Here we show that a twisted graphene trilayer made by misoriented stacking of a graphene monolayer on top of a Bernal graphene bilayer can exhibit rich and tailored electronic properties. For the case that the graphene monolayer and bilayer are strongly coupled, both the massless Dirac fermions and massive chiral fermions coexist in the twisted trilayer, leading to unique in-plane chiral tunneling. For a weak coupling between the two graphene systems, the distinct chiralities and pseudospin textures of quasiparticles in monolayer and bilayer enable vertical valley-polarized quantum tunneling between them. Intriguingly, the polarity of the valley polarization can be inverted simply by either controlling the rotational angles between the two systems or tuning the Fermi levels of the two systems. Our result implies that layered van der Waals structures assembled from individual atomic planes can create materials that harbor unusual properties and alternative functionalities depending on the stacking configuration of the crystalline layers. A pseudomagnetic field becomes an experimental reality after the observation of zero-field Landau level-like quantization in strained graphene, but it is not expected that the time-reversal symmetric pseudomagnetic fields will have any effect on the spin degree of freedom of the charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) could act as a bridge between the pseudomagnetic field and spin. In quantum spin Hall (QSH) states, the direction of the spin of edge states is tied to their direction of motion because of the SOC. The pseudomagnetic field affects the clockwise and counterclockwise edge currents of the QSH states and consequently lifts the degenerate edge states of opposite spin orientation. Because of opposite signs of the pseudomagnetic field in two valleys of graphene, the one-dimensional charge carriers at the two opposite edges have different group velocities, and in some special cases, the edge states can only propagate at one edge of the nanoribbon, and the group velocity at the other edge becomes zero. Magnetism in topological insulators (TIs) opens a topologically nontrivial exchange band gap, providing an exciting platform for manipulating the topological order through an external magnetic field. Here, we show that the surface of an antiferromagnetic thin film can magnetize the top and the bottom TI surface states through interfacial couplings. During the magnetization reversal, intermediate spin configurations are ascribed from unsynchronized magnetic switchings. This unsynchronized switching develops antisymmetric magnetoresistance spikes during magnetization reversals, which might originate from a series of topological transitions. With the high Néel ordering temperature provided by the antiferromagnetic layers, the signature of the induced topological transition persists up to ~90 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The perfect transmission in a graphene monolayer and the perfect reflection in a Bernal graphene bilayer for electrons incident in the normal direction of a potential barrier are viewed as two incarnations of the Klein paradox. Here we show a new and unique incarnation of the Klein paradox. Owing to the different chiralities of the quasiparticles involved, the chiral fermions in a twisted graphene bilayer show an adjustable probability of chiral tunneling for normal incidence: they can be changed from perfect tunneling to partial or perfect reflection, or vice versa, by controlling either the height of the barrier or the incident energy. As well as addressing basic physics about how the chiral fermions with different chiralities tunnel through a barrier, our results provide a facile route to tune the electronic properties of the twisted graphene bilayer. We consider the electronic structure of a slightly twisted graphene bilayer and show the coexistence of van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlattice Dirac points in a continuum approximation. The graphene-on-graphene moiré pattern gives rise to a periodic electronic potential, which leads to the emergence of the superlattice Dirac points due to the chiral nature of the charge carriers. Because of the distinguishing real and reciprocal structures, the sublattice exchange even and sublattice exchange odd structures of the twisted graphene bilayer result in two different structures of the superlattice Dirac points. We calculate the effect of a strain on the low-energy electronic structure of the twisted graphene bilayer and demonstrate that the strain affects the position of the VHSs dramatically. Recent studies show that the electronic structures of graphene can be modified by strain, and it was predicted that strain in graphene can induce peaks in the local density of states (LDOS), mimicking Landau levels (LLs) generated in the presence of a large magnetic field. Here we report the scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) observation of nine strain-induced peaks in LDOS at 77 K along a graphene ridge created when the graphene layer was cleaved from a sample of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The energies of these peaks follow the progression of LLs of massless "Dirac fermions" (DFs) in a magnetic field of 230 T The results presented here suggest a possible route to realize zero-field quantum Hall-like effects at 77 K. Chiral quasiparticles in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene have valley-contrasting Berry phases of ±2π. This nontrivial topological structure, associated with the pseudospin winding along a closed Fermi