Pavlovian conditioning is widely used to study the substrates of learning and memory in the mammalian brain. In a standard protocol, subjects are exposed to pairings of a conditioned stimulus (CS; e.g., a tone) with an unconditioned stimulus (US; e.g., an electric shock). Subsequent presentations of the CS elicit a range of behaviors that relate to the US (e.g., freezing) showing that animals learned the CS–US relation. However, it is still unclear how neuronal activity pertaining to the CS comes to excite a representation of the US, and thereby, conditioned responses. The current analysis of this problem, based on neurophysiological evidence, views Pavlovian conditioning as a process of facilitating the disinhibition, rather than the excitation, of neuronal responses representing the US. Conversely, Pavlovian extinction is viewed as a process of relearning to inhibit neuronal responses representing the US. We propose a mathematical equation that confirms the predictions made by this novel perspective on Pavlovian conditioning when applied to conditioning phenomena that fall beyond classic associative learning theories. A series of experiments used rats to examine renewal and reinstatement of extinguished second-order conditioned fear (freezing) responses. The initial experiment demonstrated that freezing responses to a stimulus (S2) were contingent on its pairings with a second stimulus (SI) and on the prior pairings of SI and an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US). Subsequent experiments showed that these freezing responses extinguished across S2 alone presentations, but were renewed when: S2-S1 pairings and S2 alone presentations occurred in the same context and testing of S2 occurred elsewhere; S2--SI pairings and testing were in the same context and S2 alone presentations were elsewhere; and when S2-S1 pairings, S2 alone presentations and testing occurred in different contexts. Freezing responses to an extinguished S 1 were reinstated by US alone presentations. However, these responses were not reinstated to an extinguished S2 by US or SI alone presentations, and, conversely, freezing to a nonextinguished S2 was unaffected by extinction of SI. The results were interpreted to mean that S2-S1 pairings produced an association between S2 and the fear responses elicited by SI and that extinction of this association is controlled by context. Reactivation of an already consolidated memory makes it labile for a period of several hrs, which are required for its reconsolidation. Evidence suggests that the return of conditioned fear through sponta-neous recovery, reinstatement, or renewal can be prevented by blockading this reconsolidation process using pharmacological or behavioral interventions. Postretrieval-extinction learning has been shown to prevent the return of cued fear in humans using fear-irrelevant stimuli, as well as cued and contextual fear in rodents. The effects of postretrieval extinction on human contextually controlled cued fear to fear-relevant stimuli remain unknown, and are the focus of the present study. The experimental design was based on 3 consecutive days: acquisition, reactivation and extinction, and re-extinction. For the fear conditioning, 2 zoo frames served as different contexts, 5 fear-relevant stimuli (aversive animal pictures) served as conditioned stimuli (CS), electric shocks served as unconditioned stimuli (UCS). Expectancy ratings and skin-conductance response (SCR) were used as measures of fear responses; spontaneous recovery and renewal were used as indicators of the return of fear. The expectancy ratings and SCR results indicated spontaneous recovery on the third day, regardless of retrieval prior to extinction. No robust renewal effect was seen. It is suggested that the use of fear-relevant stimuli, the context salience, or reactivation context may explain the lack of reconsolidation effect. Renewal has been observed in several protocols. One, termed ABA, trains a conditioned stimulus (CS) in one context, A, extinguishes the CS in a second context, B, and tests either in A or B. We used between- and within-subjects designs in three experiments with rats to study how a history of cue pre-exposure affects extinction and renewal of conditioned fear responses (freezing). In each experiment, a stimulus was pre-exposed in either context B or context C, paired with an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US) in a third context, A, extinguished in B, and finally tested in A. Freezing declined at the same rate when extinction occurred in the same or a different context as pre-exposure in between-subjects designs (Experiments 1 and 2), but declined faster when extinction and pre-exposure occurred in the same than in a different context in a within-subjects design (Experiment 3). In each experiment, renewal of freezing responses in the conditioning context, A, was greater when subjects were tested with the CS extinguished in its pre-exposure context than with the CS extinguished outside its pre-exposure context. The results were interpreted to mean that what was learned about the context-stimulus relation in pre-exposure enhanced control by that context over what was learned in extinction, thereby enhancing renewal when the rats were returned to the conditioning context for testing. Three experiments demonstrated, and examined the mechanisms that underlie, the renewal of extinguished discriminated operant behavior. In Experiment 1, rats were trained to perform 1 response (lever press or chain pull) in the presence of one discriminative stimulus (S; light or tone) in Context A, and to