Comparisons of precipitation between general circulation models (GCMs) and observations are often confounded by a mismatch between model output and instrument measurements, including variable type and temporal and spatial resolutions. To mitigate these differences, the radar-simulator Quickbeam within the Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project (CFMIP) Observation Simulator Package (COSP) simulates reflectivity from model variables at the subgrid scale. This work adapts Quickbeam to the dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite. The longer wavelength of the DPR is used to evaluate moderate to heavy precipitation in GCMs, which is missed when Quickbeam is used as a cloud radar simulator. Latitudinal and land–ocean comparisons are made between COSP output from the Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5) and DPR data. Additionally, this work improves the COSP subgrid algorithm by applying a more realistic, nondeterministic approach to assigning GCM gridbox convective cloud cover when convective cloud is not provided as a model output. Instead of assuming a static 5% convective cloud coverage, DPR convective precipitation coverage is used as a proxy for convective cloud coverage. For example, DPR observations show that convective rain typically only covers about 1% of a 2° grid box, but that the median convective rain area increases to over 10% in heavy rain cases. In our CAM5 tests, the updated subgrid algorithm improved the comparison between reflectivity distributions when the convective cloud cover is provided versus the default 5% convective cloud-cover assumption.

A well-designed deployment of well-maintained surface instruments as well as abundant rainfall provided an excellent dataset with which to evaluate the Micro Rain Radar (MRR) performance for estimating raindrop size distribution (DSD) and its integral rainfall parameters with respect to the consolidated devices during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field campaign. The MRR was collocated with two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and Autonomous Parsivel2 Unit (APU) at three different sites located at 5–70-km distances from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s S-band dual-polarization Doppler radar (NPOL). A comparative study between MRR, 2DVD, APU, and NPOL was conducted including all rainy minutes as well as minutes of stratiform rain and convective rain. Considering 2DVD as a primary reference, a good agreement was evident for reflectivity between MRR’s lowest reliable height and 2DVD with an absolute bias of less than 2 dB even in convective rain except for one site. For rainfall rate, the percent absolute bias between MRR and 2DVD ranged between 25% and 35% in stratiform rain and about 10% higher in convective rain. Agreement for mean mass-weighted raindrop diameter was good (bias less than 0.1 mm), whereas MRR overestimated the normalized intercept parameter of the gamma DSD [mean bias among the three sites was −0.13 log(mm−1 m−3)]. The agreement between MRR and APU was slightly worse than the one between MRR and 2DVD. When the horizontal and differential reflectivities of NPOL were compared with the ones derived from the MRR DSD resampled within the radar volume, we found an absolute bias of approximately 3 and 0.4 dB, respectively.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s (GSFC’s) W-band (94 GHz) Cloud Radar System (CRS) has been comprehensively updated to modern solid-state and digital technology. This W-band (94 GHz) radar flies in nadir-pointing mode on the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft, providing polarimetric reflectivity and Doppler measurements of clouds and precipitation. This paper describes the design and signal processing of the upgraded CRS. It includes details on the hardware upgrades [solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) transmitter, antenna, and digital receiver] including a new reflectarray antenna and solid-state transmitter. It also includes algorithms, including internal loop-back calibration, external calibration using a direct relationship between volume reflectivity and the range-integrated backscatter of the ocean, and a modified staggered–pulse repetition frequency (PRF) Doppler algorithm that is highly resistant to unfolding errors. Data samples obtained by upgraded CRS through recent NASA airborne science missions are provided.

The intrinsic uncertainty of radar-based retrievals in snow originates from a large diversity of snow growth habits, densities, and particle size distributions, all of which can make interpreting radar measurements of snow very challenging. The application of polarimetric radar for snow measurements can mitigate some of these issues. In this study, a novel polarimetric method for quantification of the extinction coefficient and visibility in snow, based on the joint use of radar reflectivity at horizontal polarization Z and specific differential phase KDP, is introduced. A large 2D-video-disdrometer snow dataset from central Oklahoma is used to derive a polarimetric bivariate power-law relation for the extinction coefficient, . The relation is derived for particle aspect ratios ranging from 0.5 to 0.8 and the width of the canting angle distribution ranging from 0° to 40°, values typical of aggregated snow, and validated via theoretical and analytical derivations/simulations. The multiplier of the relation is sensitive to variations in particles’ densities, the width of the canting angle distribution, and particles’ aspect ratios, whereas the relation’s exponents are practically invariant to changes in the latter two parameters. This novel approach is applied to polarimetric S-band WSR-88D data and verified against previous studies and in situ measurements of the extinction coefficient for four snow events in the eastern United States. The polarimetric radar estimates of the extinction coefficient exhibit smaller biases in comparison to previous studies concerning the ground measurements. The results indicate that there is good potential for reliable radar estimates of visibility from polarimetric weather radars, a parameter inversely proportional to the extinction coefficient.

We have developed C-band compact polarimetry geophysical model functions for RADARSAT Constellation Mission ocean surface wind speed retrieval. A total of 1594 RADARSAT-2 images acquired in quad-polarization SAR imaging mode were collocated with in situ buoy observations. This dataset is first used to simulate compact polarimetric data and to examine their dependencies on radar incidence angle and wind vectors. We find that right circular transmit, right circular receive (RR-pol) radar backscatters are less sensitive to incidence angles and wind directions but are more dependent on wind speeds, compared to right circular transmit, horizontal receive (RH-pol), right circular transmit, vertical receive (RV-pol), and right circular transmit, left circular receive (RL-pol). Subsequently, the matchup data pairs are used to derive the coefficients of the transfer functions for the proposed compact polarimetric geophysical model (CMOD) functions, and to validate the associated wind speed retrieval accuracy. Statistical comparisons show that the retrieved wind speeds from CMODRH, CMODRV, CMODRL, and CMODRR are in good agreement with buoy measurements, with root-mean-square errors of 1.38, 1.51, 1.47, and 1.25 m s−1, respectively. The results suggest that compact polarimetry is a good alternative to linear polarization for wind speed retrieval. CMODRR is more appropriate to retrieve high wind speeds than CMODRH, CMODRV or CMODRL.

Dual-frequency millimeter-wavelength radar observations in snowfall are analyzed in order to evaluate differences in conventional polarimetric radar variables such as differential reflectivity (ZDR) specific differential phase shift (KDP) and linear depolarization ratio (LDR) at traditional cloud radar frequencies at Ka and W bands (~35 and ~94 GHz, correspondingly). Low radar beam elevation (~5°) measurements were performed at Oliktok Point, Alaska, with a scanning fully polarimetric radar operating in the horizontal–vertical polarization basis. This radar has the same gate spacing and very close beam widths at both frequencies, which largely alleviates uncertainties associated with spatial and temporal data matching. It is shown that observed Ka- and W-band ZDR differences are, on average, less than about 0.5 dB and do not have a pronounced trend as a function of snowfall reflectivity. The observed ZDR differences agree well with modeling results obtained using integration over nonspherical ice particle size distributions. For higher signal-to-noise ratios, KDP data derived from differential phase measurements are approximately scaled as reciprocals of corresponding radar frequencies indicating that the influence of non-Rayleigh scattering effects on this variable is rather limited. This result is also in satisfactory agreement with data obtained by modeling using realistic particle size distributions. Observed Ka- and W-band LDR differences are strongly affected by the radar hardware system polarization “leak” and are generally less than 4 dB. Smaller differences are observed for higher depolarizations, where the polarization “leak” is less pronounced. Realistic assumptions about particle canting and the system polarization isolation lead to modeling results that satisfactorily agree with observational dual-frequency LDR data.