surface, is responsible for various novel electronic properties. Here we show that the quantum interference due to intervalley scattering induced by single-atom vacancies or impurities provides insights into the topological nature of the bilayer graphene. The scattered chiral quasiparticles between distinct valleys with opposite chirality undergo a rotation of pseudospin that results in the Friedel oscillation with wavefront dislocations. The number of dislocations reflects the information about pseudospin texture and hence can be used to measure the Berry phase. As demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically, the Friedel oscillation, depending on the single-atom vacancy or impurity at different sublattices, can exhibit N=4, 2, or 0 additional wavefronts, characterizing the 2π Berry phase of the bilayer graphene. Our results provide a comprehensive study of the intervalley quantum interference in bilayer graphene and can be extended to multilayer graphene, shedding light on the pseudospin physics. In strained graphene, lattice deformation can create pseudomagnetic fields affecting the behavior of massless Dirac fermions and result in zero-field Landau level-like quantization. In the presence of an external magnetic field, valley-polarized Landau levels are predicted to be observed because the strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields are of opposite directions in the K and K' valleys of graphene. However, an experimental verification of such a unique valley-polarized Landau quantization has not been reported so far. Here, we present experimental spectroscopic measurements in strained graphene on Rh foil by scanning tunneling microscopy. We directly observed the splitting of the Landau level in the quantum Hall regime and we interpreted the experimental result as the valley-polarized Landau level induced by the coexistence of the pseudomagnetic fields and external magnetic fields. The observed result paves the way to exploit novel electronic properties in graphene through the combination of the spatially varying strain (or the pseudomagnetic fields) and the external magnetic fields. Currently there is a lively discussion concerning Fermi velocity renormalization in twisted bilayers and several contradicted experimental results are reported. Here we study electronic structures of the twisted bilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The interlayer coupling strengths between the adjacent bilayers are measured according to energy separations of two pronounced low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the STS spectra. We demonstrate that there is a large range of values for the interlayer interaction in different twisted bilayers. Below the VHSs, the observed Landau quantization in the twisted bilayers is identical to that of massless Dirac fermions in graphene monolayer, which allows us to measure the Fermi velocity directly. Our result indicates that the Fermi velocity of the twisted bilayers depends remarkably on both the twisted angles and the interlayer coupling strengths. This removes the discrepancy about the Fermi velocity renormalization in the twisted bilayers and provides a consistent interpretation of all current data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electron-hole symmetry in graphene monolayer, which is analogous to the inherent symmetric structure between electrons and positrons of the Universe, plays a crucial role in the chirality and chiral tunneling of massless Dirac fermions. Here we demonstrate that both strain and charged-defect scattering could break this symmetry dramatically in a graphene monolayer. In our experiment, the Fermi velocities of electrons veF and holes vhF are measured directly through Landau level spectroscopy. In strained graphene with lattice deformation and curvature, the veF and vhF are measured as (1.21 ± 0.03) × 106 m/s and (1.02 ± 0.03) × 106 m/s, respectively. This giant asymmetry originates from enhanced next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the strained region. Around positively charged defect, we observe opposite electron-hole asymmetry, and the veF and vhF are measured to be (0.86 ± 0.02) × 106 m/s and (1.14 ± 0.03) × 106 m/s, respectively. Such a large asymmetry is attributed to the fact that the massless Dirac fermions in a graphene monolayer are scattered more strongly when they are attracted to the charged defect than when they are repelled from it. The interfacial atomic arrangement, which is different from that in the bulk form of the heterojunction, can induce a reconstruction of electrostatic field at the interface. For conventional semiconductor heterointerfaces, it is known that such reconstruction results in band bending, creating a quantum well in which the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is formed. In this article, we show that this mechanism still works in a multivalent oxide heterojunction: for (110) LaA1O3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterojunctions, the coexistence of La and Ti in ABO3 perovskite unit cells at the interface reduces the valence of Ti, generating a local field leading to band bending in the interfacial STO layers. The extra free electrons are trapped in this bent conduction band forming a 2DEG. It unifies two independent mechanisms for 2DEG at LAO/STO interfaces, the "polar catastrophe" model and the "La1-xSrxTiO3" layers model, and is expected to end the decade-old controversy. Non-Abelian gauge potentials are quite relevant in subatomic physics, but they are relatively rare in a condensed matter context. Here we report