Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the benefits and risks associated with the use of corticosteroids as a form of treatment for severe and septic shock among adults. Results indicated that there is no clear indication of benefit in reduction of mortality after use of such medicines, however, of late, low-dosage has been recommended for more beneficial results.

Abstract

Corticosteroids may reduce the risk of death in patients with septic shock who also have adrenal gland insufficiency, according to a study in 299 patients. In the patients with adrenal gland insufficiency, corticosteroids lowered the death rate by about 30%.

Abstract

A short corticotropin stimulation test may indicate a poor prognosis in patients with septic shock. Septic shock occurs when the cardiovascular system and other organs fail following an infection. Researchers gave a corticotropin stimulation test to 189 patients with septic shock. This test measures how quickly blood levels of cortisol increase in response to corticotropin. A short test means cortisol levels increase relatively quickly. Patients whose cortisol levels at baseline were higher than normal and whose cortisol levels increased quickly following the test had the highest mortality rates.
