Abstract

Production cross sections for neutron-rich nuclei from the fragmentation of a ${}^{82}$Se beam at 139 MeV/u were measured. The longitudinal momentum distributions of 126 neutron-rich isotopes of elements $11\ensuremath{\le}Z\ensuremath{\le}32$ were scanned using an experimental approach of varying the target thickness. Production cross sections with beryllium and tungsten targets were determined for a large number of nuclei including several isotopes first observed in this work. These are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements $22\ensuremath{\le}Z\ensuremath{\le}25$ (${}^{64}$Ti, ${}^{67}$V, ${}^{69}$Cr, and ${}^{72}$Mn). One event was registered consistent with ${}^{70}$Cr and another one with ${}^{75}$Fe. The production cross sections are correlated with ${Q}_{g}$ systematics to reveal trends in the data. The results presented here confirm our previous results from a similar measurement using a ${}^{76}$Ge beam and can be explained with a shell model that predicts a subshell closure at $N=34$ around $Z=20$. This is demonstrated by systematic trends and calculations with the abrasion-ablation model that are sensitive to separation energies.

Abstract

We report on pump-power-dependent emission features of a nonthermalized and interacting dynamical condensate of exciton polaritons. The system based on a planar AlAs/AlGaAs microcavity sample with twelve GaAs quantum wells in the active region is investigated comprehensively by measuring the energy-momentum dispersion characteristics, the spatial coherence, and the photon statistics under resonant, fs-pulsed optical excitation at high momentum. We observe a significant polariton-population-dependent modification of the emission signatures above the quantum degeneracy. The nonequilibrium polariton condensate is confirmed by its polaritonic energy-momentum dispersion as well as excitation-power-dependent coherence properties and its photon statistics, being different from that of an ideal coherent state. The polaritonic condensate is characterized by a spatial coherence length of up to 4 \ensuremath{\mu}m and a super-Poissonian photon statistic of the emitted light well above threshold. Results obtained in second-order photon autocorrelation measurements in momentum-space resolved spectroscopy indicate polariton repulsive interaction throughout the condensate and a spatial coherence length being shorter than the condensate extension of 20--30 \ensuremath{\mu}m.

Abstract

Beta-delayed proton emission from nuclides in the neighborhood of 100Sn was studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The nuclei were produced by fragmentation of a 120 MeV/nucleon 112Sn primary beam on a Be target. Beam purification was provided by the A1900 Fragment Separator and the Radio Frequency Fragment Separator. The fragments of interest were identified and their decay was studied with the NSCL Beta Counting System (BCS) in conjunction with the Segmented Germanium Array (SeGA). The nuclei 96Cd, 98Ing, 98Inm and 99In were identified as beta-delayed proton emitters, with branching ratios bp = 5.5(40)%, 5.5+3 -2%, 19(2)% and 0.9(4)%, respectively. The bp for 89Ru, 91,92Rh, 93Pd and 95Ag were deduced for the first time with bp = 3+1.9 -1.7%, 1.3(5)%, 1.9(1)%, 7.5(5)% and 2.5(3)%, respectively. The bp = 22(1)% for 101Sn was deduced with higher precision than previously reported. The impact of the newly measured bp values on the composition of the type-I X-ray burst ashes was studied.

Abstract

The location of electron capture heat sources in the crust of accreting neutron stars depends on the masses of extremely neutron-rich nuclei. We present first results from a new implementation of the time-of-flight technique to measure nuclear masses of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The masses of 16 neutron-rich nuclei in the scandium -- nickel range were determined simultaneously, improving the accuracy compared to previous data in 12 cases. The masses of $^{61}${V}, $^{63}${Cr}, $^{66}${Mn}, and $^{74}${Ni} were measured for the first time with mass excesses of $-30.510(890)$ MeV, $-35.280(650)$ MeV, $-36.900(790)$ MeV, and $-49.210(990)$ MeV, respectively. With the measurement of the $^{66}$Mn mass, the locations of the two dominant electron capture heat sources in the outer crust of accreting neutron stars that exhibit superbursts are now experimentally constrained. We find that the location of the $^{66}$Fe$\rightarrow^{66}$Mn electron capture transition occurs significantly closer to the surface than previously assumed because our new experimental Q-value is 2.1 MeV (2.6$\sigma$) smaller than predicted by the FRDM mass model., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The isomeric and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays of the $N=Z+2$ nucleus ${}^{96}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$Ag were investigated at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. A cascade of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions originating from the deexcitation of a microsecond isomer was observed for the first time and was found in coincidence with two previously known transitions with energies of 470 and 667 keV. The isomeric half-life was determined as 1.45(7) $\ensuremath{\mu}$s, more precise than previously reported. The existence of a second, longer-lived microsecond isomer, associated with a 743-keV $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transition, is also proposed here. Shell model results within the $({p}_{3/2}{p}_{1/2}{f}_{5/2}{g}_{9/2})$ model space, using the jj44b interaction, reproduced level energies and isomeric decay half-lives reasonably well.

Production cross sections with beryllium and tungsten targets were determined for a large number of nuclei, including 15 isotopes first observed in this work. These are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements $17\ensuremath{\leqslant}Z\ensuremath{\leqslant}25$ ($^{50}\mathrm{Cl}$, $^{53}\mathrm{Ar}$, $^{55,56}\mathrm{K}$, $^{57,58}\mathrm{Ca}$, $^{59,60,61}\mathrm{Sc}$, $^{62,63}\mathrm{Ti}$, $^{65,66}\mathrm{V}$, $^{68}\mathrm{Cr}$, and $^{70}\mathrm{Mn}$). A one-body ${Q}_{g}$ systematics is used to describe the production cross sections based on thermal evaporation from excited prefragments. Some of the fragments near $^{58}\mathrm{Ca}$ show anomalously large production cross sections.