the experimental evidence for non-Abelian gauge potentials in twisted graphene bilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. At a magic twisted angle, θ ≈ (1.11 ± 0.05)°, a pronounced sharp peak, which arises from the nondispersive flat bands at the charge neutrality point, is observed in the tunneling density of states due to the action of the non-Abelian gauge fields. Moreover, we observe confined electronic states in the twisted bilayer, as manifested by regularly spaced tunneling peaks with energy spacing δE ≈ νF/D ≈ 70 meV (here νF is the Fermi velocity of graphene and D is the period of the moir'e patterns). This indicates that the non-Abelian gauge potentials in twisted graphene bilayers confine low-energy electrons into a triangular array of quantum dots following the modulation of the moiré patterns. Our results also directly demonstrate that the Fermi velocity in twisted bilayers can be tuned from about 106 m/s to zero by simply reducing the twisted angle of about 2°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electronic properties of surface areas decoupled from graphite are studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We show that it is possible to identify the decoupled graphene monolayer, the Bernal bilayer, and the Bernal trilayer on a graphite substrate according to their tunneling spectra in a high magnetic field. The decoupled monolayer and bilayer exhibit Landau quantization of massless and massive Dirac fermions, respectively. The substrate generates a sizable band gap ~35 meV in the Bernal bilayer, therefore, the eightfold degenerate Landau level at the charge neutrality point is split into two valley-polarized quartets polarized on each layer. In the decoupled Bernal trilayer, we find that both massless and massive Dirac fermions coexist and its low-energy band structure can be described quite well by taking into account only the nearest-neighbor intra- and interlayer hopping parameters. A strong correlation between the Fermi velocity of the massless Dirac fermions and the effective mass of the massive Dirac fermions is observed in the graphene trilayer. Recently, rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG) has attracted much attention because of its low-energy flat bands, which are predicted to result in many strongly correlated phenomena. However, there has been a need for more experimental evidence for these flat bands in the r-TLG, since the supporting substrates usually have strong destructive effects on the low-energy band structure of graphene systems. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to directly probe the stacking order and electronic spectrum of the r-TLG on a graphite surface with scanning tunneling microscopy around a monoatomic step edge of the top graphene layer. The tunneling spectra of the r-TLG exhibit four adjacent peaks, which are generated by the low-energy flat bands, flanking the charge neutrality point. Based on these spectra, the true energy gap and the energy gap at the K point of the r-TLG are determined as about 9 and 23 meV, respectively. Very recently, it was demonstrated that the carrier mobility of a molecular monolayer dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) on boron nitride can reach 10cm2/Vs, the highest among the previously reported monolayer molecular field-effect transistors. Here we show that the high-quality single crystal of the C8-BTBT monolayer may be the key origin of the record-high carrier mobility. We discover that the C8-BTBT molecules prefer layer-by-layer growth on both hexagonal boron nitride and graphene. The flatness of these substrates substantially decreases the C8-BTBT nucleation density and enables repeatable growth of large-area single crystal of the C8-BTBT monolayer. Our experimental result indicates that only out-of-plane roughness greater than 0.6 nm of the substrates could induce disturbance in the crystal growth and consequently affect the charge transport. Carrier density (ns) is a crucial parameter that governs the properties of correlated oxides, so the field-effect approach is an ideal tool to investigate the novel physics of the system. Here, the carrier-mediated transport of slightly doped anatase TiO2 epitaxial films were studied by electric double layer transistor (EDLT) gating. The ns has been increased hugely, and concomitantly, the channels of anatase TiO2 films undergo an insulator-metal transition with a decrease in resistivity by almost three orders of magnitude. More fascinating, the Kondo effect depends very strongly on ns, and the Hall mobility could be enhanced about one order of magnitude with increasing ns. The creation of van der Waals heterostructures based on a graphene monolayer and other two-dimensional crystals has attracted great interest because the atomic registry of the two-dimensional crystals can modify the electronic spectra and properties of graphene. A twisted graphene bilayer can be viewed as a special van der Waals structure composed of two mutually misoriented graphene layers, where the sublayer graphene not only plays the role of a substrate, but also acts in an equivalent role as the top graphene layer in the structure. Here we report the electronic spectra of slightly twisted graphene bilayers studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Our experiment demonstrates that twist-induced van Hove singularities are ubiquitously present for rotation angles θ of less than about 3.5∘ , corresponding to moiré -pattern periods D longer than 4 nm. However, they totally vanish for θ>5.5 ∘ (D < 2.5 nm). Such a behavior indicates that