Previous observations and simulations suggest that an approximate 3°–5°C warming occurred at intermediate depths in the North Atlantic over several millennia during Heinrich stadial 1 (HS1), which induces warm salty water (WSW) lying beneath surface cold freshwater. This arrangement eventually generates ocean convective available potential energy (OCAPE), the maximum potential energy releasable by adiabatic vertical parcel rearrangements in an ocean column. The authors find that basin-scale OCAPE starts to appear in the North Atlantic (~67.5°–73.5°N) and builds up over decades at the end of HS1 with a magnitude of about 0.05 J kg−1. OCAPE provides a key kinetic energy source for thermobaric cabbeling convection (TCC). Using a high-resolution TCC-resolved regional model, it is found that this decadal-scale accumulation of OCAPE ultimately overshoots its intrinsic threshold and is released abruptly (~1 month) into kinetic energy of TCC, with further intensification from cabbeling. TCC has convective plumes with approximately 0.2–1-km horizontal scales and large vertical displacements (~1 km), which make TCC difficult to be resolved or parameterized by current general circulation models. The simulation herein indicates that these local TCC events are spread quickly throughout the OCAPE-contained basin by internal wave perturbations. Their convective plumes have large vertical velocities (~8–15 cm s−1) and bring the WSW to the surface, causing an approximate 2°C sea surface warming for the whole basin (~700 km) within a month. This exposes a huge heat reservoir to the atmosphere, which helps to explain the abrupt Bølling–Allerød warming.

Exactly solving the absolute minimum potential energy state (Lorenz reference state) is a difficult problem because of the nonlinear nature of the equation of state of seawater. This problem has been solved recently but the algorithm comes at a high computational cost. As the first part of this study, the authors develop an algorithm that is ~103–105 times faster, making it useful for energy diagnosis in ocean models. The second part of this study shows that the global patterns of Lorenz available potential energy (APE) density are distinct from those of eddy kinetic energy (EKE). This is because the Lorenz APE density is based on the entire domainwide parcel rearrangement, while mesoscale eddies, if related to baroclinic instability, are typically generated through local parcel rearrangement approximately around the eddy size. Inspired by this contrast, this study develops a locally defined APE framework: the eddy size–constrained APE density based on the strong constraint that the parcel rearrangement/displacement to achieve the minimum potential energy state should not exceed the local eddy size horizontally. This concept typically identifies baroclinically unstable regions. It is shown to be helpful to detect individual eddies/vortices and local EKE patterns, for example, around the Southern Ocean fronts and subtropical western boundary currents. This is consistent with the physical picture that mesoscale eddies are associated with a strong signature in both the velocity field (i.e., EKE) and the stratification (i.e., local APE). The new APE concept may be useful in parameterizing mesoscale eddies in ocean models.

Voyager observations of Saturn in 1980–81 discovered a wavy feature engirdling the planet at 47°N planetographic latitude. Its latitude coincides with that of an eastward jet stream, which is the second fastest on Saturn after the equatorial jet. The 47°N jet’s wavy morphology is unique among the known atmospheric jets on the gas giant planets. Since the Voyagers, it has been seen in every high-resolution image of this latitude for over 25 years and has been termed the Ribbon. The Ribbon has been interpreted as a dynamic instability in the jet stream. This study tests this interpretation and uses forward modeling to explore the observed zonal wind profile’s stability properties. Unforced, initial-value numerical experiments are performed to examine the nonlinear evolution of the jet stream. Parameter variations show that an instability occurs when the 47°N jet causes reversals in the potential vorticity (PV) gradient, which constitutes a violation of the Charney–Stern stability criterion. After the initial instability development, the simulations demonstrate that the instability’s amplitude nonlinearly saturates to a constant when the eddy generation by the instability is balanced by the destruction of the eddies. When the instability saturates, the zonal wind profile approaches neutral stability according to Arnol’d’s second criterion, and the jet’s path meanders in a Ribbon-like manner. It is demonstrated that the meandering of the 47°N jet occurs over a range of tropospheric static stability and background wind speed. The results here show that a nonlinearly saturated shear instability in the 47°N jet is a viable mechanism to produce the Ribbon morphology. Observations do not yet have the temporal coverage to confirm the creation and destruction of eddies, but these simulations predict that this is actively occurring in the Ribbon region. Similarities exist between the behaviors found in this model and the dynamics of PV fronts studied in the context of meandering western boundary currents in Earth’s oceans. In addition, the simulations capture the nonlinear aspects of a new feature discovered by the Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS), the String of Pearls, which resides in the equatorward tip of the 47°N jet. The Explicit Planetary Isentropic Coordinate (EPIC) model is used herein.

