Search

Recent experiments searching for sub−GeV/c2 dark matter have observed event excesses close to their respective energy thresholds. Although specific to the individual technologies, the measured excess event rates have been consistently reported at or below event energies of a few-hundred eV, or with charges of a few electron-hole pairs. In the present work, we operated a 1-g silicon SuperCDMS-HVeV detector at three voltages across the crystal (0, 60 and 100 V). The 0 V data show an excess of events in the tens of eV region. Despite this event excess, we demonstrate the ability to set a competitive exclusion limit on the spin-independent dark matter–nucleon elastic scattering cross section for dark matter masses of O(100) MeV/c2, enabled by operation of the detector at 0 V potential and achievement of a very low O(10) eV threshold for nuclear recoils. Comparing the data acquired at 0, 60 and 100 V potentials across the crystal, we investigated possible sources of the unexpected events observed at low energy. The data indicate that the dominant contribution to the excess is consistent with a hypothesized luminescence from the printed circuit boards used in the detector holder.

We consider the effective field theory of gravity around black holes, and show that the coefficients of the dimension-8 operators are tightly constrained by causality considerations. Those constraints are consistent with -- but tighter than -- previously derived causality and positivity bounds and imply that the effects of one of the dimension-8 operators by itself cannot be observable while remaining consistent with causality. We then establish in which regime one can expect the generic dimension-8 and lower order operators to be potentially observable while preserving causality, providing a theoretical prior for future observations. Detection of a stochastic background of gravitational waves is likely to occur in the next few years. Beyond searches for the isotropic component of SGWBs, there have been various mapping methods proposed to target anisotropic backgrounds. Some of these methods have been applied to data taken by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories (LIGO) and Virgo. Specifically, these directional searches have focused on mapping the intensity of the signal on the sky via maximum likelihood solutions. We compare this intensity mapping approach to a previously proposed, but never employed, amplitude-phase mapping method to understand whether this latter approach may be employed in future searches. We build up our understanding of the differences between these two approaches by analysing simple toy models of time-stream data, and run mock-data mapping tests for the two methods. We find that the amplitude-phase method is only applicable to the case of a background which is phase-coherent on large scales or, at the very least, has an intrinsic coherence scale that is larger than that of the detector. Otherwise, the amplitude-phase mapping method leads to a loss of overall information, with respect to both phase and amplitude. Since we do not expect these phase-coherent properties to hold for any of the gravitational-wave background signals we hope to detect in the near future, we conclude that intensity mapping is the preferred method for such backgrounds., 15 pages, 4 figures

