The authors discuss the study by H. J. Zhang and colleagues on the existence of topological insulators (TIs) family in ternary compounds with honeycomb lattice. The authors argue that the honeycomb lattice is not dynamically stable for some materials including the lithium gold selenide (LiAuSe). The authors also use minima hopping method algorithm to obtain the system's low-energy phase.

Here, we introduce a miniature beamline for transient absorption and dispersion spectroscopy, using a tailored deep ultraviolet field immediately after the noncollinear generation without subsequent optical elements. We explore the near-band-gap region in diamond in the presence of a few-femtosecond pump pulse where the delayed dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect and the almost instantaneous optical Kerr effect coexist.

A major obstacle for computing optical spectra of solids is the lack of reliable approximations for capturing excitonic effects within time-dependent density functional theory. We show that the accurate prediction of strongly bound electron-hole pairs within this framework using simple approximations is still a challenge and that available promising results have to be revisited. Deriving a set of analytical formulas we analyze and explain the difficulties. We deduce an alternative approximation from an iterative scheme guided by previously available knowledge, significantly improving the description of exciton binding energies. Finally, we show how one can "read" exciton binding energies from spectra determined in the random phase approximation, without any further calculation.

Systematic ab initio structure prediction was applied for the first time to predict low energy surface reconstructions by employing the minima hopping method on the α-boron (111) surface. Novel reconstruction geometries were identified and carefully characterized in terms of structural and electronic properties. Our calculations predict the formation of a planar, monolayer sheet at the surface, which is responsible for conductive surface states. Furthermore, the isolated boron sheet is shown to be the ground state 2D structure in vacuum at a hole density of η=1/5 and is therefore a potential candidate as a precursor for boron nanostructures.

The self-consistent GW band gaps are known to be significantly overestimated. We show that this overestimation is, to a large extent, due to the neglect of the contribution of the lattice polarization to the screening of the electron-electron interaction. To solve this problem, we derive within the GW formalism a generalized plasmon-pole model that accounts for lattice polarization. The resulting GW self-energy is used to calculate the band structures of a set of binary semiconductors and insulators. The lattice contribution always decreases the band gap. The shrinkage increases with the size of the longitudinal-transverse optical splitting and it can represent more than 15% of the band gap in highly polar compounds, reducing the band-gap percentage error by a factor of 3.

Low-energy structures of alanates are currently known to be described by patterns of isolated, nearly ideal tetrahedral [AlH4] anions and metal cations. We discover that the novel polymeric motif recently proposed for LiAlH4 plays a dominant role in a series of alanates, including LiAlH4, NaAlH4, KAlH4, Mg(AlH4)2, Ca(AlH4)2, and Sr(AlH4)2. In particular, most of the low-energy structures discovered for the whole series are characterized by networks of corner-sharing [AlH6] octahedra, forming wires and/or planes throughout the materials. Finally, for Mg(AlH4)2 and Sr(AlH4)2, we identify two polymeric phases to be lowest in energy at low temperatures.

We identify a class of novel low energy phases of the hydrogen storage material LiAlH4 by using the ab initio minima hopping crystal structure prediction method. These phases are, unlike previous predictions and known structures of similar materials, characterized by polymeric networks consisting of Al atoms interlinked with H atoms. The most stable structure is a layered ionic crystal with P21/c symmetry, and it has lower free energy than the previously reported structure over a wide range of temperatures. Furthermore, we carry out x-ray diffraction, phonon, and GW band-structure analysis in order to characterize this phase. Its experimental synthesis would have profound implications for the study of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation processes and the stability problem of LiAlH4 for hydrogen storage applications.

A systematic ab initio search for low-enthalpy phases of disilane (Si2H6) at high pressures was performed based on the minima hopping method. We found a novel metallic phase of disilane with Cmcm symmetry, which is enthalpically more favorable than the recently proposed structures of disilane up to 280 GPa, but revealing compositional instability below 190 GPa. The Cmcm phase has a moderate electron-phonon coupling yielding a superconducting transition temperature T(c) of around 20 K at 100 GPa, decreasing to 13 K at 220 GPa. These values are significantly smaller than previously predicted T(c))s for disilane at equivalent pressure. This shows that similar but different crystalline structures of a material can result in dramatically different T(c)'s and stresses the need for a systematic search for a crystalline ground state.

