Abstract: We present results for the charged-particle multiplicity distribution at midrapidity in Au-Au collisions at square root of [s(NN)] = 130 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. For the 5% most central collisions we find dN(ch)/d eta(vertical line eta = 0) = 622+/-1(stat)+/-41(syst). The results, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a steady rise of the particle density per participating nucleon with centrality.

Abstract: A measurement of direct photon production in {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 1.5 GeV/c . The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis of quark-gluon-plasma formation.

Abstract: Three-particle correlations have been measured for identified {pi}{sup -} from central 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions by the WA98 experiment at CERN. A substantial contribution of the genuine three-body correlation has been found as expected for a mainly chaotic and symmetric source.

4. Formation of hill and valley structures on Si(001) vicinal surfaces studied by spot-profile-analyzing LEED

Abstract: Formation of ‘‘hill-and-valley’’ structures on Si~001! vicinal surfaces induced by Au adsorption which accompanies formation of the Si~001!533.2-Au reconstruction, was studied by in situ high-resolution lowenergy electron diffraction. The ‘‘hill-and-valley’’ structures are composed of ~001! terraces and ~119! facets under the equilibrium condition independent of the miscut angle ~0.5–8°! of the substrate surfaces. This does not depend on sample treatments and the similar structures are obtained by annealing after Au deposition at room temperature as well as Au deposition at high temperature. In situ observation during annealing indicates that commensurate fivefold structures such as 533 and A2633 that were previously observed are not formed on the Si~001! surface and only the 533.2 structure is formed in this system. Double domain structures initially formed in such a way that the 533.2 and 3.235 domains are formed on the 231 and 132 terraces, respectively, finally transforms into single domain 533.2 structure where the fivefold direction is parallel to the miscut direction.

Abstract: Neutral pion production in central 158A GeV [sup 208]Pb+ [sup 208] Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The [pi][sup 0] transverse mass spectrum has been analyzed in terms of a thermal model with hydrodynamic expansion. The high accuracy and large kinematic coverage of the measurement allow one to limit previously noted ambiguities in the extracted freeze-out parameters. The results are shown to be sensitive to the shape of the velocity distribution at freeze-out. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society ]