The latest established generation of weather radars provides polarimetric measurements of a wide variety of meteorological and nonmeteorological targets. While the classification of different precipitation types based on polarimetric data has been studied extensively, nonmeteorological targets have garnered relatively less attention beyond an effort to detect them for removal from meteorological products. In this paper we present a supervised learning classification system developed in the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) that uses Bayesian inference with empirical probability density distributions to assign individual range gate samples into 7 meteorological and 12 nonmeteorological classes, belonging to five top-level categories of hydrometeors, terrain, zoogenic, anthropogenic, and immaterial. We demonstrate how the accuracy of the class probability estimates provided by a basic naive Bayes classifier can be further improved by introducing synthetic channels created through limited neighborhood filtering, by properly managing partial moment nonresponse, and by considering spatial correlation of class membership of adjacent range gates. The choice of Bayesian classification provides well-substantiated quality estimates for all meteorological products, a feature that is being increasingly requested by users of weather radar products. The availability of comprehensive, fine-grained classification of nonmeteorological targets also enables a large array of emerging applications, utilizing nonprecipitation echo types and demonstrating the need to move from a single, universal quality metric of radar observations to one that depends on the application, the measured target type, and the specificity of the customers’ requirements. Significance Statement In addition to meteorological echoes, weather radars observe a wide variety of nonmeteorological phenomena including birds, insects, and human-made objects like ships and aircraft. Conventionally, these data have been rejected as undesirable disturbance, but lately their value for applications like aeroecological monitoring of bird and insect migration has been understood. The utilization of these data, however, has been hampered by a lack of comprehensive classification of nonmeteorological echoes. In this paper we present a comprehensive, fine-grained, probabilistic classifier for all common types of nonmeteorological echoes which enables the implementation of a wide range of novel weather radar applications.

As the existing NEXRAD network nears the end of its life cycle, intense study and planning are underway to design a viable replacement system. Ideally, such a system would offer improved temporal resolution compared to NEXRAD, without a loss in data quality. In this study, scan speedup techniques—such as beam multiplexing (BMX) and radar imaging—are tested to assess their viability in obtaining high-quality rapid updates for a simulated long-range weather radar. The results of this study—which uses a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model–simulated supercell case—show that BMX generally improves data quality for a given scan time or can provide a speedup factor of 1.69–2.85 compared to NEXRAD while maintaining the same level of data quality. Additionally, radar imaging is shown to improve data quality and/or decrease scan time when selectively used; however, deleterious effects are observed when imaging is used in regions with sharp reflectivity gradients parallel to the beam spoiling direction. Consideration must be given to the subsequent loss of sensitivity and beam broadening. Finally, imaging is shown to have an effect on the radar-derived mesocyclone strength (ΔV) of a simulated supercell. Because BMX and radar imaging are most easily achieved with an all-digital phased array radar (PAR), these results make a strong argument for the use of all-digital PAR for high-resolution weather observations. It is believed that the results from this study can inform decisions about possible scanning strategies and design of a NEXRAD replacement system for high-resolution weather radar data.

This paper describes a technique for estimating the liquid water content (LWC) and a characteristic particle diameter in stratocumulus clouds using radar and lidar observations. The uncertainty in LWC estimate from radar and lidar measurements is significantly reduced once the characteristic particle diameter is known. The technique is independent of the drop size distribution. It is applicable for a broad range of W-band reflectivityZbetween −30 and 0 dBZand all values of lidar backscatterβobservations. No partitioning of cloud or drizzle is required on the basis of an arbitrary threshold ofZas in prior studies. A method for estimating droplet diameter and LWC was derived from the electromagnetic simulations of radar and lidar observations. In situ stratocumulus cloud and drizzle probe spectra were input to the electromagnetic simulation. The retrieved droplet diameter and LWC were validated using in situ measurements from the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The retrieval method was applied to radar and lidar measurements from the northeastern Pacific. Uncertainty in the retrieved droplet diameter and LWC that are due to the measurement errors in radar and lidar backscatter measurements are 7% and 14%, respectively. The retrieved LWC was validated using the concurrent G-band radiometer estimates of the liquid water path.

A novel way to process polarimetric radar data collected via plan position indicator (PPI) scans and display those data in a time–height format is introduced. The columnar vertical profile (CVP) methodology uses radar data collected via multiple elevation scans, limited to data within a set region in range and azimuth relative to the radar, to create vertical profiles of polarimetric radar data representative of that limited region in space. This technique is compared to others existing in the literature, and various applications are discussed. Polarimetric ice microphysical retrievals are performed on CVPs created within the stratiform rain region of two mesoscale convective systems sampled during two field campaigns, where CVPs follow the track of research aircraft. Aircraft in situ data are collocated to microphysical retrieval data, and the accuracy of these retrievals is tested against other retrieval techniques in the literature.

This work describes a phase-resolving wave-forecasting algorithm that is based on the assimilation of marine radar image time series. The algorithm is tested against synthetic data and field observations. The algorithm couples X-band marine radar observations with a phase-resolving wave model that uses the linear mild slope equations for reconstruction of water surface elevations over a large domain of O(km) and a prescribed time window of O(min). The reconstruction also enables wave-by-wave forecasting through forward propagation in space and time. Marine radar image time series provide the input wave observations through a previously given relationship between backscatter intensity and the radial component of the sea surface slope. The algorithm assimilates the wave slope information into the model via a best-fit wave source function at the boundary that minimizes the slope reconstruction error over an annular region at the outer ranges of the radar images. The wave model is then able to propagate the waves across a polar domain to a location of interest at nearer ranges. The constraints on the method for achieving real-time forecasting are identified, and the algorithm is verified against synthetic data and tested using field observations.

Differential absorption radar (DAR) offers an active remote sensing solution to the problem of measuring humidity profiles with high vertical and horizontal resolution in hydrometeor layers. The Vapor In-Cloud Profiling Radar (VIPR) is a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) G-band DAR tunable from 167 to 174.8 GHz being developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Here we describe ground-based measurements from VIPR performed at the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site for humidity product validation. Two distinct measurement capabilities are investigated: 1) humidity profiles inside of cloudy volumes with 180 m vertical resolution, and 2) integrated water vapor (IWV) between the surface and cloud base. High radar sensitivity permits detection of upper-tropospheric clouds and retrieval of humidity profiles above 10 km in height. We develop an improved humidity retrieval algorithm based on a regularized least squares method that includes detailed accounting of measurement covariances and systematic error sources. This regularization mitigates high-spatial-frequency humidity biases that arise from frequency-dependent hydrometeor scattering, which is an important limitation for DAR systems. Through comparisons with over 20 coincident radiosondes, we find close agreement between in situ and remotely sensed humidity profiles, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.96, root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.8 g m−3, and median retrieval precision of 0.5 g m−3. Using a merged radiosonde and Raman lidar product for surface-to-cloud-base IWV, we demonstrate precise column sounding capabilities with r = 1.00, RMSE of 1.2 mm, and median retrieval precision of 0.25 mm.

