Search

A paradigm shift in quantum thermometry is proposed. To date, thermometry has relied on local estimation, which is useful to reduce statistical fluctuations once the temperature is very well known. In order to estimate temperatures in cases where few measurement data or no substantial prior knowledge are available, we build instead a theory of global quantum thermometry. Based on scaling arguments, a mean logarithmic error is shown here to be the correct figure of merit for thermometry. Its full minimisation provides an operational and optimal rule to post-process measurements into a temperature reading, and it establishes a global precision limit. We apply these results to the simulated outcomes of measurements on a spin gas, finding that the local approach can lead to biased temperature estimates in cases where the global estimator converges to the true temperature. Living systems operate far from thermal equilibrium by converting the chemical potential of ATP into mechanical work to achieve growth, replication or locomotion. Given time series observations of intra-, inter- or multicellular processes, a key challenge is to detect non-equilibrium behavior and quantify the rate of free energy consumption. Obtaining reliable bounds on energy consumption and entropy production directly from experimental data remains difficult in practice as many degrees of freedom typically are hidden to the observer, so that the accessible coarse-grained dynamics may not obviously violate detailed balance. Here, we introduce a novel method for bounding the entropy production of physical and living systems which uses only the waiting time statistics of hidden Markov processes and hence can be directly applied to experimental data. By determining a universal limiting curve, we infer entropy production bounds from experimental data for gene regulatory networks, mammalian behavioral dynamics and numerous other biological processes. Quantum target detection is an emerging application that utilizes entanglement to enhance the sensing of the presence of an object. Although several experimental demonstrations for certain situations have been reported recently, the single-shot detection limit imposed by the Helstrom limit has not been reached because of the unknown optimum measurements. Here we report an experimental demonstration of quantum target detection, also known as quantum illumination, in the single-photon limit. In our experiment, one photon of the maximally entangled photon pair is employed as the probe signal and the corresponding optimum measurement is implemented at the receiver. We explore the detection problem in different regions of the parameter space and verify that the quantum advantage exists even in a forbidden region of the conventional illumination, where all classical schemes become useless. Our results indicate that quantum illumination breaks the classical limit for up to 40%, while approaching the quantum limit imposed by the Helstrom limit. These results not only demonstrate the advantage of quantum illumination, but also manifest its valuable potential of target detection.

Distributed quantum sensing can provide quantum-enhanced sensitivity beyond the shot-noise limit (SNL) for sensing spatially distributed parameters. To date, distributed quantum sensing experiments have been mostly accomplished in laboratory environments without a real space separation for the sensors. In addition, the post-selection is normally assumed to demonstrate the sensitivity advantage over the SNL. Here, we demonstrate distributed quantum sensing in field and show the unconditional violation (without post-selection) of SNL up to 0.916 dB for the field distance of 240 m. The achievement is based on a loophole free Bell test setup with entangled photon pairs at the averaged heralding efficiency of 73.88%. Moreover, to test quantum sensing in real life, we demonstrate the experiment for long distances (with 10-km fiber) together with the sensing of a completely random and unknown parameter. The CUPID-Mo experiment at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) is a demonstrator for CUPID, the next-generation ton-scale bolometric 0νββ experiment. It consists of a 4.2 kg array of 20 enriched Li_{2}^{100}MoO_{4} scintillating bolometers to search for the lepton-number-violating process of 0νββ decay in ^{100}Mo. With more than one year of operation (^{100}Mo exposure of 1.17 kg×yr for physics data), no event in the region of interest and, hence, no evidence for 0νββ is observed. We report a new limit on the half-life of 0νββ decay in ^{100}Mo of T_{1/2}>1.5×10^{24} yr at 90% C.I. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass ⟨m_{ββ}⟩

We analyze the ultimate quantum limit of resolving two identical sources in a noisy environment. We prove that in the presence of noise causing false excitation, such as thermal noise, the quantum Fisher information of arbitrary quantum states for the separation of the objects, which quantifies the resolution, always converges to zero as the separation goes to zero. Noisy cases contrast with a noiseless case where it has been shown to be nonzero for a small distance in various circumstances, revealing the superresolution. In addition, we show that false excitation on an arbitrary measurement, such as dark counts, also makes the classical Fisher information of the measurement approach to zero as the separation goes to zero. Finally, a practically relevant situation resolving two identical thermal sources, is quantitatively investigated by using the quantum and classical Fisher information of finite spatial mode multiplexing, showing that the amount of noise poses a limit on the resolution in a noisy system., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

A wide variety of imaging systems have been designed to measure phase variations, with applications from physics to biology and medicine. In this work, we theoretically compare the precision of phase estimations achievable with classical phase microscopy techniques, operated at the shot-noise limit. We show how the Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound is calculated for any linear optical system, including phase-contrast microscopy, phase-shifting holography, spatial light interference microscopy, and local optimization of wavefronts for phase imaging. Through these examples, we demonstrate how this general framework can be applied for the design and optimization of classical phase microscopes. Our results show that wavefront shaping is required to design phase microscopes with optimal phase precision.