It was recently shown that a powerful beam of radio/microwave radiation sent out to space can produce detectable back-scattering via the stimulated decay of ambient axion dark matter. This echo is a faint and narrow signal centered at an angular frequency close to half the axion mass. In this article, we provide a detailed analytical and numerical analysis of this signal, considering the effects of the axion velocity distribution as well as the outgoing beam shape. In agreement with the original proposal, we find that the divergence of the outgoing beam does not affect the echo signal, which is only constrained by the axion velocity distribution. In this work, we consider four $f(R)$ gravity models -- the Hu-Sawicki, Starobinsky, Exponential and Tsujikawa models -- and use a range of cosmological data, together with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling techniques, to constrain the associated model parameters. Our main aim is to compare the results we get when $\Omega_{k,0}$ is treated as a free parameter with their counterparts in a spatially flat scenario. The bounds we obtain for $\Omega_{k,0}$ in the former case are compatible with a flat geometry. It appears, however, that a higher value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ allows for more curvature. Indeed, upon including in our analysis a Gaussian likelihood constructed from the local measurement of $H_0$, we find that the results favor an open universe at a little over $1\sigma$. This is perhaps not statistically significant, but it underlines the important implications of the Hubble tension for the assumptions commonly made about spatial curvature. We note that the late-time deviation of the Hubble parameter from its $\Lambda$CDM equivalent is comparable across all four models, especially in the non-flat case. When $\Omega_{k,0}=0$, the Hu-Sawicki model admits a smaller mean value for $\Omega_{\text{cdm},0}h^2$, which increases the said deviation at redshifts higher than unity. We also study the effect of a change in scale by evaluating the growth rate at two different wavenumbers $k_\dagger$. The Copernican principle (CP), i.e. the assumption that we are not privileged observers of the Universe, is a fundamental tenet of the standard cosmological model. A violation of this postulate implies the possibility that the apparent cosmic acceleration could be explained without the need of a cosmological constant, dark energy or paper we present a new test of the CP relating the distance and the expansion rate, derived via Noether's theorem, which is complementary to other tests found in the literature. We also simulate fiducial data based on upcoming stage IV galaxy surveys and use them to reconstruct the Hubble rate $H(z)$ and the angular diameter distance $d_A(z)$ in order to forecast how well our null test can constrain deviations from the cosmological constant model. We find that our new test can easily rule out several scenarios based on the Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi void model at confidence of $\gtrsim 3\sigma$ at middle to high redshifts ($z>0.5$)., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables. In our recent companion paper [arXiv:2106.00022], we pointed out a novel signature of ultralight kinetically mixed dark-photon dark matter. This signature is a quasi-monochromatic, time-oscillating terrestrial magnetic field that takes a particular pattern over the surface of the Earth. In this work, we present a search for this signal in existing, unshielded magnetometer data recorded by geographically dispersed, geomagnetic stations. The dataset comes from the SuperMAG Collaboration and consists of measurements taken with one-minute cadence since 1970, with $\mathcal{O}(500)$ stations contributing in all. We aggregate the magnetic field measurements from all stations by projecting them onto a small set of global vector spherical harmonics (VSH) that capture the expected vectorial pattern of the signal at each station. Within each dark-photon coherence time, we use a data-driven technique to estimate the broadband background noise in the data, and search for excess narrowband power in this set of VSH components; we stack the searches in distinct coherence times incoherently. Following a Bayesian analysis approach that allows us to account for the stochastic nature of the dark-photon dark-matter field, we set exclusion bounds on the kinetic mixing parameter in the dark-photon dark-matter mass range $2\times10^{-18}\,\text{eV} \lesssim m_{A'} \lesssim 7\times10^{-17}\,\text{eV}$ (corresponding to frequencies $6\times 10^{-4}\,\text{Hz}\lesssim f_{A'} \lesssim 2\times 10^{-2}\,\text{Hz}$). These limits are complementary to various existing astrophysical constraints. Although our main analysis also identifies a number of candidate signals in the SuperMAG dataset, these appear to either fail or be in tension with various additional robustness checks we apply to those candidates. The vacuum transition probabilities for anisotropic universes in the presence of a scalar field potential in the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation are studied. We follow the work by Cespedes et al [Phys. Rev. D 104, 026013 (2021)], which discuss these transitions in the isotropic context using the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, the Lorentzian Hamiltonian approach and the thin wall limit. First, we propose a general procedure to adapt their formalism to compute the decay rates for any superspace model. Then we apply it to compute the transition probabilities of an Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric with both positive and zero curvature, reproducing in this way one of the results obtained at Cespedes et al. We then proceed to apply the formalism to three anisotropic metrics, namely, Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi III and biaxial Bianchi IX to compute the rate decays for these three cases. In the process we find that this method involves some conditions which relates the effective number of independent degrees of freedom resulting on all probabilities being described with only two independent variables. Cross-correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing and galaxy clustering has been shown to greatly improve the constraints on the local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) parameter $f_{\rm NL}$ by reducing sample variance and also parameter degeneracies. To model the full use of the 3D information of galaxy clustering, we forecast $f_{\rm NL}$ measurements using the decomposition in the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis, which can be naturally cross-correlated with 2D CMB lensing in spherical harmonics. In the meantime, such a decomposition would also enable us to constrain the growth rate of structure, a probe of gravity, through the redshift-space distortion (RSD). As a comparison, we also consider the tomographic spherical harmonic (TSH) analysis of galaxy samples with different bin sizes. Assuming galaxy samples that mimic a few future surveys, we perform Fisher forecasts using linear modes for $f_{\rm NL}$ and the growth rate exponent $\gamma$, marginalized over standard $\Lambda$ cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological parameters and two nuisance parameters that account for clustering bias and magnification bias. Compared to TSH analysis using only one bin, SFB analysis could improve $\sigma(f_{\rm NL})$ by factors 3 to 12 thanks to large radial modes. With future wide-field and high-redshift photometric surveys like the LSST, the constraint $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}) < 1$ could be achieved using linear angular multipoles up to $\ell_{\rm min}\simeq 20$. Compared to using galaxy auto-power spectra only, joint analyses with CMB lensing could improve $\sigma(\gamma)$ by factors 2 to 5 by reducing degeneracies with other parameters, especially the clustering bias. We present new observational constraints on the elastic scattering of dark matter with electrons for dark matter masses between 10 keV and 1 TeV. We consider scenarios in which the momentum-transfer cross section has a power-law dependence on the relative particle velocity, with a power-law index $n \in \{-4,-2,0,2,4,6\}$. We search for evidence of dark matter scattering through its suppression of structure formation. Measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature, polarization, and lensing anisotropy from \textit{Planck} 2018 data and of the Milky Way satellite abundance measurements from the Dark Energy Survey and Pan-STARRS1 show no evidence of interactions. We use these data sets to obtain upper limits on the scattering cross section, comparing them with exclusion bounds from electronic recoil data in direct detection experiments. We extend the calculation of dark matter direct detection rates via electronic transitions in general dielectric crystal targets, combining state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations of electronic band structures and wave functions near the band gap, with semi-analytic approximations to include additional states farther away from the band gap. We show, in particular, the importance of all-electron reconstruction for recovering large momentum components of electronic wave functions, which, together with the inclusion of additional states, has a significant impact on direct detection rates, especially for heavy mediator models and at $\mathcal{O}(10\,\text{eV})$ and higher energy depositions. Applying our framework to silicon and germanium (that have been established already as sensitive dark matter detectors), we find that our extended calculations can appreciably change the detection prospects. We study the effect of a first-order phase transition in a confining $SU(N)$ dark sector with heavy dark quarks. The baryons of this sector are the dark matter candidate. During the confinement phase transition the heavy quarks are trapped inside isolated, contracting pockets of the deconfined phase, giving rise to a second stage of annihilation that dramatically suppresses the dark quark abundance. The surviving abundance is determined by the local accidental asymmetry in each pocket. The correct dark matter abundance is obtained for $\mathcal{O}(1-100)$ PeV dark quarks, above the usual unitarity bound., 5 pages, 3 figures, comments are welcomed

