The interaction of high-intensity lasers with plasma is predicted to produce extreme quasi-static magnetic fields with magnitudes approaching Megatesla levels. In relativistically transparent plasmas, these fields can enhance direct laser acceleration and allow efficient gamma-ray emission by accelerated electrons. However, due to the so-called magnetic suppression effect, the magnetic field can also affect radiating electron trajectories and, thus, reduce the emission probability of the bremsstrahlung. This is the first study to examine the bremsstrahlung suppression mechanism in the context of high-intensity laser–plasma interactions. Our paper describes a new module that integrates the suppression effect into the standard bremsstrahlung module of the EPOCH particle-in-cell code by considering the impact of magnetic fields and extending the analysis to electric fields. We also investigate this suppressing mechanism's effect on the emitting electron's dynamics. It has been recently shown that over 109 electron–positron pairs can be produced from light alone at an experimentally accessible laser intensity of 5 × 10 22 W / cm 2 by irradiating a target with a pre-formed channel by two counter-propagating laser pulses. Although targets of variable length and channel density have been successfully fabricated and used in recent experiments involving high-intensity lasers, the impact of these parameters on the pair yield by different pair creation processes is yet to be understood. In this paper, we explore, using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the impact of the channel density and length on pair production by the linear Breit–Wheeler process, nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process, and Bethe–Heitler process at fixed laser intensity. We find that these parameters can be successfully used to increase the linear Breit–Wheeler pair yield. More importantly, the relative contribution of each process can be adjusted by varying the same parameters. We show that this approach allows us to completely eliminate the yield from the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process while maintaining a significant yield from the linear Breit–Wheeler process. The Bethe–Heitler process plays a secondary role in the considered system, so the majority of the positrons inside the channel are produced from light alone. Our results indicate that a structured target irradiated by two laser beams has the potential to be a versatile platform for future experimental studies of the Breit–Wheeler pair production processes, with the target parameters serving as control knobs. We report on progress in the understanding of the effects of kilotesla-level applied magnetic fields on relativistic laser–plasma interactions. Ongoing advances in magnetic-field–generation techniques enable new and highly desirable phenomena, including magnetic-field–amplification platforms with reversible sign, focusing ion acceleration, and bulk-relativistic plasma heating. Building on recent advancements in laser–plasma interactions with applied magnetic fields, we introduce simple models for evaluating the effects of applied magnetic fields in magnetic-field amplification, sheath-based ion acceleration, and direct laser acceleration. These models indicate the feasibility of observing beneficial magnetic-field effects under experimentally relevant conditions and offer a starting point for future experimental design. We investigate the dynamics of hot refluxing electrons in the interaction of an ultra-short relativistic laser pulse with a thin foil target via particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, which is governed by the multidimensional spatiotemporal evolution of a self-generated sheath field. The comparison of time-integrated energy spectra of refluxing and escaping electrons indicates the refluxing efficiency is higher than 95% in average for each bounce. The characteristics of wide transverse spatial distribution and energy-resolved angular distribution caused by the refluxing electrons show a direct correlation with the angular-dependent photon yield of bremsstrahlung emission, as verified by the hybrid simulations of coupling the PIC results with Monte Carlo particle transport code. We further clarify the energy dissipation mechanisms of refluxing electrons through the recirculation in the thin target under the electron-refluxing dominated regime and conclude that the self-generated sheath field plays a dominant role over the competing processes, such as the radiation loss, collisional stopping, and anomalous inhibition via the resistive field. The lifetime of recirculation is calculated to be a few hundred femtoseconds, that is, one order of magnitude shorter than the timescale of collisional dissipation, while it is one order of magnitude longer than the laser pulse duration. The results could provide useful insights to understand the hot electron transport and stopping, secondary radiation generation, and ion acceleration in the high energy density plasmas. One of the paradigm-shifting phenomena triggered in laser–plasma interactions at relativistic intensities is the so-called relativistic transparency. As the electrons become heated by the laser to relativistic energies, the plasma becomes transparent to the laser light even though the plasma density is sufficiently high to reflect the laser pulse in the non-relativistic case. This paper highlights the impact that relativistic transparency can have on laser-matter interactions by focusing on a collective phenomenon that is associated with the onset of relativistic transparency: plasma birefringence in thermally anisotropic relativistic plasmas. The optical properties of such a system become dependent on the polarization of light, and this can serve as the basis for plasma-based optical devices or novel diagnostic capabilities. A high-repetition rate laser-driven proton source from a continuously operating cryogenic hydrogen cluster target is presented. We demonstrate a debris-free, Coulomb-explosion based acceleration in the 10s of kilo-electron-volt range with a stability of about 10% in a 5 Hz operation. This acceleration mechanism, delivering short pulse proton bursts, represents an ideal acceleration scheme for various applications, for example, in materials science or as an injector source in conventional accelerators. Furthermore, the proton energy can be tuned by varying the laser and/or cluster parameters. 