Abstract: In this paper Au+Au collisions at 11.6A GeV/c are characterized by two global observables: the energy measured near zero degrees (E{sub ZCAL}) and the total event multiplicity. Particle spectra are measured for different event classes that are defined in a two-dimensional grid of both global observables. For moderately central events ({sigma}/{sigma}{sub int}{lt}12{percent}) the proton dN/dy distributions do not depend on E{sub ZCAL} but only on the event multiplicity. In contrast the shape of the proton transverse spectra shows little dependence on the event multiplicity. The change in the proton dN/dy distributions suggests that different conditions are formed in the collision for different event classes. These event classes are studied for signals of new physics by measuring pion and kaon spectra and yields. Abstract: A systematic study of the spectra and yields of K{sup +} and K{sup {minus}} is reported by experiment E866 as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at 11.6A GeV/c. The invariant transverse spectra for both kaon species are well described by exponentials in m{sub t}, with inverse slope parameters that are largest at midrapidity and which increase with centrality. The inverse slopes of the K{sup +} spectra are slightly larger than the inverse slopes of the K{sup {minus}} spectra. The kaon rapidity density peaks at midrapidity with the K{sup +} distribution wider in rapidity than K{sup {minus}}. The integrated total yields of K{sup +} and K{sup {minus}} increase nonlinearly and steadily with the number of projectile participants. The yield per participant for kaons is two to three times larger than the yield from N-N collisions. This enhancement suggests that the majority of kaons in central Au+Au reactions are produced in secondary hadronic collisions. There is no evidence for an onset of additional kaon production from a possible small volume of baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma. The differences between K{sup +} and K{sup {minus}} rapidity distributions and transverse spectra are consistent with a lower phase space for K{sup {minus}} production due tomore » a higher energy threshold. Abstract: The production of neutral pions in 158A GeV {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Transverse momentum spectra are studied for the range 0.3{le}m{sub T}{minus}m{sub 0}{le}4.0 GeV /c . The results for central collisions are compared to various models. The centrality dependence of the neutral pion spectral shape and yield is investigated. An invariance of the spectral shape and a simple scaling of the yield with the number of participating nucleons is observed for centralities with greater than about 30thinspthinspparticipating nucleons. Abstract: Antiproton production in 11.7A GeV/c Au+Au collisions over a wide transverse-mass coverage was studied using the AGS-E866 experimental apparatus. The mean transverse kinetic energy increases as a function of centrality and is similar to that of protons. Abstract: Systematic results are presented on proton, deuteron, and triton emission from the target spectator region in collisions of 10.20A GeV gold projectiles with a gold target. A forward hodoscope utilizes detection of projectile spectator fragments to determine the orientation of the reaction plane, event by event. The directed flow {l_angle}p{sub x}{r_angle} is determined as a function of pseudorapidity. Projectile spectator energy is used to estimate impact parameters. Results are compared to current theoretical models ARC, ART, and RQMD. In all cases good agreement with theory is obtained for calculations utilizing a pure cascade without nuclear potential contributions. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Semi-inclusive proton and pion distributions from central Au+Au reactions at 11.6A GeV/c have been measured. The proton rapidity distribution shows significantly increased stopping compared to lighter systems, providing strong evidence for the formation of a state of matter with baryon density substantially greater than normal nuclear matter. Unlike reactions at this energy induced by lighter heavy ions, at low m{sub t}-m{sub 0} the proton invariant spectra deviate from a single exponential shape and become flatter, while {pi}{sup {minus}} spectra are found to rise faster than the {pi}{sup +} spectra. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We report measurements of proton emission at target rapidities for minimum bias and central collisions of 14.6AGeV/c {sup 28}Si with Al, Cu, and Au nuclei as well as minimum bias and central collisions of 11.7AGeV/c {sup 197}Au with Au nuclei. Results for deuteron emission are also reported for the Si+Au reaction. The spectra span the laboratory angular range of 50{degree}{le}{theta}{le}130{degree} and kinetic energy range of 40MeV{le}E{sub kin}{le}225MeV. Inverse slopes of proton spectra and proton dN/d{eta} values in the kinetic energy range 50MeV{le}E{sub kin}{le}110MeV are reported. The inverse slopes are 40{endash}80 MeV for the various systems, generally increasing with increasing pseudorapidity. The dN/d{eta} values for A+A collisions within the restricted kinetic energy interval are compared to those for protons from p+Au in the literature. All pseudorapidity distributions have very similar shapes. The experimental results have been compared to the predictions of the nucleon-nucleon collision models ARC and RQMD. The predictions made by these two models for the distribution of protons at target rapidities are very similar to each other. Abstract: The ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}X$ reaction with a missing mass resolution of $1.4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$ (FWHM) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with a beam momentum of $1.92\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$. No peak structure corresponding to the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 15\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} in the laboratory frame is obtained to be $0.26\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{b}/\mathrm{sr}$ in the mass region of $1.51--1.55\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$. The upper limit of the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ decay width is obtained to be 0.72 and 3.1 MeV for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{P}=1/{2}^{+}$ and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{P}=1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, respectively, using the effective Lagrangian approach.

Abstract: Angular distributions of the differential cross section, analyzing power, spin-flip probability, and spin-flip asymmetry in the excitation of the first 2{sup +} states in {sup 48}Ti and {sup 50}Ti were measured at incident energies of 11 and 18 MeV using the ({ital p},{ital p}{prime}{gamma}) coincidence technique with a polarized proton beam. The angular distributions show strong incident energy and target dependence. The results were analyzed in terms of a macroscopic coupled-channels method based on the vibrational model and of the microscopic distorted wave Born approximation based on shell-model wave functions and effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. The spin-flip asymmetry is quite sensitive to the spin-dependent part in the interaction that causes inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra and yields of hadrons are measured by the PHENIX collaboration in Au+Au collisions at √s NN =130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The time-of-flight resolution allows identification of pions to transverse momenta of 2 GeV/c and protons and antiprotons to 4 GeV/c. The yield of pions rises approximately linearly with the number of nucleons participating in the collision, while the number of kaons, protons, and antiprotons increases more rapidly. The shape of the momentum distribution changes between peripheral and central collisions. Simultaneous analysis of all the p T spectra indicates radial collective expansion, consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models. Hydrodynamic analysis of the spectra shows that the expansion velocity increases with collision centrality and collision energy. This expansion boosts the particle momenta, causing the yield from soft processes to exceed that for hard to large transverse momentum, perhaps as large as 3 GeV/c.