The Heisenberg scaling, which scales as N^{-1} in terms of the number of particles or T^{-1} in terms of the evolution time, serves as a fundamental limit in quantum metrology. Better scalings, dubbed as "super-Heisenberg scaling," however, can also arise when the generator of the parameter involves many-body interactions or when it is time dependent. All these different scalings can actually be seen as manifestations of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations. While there is only one best scaling in the single-parameter quantum metrology, different scalings can coexist for the estimation of multiple parameters, which can be characterized by multiple Heisenberg uncertainty relations. We demonstrate the coexistence of two different scalings via the simultaneous estimation of the magnitude and frequency of a field where the best precisions, characterized by two Heisenberg uncertainty relations, scale as T^{-1} and T^{-2}, respectively (in terms of the standard deviation). We show that the simultaneous saturation of two Heisenberg uncertainty relations can be achieved by the optimal protocol, which prepares the optimal probe state, implements the optimal control, and performs the optimal measurement. The optimal protocol is experimentally implemented on an optical platform that demonstrates the saturation of the two Heisenberg uncertainty relations simultaneously, with up to five controls. As the first demonstration of simultaneously achieving two different Heisenberg scalings, our study deepens the understanding on the connection between the precision limit and the uncertainty relations, which has wide implications in practical applications of multiparameter quantum estimation.

Driven quantum systems may realize novel phenomena absent in static systems, but driving-induced heating can limit the time-scale on which these persist. We study heating in interacting quantum many-body systems driven by random sequences with $n-$multipolar correlations, corresponding to a polynomially suppressed low frequency spectrum. For $n\geq1$, we find a prethermal regime, the lifetime of which grows algebraically with the driving rate, with exponent ${2n+1}$. A simple theory based on Fermi's golden rule accounts for this behaviour. The quasiperiodic Thue-Morse sequence corresponds to the $n\to \infty$ limit, and accordingly exhibits an exponentially long-lived prethermal regime. Despite the absence of periodicity in the drive, and in spite of its eventual heat death, the prethermal regime can host versatile non-equilibrium phases, which we illustrate with a random multipolar discrete time crystal., Comment: 5+5 pages, 4+7 figures, accepted in P.R.L

It is widely accepted that inverse square Levy walks are optimal search strategies because they maximize the encounter rate with sparse, randomly distributed, replenishable targets when the search restarts in the vicinity of the previously visited target, which becomes revisitable again with high probability, i.e., non-destructive foraging [Nature 401, 911 (1999)]. The precise conditions for the validity of this Levy flight foraging hypothesis (LFH) have been widely described in the literature [Phys. Life Rev. 14, 94 (2015)]. Nevertheless, three objecting claims to the LFH have been raised recently for $d \geq 2$: (i) the capture rate $\eta$ has linear dependence on the target density $\rho$ for all values of the Levy index $\alpha$; (ii) "the gain $\eta_{max}/\eta$ achieved by varying $\alpha $ is bounded even in the limit $\rho \to 0 $" so that "tuning $\alpha$ can only yield a marginal gain"; (iii) depending on the values of the radius of detection $a$, the restarting distance $l_c$ and the scale parameter $s$, the optimum is realized for a range of $\alpha$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 080601 (2020)]. Here we answer each of these three criticisms in detail and show that claims (i)-(iii) do not actually invalidate the LFH. Our results and analyses restore the original result of the LFH for non-destructive foraging.

We discuss vortex solutions of the Abelian Higgs model in the limit of large winding number n. We suggest a framework where a topological quantum number n is associated with a ratio of dynamical scales and a systematic expansion in inverse powers of n is then derived in the spirit of effective field theory. The general asymptotic form of giant vortices is obtained. For critical coupling the axially symmetric vortices become integrable in the large-n limit and we present the corresponding analytic solution. The method provides simple asymptotic formulas for the vortex shape and parameters with accuracy that can be systematically improved, and can be applied to topological solitons of other models. After including the next-to-leading terms the approximation works remarkably well down to n=1.