The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the tropics. Despite its primary importance, a generally accepted theory that accounts for fundamental features of the MJO, including its propagation speed, planetary horizontal scale, multiscale features, and quadrupole structures, remains elusive. In this study, the authors use a shallow-water model to simulate the MJO. In this model, convection is parameterized as a short-duration localized mass source and is triggered when the layer thickness falls below a critical value. Radiation is parameterized as a steady uniform mass sink. The following MJO-like signals are observed in the simulations: 1) slow eastward-propagating large-scale disturbances, which show up as low-frequency, low-wavenumber features with eastward propagation in the spectral domain, 2) multiscale structures in the time–longitude (Hovmöller) domain, and 3) quadrupole vortex structures in the longitude–latitude (map view) domain. The authors propose that the simulated MJO signal is an interference pattern of westward and eastward inertia–gravity (WIG and EIG) waves. Its propagation speed is half of the speed difference between the WIG and EIG waves. The horizontal scale of its large-scale envelope is determined by the bandwidth of the excited waves, and the bandwidth is controlled by the number density of convection events. In this model, convection events trigger other convection events, thereby aggregating into large-scale structures, but there is no feedback of the large-scale structures onto the convection events. The results suggest that the MJO is not so much a low-frequency wave, in which convection acts as a quasi-equilibrium adjustment, but is more a pattern of high-frequency waves that interact directly with the convection.

This thesis consists of two papers on the dynamics of Jovian planet atmospheres. The first paper discusses the uses of a normal-mode expansion in the vertical for modeling the dynamics of Jupiter's atmosphere. The second paper uses a non-linear numerical model based on the normal-mode expansion of the first paper to study the dynamics of baroclinic vortices. The abstracts for the two papers are reproduced below. Paper 1: We propose a non-linear, quasi-geostrophic, baroclinic model of Jovian atmospheric dynamics, in which vertical variations of velocity are represented by a truncated sum over a complete set of orthogonal functions obtained by a separation of variables of the linearized quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation. A set of equations for the time variation of the mode amplitudes in the non-linear case is then derived. We show that for a planet with a neutrally stable, fluid interior instead of a solid lower boundary, the barotropic mode represents motions in the interior, and is not affected by the baroclinic modes. One consequence of this is that a normal mode model with one baroclinic mode is dynamically equivalent to a one layer model with solid lower topography. We also show that for motions in Jupiter's cloudy lower troposphere, the stratosphere behaves nearly as a rigid lid, so that the normal-mode model is applicable to Jupiter. We test the accuracy of the normal-mode model for Jupiter using two simple problems: forced, vertically propagating Rossby waves, using two and three baroclinic modes, and baroclinic instability, using two baroclinic modes. We find that the normal-mode model provides qualitatively correct results, even with only a very limited number of vertical degrees of freedom. Paper 2: We examine the evolution of baroclinic vortices in a time dependent, nonlinear numerical model of a Jovian atmosphere. The model uses a normal-mode expansion in the vertical, using the barotropic and first two baroclinic modes (Achterberg and Ingersoll 1989). Our results for the stability of baroclinic vortices on an ƒ-plane in the absence of a mean zonal flow are consistent with previous results in the literature, although the presence of the deep fluid interior on the Jovian planets appears to shift the stability boundaries to smaller length scales. The presence of a mean zonal shear flow acts to stabilize vortices against instability, significantly modifies the finite amplitude form of baroclinic instabilities, and combined with internal barotropic instability (Gent and McWilliams 1986) produces periodic oscillations in the latitude and longitude of the vortex as observed at the level of the cloud tops. This instability may explain some, but not all, observations of longitudinal oscillations of vortices on the outer planets. Oscillations in aspect ratio and orientation of stable elliptical vortices in a zonal shear flow are observed in this baroclinic model, as in simpler two-dimensional models (Kida 1981). The meridional propagation and decay of vortices on a β-plane is inhibited by the presence of a mean zonal flow. The direction of propagation of a vortex relative to the mean zonal flow depends upon the sign of the meridional potential vorticity gradient; combined with observations of vortex drift rates, this may provide a constraint on model assumption for the flow in the deep interior of Jupiter.