Abstract: We present a detailed angle-resolved photoemission study on the layered transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS1.2Se0.8 in the commensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. A drastic reduction in the spectral weight along the high symmetry line GammaM, particularly around the point M, is observed when s-polarized light was used. This implies that the initial state must be symmetric with respect to a mirror plane perpendicular to the line GammaK, which is consistent with conventional band calculations in the absence of the CDW. We conclude that there is only a limited amount of modification of the electronic structure of 1T-TaS1.2Se0.8 in the commensurate CDW phase due to the CDW-related potential.

Abstract: In a previous publication [T. Abbott et al., E802 Collaboration, Phys. Rev. C 63, 064602 (2001); 64, 029901(E) (2001)], measurements of the A dependence and pseudorapidity interval $(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ dependence of midrapidity ${E}_{T}$ distributions in a half-azimuth $(\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi})$ electromagnetic calorimeter were presented for $p+\mathrm{Be},$ $p+\mathrm{Au},$ O+Cu, Si+Au, and Au+Au collisions at the BNL-AGS. The validity of the ``nuclear geometry'' characterization versus $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ was illustrated by plots of the ${E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ distribution in each $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ interval in units of the measured $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ in the same $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ interval for $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions. These plots, with aperture corrected scale in the physically meaningful units of number of average observed $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions, were nearly universal as a function of $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta},$ confirming that the reaction dynamics for ${E}_{T}$ production at midrapidity at AGS energies is governed by the number of projectile participants and can be well characterized by measurements in apertures as small as $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}=0.3.$ A key ingredient in these analyses is the probability ${p}_{0}$ for no signal to be detected in a given aperture $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ for the fundamental $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collision. In fact the measured $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ is biased and the true $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}^{\mathrm{true}}$ for the detector aperture is the measured value times $1\ensuremath{-}{p}_{0}.$ The issues and merits of measuring the ${E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ distribution in units of $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ or $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}^{\mathrm{true}}$ in the same $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}$ interval are presented and discussed. This method has application at RHIC, where p-$p$ data could be used as the reference distribution for two participants. The ${E}_{T}$ distributions for $B+A$ collisions, with ${E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ scale normalized by $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p\ensuremath{-}p}^{\mathrm{true}}$ in the same aperture for $p\ensuremath{-}p$ collisions, would then be given directly in the popular unit ``per participant-pair'' [K. Abstract: Two-pion correlation functions are analyzed at mid-rapidity for three systems (14.6 A-GeV Si+Al, Si+Au, and 11.6 A-GeV Au+Au), seven distinct centrality conditions, and different kT bins in the range 0.1--0.5 GeV/c. Source reference frames are determined from fits to the Yano-Koonin source parameterization. Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters are shown to scale linearly with both number of projectile and total participants as obtained from a Glauber model calculation. A finite emission duration that increases linearly with system/centrality is also reported. The mT dependence of the Bertsch-Pratt radii is measured for the central Si+Au and Au+Au systems. The system/centrality dependence is investigated separately for both high and low mT regions.

Abstract: Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone e, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low pT. A breakdown of this e scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT >1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract: Data from Au+ Au interactions at s(NN)=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.

Abstract: Distributions of event-by-event fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum and mean transverse energy near mid-rapidity have been measured in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. By comparing the distributions to what is expected for statistically independent particle emission, the magnitude of nonstatistical fluctuations in mean transverse momentum is determined to be consistent with zero. Also, no significant nonrandom fluctuations in mean transverse energy are observed. By constructing a fluctuation model with two event classes that preserve the mean and variance of the semi-inclusive p(T) or e(T) spectra, we exclude a region of fluctuations in roots(NN)=130 GeV Au+Au collisions.