We investigate the role of the effective range on the bulk viscosity of $s$- and $p$-wave Fermi gases. At resonance, the presence of the effective range breaks the scale invariance of the system, and hence results in a non-zero bulk viscosity. However, we show that the effective range plays a very different role in the two cases. In the $s$-wave case, the role of the effective range is perturbative, and its contribution to the bulk viscosity vanishes in the limit of zero effective range. On the other hand, the effective range in $p$-wave Fermi gases leads to a non-zero bulk viscosity, even in the zero-range limit. We setup the general diagrammatic approach to compute the bulk viscosity spectral function that includes the effects of the effective range. We then compute the analytic expressions for the spectral function in the high temperature limit, at low- and high-frequencies. We also derive the sum rules for the bulk viscosity spectral function for both $s$- and $p$-wave gases.

How does a cell locate the source of molecular guidance cues from within a concentration gradient? We present a computational approach to recover the source from the absorbed fluxes at narrow receptor windows located on the surface of the cell. In the limit of fast binding, we solve the steady-state diffusion equation using an asymptotic approach and hybrid stochastic-analytical simulations. We show that the sensitivity to the gradient direction decays too rapidly to enable long-distance sensing. We illustrate how this constraint can be alleviated when triangulating the source with an increasing number of receptor windows and quantify the susceptibility of this process to flux perturbations.

We present a constructive derivation of all four-point tree-level holographic correlators for eleven dimensional supergravity on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{7}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{4}$. These correlators correspond to four-point functions of arbitrary one-half BPS operators in the six-dimensional (2,0) theory at large central charge. The crucial observation is that the polar part of the correlators in Mellin space is fully captured by a drastically simpler maximally $R$-symmetry violating amplitude, while the contact part is fully fixed by superconformal Ward identities and the flat space limit.

We study the thermodynamic cost associated with the erasure of one bit of information over a finite amount of time. We present a general framework for minimizing the average work required when full control of a system's microstates is possible. In addition to exact numerical results, we find simple bounds proportional to the variance of the microscopic distribution associated with the state of the bit. In the short-time limit, we get a closed expression for the minimum average amount of work needed to erase a bit. The average work associated with the optimal protocol can be up to a factor of 4 smaller relative to protocols constrained to end in local equilibrium. Assessing prior experimental and numerical results based on heuristic protocols, we find that our bounds often dissipate an order of magnitude less energy. The fluctuation dissipation theorem~(FDT) is a hallmark of thermal equilibrium systems in the Gibbs state. We address the question whether the FDT is obeyed by isolated quantum systems in an energy eigenstate. In the framework of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, we derive the formal expression for two-time correlation functions in the energy eigenstates or in the diagonal ensemble. They satisfy the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition, which is the sufficient and necessary condition for the FDT, in the infinite system size limit. We also obtain the finite size correction to the FDT for finite-sized systems. With extensive numerical works for the XXZ spin chain model, we confirm our theory for the FDT and the finite size correction. This paper derives the limit of the quantum network transmission rate when some of the quantum network channels are corrupted. The authors propose a quantum code that works efficiently even in the one-shot setting when the network operations are Clifford operations.

We investigate the connection between the time evolution of averages of stochastic quantities and the Fisher information and its induced statistical length. As a consequence of the Cramér-Rao bound, we find that the rate of change of the average of any observable is bounded from above by its variance times the temporal Fisher information. As a consequence of this bound, we obtain a speed limit on the evolution of stochastic observables: Changing the average of an observable requires a minimum amount of time given by the change in the average squared, divided by the fluctuations of the observable times the thermodynamic cost of the transformation. In particular, for relaxation dynamics, which do not depend on time explicitly, we show that the Fisher information is a monotonically decreasing function of time and that the minimal required time is determined by the initial preparation of the system. The fundamental thermal limit of magnetic field sensing using the resonance-enhanced magnetoelectric (ME) effect in strain-coupled ferroic composite cantilevers is investigated theoretically with results applied to $({\mathrm{Fe}}_{90}{\mathrm{Co}}_{10}{)}_{78}{\mathrm{Si}}_{12}{\mathrm{B}}_{10}/\mathrm{Si}/\mathrm{Al}\mathrm{N}$ using experimental material parameters. An analytic theory of the ME response and noise from thermal vibrations, Johnson-Nyquist noise from dielectric losses in $\mathrm{Al}\mathrm{N}$, and amplifier electronics is given to yield the magnetic field detection limit for the first bending mode. A systematic investigation of scaling behavior of ME response, sensitivity, noise components, and detection limit with cantilever size, layer thicknesses, quality factor ${Q}_{f}$, and resonance frequency $f$ is presented emphasizing the low-frequency small-size regime essential for biomagnetic sensing applications. Thermal vibrations are found to dominate all investigated noise sources for practical composite sizes except at low quality factors. Detection limit scaling inversely with functional layer thickness, as $1{/\mathrm{size}}^{2}$ for constant $f$ and ${Q}_{f}$, and as ${Q}_{f}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}$ (constant size and $f$) is found. Achievable detection limits below $100\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{fT}/\mathrm{H}{\mathrm{z}}^{1/2}$ are predicted for $({\mathrm{Fe}}_{90}{\mathrm{Co}}_{10}{)}_{78}{\mathrm{Si}}_{12}{\mathrm{B}}_{10}/\mathrm{Si}/\mathrm{Al}\mathrm{N}$ composite cantilevers at sizes below $10\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mm}$ (and even lower without size constraint) with $f=1\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}$, ${Q}_{f}=1000$, and $({\mathrm{Fe}}_{90}{\mathrm{Co}}_{10}{)}_{78}{\mathrm{Si}}_{12}{\mathrm{B}}_{10}$ layers of $50\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. The scaling behavior implies the absence of an absolute detection limit for thick ferroic layers within the range of validity of the experimental material parameters observed at $\ensuremath{\sim}2\dots{}4\phantom{\rule{0.1em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$.

