Localized acoustic surface waves supported by a "soft" elastic plate in water are explored. Unlike many materials, such as aluminum, for soft interfaces the Scholte wave, a localized interface wave, has a speed well below that of sound in water, and the energy of the Scholte wave is no longer mainly localized to the water. We note that the Scholte velocity is largely independent of Poisson's ratio in the solid, and rather than the bulk speeds of sound, the ratio between the Young's modulus and the density of the solid may better indicate whether an interface is soft. The behavior of the coupled Scholte modes along a thin plate with soft interfaces are investigated. It is demonstrated, and experimentally verified using acrylic plates underwater, that for soft interfaces, the symmetric coupled Scholte mode exhibits dispersive behavior, and deviates from the Scholte and the fluid velocities at low frequencies.

We explore the slit-width dependence of the resonant transmission of sound in air through both a slit array formed of aluminum slats and a single open-ended slit cavity in an aluminum plate. Our experimental results accord well with Lord Rayleigh's theory concerning how thin viscous and thermal boundary layers at a slit's walls affect the acoustic wave across the whole slit cavity. By measuring accurately the frequencies of the Fabry-Perot-like cavity resonances, we find a significant 5% reduction in the effective speed of sound through the slits when an individual viscous boundary layer occupies only 5% of the total slit width. Importantly, this effect is true for any airborne slit cavity, with the reduction being achieved despite the slit width being on a far larger scale than an individual boundary layer's thickness. This work demonstrates that the recent prevalent loss-free treatment of narrow slit cavities within acoustic metamaterials is unrealistic.

Conventional nematic liquid crystal cells are fabricated with small surface pretilt of the director induced by rubbed polymer alignment. Depending on the orientation of the bounding surfaces, this may lead to two slightly different untwisted director configurations, splay and parallel. This small difference leads to remarkably different director profiles during pressure-driven flow, observed here using optical conoscopy. Data show excellent agreement with numerical modeling from Leslie-Ericksen-Parodi theory.

The alignment properties and distribution of flow speed during Poiseuille flow through a microchannel of a nematic liquid crystal in a cell with homeotropic surface alignment has been measured using a combination of conoscopy, fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy, and time-lapse imaging. Two topologically distinct director profiles, with associated fluid velocity fields, are found to exist with the preferred state dictated by the volumetric flow rate of the liquid crystal. The results show excellent agreement with model data produced using the Ericksen-Leslie nematodynamics theory.

It has recently been shown that the structured surface of a perfect conductor can support surface-plasmon-like modes [Pendry, Science 305, 847 (2004)10.1126/science.1098999]. Such structures have a thickness of at least the order of the wavelength. Here, using microwave wavelength radiation incident beyond the critical angle of a wax prism, we quantify the surface-plasmon-like dispersion for a metamaterial surface with a thickness very much smaller than the incident wavelength.

The effects of in-plane electric fields on the director structure of cholesteric liquid crystals has been imaged in three dimensions using fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. The results show that a liquid crystal lying outside the electrode gap can be significantly affected by stray fields occurring above the electrode surface, resulting in a 90 degrees rotation of the cholesteric helix. Distinct differences between the behavior of cholesterics with positive and negative dielectric anisotropies are observed.

Diffraction gratings are elementary tools for much of optics and spectroscopy. Here, at microwave frequencies, we provide a new perspective on these fundamental structures. A transmission diffraction grating is presented that has diffracted beams emanating from one surface only. It can thus function either as a transmission grating with no reflected orders (other than zero) or, in the reverse configuration, as a partially transmitting structure with diffracted orders in reflection only.

The classical "brick wall," which may, according to quantum mechanics, leak via tunneling, is here shown to be completely transparent when appropriate impedance matching media are placed both in front of and behind the "wall." Optical experiments involving beyond-critical-angle-tunnel barriers in the frustrated total internal reflection scheme which mimic quantum mechanical systems provide convincing proof of this remarkable effect. The same mechanism also allows vastly enhanced transmission through unstructured thin metal films without the need for surface wave excitation.

