of multigroup structural equation modeling (MSEM). Results: Findings support the HAPA's 2 principles and 3 distinct stages. The 3 HAPA stages were significantly different in several stage-specific variables, and discontinuity patterns were found in terms of nonlinear trends across means. In terms of predicting goals, action planning, and behavior, differences transpired between the 2 motivational stages (preintenders and intenders), and between the 2 volitional stages (intenders and actors). Conclusions: Results indicate implications for supporting behavior change processes, depending on in which stage a person is at: All individuals should be helped to increase self-efficacy. Preintenders and intenders require interventions targeting outcome expectancies. Actors benefit from an improvement in action planning to maintain and increase their previous behavior. Overall, the first 2 principles of the HAPA were supported and some evidence for the other principles was found. Future research should experimentally test these conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intention is theorized as the proximal determinant of behavior in some theories of motivation, but the need to understand predictors of action control (i.e., translating an intention into behavior) is warranted to tailor physical activity intervention efforts. The purpose of this study was to examine constructs of the transtheoretical model of behavior change (TTM) as predictors of physical activity intention -- behavior profiles across 6 months in a large Canadian sample (N = 1,192). Results showed that 5 of the 8 possible intention -- behavior profiles had a substantial number of participants: nonintenders, unsuccessful adopters, successful adopters, unsuccessful maintainers, and successful maintainers. Constructs of the TTM distinguished (p < .01) intention -- behavior profiles. Self-efficacy and the behavioral processes of change were particularly good predictors of action control (p < .01), but disaggregated beliefs and processes identified specific intervention targets for successful physical activity adoption and maintenance. Objectives: Two primary objectives were to examine (a) changes in physical activity (PA) over a 12-month period in people living with cardiac disease who did not attend cardiac rehabilitation (CR), and (b) the role of barrier self-efficacy in explaining these changes from a gender perspective. A secondary objective was to examine whether attending CR (or not) moderated the gender-barrier self-efficacy relationship with PA. Design and Setting: Participants (N = 801) completed a questionnaire in the hospital and at 2, 6, and 12 months after hospitalization, as well as a telephone-administered 7-day PA recall at 2, 6, and 12 months. Main Outcome Measures: PA and barrier self-efficacy. Results: Hierarchical linear modeling showed significant declines in PA over time, which were especially pronounced for women. Moreover, the association between barrier self-efficacy and PA became significantly weaker over time, especially for women. This trend was similar for participants who did and did not attend CR. Conclusion: Interventions that focus on increasing barrier self-efficacy in people living with heart disease after hospitalization will likely equally benefit men and women in the short term but may disproportionately benefit men in the longer term regardless of participation in CR.