The Madden Julian oscillation (MJO), also known as the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO), is a planetary-scale mode of variation in the tropical Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Basic questions about the MJO are why it propagates eastward at ~5 m s^(-1), why it lasts for intraseasonal time scales, and how it interacts with the fine structure that is embedded in it. This study will test the hypothesis that the MJO is not a wave but a wave packet-the interference pattern produced by a narrow frequency band of mixed Rossby gravity (MRG) waves. As such, the MJO would propagate with the MRG group velocity, which is eastward at ~5 m s^(-1) Simulation with a 3D model shows that MRG waves can be forced independently by relatively short-lived, eastward- and westward-moving disturbances, and the MRG wave packet can last long enough to form the intraseasonal variability. This hypothesis is consistent with the view that the MJO is episodic, with an irregular time interval between events rather than a periodic oscillation. The packet is defined as the horizontally smoothed variance of the MRG wave-the rectified MRG wave, which has features in common with the MJO. The two-dimensional Fourier analysis of the NOAA outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) dataset herein indicates that there is a statistically significant correlation between the MJO amplitude and wave packets of MRG waves but not equatorial Rossby waves or Kelvin waves, which are derived from the Matsuno shallow water theory. However, the biggest absolute value of the correlation coefficient is only 0.21, indicating that the wave packet hypothesis explains only a small fraction of the variance of the MJO in the OLR data.

Expressions are derived for the potential energy of a fluid whose density depends on three variables: temperature, pressure, and salinity. The thermal expansion coefficient is a function of depth, and the application is to thermobaric convection in the oceans. Energy conservation, with conversion between kinetic and potential energies during adiabatic, inviscid motion, exists for the Boussinesq and anelastic approximations but not for all approximate systems of equations. In the Boussinesq/anelastic system, which is a linearization of the thermodynamic variables, the expressions for potential energy involve thermodynamic potentials for salinity and potential temperature. Thermobaric instability can occur with warm salty water either above or below cold freshwater. In both cases the fluid may be unstable to large perturbations even though it is stable to small perturbations. The energy per mass of this finite-amplitude instability varies as the square of the layer thickness. With a 4-K temperature difference and a 0.6-psu salinity difference across a layer that is 4000 m thick, the stored potential energy is ∼0.3 m2 s−2, which is comparable to the kinetic energy of the major ocean currents. This potential could be released as kinetic energy in a single large event. Thermobaric effects cause parcels moving adiabatically to follow different neutral trajectories. A cold fresh parcel that is less dense than a warm salty parcel near the surface may be more dense at depth. Examples are given in which two isopycnal trajectories cross at one place and differ in depth by 1000 m or more at another.

Radio scintillations in Pioneer Venus radio Occultation data are simulated assuming that the index of refraction fluctuations in Venus's atmosphere responsible for the scintillations are directly caused by gravity wave fluctuations. The gravity waves are created by a global convection layer between 50- and 55-km attitude in Venus's atmosphere and propagate vertically. The authors compare the simulated scintillations with data from Pioneer Venus. These gravity waves can explain the spectral shape and amplitude of the radio scintilations. The shape at high frequencies is controlled by wave breaking, which yields a saturated spectrum. The amplitude is subject to parameters such as the intensity of the convection, the angle between the zonal winds and the beam path, and the zonal wind profile at polar latitudes. To match the observed amplitude of the scintillations, the velocity variations of the energy-bearing eddies in the convection must be at least 2 m s−1. This value is consistent with the Venus balloon results of Sagdeev et al. and is in the middle of the range considered by Leroy and Ingersoll in their study of convectively generated gravity waves. The later study, combined with the lower bound on velocity from the present study, then yields lower bounds on the vertical fluxes of momentum and energy in the Venus atmosphere.

