The Port of Galveston, also known as the "Port of Everything," is investing $50.1 million to expand its West Port Complex and modernize its cargo operations. This expansion will attract new global shippers and vessels, increasing the cargo operating area by one-third. The port is also focusing on onshore alternative energy and project cargo growth, taking advantage of its natural location and railroads. Improvements in highway access and the construction of a fourth cruise terminal are also underway. The port is experiencing an increase in ro/ro cargoes, particularly new cars and large construction and agricultural equipment. Non-automobile cargo exports have also seen a significant increase, while new car imports, primarily BMWs from Germany, have jumped by 71%. The port is planning to export live cattle to the Middle East and has received a grant to develop a shore microgrid for powering cargo ships. Additionally, the port is designated as a Free Trade Zone for importing wind turbine components. [Extracted from the article]