perform the other response in the presence of the other S in Context B. Next, each of the original S/response combinations was extinguished in the alternate context. When the S/response combinations were tested back in the context in which they had been trained, responding in the presence of S returned (an ABA renewal effect was observed). This renewal could not be due to differential context-reinforcer associations, suggesting instead that the extinction context inhibits either the response and/or the effectiveness of the S. Consistent with the latter mechanism, in Experiment 2, ABA renewal was still observed when both the extinction and renewal contexts inhibited the same response. However, in Experiment 3, previous extinction of the response in the renewing context (occasioned by a different S) reduced AAB renewal more than did extinction of the different response. Taken together, the results suggest at least 2 mechanisms of renewal after instrumental extinction. First, extinction performance is at least partly controlled by a direct inhibitory association that is formed between the context and the response. Second, in the discriminated operant procedure, extinction performance can sometimes be partly controlled by a reduction in the effectiveness of the S in the extinction context. A pervasive finding in animal models of substance abuse is that associations form quickly between contexts and drugs of abuse, such as cocaine. Studies of conditioned place preference (CPP) demonstrate that animals approach cues previously paired with cocaine. This is a commonly used preparation, but the configuration of the CPP apparatus differs across laboratories. Two common apparatus configurations for CPP are one compartment (in which the animal has access to the entire apparatus and spatial cues are irrelevant) or two compartments (in which access is restricted to one half of the apparatus and spatial cues are relevant). We compared the effects of acquisition and extinction of cocaine-induced CPP as a function of configuration. During CPP acquisition, C57BL/6J mice received cocaine paired with one tactile floor (conditioned stimulus; CS + ) and saline paired with the other (CS-). CS+ and CS- trials occurred on alternate days in one of three configurations: one-compartment (exposure to the entire apparatus during CS+ or CS-), two-compartment consistent position (exposure to CS+ or CS- in adjacent, spatially distinct compartments), or two-compartment alternating position (exposure to CS+ or CS- in adjacent compartments that alternated spatial locations across days). A stronger preference for the CS+ floor occurred in two- versus one-compartment groups, with the strongest preference observed when cocaine was paired with alternating chamber positions. In contrast, greater loss of preference occurred after extinction in a one-compartment procedure, regardless of one- or two-compartment acquisition history. These findings suggest that a two-compartment configuration facilitated acquisition but attenuated extinction of a cocaine-induced CPP. Two experiments explored whether forgetting of an association depended on previous extinction of a different association in rats. Experiment 1 found that when rats were conditioned and extinguished with flavor X, a subsequently acquired conditioned aversion to flavor Y was reduced by a 19-day retention interval, something that did not occur when X and the US were initially presented unpaired. Experiment 2 found that when rats received training and extinction in one of two tasks (conditioned aversion to sucrose in Experiment 2a, and running for water in a straight alley in Experiment 2b), subsequent learning of the alternative task was partially forgotten over the 19-day retention interval. These results are similar to those previously found when manipulating physical and conceptual contexts in rats and humans, respectively, and suggest that the passage of time may play a role similar to the one played by the change in physical or conceptual contexts on information retrieval. Four experiments with rats examined renewal of extinguished instrumental behavior when the reinforcement histories of the contexts were equated by giving complementary training and extinction of a different response (lever press and chain pull) in each Context. In Experiments 1 through 3, renewal occurred when the response was tested in the acquisition context (ABA) or outside the extinction context (AAB and ABC). Further, in Experiments 1 through 3, when both responses were simultaneously available, there was a clear preference for the response that was not in its extinction context. In Experiment 4, renewal was not reduced when testing occurred in a context that had been associated with extinction of the other instrumental response. The experimental designs rule out differential contextreinforcer associations being the only contributing mechanism of renewal, and also raise questions about configural and occasion-setting accounts. Three experiments used an ABA renewal paradigm to study deepening of response loss produced by extinction of reinstated or ABC renewed fear responses. In Experiment 1, rats were trained with two stimuli, Si and S2, in context A and extinguished to S1 in context B and S2 in context C, shocked in B but not in C, and subjected to additional extinction of S1 in B and S2 in C. Rats froze less to S1 than S2 when subsequently tested in A. In Experiments 2 and 3, following training of S1 and S2 in A, one group received extinction of S1 in B and S2 in C followed by extinction of S1 in C and S2 in B. This group froze less to S1 in A or