Abstract: Identified ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, ${K}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, $p$, and $\overline{p}$ transverse momentum spectra at midrapidity in $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}130\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. Within errors, all midrapidity particle yields per participant are found to be increasing with the number of participating nucleons. There is an indication that ${K}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, $p$, and $\overline{p}$ yields per participant increase faster than the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$ yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta $({p}_{T}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2\mathrm{GeV}/c)$, $\overline{p}$ and $p$ yields are comparable to the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$ yields.

Abstract: Two-pion correlations in roots(NN) = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at roots(NN) = 4.1 , 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R-out/R-side) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T) .

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at roots(NN) = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.010( syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380 +/- 60(stat) +/- 200(syst ) mub per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons and for neutral pions in the range 1 Gev/c < P-T < 5 GeV/c have been measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au + Au collisions at rootS(NN) = 130 GeV. At high p(T) the spectra from peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with scaling the spectra from p + p collisions by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The spectra from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to the binary-scaled p + p expectation, and also when compared to similarly binary-scaled peripheral collisions, indicating a novel nuclear-medium effect in central nuclear collisions at RHIC energies.

Abstract: The first measurement of energy produced transverse to the beam direction at RHIC is presented. The mid-rapidity transverse energy density per participating nucleon rises steadily with the number of participants, closely paralleling the rise in charged-particle density, such that E_T / N_ch remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. The energy density calculated via Bjorken's prescription for the 2% most central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV is at least epsilon_Bj = 4.6 GeV/fm^3 which is a factor of 1.6 larger than found at sqrt(s_NN)=17.2 GeV (Pb+Pb at CERN).

Abstract: Measurements of the A dependence and pseudorapidity interval $(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ dependence of midrapidity ${E}_{T}$ distributions in a half-azimuth (\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi}) electromagnetic calorimeter are presented for $p+\mathrm{Be},$ $p+\mathrm{Au},$ O+Cu, Si+Au, and Au+Au collisions at the BNL-AGS (Alternating-Gradient Synchrotron). The shapes of the upper edges of midrapidity ${E}_{T}$ distributions as a function of the pseudorapidity interval \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} in the range 0.3 to 1.3, roughly centered at midrapidity, are observed to vary with \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}, like multiplicity---the upper edges of the distributions flatten as \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} is reduced. At the typical fixed upper percentiles of ${E}_{T}$ distributions used for nuclear geometry characterization by centrality definition---7 percentile, 4 percentile, 2 percentile, 1 percentile, 0.5 percentile---the effect of this variation in shape on the measured projectile ${A}_{p}$ dependence for ${}^{16}\mathrm{O},$ ${}^{28}\mathrm{Si},$ ${}^{197}$Au projectiles on an Au target is small for the ranges of \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} and percentile examined. The ${E}_{T}$ distributions for $p+\mathrm{Au}$ and $p+\mathrm{Be}$ change in shape with \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}; but in each \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval the shapes of the $p+\mathrm{Au}$ and $p+\mathrm{Be}$ distributions remain indentical with each other---a striking confirmation of the absence of multiple-collision effects at midrapidity at AGS energies. The validity of the nuclear geometry characterization versus \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} is illustrated by plots of the ${E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta})$ distribution in each \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval in units of the measured $〈{E}_{T}(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}){〉}_{p+\mathrm{Au}}$ in the same \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval for $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions. These plots, in the physically meaningful units of ``number of average $p+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions,'' are nearly universal as a function of \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}, confirming that the reaction dynamics for ${E}_{T}$ production at midrapidity at AGS energies is governed by the number of projectile participants and can be well characterized by measurements in apertures as small as \ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi}, \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}=0.3.

Abstract: Proton and deuteron distributions from 11.6A GeV/c Au + Au collisions measured by the E802 Collaboration in experiment E-866 are presented. The invariant yield of protons and deuterons is studied as a function of the transverse mass for different cuts of rapidity and centrality. At low mt−m0 the proton and deuteron invariant spectra deviate from a single exponential shape. The average mt as function of centrality and rapidity is used to explore the effect of collective transverse flow in the reaction. The ratio of the deuteron to squared proton yield as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and centrality is used to probe the coalescence model of deuteron production. This ratio is constant as a function of rapidity only for the most central cuts and decreases with the centrality for every rapidity cut. The ratio of the differential cross section of the deuteron to the squared differential cross section of the proton, for the most central cut, is not constant as a function of mt−m0.