the continuum models, which capture moiré-pattern periodicity more accurately at small rotation angles, are no longer applicable at large rotation angles. In previous studies, it has proved difficult to realize periodic graphene ripples with wavelengths of a few nanometers. Here we show that one-dimensional (ID) periodic graphene ripples with wavelengths from 2 nm to tens of nanometers can be implemented in the intrinsic areas of a continuous mosaic (locally N-doped) graphene monolayer by simultaneously using both the thermal strain engineering and the anisotropic surface stress of the Cu substrate. Our result indicates that the constraint imposed at the boundaries between the intrinsic and the N-doped regions play a vital role in creating these ID ripples. We also demonstrate that the observed rippling modes are beyond the descriptions of continuum mechanics due to the decoupling of graphene's bending and tensional deformations. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements indicate that the nanorippling generates a periodic electronic superlattice and opens a zeroenergy gap of about 130 meV in graphene. Despite the fact that structures and properties of tilt grain boundaries of graphite surface and graphene have been extensively studied, their effect on the structures and electronic spectra of graphene layers has not been fully addressed. Here we study effects of one-dimensional tilt grain boundaries on structures and electronic spectra of graphene multilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A tilt grain boundary of a top graphene sheet in graphene multilayers leads to a twist between consecutive layers and generates superstructures (Moiré patterns) on one side of the boundary. Our results demonstrate that the twisting changes the electronic spectra of Bernal graphene bilayer and graphene trilayers dramatically. We also study quantum-confined twisted graphene bilayer generated between two adjacent tilt grain boundaries and find that the band structure of such a system is still valid even when the number of superstructures is reduced to two in one direction. It is well established that some kinds of lattice deformations in graphene monolayer, which change electron hopping in the sublattice and affect in-plane motion of electrons, may induce out-of-plane pseudomagnetic fields as large as 100 T. Here, we demonstrate that stacking misorientation in graphene bilayers mimics the effect of huge in-plane pseudomagnetic fields greater than 1000 T on the interlayer hopping of electrons. As well as addressing the similarity between the effect of in-plane pseudomagnetic fields and the twisting on the electronic band structure of the Bernal graphene bilayer, we point out that the in-plane magnetic fields (or twisting) could modify the low-energy pseudospin texture of the graphene bilayer (the pseudospin winding number is reduced from 2 to 1), thereby changing the chiralities of quasiparticles from those of spin 1 to those of spin 1/2. Physical properties of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdWs) structures depend sensitively on both stacking orders and interlayer interactions. Yet, in most cases studied to date, the interlayer interaction is considered to be a "static" property of the vdWs structures. Here we demonstrate that applying a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip pulse on twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) can induce sub-Ångstrom fluctuations of the interlayer separation in the TBG, which are equivalent to dynamic vertical external pressure of about 10 GPa on the TBG. The sub-Ångstrom fluctuations of the interlayer separation result in large oscillations of the energy separations between two van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the TBG. The period of the oscillations of the VHSs spacing is extremely long, about 500-1000 sec, attributing to tip-induced local stress in the atomic-thick TBG. Theoretical research has predicted that a ripple of graphene generates an effective gauge field on its low-energy electronic structure and could lead to Landau quantization. Here, we demonstrate using a combination of an experimental method (scanning tunneling microscopy) and a theoretical approach (tight-binding approximation) that Landau levels will form when the effective pseudomagnetic flux per ripple Φ~(h²/la)Φ0 is larger than the flux quantum Φ0 (here, h is the height, l is the width of the ripple, and a is the nearest C-C bond length). The strain-induced gauge field in the ripple only results in one-dimensional (1D) Landau-level quantization along the ripple. Such 1D Landau quantization does not exist in two-dimensional systems in an external magnetic field. Recent studies show that periodic potentials can generate superlattice Dirac points at energies ±ħvF G 2 in graphene (where ħ is the reduced Planck constant, vp is the Fermi velocity of graphene, and G is the reciprocal superlattice vector). Here, we perform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of a corrugated graphene monolayer on Rh foil. We show that the quasiperiodic ripples of nanometer wavelength in the corrugated graphene give rise to weak one-dimensional electronic potentials and thereby lead to the emergence of the superlattice Dirac points. The position of the superlattice Dirac point is space dependent and shows a wide distribution of values. We demonstrate that the space-dependent superlattice Dirac points are closely related to the space-dependent Fermi velocity, which may arise from the effect of the local strain and the strong electron-electron interaction in