Abstract

The $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{82}\mathrm{Ge}$ was re-investigated using the newly commissioned tape station BEDO at the electron-driven ISOL (isotope separation on line) facility ALTO operated by the Institut de Physique Nucl\'eaire, Orsay. The original motivation of this work was focused on the sudden occurrence in the light $N=49$ odd-odd isotonic chain of a large number of $J\ensuremath{\le}1$ states (positive or negative parity) in $^{80}\mathrm{Ga}$ by providing a reliable intermediate example, viz., $^{82}\mathrm{As}$. The extension of the $^{82}\mathrm{As}$ level scheme towards higher energies from the present work has revealed three potential ${1}^{+}$ states above the already known one at 1092 keV. In addition our data allow ruling out the hypothesis that the 843 keV level could be a ${1}^{+}$ state. A detailed analysis of the level scheme using both an empirical core-particle coupling model and a fully microscopic treatment within a Skyrme-QRPA (quasiparticle random-phase approximation) approach using the finite-rank separable approximation was performed. From this analysis two conclusions can be drawn: (i) the presence of a large number of low-lying low-spin negative parity states is due to intruder states stemming from above the $N=50$ shell closure, and (ii) the sudden increase, from $^{82}\mathrm{As}$ to $^{80}\mathrm{Ga}$, of the number of low-lying ${1}^{+}$ states and the corresponding Gamow-Teller fragmentation are naturally reproduced by the inclusion of tensor correlations and couplings to 2p-2h excitations.

Abstract

The ${}^{12}$C(${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O)${}^{14}$C and ${}^{12,13}$C(${}^{18}$O,${}^{17}$O)${}^{13,14}$C reactions are studied at 84 MeV. Mass distributions and energy spectra of the ejectiles are measured, indicating the selectivity of these reactions to populate two- and one-neutron configurations in the states of the residual nucleus, respectively. The measured absolute cross-section angular distributions are analyzed by exact finite range coupled reaction channel calculations based on a parameter free double-folding optical potential. The form factors for the (${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O) reaction are extracted within an extreme cluster and independent particles scheme with shell-model-derived coupling strengths. The results show that the measured cross sections are accurately described for the first time without the need for any arbitrary scaling factor. The (${}^{18}$O,${}^{16}$O) reaction is thus found to be a powerful tool for quantitative spectroscopic studies of pair configurations in nuclear states.

Abstract

The level structures of the very neutron-rich nuclei $^{128}\mathrm{Pd}$ and $^{126}\mathrm{Pd}$ have been investigated for the first time. In the $r$-process waiting-point nucleus $^{128}\mathrm{Pd}$, a new isomer with a half-life of $5.8(8)\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ is proposed to have a spin and parity of ${8}^{+}$ and is associated with a maximally aligned configuration arising from the ${g}_{9/2}$ proton subshell with seniority $\ensuremath{\upsilon}=2$. For $^{126}\mathrm{Pd}$, two new isomers have been identified with half-lives of 0.33(4) and $0.44(3)\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$. The yrast ${2}^{+}$ energy is much higher in $^{128}\mathrm{Pd}$ than in $^{126}\mathrm{Pd}$, while the level sequence below the ${8}^{+}$ isomer in $^{128}\mathrm{Pd}$ is similar to that in the $N=82$ isotone $^{130}\mathrm{Cd}$. The electric quadrupole transition that depopulates the ${8}^{+}$ isomer in $^{128}\mathrm{Pd}$ is more hindered than the corresponding transition in $^{130}\mathrm{Cd}$, as expected in the seniority scheme for a semimagic, spherical nucleus. These experimental findings indicate that the shell closure at the neutron number $N=82$ is fairly robust in the neutron-rich Pd isotopes.

Abstract

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-72,Zn-74. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of Ge-76 at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2(1)(+) state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method with the Koln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) states in Zn-72,Zn-74 were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2(1)(+)-> 0(+)) = 385(39) and 370(33) e(2) fm(4), respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge, and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point toward a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete gamma-softness at N = 42.
