Electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism were recorded for five cyclophanes with ethano bridges: [2.2]paracyclophane, (1,2,4)[2.2.2]cyclophane, (1,2,4;1,2,5)[2.2.2]cyclophane, (1,2,3,4,5,6)(1,2,3,4,5,6)cyclophane, and trans-[2.2]metacyclophane. Spectral and structural analyses were based on geometry optimization and calculations of transition energies, carried out using density functional theory methods. The assignments have been proposed for several electronic transitions observed in the region below 52 000 cm-1. The observation of transitions which should be forbidden in the high D2h symmetry [2.2]paracyclophane suggests a twisted ground state structure of D2 symmetry, although the former structure with large amplitude vibrations at room temperature cannot be excluded. The PBE0 functional turned out to appropriately reproduce the inter-ring distances and electronic transition energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection limit strongly depends on the molecular structure, which we demonstrate for a family of tert-butyl-substituted porphycenes. Even though the investigated species present very similar photophysical properties, the ratio between the SERS signal and fluorescence background depends on the number of bulky tert-butyl groups. Moreover, the probability of single molecule detection systematically drops with the number of the moieties attached to the pyrrole ring. As steric hindrance is the only significantly changing feature among the studied chromophores, we attribute the observed phenomena to the spatial structure. We also show that the sensitivity of the SERS technique can be improved by lowering the temperature. We managed to observe single-molecule spectra for derivatives for which this was unattainable at room temperature.

Hemiporphycene (HPc), a constitutional isomer of porphyrin, is studied under supersonic expansion conditions by means of laser-induced fluorescence, visible-visible hole-burning experiments, single vibronic level fluorescence techniques, and quantum chemical calculations. Only one trans form of jet-cooled HPc is observed, in contrast to solution studies that evidence a mixture of two trans tautomeric forms separated in energy by ∼1 kcal/mol. Reliable structural assignment is provided by simulating absorption and emission patterns at the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory levels of theory. The vibronic spectra are nicely reproduced for both electronic ground and lowest excited singlet states for the most stable trans form. In contrast to another porphyrin isomer, porphycene (Pc), no tunneling or photo-induced hydrogen transfer is detected. The lower symmetry of HPc compared with Pc and the concomitant non-equivalent positions of the inner-cavity nitrogen atoms result in a non-symmetric double minimum potential for tautomerization, larger energy barrier, and a longer tunneling distance, with the average intramolecular hydrogen bond length larger in HPc than in Pc. HPc readily forms hydrates that show red-shifted absorption relative to the bare molecule.

Tautomerization in single porphycene molecules is investigated on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) surfaces by a combination of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is revealed that the trans configuration is the thermodynamically stable form of porphycene on Cu(111) and Ag(111), whereas the cis configuration occurs as a meta-stable form. The trans → cis or cis → trans conversion on Cu(111) can be induced in an unidirectional fashion by injecting tunneling electrons from the STM tip or heating the surface, respectively. We find that the cis ↔ cis tautomerization on Cu(111) occurs spontaneously via tunneling, verified by the negligible temperature dependence of the tautomerization rate below ∼23 K. Van der Waals corrected DFT calculations are used to characterize the adsorption structures of porphycene and to map the potential energy surface of the tautomerization on Cu(111). The calculated barriers are too high to be thermally overcome at cryogenic temperatures used in the experiment and zero-point energy corrections do not change this picture, leaving tunneling as the most likely mechanism. On Ag(111), the reversible trans ↔ cis conversion occurs spontaneously at 5 K and the cis ↔ cis tautomerization rate is much higher than on Cu(111), indicating a significantly smaller tautomerization barrier on Ag(111) due to the weaker interaction between porphycene and the surface compared to Cu(111). Additionally, the STM experiments and DFT calculations reveal that tautomerization on Cu(111) and Ag(111) occurs with migration of porphycene along the surface; thus, the translational motion couples with the tautomerization coordinate. On the other hand, the trans and cis configurations are not discernible in the STM image and no tautomerization is observed for porphycene on Au(111). The weak interaction of porphycene with Au(111) is closest to the gas-phase limit and therefore the absence of trans and cis configurations in the STM images is explained either by the rapid tautomerization rate or the similar character of the molecular frontier orbitals of the trans and cis configurations.

