We address the recent experiment (S. Tewari et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 035420 (2016)) where the suppression of phase coherence of a single-electron wave packet created at the edge of a quantum Hall (QH) system at filling factor 2 has been investigated with the help of an electronic Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. The authors of the experiment have observed an unexpected behavior of phase coherence that saturates at high energies instead of vanishing, presumably suggesting the relaxation of a wave packet to the ground state before it arrives to the MZ interferometer. Here, we theoretically investigate this situation using the model of edge states [I. P. Levkivskyi and E. V. Sukhorukov, Phys. Rev. B 78, 045322 (2008)], which accounts for the strong Coulomb interaction between the two electron channels at the edge of a QH system. We conclude that the observed phenomenon cannot be explained within this model for the reason that under an assumption of linearity of the electron spectrum at low energies, the system remains integrable in terms of the collective charge excitations and therefore full relaxation to the ground state is not possible, despite strong interactions. As a result, the degree of the phase coherence decreases with the energy of the initial state in a power-law manner. Since this does not happen in the experiment, a different physical phenomenon may take place at the edge of a QH state, which deserves further investigation. We present a method for simulating the time evolution of one-dimensional correlated electron-phonon systems which combines the time-evolving block decimation algorithm with a dynamical optimization of the local basis. This approach can reduce the computational cost by orders of magnitude when boson fluctuations are large. The method is demonstrated on the nonequilibrium Holstein polaron by comparison with exact simulations in a limited functional space and on the scattering of an electronic wave packet by local phonon modes. We report propagating bound microcavity polariton soliton arrays consisting of multipeak structures either along {x) or perpendicular (y) to the direction of propagation. Soliton arrays of up to five solitons are observed, with the number of solitons controlled by the size and power of the triggering laser pulse. The breakup along the x direction occurs when the effective area of the trigger pulse exceeds the characteristic soliton size determined by polariton-polariton interactions. Narrowing of soliton emission in energy-momentum space indicates phase locking between adjacent solitons, consistent with numerical modeling which predicts stable multihump soliton solutions. In the y direction, the breakup originates from inhomogeneity across the wave front in the transverse direction which develops into a stable array only in the solitonic regime via phase-dependent interactions of propagating fronts. Linear gravity water waves are highly dispersive; therefore, the spreading of initially short wave trains characterizes water surface waves, and is a universal property of a dispersive medium. Only if there is sufficient nonlinearity does this envelope admit solitary solutions which do not spread and remain in fixed forms. Here, in contrast to the nonlinear localized wave packets, we present both theoretically and experimentally a new type of linearly nondispersive water wave, having a cosine-Gauss envelope, as well as its higher-order Hermite cosine-Gauss variations. We show that these waves preserve their width despite the inherent dispersion while propagating in an 18-m wave tank, accompanied by a slowly varying carrier- envelope phase. These wave packets exhibit self-healing; i.e., they are restored after bypassing an obstacle. We further demonstrate that these nondispersive waves are robust to weakly nonlinear perturbations. In the strong nonlinear regime, symmetry breaking of these waves is observed, but their cosine-Gauss shapes are still approximately preserved during propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A recent study [Rosati, Dolcini, and Rossi, Appl. Phys. Lett. 106, 243101 (2015)] has predicted that, while in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) an electronic wave packet experiences the typical spatial diffusion of conventional materials, in metallic SWNTs, its shape remains essentially unaltered up to micrometer distances at room temperature, even in the presence of the electron-phonon coupling. Here, by utilizing a Lindblad-based density-matrix approach enabling us to account for both dissipation and decoherence effects, we test such a prediction by analyzing various aspects that were so far unexplored. In particular, accounting for initial nonequilibrium excitations, characterized by an excess energy E0, and including both intraand interband phonon scattering, we show that for realistically high values of E0 the electronic diffusion is extremely small and nearly independent of its energetic distribution, in spite of a significant energy-dissipation and decoherence dynamics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effect is robust with respect to the variation of the chemical potential. Our results thus suggest that metallic SWNTs are a promising platform to realize quantum channels for the nondispersive transmission of electronic wave packets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This Letter presents the experimental characterization of