We consider a semi-infinite nematic in contact with a periodic patterned surface with alternate planar and homeotropic stripes. Extending the work of Barbero, we find the free energy (assuming K1 = K3) for the situations where the easy direction on the planar stripe is either perpendicular or parallel to the length of the stripes. We find the bulk free energy difference between the structures to be proportional to square root(K2/K1) and so we consider the possibility of a spontaneous transition between the two states if the azimuthal anchoring energy is sufficiently weak and K1 not equal K2. We compute the critical azimuthal anchoring energy for such a transition in terms of the relative width of the stripes and the period of the pattern and find it to be approximately 10(-6) J m(-2), comparable to experimental values.

An array of subwavelength slits in a metallic substrate supports a series of Fabry-Perot-like resonances, where each harmonic results in a transmission peak. Addition of extra slits per period yields a compound grating with a structure factor associated with the basis. In this study each repeat period is comprised of a central slit flanked by a pair of narrower slits. It supports three resonances for every Fabry-Perot-like solution. New and useful insight into this phenomenon is gained by describing each of the modes in terms of the band structure of diffractively coupled surface waves.

Since the work of Ebbesen et al. [Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998)], there has been immense interest in the optical properties of subwavelength holes in metal layers. While the enhanced transmission observed is generally associated with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), theoretical predictions suggest a similar response with perfectly conducting materials. However, Pendry et al. [Science 305, 847 (2004)] proposed that, if textured on a subwavelength scale, even perfect conductors support surface modes. Here, using microwave radiation incident upon an array of metal waveguides, we observe peaks in the transmissivity below cutoff and confirm the crucial role of these SPP-like modes in the mechanism responsible.

The dynamic response of a chiral dual-frequency hybrid aligned nematic liquid-crystal cell to a multiple frequency pulse has been characterized using a time-resolved fully leaky guided-mode optical characterization technique. On application of a low-frequency voltage the cell is found to switch to homeotropic alignment, effectively destroying the inherent twist in the cell. When this voltage is immediately followed by a high-frequency voltage the structure is driven into a homogeneously aligned twisted structure. Analysis of the response of the director to this change in effective dielectric anisotropy of the material reveals a form of backflow. This arises due to the combination of the coupling between the rotation and flow of the director, the constraining effect of the pitch on the twist in the cell, and the driving of the director into homogeneous alignment. The measured director profiles have been compared to model profiles generated using the Leslie-Eriksen-Parodi nematodynamics theory, and the viscosity coefficients for the material have been determined.

A slit in a thick metal plate that is extremely subwavelength will not transmit microwaves polarized parallel to it. It is shown here that cuts perpendicular to the slit allow parallel polarized radiation to resonantly transmit. Furthermore, a zero-order mode may be excited within the slit, the frequency of which, to first order, is independent of the plate depth. Remarkably, for this novel type of resonance, the field in the slit oscillates with a constant phase and little amplitude variation throughout the plate depth, while the resonant wavelength tends to infinity as the slit width approaches zero.

The resonant transmission of a small annular aperture, with a diameter much smaller than the radiation wavelength, in a thin metal plate is studied at microwave frequencies. It transpires that such an annular aperture supports several resonant guided modes, including those that are not quantized in the azimuthal direction. Such modes have resonant frequencies that are largely independent of the diameter of the annular aperture, thus being supported by annular apertures that tend to zero radius. The transmittance of such a structure at microwave frequencies is detailed and compared with the predictions of a finite element method model.

Microstructured metallic devices will play a vital role in the continuing search to manipulate the passage of electromagnetic radiation relevant to optical, microwave, and communication technologies. Here, we investigate the electromagnetic response of a completely novel and ultrathin (<< wavelength) structure within which is buried a metal-clad waveguiding layer ("core") of subwavelength width. By removing metal from the core cladding to form a periodic array of slits, radiation is coupled into a standing wave within the layer and the structure resonantly absorbs or transmits radiation of wavelength more than 100 times its thickness. Additionally, such structures display the truly remarkable capability of compressing half of the standing-wave wavelength into a fraction of the expected distance.