This article illustrates how multifrequency radar observations can refine the mass–size parameterization of frozen hydrometeors in scattering models and improve the correlation between the radar observations and in situ measurements of microphysical properties of ice and snow. The data presented in this article were collected during the GPM Cold Season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) (2012) and Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEx) (2015) field campaigns, where the true mass–size relationship was not measured. Starting from size and shape distributions of ice particles measured in situ, scattering models are used to simulate an ensemble of reflectivity factors for various assumed mass–size parameterizations (MSP) of the power-law type. This ensemble is then collocated to airborne and ground-based radar observations, and the MSPs are refined by retaining only those that reproduce the radar observations to a prescribed level of accuracy. A versatile “retrieval dashboard” is built to jointly analyze the optimal MSPs and associated retrievals. The analysis shows that the optimality of an MSP depends on the physical assumptions made in the scattering simulators. This work confirms also the existence of a relationship between parameters of the optimal MSPs. Through the MSP optimization, the retrievals of ice water contentMand mean diameterDmseem robust to the change in meteorological regime (between GCPEx and OLYMPEx); whereas the retrieval of the diameter spreadSmseems more campaign dependent.

Unfold Radar Velocity (UNRAVEL) is an open-source modular Doppler velocity dealiasing algorithm for weather radars. UNRAVEL is an algorithm that does not need external reference velocity data, making it easily applicable. The proposed algorithm includes 11 core modules and 2 dealiasing strategies. UNRAVEL is an iterative algorithm. The goal is to build the dealiasing results starting with the strictest possible continuity tests in azimuth and range and, after each step, relaxing the parameters to include more results from a progressively growing number of reference points. UNRAVEL also has modules that perform 3D continuity checks. Thanks to this modular design, the number of dealiasing strategies can be expanded in order to optimize the dealiasing results. While the first driver dealiases Doppler velocity from each tilt independently from one another, the second driver also performs a three-dimensional continuity check of the velocity using successive elevations. The proposed dealiasing algorithm is tested using severe weather data from an S-band Doppler radar that have been aliased to mimic aliased radial velocity patterns that would be observed by a C-band Doppler radar. Artificially aliasing S-band data permits creation of a reference to which the performance of various dealiasing techniques can be compared. Comparisons show that UNRAVEL consistently outperforms other established dealiasing algorithms for the test period selected in this work.

Region-based Recursive Doppler Dealiasing (R2D2) is a novel dealiasing algorithm to unfold Doppler velocity fields obtained by operational radar measurements. It specializes in resolving issues when the magnitude of the gate-to-gate velocity shear approaches or exceeds the Nyquist velocity. This occurs either in highly sheared situations, or when the Nyquist velocity is low. Highly sheared situations, such as convergence lines or mesocyclones, are of particular interest for nowcasting and warnings. R2D2 masks high-shear areas and adds a spatial buffer around them. The areas between the buffers are then identified as continuous regions that lie within the same Nyquist interval. Each region subsequently is assigned its most likely Nyquist interval by applying vertical and temporal continuity constraints, as well as supplemental wind information from an operational mesoscale model. The shear zones are then resolved using 2D continuity in azimuth and range. This 4D procedure is repeated until no further improvement can be achieved. Each iteration with fewer folds identifies fewer but larger continuous regions and less shear zones until an optimum is reached. Residual errors, often related to shear greater than the Nyquist velocity, are contained to small areas within the buffer zones. This approach maximizes operational performance in high-shear situations and restricts errors to minimal areas to mitigate error propagation.

The Multi-Radar-Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system was transitioned into operations at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction in the fall of 2014. It provides high-quality and high-resolution severe weather and precipitation products for meteorology, hydrology, and aviation applications. Among processing modules, the radar data quality control (QC) plays a critical role in effectively identifying and removing various nonhydrometeor radar echoes for accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). Since its initial implementation in 2014, the radar QC has undergone continuous refinements and enhancements to ensure its robust performance across seasons and all regions in the continental United States and southern Canada. These updates include 1) improved melting-layer delineation, 2) clearance of wind farm contamination, 3) mitigation of corrupt data impacts due to hardware issues, 4) mitigation of sun spikes, and 5) mitigation of residual ground/lake/sea clutter due to sidelobe effects and anomalous propagation. This paper provides an overview of the MRMS radar data QC enhancements since 2014.

Two Ocean State Monitoring and Analyzing Radar (OSMAR071) (7.8 MHz) high-frequency (HF) radars and four moored ADCPs were operated concurrently in the southwestern Taiwan Strait during January–March 2013. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons of surface currents were conducted between the HF radars and the ADCPs. Except for a location probably affected by shallow water and sand waves on the Taiwan Banks, the HF-radar-derived radial currents (radials) showed good agreement with the ADCP measured results (correlation coefficient: 0.89–0.98; rms difference: 0.07–0.13 m s−1). To provide further insight into the geophysical processes involved, the performance of the HF-radar-derived radials was further evaluated under different sea states (sea states: 2–6). It was found that both the data returns of the radar-derived radials and the differences between the radar-derived radials and the ADCP-derived radials varied with sea state. The HF radar performed best at sea state 4 in terms of data returns. The spatial coverage increased rapidly as the waves increased from sea state 2 to 4. However, it decreased slowly from sea state 4 to 6. Second, the radial differences were relatively high under lower sea states (2 and 3) at the location where the best agreement was obtained between the radar and ADCP radials, whereas the differences increased as the sea states increased at the other three locations. The differences between the radials measured by the HF radars and the ADCPs could be attributed to wave-induced Stokes drift and spatial sampling differences.

Severe thunderstorms and their associated tornadoes pose significant threats to life and property, and using radar data to accurately measure the rotational velocity of circulations in thunderstorms is essential for appropriate, timely warnings. One key factor in accurately measuring circulation velocity is the azimuthal spacing between radar data points, which is referred to as the azimuthal sampling interval. Previous studies have shown that reducing the azimuthal sampling interval can aid in measuring circulation velocity; however, this comes at the price of increased computational complexity. Thus, choosing the best compromise requires knowledge of the relationship between the radar azimuthal sampling interval and the accuracy of the circulation strength as measured from the radar data. In this work, we use simulations to quantify the impact of azimuthal sampling on the strength of radar-observed circulations and show that the improvements get progressively smaller as the azimuthal sampling interval decreases. Thus, improved characterization of circulations can be achieved without using the finest possible sampling grid. We use real data to validate the results of the simulations, which can be used to inform the selection of an appropriate azimuthal sampling interval that balances the accuracy of the radar-observed circulations and computational complexity.