nonreciprocal elastic wave transmission in a single-mode elastic waveguide. This asymmetric system is obtained by coupling a selection layer with a conversion layer: the selection component is provided by a phononic crystal, while the conversion is achieved by a nonlinear self-demodulation effect in a 3D unconsolidated granular medium. A quantitative experimental study of this acoustic rectifier indicates a high rectifying ratio, up to 106, with wide band (10 kHz) and an audible effect. We study the equilibration behavior of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box, with respect to a coarse-grained position measurement (whether it lies in a certain spatial window or not). We show that equilibration in this context indeed takes place and does so very rapidly, in a time comparable to the time for the initial wave packet to reach the edges of the box. We demonstrate how the technique of ultrafast resonant x-ray scattering can be applied to imaging dynamics of electronic wave packets in crystals. We study scattering patterns from crystals with electron dynamics in valence bands taking into account that inelastic and elastic scattering events induced by a broadband probe pulse cannot be separated through the spectroscopy of the scattered photon. As a result, scattering patterns are not determined by the structure factor at the time of measurement, but can encode the instantaneous electron current between scattering atoms. We provide examples of how the interatomic electron current in a periodic structure can be extracted from a single scattering pattern by considering valence electron-hole motion in (KBr)108 and Ge83 clusters. Phonons are often regarded as delocalized quasiparticles with certain energy and momentum. The anharmonic interaction of phonons determines macroscopic properties of the solid, such as thermal expansion or thermal conductivity, and a detailed understanding becomes increasingly important for functional nanostructures. Although phonon-phonon scattering processes depicted in simple wave-vector diagrams are the basis of theories describing these macroscopic phenomena, experiments directly accessing these coupling channels are scarce. We synthesize monochromatic acoustic phonon wave packets with only a few cycles to introduce nonlinear phononics as the acoustic counterpart to nonlinear optics. Control of the wave vector, bandwidth, and consequently spatial extent of the phonon wave packets allows us to observe nonlinear phonon interaction, in particular, second harmonic generation, in real time by wave-vector-sensitive Brillouin scattering with x-rays and optical photons. Recent numerical calculation of the intrinsic thermal Hall conductivity of nodal d-wave superconductors in the mixed state revealed a rapid increase of this quantity above an onset temperature. Interestingly, this defines a measurable energy scale in an otherwise gapless state. Using the mathematics of magnetic coherent states, in this paper such energy scale is related to a dynamical process associated with the Andreev scattering of an electron wave packet moving along the constant energy contours in the momentum space. This energy scale is then used to obtain an improved scaling collapse of numerically calculated thermal Hah conductivity in a tight-binding model as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and the d-wave pairing amplitude at various band fillings. The results indicate that the mentioned onset temperature is associated with the ability of the quasiparticle wave packet to complete its semiclassical orbit before it is appreciably scattered by the superconducting condensate. The dynamics of wave packets in the fractional Schrodinger equation is still an open problem. The difficulty stems from the fact that the fractional Laplacian derivative is essentially a nonlocal operator. We investigate analytically and numerically the propagation of optical beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation with a harmonic potential. We find that the propagation of one- and two-dimensional input chirped Gaussian beams is not harmonic. In one dimension, the beam propagates along a zigzag trajectory in real space, which corresponds to a modulated anharmonic oscillation in momentum space. In two dimensions, the input Gaussian beam evolves into a breathing ring structure in both real and momentum spaces, which forms a filamented funnel-like aperiodic structure. The beams remain localized in propagation, but with increasing distance display an increasingly irregular behavior, unless both the linear chirp and the transverse displacement of the incident beam are zero. A quantum reaction approach to low-energy collisions of weakly bound few-body nuclei, based on the time-dependent wave-packet method, is presented in detail. In contrast to existing models that use this perspective, the approach separates the complete and incomplete fusion from the total fusion. Calculations performed within a one-dimensional model with two degrees of freedom for 6Li + 209Bi at energies around the Coulomb barrier demonstrate that converged reliable excitation functions for total, incomplete, and complete fusion can be obtained with this type of approach. We report an experimental technique to measure and manipulate the arrival-time and energy distributions of electrons emitted from a semiconductor electron pump, operated as both a single-electron source and a two-electron source. Using an energy-selective detector whose