The article presents a study on the role of sodium (Na) and potassium (K) in enzyme function. It examines the diversity of monovalent cation-activated enzymes and discusses its theoretical and practical aspects. A derivation of the kinetic expressions for the analysis of cofactor (type I) and allosteric effector (type II) activation is offered. The article also discusses the implications on the molecular evolution of monovalent cation-activated enzymes in biochemistry and protein engineering.