Raindrop size distribution (DSD) observed using a disdrometer can be represented by a constrained-gamma (C-G) DSD model based on the empirical relationship between shape (µ) and slope (Λ). The C-G DSD model can be used to retrieve DSDs and rain microphysical parameters from dual-polarization radar measurements of reflectivity (ZH) and differential reflectivity (ZDR). This study presents a newµ–Λ relationship to characterize rain microphysics in South Korea using a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and Yong-in S-band dual-polarization radar. To minimize sampling errors from the 2DVD and radar measurements, measured size distributions are truncated by particle size and velocity-based filtering and compared with rain gauge measurement. The calibration biases of radarZHandZDRwere calculated using the self-consistency constraint and vertical pointing measurements. The derivedµ–Λ relationship was verified using the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and standard deviation of the size distribution (σm), calculated from the 2DVD, for comparison with existingµ–Λ relationships for Florida and Oklahoma. TheDm–σmrelationship derived from the 2DVD corresponded well with theµ–Λ relationship. Theµ–Λ relationship derived for the Korean Peninsula was similar to Florida, and both generally had largerµvalues than Oklahoma for the same Λ. The derivedµ–Λ relationship was applied to retrieve DSD parameters from polarimetric radar data, and the retrieved DSDs and derived physical parameters were evaluated and compared with the 2DVD measurements. The polarization radar-based C-G DSD model characterized rain microphysics more accurately than the exponential DSD model. The C-G DSD model based on the newly derivedµ–Λ relationship performed the best at retrieving rain microphysical parameters.

Radar retrievals of drop size distribution (DSD) parameters are developed and evaluated over the mountainous Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The observations used to develop retrievals were collected during the 2015/16 Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) and included the NASA S-band dual-polarimetric (NPOL) radar and a collection of second-generation Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL2) disdrometers over the windward slopes of the barrier. Nonlinear and random forest regressions are applied to the PARSIVEL2 data to develop retrievals for median volume diameter, liquid water content, and rain rate. Improvement in DSD retrieval accuracy, defined by the mean error of the retrieval relative to PARSIVEL2 observations, was achieved when using the random forest model when compared with nonlinear regression. Evaluation of disdrometer observations and the retrievals from NPOL indicate that the radar retrievals can accurately reproduce observed DSDs in this region, including the common wintertime regime of small but numerous raindrops that is important there. NPOL retrievals during the OLYMPEX period are further evaluated using two-dimensional video disdrometers (2DVD) and vertically pointing Micro Rain Radars. Results indicate that radar retrievals using random forests may be skillful in capturing DSD characteristics in the lowest portions of the atmosphere.

A Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is utilized to compare the skill of an A-Train-like observing system with a cloud, convection, and precipitation (CCP) observing system like that contemplated for the 2020s by the 2017 National Academy of Sciences Decadal Survey. The main objective is to demonstrate a framework for observational trade space studies. This initial work focuses on weakly precipitating warm shallow cumulus constructed from in situ data. Radiative computations are based on Mie theory with spherical assumptions. Simulated measurements in the CCP configuration consist of W- and Ka-band radar reflectivity and path-integrated attenuation, 31 and 94 GHz brightness temperatures (Tb), and visible and near-infrared reflectances. The collection of measurements in the CloudSat configuration is identical, but includes a single 94 GHz radar frequency, and the uncertainty in the 94 GHz microwave brightness temperature is increased to mimic the CloudSat Tb product. The experiments demonstrate that it remains a challenge to diagnose cloud properties in the presence of light rain because of the tendency of microwave remote sensing to respond to the higher moments of the hydrometeor populations. Rain properties are significantly better constrained than cloud properties, even in the optimal CCP configuration. The addition of Ka-band measurements places substantial constraints on the precipitation rain effective radius and rain rates. The Tb offers important information regarding the column-integrated condensate mass, the measurement accuracy of which appears more likely to affect the retrievals of clouds with low liquid water path. The constraints provided by reflectances are largely restricted to regions near the cloud top, particularly in the raining cases.

The statistical properties of the radar echoes from biological, precipitation, and ground targets observed with the McGill S-band dual-polarization radar have been used to devise a polarimetric and a nonpolarimetric fuzzy logic algorithm for pixel-by-pixel target identification. Radar observations of migrating birds show distinctly different polarimetric features during their relative approach and departure from the radar site illustrating the dependency of radar parameters on the canting angle and scattering cross section. The devised algorithms have been tested with two independent events, each consisting of 2 h of radar observations with a 5-min temporal resolution. One event consisted of precipitation without birds while the other contained only birds. The misclassifications were 10.12% and 9.6%, respectively, for the two cases for the nonpolarimetric algorithm, and 1.99% and 0.92% for the polarimetric algorithm. The results indicate that even though nonpolarimetric radar membership functions may be considered adequate for separating radar echo returns from birds, precipitation, and ground targets, they are not sufficiently skilled if a greater accuracy is required. Target identification without polarimetric variables especially fails in the region of zero isodop and in precipitation with an echo top below 4 km.

Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Gulf Coast as a major hurricane on 25 August 2017 before exiting the state as a tropical storm on 29 August 2017. Left in its wake was historic flooding, with some locations measuring more than 60 in. (150 cm) of rain over a 5-day period. The WSR-88D radar (KHGX) maintained operations for the entirety of the event. Rain gauge data from the Harris County Flood Warning System (HCFWS) was used for validation with the full radar dataset to retrieve daily and event-total precipitation estimates for the period 25–29 August 2017. The KHGX precipitation estimates were then compared with the HCFWS gauges. Three different hybrid polarimetric rainfall retrievals were used, along with attenuation-based retrieval that employs the radar-observed differential propagation. An advantage of using a attenuation-based retrieval is its immunity to partial beam blockage and calibration errors in reflectivity and differential reflectivity. All of the retrievals are susceptible to changes in the observed drop size distribution (DSD). No in situ DSD data were available over the study area, so changes in the DSD were interpreted by examining the observed radar data. We examined the parameter space of two key values in the attenuation retrieval to test the sensitivity of the rain retrieval. Selecting a value of α = 0.015 and β = 0.600 provided the best overall results, relative to the gauges, but more work needs to be done to develop an automated technique to account for changes in the ambient DSD.

