We have sought evidence for radiative decays of neutralinos produced in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8TeV. Events containing two photons plus large missing transverse energy were investigated. The observed event rate and the missing transverse energy distribution of the two-photon events are consistent with QCD predictions. Inferred limits on squark and gluino masses depend on the supersymmetry model parameters. The particular choices {mu}={minus}40GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and tan{beta}=1.5 lead to 90%-confidence-level asymptotic lower limits of 110 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and 140 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} for squarks and gluinos, respectively.

In $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV we find jet events with a rapidity gap topology. The number of hadrons in the rapidity interval $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}$ between leading-jet cones was sampled by charged tracks with ${P}_{T}g400$ MeV/c. We find excess trackless events beyond that expected in a smooth multiplicity distribution. In a control region outside $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}$ we see no excess. For $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}g0.8$, the fraction of excess trackless events, consistent with estimates based on exchange of color-singlet digluons, is $R(\mathrm{gap})=\frac{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{jet}}(\mathrm{gap})}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{jet}}}=0.0085\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.0012(\mathrm{stat})}_{\ensuremath{-}0.0012}^{+0.0024}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Color coherence effects in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions are observed and studied with CDF, the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We demonstrate these effects by measuring spatial correlations between soft and leading jets in multijet events. Variables sensitive to interference are identified by comparing the data to the predictions of various shower Monte Carlo programs that are substantially different with respect to the implementation of coherence.

This paper reports the measurement of the [ital B] meson and [ital b] quark cross sections through the decay chain [ital B][sup 0][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] K[sup *](892)[sup 0], [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], [ital K][sup *](892)[sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], using 4.3 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [ital qrts]=1.8 TeV. We obtain [sigma][sub [ital B]]=1.5[plus minus]0.7(stat)[plus minus]0.6(syst) [mu]b for [ital B][sup 0] mesons with transverse momentum [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]9.0 GeV/[ital c] and rapidity [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1.0. Using this result, we find [sigma][sub [ital b]]=3.7[plus minus]1.6(stat)[plus minus]1.5(syst) [mu]b for [ital b] quarks with [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]11.5 GeV/[ital c] and rapidity [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1.0. The [ital b] quark cross section is compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations and previous measurements.

We measure the Drell-Yan differential cross section [ital d][sup 2][sigma]/[ital dM] d[ital y][vert bar][sub [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1] over the mass range 11[lt][ital M][lt]150 GeV/[ital c][sup 2] using dielectron and dimuon data from [ital [bar p]p] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV. Our results show the 1/[ital M][sup 3] dependence that is expected from the naive Drell-Yan model. In comparison to the predictions of recent QCD calculations we find our data favor those parton distribution functions with the largest quark contributions in the [ital x] interval 0.006 to 0.03.

We present results of a search for a first-generation leptoquark [ital scrS][sub 1] in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using 4.05 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected during the 1988--1989 CDF run, we have searched for evidence of [ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1] production assuming that each leptoquark decays to an electron+quark pair with a branching ratio [beta]. Three events with two high energy electrons and two high energy jets were found, but are consistent with [ital Z][sup 0] decay. No events were found in the signal region. Assuming a short lived scalar leptoquark with Yukawa coupling strength [lambda][approx gt]2[times]10[sup [minus]7], we exclude [sigma][beta][sup 2][gt]55(4.0) pb at 95% C.L. for [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]]=45(125) GeV/[ital c][sup 2]. Using a Monte Carlo prediction for [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1]+[ital X]), we exclude [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]][lt]113(80) GeV/[ital c][sup 2] for [beta]=100(50)%.

We report the full reconstruction of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons through the decay chain ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} \ensuremath{\gamma}, J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. This exclusive ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ sample is used to measure the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$-meson production cross section times branching fractions. We obtain \ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B=3.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1.1}^{+1.2}$(syst) nb for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons decaying to J/\ensuremath{\psi} with ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}$g6.0 GeV/c and pseudorapidity \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\Vert}0.5. From this and the inclusive J/\ensuremath{\psi} cross section we calculate the inclusive b-quark cross section to be 12.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.5 \ensuremath{\mu}b for ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}^{\mathit{b}}$g8.5 GeV/c and \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{y}}^{\mathit{b}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}1.