the corrugated graphene. Recent studies show that two low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) seen as two pronounced peaks in the density of states could be induced in a twisted graphene bilayer. Here, we report angle-dependent VHSs of a slightly twisted graphene bilayer studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We show that energy difference of the two VHSs follows ΔEvhs ~ hvFΔK between 1.0° and 3.0° [here vF ~1.l X 106 m/s is the Fermi velocity of monolayer graphene, and ΔK = 2Ksin(θ/2) is the shift between the corresponding Dirac points of the twisted graphene bilayer]. This result indicates that the rotation angle between graphene sheets does not result in a significant reduction of the Fermi velocity, which quite differs from that predicted by band structure calculations. However, around a twisted angle θ ~ 1.3°, the observed ΔEvhs ~ 0.11 eV is much smaller than the expected value hvFΔK ~ 0.28 eV at 1.3°. The origin of the reduction of ΔEvhs at 1.3° is discussed. The electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene on SiC substrate were studied via a combination of transport measurements and scanning tunneling microscopy. We report the observation of enhanced intervalley scattering from one Dirac cone to the other, which contributes to weak localization of the twisted bilayer graphene by increasing the interlayer coupling strength. Our experiment and analysis demonstrate that the enhanced intervalley scattering is closely related to the periodic AB stacked atoms (the A atom of layer 1 and the B atom of layer 2 that have the same horizontal positions) that break the sublattice degeneracy of graphene locally. We further show that these periodic AB stacked atoms affect intervalley but not intravalley scattering. Using cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy+ single-electron tunneling of Au nanoparticles (NPs) with 1.4 nm in radius was studied. We observe a gap ΔV ~ 2e/C (C is the capacitance of the Au particle and e the charge of an electron) around zero bias in the tunneling-conductancc spectrum, followed by a series of discrete single-electron tunneling peaks with peak spacing of EC ~ e/C at both negative and positive bias. Experimental data are well explained by taking into account both the shift o1 conductance peaks and the effect of exchange interaction of electrons on the single-electron tunneling of Au NPs. A conductance peak near zero bias was suppressed by the exchange-type zero-bias anomaly, which results in the gap Δ V ~ 2EC. According to our experiment and analysis, the shift of conductance peaks of Au NPs is attributed to self-biased gate and/or tip-induced gate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interplay between interlayer van der Waals interaction and intralayer lattice distortion can lead to structural reconstruction in slightly twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with the twist angle being smaller than a characteristic angle θc. Experimentally, the θc is demonstrated to be very close to the magic angle (θ≈1.08°). Here we address the transition between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures of the TBG across the magic angle by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our experiment demonstrates that both structures are stable in the TBG around the magic angle. By using a STM tip, we show that the two structures can be changed to each other and a triangular network of chiral one-dimensional states hosted by domain boundaries can be switched on and off. Consequently, the bandwidth of the flat band, which plays a vital role in the emergent strongly correlated states in the magic angle TBG, is tuned. Berry phase, the geometric phase accumulated over a closed loop in parameter space during an adiabatic cyclic evolution, has been demonstrated to play an important role in many quantum systems since its discovery. In gapped Bernal bilayer graphene, the Berry phase can be continuously tuned from zero to 2π, which offers a unique opportunity to explore the tunable Berry phase on physical phenomena. Here, we report experimental observation of Berry-phase-induced valley splitting and crossing in movable bilayer-graphene p-n junction resonators. In our experiment, the resonators are generated by combining the electric field of a scanning tunneling microscope tip with the gap of bilayer graphene. A perpendicular magnetic field changes the Berry phase of the confined bound states in the resonators from zero to 2π continuously and leads to the Berry phase difference for the two inequivalent valleys in the bilayer graphene. As a consequence, we observe giant valley splitting and unusual valley crossing of the lowest bound states. It is quite easy to control spin polarization and the spin direction of a system via magnetic fields. However, there is no such direct and efficient way to manipulate the valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to realize valley polarization and valley inversion in graphene by using both strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields. Pseudomagnetic fields, which are quite different from real magnetic fields, point in opposite directions at the two distinct valleys of graphene. Therefore, the coexistence of pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields leads to imbalanced effective magnetic fields at two distinct valleys of graphene. This allows us to control the valley in graphene as conveniently as the electron spin. In this work, we report a consistent observation of valley polarization and inversion in strained graphene via pseudo-Landau