A variational retrieval of rain microphysics from polarimetric radar data (PRD) has been developed through the use of S-band parameterized polarimetric observation operators. Polarimetric observations allow for the optimal retrieval of cloud and precipitation microphysics for weather quantification and data assimilation for convective-scale numerical weather prediction (NWP) by linking PRD to physical parameters. Rain polarimetric observation operators for reflectivity ZH, differential reflectivity ZDR, and specific differential phase KDP were derived for S-band PRD using T-matrix scattering amplitudes. These observation operators link the PRD to the physical parameters of water content W and mass-/volume-weighted diameter Dm for rain, which can be used to calculate other microphysical information. The S-band observation operators were tested using a 1D variational retrieval that uses the (nonlinear) Gauss–Newton method to iteratively minimize the cost function to find an optimal estimate of Dm and W separately for each azimuth of radar data, which can be applied to a plan position indicator (PPI) radar scan (i.e., a single elevation). Experiments on two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) data demonstrated the advantages of including ΦDP observations and using the nonlinear solution rather than the (linear) optimal interpolation (OI) solution. PRD collected by the Norman, Oklahoma (KOUN) WSR-88D on 15 June 2011 were used to successfully test the retrieval method on radar data. The successful variational retrieval from the 2DVD and the radar data demonstrate the utility of the proposed method.

During spring 2016 and spring 2017, a vertically pointing, S-band Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radar (UMass FMCW) was deployed in northern Alabama under the auspices of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX)-Southeast. In total, ~14 weeks of data were collected, in conditions ranging from quiescent clear skies to severe thunderstorms. The principal objective of these deployments was to characterize the boundary layer evolution near the VORTEX-Southeast domain. In this paper, we describe intermediate results in service of this objective. Specifically, we describe updates to the UMass FMCW system, document its deployments for VORTEX-Southeast, and apply four automated algorithms: 1) a dealiasing algorithm to the Doppler velocities, 2) a fuzzy logic scatterer classification scheme to separate precipitation from nonprecipitation observations, 3) a brightband/melting-layer identification algorithm for stratiform precipitation, and 4) an extended Kalman filter–based convective boundary layer depth (mixing height) measurement algorithm for nonprecipitation observations. Results from the latter two applications are qualitatively verified against retrieved soundings from a collocated thermodynamic profiling system.

Dealiasing is a common procedure in radar radial velocity quality control. Generally, there are two dealiasing steps: a continuity check and a reference check. In this paper, a modified version that uses azimuthal variance of radial velocity is introduced based on the integrating velocity–azimuth process (IVAP) method, referred to as the V-IVAP method. The new method can retrieve the averaged winds within a local area instead of averaged wind within a full range circle by the velocity–azimuth display (VAD) or the modified VAD method. The V-IVAP method is insensitive to the alias of the velocity, and provides a better way to produce reference velocities for a reference check. Instead of a continuity check, we use the IVAP method for a fine reference check because of its high-frequency filtering function. Then a dealiasing procedure with two steps of reference check is developed. The performance of the automatic dealiasing procedure is demonstrated by retrieving the wind field of a tornado. Using the dealiased radar velocities, the retrieved winds reveal a clear mesoscale vortex. A test based on radar network observations also has shown that the two-step dealiasing procedure based on V-IVAP and IVAP methods is reliable.

An examination of the applicability and accuracy of the empirical wave inversion method in the presence of swell waves is presented. The ability of the method to invert Doppler spectra to wave directional spectra and bulk wave parameters is investigated using one-month data from a 12 MHz WERA High Frequency (HF) radar system and in-situ data from a wave buoy. Three different swell inversion models are evaluated: LPM (Lipa et al. 1981), WFG (Wang et al. 2016) and EMP, an empirical approach introduced in this study. The swell inversions were carried out using two different scenarios: (1) a single beam from a single radar site and two beams from a single radar site, and (2) two beams from two sites (a single beam per site) intersecting each other at the buoy location. The LPM method utilized using two beams from two different sites was found to provide the best estimations of swell parameters (swell height RMS error 0.24m) and showed a good correlation with the partitioned swell in-situ values. For the wind wave inversion, the empirical method presented here is used with an empirical coefficient of 0.3 which seems to be suitable for universal application for all radar operating frequencies. The inverted swell parameters are used to create a swell spectrum which is combined with the inverted wind wave spectrum to create a full directional wave spectrum. The wave inversion method presented in this study although empirical does not require calibration with in situ data and can be applied to any beam forming system and operating frequency.

Nowcasting based on weather radar uses the current and past observations to make estimations of future radar echoes. There are many types of operationally deployed nowcasting systems, but none of them are currently based on deep learning, despite it being an active area of research in the last few years. This paper explores deep learning models as alternatives to current methods by proposing different architectures and comparing them against some operational nowcasting systems. The methods proposed here, harnessing residual convolutional encoder-decoder architectures, reach a level of performance expected of current systems and in certain scenarios can even outperform them. Finally, some of the potential drawbacks of using deep learning are analyzed. No decay in the performance on a different geographical area from where the models were trained was found. No edge or checkerboard artifact, common in convolutional operations, was found that affects the nowcasting metrics.

Spaceborne precipitation radars, including the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission’s Precipitation Radar (PR) and the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission’s Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR), measure not only precipitation echoes but surface echoes as well, the latter of which are used to estimate the path-integrated attenuation (PIA) in the surface reference technique (SRT). In our previous study based on analyzing PR measurements, we found that attenuation-free surface backscattering cross sections (denoted by ) over land increased in the presence of precipitation. This behavior, called the soil moisture effect, causes an underestimate of the PIA by the SRT as the method does not explicitly consider this effect. In this study, measurements made by Ku-band Precipitation Radar (KuPR) and Ka-band Precipitation Radar (KaPR), which comprise the DPR, were analyzed to examine whether KuPR and KaPR exhibit similar dependencies on the soil moisture as does the PR. For both KuPR and KaPR, an increase in was observed for a large portion of the land area, except for forests and deserts. Results from the Hitschfeld–Bordan (HB) method suggest that increases with the surface precipitation rate for light precipitation events. Meanwhile, for heavy precipitation, owing to the degradation of the HB method, it is difficult to estimate quantitatively. Thus, a correction method for PIA that considers the soil moisture effect was developed and implemented into the DPR standard algorithm. With this correction, the surface precipitation rate estimates increased by approximately 18% for KuPR and 15% for the normal scan of KaPR over land.

A method to extract characteristics of the Gulf Stream (GS) surface flow field using high-frequency radar (HFR)–derived currents is described. Radial velocity measurements, from radar installations near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, serve as input, chosen because of the greater spatial and temporal coverage provided compared to total velocity fields. The landward GS edge, jet axis, orientation, and cyclonic shear zone (CSZ) width are identified along bearings within the radar footprint. The method is applied to observations from two radar installations from November 2014 and provides GS estimates with daily temporal resolution. Results along eight bearings provide a consistent representation of GS variability dominated by the passage of meanders. Average distance to the GS edge along bearings varies from 50 to 100 km; distance estimate quality degrades with range from the radars. Monthly mean GS jet axis locations from satellite sea surface height (SSH) and the algorithm are consistent. Cross correlations between estimates of GS characteristics in the same region vary from 0.37 to 0.73 for the GS edge. Estimates of radar distance to the GS edge are negatively correlated with current velocity measurements nearest the surface from a moored 150-kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler and vary between −0.58 and −0.71. GS CSZ width metrics range from mean values of 29–31 km. Daily GS orientation estimates are affected by the crossing angle of the radial bearing relative to the GS. Lags from the cross correlations of monthly mean properties suggest meander propagation speed estimates increase from 43.2 km day−1 south of the cape, to 136.8 km day−1 just east of it.