to S2 in a novel context, D, than a group always extinguished to Si in B and S2 in C or a group extinguished to both S1 and S2 in B and C. These results show that additional extinction of a conditioned stimulus (conditional stimulus [CS]) exhibiting either reinstatement or ABC renewal renders that CS resistant to ABA renewal. Fear extinction can be defined as the weakening of the expression of a conditioned response (CR) by extended experience of nonreinforcement. Conceptually, two distinct models have been invoked to account for extinction. R. A. Rescorla and A. R. Wagner (1972, A theory of Pavlovian conditioning: Variations in the effectiveness of reinforcement and nonreinforcement, in A. H. B. W. F. Prokasy (Ed.), Classical conditioning: II. Current research and theory, pp. 64-99, New York, NY, Appleton-Century-Crofts) postulated that the number of exposure trials is the primary determinant of CR decrement, whereas C. R. Gallistel and J. Gibbon (2000, Time, rate, and conditioning, Psychological Review, Vol. 107, pp. 289-344) proposed that the decisive event is the cumulated exposure time to the nonreinforced conditioned stimulus (CS) elapsed after the last CS reinforcement. We evaluated these two accounts in a human differential fear conditioning study in which CR was measured with the fear-potentiated startle response. Cumulated duration of nonreinforcement fails to explain our findings, whereas the number of trials appeared critical. One experiment assessed predictions from the attentional theory of context processing (ATCP, J. M. Rosas, J. E. Callejas-Aguilera, M. M. Ramos-Alvarez, & M. J. F. Abad, 2006, Revision of retrieval theory of forgetting: What does make information context-specific? International Journal of Psychology & Psychological Therapy, Vol. 6, pp. 147-166) that extinction arouses attention to contextual stimuli. In a video-game method, participants learned a biconditional discrimination (RG+/BG--/RY-/BY+) either after extinction of another stimulus had occurred, or not. When contextual stimuli were relevant to solving the discrimination (i.e., all RG+/BG- trials occurred in one context and all RY-/BY+ in another), prior extinction of another stimulus facilitated the discrimination, as if extinction enhanced attention to the contexts. A series of experiments used rats to compare and contrast the effects of subjecting an already extinguished target conditioned stimulus (CS) to additional extinction in compound with either another extinguished or a nonextinguished CS. Exposure to either compound restored responding and their extinction deepened the loss of fear responses (freezing) to the target relative to a CS given equivalent extinction in isolation. This deepening was greater to the target extinguished in compound with the nonextinguished than with the extinguished CS. Summation tests showed that the target suppressed responding to an excitor or an excitatory context when it had been extinguished in compound with a nonextinguished but not with an extinguished CS. The results were interpreted to mean that additional extinction in compound with another extinguished CS resulted in the target acquiring the additional inhibition required to more fully oppose its original excitation. In contrast, additional extinction in compound with a nonextinguished CS resulted in the target acquiring not only the additional inhibition required to oppose its original excitation but also that of the nonextinguished CS, thereby converting the target into a net inhibitor. Three experiments with rats examined the effects of thinning the rate of reinforcement for the alternative behavior in the resurgence paradigm. In all experiments, pressing one lever (LI) was first reinforced and then extinguished while pressing a second alternative lever (L2) was then reinforced. When L2 responding was then extinguished, LI responses "resurged." Resurgence was always observed when L2 was reinforced on an unchanging reinforcement schedule during Phase 2. However, other rats received systematic decreases in the rate of L2 reinforcement before extinction of L2 began. Such a "thinning" procedure was predicted to reduce final resurgence by associating LI extinction with longer and longer periods without a reinforcer. The procedure did reduce the resurgence effect observed when L2 was put on extinction (Experiment 3). However, in each experiment, thinned groups also returned to LI responding, and continued to make LI responses, while the reinforcement schedule for L2 was being thinned. Fine-grained analysis of behavior in time suggested that this early resurgence was not due to adventitious reinforcement of LI, occasion setting of LI by reinforcer presentation, or the entrainment of LI as a schedule-induced interim behavior. The results are overall consistent with the hypothesis that resurgence is a renewal effect in which extinguished LI responding recovers when the context provided by the L2 reinforcement schedule is changed. Reinstatement—the return of an extinguished conditioned response (CR) after reexposure to the unconditioned stimulus (US)—and spontaneous recovery—the return of an extinguished CR with the passage of time-are 2 of 4 well-established phenomena that demonstrate that extinction does not erase the conditioned stimulus (CS)—US association. However, reinstatement of extinguished eyeblink CRs has never been demonstrated, and spontaneous recovery of extinguished eyeblink CRs has not been systematically demonstrated in rodent eyeblink conditioning. In Experiment 1, US reexposure was administered 24 hr prior to a reinstatement test. In Experiment 2, US