levels, splitting of real Landau levels, and valley splitting of confined states using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) was predicted to exhibit novel many-body phenomena due to the existence of almost dispersionless flat bands near the charge neutrality point. Here, using high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy, we present Landau Level (LL) spectroscopy measurements of high-quality ABC-stacked TLG on graphite. We observe an approximately linear magnetic-field scaling of valley splitting and spin splitting in the ABC-stacked TLG. Our experiment indicates that the spin splitting decreases dramatically with increasing the LL index. When the lowest LL is partially filled, we find an obvious enhancement of the spin splitting, attributing to strong many-body effects. Moreover, we observe linear energy scaling of the inverse lifetime of quasiparticles, providing an additional evidence for the strong electron-electron interactions in the ABC-stacked TLG. These results imply that interesting broken-symmetry states and novel electron correlated effects could emerge in the ABC-stacked TLG in the presence of high magnetic fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Creation of high-quality p - n junctions in graphene monolayer is vital in studying many exotic phenomena of massless Dirac fermions. However, even with the fast progress of graphene technology for more than ten years, it remains conspicuously difficult to generate nanoscale and atomically sharp p - n junctions in graphene. Here, we realized nanoscale p - n junctions with atomically sharp boundaries in graphene monolayer by using monolayer vacancy island of Cu surface. The generated sharp p - n junctions with the height as high as 660 meV isolate the graphene above the Cu monolayer vacancy island as nanoscale graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in a continuous graphene sheet. Massless Dirac fermions are confined by the p - n junctions for a finite time to form quasibound states in the GQDs. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we observe resonances of quasibound states in the GQDs with various sizes and directly visualize effects of geometries of the GQDs on the quantum interference patterns of the quasibound states, which allow us to test the quantum electron optics based on graphene in atomic scale. Twist, as a simple and unique degree of freedom, could lead to enormous novel quantum phenomena in bilayer graphene. A small rotation angle introduces low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) approaching the Fermi level, which result in unusual correlated states in the bilayer graphene. It is reasonable to expect that the twist could also affect the electronic properties of few-layer graphene dramatically. However, such an issue has remained experimentally elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically studied a twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) with two different small twist angles between adjacent layers. Two sets of VHSs, originating from the two twist angles, were observed in the TTG, indicating that the TTG could be simply regarded as a combination of two different twisted bilayers of graphene. By using high-resolution STS, we observed a split of the VHSs and directly imaged the spatial symmetry breaking of electronic states around the VHSs. By comparing the in-plane and out-of-plane orbitally dependent magnetoresistance under a magnetic field of 9 T, the conductive layer thickness of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is determined for temperatures between 45 and 300 K. As the influence of spin-orbit coupling cannot be ignored when considering the conductive layer thickness dependence at temperatures below 45 K, a lower magnetic field is employed. The results show that the thickness increases gradually and then remains constant as the temperature decreases. Such a tendency is well reproduced theoretically by considering the equilibrium between drift and diffusion of electrons near the interface. We discover that the thickness mainly depends on the relative permittivity of SrTiO 3 and electron mobility, and it is independent of the sheet carrier density. Our investigations show that the dimensionality of the confined zone for electrons can be controlled and can be used as a reference for other interfacial systems in condensed matter physics. A variety of new and interesting electronic properties have been predicted in graphene monolayer doped to Van Hove singularities (VHSs) of its density of state. However, tuning the Fermi energy to reach a VHS of graphene by either gating or chemical doping is prohibitively difficult, owing to their large energy distance (~3 eV). This difficulty can be easily overcome in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). By introducing a small twist angle between two adjacent graphene sheets, we are able to generate two low-energy VHSs arbitrarily approaching the Fermi energy. Here, we report experimental studies of electronic properties around the VHSs of a slightly TBG through scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. The split of the VHSs is observed and the spatial symmetry breaking of electronic states around the VHSs is directly visualized. Finite-size twisted bilayer graphene (TBG, where here the TBG is of nanoscale size) is quite unstable and will change its structure to a Bernal (or AB-stacking) bilayer with a much lower energy. Therefore, the lack of finite-size TBG makes its electronic properties difficult to access in experiments. In this paper, a special confined TBG is obtained in the overlaid area of two continuous misoriented graphene sheets. The width of the confined region of the TBG changes gradually from about 22 to 0 nm. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we study carefully the structure and the electronic properties of finite-size TBG. Our results indicate that the low-energy electronic properties, including twist-induced Van Hove singularities (VHSs) and spatial modulation of the local density of states, are strongly affected by the translational symmetry breaking of the finite-size TBG. However, the electronic properties above the energy of the VHSs are almost not influenced by quantum confinement even when the width of the TBG is reduced to only a single moiré spot. Considerable efforts have been made to trap massless Dirac fermions in a graphene monolayer, but only quasibound states have been realized in continuous graphene sheets up to now. Here, we demonstrate the realization of bound states in nanoscale graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in a continuous graphene sheet. The GQDs are electronically isolated from the surrounding continuous graphene sheet by circular boundaries, which are generated by strong coupling between graphene and the substrate. By using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observe single-electron charging states of the GQDs, seen as Coulomb oscillations in the tunneling conductance. The evolution of single-electron tunneling of the GQDs between the Coulomb blockade regime and the Coulomb staircase regime is observed by tuning the STM tip-sample distances. Spatial maps of the local electronic densities reveal concentric rings inside the GQDs with each ring corresponding to a single Coulomb oscillation of the tunneling spectra. Trilayer graphene (TLG) exhibits rich, alternative electronic properties and extraordinary quantum Hall phenomena owing to enhanced electronic interactions and tunable chirality of its quasiparticles. Here, we report direct observation of chirality transition of quasiparticles at stacking solitons of TLG via spatial-resolved Landau level spectroscopy. The one-dimensional stacking solitons with width of the order of 10 nm separate adjacent Bernal-stacked TLG and rhombohedral-stacked TLG. By using high-field tunneling spectra from scanning tunneling microscopy, we measured Landau quantization in both the Bernal-stacked TLG and the rhombohedral-stacked TLG and, importantly, we observed evolution of quasiparticles between the chiral degree l=1 and 2 and l=3 across the stacking domain-wall solitons. Our experiment indicates that such a chirality transition occurs smoothly, accompanying the transition of the stacking orders of TLG, around the domain-wall solitons. This result demonstrates the important relationship between the crystallographic stacking order and the chirality of quasiparticles in graphene systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pristine graphene is strongly diamagnetic. However, graphene with single carbon atom defects could exhibit paramagnetism. Theoretically, the π magnetism induced by the monovacancy in graphene is characteristic of two spin-split density-of-states (DOS) peaks close to the Dirac point. Since its prediction, many experiments have attempted to study this π magnetism in graphene, whereas only a notable resonance peak has been observed around the atomic defects, leaving the π magnetism experimentally elusive. Here, we report direct experimental evidence of π magnetism by using a scanning tunneling microscope. We demonstrate that the localized state of the atomic defects is split into two DOS peaks with energy separations of several tens of meV. Strong magnetic fields further increase the energy separations of the two spin-polarized peaks and lead to a Zeeman-like splitting. Unexpectedly, the effective g factor around the atomic defect is measured to be about 40, which is about 20 times larger than the g factor for electron spins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diverse phenomena emerge at the interface between band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, showing an opportunity for potential applications as well as contributing to fundamental research interests. Here, we report the superconductor-metal transition driven by a perpendicular magnetic field in superconducting two-dimensional electron gas formed at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface, which offers an appealing platform for quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a weakly localized metal. Interestingly, when approaching the quantum critical point, the dynamic critical exponent is not a constant but a diverging value, which is direct evidence of a quantum Griffiths singularity arising from quenched disorder at ultralow temperatures. Furthermore, the hysteretic property of magnetoresistance is observed at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface, which suggests the potential coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism. To generate a moderate band gap in a graphene monolayer is a very important but rather difficult task. A rare working solution of this problem is to cut it into one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-wide ribbons. Here we show that, instead of cutting the graphene monolayer, a wide band gap can be created in a unique 1D strained structure, i.e., a wrinkled graphene-nanoribbon-like (GNR-like) structure, of a continuous graphene sheet via strong hybridization between the graphene and the metal substrate. The wrinkled GNR-like structures with widths of