We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130} Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a fourfold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds, and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of (1.38±0.07)×10^{-2} counts/(keV kg yr)) in the 0νββ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of 1.7×10^{25} yr. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a 90% credibility interval Bayesian lower limit of 3.2×10^{25} yr on the ^{130} Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that 0νββ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used.

As a promising candidate for exhibiting quantum computational supremacy, Gaussian Boson Sampling (GBS) is designed to exploit the ease of experimental preparation of Gaussian states. However, sufficiently large and inevitable experimental noise might render GBS classically simulable. In this work, we formalize this intuition by establishing a sufficient condition for approximate polynomial-time classical simulation of noisy GBS --- in the form of an inequality between the input squeezing parameter, the overall transmission rate and the quality of photon detectors. Our result serves as a non-classicality test that must be passed by any quantum computationalsupremacy demonstration based on GBS. We show that, for most linear-optical architectures, where photon loss increases exponentially with the circuit depth, noisy GBS loses its quantum advantage in the asymptotic limit. Our results thus delineate intermediate-sized regimes where GBS devices might considerably outperform classical computers for modest noise levels. Finally, we find that increasing the amount of input squeezing is helpful to evade our classical simulation algorithm, which suggests a potential route to mitigate photon loss., 13 pages, 4 figures, final version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We analyze a new model for growing networks, the constrained Leath invasion percolation model. Cluster dynamics are characterized by bursts in space and time. The model quantitatively reproduces the observed frequency-magnitude scaling of earthquakes in the limit that the occupation probability approaches the critical bond percolation probability in d=2. The model may have application to other systems characterized by burst dynamics.

This letter exposes a tight connection between the thermodynamic efficiency of information processing and predictive inference. A generalized lower bound on dissipation is derived for partially observable information engines which are allowed to use temperature differences. It is shown that the retention of irrelevant information limits efficiency. A data representation strategy is derived from optimizing a fundamental physical limit to information processing: minimizing the lower bound on dissipation leads to a data compression method that maximally retains relevant, predictive, information. A famous example of gauge/gravity duality is the result that the entropy density of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ SYM in four dimensions for large N is exactly 3/4 of the Stefan-Boltzmann limit. In this work, I revisit the massless O(N) model in 2+1 dimensions, which is analytically solvable at finite temperature $T$ for all couplings $\lambda$ in the large N limit. I find that the entropy density monotonically decreases from the Stefan-Boltzmann limit at $\lambda=0$ to exactly 4/5 of the Stefan-Boltzmann limit at $\lambda=\infty$. Calculating the retarded energy-momentum tensor correlator in the scalar channel at $\lambda=\infty$, I find that it has two logarithmic branch cuts originating at $\omega=\pm 4 T \ln \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, but no singularities in the whole complex frequency plane. I show that the ratio 4/5 and the location of the branch points both are universal within a large class of bosonic CFTs in 2+1 dimensions.