transmission we control on picosecond time scales, we can measure directly the electron arrival-time distribution and we determine the upper bound to the distribution width to be 30 ps. We study the effects of modifying the shape of the voltage wave form that drives the electron pump, and show that our results can be explained by a tunneling model of the emission mechanism. We reply to the preceding Comment that attempts to clarify the connection between chaos and entanglement exposed in our previous paper [Phys. Rev. E 83,016207 (2011)]. We present additional computations that show the argument exposed in the Comment to explain the entangling power of some regular states is not important in the present case. More fundamentally we argue that the example chosen in the Comment is not the most significant in order to understand why specific regular dynamics can entangle as efficiently as when the corresponding classical dynamics is chaotic. A quantum-mechanical analysis of hyperfast (faster than ballistic) diffusion of a quantum wave packet in random optical lattices is presented. The main motivation of the presented analysis is experimental demonstrations of hyperdiffusive spreading of a wave packet in random photonic lattices [L. Levi et al. Nature Phys. 8. 912 (2012)]. A rigorous quantum-mechanical calculation of the mean probability amplitude is suggested, and it is shown that the power-law spreading of the mean-squared displacement (MSD) is (x2(t)) ∼ tα, where 2 < α ≤ 3. The values of the transport exponent α depend on the correlation properties of the random potential V(x,t), which describes random inhomogeneities of the medium. In particular, when the random potential is 5 correlated in time, the quantum wave packet spreads according Richardson turbulent diffusion with the MSD ∼ t3. Hyperdiffusion with α = 12/5 is also obtained for arbitrary correlation properties of the random potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The presence of a weak second-harmonic field in an intense-laser ionization experiment affects the momentum-resolved electron yield, depending on the relative phase between the ω and the 2ω component. The proposed two-color "phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy" quantifies for each final electron momentum a relative-phase contrast (RPC) and a phase of the phase (PP) describing how much and with which phase lag, respectively, the yield changes as a function of the relative phase. Experimental results for RPC and PP spectra for rare gas atoms and CO2 are presented. The spectra demonstrate a rather universal structure that is analyzed with the help of a simple model based on electron trajectories, wave-packet spreading, and (multiple) rescattering. We observe the propagation dynamics of surface gravity water waves, having an Airy function envelope, in both the linear and the nonlinear regimes. In the linear regime, the shape of the envelope is preserved while propagating in an 18-m water tank, despite the inherent dispersion of the wave packet. The Airy wave function can propagate at a velocity that is slower (or faster if the Airy envelope is inverted) than the group velocity. Furthermore, the introduction of the Airy wave packet as surface water waves enables the observation of its position-dependent chirp and cubic-phase offset, predicted more than 35 years ago, for the first time. We investigate the trade-off between information gain and disturbance for von Neumann measurements on spin-1/2 particles, and derive the measurement pointer state that saturates this trade-off, which turns out to be highly unusual. We apply this result to the question of whether the nonlocality of a single particle from an entangled pair can be shared among multiple observers that act sequentially and independently of each other, and show that an arbitrarily long sequence of such observers can all violate the Clauser-Horne- Shimony-Holt-Bell inequality. The ability to probe energy flow in molecules, following the absorption of ultraviolet light, is crucial to unraveling photophysical phenomena. Here we excite a coherent superposition of vibrational states in the first excited electronic state (S1) in catechol, resulting in a vibrational wave packet. The observed quantum beats, assigned to superpositions of the low-frequency, and strongly mixed, O-H torsional mode τ2, elegantly demonstrate how changes in geometry upon photoionization from the state to the ground state of the cation (D0) enables one to probe energy flow at the very early stages of photoexcitation in this biological chromophore. The first-order correlation function, which is accessible experimentally, contains all essential information about the state of a system of noninteracting electrons. Here I discuss how this function can be used to answer the question whether an electronic source working periodically emits a train of single particles or the emitted state is a multiparticle one. Using as an example a train of Lorentzian-shaped single-electron excitations, levitons, I demonstrate that the correlation function in the time domain is able to distinguish clearly single- and multiparticle states, while the correlation function in the energy domain is not. Nevertheless, the correlation function in the energy domain is able to show a transition from a single- to a multiparticle state when some parameter of the source is varied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The long-time effect of weak rotation on an