The ocean’s inverse cascade of energy from small to large scales has been confirmed from satellite altimetry for scales larger than 100 km. However, measurements of the direct energy cascade to smaller scales have remained difficult to obtain. Here, the possibility of estimating these energy transfers to smaller scales from observations by high-frequency radars is investigated using numerical simulations. Synthetic measurements are first extracted from a quasigeostrophic simulation of freely decaying turbulence for which the reference energy flux is characterized by the transition from positive to negative values. Fluxes obtained from synthetic data are compared to this reference flux in order to assess the robustness to various measurement limitations. The geometry of the observational domain (nonperiodicity, domain size, and aspect ratio) affects mostly large scales, while the spatial resolution of the instruments affects mostly small scales. In contrast, measurement noise and missing data affect both large and small scales. Despite resulting in significant biases in the amplitude of the fluxes, the transition scale between the positive and negative fluxes is relatively robust to measurement limitations. These results are also confirmed using a simulation from a primitive-equations model in a realistic coastal geometry.

Doppler spectra measured by vertically pointing radars are inherently linked to raindrop size distributions (DSDs). But, accurate estimation of DSDs remains challenging because raindrop spectra are broadened by atmospheric turbulence and shifted by vertical air motions. This paper presents a novel method to estimate vertical air motions that there is no need to assume a model for DSD at each range gate. The theory of the new method is that the spectral difference between the adjacent range gates is contributed by vertical air motions and the variability of DSDs. The contribution of the change of DSDs is estimated by looking up the prepared tables (LUTs) of raindrop velocity difference and shape function difference. Then, the vertical air motions can be estimated by minimizing the cost function of the two spectra between the adjacent range gates. The retrieval algorithm is applied to three cases including a stratiform and two convective observed by a C band vertically pointing radar in Longmen, Guangdong province of China in June 2016. Before that, the spectrum broadening effect is removed by the traditional deconvolution method with a wind profiler. The vertical profiles of precipitation parameters are also retrieved to investigate the microphysical process. The precipitation parameters retrieved near the surface are compared with the ground data collected by a two-dimensional video disdrometer(2DVD) and the results show good agreements.

A technique for correcting radar radial velocity Vr in airborne, nadir-pointing radar data using the surface of Earth as a reference is proposed and tested. Operating airborne Doppler radars requires correcting the radial velocity for platform motion. This can be accomplished with accurate beam-pointing and platform motion measurements. However, there are often residual pointing errors due to drift in inertial navigation systems (INS) and/or errors in platform-relative pointing. The technique proposed here takes advantage of the fact that the surface is stationary and the mean of the measured Vr at the surface should be 0 m s−1. Therefore, if a good estimate of the mean is made, it can be subtracted from the measured Vr to correct for errors due to residual pointing errors. The data contain many independent deviations from 0 m s−1 due to various causes, including measurement variance and large deviations due to surface features. These deviations must be filtered out of before the surface reference can be applied to correct the Vr data. A two-step filtering process was developed and tested. The first step removes large deviations in and the second step removes the measurement noise. The technique was examined using data from three field campaigns and was found to improve the quality of Vr in all cases. The Vr bias was removed and the variance was substantially reduced. The approach is generally applicable to nadir-pointing airborne radar data.

The CSU–CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X band with coaxial beams. This radar system offers a unique environment to develop and/or validate algorithms that cut across its wavelengths and polarizations. This paper presents a method to retrieve resonance scattering regions from the difference in intrinsic reflectivities after attenuation correction, which is performed using measured reflectivity fields only. The algorithm to retrieve these regions dominated by non-Rayleigh scattering is applied to different storm events, and the obtained data field capturing the difference in S- and X-band reflectivities due to resonance effects (which we will call Mie signal for convenience) is compared to the collocated dual-polarization fields. The obtained Mie signal is also compared to hail reports. In both cases, the retrieved Mie signal is found to be consistent with the rest of the dual-polarization data fields, and in some situations, it is shown to bring information not directly discernible from the usual dual-polarization radar variables.

Interpolation of ground-based radar measurements is required when mapping data from their native spherical coordinates to a Cartesian grid. For reflectivity the question arises as to whether this processing should be performed in units ofZ(mm6m−3) or dBZ. This study addresses this question using one year of data from three radars, operating in diverse climates across Australia. For each radar, a subset of 800 volume scans is processed to identify “triads”—groups of three consecutive gates with valid data—in each of the three coordinate directions: range, azimuth, and elevation. For every triad, the reflectivity at the central gate is estimated by linearly interpolating between the outer two gates in bothZand dBZ. The resulting values are then compared with the true reflectivity at the central gate to quantify the interpolation errors. For all three sites and in all three coordinate directions, we find that interpolation inZis more accurate on average, especially in regions of high reflectivity and strong reflectivity gradient (i.e., convective cores). However, interpolation in dBZis better in regions of low and monotonically increasing/decreasing reflectivity. It is therefore recommended that reflectivities be converted from dBZtoZprior to interpolation except when identifying echo-top height or other low-reflectivity boundaries.

A VHF pulsed radar system was set up on the Taoyuan County seashore (24°57′58″N, 121°00′30″E; Taiwan) to observe the sea surface in the northern Taiwan Strait for the first time. The radar used a four-element, vertically polarized Yagi antenna to transmit the 52-MHz radar wave. The receiving linear array consists of four vertical dipole antennas that were located 3 m apart and attached with four independent and identical receivers. With the multichannel echoes, the direction of arrival (DOA) of the radar echoes were determined by using an optimization beamforming approach—the Capon method. Echo intensity was observed to vary principally in semidiurnal oscillation, which matched well the time series of tide gauge measurements and sea level simulations. In addition, the oscillatory characteristics of Doppler/radial velocity of the VHF radar were generally consistent with that of the HF coastal ocean dynamics applications radar (CODAR) nearby. Nevertheless, the contributions of various tidal modes to the parameters of DOA, echo intensity, radial velocity, and spectral width, varied with the range and time period (e.g., neap or spring tides). For example, the semidiurnal tides governed the variation in the echo center only in the range interval between ~15 and ~25 km from the seashore but dominated other parameters throughout the detectable range. Correlations and phase relationships between these parameters were diverse; they varied with time and had dramatic changes at around the distances of 3 and 10 km. Possible causes of these features were discussed, including sea surface wind, nearshore current, sea level height, and bathymetric effect.