The issue of p doping in nanostructured cagelike ZnO is investigated by state-of-the-art calculations. Our study is focused on one prototypical structure, namely, sodalite, for which we show that p-type doping is possible for elements of the V, VI, and VII columns of the periodic table. However, some dopants tend to form dimers, thus impairing the stability of this kind of doping. This difference of behavior is discussed, and two criteria are proposed to ensure stable p doping.

Through a systematic structural search we found an allotrope of carbon with Cmmm symmetry which we predict to be more stable than graphite for pressures above 10 GPa. This material, which we refer to as Z-carbon, is formed by pure sp(3) bonds and it provides an explanation to several features in experimental x-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of graphite under pressure. The transition from graphite to Z-carbon can occur through simple sliding and buckling of graphene sheets. Our calculations predict that Z-carbon is a transparent wide band-gap semiconductor with a hardness comparable to diamond.

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the superconducting phase of the layered binary silicide BaSi(2). Compared with the AlB(2) structure of graphite or diboridelike superconductors, in the hexagonal structure of binary silicides the sp(3) arrangement of silicon atoms leads to corrugated sheets. Through a high-pressure synthesis procedure we are able to modify the buckling of these sheets, enhancing the superconducting transition temperature from 6 to 8.9 K when the silicon planes flatten out. By performing ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory we explain how the electronic and phonon properties are strongly affected by changes in the buckling. This mechanism is likely present in other intercalated layered superconductors, opening the way to the tuning of superconductivity through the control of internal structural parameters., (© 2011 American Physical Society)

We use hybrid functionals and restricted self-consistent GW, state-of-the-art theoretical approaches for quasiparticle band structures, to study the electronic states of delafossite Cu(Al,In)O2, the first p-type and bipolar transparent conductive oxides. We show that a self-consistent GW approximation gives remarkably wider band gaps than all the other approaches used so far. Accounting for polaronic effects in the GW scheme we recover a very nice agreement with experiments. Furthermore, the modifications with respect to the Kohn-Sham bands are strongly k dependent, which makes questionable the common practice of using a scissor operator. Finally, our results support the view that the low energy structures found in optical experiments, and initially attributed to an indirect transition, are due to intrinsic defects in the samples.

We present a first-principles study of the electronic properties of CuIn(S,Se){2} (CIS) using state-of-the-art self-consistent GW and hybrid functionals. The calculated band gap depends strongly on the anion displacement u, an internal structural parameter that measures lattice distortion. This contrasts with the observed stability of the band gap of CIS solar panels under operating conditions, where a relatively large dispersion of values for u occurs. We solve this apparent paradox considering the coupled effect on the band gap of copper vacancies and lattice distortions. The correct treatment of d electrons in these materials requires going beyond density functional theory, and GW self-consistency is critical to evaluate the quasiparticle gap and the valence band maximum.

Several chalcogenide alloys exhibit a pronounced contrast between the optical absorption in the metastable rocksalt and in the amorphous phase. This phenomenon is the basis for their application in optical data storage. Here we present ab initio calculations of the optical properties of GeTe and Ge1Sb2Te4 in the two phases. The analysis of our computations and experimental data reveal the correlation between local structural changes and optical properties as well as the origin of the optical contrast in these materials. We find that the change in optical properties cannot be attributed to a smearing of transition energies as commonly assumed for amorphous semiconductors: the optical contrast between the two phases can only be explained by significant changes in the transition matrix elements.

The static dielectric properties of (001)(GaAs)(p)/(AlAs)(p) superlattices have been calculated as a function of their period p for 1< or = p < or =12, starting from density-functional theory. The interplay between quantum confinement and local field effects is shown to be crucial. For light polarized in the growth direction it leads to the otherwise surprising justification of the use of a classical effective medium theory, even for the smallest periods. Only the inclusion of both contributions allows in ab initio and in semiempirical calculations to reproduce the experimentally observed birefringence.