A problematic feature of low energy scale inflationary models, such as Starobinsky inflation, in a spatially closed universe is the occurrence of a recollapse and a big crunch singularity before inflation can even set in. In a recent work it was shown that this problem can be successfully resolved in loop quantum cosmology for a large class of initial conditions due to a non-singular cyclic evolution and a hysteresis-like phenomena. However, for certain highly unfavorable initial conditions the onset of inflation was still difficult to obtain. In this work, we explore the role of dissipative particle production, which is typical in warm inflation scenario, in the above setting. We find that entropy production sourced by such dissipative effects makes hysteresis-like phenomena stronger. As a result, the onset of inflation is quick in general including for highly unfavorable initial conditions where it fails or is significantly delayed in the absence of dissipative effects. We phenomenologically consider three warm inflation scenarios with distinct forms of dissipation coefficient, and from dynamical solutions and phase space portraits find that the phase space of favorable initial conditions turns out to be much larger than in cold inflation., 19 pages, 12 figures. We study single-field inflationary models with steep step-like features in the potential that lead to the temporary violation of the slow-roll conditions during the evolution of the inflaton. These features enhance the power spectrum of the curvature perturbations by several orders of magnitude at certain scales and also produce prominent oscillatory patterns. We study analytically and numerically the inflationary dynamics. We describe quantitatively the size of the enhancement, as well as the profile of the oscillations, which are shaped by the number and position of the features in the potential. The induced tensor power spectrum inherits the distinctive oscillatory profile of the curvature spectrum and is potentially detectable by near-future space interferometers. The enhancement of the power specrtum by step-like features, though significant, may be insufficient to trigger the production of a sizeable number of primordial black holes if radiation dominates the energy density of the early universe. However, it can result in sufficient black hole production if the universe is dominated by non-relativistic matter. For the latter scenario, we find that deviations from the standard monochromatic profile of the mass spectrum of primordial black holes are possible because of the multiple-peak structure of the curvature power spectrum., 37 pages, 14 figures. Primordial blackholes formed in the early Universe via gravitational collapse of over-dense regions may contribute a significant amount to the present dark matter relic density. Inflation provides a natural framework for the production mechanism of primordial blackholes. For example, single field inflation models with a fine-tuned scalar potential may exhibit a period of ultra-slow roll, during which the curvature perturbation may be enhanced to become seeds of the primordial blackholes formed as the corresponding scales reenter the horizon. In this work, we propose an alternative mechanism for the primordial blackhole formation. We consider a model in which a scalar field is coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term and show that primordial blackholes may be seeded when a scalar potential term and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling term are nearly balanced. Large curvature perturbation in this model not only leads to the production of primordial blackholes but it also sources gravitational waves at the second order. We revisit constraints on annihilating dark matter based on the global 21cm signature observed by EDGES. For this purpose, we used the numerical data of the latest N-body simulation performed by state-of-the-art standard in order to estimate the boost factor at high redshifts ($z$ = 10 - 100), which enhances the annihilation of dark matter in course of structure formation. By taking into account to what fraction injected energy from dark matter annihilation contributes to ionization, excitation and heating of intergalactic medium during dark ages, we estimated how large the global 21cm absorption can be. By assuming the thermal freezeout scenario, we find that $m_{\rm DM} < 15$ GeV and $m_{\rm DM} < 3$ GeV have been excluded at 95$\%$ C.L. for the annihilation modes into $b\bar{b}$ and $e^+ e^-$, respectively., 8 pages,3 figures, to appear in PRD