Instantaneous liquid-equivalent snowfall rates S retrieved from CloudSat W-band cloud radar reflectivity Ze measurements are compared to estimates of S from operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) systems when the CloudSat satellite overflew the ground-based radar sites during spatially extensive nimbostratus snowfall events. For these comparisons, the ground-based radar measurements are interpolated to closely match in space and time spaceborne radar resolution volumes above ground clutter, thus avoiding uncertainties in deriving near-surface snowfall rates from measurements aloft by both radar types. Although typical uncertainties of both ground-based and spaceborne snowfall-rate retrieval approaches are quite high, the results from the standard optimal estimation CloudSat 2C-SNOW-PROFILE algorithm are on average in good agreement with the WSR-88D default snowfall algorithm results with correlation coefficients being around 0.8–0.85. The CloudSat standard optimal estimation snowfall-rate products are also shown to be in satisfactory agreement with retrievals from several simple W-band Ze–S relations suggested earlier. The snowfall rate and snow/ice water content (IWC) parameters from the CloudSat 2C-SNOW-PROFILE algorithm are highly interdependent. A tight relation between S and IWC is apparently introduced through the ice particle fall velocity assumption that is made in the reflectivity-based snowfall retrieval algorithm. This suggests that ice sedimentation rate estimates can also be deduced from applications of numerous empirical IWC–reflectivity relations derived previously for different cloud conditions when appropriate assumptions about fall velocities are made. Intercomparisons between different CloudSat snow/ice water content products indicated significant discrepancies in IWC values from different standard CloudSat retrieval algorithms.

In this work, we present a new Quantitative-Precipitation-Estimation (QPE) quality-control (QC) algorithm for the UK weather radar network. The real-time adaptive algorithm uses a neural network (NN) to select data from the lowest useable elevation scan to optimize the combined performance of two other radar data correction algorithms: ground clutter mitigation (using CLEAN-AP) and vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction. The NN is trained using 3D tiles of observed uncontaminated weather signals that are systematically combined with ground-clutter signals collected under dry weather conditions. This approach provides a way to simulate radar signals with a wide range of clutter contamination conditions and with realistic spatial structures while providing the uncontaminated “truth” with respect to which the performance of the QC algorithm can be measured. An evaluation of QPE products obtained with the proposed QC algorithm demonstrates superior performance as compared to those obtained with the QC algorithm currently used in operations. Similar improvements are also illustrated using radar observations from two periods of prolonged precipitation, showing a better balance between overestimation errors from using clutter-contaminated low-elevation radar data and VPR-induced errors from using high-elevation radar data.

This study cross validates the radar reflectivity Z; the rainfall drop size distribution parameter (median volume diameter Do); and the rainfall rate R estimated from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite Precipitation Radar (PR), a combined PR and TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) algorithm (COM), and a C-band dual-polarized ground radar (GR) for TRMM overpasses during the passage of tropical cyclone (TC) and non-TC events over Darwin, Australia. Two overpass events during the passage of TC Carlos and 11 non-TC overpass events are used in this study, and the GR is taken as the reference. It is shown that the correspondence is dependent on the precipitation type whereby events with more (less) stratiform rainfall usually have a positive (negative) bias in the reflectivity and the rainfall rate, whereas in the Do the bias is generally positive but small (large). The COM reflectivity estimates are similar to the PR, but it has a smaller bias in the Do for most of the greater stratiform events. This suggests that combining the TMI with the PR adjusts the Do toward the “correct” direction if the GR is taken as the reference. Moreover, the association between the TRMM estimates and the GR for the two TC events, which are highly stratiform in nature, is similar to that observed for the highly stratiform non-TC events (there is no significant difference), but it differs considerably from that observed for the majority of the highly convective non-TC events.

The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) made one of the first radar observations of a rare tornadic storm that occurred on 10 June 2014 in the Seoul metropolitan region, South Korea, using X-band dual-polarization radar. The tornado lasted for about 18 min, during which it destroyed about 20 greenhouses and injured several people. This tornado was rated at F0 on the Fujita scale. The KICT X-band dual-polarization radar was installed in the area northwest of Seoul to monitor storm development, measure rainfall, improve hazard mitigation, and disaster management. This paper presents the high-resolution (both spatial and temporal) polarimetric radar observations of the tornado, along with the radar parameters of reflectivity, differential reflectivity, Doppler velocity, and copolar correlation coefficient. The characteristic signatures of polarimetric variables, including the descending reflectivity core, weak echo hole, Doppler velocity couplet, and hook echo, are used to describe the tornado vortex and its development. In addition, the close range (about 5-km distance) observations of the hook echo show the high-resolution radar signatures of a weak echo region surrounded by high-reflectivity annular rings inside the tornado vortex. From development to dissipation, various finescale features are observed, including lofted tornadic debris and potential hail signatures. The high-resolution (close range) observations were also compared against low-resolution (long range) radar observations. The comparison shows that high-spatiotemporal, low-altitude, and close-range observations can be significantly advantageous for tornado detection and early warning.

Wind profiling radars are usually not calibrated with respect to reflectivity because such calibrations are both unnecessary for good wind measurements and costly. However, reflectivity from calibrated profilers can reveal many atmospheric attributes beyond winds. Establishing ways to calibrate these radars even after they have been taken out of service would expand the utility of archived profiler data. We have calibrated one operating mode of a 915-MHz profiler deployed at Manus, Papua New Guinea (1992–2001), using two methods. The first method adjusts a radar parameter until the profiler’s estimate of rainfall during stratiform events closely matches surface observations. The second adjusts the parameter so that mean brightband heights observed by the profiler (July 1992–August 1994) match the mean brightband reflectivities over the profiler as observed by the TRMM Precipitation Radar (January 1998–July 2001). The results differ by about 5% and yield very similar precipitation errors during tested stratiform events. One or both of these methods could be used on many other wind profilers, whether they have been decommissioned or are currently operational. Data from such calibrated profilers will enable research employing the equivalent reflectivity factor observed by profilers to be compared with that from other radars, and will also enable turbulent studies with C n2.

A method named BTREC, which is in fact an extension of tracking a radar echo by cross-correlation (TREC) method, is proposed based on the Barnes filter in this paper. BTREC is an efficient objective analysis method for smoothing the motion vectors of radar echo patterns. A comparative analysis of the BTREC vectors and the COTREC (another extension of TREC, which is restricted by the 2D continuity equation) vectors is conducted. The results show that the BTREC method corrects the noise and inconsistencies in TREC vectors (often induced by shielding, ground clutter, and rapid morphological changes of the radar patterns) more thoroughly than COTREC. Then the BTREC, COTREC, and TREC methods are applied to extrapolate the real radar echo pattern over Jiangxi Province in China for two cases (1900–2100 UTC 4 June and 0900–1100 UTC 30 June 2018). Results show that the BTREC method performs the best out of the three methods to forecast the radar echo patterns in the following 1 and 2 h, and has the least distortion. To further confirm that, 892 radar composite reflectivity mosaic images with precipitation in summer (June–August) over Jiangxi are collected to test the three methods. The results show that in the 1- and 2-h extrapolations, the mean differences of the threat score (TS), correlation (CORR), and probability of detection (POD) between BTREC and TREC are obviously more than 0, while that of the false alarm ratio (FAR) is remarkably less than 0 (the threshold to identify whether a grid is correctly predicted is set to 10 dB Z). Although the mean difference of TS, CORR, POD, and FAR between COTREC and TREC have similar variation, their magnitudes are obviously decreased (especially for the 2-h extrapolation). This further indicates that the BTREC method obviously improves the forecast of the radar echo pattern within the next 2 h compared to the COTREC and TREC methods.