3D numerical particle-in-cell simulations and an analytical model support the experimental results and reveal great potential for further studies, scaling up the proton energies, which can be realized with a simple modification of the target. A solid density target irradiated by a high-intensity laser pulse can become relativistically transparent, which then allows it to sustain an extremely strong laser-driven longitudinal electron current. The current generates a filament with a slowly varying MT-level azimuthal magnetic field that has been shown to prompt efficient emission of multi-MeV photons in the form of a collimated beam required for multiple applications. This work examines the feasibility of using an x-ray beam from the European x-ray free electron laser for the detection of the magnetic field via the Faraday rotation. Post-processed three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that, even though the relativistic transparency dramatically reduces the rotation in a uniform target, the detrimental effect can be successfully reversed by employing a structured target containing a channel to achieve a rotation angle of 10−4 rad. The channel must be relativistically transparent with an electron density that is lower than the near-solid density in the bulk. The detection setup has been optimized by varying the channel radius and focusing the laser pulse driving the magnetic field. We predict that the Faraday rotation can produce 103 photons with polarization orthogonal to the polarization of the incoming 100 fs long probe beam with 5 × 1012 x-ray photons. Based on the calculated rotation angle, the polarization purity must be much better than 10−8 in order to detect the signal above the noise level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations of energy transfer of high intensity (I = 5 × 1019 W/cm2), ultrashort (<30 fs) Ti:Sa laser pulses to solid targets with a randomly rough surface have been performed. We investigated the influence of the target surface morphology on the efficiency of energy transfer of p- polarized laser pulses characterized by a very high contrast. Targets with a roughness σ larger than ∼20% of the laser wavelength proved to absorb a remarkably large fraction of energy reaching up to 70%, almost independent of the incidence angle. Numerical simulations of various interaction conditions are in agreement with the experimental data and confirm the effect of the target morphology and its surface parameters on the enhanced energy absorbed fraction. We present a detailed study of the use of a non-parallel, inhomogeneous magnetic field spectrometer for the investigation of laser-accelerated ion beams. Employing a wedged yoke design, we demonstrate the feasibility of an in-situ self-calibration technique of the non-uniform magnetic field and show that high-precision measurements of ion energies are possible in a wide-angle configuration. We also discuss the implications of a stacked detector system for unambiguous identification of different ion species present in the ion beam and explore the feasibility of detection of high energy particles beyond 100 MeV/amu in radiation harsh environments. The proton acceleration from a thin foil irradiated by a laser pulse at relativistic intensities is a process highly dependent on the electron dynamic at the rear side of the foil. By reducing the lateral size of the laser irradiated foil the hot electrons are confined in a small volume leading to an enhancement of both the maximum proton energy and the conversion efficiency in the target normal sheath acceleration regime. In this paper we demonstrate that an optimal lateral size of the target can be found. While a smaller target surface leads to a better hot electron confinement and enhances the Debye sheath accelerating the protons, it also leads to an increase of preplasma formation due to limited laser contrast available experimentally and hence to a decrease of the proton acceleration. The experimentally found optimum is in good agreement with analytic theory and 2D particle in cell simulations. The experimental arrangement for the investigation of high-field laser-induced processes using a broadband proton probe beam has been modified to enable the detection of the ultrafast motion of field fronts. It is typical in such experiments for the target to be oriented perpendicularly with respect to the principal axis of the probe beam. It is demonstrated here, however, that the temporal imaging properties of the diagnostic arrangement are altered drastically by placing the axis (or plane) of the target at an oblique angle to the transverse plane of the probe beam. A regime of laser acceleration of protons, which relies on the interaction of ultrahigh contrast laser pulses with ultrathin targets, has been validated using experiments and simulations. Proton beams were accelerated to a maximum energy of ∼7.3 MeV from targets as thin as 30 nm irradiated at 1018 W cm-2 μm2 (1 J, 320 fs) with an estimated peak laser pulse to pedestal intensity contrast ratio of 1011. This represents nearly a tenfold increase in proton energy compared to the highest energies obtainable using non contrast enhanced pulses and thicker targets (>5 μm) at the same intensity. To obtain similar proton energy with thicker targets and the same laser pulse duration, a much higher laser intensity (i.e., above 1019 W cm-2 μm2) is required. The simulations are in close agreement with the experimental results, showing efficient electron heating compared to the case of thicker targets. Rapid target expansion, allowing laser absorption in density gradients, is key to enhanced electron heating and ion acceleration in ultrathin targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser driven proton beams have been used to diagnose transient fields and density perturbations in laser produced plasmas. Grid deflectometry techniques have been applied to proton radiography to obtain precise measurements of proton beam angles caused by electromagnetic fields in laser produced plasmas. Application of proton radiography to laser driven implosions has demonstrated that density conditions in compressed media can be diagnosed with million electron volt protons. This data has shown that proton radiography can provide unique insight into transient electromagnetic fields in super critical density plasmas and provide a density perturbation diagnostics in compressed matter. A novel proton imaging technique was applied which allows a continuous temporal record of electric fields within a time window of several nanoseconds. This “proton streak deflectometry” was used to investigate transient electric fields of intense (∼1017 W/cm2) laser irradiated foils. We found out that these fields with an absolute peak of up to 108 V/m extend over millimeter lateral extension and decay at nanosecond duration.
