The case finding program of the Cuyahoga County Health Department for tuberculosis control includes the routine tuberculin testing of the children in the first, seventh and tenth grades of the schools under the jurisdiction of the department. The method of testing employed prior to the year 1939 was the Mantoux intradermal test of the first and second strength purified protein derivative. The Mantoux test, while very reliable, proved to have many disadvantages. This year the commissioner of health decided to substitute the tuberculin patch test as devised by Vollmer. We felt that an opportunity was presented to us to make a thorough comparison of the Mantoux and patch tests and to determine the reliability of the latter as compared to the Mantoux.