On many planets there is a continuous heat supply to the surface and a continuous emission of infrared radiation to space by the atmosphere. Since the heat source is located at higher pressure than the heat sink, the system is capable of doing mechanical work. Atmospheric convection is a natural heat engine that might operate in this system. Based on the heat engine framework, a simple theory is presented for atmospheric convection that predicts the buoyancy, the vertical velocity, and the fractional area covered by either dry or moist convection in a state of statistical equilibrium. During one cycle of the convective heat engine, heat is taken from the surface layer (the hot source) and a portion of it is rejected to the free troposphere (the cold sink) from where it is radiated to space. The balance is transformed into mechanical work. The mechanical work is expended in the maintenance of the convective motions against mechanical dissipation. Ultimately, the energy dissipated by mechanical friction is transformed into heat. Then, a fraction of the dissipated energy is radiated to space while the remaining portion is recycled by the convecting air parcels. Increases in the fraction of energy dissipated at warmer temperature, at the expense of decreases in the fraction of energy dissipated at colder temperatures, lead to increases in the apparent efficiency of the convective heat engine. The volume integral of the work produced by the convective heat engine gives a measure of the statistical equilibrium amount of convective available potential energy (CAPE) that must be present in the planet's atmosphere so that the convective motions can be maintained against viscous dissipation. This integral is a fundamental global number qualifying the state of the planet in statistical equilibrium conditions. For the earth's present climate, the heat engine framework predicts a CAPE value of the order of 1000 J kg^−1 for the tropical atmosphere. This value is in agreement with observations. It also follows from our results that the total amount of CAPE present in a convecting atmosphere should increase with increases in the global surface temperature (or the atmosphere's opacity to infrared radiation).

The emission of internal gravity waves from a layer of dry convection embedded within a stable atmosphere with static stability and zonal winds varying in height is calculated. This theory is applied to Venus to investigate whether these waves can help support the westward maximum of angular momentum of Venus's middle atmosphere. The emission mechanism is similar to that suggested for driving the gravity modes of the Sun and relates the amplitude and spectrum of the waves to the amplitude and spectrum of the convection. Waves are damped by several mechanisms: wavebreaking in the stable atmosphere, critical layer absorption, reabsorption by the convection, and wave radiation to space. The authors use plane parallel geometry without rotation and assume sinusoidal wave fluctuations in the horizontal dimensions. The vertical dependence is determined using the WKBJ approximation. It is found that convectively generated gravity waves do not exert an acceleration where the westward winds are greatest. Instead, they deposit westward momentum in a 1-km thick layer just above the convection. Other waves deposit eastward momentum far above the westward wind maximum where decelerations can exceed 20 m s^−1 day^−1, comparable to deceleration amplitudes in Earth's mesosphere. Although the momentum fluxes by gravity waves are substantial, the vertical profile of acceleration does not match what is required for supporting Venus's atmospheric superrotation.

A shallow water model with realistic topography and idealized zonal wind forcing is used to investigate orographically forced modes in the Martian atmosphere. Locally, the model produces barotropic modes with periods within the broad range of periods observed at the sites of Viking Lander I and II (VILI and VL2) during the fall and spring seasons. Its variability at those sites is dominated by an oscillation of 3 Martian solar days (sols) in the region of VL1 and by a 6-sol oscillation in that of VL2. These oscillations are forced by the zonal asymmetries of the Martian mountain field. Their robustness with respect to changes of the fundamental model parameters is examined. Since the exhibited periods occur for a barotropic forcing field that is highly idealized, it is difficult to say whether they have much to do with the real Mars, but their resemblance to some of the periodicities present in the observed Martian climatology deserves further investigation. The spatial variability associated with the orographically forced oscillations is studied by means of extended empirical orthogonal function (EEOF) analysis. The 3-sol VL1 oscillation corresponds to a tropical, eastward traveling, zonal wavenumber one pattern. The 6-sol VL2 oscillation is characterized by two midlatitude, eastward traveling, mixed zonal wavenumber one and two and zonal wavenumber three and four patterns, with respective periods near 6.1 and 5.5 sols. The corresponding phase speeds are in agreement with some of the conclusions drawn from the lander observations. A linear stability analysis of the zonally asymmetric climatology reveals that the two most unstable modes are associated with periods near 3 and 6 sols; with the corresponding eigen-vectors showing patterns consistent with the results of the EEOF analyses.