We compute the spectrum of tensor perturbations in warm inflation. We find that the spectrum, besides the standard component $\propto {H^2}/{M_P^2}$ associated to the amplification of the tensor vacuum fluctuations, acquires a component $\propto {\ell_{\rm mfp}\,T^5}/{M_P^4}$, where $\ell_{\rm mfp}$ and $T$ are respectively the mean free path and the temperature of the thermal degrees of freedom. The new contribution is due to the direct production of gravitational waves by the thermal bath, and can exceed the standard one in a viable region of parameter space. We develop a new phenomenological model that addresses current tensions between observations of the early and late Universe. Our scenario features: (i) a decaying dark energy fluid (DDE), which undergoes a transition at $z \sim 5,000$, to raise today's value of the Hubble parameter -- addressing the $H_0$ tension, and (ii) an ultra-light axion (ULA), which starts oscillating at $z\gtrsim 10^4$, to suppress the matter power spectrum -- addressing the $S_8$ tension. Our Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses show that such a Dark Sector model fits a combination of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and Large Scale Structure (LSS) data slightly better than the $\Lambda$CDM model, while importantly reducing both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions with late universe probes ($\lesssim 3\sigma$). Combined with measurements from cosmic shear surveys, we find that the discrepancy on $S_8$ is reduced to the $1.4\sigma$ level, and the value of $H_0$ is further raised. Adding local supernovae measurements, we find that the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions are reduced to the $1.4\sigma$ and $1.2\sigma$ level respectively, with a significant improvement $\Delta\chi^2\simeq -18$ compared to the $\Lambda$CDM model. With this complete dataset, the DDE and ULA are detected at $\simeq 4\sigma$ and $\simeq2\sigma$, respectively. We discuss a possible particle physics realization of this model, with a dark confining gauge sector and its associated axion, although embedding the full details within microphysics remains an urgent open question. We discuss phenomenological viability of a novel inflationary model in the minimal gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario. In this model, cosmic inflation is realized in the flat direction along the messenger supermultiplets and a natural dark matter candidate is the gravitino from the out-of-equilibrium decay of the bino-like neutralino at late times, which is called the superWIMP scenario. The produced gravitino is warmish and can have a large free-streaming length; thus the cusp anomaly in the small scale structure formation may be mitigated. We show that the requirement of the Standard Model Higgs boson mass to be $m_{h^0}=125.1$ GeV gives a relation between the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background and the messenger mass $M$. We find, for the e-folding number $N_e=60$, the Planck 2018 constraints (TT, TE, EE+lowE+lensing+BK15+BAO, 68% confidence level) give $M > 3.64\times 10^7$ GeV. The gravitino dark matter mass is $m_{3/2} < 5.8$ GeV and the supersymmetry breaking scale $��$ is found to be in the range $(1.28-1.33)\times 10^6$ GeV. Recently, based on the theory of teleparallel gravity, a simple and ghost free parity violating gravity model was proposed in [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023], where the Weitzenb\"{o}ck connection was adopted for simplifying the calculations but breaks the local Lorentz symmetry explicitly. In this paper, we restore the local Lorentz symmetry of this model by giving up the Weitzenb\"{o}ck condition on the spin connection. With full local Lorentz covariance, this model is not a pure tetrad theory any more. We also apply the new version of this model to the universe with general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. This further generalizes the studies of [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023] where only the spatially flat background was considered. We investigate the enhancement of the curvature perturbations in a single-field slow-roll inflation with a spectator scalar field kinetically coupled to the inflaton. The coupling term with a periodic function of inflaton triggers the exponential growth of the spectator field perturbations, which indirectly amplifies the curvature perturbations to produce a sizable abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). This scenario is found to be insensitive to the inflationary background. We study two distinct populations of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) produced in this scenario, i.e., induced by the scalar perturbations during the inflationary era and the radiation-dominated era, respectively. With the appropriate choices of parameter space, we consider two PBH mass windows of great interest. One is PBHs of masses $\mathcal{O}(10^{-12})M_\odot$ that can be a vital component of dark matter, and the predicted total energy spectrum of SGWB shows a unique profile and is detectable by LISA and Taiji. The other is PBHs of masses $\mathcal{O}(10)M_\odot$ which can provide consistent explanation for the LIGO-Virgo events. At second-order, scalar perturbations can source traceless and transverse perturbations to the metric, called induced gravitational waves (IGW). The apparent gauge-dependence of the IGW obscures the interpretation of the stochastic gravitational-wave signal. To elucidate the gauge dependence, we study the IGW from manifestly gauge-invariant scalar perturbations, namely, the relative velocity between the baryon and cold dark matter. From this relative velocity perturbation, we compute the dimensionless gravitational wave power spectrum and the corresponding expected angular power spectrum of the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Gravitational-wave cosmology began in 2017 with the observation of the gravitational waves emitted in the merger of two neutron stars, and the coincident observation of the electromagnetic emission that followed. Although only a $30\%$ measurement of the Hubble constant was achieved, future observations may yield more precise measurements either through other coincident events or through cross correlation of gravitational-wave events with galaxy catalogs. Here, we implement a new way to measure the Hubble constant without an electromagnetic counterpart and through the use of the binary Love relations. These relations govern the tidal deformabilities of neutron stars in an equation-of-state insensitive way. Importantly, the Love relations depend on the component masses of the binary in the source frame. Since the gravitational-wave phase and amplitude depend on the chirp mass in the observer (and hence redshifted) frame, one can in principle combine the binary Love relations with the gravitational-wave data to directly measure the redshift, and thereby infer the value of the Hubble constant. We implement this approach in both real and synthetic data through a Bayesian parameter estimation study in a range of observing scenarios. We find that for the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA design sensitivity era, this method results in a similar measurement accuracy of the Hubble constant to those of current-day, dark-siren measurements. For third generation detectors, this accuracy improves to $\lesssim 10\%$ when combining measurements from binary neutron star events in the LIGO Voyager era, and to $\lesssim 2\%$ in the Cosmic Explorer era., accepted in PRD

Velocity fields can be reconstructed at cosmological scales from their influence on the correlation between the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. Effects that induce such correlations include the kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect and the moving-lens effect, both of which will be measured to high precision with upcoming cosmology experiments. Galaxy measurements also provide a window into measuring velocities from the effect of redshift-space distortions (RSDs). The information that can be accessed from the kSZ or RSDs, however, is limited by astrophysical uncertainties and systematic effects, which may significantly reduce our ability to constrain cosmological parameters such as $f\sigma_8$. It has been recently shown that quadruply lensed gravitational-wave (GW) events due to coalescing binaries can be localized to one or just a few galaxies, even in the absence of an electromagnetic counterpart. We discuss how this can be used to extract information on modified GW propagation, which is a crucial signature of modifications of gravity at cosmological scales. We show that, using quadruply lensed systems, it is possible to constrain the parameter $\Xi_0$ that characterizes modified GW propagation, without the need of imposing a prior on $H_0$. A LIGO/Virgo/Kagra network at target sensitivity might already get a significant measurement of $\Xi_0$, while a third generation GW detector such as the Einstein Telescope could reach a very interesting accuracy., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We consider searches for the inelastic scattering of low-mass dark matter at direct detection experiments, using the Migdal effect. We find that there are degeneracies between the dark matter mass and the mass splitting that are difficult to break. Using XENON1T data we set bounds on a previously unexplored region of the inelastic dark matter parameter space. For the case of exothermic scattering, we find that the Migdal effect allows xenon-based detectors to have sensitivity to dark matter with ${\cal O}(\mathrm{MeV})$ mass, far beyond what can be obtained with nuclear recoils alone., 6 pages, 4 figures (v2: 1 figure and additional discussion added)