internal solitary wave is the decay into inertia-gravity waves and the eventual emergence of a coherent, steadily propagating, nonlinear wave packet. There is currently no entirely satisfactory explanation as to why these wave packets form. Here the initial value problem is considered within the context of the Gardner-Ostrovsky, or rotation-modified extended Korteweg-de Vries, equation. The linear Gardner-Ostrovsky equation has maximum group velocity at a critical wave number, often called the zero-dispersion point. It is found here that a nonlinear splitting of the wave-number spectrum at the zero-dispersion point, where energy is shifted into the modulationally unstable regime of the Gardner-Ostrovsky equation, is responsible for the wave-packet formation. Numerical comparisons of the decay of a solitary wave in the Gardner-Ostrovsky equation and a derived nonlinear Schrodinger equation at the zero-dispersion point are used to confirm the spectral splitting. Readout and retrieval processes are proposed for efficient, high-fidelity quantum state transfer between a matter qubit, encoded in the level structure of a single atom or ion, and a photonic qubit, encoded in a time-reversal-symmetric single-photon wave packet. They are based on controlling spontaneous photon emission and absoiption of a matter qubit on demand in free space by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. As these processes do not involve mode selection by high-finesse cavities or photon transport through optical fibers, they offer interesting perspectives as basic building blocks for free-space quantum-communication protocols. We present a rigorous study of quantum diffusion of a relativistic particle subjected to a time-dependent random potential with δ correlation in time. We find that in the asymptotic time limit the particle wave packet spreads ballistically in contrast with the nonrelativistic case, which in the same situation exhibits superballistic diffusion. We demonstrate strong laser-field-free orientation of absolute-ground-state carbonyl sulfide molecules. The molecules are oriented by the combination of a 485-ps-long nonresonant laser pulse and a weak static electric field. The edges of the laser pulse create a coherent superposition of two rotational states resulting in revivals of strong transient molecular orientation after the laser pulse. The experimentally attained degree of orientation (cos θ) ≈ 0.6 corresponds to the theoretical maximum for mixing of the two states. We study Anderson localization of the classical lattice waves in a chain with mass impurities distributed randomly through a power-law relation s-(1+α) with s as the distance between two successive impurities and α>0. This model of disorder is long-range correlated and is inspired by the peculiar structure of the complex optical systems known as L\'evy glasses. Using theoretical arguments and numerics, we show that in the regime in which the average distance between impurities is finite with infinite variance, the small-frequency behaviour of the localization length is ξα(ω)~ω-α. The physical interpretation of this result is that, for small frequencies and long wavelengths, the waves feel an effective disorder whose fluctuations are scale-dependent. Numerical simulations show that an initially localized wavepacket attains, at large times, a characteristic inverse power-law front with an α-dependent exponent which can be estimated analytically. Periodic driving can create topological phases of matter absent in static systems. In terms of the displacement of the position expectation value of a time-evolving wave packet in a closed system, a type of adiabatic dynamics in periodically driven systems is studied for general initial states possessing coherence between different Floquet bands. Under one symmetry assumption, the displacement of the wave-packet center over one adiabatic cycle is found to consist of two components independent of the time scale of the adiabatic cycle: a weighted integral of the Berry curvature summed over all Floquet bands, plus an interband coherence induced correction. The found correction is beyond a naive application of the quantum adiabatic theorem but survives in the adiabatic limit due to interband coherence. Our theoretical results are hence of general interest towards an improved understanding of the quantum adiabatic theorem. Our theory is checked using a periodically driven superlattice model with nontrivial topological phases. In addition to probing topological phase transitions, the adiabatic dynamics studied in this work is now also anticipated to be useful in manifesting coherence and decoherence effects in the representation of Floquet bands. We investigate the possibility of realizing a disorder-induced topological Floquet spectrum in two-dimensional periodically driven systems. Such a state would be a dynamical realization of the topological Anderson insulator. We establish that a disorder-induced trivial-to-topological transition indeed occurs, and characterize it by computing the disorder averaged Bott index, suitably defined for the time-dependent system. The presence of edge states in the topological state is confirmed by exact numerical time evolution of wave packets on the edge of the system. We consider the optimal driving regime for experimentally observing the Floquet topological Anderson insulator, and discuss its possible realization in photonic lattices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Double