A steady-state scheme for data assimilation in the context of a single, short period (relative to a day), sun-synchronous, polar-orbiting satellite is examined. If the satellite takes observations continuously, the gains, which are the weights for blending observations and predictions together, are steady in time. For a linear system forced by random noise, the optimal steady-state gains (Wiener gains) are equivalent to those of a Kalman filter. Computing the Kalman gains increases the computational cost of the model by a large factor, but computing the Wiener gains does not. The latter are computed by iteration using prior estimates of the gains to assimilate simulated observations of one run of the model, termed “truth,” into another run termed “prediction.” At each stage, the prediction errors form the basis for the next estimate of the gains. Steady state is achieved after three or four iterations. Further simplification is achieved by making the gains depend on longitudinal distance from the observation point, not on absolute longitude. For a single-layer primitive equation model, the scheme works well even if only the mass field is observed but not the velocity field. Although the scheme was developed for Mars Observer, it should be applicable to data retrieved from Earth atmosphere satellites, for example, UARS.

A linearized primitive equation (LPE) model is developed to study thermal tides in the atmosphere of Venus. The LPE model describes diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations of a cyclostrophically balanced atmosphere in which zonal velocity varies with altitude and latitude. The numerical algorithm follows Staniforth and Daley. The solar thermal forcing is increased algebraically in time to separate the forced tidal response from free atmospheric oscillations. Parameters of the basic state and forcing agree with Pioneer Venus observations. Results of the model are compared with the solar-fixed component of brightness temperature variations measured by Taylor et al. and Elson using data from the Pioneer Venus orbiter infrared radiometer (OIR). The comparison is made by convolving the computed model radiances with the weighting functions of the OIR channels. Agreement between LPE model results and OIR observations is excellent. Two interesting features of the OIR data are accounted for, namely, the slow variation of phase with altitude and the dominance of the semidiurnal oscillation over the diurnal oscillation. Success of the LPE model opens the way for calculating tidal transports of heat and momentum and assessing the role of tides in maintaining the Venus super-rotation.

A homogeneous fluid is bounded above and below by horizontal plane surfaces in rapid rotation about a vertical axis. An obstacle is attached to one of the surfaces, and at large distances from the obstacle the relative velocity is steady and horizontal. Solutions are obtained as power series expansions in the Rossby number, uniformly valid as the Taylor number approaches infinity. If the height of the obstacle is greater than the Rossby number times the depth, a stagnant region (Taylor column) forms over the obstacle. Outside this region there is a net circulation in a direction opposite the rotation. The shape of the stagnant region and the circulation are uniquely determined as part of the solution. Possible geophysical applications are discussed, and it is shown that stratification renders Taylor columns unlikely on earth, but that the Great Red Spot of Jupiter may be an example of this phenomenon, as Hide has suggested.

Radiative-convective equilibrium models of planetary atmospheres are discussed for the case when the infrared opacity is due to a vapor in equilibrium with its liquid or solid phase. For a grey gas, or for a gas which absorbs at all infrared wavelengths, equilibrium is impossible when the solar constant exceeds a critical value. Equilibrium therefore requires that the condensed phase evaporates into the atmosphere. Moist adiabatic and pseudoadiabatic atmospheres in which the condensing vapor is a major atmospheric constituent are considered. This situation would apply if the solar constant were supercritical with respect to an abundant substance such as water. It is shown that the condensing gas would be a major constituent at all levels in such an atmosphere. Photodissociation of water in the primordial Venus atmosphere is discussed in this context.

Most current models of Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) are cast in terms of a two-layer model, where a thin upper weather layer, which contains the vortex, overlies a much deeper layer, which is meant to represent the neutrally stratified deep atmosphere. Any motions in the deep layer are assumed to be zonal and steady. This two-layer model is dynamically equivalent to a one-layer model with meridionally varying solid bottom topography, called the reduced-gravity model. Specifying the motions, or lack thereof, in the lower layer of the two-layer model is equivalent to specifying the bottom topography, and hence the far-field potential vorticity, in the reduced-gravity model. Current models of the GRS start by guessing the deep motions and then proceed to study vortices using the implied bottom topography. Here, using the GRS cloud-top velocity data, we derive the bottom topography, up to a constant that depends on the unknown radius of deformation (or equivalently, the product of the reduced gravity and the mean thickness of the upper layer). The bottom topography is inferred from three quantities derived from the velocity data—Bernoulli streamfunction, kinetic energy per unit mass, and absolute vorticity—all of which are functions only of horizontal position in the reference frame of the vortex. Far from the vortex, potential vorticity versus latitude is calculated from the observed cloud-top zonal velocity and the derived bottom topography. The results show that the deep atmosphere is in differential motion and that the far-field potential vorticity gradient changes sign at several latitudes. Numerical shallow water experiments are performed, using both the derived bottom topography and the bottom topographies prescribed by current models. The results of three published studies are reproduced in our numerical experiments. Each of these models is successful in maintaining a long-lived, isolated vortex, but only the present model yields absolute vorticity profiles along streamlines that agree with those observed for the GRS by Dowling and Ingersoll. In all the models, large vortices form by merging with smaller vortices. In the present, observationally based model, and in one other published model, the smaller vortices arise spontaneously because the observed cloud-top zonal velocity profile is unstable. These two models require an additional momentum source to maintain the upper-layer zonal velocity profile. In the other two models, the bottom topography stabilizes the zonal velocity profile. If dissipation is present, the latter two models require an additional source of smaller vortices to maintain the larger one. A crucial unanswered question for the present model, and for Jupiter itself, is how the cloud-top zonal velocity profile is maintained in its present unstable state.