The first prompt photon measurement from the CDF experiment at the Fermilab [ital p[bar p]] Collider is presented. Two independent methods are used to measure the cross section: one for high transverse momentum ([ital P][sub [ital T]]) and one for lower [ital P][sub [ital T]]. Comparisons to various theoretical calculations are shown. The cross section agrees qualitatively with QCD calculations but has a steeper slope at low [ital P][sub [ital T]].

The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 120 and 1000 GeV/[ital c][sup 2], in 1.8-TeV [ital p[bar p]] collisions. The data sample was collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Data are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations using two different clustering cone radii [ital R] in the jet definition. A quantitative test shows good agreement of data with the LO and NLO QCD predictions for a cone of [ital R]=1. The test using a cone of [ital R]=0.7 shows less agreement. The NLO calculation shows an improvement compared to LO in reproducing the shape of the spectrum for both radii, and approximately predicts the cone size dependence of the cross section.

Kinematic properties of four-jet events produced in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV have been studied using data with an integrated luminosity of 325 ${\mathrm{nb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected using the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1988-1989 Fermilab Collider run. The individual jet ${p}_{T}$ spectra and the angles between each jet pair are compared to the predictions of leading-order quantum chromodynamics for the double gluon bremsstrahlung process and good agreement is observed. In addition, a search for double parton scattering has been undertaken using variables sensitive to the topology of four-jet events. A small double parton content provides the best description of the data. We find $\frac{{N}_{\mathrm{DP}}}{{N}_{\mathrm{DB}}}={5.4}_{\ensuremath{-}2.0}^{+1.6}%$, where $N$ represents the number of events attributed to each process. We measure ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{DP}}={63}_{\ensuremath{-}28}^{+32}$ nb for jets having ${p}_{T}g25$ GeV/c in the pseudorapidity interval $|\ensuremath{\eta}|l3.5$.

We have searched for the $b$-flavored baryon decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ invariant-mass distribution we observe a flat distribution and a small number of events, consistent with no signal. Using the $b$-quark cross section measured by the CDF we put an upper limit on the $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}$ production fraction times the branching ratio $F({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b})B({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0})$ of 0.50\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 90% confidence level.

Inclusive [ital J]/[psi] and [psi](2[ital S]) production has been studied in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV using 2.6[plus minus]0.2 pb[sup [minus]1] of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The products of production cross section times branching fraction were measured as functions of [ital P][sub [ital T]] for [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and [psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. In the kinematic range [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]6 GeV/[ital c] and [vert bar][eta][vert bar][le]0.5 we get [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =6.88[plus minus]0.23(stat)[sub [minus]1.08][sup +0.93](syst) nb, and [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][psi](2[ital S])[ital X])[ital B]([psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =0.232[plus minus]0.051(stat)[sub [minus]0.032][sup +0.029](syst)nb. From these values we calculate the inclusive [ital b]-quark production cross section.

We search for the rare decay ${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ in 4.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. At the 95% confidence level, we find an upper limit on the partial decay width to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{e}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\nu})\ensuremath{\le}7.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$.

We present results of searches for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. The data sample was collected during 1988--1989 at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and has an integrated luminosity of 4.1 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have extended our previous search for {ital e}{mu} final states to include the {ital ee} and {mu}{mu} channels. In addition, we have searched for a low-transverse-momentum muon as a tag of the bottom quark in top decay events with a lepton and at least two jets. We obtain a lower limit on the top-quark mass of 91 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} at the 95% confidence level assuming standard-model charged-current decays.

The charge asymmetry of leptons from {ital W}-boson decay has been measured using {ital {bar p}p} data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. The observed asymmetry is well described by most of the available parton distributions.