Models of inflationary cosmology admit a choice of the metric for which the geometry of homogeneous isotropic solutions becomes flat Minkowski space in the infinite past. In this primordial flat frame all mass scales vanish in the infinite past and quantum scale symmetry is realized. The cosmological evolution is dominantly described by the slow increase of a scalar field which sets the scale of all masses. We construct the primordial flat frame for standard models of inflation as Starobinsky inflation or chaotic inflation. In particular, we discuss the evolution of inhomogeneous solutions in the neighborhood of the homogeneous isotropic background solution and their relation to the observable primordial fluctuation spectrum. If the propagators for the graviton and scalar field remain regular, our observed inhomogeneous Universe can be extrapolated back to the infinite past in physical time. In this case there is no physical big-bang singularity -- the latter reflects only a singular choice of ``field coordinates". We investigate Hawking evaporation of a population of primordial black holes (PBHs) prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) as a mechanism to achieve asymmetric reheating of two sectors coupled solely by gravity. While the visible sector is reheated by the inflaton or a modulus, the dark sector is reheated by PBHs. Compared to inflationary or modular reheating of both sectors, there are two advantages: $(i)$ inflaton or moduli mediated operators that can subsequently thermalize the dark sector with the visible sector are not relevant to the asymmetric reheating process; $(ii)$ the mass and abundance of the PBHs provide parametric control of the thermal history of the dark sector, and in particular the ratio of the temperatures of the two sectors. Asymmetric reheating with PBHs turns out to have a particularly rich dark sector phenomenology, which we explore using a single self-interacting real scalar field in the dark sector as a template. Four thermal histories, involving non-relativistic and relativistic dark matter (DM) at chemical equilibrium, followed by the presence or absence of cannibalism, are explored. These histories are then constrained by the observed relic abundance in the current Universe and the Bullet Cluster. We study in some detail an interacting cosmological model based on two canonical scalar fields starting from a Lagrangian description. Contrary to other more phenomenological approaches where non-relativistic matter and dark energy are cosmological perfect fluids, and where a source term is added by hand at the level of the continuity equations, here within Einstein's theory we model the dark sector, which dominates the evolution of the universe, as two minimally coupled scalar fields, out of which the first play the role of dark matter and the second plays the role of dark energy. We compute both the deceleration parameter and the distance modulus versus red-shift, and we demonstrate that the model is capable of explaining the current cosmic acceleration. We find that a negative coupling constant implies two distinctive features, which comprise two robust predictions of the model studied in the present work, and which are the following: a) a transient acceleration phase, and b) a collapsing Universe, or in other words an initial expansion which is followed by a contraction leading eventually to a Big-Crunch., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

It was recently found that, when linearised in the absence of matter, 58 cases of the general gravitational theory with quadratic curvature and torsion are (i) free from ghosts and tachyons and (ii) power-counting renormalisable. We inspect the nonlinear Hamiltonian structure of the eight cases whose primary constraints do not depend on the curvature tensor. We confirm the particle spectra and unitarity of all these theories in the linear regime. We uncover qualitative dynamical changes in the nonlinear regimes of all eight cases, suggesting at least a broken gauge symmetry, and possibly the activation of negative kinetic energy spin-parity sectors and acausal behaviour. Two of the cases propagate a pair of massless modes at the linear level, and were interesting as candidate theories of gravity. However, we identify these modes with vector excitations, rather than the tensor polarisations of the graviton. Electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) is sourced by nonstandard $CP$-violating interactions of the Higgs boson with fermions, usually taken to be the top quark, enhanced by its large Yukawa coupling. Numerous papers have studied EWBG sourced by lighter fermions, including the tau lepton and off-diagonal quark mass terms. We critically reassess the viability of EWBG in these scenarios, comparing the predictions based on the semiclassical (WKB) formalism for the source term to those from the VEV insertion approximation (VIA), using updated values for the collision terms, and clarifying discrepancies in the definition of the weak sphaleron rate. The VIA systematically predicts a baryon asymmetry that is orders of magnitude larger than the WKB formalism. We trace this to the differing shapes of the $CP$-violating source terms in the two formalisms, showing that the additional spatial derivative in the WKB source term causes large cancellations when it is integrated over the bubble wall profile. An important exception is a source term from $c$-$t$ quark mixing, where the WKB prediction also allows for a realistically large baryon asymmetry. In contrast, the analogous $b$-$s$ mixing source is found to be orders of magnitude too small., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Ultralight axion-like particles are well-motivated dark matter candidates that are the target of numerous direct detection efforts. In the vicinity of the Solar System, such particles can be treated as oscillating scalar fields. The velocity dispersion of the Milky Way determines a coherence time of about 10^6 oscillations, beyond which the amplitude of the axion field fluctuates stochastically. Any analysis of data from an axion direct detection experiment must carefully account for this stochastic behavior to properly interpret the results. This is especially true for experiments sensitive to the gradient of the axion field that are unable to collect data for many coherence times. Indeed, the direction, in addition to the amplitude, of the axion field gradient fluctuates stochastically. We present the first complete stochastic treatment for the gradient of the axion field, including multiple computationally efficient methods for performing likelihood-based data analysis, which can be applied to any axion signal, regardless of coherence time. Additionally, we demonstrate that ignoring the stochastic behavior of the gradient of the axion field can potentially result in failure to discover a true axion signal., Comment: 16 pages, figures