Layer thickness variations in Jupiter's atmosphere are investigated by treating potential vorticity as a conserved tracer. Starting with the horizontal velocity field measured from Voyager images, fluid trajectories around the Great Red Spot (GRS) and White Oval BC are calculated. The flow is assumed to be frictionless, adiabatic, hydrostatic, and steady in the reference frame of the vortex. Absolute vorticity is followed along each trajectory; its magnitude is assumed to vary directly as the thickness, which is defined as the mass per unit area between potential temperature surfaces. To the accuracy of the observations. the inferred thickness is a separable function of trajectory and latitude. The latitude dependence has positive curvature near the GRS and BC. The relative variations of thickness with respect to latitude are generally larger than the relative variations of Coriolis parameter with respect to latitude—the beta effect. The data are a useful diagnostic which will help differentiate between models, of Jovian vortices. The present analysis employs a quasi-geostrophic model in which a thin upper weather layer, which contains the vortex, is supported hydrostatically by a much deeper lower layer. In this model, the upper free surface does not contribute to the observed variation of thickness along trajectories. Such variations are due exclusively to bottom topography—flow of the deep lower layer relative to the vortex. The observation are used to infer the form of the deep zonal velocity profile vs. latitude. The magnitude of the profile depends on the unknown static stability. The principal result is the existence of horizontal shear in the deep layer zonal velocity profile, i.e., the lower layer is not in solid body rotation and does not act like a flat solid surface. In this respect the data support the hypothesis of Ingersoll and Cuong concerning motions in the deep layer. However at some latitudes the data violate Ingersoll and Cuong's criterion governing the compactness of the vortices. At these latitudes the topography allows standing Rossby waves (wakes) extending far downstream to the west. Observed wavelike features, the filamentary regions, are possibly formed by this mechanism.

A nonlinear numerical model of long-lived Jovian vortices has been constructed. We assume that the measured zonal velocity profile ubar(y) extends into the adiabatic interior, but that the eddies and large oval structures are confined to a shallow stably stratified upper layer. Each vortex is stationary with respect to the shear flow ubar(y) at a critical latitude yc, that is close to the latitude of the vortex center, in agreement with observed flows on Jupiter. Our model differs from the solitary wave model of Maxworthy and Redekopp in that the stratification is not large in our model (the radius of deformation is less than the latitudinal scale of the shear flow), and therefore stationary linear wave solutions, neutral or amplified, do not exist. The solutions obtained are strongly nonlinear in contrast to the solitary wave solutions which are the weakly nonlinear extensions of ultralong linear waves. Both stable and unstable vortices are found in the numerical experiments. When two stable vortices collide, they merge after a short transient phase to form a larger stable vortex. This merging, rather than the non-interaction behavior predicted by the solitary wave theory, is more in agreement with observations of Jovian vortices. We suggest that the long-lived Jovian vortices maintain themselves against dissipation by adsorbing smaller vortices which are produced by convection.

The observed zonal motion of Jupiter's atmosphere near the cloud tops is investigated assuming geostrophic balance and a systematic temperature difference between light and dark bands. Excellent agreement is obtained between observed velocities and those predicted from the thermal wind relation with the temperature and rotation rate of the deep atmosphere independent of latitude. The light bands are found to be warmer than the dark bands. This model is inconsistent with a monotonic variation of insolation as the only energy source for the flow. The barotropic stability criterion is also applied to the observed motion, and it appears that the necessary criterion for instability is approached but not exceeded in mid-latitude regions.