The production and event topology of three-jet events produced in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV have been studied with the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron Collider. The distributions of the three-jet angular variables ({psi}{sup *} and cos{theta}{sup *}) and of the variables describing the energy sharing between jets ({ital x}{sub 3} and {ital x}{sub 4}) are found to agree well with tree-level QCD calculations. These distributions are predicted to have different shapes for different initial-state subprocesses (quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon). The data are consistent with the small expected contribution from quark-antiquark initial states, in agreement with theoretical expectations.

The ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ B\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} $^{0}$ average mixing parameter \ensuremath{\chi} has been extracted from e\ensuremath{\mu} and ee events produced in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. In a sample of 900 e\ensuremath{\mu} events, the like-sign to opposite-sign charge ratio R is measured to be 0.556\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.048(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.042}^{+0.035}$(syst). In the absence of mixing, the expected value of R would be 0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06. The corresponding number for 212 ee events is 0.573\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.116(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.047(syst) with an expected nonmixing value of 0.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07. The observed excess in R leads to a combined determination of \ensuremath{\chi}=0.176\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.031(stat+syst) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.032 (model), where the last uncertainty is due to Monte Carlo modeling.

The {ital W}{prime} is a charged, heavy, vector boson predicted to exist by some extensions of the standard model. We have searched for the processes {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} and {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{mu}{nu} for {ital M}{sub {ital W}{prime}}{gt}100 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV, using data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The nonobservation of these processes leads to a lower limit of 520 Gev/{ital c}{sup 2} (95% confidence level) on the mass of the {ital W}{prime}, assuming standard-strength couplings to three fermion generations.

An analysis of high-transverse-momentum electrons using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) of {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1800 GeV yields values of the production cross section times branching ratio for {ital W} and {ital Z}{sup 0} bosons of {sigma}({ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{ital WX}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu}{ital X})=2.19{plus minus}0.04(stat){plus minus}0.21(syst) nb and {sigma}({ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{ital Z}{sup 0}{ital X}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup +}{ital e{minus}}{ital X})=0.209{plus minus}0.013(stat) {plus minus}0.017(syst) nb. Detailed descriptions of the CDF electron identification, background, efficiency, and acceptance are included. Theoretical predictions of the cross sections that include a mass for the top quark larger than the {ital W} mass, current values of the {ital W} and {ital Z}{sup 0} masses, and higher-order QCD corrections are in good agreement with these measured values.

Using the Collider Detector at Fermilab, the {ital W}-boson differential cross section {ital d}{sigma}/{ital dP}{sub {ital T}} is measured using {ital W}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} events in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. A next-to-leading-order theoretical calculation agrees well with the data. The cross section ({sigma}) for {ital P}{sub {ital T}}{gt}50 GeV/{ital c} is measured to be 423{plus minus}58(stat){plus minus}108(syst) pb.

We have determined {ital m}{sub {ital W}}=79.91{plus minus}0.39 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} from an analysis of {ital W}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} and {ital W}{r arrow}{mu}{nu} data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. From this result and the world-average {ital Z} mass, the weak mixing angle is determined to be sin{sup 2}{theta}{sub {ital W}}=0.232{plus minus}0.008. An upper bound on the top-quark mass derived from this result is discussed.

The production and decay of top-quark--antiquark pairs is considered in the context of the standard model. The analysis is based on data with an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. An upper limit on the {ital t{bar t}} cross section is obtained, and the top quark in the mass range 28--72 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} is excluded at the 95% C.L. The same limits apply to a possible fourth-generation, charge {minus}1/3, {ital b}{prime} quark, decaying via the charged current.

A search for the top quark in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab is described. A study of events selected by requiring an energetic electron, missing transverse energy, and two or more jets excludes at 95% confidence level the standard-model production and decay of {ital t{bar t}} pairs if the top-quark mass is between 40 and 77 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. The observed electron + multijet data are consistent with {ital W}-boson production.

An analysis of {ital W}- and {ital Z}-boson production using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV yields {sigma}({ital W}{r arrow}{ital ev})/{sigma}({ital Z}{r arrow}{ital ee})=10.2{plus minus}0.8(stat){plus minus}0.4(syst). The width of the {ital W} boson, {Gamma}({ital W}), and a limit on the top-quark mass independent of decay mode are extracted from this measurement.