only a few nanometers are observed in a continuous graphene sheet grown on a Rh foil by using thermal strain engineering. Spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy revealed a band-gap opening of a few hundred meV in the GNR-like structure in an otherwise continuous metallic graphene sheet, directly demonstrating the realization of a metallic-semiconducting-metallic junction entirely in a graphene monolayer. In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 89, 125418 (2014)], the authors argue that it is possible to map the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene to those of bilayer graphene in an in-plane magnetic field. However, their description of the low-energy dynamics of twisted bilayer graphene is restricted to the extended zone scheme and therefore neglects the effects of the superperiodic structure. If the energy spectrum is studied in the supercell Brillouin zone, we find that the comparison with an in-plane magnetic field fails because (i) the energy spectra of the two situations exhibit different symmetries and (ii) the low-energy spectra are very different. In the Comment, the authors argue that due to the different symmetry properties, the comparison between the twisting and in-plane magnetic field in bilayer graphene fails. However, we do not think it addresses the main result of our work. Here from the perspective of tunable chirality and quantum transmission signature, we review the feature shared by twisting and in-plane magnetic field in bilayer graphene and show that the Comment does not contradict our main results. Theoretically, it has been demonstrated that armchair Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) can be divided into three families, i.e., Na=3p, Na=3p+1, and Na=3p+2 (here Na is the number of dimer lines across the ribbon width and p is an integer), according to their electronic structures, and the energy gaps for the three families are quite different even with the same p. However, a systematic experimental verification of this fundamental prediction is still lacking, owing to very limited atomic-level control of the width of the armchair GNRs investigated. Here, we studied electronic structures of the armchair GNRs with atomically well-defined widths ranging from Na=6 to Na=26 by using a scanning tunneling microscope. Our result demonstrated explicitly that all the studied armchair GNRs exhibit semiconducting gaps and, more importantly, the observed gaps as a function of Na are well grouped into the three categories, as predicted by density-functional theory calculations. Such a result indicated that the electronic properties of the armchair GNRs can be tuned dramatically by simply adding or cutting one carbon dimer line along the ribbon width. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrid quantum Hall (QH) junctions have been extensively studied by transport measurements due to their exciting physics and device applications. Here we report on spatially resolving electronic properties of such a junction on the nanoscale. We present a subnanometer-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of a monolayer-bilayer graphene planar junction in the QH regime. The atomically well-defined interface of such a junction allows us to spatially resolve the interface electronic properties. Around the interface, we detect Landau quantization of massless Dirac fermions as expected in the graphene monolayer for filled states of the junction, whereas unexpectedly, only Landau quantization of massive Dirac fermions as expected in the graphene bilayer is observed for empty states. The observed unconventional interface Landau quantization arises from the fact that the quantum conductance across the interface is solely determined by the minimum filling factors (number of edge modes) in the graphene monolayer and bilayer regions of the junction. We report on microscopic measurements of the low-energy electronic structures both at the zigzag and armchair edges of bilayer graphene using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). We have found that, both in the absence and in the presence of a magnetic field, an almost zero-energy peak in the density of states was localized at the zigzag edges, as expected for the surface states at the zigzag edges of bilayer graphene. In the quantum Hall regime, we have clearly observed Landau levels bending away from the charge neutrality point near both the zigzag and armchair edges. Such a result is direct evidence for the evolution of Landau levels into quantum Hall edge states in graphene bilayers. The wave function of Dirac fermions is a two-component spinor. In graphene, a one-atom-thick film showing two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations, the two-component representation, reflects the amplitude of the electron wave function on the A and B sublattices. This unique property provides unprecedented opportunities to image the two components of Dirac fermions spatially. Here, we report atomic resolution imaging of two-component Dirac-Landau levels in gapped graphene monolayers by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap of about 20 meV, driven by inversion symmetry breaking by the substrate potential, is observed in the graphene sheets on both SiC and graphite substrates. Such a gap splits the n=0 Landau level (LL) into two levels, 0+ and 0-. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the wave function of the 0+ LL is mainly on the A sites and that of the 0- LL is mainly on the B sites of graphene, characterizing the internal structure of the spinor of the n=0 LL.