Small-scale inhomogeneities in the baryon density around recombination have been proposed as a solution to the tension between local and global determinations of the Hubble constant. These baryon clumping models make distinct predictions for the cosmic microwave background anisotropy power spectra on small angular scales. We use recent data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope to test these predictions. No evidence for baryon clumping is found, assuming a range of parameterizations for time-independent baryon density probability distribution functions. An excess of 511 keV photons has been detected from the central region of the Milky Way. It has been suggested that the positrons responsible for this signal could be produced through the Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes. After evaluating the constraints from INTEGRAL, COMPTEL, and Voyager 1, we find that black holes in mass range of $\sim(1-4)\times10^{16}$ g could potentially produce this signal if they make up a small fraction of the total dark matter density. Proposed MeV-scale gamma-ray telescopes such as AMEGO or e-ASTROGAM should be able to test this class of scenarios by measuring the diffuse gamma ray emission from the Milky Way's inner halo., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Exotic electromagnetic energy injection in the early Universe may alter cosmological recombination, and ultimately cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. Moreover, if energy injection is inhomogeneous, it may induce a spatially-varying ionization fraction, and non-Gaussianity in the CMB. The observability of these signals, however, is contingent upon how far the injected particles propagate and deposit their energy into the primordial plasma, relative to the characteristic scale of energy injection fluctuations. In this study we inspect the spatial properties of energy deposition and perturbed recombination resulting from an inhomogeneous energy injection of sub-10 MeV photons, relevant to accreting primordial black holes (PBHs). We develop a novel Monte-Carlo radiation transport code accounting for all relevant photon interactions in this energy range, and including secondary electron energy deposition efficiency through a new analytic approximation. For a specified injected photon spectrum, the code outputs an injection-to-deposition Green's function depending on time and distance from the injection point. Combining this output with a linearized solution of the perturbed recombination problem, we derive time- and scale-dependent deposition-to-ionization Green's functions. We apply this general framework to accreting PBHs, whose luminosity is strongly spatially modulated by supersonic relative velocities between cold dark matter and baryons. We find that the resulting spatial fluctuations of the free-electron fraction are of the same magnitude as its mean deviation from standard recombination, from which current CMB power spectra constraints are derived. This work suggests that the sensitivity to accreting PBHs might be substantially improved by propagating these inhomogeneities to CMB anisotropy power spectra and non-Gaussian statistics, which we study in subsequent papers., Comment: Version accepted in PRD

Axion is a promising candidate for ultralight dark matter which may cause a polarization rotation of laser light. Recently, a new idea of probing the axion dark matter by optical linear cavities used in the arms of gravitational wave detectors has been proposed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 111301 (2019)]. In this article, a realistic scheme of the axion dark matter search with the arm cavity transmission ports is revisited. Since photons detected by the transmission ports travel in the cavity for odd-number of times, the effect of axion dark matter on their phases is not cancelled out and the sensitivity at low-mass range is significantly improved compared to the search using reflection ports. We also take into account the stochastic nature of the axion field and the availability of the two detection ports in the gravitational wave detectors. The sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling, $g_{a\gamma}$, of the ground-based gravitational wave detector, such as Advanced LIGO, with 1-year observation is estimated to be $g_{a\gamma} \sim 3\times10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ below the axion mass of $10^{-15}$ eV, which improves upon the limit achieved by the CERN Axion Solar Telescope., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We show that relic vector fields can significantly impact a spectrum of primordial gravitational waves in the post-inflationary era. We consider a triplet of U(1) fields in a homogeneous, isotropic configuration. The interaction between the gravitational waves and the vector fields, from the end of reheating to the present day, yields novel spectral features. The amplitude, tilt, shape, and net chirality of the gravitational wave spectrum are shown to depend on the abundance of the electric- and magnetic-like vector fields. Our results show that even a modest abundance can have strong implications for efforts to detect the imprint of gravitational waves on the cosmic microwave background polarization. We find that a vector field comprising less than two percent of the energy density during the radiation dominated era can have a greater than order unity effect on the predicted inflationary gravitational wave spectrum., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, comments welcome