kicked rotors (DKRs) appear to be the simplest nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems featuring classical translational symmetry in phase space (i.e., in angular momentum) for an infinite set of values (the rational ones) of a parameter η. The experimental realization of quantum DKRs by atom-optics methods motivates the study of the double kicked particle (DKP). The latter reduces, at any fixed value of the conserved quasimomentum βħ, to a generalized DKR, the "β-DKR." We determine general quantum properties of β-DKRs and DKPs for arbitrary rational η. The quasienergy problem of β-DKRs is shown to be equivalent to the energy eigenvalue problem of a finite strip of coupled lattice chains. Exact connections are then obtained between quasienergy spectra of β-DKRs for all β in a generically infinite set. The general conditions of quantum resonance for β-DKRs are shown to be the simultaneous rationality of η, β, and a scaled Planck constant ħs. For rational ħs and generic values of β, the quasienergy spectrum is found to have a staggered-ladder structure. Other spectral structures, resembling Hofstadter butterflies, are also found. Finally, we show the existence of particular DKP wave-packets whose quantum dynamics is free, i.e., the evolution frequencies of expectation values in these wave-packets are independent of the nonintegrability. We present a theoretical study of the photoelectron attosecond beating due to interference of two-photon transitions in the presence of autoionizing states. We show that, as a harmonic traverses a resonance, both the phase shift and frequency of the sideband beating significantly vary with photon energy. Furthermore, the beating between two resonant paths persists even when the pump and the probe pulses do not overlap, thus providing a nonholographic interferometric means to reconstruct coherent metastable wave packets. We characterize these phenomena by means of a general analytical model that accounts for the effect of both intermediate and final resonances on two-photon processes. The model predictions are in excellent agreement with those of accurate ab initio calculations for the helium atom in the region of the N = 2 doubly excited states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The trajectory surface hopping method for quantum dynamics is reformulated in the space of many-particle states to include entanglement and correlation of trajectories. Used to describe many-body correlation effects in electronic structure theories, second quantization is applied to semiclassical trajectories. The new method allows coupling between individual trajectories via energy flow and common phase evolution. It captures the properties of a wave packet, such as branching, Heisenberg uncertainty, and decoherence. The influence of magnetic impurities on the transport properties of graphene is investigated in the regime of strong applied electric fields. As a result of electron-hole pair creation, the response becomes nonlinear and dependent on the magnetic polarization. In the paramagnetic phase, time reversal symmetry is statistically preserved, and transport properties are similar to the clean case. At variance, in the antiferromagnetic phase, the system undergoes a transition between a superdiffusive to a subdiffusive spreading of a wave packet, signaling the development of localized states. This critical regime is characterized by the appearance of electronic states with a multifractal geometry near the gap. The local density of states concentrates in large patches having a definite charge-spin correlation. In this state, the conductivity tends to half the minimum conductivity of clean graphene. In this work, we analyze the phononic characteristics of wave motion in precompressed monoatomic and diatomic granular chains, with emphasis on the evolving spatial features of wave packets. A Taylor series expansion of the governing equations is considered to approximate the granular chain with the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain. Within this approximation, the envelope modulation of the first-order features of the wave profile is monitored and the characteristics of this modulation are determined by studying the evolution of one of the distinctive features of the spatial profile. A set of constants that describe the quantitative effects of nonlinearity on» the response are determined for monoatomic and diatomic chains and interpreted as invariants of quadratic nonlinearity. The universality of these invariants is verified by constructing inverse problems to estimate the contact power law from the wave response of granular chains with arbitrary nonlinear force interaction. The imposed power law is recovered exactly from numerical simulations for a number of considered scenarios, paving the way for inverse characterization of nonlinearity from experimental data. We study the dynamical localization transition in a one-dimensional periodically kicked incommensurate lattice, which is created by perturbing a primary optical lattice periodically with a pulsed weaker incommensurate lattice. The diffusion of wave packets in the pulsed optical lattice exhibits either extended or localized behaviors, which can be well characterized by the mean-square displacement and the spatial correlation function. We show that the dynamical localization transition is relevant to both the strength of incommensurate potential and the kicked period, and the