reexposure was administered 5 mm prior to a reinstatement test. In Experiment 3, a long, discrete cue (a houselight), present in all phases of training and testing, served as a context within which each trial occurred to maximize context processing, which in other preparations has been shown to be required for reinstatement. In Experiment 4, an additional group was included that received footshock exposure, rather than US reexposure, between extinction and test, and contextual freezing was measured prior to test. Spontaneous recovery was robust in Experiments 3 and 4. In Experiment 4, context freezing was strong in a group given footshock exposure but not in a group given eye shock US reexposure. There was no reinstatement observed in any experiment. With stimulus conditions that produce eyeblink conditioning and research designs that produce reinstatement in other forms of classical conditioning, we observed spontaneous recovery but not reinstatement of extinguished eyeblink CRs. In two conditioned suppression experiments with rats as subjects, the authors examined two classes of accounts of spontaneous recovery of excitation and inhibition. One view suggests that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of inhibitory associations, whereas the other posits that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of second-learned associations. These accounts diverge in predictions concerning spontaneous recovery when the first-learned association is inhibitory and the second-learned association is excitatory. Using different designs, Experiments 1 and 2 found spontaneous recovery of both excitation and inhibition. A recent finding suggested that when extinction occurs shortly after acquisition, renewal of an extinguished fear response (fear-potentiated startle) to a light conditioned stimulus (CS) is diminished (Myers, Ressler, & Davis, 2006). The present study attempted to extend this finding using a white-noise CS and freezing as the behavioral measure of fear. In Experiments 1A and 1B, we observed renewal whether extinction occurred 10 min or 24 hr after acquisition. In contrast, renewal was not observed if test occurred 10 min after extinction (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 demonstrated that expression of extinction at the 10-min extinction-test interval was attenuated by a pretest subcutaneous injection of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inverse agonist FG7142. These findings suggest that renewal is influenced more by the extinction-test interval than the acquisition-extinction interval. Further, the failure to see renewal 10 mm after extinction suggests that there is a separate context memory that undergoes a different consolidation function than the CS-no US memory formed during extinction. Resurgence describes a procedure, a particular behavioral effect (increases in previously reinforced responding during the extinction of another response), and a behavioral process. There are three phases in a resurgence procedure: reinforcement of a target response, reinforcement of an alternative response, and extinction of both responses. This review examines independent variables in each phase that affect the recurrence (resurgence) of the target response in the third phase as they relate to an understanding of the process of resurgence and its implications for application. The present experiments assessed the necessity of central CRF in reinstatement of extinguished fear. Using the fear-potentiated startle procedure, rats were given light-shock pairings (fear conditioning) followed by light-alone extinction training. Rats were then given unsignaled shocks to reinstate fear to the light conditioned stimulus (CS). Intracerebroventricular administration of the CRF antagonist α-Helical CRF9-41 prior to reinstatement training dose-dependently prevented reinstatement. Further, α-Helical CRF9-41 administration prior to reinstatement training or the test for reinstatement of fear to the extinguished CS prevented reinstatement at both treatment times, suggesting that CRF activity is critical for this type of return of fear to an extinguished CS. The abolition of reinstatement by drug administration was not due to state-dependent learning, as rats treated with the drug prior to both reinstatement training or testing also failed to show reinstatement of fear. Local administration of α-Helical CRF9-41 in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis suggested that this area is a site at which central CRF is involved in this form of relapse. A series of experiments studied the effects of the interval between extinction trials on the loss of context conditioned freezing responses. Rats were shocked in one context (A) but not in another (B) and subjected to extinction trials in context A. In Experiment 1, massed trials produced more rapid loss than spaced trials. A shift from spaced to massed trials maintained this loss, but the shift from massed to spaced trials restored lost responses. Experiments 2-5 examined this effect of massed trials on responding across spaced trials. They provided evidence that (a) a single trial was as effective as multiple daily massed trials, (b) learning occurred on the first of the massed trials but not on later ones, and (c) the first trial reduced the amount learned across subsequent massed trials. Finally, alternating extinction trials in A and B produced more response loss across spaced trials than blocks of trials in A and B. The performance of conditioned responses (CRs) is diminished when trained subjects are tested in a novel context. This study tested the