Multiple scalar fields appear in vast modern particle physics and gravity models. When they couple to gravity non-minimally, conformal transformation is utilized to bring the theory into Einstein frame. However, the kinetic terms of scalar fields are usually not canonical, which makes analytic treatment difficult. Here we investigate under what conditions the theories can be transformed to the quasi-canonical form, in which case the effective metric tensor in field space is conformally flat. We solve the relevant nonlinear partial differential equations for arbitrary number of scalar fields and present several solutions that may be useful for future phenomenological model building, including the $\sigma$-model with a particular non-minimal coupling. It has been intensively discussed if modifications in the dynamics of the Universe at late times is able or not to solve the $H_0$ tension. On the other hand, it has also been argued that the $H_0$ tension is actually a tension on the supernova absolute magnitude $M_B$. In this work, we robustly constraint $M_B$ using Pantheon Supernovae Ia (SN) sample, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data, and assess the $M_B$ tension by comparing three theoretical models, namely the standard $\Lambda$CDM, the $w$CDM and a non-gravitational interaction (IDE) between dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM). The merger rate of primordial black holes depends on their initial clustering. In the absence of primordial non-Gaussianity correlating short and large-scales, primordial black holes are distributed \`a la Poisson at the time of their formation. However, primordial non-Gaussianity of the local-type may correlate primordial black holes on large-scales. We study the fit of cosmological models with two additional free parameters $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $\xi_e$ in addition to the parameters of $\Lambda$CDM. We introduce extra radiation components such as hot axions or sterile neutrinos in addition to the energy density of neutrinos with large neutrino degeneracy. Then, a larger $N_\mathrm{eff}$ is allowed without spoiling Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), as positive neutrino degeneracy $\xi_e$ could improve BBN fit. By analysing the data from Planck, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), BBN and type-Ia supernovae (SNeIa), it can be seen that the Hubble tension can be ameliorated for $\xi_{e}\simeq 0.04$ and $0.3 \lesssim \Delta N_\mathrm{eff} \lesssim 0.6$., Comment: 12 pages 3 figures

We perform a comprehensive study of cosmological constraints on non-standard neutrino self-interactions using cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillation data. We consider different scenarios for neutrino self-interactions distinguished by the fraction of neutrino states allowed to participate in self-interactions and how the relativistic energy density, N$_{\textrm{eff}}$, is allowed to vary. Specifically, we study cases in which: all neutrino states self-interact and N$_{\textrm{eff}}$ varies; two species free-stream, which we show alleviates tension with laboratory constraints, while the energy in the additional interacting states varies; and a variable fraction of neutrinos self-interact with either the total N$_{\textrm{eff}}$ fixed to the Standard Model value or allowed to vary. In no case do we find compelling evidence for new neutrino interactions or non-standard values of N$_{\textrm{eff}}$. In several cases we find additional modes with neutrino decoupling occurring at lower redshifts $z_{\textrm{dec}} \sim 10^{3-4}$. We do a careful analysis to examine whether new neutrino self-interactions solve or alleviate the so-called $H_0$ tension and find that, when all Planck 2018 CMB temperature and polarization data is included, none of these examples ease the tension more than allowing a variable N$_{\textrm{eff}}$ comprised of free-streaming particles. We investigate a generalized form of the phenomenologically emergent dark energy model, known as generalized emergent dark energy (GEDE), introduced by Li and Shafieloo [Astrophys. J. {\bf 902}, 58 (2020)] in light of a series of cosmological probes and considering the evolution of the model at the level of linear perturbations. This model introduces a free parameter $\Delta$ that can discriminate between the $\Lambda$CDM (corresponds to $\Delta=0$) or the phenomenologically emergent dark energy (PEDE) (corresponds to $\Delta=1$) models, allowing us to determine which model is preferred most by the fit of the observational datasets. We find evidence in favor of the GEDE model for Planck alone and in combination with R19, while the Bayesian model comparison is inconclusive when Supernovae Type Ia or BAO data are included. In particular, we find that $\Lambda$CDM model is disfavored at more than $2\sigma$ CL for most of the observational datasets considered in this work and PEDE is in agreement with Planck 2018+BAO+R19 combination within $1\sigma$ CL., Comment: 10 pages, 4 tables and 5 figures; version published in Phys. Dark matter (DM) could be a relic of freeze-in through a light mediator, where the DM is produced by extremely feeble, IR-dominated processes in the thermal Standard Model plasma. In the simplest viable models with the DM mass below the MeV scale, the DM has a small effective electric charge and is born with a nonthermal phase-space distribution. This DM candidate would cause observable departures from standard cosmological evolution. In this work, we combine data from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), Lyman-$\alpha$ forest, quasar lensing, stellar streams, and Milky Way satellite abundances to set a lower limit on freeze-in DM masses up to $\sim 20\,$keV, with the exact constraint depending on whether the DM thermalizes in its own sector. We perform forecasts for the CMB-S4 experiment, the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array, and the Vera Rubin Observatory, finding that freeze-in DM masses up to $\sim 80\,$keV can be explored. We identify potential sources of decoherence for $U(1)$ gauge bosons from a cosmological standpoint. Besides interactions with different species in the cosmological medium, we also consider effects due to the expansion of the Universe, which can produce particles (especially scalars) than can potentially interact with the photon in a quantum state. We look in particular at the case of axion-like particles and their predicted decay channels in our analysis. These interactions are shown to have a negligible effect as far as decoherence goes. Interaction rates with CMB radiation or through Thomson scattering are small, so that the interstellar medium remains the biggest decoherence factor. Thus, quantum teleportation experiments with photon energies in the range $1$-$10$ keV should be feasible at cosmological distances up to the galaxy formation epoch or beyond ($z \sim 100$)., Comment: 11 pages