Abstract: Charged kaon production has been measured in Si+Al and Si+Au collisions at 14.6 A GeV/c, and Au+Au collisions at 11.1 A GeV/c by Experiments 859 and 866 (the E--802 Collaboration) at the BNL AGS. Invariant transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for both K+ and K- are presented. The centrality dependence of rapidity-integrated kaon yields is studied. Strangeness enhancement is observed as an increase in the slope of the kaon yield with the total number of participants as well as the yield per participant. The enhancement starts with peripheral Si+Al and Si+Au collisions (relative to N+N) and appears to saturate for a moderate number of participating nucleons in Si+Au collisions. It is also observed to increase slowly with centrality in Au+Au collisions, to a level in the most central Au+Au collisions that is greater than that found in central Si+A collisions. The enhancement factor for $K^+$ production are 3.0 +-0.2(stat.) +-0.4(syst.) and 4.0 +-0.3(stat.) +-0.5(syst.), respectively, for the most central 7% Si+Au collisions and the most central 4% Au+Au collisions relative to N+N at the correponding beam energy., Comment: RevTeX style, 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Abstract: Strong ground-state ( p,t) transitions in nuclei of neutron number approx. = 50 --82 are found to show anomalous analyzing powers which cannot be reproduced by direct one-step distorted-wave Born-approximation calculations at all. The anomalies are explained as an interference between ( p,d)(d,t) sequential processes and the one-step process. The cross section of the sequential processes is as large as that of the one-step process in the L=0 ( p,t) reactions. The neutron-number dependence of the anomalies is interpreted.

Abstract: A neutron-number ($N$) dependence of analyzing powers $A(\ensuremath{\theta})$ has been observed in ($\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}$,$t$) reaction leading to the quadrupole vibrational states (${2}_{1}^{+}$) in $^{98}\mathrm{Ru}$, $^{102,108}\mathrm{Pd}$, $^{114}\mathrm{Cd}$, $^{116}\mathrm{Sn}$, and $^{120,126}\mathrm{Te}$. Although analyzing powers for the ground-state transitions $A(\ensuremath{\theta},{0}_{g}^{+})$ are very similar to each other, $A(\ensuremath{\theta},{2}_{1}^{+})$ for the nuclei belonging to the beginning of the $N=50\ensuremath{-}82$ shell are markedly different, having almost opposite signs, from those for nuclei belonging to the latter half of the shell.NUCLEAR REACTIONS $^{100}\mathrm{Ru}$, $^{104,110}\mathrm{Pd}$, $^{116}\mathrm{Cd}$, $^{118}\mathrm{Sn}$, $^{122,128}\mathrm{Te}$($\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}$,$t$), $E=22.0$ MeV; measured $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\theta})$, ${A}_{y}(\ensuremath{\theta})$; enriched targets.

Abstract: Drastic changes of 0/sup +//sub g/..-->..0/sup +//sub g/ (p, t) analyzing powers for the isotopes Zr, Mo, Ru, and Pd are explained in terms of interference between one-step and (p,d)(d,t) sequential transfer amplitudes of comparable magnitudes. Dependence of the analyzing powers on reaction Q values, incident energies, and nuclear structures is interpreted from the interference. Analyzing powers for (t,p) reactions can be understood similarly. A test of time reversal invariance in nuclear reactions with use of the analyzing powers for (p,t) and (t,p) reactions is discussed.

40. Polarizations and cross sections ofΛhyperons produced at backward angles in the reaction π+12C→Λ+X at 4 GeV/c

Abstract: We have measured the polarizations and the differential cross sections of the produced /Lambda/'s at backward angles (70/degree//lt//theta//sub lab//lt/145/degree/) using a large-aperture spectrometer. The angular range is kinematically not accessible in interactions of the incident pions with free nucleons. The calculated polarizations in terms of superposition of an elementary process incorporating Fermi motion of nucleons in the nucleus are opposite in sign to the observed ones, while a quark-parton model of /Lambda/ production with a Thomas precession effect reproduces both the polarizations and the cross sections well.