transition point can be revealed by the information entropy of eigenfunctions of the Floquet propagator. Rotational wave packets of the weakly bound C2H2-He complex have been created using impulsive alignment. The coherent rotational dynamics were monitored for 600 ps enabling extraction of a frequency spectrum showing multiple rotational energy levels up to J=4. spectrum has been combined with ab initio calculations to show that the complex has a highly delocalized structure and is bound only by ca. 7 cm-1. The experiments demonstrate how highly featured rotational spectra can be obtained from an extremely cold environment where only the lowest rotational energy states are initially populated. We show that a returning electron wave packet in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) with midinfrared laser pulses converges to a universal limit for a laser wavelength above about 3 μm. The results are consistent among the different methods: a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, the strong-field approximation, and the quantum orbits theory. We further analyze how the contribution from different electron "trajectories" survives the macroscopic propagation in the medium. Electron supercollimation, in which a wave packet is guided to move undistorted along a selected direction, is a highly desirable property that has yet to be realized experimentally. Disorder in general is expected to inhibit supercollimation. Here we report a counterintuitive phenomenon of electron supercollimation by disorder in graphene and related Dirac fermion materials. We show that one can use one-dimensional disorder potentials to control electron wave packet transport. This is distinct from known systems where an electron wave packet would be further spread by disorder and hindered in the potential fluctuating direction. Laser-induced tunnel ionization from a coherent superposition of electronic states in Ar+ is studied in a kinematically complete experiment. Within a pump-probe scheme a spin-orbit wave packet is launched through the first ionization step from the neutral species. The multielectron coherent wave packet is probed as a function of time by the second pulse which ionizes the system to Ar++. By measuring delay-dependent electron momentum distributions we directly image the evolution of the nonstationary multielectron wave function. We present a detailed experimental investigation which uncovers the nature of light bullets generated from self-focusing in a bulk dielectric medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. By high dynamic range measurements of three-dimensional intensity profiles, we demonstrate that the light bullets consist of a sharply localized high-intensity core, which carries the self-compressed pulse and contains approximately 25% of the total energy, and a ring-shaped spatiotemporal periphery. Subdiffractive propagation along with dispersive broadening of the light bullets in free space after they exit the nonlinear medium indicate a strong space-time coupling within the bullet. This finding is confirmed by measurements of a spatiotemporal energy density flux that exhibits the same features as a stationary, polychromatic Bessel beam, thus highlighting the nature of the light bullets. Double ionization of neon with orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser fields is investigated using coincidence momentum imaging. We show that the two-electron emission dynamics in nonsequential double ionization can be controlled by tuning the subcycle shape of the electric field of the OTC pulses. We demonstrate experimentally switching from correlated to anticorrelated two-electron emission, and control over the directionality of the two-electron emission. Simulations based on a semiclassical trajectory model qualitatively explain the experimental results by a subcycle dependence of the electron recollision time on the OTC field shape. We report a random delayed-choice quantum eraser experiment. In a Young's double-slit interferometer, the which-slit information is learned from the photon-number fluctuation correlation of thermal light. The reappeared interference indicates that the which-slit information of a photon, or wave packet, can be "erased" by a second photon or wave packet, even after the annihilation of the first. Different from an entangled photon pair, the jointly measured two photons, or wave packets, are just two randomly distributed and randomly created photons of a thermal source that fall into the coincidence time window. We show, by computation and experiment, that a sequence of nonresonant and impulsive laser pulses with different ellipticities can effectively align asymmetric top molecules in three dimensions under field-free conditions. By solving the Schrödinger equation for the evolution of the rotational wave packet, we show that the 3D alignment of 3,5 difluoroiodobenzene molecules improves with each successive pulse. Experimentally, a sequence of three pulses is used to demonstrate these results, which extend the multipulse schemes used for ID alignment to full 3D control of rotational motion. We derive the field correction to the Berry curvature of Bloch electrons, which can be traced back to a positional shift due to the interband mixing induced by external electromagnetic fields. The resulting semiclassical dynamics is accurate to second order in the fields, in the same form as before, provided that the wave packet energy is derived up to the