hypothesis that the flow of contextual information along the disynaptic "ESA" (entorhinal cortex-ventral subiculum-nucleus accumbens) pathway is responsible for context-related modulation of CRs. Rabbits received electrolytic or sham lesions of the ventral subiculum followed by discriminative avoidance conditioning and counterbalanced extinction sessions in the original training context, a novel context, and the original training context with a novel cue. Neuronal activity was recorded simultaneously in the nucleus accumbens, cingulate cortex, and basolateral amygdala. The lesions did not affect the acquisition of avoidance behavior or prevent the reduction of CRs in response to a novel cue. However, the lesions did reduce CR incidence during extinction, and they did eliminate a further novel-context-induced CR reduction found in controls. In addition, lesions disrupted context-dependent neuronal responses in the nucleus accumbens but not in the cingulate cortex or amygdala. Extinguishing a conditioned response (CR) has entailed separating the conditioned stimulus (CS) from the unconditioned stimulus (US). This research reveals that elimination of the rabbit nictitating membrane response occurred during continuous CS-US pairings. Initial training contained a mixture of 2 CS-US interstimulus intervals (ISIs), 150 ms and 500 ms. The CRs showed double peaks, one for each ISI. When the 150-ms ISI was removed, its CR peak showed 2 hallmarks of extinction: a decline across sessions and spontaneous recovery between sessions. When a further stage of training was introduced with a distinctive CS using the 150-ms ISI, occasional tests of the original, extinguished CS revealed another hallmark of extinction, specifically, strong recovery of the 150-ms peak. These results support both abstract and cerebellar models of conditioning that encode the CS into a cascade of microstimuli, while challenging theories of extinction that rely on changes in CS processing, US representations, and contextual control. A series of experiments studied reacquisition of fear reactions to a completely extinguished context. Reacquisition was rapid when reconditioning occurred as soon as the fear reactions were completely extinguished, showing that the original conditioning was intact. However, when reconditioning occurred after massive extinction training, fear reactions were depressed but then recovered across a long retention interval. This recovery was due to reconditioning and was similar to that produced by conditioning a massively preexposed context. Six experiments with rat subjects examined the effect of yohimbine, an alpha-2 adrenergic autoreceptor antagonist, on the extinction of conditioned fear to a tone. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated that systemic administration of yohimbine (1.0 mg/kg) facilitated a long-term decrease in freezing after extinction, and this depended on pairing drug administration with extinction training. However, Experiments 3 and 4 demonstrated that yohimbine did not eradicate the original fear learning: Freezing was renewed when the tone was tested outside of the extinction context. Experiments 5 and 6 found that the contextually specific attenuation of fear produced by yohimbine transferred to another extinguished conditional stimulus (CS) and not to a nonextinguished CS. The results suggest that yohimbine, when administered in the presence of a neutral context, creates a form of inhibition in that context that allows that specific context to reduce fear of an extinguished CS. Pavlovian conditioning models have led to cue-exposure treatments for drug abuse. However, conditioned responding to drug stimuli can return (be renewed) following treatment. Animal research and a previous study of social drinkers indicated that extinction is highly context dependent but that renewal could be reduced by the inclusion of a cue from the extinction context. This study extends this research to a clinical sample. Alcohol-dependent outpatients (N = 143) completed an extinction trial to reduce craving and salivation responses to alcohol cues. They were then randomized to renewal tests in either the same context as extinction, a different context, the different context containing an extinction cue, or the different context with cue plus a manipulation to increase the salience of the cue. Contrary to predictions, the different context did not produce the expected renewal effect. Although the generalization of extinction effects beyond the cue-exposure context is a positive clinical finding, it is inconsistent with basic research findings on the context dependence of extinction. In a series of 4 experiments, the effects of extinction on flavor preferences conditioned by mixing flavor cues with a nutrient were examined. In each experiment it was observed that rats preferred a flavor cue that had not undergone extinction to one that had. In addition, this preference was reversed in subjects trained thirsty (Experiments 1 and 2) if the associated nutrient had been devalued prior to the test or the preference for the nonextinguished cue was attenuated by nutrient devaluation in subjects trained hungry (Experiments 3 and 4). The results suggest that extinction may weaken associations between the flavor and the specific sensory properties of the nutrient and, for subjects trained hungry, between the flavor and the motivational components of the nutrient as well. The present experiments demonstrated that, in the rabbit nicititating membrane preparation, a conditioned response (CR) can be selectively eliminated in one portion of a conditioned stimulus (CS) while it is still paired with the unconditioned stimulus (US). Each was paired with the US by using a mixture of two CS-US interstimulus intervals (ISIs): 200 ms and 1,200 ms in Experiment 1; 150 ms and 500 ms in Experiment 2. The CRs showed double peaks, one for each ISI. Subsequently, one CS (A) was trained with only the longer ISI, whereas the other CS (B) continued to be trained with both ISIs. Consequently, the CR peak based on the shorter ISI disappeared for CSA but not for CSB. The later CR peaks during both CSA and CSB were maintained. The effect of D-cycloserine (DCS), an NMDA partial agonist, on extinction of fear was investigated in rats using the conditioned emotional response preparation. Fear extinction was facilitated when the first 4 trials occurred with a 30-mg/kg dose of DCS. However, extinguished fear was "renewed" regardless of the drug treatment when the rats were returned to the context in which fear had been conditioned. Additional results suggest that DCS's facilitation of extinction is a small but meaningful effect in the current method. The results suggest caution regarding the use of DCS as an adjunct to extinction: Although the drug may modestly facilitate extinction learning, it does not necessarily destroy the potential for relapse. Four experiments tested context switch effects on acquisition and extinction in human predictive learning. A context switch impaired probability judgments about a cue—outcome relationship when the cue was trained in a context in which a different cue underwent extinction. The context switch also impaired judgments about a cue trained in a context different from the extinction context, whenever this training was concurrent with extinction of another cue. After extinction, new cue—outcome relationships learned, even in a different task, became context specific. Moreover, renewal was consistently observed. Three experiments with rats and 2 with pigeons explored the effect of presenting 2 extinguished excitatory stimuli in compound. Four learning situations were used: Pavlovian magazine approach, Pavlovian fear conditioning, and instrumental discriminative instrumental learning in rats, as well as Pavlovian sign tracking in pigeons. All 5 experiments confirmed D. Reberg's (1972) observation that even after extinction of the individual stimuli, presenting them in compound evoked substantial responding. Moreover, nonreinforcement of that compound deepened extinction of an element more substantially than did additional presentation of that element alone. Such compound exposure reduced spontaneous recovery, reduced reinstatement, and slowed subsequent reconditioning. A well-demonstrated phenomenon in traditional Pavlovian conditioning research with humans is that of experimental extinction. In contrast, human evaluative conditioning research suggests that evaluative learning shows marked resistance to extinction. Here, the authors replicate both findings concurrently. Two differential fear conditioning experiments with an electrocutaneous stimulus as the unconditioned stimulus evidenced (a) sensitivity to extinction using an autonomic skin-conductance measure and (b) complete resistance to extinction using an affective-priming measure. Five experiments examined the reinstatement of fear (freezing) produced by recent reexposure to a dangerous context. Rats were trained to fear a conditioned stimulus (CS) and a distinctive context with shock. The CS was then extinguished. A 2-min interval between reexposure to the dangerous context and presentation of the extinguished CS in a different context reinstated freezing when the CS was tested the next day. Propranolol (a β-adrenergic antagonist) blocked reinstatement of extinguished fear without decreasing freezing to a nonextinguished CS, Administration of epinephrine (an adrenergic agonist) reinstated extinguished fear without reexposure to the dangerous context. Mechanisms for the retention and retrieval of conditioned taste aversions (CTAs) have yet to be fully defined. The authors explored relevant subcortical forebrain regions by tracking the expression of immediate early genes, c-fos and zif268. The supramammillary nucleus (SuM) was activated following both viscerally based CTA and somatically based inhibitory avoidance (IA). Excitotoxic lesions of the SuM before conditioning caused no disruption of acquisition but accelerated the extinction of both the CTA and IA. In contrast, lesions after CTA conditioning did not impair retention or retrieval. The present study indicates that the SuM is activated by memory-elicited discomfort during retrieval, suggesting that it plays a role in resisting the extinction of a long-term aversive memory. Five magazine approach experiments with rats and 1 sign-tracking experiment with pigeons explored the possibility of an analogue to spontaneous recovery of excitatory conditioning from extinction: spontaneous recovery of inhibitory conditioning from training. Stimuli were 1st treated as conditioned inhibitors and then as conditioned exciters or as irrelevamt to reinforcement. At issue was whether the passage of time after the 2nd treatment would allow partial restoration of the initial conditioned inhibition. The experiments differed in the design used to study recovery, the manner of reinforcing the inhibitor, the means of testing for recovery, the time interval allowed for recovery, and the species used. None of the experiments found evidence for recovery of the inhibitory learning with time, despite the concurrently measured presence of spontaneous recovery of excitatory conditioning after extinction.