Driven periodic elastic systems such as charge-density waves (CDWs) pinned by impurities show a nontrivial, glassy dynamical critical behavior. Their proper theoretical description requires the functional renormalization group. We show that their critical behavior close to the depinning transition is related to a much simpler model, $O(n)$ symmetric ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{4}$ theory in the unusual limit of $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{-}2$. We demonstrate that both theories yield identical results to four-loop order and give both a perturbative and a nonperturbative proof of their equivalence. As we show, both theories can be used to describe loop-erased random walks (LERWs), the trace of a random walk where loops are erased as soon as they are formed. Remarkably, two famous models of non-self-intersecting random walks, self-avoiding walks and LERWs, can both be mapped onto ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{4}$ theory, taken with formally $n=0$ and $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{-}2$ components. This mapping allows us to compute the dynamic critical exponent of CDWs at the depinning transition and the fractal dimension of LERWs in $d=3$ with unprecedented accuracy, $z(d=3)=1.6243\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001$, in excellent agreement with the estimate $z=1.62400\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00005$ of numerical simulations.

We show that a class of random all-to-all spin models, realizable in systems of atoms coupled to an optical cavity, gives rise to a rich dynamical phase diagram due to the pairwise separable nature of the couplings. By controlling the experimental parameters, one can tune between integrable and chaotic dynamics on the one hand, and between classical and quantum regimes on the other hand. For two special values of a spin-anisotropy parameter, the model exhibits rational-Gaudin type integrability and it is characterized by an extensive set of spin-bilinear integrals of motion, independent of the spin size. More generically, we find a novel integrable structure with conserved charges that are not purely bilinear. Instead, they develop `dressing tails' of higher-body terms, reminiscent of the dressed local integrals of motion found in Many-Body Localized phases. Surprisingly, this new type of integrable dynamics found in finite-size spin-1/2 systems disappears in the large-$S$ limit, giving way to classical chaos. We identify parameter regimes for characterizing these different dynamical behaviors in realistic experiments, in light of the limitations set by cavity dissipation., v3: Published version. Backaction-evading measurements of mechanical motion can achieve precision below the zero-point uncertainty and quantum squeezing, which makes them a resource for quantum metrology and quantum information processing. We provide an exact expression for the conditional state of an optomechanical system in a two-tone backaction-evading measurement beyond the standard adiabatic approximation and perform extensive numerical simulations to go beyond the usual rotating-wave approximation. We predict the simultaneous presence of conditional mechanical squeezing, intra-cavity squeezing, and optomechanical entanglement. We further apply an analogous analysis to the multimode optomechanical system of two mechanical and one cavity mode and find conditional mechanical Einstein-Podolski-Rosen entanglement and genuinely tripartite optomechanical entanglement. Our analysis is of direct relevance for state-of-the-art optomechanical experiments that have entered the backaction-dominated regime., 4 pages + appendix. 4 figures

We formally extend the notion of Markov order to open quantum processes by accounting for the instruments used to probe the system of interest at different times. Our description recovers the classical Markov order property in the appropriate limit: when the stochastic process is classical and the instruments are non-invasive, \emph{i.e.}, restricted to orthogonal, projective measurements. We then prove that there do not exist non-Markovian quantum processes that have finite Markov order with respect to all possible instruments; the same process exhibits distinct memory effects with respect to different probing instruments. This naturally leads to a relaxed definition of quantum Markov order with respect to specified sequences of instruments. The memory effects captured by different choices of instruments vary dramatically, providing a rich landscape for future exploration., Comment: 4.5+2 pages, 3 figures

With recent advances in dynamic scanning probe microscopy techniques, it is now a routine to image the sub-molecular structure of molecules with atomically-engineered tips which are prepared via controlled modification of the tip termination and are chemically well-defined. The enhanced spatial resolution is possible as atomically-engineered tips can preserve their integrity in the repulsive interaction regime. Although the mechanism of improved spatial resolution has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically, the ultimate temporal resolution while preserving picometer scale spatial resolution still remains an open question. Here, we computationally analyze the temporal resolution of atomic force microscopy imaging with atomically-engineered tips. Our computational results reveal that non-metal terminated tips, e.g. oxygen-terminated copper, are well-suited for enhanced temporal resolution up to video rate imaging velocities while preserving picometer range spatial resolution. Contrarily, the highest-attainable spatial resolution of atomically-engineered tips with low-stiffness, e.g. CO-terminated, deteriorate with increasing imaging velocity. Our results reveal that when atomically-engineered tips terminated with molecules are in use, imaging velocities in the order of nanometers per second at most are inevitable even for atomically flat surfaces to retain atomic resolution and avoid slip-stick motion. In addition to shedding light on the temporal resolution of atomic force microscopy imaging with atomically-engineered tips, our numerical results provide an outlook to the scalability of atom-by-atom fabrication using scanning probe microscopy techniques., 11 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a simple, exactly solvable strong-randomness renormalization group (RG) model for the many-body localization (MBL) transition in one dimension. Our approach relies on a family of RG flows parametrized by the asymmetry between thermal and localized phases. We identify the physical MBL transition in the limit of maximal asymmetry, reflecting the instability of MBL against rare thermal inclusions. We find a critical point that is localized with power-law distributed thermal inclusions. The typical size of critical inclusions remains finite at the transition, while the average size is logarithmically diverging. We propose a two-parameter scaling theory for the many-body localization transition that falls into the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, with the MBL phase corresponding to a stable line of fixed points with multifractal behavior., Comment: Published version