A novel 3D discriminant function is introduced as part of a ground clutter detection algorithm for improving weather radar observations. The 3D discriminant function utilizes the phase fluctuations of the received signals for horizontal and vertical polarizations and the dual-scan cross-correlation coefficient. An optimal decision based on the 3D discriminant function is made using a simple Bayesian classifier to distinguish clutter from weather signals. For convenience of use, a multivariate Gaussian mixture model is used to represent the probability density functions of discriminant functions. The model parameters are estimated based on the maximum likelihood using the expectation–maximization (ML-EM) method. The performance improvements are demonstrated by applying the proposed detection algorithm to radar data collected by the polarimetric Norman, Oklahoma (KOUN), weather radar. This algorithm is compared to other clutter detection algorithms and the results indicate that, using the proposed detection algorithm, a better probability of detection can be achieved.

The characteristics of microphysical processes of a severe winter storm that occurred on the Korean Peninsula on 12 December 2013 was studied in this work for the first time via X-band dual-polarization weather radar observations. A new range–height indicator (RHI) scan-based quasi-vertical profile methodology, in which polarimetric radar variables were averaged at each height of the RHI scan, was introduced to investigate the snow microphysics, and the obtained polarimetric radar signatures served as fingerprints of the dendritic growth, aggregation, and riming processes. Enhanced differential reflectivity (Zdr) and specific differential phase shift (Kdp) bands were detected near the −15°C isotherm, which signified the growth of dendrites or platelike crystals. The observed correlation between the increases in the reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization Zh and copolar correlation coefficient ρhv and the decreases in Zdr and Kdp magnitudes at lower heights suggested the occurrence of the aggregation process. The combination of high Zh and low Zdr values with turbulent atmospheric conditions observed at the ground level indicated the occurrence of the riming process. In addition, the negative Kdp and Zdr values combined with high Zh and ρhv magnitudes (observed near the end of the snow event) indicated the formation of graupel particles. The polarimetric radar signatures obtained for the snow growth processes were evident from ground observations and agreed well with the results of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications data. Furthermore, the spatial variability of Zh methodology was implemented to describe both aggregates and rimed ice particles.

Quadratically varying phase codes applied from pulse to pulse can be used to impart a range-dependent frequency shift in the decoded signal of a pulsed radar. Radars employing such codes can operate at extremely high pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs) with overlaid signals from multiple echo trips separated in the spectral domain. When operating at high PRFs, the radar duty cycle can approach 50% in a single-antenna system. High duty cycle operation results in a substantial increase in average transmit power with a proportional increase in signal processing gain as compared to a conventional pulsed radar. The shortest quadratic phase code, or base code, has a length equal to the number of echo trips M that can be unambiguously resolved in the spectral domain. The decoded waveform is essentially free from range sidelobes under ideal conditions. However, amplitude and phase errors associated with nonideal phase coding result in range sidelobes that appear at all echo trips in the decoded signal. These sidelobes can be suppressed by using a composite phase code composed of a periodically repeating base phase code added to a much longer quadratic code with a proportionally slower phase variation. Meteorological data gathered with a Ka-band radar operating at 3.0-MHz PRF at 45% duty cycle are presented. A comparison of these data with data gathered in short-pulse mode at a duty cycle of 0.3% exhibited a 21-dB improvement in the Doppler spectrum signal-to-noise ratio, equal to the ratio of the respective duty cycles.

By using long pulses with extended dwell time, radar sensitivity is enhanced such that more clear-air returns are usable. This enhanced capability can increase clear-air data coverage and provide additional information for radar wind analysis and data assimilation. To explore this potential capability and related benefits, a new scan mode with long pulses and low antenna rotation rate is derived from the existing clear-air scan mode and applied to the named KOUN S-band test bed radar at NSSL. Velocities collected using this newly modified scan mode are significantly enhanced in data coverage compared to those collected with the unmodified scan mode from the nearby test bed radar (named KCRI). However, transmitter duty cycle limits the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) to 455 Hz for the long pulses, which reduces the Nyquist velocity to 12.53 m s−1 for the new scan mode. Such a small Nyquist interval leads to significantly worse problems with aliased velocities. A recently developed dealiasing algorithm is modified by using external reference velocities from KCRI to overcome increased difficulties in dealiasing, making the velocities from KOUN useful over increased range and area. This implies that similar increases in velocity data coverage can be achieved without using external reference velocities if the newly modified scan is paired with an unmodified scan into dual-PRF scans. This dual-PRF approach is proposed for future development.

A hybrid, empirical radar wave inversion technique that treats swell and wind waves separately is presented and evaluated using a single 48-MHz radar unit and in situ wave measurements. This hybrid approach greatly reduces errors in radar wave inversion during swell seas. Our analysis suggests that, prior to the inversion, the second-order spectrum should be normalized using Barrick’s weighting function because this process removes harmonic and corner reflection peaks from the inversion and improves the results. In addition, the resulting calibration constants for the wind wave component are not wave-frequency dependent and are similar in magnitude to those found in previous studies using different operating-frequency radars. This result suggests radar frequency independence, although additional experimental verification is required. The swell component of the model presented here ignores the effect of swell’s propagation direction on the radar signal. Although this approach has several limitations and may only be useful near the coast (where swell propagates close to perpendicular to the coastline), the resulting wave inversion is accurate even when swell is propagating close to perpendicular to the radar beam direction. RMS differences relative to in situ wave height measurements range from 0.16 to 0.25 m as the radar beam angle increases from 22° to 56°.

Nowcasts (short-term forecasts) of heavy rainfall causing flash floods are highly valuable in densely populated urban areas. In the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) project, a high-resolution X-band radar network was deployed in the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex. The Dynamic and Adaptive Radar Tracking of Storms (DARTS) method was developed as a part of the CASA nowcasting system. In this method, the advection field is determined in the spectral domain using the discrete Fourier transform. DARTS was recently extended to include a filtering scheme for suppressing small-scale precipitation features that have low predictability. Building on the earlier work, Stochastic DARTS (S-DARTS), a probabilistic extension of DARTS, is developed and tested using the CASA DFW radar network. In this method, the nowcasts are stochastically perturbed in order to simulate uncertainties. Two novel features are introduced in S-DARTS. First, the scale filtering and perturbation based on an autoregressive model are done in the spectral domain in order to achieve high computational efficiency. Second, this methodology is extended to modeling the temporal evolution of the advection field. The performance and forecast skill of S-DARTS are evaluated with different precipitation intensity thresholds and ensemble sizes. It is shown that S-DARTS can produce reliable probabilistic nowcasts in the CASA DFW domain with 250-m spatial resolution up to 45 min for lower precipitation intensities (below 2 mm h−1). For higher intensities (above 5 mm h−1), adequate skill can be obtained up to 15 min.