Abstract: Two very different types of angular distributions, one having a normal bell shape and the other being much more constant with angle were observed in the reaction $^{144}\mathrm{Nd}$($^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{14}\mathrm{C}$) for two well-known ${2}^{+}$ states of $^{142}\mathrm{Nd}$. The fits to these angular distributions using the distorted-wave Born approximation and/or coupled-channel Born approximation confirms the conclusion that the data give definite evidence for the importance of multistep processes. A comparison with the reaction $^{144}\mathrm{Nd}(p, t)$ is also discussed.

Abstract: The analyzing power for the reaction /sup 208/Pb(p,t)/sup 206/Pb leading to the unnatural parity 3/sup +/ state at 1.34 MeV was measured at E/sub p/ = 22.0 MeV. The cross section of this reaction was fitted well by a two-step (p,d)(d,t) calculation, but the analyzing power was not at all. The reaction mechanism of this transition is not explained by only the sequential transfer processes.

Abstract: As evidence of a phase transition of the interference between direct and inelastic multistep processes in two-neutron pickup reactions exciting the first 2/sup +/ state of spherical vibrational nuclei, a destructive interference has been observed in /sup A+/sup 2//Pd(p,t)/sup A/Pd(2/sup +//sub 1/) reactions. A strong similarity between the /sup 104/ /sup 108/ /sup 110/Pd(p,t)/sup 102/ /sup 106/ /sup 108/Pd(2/sup +//sub 1/) cross sections and the /sup 158/Gd(p,t)/sup 156/Gd(2/sup +//sub 1/) cross section is discussed.

Abstract: Measurements of the cross section, vector analyzing power, iT/sub 11/, and all three tensor analyzing powers, T/sub 20/, T/sub 21/, and T/sub 22/, have been made for the (d-arrow-right, /sup 6/Li) reactions on /sup 12/C and /sup 16/O at bombarding energies of 18 and 22 MeV. The observed large values of the tensor analyzing powers do not agree with distorted-wave Born approximation calculations assuming a one-step alpha-cluster transfer.

Abstract: A drastic difference of anomalous 0/sup +//sub g/..-->..0/sup +//sub g/ (p,t) analyzing powers on /sup 92/Zr and /sup 94/Mo is explained in terms of partial cross sections sigma/sub m//sub p/m/sub t/ with m/sub p/ = m/sub t/ = +- 1/2. It results from sigma/sub -1/2ts-1/2/roughly-equal0 only for /sup 94/Mo due to a completely destructive interference between the one-step and the two-step (p,d)(d,t) sequential process.

Abstract: A marked difference between analyzing powers for reactions /sup 128/Te(p,t)/sup 126/Te(2/sub 1//sup +/) and /sup 110/Pd(p,t)/sup 108/Pd(2/sub 1//sup +/) with polarized protons has been observed, while the ground-state transitions have shown similar analyzing powers. The difference is accounted for as a result of a phase change of the interference between direct and inelastic multistep processes in two-neutron pickup reactions. The origin of this phase change is elucidated on the basis of the microscopic description of the collective quadrupole oscillation of nuclei.

Abstract: An investigation is made of the /sup 142/Nd(/sup 18/O,/sup 16/O)/sup 144/Nd reaction, in which it was found that the first excited 2/sup +/ state was populated strongly with an angular distribution characteristic of one-step transfer. This is in contrast to an earlier result for the inverse-type reaction /sup 144/Nd(/sup 12/C,/sup 14/C)/sup 142/Nd, in which the first excited state was found to be populated dominantly by a two-step process and to have an anomalous angular distribution. 50. Sn119,117(p,t) reactions at 52 MeV

Abstract: The /sup 119,117/Sn(p,t) reactions have been studied at E/sub p/ = 52 MeV. The angle integrated cross sections (10/sup 0/ < or = theta/sub c.m./ < or = 50/sup 0/) for l = 0 and 2 transfers have been compared with the corresponding ones in the neighboring even isotopes. About a 50% reduction in strength for g.s. (l = 0) transitions in odd isotopes has been observed. It is in agreement with the interpretation of Fleming et al. as due to a blocking effect. However, in contrast to the observation of Fleming et al., it is argued that such blocking may not be present for l = 2 transitions in these nuclei.