The famous vanishing of the density of states (DOS) in a band gap, be it photonic or electronic, pertains to the infinite-crystal limit. In contrast, all experiments and device applications refer to finite crystals, which raises the question: Upon increasing the linear size $L$ of a crystal, how fast does the DOS approach the infinite-crystal limit? We present a theory for finite crystals that includes Bloch-mode broadening due to the presence of crystal boundaries. Our results demonstrate that the DOS for frequencies inside a band gap has a $1/L$ scale dependence for crystals in one, two and three dimensions.

We present the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with one jet at the LHC including the full top-quark mass dependence. The mass of the bottom quark is neglected. The two-loop integrals appearing in the virtual contribution are calculated numerically using the method of sector decomposition. We study the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution, focusing on the high pt,H region, where the top-quark loop is resolved. We find that the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are large but that the ratio of the next-to-leading-order to leading-order result is similar to that obtained by computing in the limit of large top-quark mass.

Quantum systems strongly coupled to many-body systems equilibrate to the reduced state of a global thermal state, deviating from the local thermal state of the system as it occurs in the weak-coupling limit. Taking this insight as a starting point, we study the thermodynamics of systems strongly coupled to thermal baths. First, we provide strong-coupling corrections to the second law applicable to general systems in three of its different readings: As a statement of maximal extractable work, on heat dissipation, and bound to the Carnot efficiency. These corrections become relevant for small quantum systems and always vanish in first order in the interaction strength. We then move to the question of power of heat engines, obtaining a bound on the power enhancement due to strong coupling. The drag of turbulent flows can be drastically decreased by addition of small amounts of high molecular weight polymers. While drag reduction initially increases with polymer concentration, it eventually saturates to what is known as the maximum drag reduction (MDR) asymptote; this asymptote is generally attributed to the dynamics being reduced to a marginal yet persistent state of subdued turbulent motion. Contrary to this accepted view we will show in the following that for an appropriate choice of parameters polymers can reduce the drag beyond the suggested asymptotic limit, eliminating turbulence and giving way to laminar flow. However at higher polymer concentrations the laminar state becomes unstable, resulting in a fluctuating flow with the characteristic drag of the MDR asymptote. We take the first step in extending the integrability approach to one-point functions in AdS/dCFT to higher loop orders. More precisely, we argue that the formula encoding all tree-level one-point functions of SU(2) operators in the defect version of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, has a natural asymptotic generalization to higher loop orders. The asymptotic formula correctly encodes the information about the one-loop correction to the one-point functions of nonprotected operators once dressed by a simple flux-dependent factor, as we demonstrate by an explicit computation involving a novel object denoted as an amputated matrix product state. Furthermore, when applied to the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase vacuum state, the asymptotic formula gives a result for the one-point function which in a certain double-scaling limit agrees with that obtained in the dual string theory up to wrapping order.

The first observation of the decay of a B0 meson to a purely baryonic final state, B0→pp, is reported. The proton-proton collision data sample used was collected with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1. The branching fraction is determined to be B(B0→pp)=(1.25±0.27±0.18)×10-8, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The decay mode B0→pp is the rarest decay of the B0 meson observed to date. The decay Bs0→pp is also investigated. No signal is seen and the upper limit B(Bs0→pp)

We experimentally determined various thermodynamic quantities of interacting two-component fermions at the zero-temperature limit from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) region to the unitarity limit. The obtained results are very accurate in the sense that the systematic error is within 4% around the unitarity limit. Using this advantage, we can compare our data with various many-body theories. We found that an extended ${\it T}$-matrix approximation, which is a strong-coupling theory involving fluctuations in the Cooper channel, well reproduces our experimental results. We also found that the superfluid order parameter ${\it \Delta}$ calculated by solving the ordinary BCS gap equation with the chemical potential of interacting fermions is close to the binding energy of the paired fermions directly observed in a spectroscopic experiment and that obtained using a quantum Monte Carlo method. Since understanding the strong-coupling properties of a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover region is a crucial issue in condensed matter physics and nuclear physics, the results of the present study are expected to be useful in the further development of these fields.