Abstract

Eight new isomeric states in neutron-rich nuclides have been discovered in fission fragments produced by the reaction of an 80 MeV/nucleon {sup 238}U beam with a {sup 9}Be target and separated in-flight using the A1900 fragment separator. The experiment was conducted at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University. Gamma rays were detected in a high-purity germanium detector located at the focal plane within a time window of 20 {mu}s following ion implantation. In some cases the isomers were observed to decay into previously reported states, allowing us to assign the initial decay from the isomeric state. Among the outcomes, the results suggest that many studies on the nuclear structure of medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei are feasible at projectile fragmentation facilities using induced fission.

Abstract

The results of measurements of the production of neutron-rich nuclei by the fragmentation of a {sup 76}Ge beam are presented. The cross sections were measured for a large range of nuclei including 15 new isotopes that are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements chlorine to manganese ({sup 50}Cl, {sup 53}Ar, {sup 55,56}K, {sup 57,58}Ca, {sup 59,60,61}Sc, {sup 62,63}Ti, {sup 65,66}V, {sup 68}Cr, {sup 70}Mn). The enhanced cross sections of several new nuclei relative to a simple thermal evaporation framework, previously shown to describe similar production cross sections, indicates that nuclei in the region around {sup 62}Ti might be more stable than predicted by current mass models and could be an indication of a new island of inversion similar to that centered on {sup 31}Na.

Abstract

The {beta}-decay properties of the N=Z nuclei {sup 96}Cd, {sup 98}In, and {sup 100}Sn have been studied. These nuclei were produced at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory by fragmenting a 120 MeV/nucleon {sup 112}Sn primary beam on a Be target. The resulting radioactive beam was filtered in the A1900 and the newly commissioned Radio Frequency Fragment Separator to achieve a purity level suitable for decay studies. The observed production cross sections of these nuclei are lower than predicted by factors of 10-30. The half-life of {sup 96}Cd, which was the last experimentally unknown waiting point half-life of the astrophysical rp process, is 1.03{sub -0.21}{sup +0.24} s. The implications of the experimental T{sub 1/2} value of {sup 96}Cd on the abundances predicted by rp process calculations and the origin of A=96 isobars such as {sup 96}Ru are explored.

Abstract

Absolute transition probabilities for the first 2{sup +} states in {sup 110,114}Pd were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift technique following projectile Coulomb excitation at intermediate beam energy. This technique was applied for the first time to projectiles produced in a primary fragmentation reaction, which get Coulomb excited in a secondary reaction. The {sup 110}Pd data was used to check the novel experimental technique as well as the data analysis procedure, which is based on the examination of {gamma}-ray line shapes. Whereas the measured B(E2) value for {sup 110}Pd agrees very well with the literature, the value obtained for {sup 114}Pd differs considerably. The new experimental data are compared to calculations in the framework of the Interacting Boson Model. The data are also used to test the novel concept of valence proton symmetry, which allows for extrapolation of nuclear properties to very neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of Fe-66,Fe-68 following intermediate-energy one- and two-proton knockout from cobalt and nickel secondary beams has been performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. New transitions have been observed in Fe-66 and Fe-68. This is the first observation of gamma-ray transitions in Fe-68. In addition, Cr-64 was produced using the Be-9(Fe-66,Cr-64)X two-proton knockout reaction. An unexpectedly low inclusive cross section is observed for this reaction, an order of magnitude smaller than for the Be-9(Ni-68,Fe-66)X reaction. This observation is discussed in terms of a significant structural difference between Fe-66 and Cr-64 and considerable admixtures of nu(pf)(n-2) (g(9/2))(+2) configurations in the ground and excited states of Cr-64 at N = 40.

Abstract

Transition rate measurements are reported for the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ and ${2}_{2}^{+}$ states in $N=Z$ $^{64}\mathrm{Ge}$. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with large-scale shell-model calculations applying the recently developed GXPF1A interactions. The measurement was done using the recoil distance method (RDM) and a unique combination of state-of-the-art instruments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). States of interest were populated via an intermediate-energy single-neutron knockout reaction. RDM studies of knockout and fragmentation reaction products hold the promise of reaching far from stability and providing lifetime information for excited states in a wide range of nuclei.

Abstract

The results of measurements of the production of neutron-rich nuclei by the fragmentation of a {sup 48}Ca beam at 142 MeV/nucleon are presented. Evidence was found for the production of a new isotope that is the most neutron-rich silicon nuclide, {sup 44}Si, in a net neutron pickup process. A simple systematic framework was found to describe the production cross sections based on thermal evaporation from excited prefragments that allows extrapolation to other weak reaction products.

Abstract

Polarized proton beams with energies from 80 to $130\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{keV}$ have been used to determine the slope of the astrophysical $S$ factor for the $^{6}\mathrm{Li}(p,{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0})^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{6}\mathrm{Li}(p,{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{1})^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ reactions. The slope was determined from the relative yields at five incident proton energies. The slope of the $S$ factor was found to be negative. The analyzing power measurements indicate that the reaction proceeds predominately by $s$-wave capture. The negative slope does not appear to be due to low-binding-energy effects, the effects of nearby resonances, or electron screening of the nuclei. A resonating group model calculation demonstrates a new mechanism for producing a negative slope at astrophysically relevant energies in radiative capture reactions.