Fabry-Perot-like resonant transmission of microwave radiation through a single subwavelength slit in a thick aluminum plate is quantified for a range of slit widths. Surprisingly, and in contrast to previous studies [e.g., Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5601 (2001)]], the resonant frequency exhibits a maximum as a function of slit width, decreasing as the slit width is reduced to less than 2% of the incident wavelength. This result accords with a new model based on coupled surface plasmon theory taking into account the finite conductivity, and hence permittivity, of the metal. This is contrary to a common assumption that metals can be treated as infinitely conducting in this regime.

A hybrid-aligned cell of the smectic A liquid material 8CB gives two stable director configurations, one of which is periodic and gives strong diffraction of light. This photonic lattice director profile arises from "frustration" caused by conflicting constraints imposed by the boundary conditions and the constant amplitude smectic density wave. A model is proposed which accords well with the experiment results, predicting correctly the dependence of the periodicity on the cell thickness and reproducing optical polarization microscopy results.

An optical convergent-beam guided-wave technique is used to explore in detail the dynamic flow effects in a twisted nematic cell. During switch-on it is found that the dynamic flow compresses the director twist to regions close to the cell walls. For high fields this twist compression takes the cell far beyond the Mauguin limit and it no longer effectively guides the polarization of the light through the cell. This results in a very fast switch to a transient dark state.

Strong resonant transmission of microwave radiation through a very narrow (much less than the radiation wavelength) metallic slit is recorded. The results show that a set of resonant self-coupled surface plasmons are excited within the small gap, giving a Fabry-Pérot-like behavior in accord with analytical results published earlier [Y. Takakura, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5601 (2001)]. The metallic slit, formed by two thick metal plates spaced apart by tens of microns, is inserted in a wavelength-sized aperture. On resonance the transmissivity through the metal slit is more than 2 orders of magnitude greater than the radiation impinging on the slit area.

Optical guided mode observations of the transient director profile (optical tensor distribution) during the relaxation of a 90 degrees twisted nematic cell directly reveals backflow. In the first 6 ms of the relaxation process, after a voltage across the cell is removed, the midplane tilt of the director increases, reaching a maximum value of 101 degrees at 1.4 ms. This increase in midplane tilt is attributed to coupling between fluid flow (backflow) and director reorientation. A 270 degrees twisted state of the opposite handedness to the 90 degrees twisted state found at equilibrium is shown to exist during the backflow period. Good fits of theoretical models with experimentally determined time dependent director profiles yield the viscosity coefficients.

We present an optical study of the influence of both the flexoelectric effect and surface polarization on a hybrid-aligned nematic cell using the half-leaky guided mode technique. Tilt angle profiles, obtained from fits of experimental data (reflectivity curves) taken under applied voltages, are compared with the ones derived by a complete theoretical model. Measurements with an applied alternating voltage allow the evaluation of the anchoring energy by solving the torque balance equation at the planar surface. From measurements with static fields, the sum of flexoelectric coefficients and the surface polarization are determined by numerical solution of Euler-Lagrange equations.

Twisted homogeneously planar-aligned nematic liquid-crystal cells are cooled into the smectic- A phase. The expected defective structure does not form. Instead the cells still show good optical-guiding characteristics. Exploration of the cells using a half-leaky guided-mode arrangement reveals that the liquid-crystal phase separates into three or more regions. Adjacent to both the upper and lower boundaries is a region of highly twisted nematic liquid crystal. In the center of the cell is one or more homogeneous smectic- A regions with smectic layers normal to the cell surfaces, separated by twisted nematic. As the cell is cooled so the smectic- A regions grow in thickness with the nematic regions progressively thinning but with increased twist gradient. A theoretical model of these novel results is presented.

X-ray scattering together with optical characterization using fully leaky guided modes have been used for the first time to study the same ferroelectric liquid-crystal cell. This enables direct calculation of an accurate cone and chevron description of the liquid-crystal director profile since the layer structure and optic tensor configuration are both well known.