Randomized benchmarking (RB) is widely used to measure an error rate of a set of quantum gates, by performing random circuits that would do nothing if the gates were perfect. In the limit of no finite-sampling error, the exponential decay rate of the observable survival probabilities, versus circuit length, yields a single error metric $r$. For Clifford gates with arbitrary small errors described by process matrices, $r$ was believed to reliably correspond to the mean, over all Cliffords, of the average gate infidelity (AGI) between the imperfect gates and their ideal counterparts. We show that this quantity is not a well-defined property of a physical gateset. It depends on the representations used for the imperfect and ideal gates, and the variant typically computed in the literature can differ from $r$ by orders of magnitude. We present new theories of the RB decay that are accurate for all small errors describable by process matrices, and show that the RB decay curve is a simple exponential for all such errors. These theories allow explicit computation of the error rate that RB measures ($r$), but as far as we can tell it does not correspond to the infidelity of a physically allowed (completely positive) representation of the imperfect gates., Comment: v4: Minor updates; close to published version. v3: Major improvements in presentation and emphasis, including additional plots in Fig. 1. The theory of Gaussian quantum fluctuations around classical steady states in nonlinear quantum-optical systems (also known as standard linearization) is a cornerstone for the analysis of such systems. Its simplicity, together with its accuracy far from critical points or situations where the nonlinearity reaches the strong coupling regime, has turned it into a widespread technique, which is the first method of choice in most works on the subject. However, such a technique finds strong practical and conceptual complications when one tries to apply it to situations in which the classical long-time solution is time dependent, a most prominent example being spontaneous limit-cycle formation. Here we introduce a linearization scheme adapted to such situations, using the driven Van der Pol oscillator as a testbed for the method, which allows us to compare it with full numerical simulations. On a conceptual level, the scheme relies on the connection between the emergence of limit cycles and the spontaneous breaking of the symmetry under temporal translations. On the practical side, the method keeps the simplicity and linear scaling with the size of the problem (number of modes) characteristic of standard linearization, making it applicable to large (many-body) systems., Comment: Constructive suggestions and criticism are welcome

The decay path of the Hoyle state in ^{12}C (E_{x}=7.654 MeV) has been studied with the ^{14}N(d,α_{2})^{12}C(7.654) reaction induced at 10.5 MeV. High resolution invariant mass spectroscopy techniques have allowed us to unambiguously disentangle direct and sequential decays of the state passing through the ground state of ^{8}Be. Thanks to the almost total absence of background and the attained resolution, a fully sequential decay contribution to the width of the state has been observed. The direct decay width is negligible, with an upper limit of 0.043% (95% C.L.). The precision of this result is about a factor 5 higher than previous studies. This has significant implications on nuclear structure, as it provides constraints to 3α cluster model calculations, where higher precision limits are needed.

A search for the rare decays B0s→τ+τ− and B0→τ+τ− is performed using proton--proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−1 collected in 2011 and 2012. The τ leptons are reconstructed through the decay τ−→π−π+π−ντ. Assuming no contribution from B0→τ+τ− decays, an upper limit is set on the branching fraction B(B0s→τ+τ−)

We consider isolated many-body quantum systems which do not thermalize, i.e., expectation values approach an (approximately) steady longtime limit which disagrees with the microcanonical prediction of equilibrium statistical mechanics. A general analytical theory is worked out for the typical temporal relaxation behavior in such cases. The main prerequisites are initial conditions which appreciably populate many energy levels and do not give rise to significant spatial inhomogeneities on macroscopic scales. The theory explains very well the experimental and numerical findings in a trapped-ion quantum simulator exhibiting many-body localization, in ultracold atomic gases, and in integrable hard-core boson and XXZ models.