We investigate the behavior of null geodesics near future null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In particular, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of null geodesics that correspond to worldlines of photons initially emitted in the directions tangential to the constant radial surfaces in the Bondi coordinates. The analysis is performed for general dimensions, and the difference between the four-dimensional cases and the higher-dimensional cases is stressed. In four dimensions, some assumptions are required to guarantee the null geodesics to reach future null infinity, in addition to the conditions of asymptotic flatness. Without these assumptions, gravitational waves may prevent photons from reaching null infinity. In higher dimensions, by contrast, such assumptions are not necessary, and gravitational waves do not affect the asymptotic behavior of null geodesics., 23 pages, published version, in v3 minor corrections

We propose a new reionization probe that uses cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations; the cross-correlation between fluctuations in the CMB optical depth which probes the integrated electron density, $\delta\tau$, and the Compton $y$-map which probes the integrated electron pressure. This cross-correlation is much less contaminated than the $y$-map power spectrum by late-time cluster contributions. In addition, this cross-correlation can constrain the temperature of ionized bubbles while the optical-depth fluctuations and kinetic SZ effect can not. We measure this new observable using a Planck $y$-map as well as a map of optical-depth fluctuations that we reconstruct from Planck CMB temperature data. We use our measurements to derive a first CMB-only upper limit on the temperature inside ionized bubbles, $T_{\rm b}\lesssim 7.0\times10^5\,$K ($2\,\sigma$). We also present future forecasts, assuming a fiducial model with characteristic reionization bubble size $R_{\rm b}=5\,$Mpc and $T_{\rm b}=5\times10^4\,$K. The signal-to-noise ratio of the fiducial cross-correlation using a signal dominated PICO-like $y$-map becomes $\simeq7$ with CMB-S4 $\delta\tau$ and $\simeq13$ with CMB-HD $\delta\tau$. For the fiducial model, we predict that the CMB-HD $-$ PICO cross-correlation should achieve an accurate measurement of the reionization parameters; $T_{\rm b}\simeq 49800^{+4500}_{-5100}\,$K and $R_{\rm b}\simeq 5.09^{+0.66}_{-0.79}\,$Mpc. Since the power spectrum of the electron density fluctuations is constrained by the $\delta\tau$ auto spectrum, the temperature constraints should be only weakly model-dependent on the details of the electron distributions and should be statistically representative of the temperature in ionized bubbles during reionization. We propose a novel probe of fundamental physics that involves the exploration of temporal correlations between the multi-frequency electromagnetic (EM) signal and the sub-threshold GW signal or stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) originating from coalescing binaries. This method will be useful for the detection of EM counterparts associated with the sub-threshold/SGWB signal. Exploiting the time delay between concomitant emission of the gravitational wave and EM signals enables inference of the redshifts of the contributing sources by studying the time delay dilation due to cosmological expansion, provided that the time-lag between the emission of gravitational wave signal and the EM signal acts like a standard clock. Measurement of the inevitable time-domain correlations between different frequencies of gravitational and EM waves, most notably in gamma-rays, will test several aspects of fundamental physics and gravitation theory, and enable a new pathway for current and future gravitational wave telescopes to study the universal nature of binary compact objects to high redshifts., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Primordial gravitational waves (GWs) carry the imprints of the dynamics of the universe during its earliest stages. With a variety of GW detectors being proposed to operate over a wide range of frequencies, there is great expectation that observations of primordial GWs can provide us with an unprecedented window to the physics operating during inflation and reheating. In this work, we closely examine the effects of the regime of reheating on the spectrum of primordial GWs observed today. We consider a scenario wherein the phase of reheating is described by an averaged equation of state (EoS) parameter with an abrupt transition to radiation domination as well as a scenario wherein there is a gradual change in the effective EoS parameter to that of radiation due to the perturbative decay of the inflaton. We show that the perturbative decay of the inflaton leads to oscillations in the spectrum of GWs, which, if observed, can possibly help us decipher finer aspects of the reheating mechanism. We also examine the effects of a secondary phase of reheating arising due to a brief epoch driven possibly by an exotic, non-canonical, scalar field. Interestingly, we find that, for suitable values of the EoS parameter governing the secondary phase of reheating, the GWs can be of the strength as suggested by the recent NANOGrav observations. We conclude with a discussion of the wider implications of our analysis., Comment: PRD accepted

The canonical velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS) model for cosmic string evolution must be calibrated using high resolution numerical simulations, We exploit our state of the art graphics processing unit accelerated implementation of the evolution of local Abelian-Higgs string networks to provide a detailed and statistically robust calibration of the VOS model. We rely on the largest set of high resolution simulations carried out to date, with a wide range of cosmological expansion rates, and explore the impact of key numerical parameters, including the dynamic range (comparing box sizes from $1024^3$ to $4096^3$), the lattice spacing, and the choice of numerical estimators for the string velocity. We explore the sensitivity of the VOS model parameters to these numerical parameters, with a particular emphasis on the observationally crucial loop chopping efficiency, and also identify key differences between the equation of state and conjugate momentum estimators for the string velocities, showing that the latter one is more reliable for fast expansion rates (while in Minkowski space the opposite has been previously shown).