Supersonic jet-isolated porphycene has been studied using the techniques of laser-induced fluorescence excitation, single vibronic level fluorescence, and spectral hole burning, combined with quantum mechanical calculations of geometry and vibrational structure of the ground and lowest electronically excited singlet states. Porphycene is a model for coherent double hydrogen tunneling in a symmetrical double well potential, as evidenced by tunneling splittings observed in electronic absorption and emission. The results led to reliable assignment of low frequency modes in S0 and S1 electronic states. The values of tunneling splitting were determined for ground state vibrational levels. In the case of tautomerization-promoting 2A(g) mode, tunneling splitting values significantly increase with the vibrational quantum number. Mode coupling was demonstrated by different values of tunneling splitting obtained for coexcitation of two or more vibrations. Finally, alternation of relative intensity patterns for the components of 2A(g) tunneling doublet observed for excitation and emission into different vibrational levels suggests that the energy order of levels corresponding to (+) and (-) combinations of nuclear wave functions is different for even and odd vibrational quantum numbers.

Electronic absorption spectra of 2,7,12,17-tetra-tert-butylporphycene (TTPC) have been recorded in low-temperature argon and xenon matrices for various deposition conditions. In the region of the S(0)-S(1) electronic transition, the spectra of TTPC in argon reveal a rich site structure, characterized by a series of more than 30 absorption peaks. Studies of the temperature dependence of the electronic spectra in solid argon demonstrated remarkable spectral changes, resulting in the broadening of all bands with increasing temperature. These temperature-induced spectral changes are, to a large degree, reversible, so lowering of temperature is accompanied by the recovery of the original fine-line spectrum. The absorption spectra in xenon reveal broad bands, on which a rich pattern of lines becomes superimposed at low temperatures. Trapping site distribution and the structure of the microenvironment around the TTPC chromophore, embedded in argon and xenon hosts, have been analyzed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD results show that the trapping of TTPC in rare-gas solids is influenced by favorable embedding of the bulky tert-butyl groups inside the matrix cage. The crucial role of the tert-butyl groups for the thermodynamics and kinetics of matrix deposition is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained for the parent, unsubstituted porphycene.

Porphycene (1) and porphyrin (2), two constitutional isomers, reveal completely different electronic spectral patterns in argon and xenon matrices. For the former the spectra recorded in the two solidified gases resemble each other, whereas for the latter they are completely different. This difference can be rationalized by molecular-dynamics simulations of the structure of the microenvironment carried out for the two chromophores embedded in argon and xenon hosts. For 1, the structure of the main substitutional site is the same for Ar and Xe and consists of a hexagonal cavity obtained by removing seven host atoms from the [111] crystallographic plane. An analogous structure is obtained for 2 in xenon. However, in argon the porphyrin chromophore environment is shared between several different sites, with the number of replaced host atoms ranging from seven to ten. These results demonstrate that a relatively minor structural alternation may lead to major changes in the spectral pattern of molecules embedded in rare-gas cryogenic matrices.

Molecular dynamics calculations reveal that the main trapping site for porphyrin embedded in a xenon matrix corresponds to a hexagonal cavity formed after removal of seven host atoms. Tautomerization involving two inner hydrogen atoms leads to two trans forms that interact differently with the matrix cage. Therefore, both electronic and infrared spectra are split into doublets. Comparison of the experimentally observed splitting patterns with the results of density functional theory calculations that explicitly include the nearest xenon atoms allows assigning each spectral feature to one of two different configurations of the chromophore inside the xenon cavity.