When does a diffusing particle reach its target for the first time? This first-passage time (FPT) problem is central to the kinetics of molecular reactions in chemistry and molecular biology. Here we explain the behavior of smooth FPT densities, for which all moments are finite, and demonstrate universal yet generally non-Poissonian long-time asymptotics for a broad variety of transport processes. While Poisson-like asymptotics arise generically in the presence of an effective repulsion in the immediate vicinity of the target, a time-scale separation between direct and reflected indirect trajectories gives rise to a universal proximity effect: Direct paths, heading more or less straight from the point of release to the target, become typical and focused, with a narrow spread of the corresponding first passage times. Conversely, statistically dominant indirect paths exploring the system size tend to be massively dissimilar. The initial distance to the target particularly impacts gene regulatory or competitive stochastic processes, for which often few binding events determine the regulatory outcome. We use a reservoir engineering technique based on two-tone driving to generate and stabilize a quantum squeezed state of a micron-scale mechanical oscillator in a microwave optomechanical system. Using an independent backaction evading measurement to directly quantify the squeezing, we observe $4.7\pm0.9$ dB of squeezing below the zero-point level, surpassing the 3 dB limit of standard parametric squeezing techniques. Our measurements also reveal evidence for an additional mechanical parametric effect. The interplay between this effect and the optomechanical interaction enhances the amount of squeezing obtained in the experiment.

Recent advances in micro- and nanotechnology have enabled the development of ultrasensitive sensors capable of detecting small numbers of species. In general, however, the response induced by the random adsorption of a small number of objects onto the surface of such sensors results in significant fluctuations due to the heterogeneous sensitivity inherent to many such sensors coupled to statistical fluctuations in the particle number. At present, this issue is addressed by considering either the limit of very large numbers of analytes, where fluctuations vanish, or the converse limit, where the sensor response is governed by individual analytes. Many cases of practical interest, however, fall between these two limits and remain challenging to analyze. Here, we address this limitation by deriving a general theoretical framework for quantifying measurement variations on mechanical resonators resulting from statistical-number fluctuations of analyte species. Our results provide insights into the stochastic processes in the sensing environment and offer opportunities to improve the performance of mechanical-resonator-based sensors. This metric can be used, among others, to aid in the design of robust sensor platforms to reach ultrahigh-resolution measurements using an array of sensors. These concepts, illustrated here in the context of biosensing, are general and can therefore be adapted and extended to other sensors with heterogeneous sensitivity.

We show that there exists an infinite tower of fermionic symmetries in pure $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity on an asymptotically flat background. The Ward identities associated with these symmetries are equivalent to the soft limit of the gravitino and to the statement of supersymmetry at every angle. Additionally, we show that these charges commute into charges associated with the (unextended) BMS group, providing a supersymmetrization of the BMS translations., Comment: 8 pages

The radiation pressure of light can act to damp and cool the vibrational motion of a mechanical resonator. In understanding the quantum limits of this cooling, one must consider the effect of shot noise fluctuations on the final thermal occupation. In optomechanical sideband cooling in a cavity, the finite Stokes Raman scattering defined by the cavity linewidth combined with shot noise fluctuations dictates a quantum backaction limit, analogous to the Doppler limit of atomic laser cooling. In our work we sideband cool to the quantum backaction limit by using a micromechanical membrane precooled in a dilution refrigerator. We obtain analytic expressions for the time correlation functions of a liquid of spherical particles, exact in the limit of high dimensions $d$. The derivation is long but straightforward: a dynamic virial expansion for which only the first two terms survive, followed by a change to generalized spherical coordinates in the dynamic variables leading to saddle-point evaluation of integrals for large $d$. The problem is thus mapped onto a one-dimensional diffusion in a perturbed harmonic potential with colored noise. At high density, an ergodicity-breaking glass transition is found. In this regime, our results agree with thermodynamics, consistently with the general Random First Order Transition scenario. The glass transition density is higher than the best known lower bound for hard sphere packings in large $d$. We find new sum rules between direct CP asymmetries in D meson decays with coefficients that can be determined from a global fit to branching ratio data. Our sum rules eliminate the penguin topologies P and PA, which cannot be determined from branching ratios. In this way, we can make predictions about direct CP asymmetries in the standard model without ad hoc assumptions on the sizes of penguin diagrams. We consistently include first-order SU(3)_{F} breaking in the topological amplitudes extracted from the branching ratios. By confronting our sum rules with future precise data from LHCb and Belle II, one will identify or constrain new-physics contributions to P or PA. The first sum rule correlates the CP asymmetries a_{CP}^{dir} in D^{0}→K^{+}K^{-}, D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}, and D^{0}→π^{0}π^{0}. We study the region of the a_{CP}^{dir}(D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-})-a_{CP}^{dir}(D^{0}→π^{0}π^{0}) plane allowed by current data and find that our sum rule excludes more than half of the allowed region at 95% C.L. Our second sum rule correlates the direct CP asymmetries in D^{+}→K[over ¯]^{0}K^{+}, D_{s}^{+}→K^{0}π^{+}, and D_{s}^{+}→K^{+}π^{0}.