same order. We extend orthogonal optical coding, previously applied to multiuser classical communication networks, to entangled photons. Using a pulse shaper and sum-frequency generation for ultrafast coincidence detection, we demonstrate encoding and decoding of biphoton wave packets. Applying one code to the signal photon spreads the wave packet in time and creates a null at zero delay; filtering the idler with the matched code recovers a narrow correlation peak, whereas applying any other code leaves the wave packet spread. Extremely fast rotating molecules whose rotational energy is comparable with the molecular bond strength are known as "superrotors." It has been speculated that superrotors may exhibit a number of unique properties, yet only indirect evidence of these molecular objects has been reported to date. Here we demonstrate the first direct observation of molecular superrotors by detecting coherent unidirectional molecular rotation with extreme frequencies exceeding 10 THz. The technique of an "optical centrifuge" is used to control the degree of rotational excitation in an ultrabroad range of rotational quantum numbers, reaching as high as N = 95 in oxygen and N = 60 in nitrogen. State-resolved detection enables us to determine the shape of the excited rotational wave packet and quantify the effect of centrifugal distortion on the rotational spectrum. Femtosecond time resolution reveals coherent rotational dynamics with increasing coherence times at higher angular momentum. We demonstrate that molecular superrotors can be created and observed in dense samples under normal conditions where the effects of ultrafast rotation on many-body interactions, intermolecular collisions, and chemical reactions can be readily explored. We present a theoretical study of the spin dynamics of a single electron confined in a quantum dot. Spin dynamics is induced by the interplay of electrical driving and the presence of a spatially disordered magnetic field, the latter being transverse to a homogeneous magnetic field. We focus on the case of strong driving, i.e., when the oscillation amplitude A of the electron's wave packet is comparable to the quantum dot length L. We show that electrically driven spin resonance can be induced in this system by subharmonic driving, i.e., if the excitation frequency is an integer fraction (½, 1/3, etc.) of the Larmor frequency. At strong driving we find that (i) the Rabi frequencies at the subharmonic resonances are comparable to the Rabi frequency at the fundamental resonance, and (ii) at each subharmonic resonance, the Rabi frequency can be maximized by setting the drive strength to an optimal, finite value. In the context of practical quantum information processing, these findings highlight the availability of subharmonic resonances for qubit control with effectivity close to that of the fundamental resonance, and the possibility that increasing the drive strength might lead to a decreasing qubit-flip speed. Rogue waves in fluid dynamics and optical waveguides are unexpectedly large displacements from a background state, and occur in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with positive linear dispersion in the regime of positive cubic nonlinearity. Rogue waves of a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation are calculated in this work as a long-wave limit of a breather (a pulsating mode), and can occur in the regime of negative cubic nonlinearity if a sufficiently strong self-steepening nonlinearity is also present. This critical magnitude is shown to be precisely the threshold for the onset of modulation instabilities of the background plane wave, providing a strong piece of evidence regarding the connection between a rogue wave and modulation instability. The maximum amplitude of the rogue wave is three times that of the background plane wave, a result identical to that of the Peregrine breather in the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation model. This amplification ratio and the resulting spectral broadening arising from modulation instability correlate with recent experimental results of water waves. We investigate the time evolution of wave packets in systems with a mixed phase space where regular islands and chaotic motion coexist. For wave packets started in the chaotic sea on average the weight on a quantized torus of the regular island increases due to dynamical tunneling. This flooding weight initially increases linearly and saturates to a value which varies from torus to torus. We demonstrate for the asymptotic flooding weight universal scaling with an effective tunneling coupling for quantum maps and the mushroom billiard. A series of experiments is performed to examine the arrival of a pulse peak, using a Gaussian-shaped temporal wave packet as the input pulse and truncating it at various positions on or before the peak of the packet. When the truncating point is within the negative group delay limit of the fast light medium, a smooth Gaussian peak is observed at the exit port, despite the absence of an input pulse peak. The experimental results explicitly demonstrate that the superluminal propagation of a smooth Gaussian-shaped pulse peak is an analytic continuation over time of the earlier portion of the input pulse envelope. To investigate the physical meaning of the pulse peak further, we also examine the propagation of triangular-shaped pulses, for which the pulse peak can be recognized as a nonanalytical point.
